Abstract:The Kashmir "seismic gap" in NW Himalaya is marked by hinterland‐to‐foreland reduction in GPS‐geodetic arc‐normal convergence‐velocity and increase in horizontal strain‐rate, associated with occurrence of moderate‐to‐small earthquakes. We analyze continuous waveforms from Jammu and Kashmir seismological network (2015–2017) to detect and preliminarily locate 1064 events, followed by probabilistic non‐linear relocation of 360 well‐located local earthquakes, with magnitudes 0.6–4.7 and hypocentral depths 0–60 km. Hypocenters shallower than 20 km lie on or above the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT), clustered beneath the Kishtwar Higher‐Himalaya. Hinterlandward dipping seismicity‐clusters coincide with a MHT mid‐crustal frontal ramp, marking a ∼ 50 km wide locked‐to‐creep transition. The frictionally‐locked up‐dip MHT segment is ∼ 100 km wide, capable of hosting a Mw∼ 8.4 earthquake, if ruptured completely. Clustered seismicity SW of the Kishtwar Window and to its east illuminate MHT lateral‐ramps, which may limit the rupture width and/or modulate the rupture propagation. Entirely seismogenic underthrust Indian‐crust poses additional hazard from large earthquakes within it.

Strain Accumulation along Various Faults in the Kashmir Himalaya from InSAR

Abstract:We are using InSAR time-series analysis to measure the interseismic deformation across various faults of the Kashmir Himalaya. Active faults reaching the surface include the Main Boundary Faults, Bagh-Balakot Fault, which ruptured in the 2005 Kashmir earthquake (Mw 7.6), Jhelum Fault, Reasi Thrust and intra-Kashmir basin faults. We concentrate on these shallow faults that are closest to the people living in Kashmir. The Main Boundary Faults and other faults likely connect to the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) that is the plate-boundary megathrust beneath Kashmir and the rest of the Himalayas. The MHT has been suggested as a possible source for Mw 8 to Mw 8.5 earthquakes in this area. We have processed interferometric pairs from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency ALOS-2 L-band (24 cm wavelength) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) wide-swath (ScanSAR) data acquired between 2015 and 2020. Initial interferometric SAR (InSAR) processing was carried out using the alos2App application of the InSAR Scientific Computing Environment (ISCE2) package, with ionospheric corrections enabled. We found that many scenes acquired in the winter form pairs that have low coherence due to snow cover in the High Himalayas and Pir Panjal Range. We also found that phase unwrapping in the mountains was improved by taking 10 range and 56 azimuth looks from the full-aperture ScanSAR for an effective resolution of about 200 meters. We are running a co-registered stack processing of the ALOS-2 SAR data, with self-consistent ionospheric corrections estimated using the split-spectrum method, using the new alosStack application of ISCE2 package to carry out time-series InSAR analysis, using an open-source Python toolbox, MIntPy.

Abstract:The analysis of earthquake data related to low-magnitude events provides vital information on seismotectonics and the seismic processes that generate seismic sequences with strong events. Kashmir Valley in the northwest Himalaya experiences seismic shaking due to near-field and far-field earthquakes. A seismic network consisting of 12 broadband seismic stations was installed in the Kashmir Valley in 2019 to monitor the local seismic activity. Data recorded by this network is analysed continuously 24×7 at 10-sec intervals to monitor earthquake activity in and adjoining regions of the Kashmir Valley. The determined fault plane solutions using local seismic data and centroid moment tensor (CMT) data reveal thrust faulting in and around the Kashmir Valley. The waveform analysis of the acquired data shows the occurrence of seismic events both from local (432 events between 2019 and 2022) and distant/teleseismic sources. The study area is devoid of major earthquakes because most of the crustal motion is accommodated by the basal detachment or Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) beneath the surface. This results in the accumulation of significant stress within the Earth's crust in the southern region of the valley. However, a local tectonic element (Balapora Thrust) in association with Magam Fault has produced some seismic events of low magnitude. This suggests that Balapora Thrust and other minor fault (Magam Fault) are active in the Kashmir Valley.

