Abstract:Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is successfully applied to the manufacturing of Cu-8Al-2Ni-2Fe-2Mn nickel aluminum bronze alloy. The effects of deposited height on microstructure, tensile properties and microhardness are investigated. Results show that the differences in mechanical properties are related to microstructure anisotropy. The microstructure of the as-deposited condition mainly consists of dendrite, cellular grains, columnar dendrites and equiaxed dendrites. With the increase in height of the deposited wall, the width of the primary dendrite arm spacing successively increases. The microhardness and tensile testing results are differently influenced by the microstructure with the change in positions. The tensile properties, including the ultimate tensile strength and elongation, exhibit anisotropy in the horizontal and vertical directions. The results are explained in detail through temperature field measurement and digital image correlation system. The findings indicate that WAAM is a feasible method to obtain nickel aluminum bronze alloys despite of that fact of anisotropic mechanical characteristics.

Experimental investigation on wear resistance and corrosion behavior of nickel-aluminum bronze alloy fabricated by wire-arc additive manufacturing

Abstract:This paper discusses the differences in the microstructure, mechanical properties, wear resistance, and corrosion behavior of nickel-aluminum bronze (NAB) alloys fabricated via wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) versus casting. The grain size of the WAAM-NAB alloy is smaller than that of the as-cast NAB alloys; furthermore, the precipitation of the large size κ I phase is completely suppressed while the remaining precipitated κ phases are limited and reduced in size. Compared with the cast alloy, the WAAM-NAB alloy indicates a higher bending and tensile strength by 46% and 18%, respectively. The coefficient of friction of WAAM-NAB alloy is 56% lower than cast alloys. Additionally, the WAAM-NAB alloy shows greater corrosion resistance against seawater, in that it only exhibited residual β phase corrosion, whereas the cast alloy sustained severe selective-phase corrosion.

Down‐regulation of Bcl‐2 and Bcl‐xL expression with bispecific antisense treatment in glioblastoma cell lines induce cell death

Abstract:The functions of the antiapoptotic proteins Bcl‐2 and Bcl‐xL were examined in glioblastoma cells. Expression of both Bcl‐2 and Bcl‐xL were found to be elevated in protein lysates from seven early passage cell lines derived from human glioblastoma tumors compared with non‐neoplastic glial cells. Down‐regulation of both bcl‐2 and bcl‐xL expression in glioblastoma cell lines U87 and NS008 with bcl‐2/bcl‐xL bispecific antisense oligonucleotide resulted in spontaneous cell death. The mechanism of cell death was partially caspase‐dependent. Executioner caspase 6 and caspase 7, but not caspase 3, were involved in apoptosis induced by bcl‐2/bcl‐xL antisense treatment. Interestingly, western blots failed to demonstrate expression of caspase 3 in two of the seven glioblastoma cell lines examined. The data support the hypothesis that Bcl‐2 and Bcl‐xL are important in preventing cell death in glioblastoma cells. It also suggests that there are functional pathways capable of successful completion of caspase‐dependent cell death in gliomas. These findings support a potential role of bcl‐2/bcl‐xL bispecifc antisense oligonucleotide therapy as a treatment strategy to enhance caspase‐dependent cell death in patients with glioblastoma.
Characterisation of a High-Performance Al–Zn–Mg–Cu Alloy Designed for Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing

Abstract:Ever-increasing demands of industrial manufacturing regarding mechanical properties require the development of novel alloys designed towards the respective manufacturing process. Here, we consider wire arc additive manufacturing. To this end, Al alloys with additions of Zn, Mg and Cu have been designed considering the requirements of good mechanical properties and limited hot cracking susceptibility. The samples were produced using the cold metal transfer pulse advanced (CMT-PADV) technique, known for its ability to produce lower porosity parts with smaller grain size. After material simulations to determine the optimal heat treatment, the samples were solution heat treated, quenched and aged to enhance their mechanical performance. Chemical analysis, mechanical properties and microstructure evolution were evaluated using optical light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence analysis and X-ray radiography, as well as tensile, fatigue and hardness tests. The objective of this research was to evaluate in detail the mechanical properties and microstructure of the newly designed high-performance Al–Zn-based alloy before and after ageing heat treatment. The only defects found in the parts built under optimised conditions were small dispersed porosities, without any visible cracks or lack of fusion. Furthermore, the mechanical properties are superior to those of commercial 7xxx alloys and remarkably independent of the testing direction (parallel or perpendicular to the deposit beads). The presented analyses are very promising regarding additive manufacturing of high-strength aluminium alloys.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques allow for greater design freedom than is possible with conventional manufacturing processes. Components fabricated via AM can be compact and more potent for electrical applications. This study used cold metal transfer (CMT) based wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) to build the WAAM 2319 wall. The microstructure is mainly composed of equiaxed and columnar dendrites along with a small fraction of pores. Precipitated θ phases formed due to complex thermal cycles during WAAM. The hardness of the WAAM 2319 alloy ranged between 68 HV 0.2 to 86 HV 0.2 . The electrical resistivity of WAAM 2319 was 6.72±0.23 μΩ-cm resulting in the reduced conductivity of 25.66±1.10%IACS compared to the wrought AA2219 alloy having 30%IACS. The decrease in conductivity is attributed to the presence of coarse precipitates along with dendritic microstructure and copper solute concentration. Thus, WAAM-processed Al-Cu alloys can be used for future electrical applications.

