Abstract:A method was developed for the trace and ultra-trace determination of germanium by flow injection (FI) hydride generation with subsequent trapping and electrothermal atomization in a graphite furnace pre-coated with palladium. The samples were propelled into the FI system to be merged on-line with a tetrahydroborate reductant. The hydride and hydrogen gases evolved were separated from the liquid phase in a gas-liquid separator and transferred to a palladium-coated graphite furnace pre-heated to 400-degrees-C to collect the analyte, which was then atomized at 2500-degrees-C. The sensitivities and interference effects using different concentrations of hydrochloric acid were compared. The tolerance to interferences was improved at high acidities of 3 mol l-1 HCl and also in the FI system when compared with a batch in situ collection system. With the reported system germanium was determined at a sampling frequency of 18 h-1 with a detection limit (3sigma) of 0.004 mug l-1 in 0.15 mol l-1 HCl medium and 0.03 mug l-1 in 3 mol l-1 HCI medium using a 4.5 ml sample. The precision (relative standard deviation) was 2.0% at the 0.3 mug l-1 level in 0.15 mol 1-1 HCl medium and 2.5% at the 1.5 mug l-1 level in 3 mol l-1 HCl medium. The proposed method was applied to the determination of germanium in garlic, tap water, ginseng and geological reference samples.

Abstract:A continuous flow hydride generation laser-induced fluorescence (HG-LIF) spectrometry technique has been investigated for performing trace determination of germanium (Ge). Hydride generation of Ge is performed using reagent concentrations of 2 M H3PO4 and 0.5% NaBH4 and fluorescence detection is performed using tunable dye laser radiation at 253.323 nm for Ge excitation with fluorescence measured at 303.907 nm. The HG-LIF approach provides a linear response for Ge in the concentration range from 1.0 to 50 ng mL−1 and a limit of detection of 0.1 ng mL−1. Replicate measurements at 10 ng mL−1 have a relative standard deviation of 0.1% (n = 8). Measurements of Ge in different sample matrices have demonstrated the effectiveness of thiourea and ascorbic acid as masking agents that compensate for samples containing interfering ions. The determinations of the Ge content in reference water samples, fly ash samples, and supplement capsules demonstrate that the HG-LIF approach has feasibility for measuring Ge in different sample matrices at environmentally relevant concentrations.

Abstract:L‐cysteine enhanced the analytical signal in the hydride generation‐atomic fluorescence spectrometric determination of germanium. In addition, it reduced or eliminated interferences from coexistent ions such as Cr (VI), Se4 +, Te4 +, Pb2 +, Cu2 +, and Ni+ 2 in aqueous analyte solutions. With L‐cysteine, the tolerable limits for interferent ions were determined for Cr (VI), Se4 +, Te4 +, Pb2 +, Cu2 +, Ni+ 2, Co2 +, Zn2 +, Fe3 +, As3 +, Sb3 +,Pd2 +, Au3 +, Bi3 +, and Pt2 +. The proposed method was used for the determination of germanium in seven geological references samples, with analytical results in good agreement with the certified values. The limit of detection of the method was 0.38 µg/L (equivalent to 0.01µg/g in solid samples, assuming a sample weight of 0.5 g), and the relative standard deviation for the sample analysis ranged from 1.4% to 7.3%. The method can be used for the analysis of geological samples for germanium with concentrations ranging from 0.01µg/g to 100 µg/g.

Abstract:A method for the determination of trace amounts of germanium by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS) associated on-line with flow injection (FI) coprecipitation preconcentration was described. The samples, each spiked with Ni(2+) (500 mugml(-1)), were introduced into the FI system using time-based injection, and mixed with a NaOH solution (50 gl(-1)). Germanium was preconcentrated by coprecipitation with the generated nickel hydroxide precipitate. The precipitate is subsequently eluted with 20% (v/v) phosphate acid solution and directed into the HG-AFS system. This method is simple and rapid. The detection limit (3sigma) was 0.11 mugl(-1) and the relative standard deviation was 5.6% (n=11) at the 10 mugl(-1) level.

Abstract:A convenient and rapid method for the determination of trace amounts of germanium has been developed. This method has the advantage that it is less sensitive to instrumental parameters than previously described methods. Interferences from transition elements are reduced and interferences from other hydride-forming elements are negligible. The detection limit for the determination of germanium is 20 pg ml–1(3σ). Germanium concentrations in metallurgical samples are easily determined and this method has been applied to the determination of germanium in copper and iron.