Abstract:Abstract We present GPS velocities in Kashmir valley and adjoining regions from continuous Global Positioning System (cGPS) network during 2008 to 2019. Results indicate total arc normal shortening rates of ~ 14 mm/year across this transect of Himalaya that is comparable to the rates of ~ 10 to 20 mm/year reported else-where in the 2500 km Himalaya Arc. For the first time in Himalayas, arc-parallel extension rate of ~ 7 mm/year was recorded in the Kashmir valley, pointing to oblique deformation. Inverse modeling of the contemporary deformation rates in Kashmir valley indicate oblique slip of ~ 16 mm/year along the decollement with locking depth of ~ 15 km and width of ~ 145 km. This result is consistent with the recorded micro-seismicity and low velocity layer at a depth of 12 to 16 km beneath the Kashmir valley obtained from collocated broadband seismic network. Geodetic strain rates are consistent with the dislocation model and micro-seismic activity, with high strain accumulation (~ 7e−08 maximum compression) to the north of Kashmir valley and south of Zanskar ranges. Assuming the stored energy was fully released during 1555 earthquake, high geodetic strain rate since then and observed micro-seismicity point to probable future large earthquakes of Mw ~ 7.7 in Kashmir seismic gap.

Abstract:InSAR and deep‐learning detected 1066 slow‐moving landslides in the Hazara Kashmir Fault zones control the spatial distribution of the detected landslides. Implications for less‐monitored, contemporary uplifting high‐mountain regions. Slow‐moving landslides play important roles in the landscape evolution and hazards planning. Studies along some strike‐slip faults have shown that the geological structures and bed‐rock lithology significantly contribute the distribution of slow‐moving landslides. However, controls on the distribution of slow‐moving landslides are poorly constrained in active orogenic regions, hindering our understanding of its role in the rapid orogenic process. The Hazara Kashmir Syntaxis in Pakistan is such a prominent geological structure of lesser Himalaya, where the inventory of slow‐moving landslides is scarce. Here, we attempt the interferometric synthetic aperture radar phase‐gradient stacking coupled with a deep‐learning system to provide the first slow‐moving landslides inventory (1066 presently active landslides, 2016–2023) in the Hazara‐Kashmir region. Along with optical imagery and field investigations, we analyse the impacts of fault structures, bed‐rock lithology, topography along with spatial distribution of earthquake and precipitation on the distribution of these slow‐moving landslides. We find that 33% of the detected slow‐moving landslides are distributed within 1000 m to active faults, and show a decreasing trend moving away from fault zones. This pattern strongly suggests that the active thrusting faults in this region significantly controls the distribution of slow‐moving landslides, while topography and precipitation show less impacts. Our study reveals the spatial distribution of slow‐moving landslides in a tectonic complex region with rapid orogenic process, and thus shows potential implications in geomorphology modelling and hazards evaluation for many less‐monitored, contemporary uplifting high‐mountain regions.

Estimation of crustal strain in Kashmir Himalayan region of north India using continuous GPS measurements

