Abstract:The entire Himalayan arc is predicted to produce a series of significant earthquakes and the subsequent great earthquakes of magnitude 8.0 and higher. A substantial amount of rock tunneling is being carried out in the Himalayan region to meet the growing demand for transportation, power, and other infrastructure projects. Earthquake forces influence the final design of the tunnel, which requires further strengthening of the concrete lining and improvement in tunnel support. Because of increasing importance, it is essential to combine the dynamic forces and displacements produced by seismic ground movements into the design stage for tunnels. In this paper, a numerical analysis has been carried out to assess the seismic performance of a proposed hydropower tunnel of 8.8m diameter (horseshoe-shape) in Uttarakhand, India. The impact of earthquakes on underground structures such as tunnels is often considered to be insignificant. However, the results of this study show how that stress from seismic loads can be damaging to the stability of the tunnel. In this study, a pseudo-static approach was adopted to assess the impact of the earthquake on the tunnel lining for the sections located in different rocks namely slate (Q=3.4), quartzite (Q=6), and dolomitic limestone (Q=5.2), respectively. Pseudo-static analysis findings suggest there is a 35% increase in the lining forces for an impact of earthquake for the tunnel section situated in Slate. Furthermore, displacements and damage-prone areas are determined to assess the damage to the tunnel, which could be helpful for rapid evaluations of potential future damage.

Abstract:Along with the need for western economic development, the number of long tunnel projects which go through mountains is constantly on the rise. In the process of construction, various disaster-causing structures are frequently exposed, which leads to many geological disasters. The traditional idea is that the reverse fault is not easily developed for an underground river, which means that the tunnel elevation design is not considered adequately. When some tunnels cross the bottom of the river, the fractures near the fault between the underground river and the excavation space may be activated and then evolve into channels, causing serious water inrush accidents during construction and operation processes. Taking the Qiyueshan Tunnel site as an example, on the premise of the anatomy of the control mechanism of the reverse fault on the development of the underground river, based on the multiperiod typical structural traces of the tunnel and surface outcrop, it was found that stratifications, dip joints, transverse joints, and tension joints of good aperture grade are important control factors. The cut block easily loses its stability and provides space for karst development, while intermittent uplifting of regional structures provides hydrodynamic conditions for the development of the underground river, causing the hydraulic gradient to be inconsistent in the overall underground river. Finally, the rainwater dynamic monitoring and tracer connectivity are data that can be fully utilized to demonstrate that a reverse fracture can control the development of the underground river. The authors further considered the effect of the vertical zoning of the fault structure and the excavation disturbance, and, drawing on the experience of the relative location of the same site in the same field, put forward the suggestion that the construction of the follow-up tunnel in the study area should be slightly higher than the elevation of the underground river. The research results can provide useful reference for similar engineering problems in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Tunnelling through faulted rock mass is associated with long lasting displacements, stability problems, overburden squeezing, high deformations and dynamic stress conditions. With the dominance of faults in the Nepal Himalaya, determination of behaviour of the rock mass around tunnels and physical parameters for tunnel support is very challenging and demanding. Tunnel support and rock mass stability in tunnel are always dominated by fault. In this paper a hydropower tunnel in the vicinity of a fault has been used as a case study for the design and application of tunnel support. Rock mass is characterized, behaviour of the unsupported rock mass is evaluated, and support is designed. Geological Strength Index (GSI) is used to characterize the rock mass and a methodology has been used to design the support using numerical analysis The system behaviour of the rock mass and the tunnel support are analysed for the various combinations of geomechanical ground conditions. The displacement, stress, yielded elements and plastic region are studied for the influence of the fault and its stress conditions of the designed tunnel supports.

