Abstract:Radiation was generated between 1210 and 1230 A by four-wave sum mixing in beryllium vapor where the 2s(2)(1)S-2s3d(1)D transition was two-photon resonant. Results indicate that beryllium will be an efficient nonlinear medium in this spectral region with improvements to the stability of the furnace to allow phase matching and operation at higher pressures.

Abstract:In this study, peracetic acid (PAA) is successfully activated by cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4/PAA) to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Increasing either PAA (25―200 μM) or CoFe2O4 (25―200 mg/L) dose accelerated SMX degradation in the CoFe2O4/PAA system, and the best removal of SMX (87.3%) was acquired with 200 μM PAA and 0.1 g/L CoFe2O4 at neutral condition. Addition of humic acid or HCO3– inhibited SMX removal, whereas Cl– had little impact. The redox cycle of ≡Co3+/≡Co2+ on the CoFe2O4 surface dominated PAA activation to produce organic radicals (R-O•) including CH3C(O)O• and CH3C(O)OO• accounting for SMX degradation. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculation and identified oxidation products, SMX transformation pathway was proposed to be initiated by electron transfer reaction with R-O•. The insignificant variation of acute toxicity, the fine CoFe2O4 stability and the good removal of some other micro-organic pollutants suggested the potential applicability of the CoFe2O4/PAA system in degrading micro-organic pollutants.

Abstract:Activation of peracetic acid (PAA) for pollutants degradation has been a hotspot recently. In this study, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was first employed to enhance sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation in the Fe(III)/PAA process at pH 3.0. The addition of MoS2 can not only accelerate the transformation from Fe(III) to Fe(II), but also can directly activate PAA. A series of reactive species including Fe(IV), 1O2, HO●, CH3C(O)O● and CH3C(O)OO● were generated in this Fe(III)/MoS2/PAA process, which was responsible for SMX degradation except 1O2. The increase of MoS2 dosage (0.025−0.2 g/L) accelerated SMX degradation, and the optimum pH was 3.0. The increase of either PAA (0.075−0.45 mM) or Fe(III) concentration (0.025−0.2 mM) also accelerated SMX degradation. However, the higher concentration of SMX, the addition of humic acid, and extra adding H2O2 lowered the removal efficiency of SMX. Based on the identified products, possible pathways of SMX degradation initiated by electron transfer reaction were proposed. Furthermore, a continuous flow reactor configuration was employed to recycle the used MoS2, and the stable removal efficiency of SMX during 6 h reaction brings a new strategy for this process in practical use. This study developed an efficient method to remove SMX and provided a new idea for the PAA activation in water treatment.

Abstract:Activation of peracetic acid (PAA) to generate powerful oxidizing species has become a promising advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in wastewater treatment, yet the development of low-cost and high-performance activators is still a primary challenge. Herein, a range of Co-Mn spinel oxides (Co 3-x Mn x O 4 ) with varying levels of Co and Mn were successfully elaborated, in which Co 1.1 Mn 1.9 O 4 exhibited remarkable performance in PAA activation, outperforming most reported heterogeneous catalysts. Extensive quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis indicated that acetylperoxyl radical (CH 3 C(O)OO ● ) was the predominated oxidizing species responsible for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that doping with Mn not only promoted the electron transfer and accelerated reduction of Co(III) to Co(II), but also lowered the energy barrier for PAA activation. Moreover, the prominent chemisorption and activation of PAA with Co 1.1 Mn 1.9 O 4 was also benefitted from the significant role of Mn in optimizing the distribution of bonding and antibonding states on Co 3d orbitals. Unexpectedly, high levels of Cl − greatly facilitated SMX degradation due to the mass production of HOCl from the chain reactions of various radicals with Cl − . This work provides new insights into bimetallic activation of PAA, and the knowledge obtained will further advance the application of PAA-based AOPs.