Abstract:In this study, we estimated the current status of deformation in the Kashmir Valley, part of NW Himalaya using GPS measurements. The average velocity of the GPS sites estimated in ITRF14 of the Kashmir region range between 30 and 42 ± 1 mm/year. The results show that the average compression component (area strain) is −7.2 × 10−8 strain/year and the average maximum principal shear strain γmax is 1.9 × 10−7 strain per year. The maximum area strain value of −1.6 × 10−9 strain/year indicates that southeast and northwest areas of Kashmir Himalaya are accumulating maximum strain. Global positioning system (GPS) measurements of crustal deformation provide insight into the crustal plate velocity and strain rate variation in the actively deforming Earth's crust. GPS measurements in the Kashmir Himalaya indicate that most of the crustal motion between the Indian Plate and southern China is accommodated along the Himalayan arc, resulting in the accumulation of crustal strain and locking of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT). Here, we present geodetically estimated spatial and temporal crustal strain rates in the Kashmir Himalaya from GPS measurements to understand the nature of crustal deformation. We processed and analysed GPS data from 21 sites across Kashmir Himalaya along with several IGS sites. We find that the average deformation rate of the GPS sites in Kashmir Himalaya with reference to the Indian Plate range between 2.8 and 15.5 ± 1 mm/year. The GPS results illustrate that the strain rate field is dominated by a compression component with its rate as 7.2 × 10−8 strain/year and the maximum shear strain, γmax, of 1.9 × 10−7 strain/year. The earthquake focal mechanisms suggest that earthquake activity in the Kashmir Himalaya is predominantly manifested in the form of thrust motion. The maximum principal shear strain value reflects that the Kashmir Himalaya is under NE–SW compressional regime. The spatial distribution of crustal strain indicates that the region north‐east of Kashmir Valley is accumulating maximum strain, resulting in the stress build‐up and could be the region of a future large earthquake.

Abstract:In the present study, an attempt has been made to delineate anomalous morphotectonic elements in the lower valley of Ravi and Beas rivers of the NW Himalaya by utilising the digital elevation model (DEM) as well as GIS based approach. We selected the surrounding areas of both the rivers as these have developed tectonically formed lakes such as Khajjiar and Rewalsar in late Holocene and lie in the north and south of Kangra re-entrant structure. We generated topographic swath profiles, calculated normalized steepness index (ksn) and hypsometric integral (HI) and conducted lineament analysis and finally correlated the obtained data set with the contemporaneous seismicity to decode the tectonic activity in the region. Based on the calculated HI for both the areas as 0.45 and 0.47, we infer that there are anomalous changes in the steepness, pointing to the presence of active tectonics. By using lineament analysis, geological information and the quantitative analysis, we identified lineaments parallel and oblique to the regional strike of the NW Himalaya, indicating the area as tectonically active. The lower steepness values along the inferred lineaments suggest the presence of strike-slip features that absorb the oblique convergence of the Indian plate with Eurasia. The GPS based additional observations suggest significant amount of deformation, showing higher deformation rate in the vicinity of the Khajjiar as compared to the Rewalsar locality. Based on remote sensing and GIS based approaches, we conclude that the study area is tectonically very active, hence there is need of careful examination of identified structures and impact on the development of infrastructure and seismic hazard assessment of the western Himalaya.

Abstract:Srinagar city is located in the heart of the Kashmir valley of the northwest Himalaya and is the largest urban center in the seismically active region. As yet, no direct deformation measurement or observation of any kind has been made in Srinagar and the surrounding areas using InSAR. We detect and quantify the ground deformation in the city's western flank using the InSAR time series. Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterer (StaMPS) is employed to process Sentinel-1A radar images acquired between 2015 and 2022 for ascending (161 scenes) and 2020 to 2022 for descending track (31 scenes). Generated velocity fields were decomposed into vertical rate maps, revealing a deformation of 17 mm year −1 for ascending and 19 mm year −1 for descending track. Time series analysis exhibits an identical deformation rate for both tracks on concurrent dates. Time-series GPS data was employed to validate the outcomes of our InSAR analysis. A field survey conducted in the main zone of deformation revealed extensive damage to structures in the form of wide cracks. Such cracks develop in older infrastructure (~ 8 years) due to cumulative ground deformation over several years. Geotechnical investigation and strength calculation on a 30-m borehole of the subsiding region shows a vertical domination of high void, floodplain soils, with appreciable amounts of decomposed organic matter and lower shear strength parameters that are prone to volume reduction and particle rearrangement upon wetting and loading. The overall relevance of this study is in detecting and quantifying such subsidence in the Kashmir basin using SAR remote sensing. We also seek to establish a linkage of this deformation with the local stratum to allow for more consideration and efficient planning of civil infrastructure in the subsidence-prone regions of the citified zone and appropriate management of the subsidence-induced risk.