Abstract:Cold metal transfer (CMT) technology is considered in an application for wire arc additive manufacturing WAAM of refractory high corrosion resistant Inconel 625 alloy. Based on the fabricated wall it has been shown the suitability of CMT WAAM for the sound formation of weld and homogenous distribution of mechanical properties has been shown. Microscopy analysis has revealed that the microstructure of the deposited alloy along the height of the wall element is relatively uniform. The minor differences in the microstructure are observed in the bottom part, caused by welding specifically. It should be noted that there is a slight decrease in strength indicators from the bottom to the top of the welded product, but they do not exceed 5%, which is considered entirely satisfactory. This phenomenon is caused by structural transformations that take place in slightly different cooling conditions, namely in the lower layers, the substrate on which the surfacing was carried out plays a more significant role in heat flow. This leads to more intensive cooling of the lower layers and as a result slightly higher values of strength.

Abstract:The high-performance additive manufacturing of relatively small aluminum alloy components has been widely proven successful. However, wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) has always been challenging in achieving uniform microstructure and high mechanical properties when manufacturing large-sized parts. Therefore, this study used cold metal transition wire arc additive manufacturing (CMT-WAAM) to prepare Al-5.49Cu-0.4Mn-0.29Cd (ACMC) alloy to obtain a uniform microstructure and improve its mechanical properties. The results show that the as-deposited (AD) samples have an obvious layered deposited structure. The grains in the microstructure are all equiaxed crystals and a large amount of copper-rich eutectic phase precipitates at the grain boundaries. After heat treatment, the vast majority of the eutectic phase dissolves, and θ'phase, with a size of 100–200 nm, uniformly precipitates in the α-Al matrix. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) of the heat-treated (HT) specimen can reach 483.7 MPa and 412.3 MPa, respectively. There is no significant difference in the mechanical properties between the transverse and longitudinal directions of thin-walled samples. Based on experimental results and theoretical analysis, the strengthening mechanism and fracture mechanism of CMT-WAAM aluminum alloy were revealed. This work provides a theoretical basis for the microstructure optimization and mechanical performance improvement of ACMC alloy, which is of great significance for the high-performance preparation of large-sized components in the aerospace field.

Abstract:This paper discussed the differences in corrosion resistance and antimicrobial properties between nickel-aluminum bronze (NAB) fabricated by WAAM and cast. Compared with castings, the grain size of WAAM-NAB was smaller, and the precipitation of the κ phase was limited. The corrosion of WAAM-NAB occurred in the residual β phase with a suppression of selective phase corrosion, so its corrosion resistance was improved. The Cu ions of the WAAM-NAB were released more rapidly to achieve a more effective sterilization. The microbial corrosion resistance of WAAM-NAB was better than that of cast alloys.

Abstract:In this work, Cu-6.5% Al alloy was deposited by wire arc additive manufacturing based on cold metal transfer (CMT) welding process, through separate feeding of pure Cu and Al wires into a molten pool, onto a 3-mm pure copper plate. The deposited alloy was homogenized by heat treatment at 800 °C (2 h) and evaluated for their microstructure using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, and mechanical properties. The paper discusses the structure-mechanical property correlation under both as-fabricated and heat-treated condition. Results reveal that (1) the CMT welding process is efficient in making Cu-Al alloy with target chemical composition, (2) heat treatment improved solid solution strengthening effect, which improved the hardness, and (3) heat treatment improved tensile strength properties and ductility of the alloy.