Abstract:This study is on the support design of a tunnel for a hydropower project in District Kalam on the Ushu River, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The study has significant implications for the design of tunnels in similar geological settings, providing insights into potential challenges that may arise during excavation and offering strategies for mitigating risks. The methodology involved geological mapping, rock sampling, discontinuity surveys, and laboratory testing for empirical analysis of tunnel parameters at the Weir House, Powerhouse, and tunnel alignment locations. Empirical analysis of tunnel parameters using three rock classification systems, rock mass rating (RMR), rock quality tunneling index, and rock mass index (RMi). Based on the classification, the rock quality was found to be fair, indicating favorable rock properties. The Q-system rated the rock as poor to fair, suggesting low discontinuity intensity, medium rock strength, or medium deformation modulus. According to the RMi system, rock was rated as medium to strong, indicating low discontinuity intensity, high rock strength, or low deformability. The support design for the tunnel is based on empirical analysis, it recommends support design for the tunnel reinforcement elements such as rock bolts, wire mesh, and shotcrete lining. Overall, the tunnel is stable and does not have complex structure and weak zones.

Abstract:A deadly cascade A catastrophic landslide in Uttarakhand state in India on February 2021 damaged two hydropower plants, and more than 200 people were killed or are missing. Shugar et al. describe the cascade of events that led to this disaster. A massive rock and ice avalanche roared down a Himalayan valley, turning into a deadly debris flow upstream from the first of the two hydropower plants. Abstract:The amount of underground engineering increases steadily in large and medium-sized cities as unban construction develops rapidly. Then surrounding effect caused by tunneling is of great concern, especially the effect to important building and vibration-sensitive buildings. For tunneling engineering construction effect of Hangzhou Zijiang road to Hangzhou white pagoda, comprehensive numerical simulated analyses were conducted. Three dimensional Foundation-tunnel-pagoda FEM model has established. Effect caused by tunneling engineering construction to Hangzhou white pagoda was calculated with ABAQUS software. The simulation results showed that the calculated vibration value has gone beyond the limitation of standard regulation value without protective measures. It does not satisfy isolative vibration requirement under isolation trench of superficial layer (8.2 m). And it can satisfy the requirement under isolation trench of medium layer (17.45 m) and better satisfies the requirement under isolation trench of deep layer (32.7 m).

Abstract:Double- line parallel shield tunnels mostly pass through on structures in the practical engineering. It will disturb the stratum and do harm to adjacent buildings. Considering the interaction of building-soil-tunnel, the short-pile frame building which side-crossed by double-line parallel shield tunneling is simulated by 3D MIDAS/GTS software. The results show that the shield tunnel near by the building passed later will do more impact on it. With the excavation of the tunnel through the building, the transverse settlement of the building increased and the longitudinal uneven settlement increases first and then decreases gradually. Therefore, the building tended towards to tunnel side. The maximum first principal stress P1 also increased first but it decreased gradually and approached to their initial value after totally tunneled.

Abstract:Aimed at addressing tunnel collapse frequently occurring during rescue following disaster in coal mine,this paper,building on idea of the safe,rapid and efficient rescue,introduces its influence on rescue and highlights the formation of rescue passageways depending on tunnels available.The paper is the first to define the research content focused on science and engineering problems related to tunnel collapse,including four aspects such as the evaluation of tunnel steady-state before disaster,grade classification of collapse tunnel,structure research of collapse tunnel and massive accumulation body,rapid formation technology of passageway relay in collapse tunnel.These research contents and consequent studies are of significance to promoting scientific development of coal mine rescue work in our country and improving rescue efficiency after disaster.