Abstract:The Kumaun Himalaya is considered as the most active part of the Central Seismic gap in the Indian Sub-continent. In this paper, we presented active surface deformation rates of the Kumaun region from February 2017 to February 2021 using the Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSI) technique. The cumulative displacement that occurred during the span of 4 years is ±55 mm, whereas the Line of Sight (LOS) deformation velocity rate ranges is ±7 mm/yr. Apart from PSI, we also estimated the b-value of the Kumaun region from 1803 to 2021 (399 events) and its value is 0.54 ± 0.03. A distinct NE-SW trend of b-value is observed where earthquakes with M > 6 occurred towards NE of this trend. The PSI-derived deformation reveals that the central part of the Inner Lesser Himalaya along with the Main Central Thrust (MCT) zone is dominated by uplift. The zone between the Munsiari Thrust (MT) and MCT in the central region shows the maximum uplift ranging 5–7 mm/yr which exactly lies above the mid-crustal ramp of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT). Our results are well corroborated with available observations of geodetic strain and peak ground acceleration values. However, the deformation patterns and high-velocity rates in the central part of the study area between MT and MCT indicate the accumulation of high stress.

Seismological evidence for intra-crustal low velocity and thick mantle transition zones in the north-west Himalaya

Abstract:The Himalayan region witnesses several natural hazards like earthquakes and landslides due to the continental collisions between the Indian and Eurasian plates. This has given rise to extreme topographic variations throughout the Himalayan belt. The Kumaun–Garhwal region is a classic example of such geological consequences and is prone to several earthquakes. High-quality three-component teleseismic waveform data recorded at seven seismological stations operated by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) are used to investigate the detailed subsurface structure of the crust, the intra-crustal low-velocity layer (LVL), and the upper mantle discontinuities beneath the Kumaun–Garhwal, north-west Himalaya. The results, derived from the inversion of individual station's stacked P-receiver functions (PRFs) using the neighbourhood algorithm approach, show that the crustal thickness varies from 44 to 54 km beneath the study region. The depth of LVL observed beneath six stations from individual and stacked PRFs, varies from 9 to 24 km. The LVL zone with a high V p / V s ratio may be due to fluid or partial melt, leading to shallow seismic activity within the study region. The presence of fluid or partial melts in the LVL may be due to the shear heating, cooling, and decompression. The 2D PRF migration image depicts a thick mantle transition zone due to the elevated 410 km discontinuity with respect to the global average values predicted by the IASP91 velocity model. The present research suggests that this might be due to the colder transition zone in this region, indicating the cool underthrust Indian plate with respect to the ambient mantle has reached down to the upper mantle transition zone.

Strike-slip Structures and Oil-Gas Exploration in the NW Margin of the Junggar Basin,China

Abstract:The fault system in the NW margin of the Junggar Basin,western China,affords an exceptional opportunity to document structural features of a major strike-slip fault using two-and three-dimensional seismic reflection and magnetotelluric(MT) data.The fault zone displayed vertical strike-slip faults and positive flower structures,in which three structural units,the Zaire-Halaalat uplifted belt(Dalabute strike-slip fault),the Keramay-Xiazijie fault block folded belt,and the Mahu Lake slope belt were identified in the NW margin of the Junggar Basin.The right lateral strike-slip deformation occurs commonly in this margin,thus vertical strike-slip faults and en echelon brachy plunging anticlines(nose-like structure) are well-developed in the Zaire-Haraalat uplifted belt close to the Dalabute strike-slip fault,while thrust-nappe faults and linear folds are seldom seen.Devonian to Upper Carboniferous volcanic,volcaniclastic and flysch rocks crop out along the belt.The Keramay-Xiazijie fault-block folded belt consists of slip faults and en echelon folds.The stepping pattern and orientation of en echelon structures indicated a right-lateral sense about N20—40E azimuth of slip in the west part and W-E azimuth of slip in the east part of the Keramay-Xiazijie belt.Fault segments with a clockwise orientation were characterized by convergent structures.The Carboniferous,Permian and Triassic had folded and formed unconformity by Jurassic and Cretaceous,indicating a deformation developed in Late Permian to Triassic.The exposed Dalabute fault was reactivated in Cenozoic,which was affected by the long-distance compression of the Cenozoic India-Asia collision.The NW margin of the Junggar Basin was not apparently deformed in Cenozoic and three different types of potential hydrocarbon traps were formed in the NW margin of the Junggar Basin,they are drape unconformity lithologic traps in the uplifted belt,anticlinal fault-block traps in the Keramay-Xiazijie fault block folded belt and unconformity-controlled lithologic traps in the Mahu Lake slope belt.
Complex Multi‐Fault Dynamics in Sikkim Himalaya: New Insights From Local Earthquake Analysis