Abstract:Germanium has been determined by reduction with sodium tetrahydroborate(III). The detection limit for the method using a d.c. plasma is 1 ng for a 10-ml sample. The presence of ammonium peroxodisulphate results in the enhanced recovery of germanium and complete suppression of interferences from 1000 p.p.m. of Al, As, Cu, Hg, Pb and Sn. Severe interferences from 1000 p.p.m. of Cd, Co, Ni and Zn were only partly overcome using a combination of thiourea and ammonium peroxodisulphate or by using mercury(II). Interferences may be suppressed because the peroxodisulphate maintains these elements in higher oxidation states. Application of the method to ferrous dusts is described.

Abstract:An efficient procedure that may be used to determine germanium traces and combines the advantages of catalytic adsorptive stripping voltammetry (CAdSV) with the convenience of screen-printed electrodes was developed. To induce the CAdSV response of the germanium(IV)-catechol complex, the vanadium(IV)-HEDTA compound was employed in combination with various bismuth-modified homogeneous (glassy carbon, gold coated with a bismuth layer via physical vapor deposition) and heterogeneous (screen-printed carbon, mesoporous carbon, graphene and reduced graphene oxide, polymer-encapsuled carbon fiber) electrodes. This solution had never before been implemented for this purpose. To achieve the most favorable performance of the working electrode, the parameters of bismuth deposition were optimized using a central composite design methodology. SEM imaging and contact angle measurements confirmed the long-term stability and high chemical resistance of the electrodes against the oxidizing action of V(IV)-HEDTA. Under optimized conditions, the method made it possible to detect nanomolar concentrations of germanium with favorable detection limits, high sensitivity, and a wide linear range of 5–90 nM of Ge(IV).

Abstract:Hydride generation inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry combined with flow injection using a membrane gas-liquid separation technique, was applied to the determination of trace levels of Ge. Sodium tetrahydroborate(III) and phosphate buffer (pH 6.5) solutions were used as reductants. When 1 cm3 of sample was used, Ge could be determined with a detection limit (SNR = 3) of 0.4 ng and a relative standard deviation of 3–4%. Approximately 150 samples could be analysed in 1 h. Interferences from the transition metal ions could be reduced with EDTA and those from the hydride forming elements were found to be insignificant. The proposed method was applied to the determination of Ge in GaAs semiconductor materials and to acid extracts of a polyethylene terephthalate.

Abstract:Trace amounts of germanium can be determined by atomic spectrometry by utilizing the vaporization of germanium tetrachloride at ambient temperature. Using an intermittent or continuous flow reactor, the sample solution was mixed with concentrated hydrochloric acid to form volatile germanium tetrachloride which can subsequently be determined by atomic spectrometry. The conditions for the volatilization of germanium chloride were investigated in detail and rapid method for the determination of trace amounts of germanium in real samples was proposed. A detection limit of 0.5 ng ml−1 (3σn−1) was obtained by using atomic fluorescence spectrometric detection and the precision found was 0.8% for a germanium concentration of l00 ng ml−1. Atomic emission and absorption spectrometric methods were also tested. Owing to the high selectivity of the reaction, no interference was found in the determination. The method was applied to the determination of germanium in several standard and certified reference materials; the results obtained were in good agreement with the certified values.

Abstract:This article is devoted to a review of studies on the determination of trace elements in germanium and germanium dioxide. For this purpose, methods both with and without preliminary matrix separation procedure have been developed and applied. The advantage of methods without a matrix separation procedure is simple and fast sample preparation, since it does not require specific devices or installations. On the other hand, the limits of detection (LODs) of trace elements remain relatively high, and the germanium matrix effect occurs when attempts are made to lower them. Since germanium and germanium dioxide are currently among the purest substances, the purest germanium containing trace elements at the level of pg g-1 are used for producing nuclear radiation detectors. Therefore, to achieve low LODs for trace elements, a matrix separation procedure is conducted. Another positive point is that preliminary germanium separation leads to a decrease in the matrix effect. In the article the matrix separation procedure performed by various methods is considered. These procedures can be classified into open, closed or flow kinds, depending on the type of installation. Germanium is usually separated in the form of tetrahalide, most commonly, tetrachloride. For the determination of trace elements in germanium and germanium dioxide, single element methods (atomic absorption spectrometry) and multielement methods (atomic emission spectrometry, mass-spectrometry, neutron activation analysis) are used. In this article, these methods are compared in terms of the number of elements determined and the LODs.