Abstract:Research provides one of the alternate solutions to traffic management system by providing a subsurface infrastructure (cut and cover) rectangular underground tunnel. The increasing number of private cars, public transportation vehicles, and pedestrians, as well as the absence of adequate space for these ground amenities, are one of the primary causes of traffic congestion and accidents in the Kathmandu Valley. Investigations have indicated that the Kathmandu Valley has the greatest traffic accidents despite the heavy presence of the government and its agencies there. Most teens and young adults suffer injuries while using motor vehicles. The study's primary objective is to foresee and prevent such complications by planning for sufficient subsurface infrastructure (a cut‐and‐cover rectangular tunnel) for the Kathmandu Valley's transportation network. The overlying pressure, lateral earth pressure, live load, uplift pressure, and live surcharge are some of the forces acting on the tunnel, creating unique stress and moment zones. The tunnel meets the following geometric requirements: (a) Each of the tunnel's two cells has a clear span of 10 m and a clear height of 5.5 m. The side walls, inner walls, top slab, and bottom slab are all 700 mm thick. Soil has built up to a height of 4 m over the tunnel's roof. The analytical method is used in the tunnel segment's analysis. Furthermore, the designed tunnel has been evaluated for stability, considering the deflection and shear resistance. The analysis indicates that the tunnel meets the stability requirements. This implies that the structure is capable of withstanding the applied forces without excessive deflection. Non‐linear dynamic time history analyses of the El Centro earthquake and the Gorkha earthquake were computed. From the El Centro earthquake, the maximum displacement was 23.63 mm at 10.59 s, and from the Gorkha earthquake, the maximum displacement was 16 mm at 0.19 s for the modeled structures.

Abstract:A tunnel provides reliable, low-maintenance, and all-weather connectivity in hilly terrains. Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Broad Gauge project is a 125 km long rail link, that includes 35 bridges and 17 tunnels, to connect the tough route of Uttarakhand Chardham sites. This tunnel route passes through the Lower Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India. The present research emphasizes the structural discontinuities' influence on tunnel stability at different chainages (18570 to 32000) with a 13.4 km long span, having variable overburden and rock mass conditions. The factor of safety is determined using kinematic analysis and numerical simulation based on the boundary element method. The boundary element method examines the excavation problems and captures the interaction of the tunnel structure and surrounding rock mass. Different rock mass classification schemes are also utilized to evaluate the rock mass conditions. Schemes mainly include rock mass rating (RMR), Q-system and Ö-NORM B2203 (NATM class), suggesting that the rock mass quality ranges from poor to fair. The factor of safety for critically unstable wedges without support varies between 0.49 and 0.98, and after applying shotcrete and rock bolting, FOS varies between 0.63 and 3.23. In the present study, the overburden varies between 33 and 590 m. The influence of applied computational support (shotcrete and rock bolting) has been studied with an average value of factor of safety at each 100 m interval. The study outcomes may be significant in supporting estimation during similar rock mass conditions.

Abstract:There are multiple hazard inducers brought about by geological conditions and man-made conditions during the construction of soft rock tunnels in difficult and dangerous mountainous areas, all of which have result in various challenges for the builders. Based on the Jiuzhaigou-Mianyang Expressway (JME), located on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the northwestern edge of the Sichuan Basin, many on-site investigations and monitorings of surrounding rock pressure and structural mechanical behavior have been conducted on the soft rock tunnels with different hazard inducers, including layered rock tunnels, tunnels strongly affected by underground water and rainwater, tunnels that cross fault fracture zones, and twin tunnels with small clear distance. The results show that the failure characteristics and mechanical behavior of structures are different for different disaster inducers. Layered rock mass leads to asymmetry of structural failure and mechanical behavior; abundant groundwater and a complete rainfall runoff system reduce the self-bearing capacity of surrounding rock; tunnel failure and structural stress through fault zones are generally concentrated at the vault and spandrels with poor stability; the approaching excavation with small clear distance will cause secondary disturbance to the middle rock column, resulting in a prominent decrease in the structural stability of the middle rock column, which may seriously lead to collapse. In addition, the secondary lining of these tunnels gradually becomes the main load-bearing structure during the pressure release of the surrounding rock.

Time and space prediction of collapse of loose wall rock at tunnel exit

Abstract:Collapse is one of engineering geological hazard that often occurs at mountain tunnel exit. The prediction of spatial position and occurrence time of the collapse is one of technical problems of the tunneling engineering. The instability criterion and critical distance in loose wall rock at tunnel exit when the collapse occurs are deduced based on the stress-transferring theory. These formulas can be used to forecast the possibility and spatial position of the collapse. At the same time, based on the measured data of vault crown settlement, a grey-synergetic prediction model is established by use of the grey theory and the synergetic theory. Then the instability criterion and the grey-synergetic prediction model are verified by the collapse which occurs in Maanshan tunnel of Zhuji-Yongjia highway. The results show that the spatial position and the occurrence time of the collapse predicted are consistent with the practical situations. It is feasible to use the deduced instability criterion and grey-synergetic theory to predict the spatial position and occurrence time of tunnel collapse. This prediction method has high accuracy and reliability, and it can provide references for the prediction of other collapses at tunnel exit.