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA)-based system is becoming an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP) for effective removal of organic contaminants from water. Various approaches have been tested to activate PAA, while no previous researches reported the application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials for PAA activation. In this study, zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF)-67, a representative MOFs, was facile synthesized via direct-mixing method at room temperature, and tested for PAA activation and sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) degradation. The as-synthesized ZIF-67 exhibited excellent performance for PAA activation and SCP degradation with 100% of SCP degraded within 3 min, owing to the specific MOFs structure and abundant Co2+ sites. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model was applied to fit the kinetic data, with rate constant k 1 of ZIF-67 activated PAA system 34.2 and 156.5 times higher than those of conventional Co3O4 activated PAA and direct oxidation by PAA. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that CH3C(O)OO• played a major role in this PAA activation system. Then, the Fukui index based on density functional theory (DFT) calculation was used to predict the possible reaction sites of SCP for electrophilic attack by CH3C(O)OO•. In addition, the degradation pathway of SCP was proposed based on Fukui index values and intermediates detection, which mainly included the S-N bond cleavage and SO2 extrusion and followed by further oxidation, dechlorination, and hydroxylation. Therefore, ZIF-67 activated PAA is a novel strategy and holds strong potential for the removal of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) from water.

Abstract:The activation of peracetic acid (PAA) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) has emerged as a research hotspot in eliminating organic pollutants. Here, Co@MXene etched with Lewis acid was employed to activate PAA for the treatment of sulfamethazine (SMT) polluted water. The technology had efficient degradation performance for SMT, achieving 82.1% degradation within 8 minutes. Reactive species competition experiment, chemical probe experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses were used to confirm the important role of non-radical pathway. Density Functional Theory calculations were conducted, revealing that the activation of PAA leaded to the generation of acetyl peroxyl radicals with an activation energy barrier, and particularly highlighting the significant contribution of high-valent metals to the degradation of SMT. Electrochemical tests showed that PAA formed a substable complex with Co@MXene to directly degrade SMT. Overall pathways was proposed and the activation status of PAA in surface water was assessed. Ultimately, the aggregate results from this study highlight the impressive activation mechanisms of PAA to further deepen the understanding of PAA-based AOPs.

Unusually Improved Peracetic Acid Activation for Ultrafast Organic Compound Removal Through Redox-Inert Mg Incorporation into Active Co3O4

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA) is increasingly used in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for water purification, yet there remains a critical need for highly-efficient and low-cost activators. Here, we constructed abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) into redox-active Co3O4 by incorporating redox-inert Mg species (MgCoOx), achieving ultrafast degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) via PAA activation. The MgCoOx/PAA system successfully degraded SMX within 3min, with a removal rate 154.8 times higher than the Co3O4/PAA system, surpassing even previously reported single-atom catalysts. The primary active species identified was the acetylperoxyl radical (CH3C(O)OO•), with CoIV-oxo acting as a secondary active species that produced 18O-labeled sulfone compounds. We proposed a novel mechanism involving redox-inert Mg species that simultaneously strengthened PAA adsorption and activation. The enriched surface hydroxyl groups after Mg incorporation elevated the affinity for PAA binding. Meanwhile, the reduced Co average valence state and enhanced electron transfer capability facilitated PAA activation. This study offers an in-depth knowledge of redox-inert alkaline earth metals in PAA-AOPs.

Abstract:This paper proposes an adaptive soft start-up strategy for sensorless control of three-phase BLDC motors in applications to consumer electronics and high efficiency cooling fans. The proposed start-up control scheme combines a closed-loop I/Hz control with adaptive ramping current profile in accordance to different load torque-speed characteristic. The proposed start-up scheme can reduce the start-up current while at the same time provides a robust and smooth start-up for different applications. A synchronous current sampling control scheme based on the dc-link current is developed for the regulation of motor phase current. A start-up current limit profile is calculated based on assumed load torque-speed characteristics. The controller will switch to sensorless control mode once a verified sensorless commutation signal is detected. Simulation and experimental results have been given to show the robustness of the proposed sensorless start-up control scheme.

Abstract:Developing a cost-effective, easy-recycled, pH-independent and efficient activator is promising for the practical application of peracetic acid (PAA) based advanced oxidation process (AOP). In this study, Co@mZVI was synthesized to activate PAA for successful degradation of 96% sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 30 min, while only 40% of the SMX could be removed in the mZVI/PAA system. Co-doping of Co extended the pH tolerance of mZVI as indicated by 90%-98% SMX removal efficiency at the initial pH range of 3.0–9.0. Reactive oxidized species (ROS) including organic radicals, hydroxyl radical (•OH) and Fe(IV) were produced from the Co@mZVI/PAA system. It’s found that the co-doped Co can 1) work as a catalyst to activate PAA with the generation of ROS dominated by CH3CO2• and CH3CO3• in the period of 0–10 min; 2) boost the production of iron ions by accelerating the corrosion of mZVI in the following 10–30 min, in which •OH played a main role in contaminant degradation. The eight intermediate degradation products of SMX resulted from the attack of •OH, CH3CO2• and CH3CO3• were detected and the possible degradation pathways were proposed. The biological acute toxicity of the Co@mZVI system during the treatment of SMX decreased over the reaction time. Additionally, Co@mZVI has good recovery ability and stability, suggesting the potential applicability of the Co@mZVI/PAA system in degrading antibiotics.