Abstract:The paper presents a combined technique of germanium dioxide analysis by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) with preconcentration of trace elements by distilling off matrix and electrothermal (ETV) introduction of the trace elements concentrate into the ICP. Evaluation of metrological characteristics of the developed technique of high-purity germanium dioxide analysis was performed. The limits of detection (LODs) for 25 trace elements ranged from 0.05 to 20ng/g. The accuracy of proposed technique is confirmed by "added-found" («or spiking») experiment and comparing the results of ETV-ICP-AES and ICP-AES analysis of high purity germanium dioxide samples.

Abstract:Germanium plays an irreplaceable role in the field of modern high-tech materials and is an important strategic metal resource. N235 extraction resin was used to selectively extract [Ge(C 4 O 6 H 4 ) 3 ] 2- . Under the condition of ultrasonic power at 120 W in a water bath, the extraction rate of germanium was 97.32%. The extraction rate of zinc was 2.37% under the conditions of a three-stage solid phase extraction column in series (single-stage filling N235 extraction resin 0.8 g), reaction temperature 25 °C, tartaric acid concentration of 2.0 g/L, and the dwell time is 4.1min. The saturated adsorption capacity of the resin is 51.90 mg/g. The extraction rate of germanium increased by 14.4% under ultrasonic-assisted strengthening conditions. The [Ge(C 4 O 6 H 4 ) 3 ] 2- can be separated from the resin by NaOH solution. The desorption rate of germanium was 94.12% under the condition of water bath ultrasonic power of 120W, 30 ml concentration of 3.5 mol/L NaOH solution, and the dwell time is 5.2min. Under the optimum conditions, the extraction rate of N235 extraction resin was 85.23% after repeated regeneration five times. The results demonstrate that the extraction resin exhibits high selectivity and reproducibility in complex systems, presenting a new method for extracting germanium under complex conditions.

Abstract:We have proposed a combination of techniques for quantitative chemical analysis of high-purity germanium and germanium oxide by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The techniques are intended for determination of the rare-earth (RE) elements (except Pm), platinum group metals (PGMs) (except Os), I, S, Th, Tl, and U after acid dissolution of a sample (instrumental technique) and after separation of the matrix in the form of a highly volatile compound (combined technique). The instrumental technique allows all of the above elements to be determined. To take into account the effect of germanium on analytical signals of analytes, use is made of Be, Dy, or Gd internal standards. The best results in spike experiments have been obtained for the RE elements, PGMs, and I with the Be 234.861 nm; for Th, Tl, and U with the Dy 353.170 nm; and for S with no internal standards. The analyte detection limits (DLs) lie in the range n × 10 –6 to n × 10 –5 wt %. The combined technique is intended for lowering the DLs for Ir, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, S, Th, Tl, and U. Germanium was removed from weighed samples of germanium metal and germanium dioxide in the form of GeCl 4 to above 99.99%. The analyte DLs were then from n × 10 –7 to n × 10 –6 wt %.
Determination of Germanium and Tin and Inorganic Tin Species by Hydride Generation in Situ Trapping Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