Abstract:This study aimed to perform a comprehensive Deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment (DSHA) to quantify the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) values for the Lowari Tunnel region. Twelve thrust faults in the vicinity of the tunnel were evaluated using an updated earthquake catalog from 25AD to 2022. The PGA values were calculated for each thrust fault and compared with the designed value of 0.5 g from the feasibility stage of the tunnel. The study demonstrated that all twelve thrust faults exhibited PGA values below 0.5 g, indicating a low-to-moderate seismic hazard in the region. The maximum PGA value obtained in this study was 0.4 g, which is well below the maximum designed value, indicating that the tunnel is expected to withstand the ground motion values projected to result from high-magnitude earthquakes in the region. These findings hold significant importance as they provide crucial insights into assessing the long-term sustainability of the Lowari Tunnel, situated in one of the world's most seismically active zones.

Abstract:Side-crossing residential buildings in tunnel construction may lead to building subsidence, structural damage by tension and affect the use of buildings. Aiming at the structural damage caused by the side-crossing structure of Re Shuitang Tunnel NO.1, by simulating the influence of tunnel construction on the building, it is concluded that the surrounding rock above the tunnel will be deformed when the tunnel crosses the building. The maximum horizontal displacement is 0.64 mm and the maximum vertical displacement is 4.43 mm. According to the analysis results, the surrounding rock above the tunnel should be strengthened in time, and attention should be paid to the impact of blasting on residential buildings, so as to ensure the safety of buildings and provide reference for future construction.

Abstract:Two successive disastrous earthquakes occurred on February 6, 2023 in the province of Kahramanmaraş of Türkiye. These earthquakes resulted in loss of more than 50.000 lives and several cases of serious damage to various engineering structures. Some roadways and railway and underpass tunnels were also damaged by the earthquakes as a result of heavy shaking as well as faulting. In addition, many rockfalls occurred at the portals of railway and roadway tunnels. The faulting caused quite severe damage at the railway tunnel near Ozan village. The concrete lining of the new Erkenek tunnels ruptured at several places. The damage in the new Erkenek twin tunnels may be related to mass movements caused by heavy ground shaking as well as an inclined geological structure together with low overburden next to a valley. Sinkholes of man-made and natural cavities occurred in several locations including urbanized areas. In this study, the authors describe the damage to underground structures by the doublet Kahramanmaraş earthquakes with some detailed analyses of Erkenek tunnels. Furthermore, the causes of the damages are described and their implications on the seismic design of underground structures are discussed. The observations indicated that underground openings crossing by faults and fracture zones may be enlarged to accommodate relative slips along faults and fracture zones. Furthermore, the ductility of support should be high in such zones in order to prevent brittle failure, which may have very disastrous effects. In addition to man-made underground structures, natural underground rock structures may be damaged or sinkholes may be caused by earthquakes as observed in the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. The computational results clearly explain why the valley-side of one of the tunnels was more damaged compared to that of the mountain-side tunnel. It is also noted that some of the sinkholes in the earthquake region can be explained using some techniques available in literature.