Abstract:Anomalously overturned thrust faults, lineaments and segmentation causing cross‐cutting basement structures characterize the tectonic setting of Sikkim Himalaya. However, its seismotectonics is poorly constrained along with the speculated northward extension of the Dhubri‐Chungthang Fault Zone (DCFZ) causing segmentation. Here, we utilize the precise location of newly acquired local earthquake data and fault plane solutions using full‐waveform moment tensor inversion to better constrain seismically active zones. Transtensional shearing along the Main Himalayan Thrust in central Sikkim is possibly incited by fluid‐rich upper‐crust. Cessation of the mapped 20 km wide mid‐crustal seismogenic zone of DCFZ at Chungthang and its northward discontinuation into the Higher Himalayas is confirmed by the striking variation in focal mechanisms. Earthquakes along imbricated segments in the lower‐crust originate possibly in response to crustal shortening. Extensional shearing along the Moho triggers seismicity to the northwest of Sikkim. Such complex tectonic dynamics instigating persistent seismicity indicates high potential for future great earthquakes in Sikkim Himalaya.

Abstract:<p>Lineament extraction technique is a very considerate method for the study of regional structural geology and tectonics. Lineaments are geomorphological features associated with fractures at a scale ranging from meters to tens of kilometer. In this work, an attempt of automatic extraction of lineaments and their morphotectonic interpretation has been made by satellite image processing in the NW part of HFT. Lineaments are auto-extracted from Landsat-8 OLI using PCI Geomatica software to achieve this objective edge enhancement, and filtering techniques were used. The methodology of this work enumerates the following steps: (1) pansharpening, (2) principal component analysis, (3) directional filtering, (4) lineament extraction, (5) density map generation, and (6) trend analysis. Extracted lineaments were draped over Cartosat DEM-derived ancillary products to understand the morphotectonic condition of the area. The orientation analysis of the extracted lineaments indicates that the major trend of linear features in the study area is NW–SE and parallel to the major structural trend (NNW–SSE). The trend of lineaments is in concordance with the direction of major faults, fractures, and associated geomorphological features. The lineament density value is relatively higher in the high relief area owing to the presence of fractured rocks to the structurally active terrain along the Siwalik range. The overlapping of lineament over geological map, slope aspect map, and drainage map confirms that some of the lineaments identified in the area are morphological features associated with fractures and faults. The study reveals that analysis of extracted lineament with the geological map and DEM gives a good interpretation of active morphotectonics in the parts of northwestern HFT.</p>

High-resolution velocity and strain rate fields in the Kumaun Himalaya: An implication for seismic moment budget

Abstract:The collision between Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates results in a series of earthquakes, releasing stored elastic strain accumulated over a long period. This research utilizes 22 new and 26 previously published GPS velocities along with nine years of InSAR observations to estimate high-resolution velocity and strain rate fields across the Kumaun Himalaya. The resulting high-resolution velocity field ranges between 0.5 and 14 mm/yr relative to the India-fixed reference frame. The geodetic strain rate is not uniform across the study region and the higher strain rates are observed along the Main Central Thrust. The areal change rate along the Kumaun Himalaya indicates a significant amount of tectonic compression, with an average value of − 0.08 μstrain ∕ yr , while the maximum shear strain rate in the region has a mean value of 0.08 μstrain ∕ yr . The moment deficit rate, based on accumulated strain and energy release over 200 years, turns out to be 7.59 × 10 18 Nm ∕ yr along the Kumaun Himalaya. This suggests that the study region can generate a great earthquake (Mw 8.1) in the future.