Abstract:The analytical performances of a coupled hydride generation, integrated atom trap (HG-IAT) atomizer flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) system were evaluated for determination of Ge and Sn and inorganic tin species in environmental samples. Germanium and tin hydrides were atomized in air-acetylene flame-heated IAT. A new design of HG-IAT-FAAS hyphenated technique that would exceed the operational capabilities of existing arrangements (a water-cooled single silica tube, double-slotted quartz tube) permitting construction of an “integrated trap” was investigated. For the estimation of Sn(II) and Sn(IV) concentrations in samples, the difference between the analytical sensitivities of the absorbance singnals obtained for tin hydride without and with previous treatment of samples with L-cysteine could be used. The concentration of Sn(IV) was calculated by the difference between total Sn(tot) and Sn(II). An improvement in limit of detection was achieved compared with that obtained using any of the aforementioned atom trapping techniques separately. The concentration limits of detection were 25 and 8 ng mL−1 for Ge and Sn, respectively. For a 2 min in situ preconcentration time, sensitivity enhancement, compared to FAAS, were 10 and 14 folds for Ge and Sn, respectively, using hydride generation atom trapping technique. The sensitivity can be further improved by increasing the collection time. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) are of the order of 5–10% for this hyphenated technique. The designs studied include slotted tube, single silica tube, and integrated atom trap water-cooled atom traps. The accuracy of this method was tested by analyses of BCS-CRM No.346 (Alloy), GBW 07302 (Stream Sediment), PACS-1 (Marine Sediment), NBS SRM 1633a (Coal Fly Ash), and NIST SRM 1643e (Trace Element in Water) certified reference materials. Agreement between analytical results and certified values for the test elements Ge and Sn (in the range of 1.7–91.0 µg g−1) were in agreement with recommended values. The measured Ge and Sn contents in five referenced materials were in satisfactory agreement with the certified values. The hyphenated technique was applied for germanium and tin determination in coal fly ash, soil, sediment, garlic, sewage, and river water.

Abstract:For the first time a nickel foam electrode (NFE) is applied in the field of electrochemical vapor generation (EVG) to carry out the electrochemical vapor phase conversion of mercury. Systematical electrochemical and morphological research has demonstrated that the specific surface area of the NFE was several times larger than that of the metal/non-metal electrode with the same geometric size. At the same time, the 3D porous channel composed of multi-layer nickel wire ensures the full contact between reactant and interface. The evident enhancement of spectral signals on a Ni electrode (283%), compared with Pt (27%) and graphite (109%), confirmed that the NFE effectively enhances the yield of mercury reduction. The NFE exhibits low limit of detection (0.017 μg L−1) and a wide linear range (0.2–20 μg L−1) with recoveries of actual samples in the range 87.8–117% towards Hg2+. Although the NFE has no advantage in electronic transmission and catalytic performance, its excellent stability, especially anti-interference and other characteristics, is sufficient for the analysis of hazardous mercury in complex matrix including certified reference materials and real samples.

Abstract:A catalytic adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetric method on an improved bismuth film electrode (BiFE) for the determination of trace germanium in the presence of pyrogallol has been investigated. A well-defined and sensitive stripping peak of Ge(IV)-pyrogallol complex was observed at −0.79 V (versus SCE) in a 0.1 M acetate buffer solution (pH 4.8) at a deposition potential of −0.34 V. The reduction current is catalytically enhanced by adding KBrO3. The experimental variables and potential interference were studied. Compared with the BiFE plated in the solution prepared based on HAc-NaAc without trisodium citrate, the improved BiFE electrodeposited in the solution of HAc-NaAc containing trisodium citrate displayed a better electroanalytical performance for the determination of germanium(IV). Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit of Ge(IV) was 60 ng L−1, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 3.73% at 5 μg L−1level (n=9). This method was successfully applied to determine the total germanium in several Chinese herbal remedies.

Abstract:A combined method of analysis of high-purity germanium dioxide by atomic emission spectrometry with matrix preseparation and trace element preconcentration was developed. The matrix was separated in an autoclave of a MARS 5 microwave system without the contact of samples with an acid solution. Abstract:Germanium (Ge) is a dispersed metal and it is mainly recovered from secondary resources. In order to improve the purification efficiency of Ge-containing materials, a new method for purification of Ge-containing materials by ammonium was proposed. The results showed that the zinc (Zn) components in raw materials were complex, including water-soluble Zn and water-insoluble Zn, which should to be removed by the two-stage purification of primary water purification (PWP) and secondary ammonium purification (SAP). The results of single factor experiment on the process of SAP showed that under the optimal purification conditions of total ammonium concentration of 0.69 mol/L, pH of 2.5∼, liquid-solid ratio of 3:1 mL/g, reaction time of 10 min and reaction temperature of 20 °C, 95.68% Zn could be removed from raw materials. The purification mechanism indicated that the water-soluble Zn in the form of physical adsorption and water-insoluble Zn in the form of chemical adsorption can be removed in PWP stage and SAP stage, respectively. After the two-stage purification, the Zn component that was difficult to be removed by burning was greatly reduced, which provided favorable conditions for improving the quality of Ge concentrate.