Abstract:Tunnels serve as vital arteries in the realm of transportation and infrastructure, facilitating the seamless flow of movement across challenging terrains. With the increasing demand experienced by the traffic network on the Tibetan Plateau, deep-buried, lengthy tunnels have become one of the extremely important types of roads for local residents to pass through. Geological disaster susceptibility mapping by hybrid models has been proven to be an effective means to reduce the losses caused by disasters in a large area. However, there has been relatively little research conducted in tunnel areas with significant human activity. To explore the feasibility of conducting geological disaster susceptibility assessment in tunnel areas, we chose the Atal Tunnel as a study project; as a strategic passageway, this exemplifies the significant geological hurdles encountered on the Tibetan Plateau. Employing multi-source remote sensing data, we meticulously mapped the distribution of geological disasters and identified nine environmental and geological variables pivotal for susceptibility evaluation. We harnessed interpretable ensemble learning models to assess this susceptibility, comparing the efficacy of four distinct models: the weight of evidence method (WoE), the frequency ratio (FR), logistic regression (LR) and the support vector machine (SVM). The precision of our findings was rigorously tested using metrics such as the percentage of disaster area encompassed within each risk level, the Area Under the Curve (AUC) value, and the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, and all results were highly accurate. Notably, the WoE-LR model achieved superior performance, boasting an impressive accuracy rate of 90.7%. Through model interpretation, we discerned that the alignment of the road line is the most critical determinant in the evaluation of tunnel geological disaster susceptibility, underscoring the high precision of our model. The extension and successful application of this research in plateau areas hold profound implications for sustainable development. Moreover, the practical application of these research findings will provide a practical reference for the design and construction of projects in similar plateau areas, with positive outcomes that extend well beyond the immediate geographical area of the projects.

Natural Hazards

Abstract:Cascading hazards are becoming more prevalent in the central Himalayas. Primary hazards (e.g., earthquakes, avalanches, and landslides) often trigger secondary hazards (e.g., landslide dam, debris flow, and flooding), compounding the risks to human settlements, infrastructures, and ecosystems. Risk management strategies are commonly tailored to a single hazard, leaving human and natural systems vulnerable to cascading hazards. In this commentary, we characterize diverse natural hazards in the central Himalayas, including their cascading mechanisms and potential impacts. A scientifically sound understanding of the cascading hazards, underlying mechanisms, and appropriate tools to account for the compounding risks are crucial to informing the design of risk management strategies. We also discuss the need for an integrated modeling framework, reliable prediction and early warning system, and sustainable disaster mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Abstract:This research focuses on evaluating the rock masses geotechnical properties and recommending the optimal support design for an adit tunnel being constructed in the North Western Himalaya, India. Predicting rock mass behaviour with precision is dependent on accurate characterisation of in-situ rock mass properties. Tunnel performance in discontinuous rock masses is determined by geometric properties of discontinuities, resistance properties of the intact rock, and the influence of water. Difficulties emerge because the factors that describe these features are distributed rather than distinct. During the last 50 years, there has been significant progress in the stochastic description of discontinuous rock masses and the statistical distribution of their geometric properties. The tunnelling quality index (Q) and rock mass rating classifications were used to characterize the rock mass and based on rock mass categories; methodology of excavation was finalised. New Austrian Tunnelling method was utilised for the recommendation of tunnel support and primary support measures executed included forepoling, shotcrete, rock bolts, lattice girder, and steel ribs. The 2D finite element method was used to estimate the effectiveness of support design, plastic zone size, and deformations. The input geotechnical parameters which were required for modelling were derived/estimated. On the crown and walls, maximum displacement observed was 13.0 mm and 18.0 mm respectively. Using the MN curve, the capacity of a reinforced shotcrete section to resist bending and cracking is determined. Modelling indicated that support recommended was sufficient for adit tunnel stability point of view and deformation was within the permissible limit.

Abstract:Tunnelling in the fault fracture zone is prone to collapse accidents. The failure characteristics and mechanism of a tunnel collapse in Qinghai were analyzed based on the theory of rock mechanics, discrete element method (DEM), and in-situ test. The results show that the construction disturbance leads to the activation of the granite fracture zone, in which many fissures are constantly eroded and expanded to conduct water, which is the main reason for reducing surrounding rock stability after tunnel excavation. DEM simulates the failure process of the surrounding rock, and the collapse arch is observed. The uneven distribution of the stress field in the whole model is consistent with the tunnel's asymmetric failure phenomenon. Based on the results, treatments such as grouting, enhanced primary support, and advanced pipe roofs were adopted to improve the mechanical properties of fissures and enhance the stability of the surrounding rock. This case provides valuable lessons for similar tunnels.