Abstract:Afghanistan experiences major geological changes since it is situated in a tectonically active area where the Eurasian and Indian plates collide. The influence of the convergence reaches hundreds of kilometers beyond the boundary of the southeastern plate. High mountain ranges are shaped by the faulting, folding, and uplifting of rocks; these formations are like a complicated jigsaw puzzle, with each piece revealing a different geological narrative. During fieldwork, using a Keyhole Markup Language Zipped (KMZ) file made comprehension easier. The left-lateral strike-slip character of the active Gardez fault was revealed by combining precise image analysis and correlation with satellite imagery, which was essential for comprehensive insights during laboratory processing. Our knowledge was significantly enhanced by the topographic representation of the Sarobi fault. The Cimmerian Kandahar arc and the active Chaman and Gardez faults to the west surrounded the Katawaz basin, which was the subject of the investigation. Geological boundaries were emphasized by ophiolites situated along the north-south axial strip towards the east. Pliocene sediments predominate, and recurring tremors indicate that block movements are still occurring, which could be a sign of impending large earthquakes. This study combines morpho-tectonic analysis with the interpretation of satellite images to reveal the characteristics of the active Gardez fault and comprehend the larger geological background of Afghanistan. The results provide insightful information on dynamic geological processes and have implications for future mitigation initiatives in the area as well as the assessment of seismic danger.
Fault activity, tectonic segmentation, and deformation pattern of the western Himalaya on Ma timescales inferred from landscape morphology

Abstract:The location and magnitude of Himalayan tectonic activity has been debated for decades, and several aspects remain unknown. For instance, the spatial distribution of crustal shortening that ultimately sustains Himalayan topography and the activity of major fault zones remain unknown at Ma timescales. In this study, we address the spatial deformation pattern in the data-scarce western Himalaya. We calculated catchment averaged, normalized river-steepness indices of non-glaciated drainage basins with tributary catchment areas between 5 and 200 km2 (n = 2138). We analyzed the spatial distribution of the relative change of river steepness both along and across strike to gain information about the regional distribution of differential uplift pattern and relate this to the activity of distinctive fault segments. For our study area, we observe a positive correlation of averaged ksn values with long-term exhumation rates derived from previously published thermochronologic datasets combined with thermal modeling as well as with millennial timescale denudation rates based on cosmogenic nuclide dating. Our results indicate three tectono-geomorphic segments with distinctive landscape morphology, structural architecture, and fault geometry along the western Himalaya: Garhwal-Sutlej, Chamba, and Kashmir Himalaya (from east to west). Moreover, our data recognize distinctive fault segments showing varying thrust activity along strike of the Main Frontal Thrust, the Main Boundary Thrust, and in the vicinity of the steep topographic transition between the Lesser and Greater Himalaya. In this region, we relate out-of-sequence deformation along major basement thrust ramps, such as the Munsiari Thrust with deformation along a mid-crustal ramp along the basal décollement. We suggest that during the Quaternary, all major fault zones in the Western Himalaya experienced out-of-sequence faulting and have accommodated some portion of crustal shortening.

Abstract:Deformational history of the Hazara basin indicates a primitive collision of the two landmasses that undergoes an episodic deformation with NE-SW structural trend. Panjal Thrust (PT) and Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) demarcate the northern and southern extremities of the basin, respectively. The area bounded between these two thrusts is the core consideration of the present research. Different stratigraphic units juxtapose along the Hazara Kashmir Syntaxes (HKS), while the strike-slip component is indicated by imbrication due to thrusts. The study is amied to analyze the paleo-stresses along with developed fracture patterns. Field data were collected via Circle Inventory Method from various localities of the Ghumawan dome, Hazara basin. The zones of upper Cretaceous to Eocene carbonates were mainly targeted during the data collection. Win-Tensor was the key software that helps to analyze the paleo-stresses and fracture pattern of the study area. NW-trending fracture pattern was observed with a highly non-symmetric to dense fracture pattern. The local thrust system lead to severely de-shape the study area. N-S oriented σ1 indicated the compressional tectonic conditionthat prevailed during deformation of this area. Some segments also show extensional features i.e. normal faulting.
Spatial Distribution of Intermediate Earthquakes and Focal Mechanism Solutions in the Pamir-Hindu Kush Region