Abstract:A Ni3Al-based alloy was prepared for the first time using a twin wire and arc additive manufacturing (T-WAAM) by adjusting the relative feeding speed of the Ni and Al wires, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited alloy were investigated. The results showed that the deposited Ni3Al-based alloy consisted of a dendritic γ + γ' dual-phase structure and an interdendritic γ' block. The interdendritic γ' block was partially transformed into a γ + γ' dual-phase structure owing to multiple thermal cycles during the deposition process. Thus, the proportion of the γ + γ' dual-phase structure gradually decreased with increasing building height. Meanwhile, the tensile strength and elongation of the deposited alloy exhibited a similar decline in the height direction. Fracture analysis revealed that the interdendritic γ' block hindered dislocation slip in the γ + γ' dual-phase structure, which caused dislocation stacking and stress concentration at the dendrite/interdendritic phase interface. The increase in the interdendritic γ' block was responsible for the decline in the tensile strength and elongation of the deposited alloy along the height direction. With the lowest proportion of interdendritic γ' block, the bottom deposited alloy had an optimal combination with a tensile strength of 817.3 MPa and elongation of 20.9%. Evaluation of the mechanical properties showed that the tensile strength and elongation of the T-WAAMed Ni3Al-based alloy were equivalent to those of commercial cast IC218 and IC221M Ni3Al-based alloys.

Abstract:Heterogeneous microstructure designs have attracted a great deal of attention, not only because they have the potential to achieve an ideal combination of two conflicting properties, but also because the processes involved in their fabrication are cost-effective and can be scaled up for industrial production. The process parameters in the preparation process have an important effect on the microstructure and properties of alloy members prepared by wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology. It was expected that the spatial heterogeneous microstructure with large microstructural heterogeneities in metals can be formed through changing the process parameters. In this work, homogeneous NiTi thin-walled component and heterogeneous NiTi thin-walled component were fabricated using WAAM technology by adjusting the heat input. The effects of deposition height and heat input on the microstructure, mechanical properties and wear properties of WAAM NiTi alloys were investigated. The results show that grains were gradually refined with the increase of deposition height in the homogeneous WAAM NiTi component. The ultimate tensile strength of homogeneous WAAM NiTi component increased from 606.87 MPa to 654.45 MPa and the elongation increased from 12.72% to 15.38%, as the increase of deposition height. Moreover, the homogeneous WAAM NiTi component exhibited excellent wear resistance, the coefficient of friction decreased from 0.760 to 0.715 with the increase of deposition height. Meanwhile, the grains in the heterogeneous WAAM NiTi component shows the finest grains in the central region. The ultimate tensile strength of the lower region, middle region and upper region of heterogeneous WAAM NiTi components were 556.12MPa, 599.53MPa and 739.79MPa, and the elongations were 12.98%, 16.69%, 21.74%, respectively. The coefficient of friction for the lower region, middle region and upper region of heterogeneous WAAM NiTi components were 0.713, 0.720 and 0.715, respectively. The microhardness and cyclic compression properties of the homogeneous components with higher heat input were better than those of the heterogeneous components for the same deposition height. The tensile yield strength, elongation and wear resistance of the heterogeneous components were superior compared to the homogeneous components. These results can be used to optimize the WAAM process parameters to prepare NiTi components with excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a promising approach to producing large-scale metal structures. The investigation on the WAAM of aluminum alloys has lasted for over 17 years and covered multiple alloy systems. However, fundamental research on the WAAM of quaternary Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys is still lacking. This study focuses on understanding the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of an ultra-high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy fabricated by WAAM. A single-pass multilayer component is successfully fabricated. Results indicate that a single deposition layer consists of two types of columnar grains with different textures and origins. Nanoscale second phases are observed to precipitate during the manufacturing process with location-dependent sizes and volume fractions due to different thermal histories. The microhardness of the cross-section exhibits a special un-uniform distribution between 75–164 HV0.2 from the substrate to the top of the component. The WAAM deposited component shows higher overall tensile properties than the as-fabricated spray formed counterpart. The average yield strength and ultimate strength are higher in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction, while the difference in elongation is small.

Abstract:In pursuit of enhanced microstructural and mechanical properties, follow-weld forced cooling wire arc additive manufacturing (CWAAM) was employed for the fabrication of nickel aluminium bronze (NAB) components. The application of compressed gas metal arc welding (GMAW) system was implemented to mitigate the interference of cooling gas with the arc. A comprehensive examination of the microstructural and mechanical was conducted with and without the cooling source. Compared to WAAM sample, the grains size in CWAAM decreased by more than two times, attributed to higher melt pool subcooling. The 〈100〉 texture in CWAAM specimens showed a decrease due to the emergence of equiaxed grains and grain refinement, reducing the anisotropy of materials. Moreover, the dislocation density in CWAAM samples increased by 62.7%, owing to forced cooling that generated additional dislocations and suppressed recrystallization. Consequently, the average 0.2% yield strength (338.7 MPa) and ultimate tensile strength (687.3 MPa) of CWAAM specimens exhibited an approximate increase of 20% and 8.6%, respectively, in comparison to WAAM samples. This enhancement in yield strength is primarily ascribed to grain boundary strengthening and dislocation strengthening, instead of solid solution strengthening or precipitation strengthening.