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA) has attracted increasing attention in wastewater decontamination for yielding reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, mackinawite (FeS) was synthesized and applied as the heterogeneous catalyst for PAA activation. Using sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the target pollutant, the influences of FeS dosage, PAA dosage and initial pH values on SMX degradation by the FeS/PAA process were investigated. Under optimal conditions, SMX could be completely removed within 5 min with the apparent first-order rate constant (kobs) of 7.71 × 10−4 s−1. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) analysis and radical scavenging experiments were modulated to detect the active species. During the activation process of PAA, various active components were evidenced to be hydroxyl radicals (HO•), singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide radicals (O2•−) and organic radicals (R-O•, e.g., CH3C(O)O• and CH3C(O)OO•), whereas HO• and R-O• were demonstrated as the dominant active species responsible for SMX abatement. Both dissolved Fe(II) ions and active sites on the surface of FeS were proven to be activators for PAA, and SMX abatement was highly promoted as a result. Furthermore, the acidic pH displayed superior efficiency in SMX decomposition compared with alkaline and neutral conditions. Five degradation pathways of SMX were put forward and the toxicity of byproducts was further evaluated. Overall, this study provided an efficient and environmentally friendly PAA activation approach using FeS, which might broaden its applicability in the remediation of micropollutants.

Abstract:It seems to be a feasible strategy to treat organic micro-pollutions in wastewater by enriching pollutants toward the surface of catalyst before its degradation. In this study, NH2-MIL-53(Fe) (metal organic frameworks) surface molecularly imprinted catalyst (MIP-AA) was synthesized for investigating the targeted degradation mechanism of Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The catalyst exhibited the accurate recognition and catalysis property for SMX, and the removal rate of SMX reached 38.04 mg/g collaborated with the adsorption and catalysis of MIP-AA. The degradation mechanism was studied according to the degradation pathways and the results of density functional theory (DFT), which was applied to predict the reaction active sites of SMX. UV–vis analysis and kinetic confirmed that pre-adsorption of MIP-AA mainly concentrated pollutants toward the catalyst through weak interactions such as hydrogen bonds. Besides, the weak interactions would also enrich the intermediate products in the surface of the catalyst to promote its degradation but without affecting the active sites of SMX. Moreover, radical quenching experiments showed that ·OH was the predominant free radical and the imprinted layer in MIP-AA was not affected its generation. These results indicated that the imprinted layer only provided the recognition sites and specific pore structures but not involved the process of catalysis. These characteristics ultimately led to the reduction of types of intermediate products and degradation pathways of SMX in the MIP-AA catalysis system.