Abstract:In this paper, high quality seismic data in 1964 similar to 2003 from the ISC (International Seismological Centre) catalog is used to present a relatively more complete and definite geometric structure of the intermediate seismic zone in the Pamir-Hindu Kush region. Dip directions and the largest depth of the Hindu Kush intermediate seismic zone (H zone) and the Pamir intermediate seismic zone (P zone) change along the strike, so they can be further divided into five segments: HW (west segment of the H zone), HE (east segment of the H zone), PSW (southwest segment of the P zone), PM ( middle segment of the P zone), and PNE (northeast segment of the P zone). There is a seismic gap in the H zone at about 170 - 190 kin depth, beneath which the seismic zone dips nearly vertically. Meanwhile, seismic zone beneath the gap forms an inverted V shape zone, the two branches of which are nearly perpendicular with each other. The west branch within the HW segment does not have double seismic layers. The east branch within the HE segment is deeper and has double seismic layers. Focal mechanism solutions of the intermediate earthquakes have regular patterns. In the Hindu Kush region, most T axes are nearly vertical while most P axes are nearly horizontal and perpendicular to the strike of the seismic zone. In the Pamir region, from southwest to northeast, the horizontal axis along the strike changes from P to B and then T; P axes gradually change to be perpendicular to the strike. At last, we discuss the possible geodynamic explanation for the seismicity in this region.

Abstract:Geochemical and geochronological analyses provide quantitative evidence about the origin, development and motion along ductile faults, where kinematic structures have been overprinted. The Main Central Thrust is a key structure in the Himalaya that accommodated substantial amounts of the India–Asia convergence. This structure juxtaposes two isotopically distinct rock packages across a zone of ductile deformation. Structural analysis, whole-rock Nd isotopes, and U–Pb zircon geochronology reveal that the hanging wall is characterized by detrital zircon peaks at c. 800–1000 Ma, 1500–1700 Ma and 2300–2500 Ma and an ϵNd(0) signature of −18.3 to −12.1, and is intruded by c. 800 Ma and c. 500–600 Ma granites. In contrast, the footwall has a prominent detrital zircon peak at c. 1800–1900 Ma, with older populations spanning 1900–3600 Ma, and an ϵNd(0) signature of −27.7 to −23.4, intruded by c. 1830 Ma granites. The data reveal a c. 5 km thick zone of tectonic imbrication, where isotopically out-of-sequence packages are interleaved. The rocks became imbricated as the once proximal and distal rocks of the Indian margin were juxtaposed by Cenozoic movement along the Main Central Thrust. Geochronological and isotopic characterization allows for correlation along the Himalayan orogen and could be applied to other cryptic ductile shear zones. Abstract:The complexity of surface and subsurface structures makes Kuqa complex and cliffy structural trap be difficultly ascertained.Since 2005,the stress has been placed on study of complex mountainous seismic exploration technique,especially related seismic acquisition and fine velocity modeling techniques,and finally establishing a systematic method for ascertaining complex cliffy structural traps.This paper presents the method,including the seismic acquisition technique for ascertaining structural style,the superficial velocity inversion modeling technique,T0 drift correction technique and variable velocity mapping technique,for determination of cliffy structural traps.Also,the prestack depth migration outcome at the main part of structure is used to make a correlation and validation for the purpose of improving the precision of ascertaining the complex cliffy structural traps.The application of this method to complex mountains in Tarim basin receives good effectiveness.