Abstract:Wire + arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) was used to manufacture the 18Ni 300 maraging steel component. The microstructure, tensile properties, fracture toughness, and fatigue crack growth resistance of the WAAM-ed 18Ni 300 maraging steel were investigated. The bottom regions showed unique microstructure: martensite, tempered martensite, ferrite, granular perlite, and carbide. The formation of tempered martensite in remelting regions would contribute to the following reasons: the cooling impact of the substrate; the partial remelting and long low tempering time. For the non-remelting regions, much ferrite would contribute to the organic mixture of ferrite and (granular) carbides, providing the environment of forming perlite. Meanwhile, numerous Ni3Mo and Ni3Ti IMCs were observed in the martensite matrix. The tensile properties of different regions and directions were different. The fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth resistance of horizontal sample was greater than the vertical sample due to the unique microstructures in the bottom region and weak interlayer combination. The WAAM-ed 18Ni 300 component had a great matching between fracture toughness and yield strength, which is similar to the SLM-ed 18Ni 300, illustrating the WAAM-ed 18Ni 300 components might have a better application potential in the aerospace equipment field.

Abstract:Purpose Additive manufacturing (AM) can achieve significant weight savings with only minor compromises in strength if high-performance wrought aluminum alloys are used as feedstock. Despite the advantages in strength that aluminum alloys (AA) 6061 offer, they cannot be manufactured via printing because of hot cracking and other solidification problems. The purpose of this study is to achieve high-quality printing of AA6061 with nanotreated wires. Design/methodology/approach Nanotreating was used to modify the AA6061 alloy composition by adding a small fraction of nanoparticles to enhance the alloy's manufacturability and resultant properties. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) was used to print the nanotreated AA6061 wire feedstock. The microstructure of the printed AA6061 was characterized by X-ray crystallography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping. The microhardness profile, tensile behavior and fracture surface were analyzed. Findings This work successfully used WAAM to print nanotreated AA 6061 components. The resulting AA6061 parts were crack-free, with exceptional grain morphology and superior mechanical properties. Owing to the excellent size control capabilities of nanoparticles, a homogeneous distribution of small grains was maintained in all deposited layers, even during repeated thermal cycles. Originality/value Previous studies have not successfully printed AA6061 using WAAM. Conventional WAAM products exhibit anisotropic mechanical properties. The nanotreated AA6061 was successfully printed to achieve homogeneous microhardness and isotropic tensile properties. The promising results of this study reflect the great potential of nanotech metallurgy as applied to the WAAM process.

Abstract:Current global 3D metal printing research is focused on powder bed fusion and direct energy deposition. Several materials are presently under research to assess their post-additive manufacturing properties, and to process them in industries using advanced manufacturing techniques. This study investigates the electrochemical, mechanical, and metallurgical properties of wire arc additively manufactured (WAAM) ER70S-6 alloy walls on AISI S235 plates, emphasizing ship component fabrication. The corrosion resistance of both materials is assessed through Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Potentiodynamic Polarization testing in a 3.5% NaCl solution. Surface and cross-sectional morphologies are analyzed using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, while energy dispersive spectroscopy is employed to study the chemical composition of the corrosion products. Moreover, the hardness of the WAAM-deposited ER70S6 wall is found to be highest in the uppermost layers of deposition due to the presence of acicular ferrite and ferritic-bainite microstructure. Tensile and Charpy impact strength for AISI S235 and WAAM-deposited ER70S-6 exhibit similar performance at room and low temperatures. Interestingly, the WAAM sample demonstrates a 60% higher elongation than the AISI S235 sample. Hence, the findings from this experimental work suggest that WAAM-deposited carbon steel exhibits favourable corrosion resistance and comparable mechanical properties to AISI S235. Consequently, WAAM is emerging as a promising alternative to conventional manufacturing techniques for fabricating ship components, repairing and modifying hull structures, manufacturing nozzles, propeller blades, fin-like structures, structural components, and more.