Abstract:Developing catalysts with high efficiency is a long-term goal of the sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) for emerging contaminant degradations. In this work, a series of transition metal (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn)-substituted hollow cobalt-based bimetallic sulfide polyhedrons (MxCo3-xS4) were fabricated using MOF-templated sulfuration strategy. The hollow structure supplied a highly reactive shell containing abundant exposed active sites while density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that metal substitution increased positive charge density of Co atoms and facilitated PMS adsorption on catalyst surface. The as-synthesized polyhedrons exhibited superior catalytic activities for sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation over a broad pH range (pH = 2-11). Mn0.3Co2.7S4 polyhedrons were selected as the target catalysts for the best performance with nearly 97% SMT was removed within 8 min with the apparent rate constant of 0.363 min(-1) , which was higher than those of reported researches by 3-4 times. Multiple reactive oxygen species including sulfate radical (SO4-center dot), superoxide radical (O-2(center dot-)) and singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) were determined to work by quenching test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Furthermore, the catalysts showed good reusability for SMT degradation in the presence of PMS over five runs. This work shed new light on the feasibility and superiority of metal substitution in synergistically improving the catalytic activity of cobalt sulfides, and provided a novel class of Co-based catalysts for recalcitrant contaminants degradation by SR-AOPs.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials have drawn tremendous attention as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of antibiotics. However, it is still challenging to construct MOF-derived materials with well-dispersed and highly-exposed metal active sites. Herein, the bimetallic Cobalt-Zinc-zeolite imidazolate framework and melamine co-derived double layer nitrogen-doped porous carbon matrix supported highly dispersed cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) (denoted as Co-NC-C) with the exposure of more Co NPs sites was developed by one-step pyrolysis method. The transmission electron microscopy results demonstrate that double layer carbon matrix as a dispersant can effectively inhibit the agglomeration of Co NPs, and Co-NC-C possessed more exposure of Co active sites compared with Co-NC without melamine. Co-NC-C efficiently activated PMS to remove over 96.67% of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at a widespread range of pH within 120 min due to its the highly-exposed Co active sites and high graphitization degree. Additionally, the degradation mechanism dominated by the singlet oxygen was demonstrated. Finally, four products and two probable degradation pathways of SMX were confirmed. Half of the products were less toxic than SMX based on the ecological structure activity relationships analysis results. The study provides valuable insights for the development of MOF-derived catalysts with well-dispersed and highly-exposed metal active sites.

Abstract:Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) are typical antibiotics and have attracted increasing concerns about their wide occurrence in environment as well as potential risk for human health. In this study, we applied a novel advanced oxidation process in SAs degradation by combining molybdenum sulfide and peracetic acid (MoS2/PAA). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) including HO●, CH3C(O)O●, CH3C(O)OO●, and 1O2 were generated from PAA by MoS2 activation and contributed to SAs degradation. The effects of initial pH, the dosages of PAA and MoS2, and humic acid for SAs degradation were further evaluated by selecting sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as a target SA in the MoS2/PAA process. Results suggested that the optimum pH for SMX removal was 3, where the degradation efficiency of SMX was higher than 80% after reaction for 15 min. Increasing PAA (0.075 – 0.45 mM) or MoS2 (0.1 – 0.4 g/L) dosages facilitated the SMX degradation, while the presence of humic acids retarded the SMX removal. This MoS2/PAA process also showed good efficiencies in removing other SAs including sulfaguanidine, sulfamonomethoxine and sulfamerazine. Their possible degradation pathways were proposed based on the products identification and DFT calculation, showing that apart from the oxidation of amine groups to nitro groups in SAs, MoS2/PAA induced SO2 extrusion reaction for SAs that contained six-membered heterocyclic moieties.

Abstract:The performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in removal of hazardous contaminants is a topic of great significance for aqueous environments. In this study, bimetallic MOFs (FeCo-MOF-74) based on the organic linker 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzene dicarboxylate (DHTA) and divalent cations (Fe and Co) were successfully synthesized for degradation of phenanthrene (PHE). The crystallinity, morphology, and chemical valence state of the synthesized FeCo-MOF-74 were analyzed using XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS, respectively. Moreover, effects of the preparation parameters, including the synthetic temperature and loading dosage were evaluated. The results demonstrated that Fe1Co1-MOF-74 with a low dosage (50.0 mg/L) could efficiently activate PMS to achieve 100% removal of PHE. PHE degradation followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic well with the rate constants ranging from 0.053 to 0.124 min−1 depending on the synthetic conditions of FeCo-MOF-74. More importantly, EPR studies revealed that sulfate (SO4•−), hydroxyl (·OH), and singlet oxygen (1O2) were the dominant oxidants responsible for PHE degradation. The coexistence of radical and non-radical species was originated from the interaction of FeCo-MOF-74 and PMS. Frontier orbitals and Fukui functions were calculated to reveal the most reactive sites (C10 and C23) in PHE for radical attack. The intermediates and degradation mechanism of PHE were also investigated. This work proposed a new idea for the development of novel bimetallic MOFs that could be potentially used for the catalytic oxidation of refractory organic pollutants.

MIL-53(Fe) derived magnetic CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 composite for catalytic oxidation of sulfamethoxazole via peroxymonsulfate activation

Abstract:Design of metal–organic framework (MOF) derived metal oxides is an effective approach for environmental remediation. The current study describes the fabrication of MIL-53-derived perforated CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 using a facile, one-step, post-thermal solid-state approach by varying Cu/Fe ratios. Herein, the release of CO2 and H2O during the thermal treatment facilitates the incorporation of Cu2+ onto the Fe2O3 structure, forming a perforated hollow CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 composite via an in-situ ion-exchange mechanism. The optimised catalyst CF-0.5 displays a high degradation efficiency for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by heterogeneous activation of peroxymonsulfate (PMS), ascribing to the better textural, morphological, and elemental properties of the novel catalyst. Important reaction parameters such as pH, catalyst loading, PMS dosage, pollutant kind and concentration, and reaction temperature are further optimised to develop a cost-effective catalytic system. The magnetically recoverable catalyst outlines a high stability rate, and only a 9 % efficiency loss is observed even after the fourth cycle. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are identified by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and their roles are determined by performing quenching experiments. In the end, a detailed study of the mineralisation ability and reaction intermediates is performed and possible pathways for the degradation mechanism are proposed. This study not only introduces a facile approach for the fabrication of MOF-driven nanomaterials but provides insights into the removal of emerging contaminants such as SMX.

Abstract:Metal oxides can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade organic contaminants but are usually synthesized via chemical/physical processes involving extreme conditions and hazardous materials. In this study, an innovative bio-synthesis method with a strain of manganese oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas sp. was developed to prepare multiple metal oxides consisting of iron, manganese, and cobalt (Bio-FeMnCoOx) for degrading moxifloxacin (MOX) with PMS. It was found that the cultivation time, the dosage of Co, the polishing method are the key parameters regulating the PMS activation performance of Bio-FeMnCoOx. Under the optimal preparing conditions, the MOX degradation kinetic constant of obtained Bio-FeMnCoOx was 7 times that of the chemically synthesized peer. Analysis with XRD, EPS and SEM with EDS mapping showed an amorphous structure of Bio-FeMnCoOx with well distributed Fe, Mn, and Co. Radical quenching and EPR spin-trapping tests demonstrated that SO4 •- and 1O2 were the main reactive oxygen species. The transformation products of MOX were identified by UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS and the possible degradation pathways were accordingly proposed. The respiratory test showed that the toxicity of MOX was reduced by approximately 69% after the degradation with PMS activated by Bio-FeMnCoOx. The study demonstrates the potential of biogenic metal oxides for efficiently activating PMS.

Abstract:In this work, a three-dimensional cobalt-MOF ([Co 3 (cis-chhc)(H 2 O) 6 ] n , Co-H 6 chhc) (cis-H 6 chhc = 1,2,3,4,5,6-cyclohexane-hexacarboxylic acid) was hydrothermally synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Co-H 6 chhc showed excellent sulfate radical-advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) activation performance toward ATZ removal, in which 100% ATZ was degraded within 30 min due to the recycle of Co 2+ /Co 3+ . The effects of pH, PMS dosage, catalyst dosage, co-existing anions and natural organic matters (NOMs) for ATZ degradation were explored detailly. The reusability, stability and universality experiments were proceeded under optimal condition. It is worth noting that the long-term continuous ATZ degradation was accomplished via a self-developed device.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) have been demonstrated as promising methods for the degradation of contaminants. In this study, the degradation of bisphenol AF (BPAF) by activated PMS via amino-modified metal–organic frameworks (AMOF) was investigated thoroughly. BPAF could be efficiently removed (94.1%) in the optimal condition. The decontamination of BPAF could be accelerated significantly with the increasing temperature, and a highly stable degradation performance was observed at a wide pH range. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests revealed that sulfate radical (SO4 –•), hydroxyl radical (HO•), singlet oxygen (1O2), and superoxide radical (O2 –•) were produced synergistically in the AMOF/PMS system. Chloride ion (Cl–) exhibited a dual influence on BPAF removal, while other anions and NOM could hinder the degradation rate mildly. A total of fifty-two intermediates were identified using UHPLC-MS/MS method and four main degradation pathways were proposed based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculation, including the frontier molecular orbital theory (FMO), natural population analysis (NPA), and Fukui function. Finally, the Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) method for Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST) was applied to estimate the accurate toxicity of BPAF and degradation byproducts. This study exhibited the promising potential for the decontamination of BPAF in the water via the AMOF based AOPs.