Abstract:This study investigates the metallurgical and mechanical properties of a nickel-based superalloy produced through wire + arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). It is a novel and fast fabrication technique based on layer-by-layer construction for rapid product development. A thin-wall component of Inconel 625 was successfully manufactured using a cold metal transfer (CMT)-based WAAM technique with an ErNiCrMo-3 wire after identifying suitable process parameters based on trial runs. The microstructure varies based on the travel and build directions, resulting in columnar, cellular, and equiaxed dendrites found in bottom, middle, and top regions. These dendritic structures evolve throughout the deposition process, predominantly influenced by temperature circumstances. The results of SEM/EDS analysis indicated that Nb and Mo segregation was lower in the interdendritic areas compared to the dendritic core areas of the thin-wall part. The XRD results discovered that the main crystal structure found in the WAAMed samples was a γ-FCC (face-centered cubic). Additionally, through EBSD analysis, the average grain size was identified as 86.45 μm in the travel direction and 89.15 μm in the build direction. The grain properties of the material were influenced by the reheating phenomenon and the circumstances of solidification that occurred throughout the layer-by-layer additive manufacturing process. The larger proportion of higher angle grain boundaries improves the mechanical properties. The average hardness in the travel direction was higher in the top (312 HV), middle (297 HV), and bottom (303 HV) sections than in the build direction (305 HV), (290 HV) and (294 HV), respectively. The mechanical properties, specifically tensile strength, exhibit anisotropy that varies depending on the direction of travel and build. The residual stress analysis shows that the as-built specimen is mainly affected by tensile stress in the travel and build directions.

Abstract:Al-Cu alloy has broad application prospects in the field of aerospace due to its excellent performance. In this paper, deposits with different Cu contents were prepared by the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process, and the effects of Cu content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The microstructure of Al-Cu alloy was investigated by metallography, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that both the number and size of the precipitated θ phases (Al2Cu) in the as-deposited material increase with the increase of Cu content. After the T4 treatment, the solid solution amount of Cu in the matrix showed a trend of first increasing and then remaining stable. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, as the Cu content increased, the number and size of the remaining θ phases both increased. In the peak ageing state, the amount of precipitated θ’ phase showed a trend of increasing and then remaining stable. After the T6 treatment, the mechanical properties showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of the content of Cu. When the Cu content was 5.65%, the deposit achieved the best mechanical properties, and the anisotropy of the mechanical properties disappeared. The tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation reached 538 MPa, 478 MPa, and 10.5%, respectively. When the content of Cu was greater than 5.65%, the anisotropy of mechanical properties was obvious, and the fracture mode of the vertical specimen changed from ductile fracture to brittle fracture.

Abstract:The application of additive manufacturing (AM) is gradually extending to different industrial sectors. Most additively manufactured metallic components typically exhibit an inherent columnar grain structure, the control of which has been a challenging issue. In this study, the microstructures of the characteristic zones (heat-affected zone and transition zone) were controlled by adjusting the deposition strategy and arc mode during wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) of NiTi alloy. Compared to the sample fabricated by cold metal transfer (CMT) mode, the oscillating (O) sample shows a higher tensile strength of 793.6 MPa, while the pulsed (P) sample shows a better elongation of 5.8%. The high strength of the O samples is mainly due to the significantly lower aspect ratio of its columnar grains, while fine equiaxed grain structure in the transition zone of the P samples is responsible for the better plasticity. Different microstructures in the characteristic zones can be tailored by combining the forced melt flow, pulse frequency and undercooling, which provides vast freedom for the associated mechanical properties control. Our work provides a new strategy to regulate the microstructure and thus mechanical properties of additively manufactured NiTi alloys.

Abstract:Al-Ni-Cu alloys are used in energy, automotive, and aerospace industries because of their excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature stability. In this study, Al-Ni-Cu alloy powder was subjected to selective laser melting (SLM). The SLM Al-Ni-Cu alloy was manufactured using appropriate printing parameters, and its properties were investigated. The results revealed that the As-printed material exhibited a typical melting pool stack structure, with an ultimate tensile strength of 725 MPa but a high brittleness effect (low ductility). After traditional heat treatment, the melting pool structure did not completely disappear. The strengthening phase Al7Cu23Ni precipitated from the boundary of the melting pools; thus, the Al-Ni-Cu alloy maintained high strength (>500 MPa) and considerably increased ductility (>10%). The SLM Al-Ni-Cu alloy has considerable industrial application potential; therefore, increasing the heat treatment temperature or extending the heat treatment time in the future works can promote the decomposition of the melting pool boundary and solve the problem related to the aggregation behavior of the precipitation phase, thereby improving the fatigue life of the alloy.
