Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials have drawn tremendous attention as activators of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of antibiotics. However, it is still challenging to construct MOF-derived materials with well-dispersed and highly-exposed metal active sites. Herein, the bimetallic Cobalt-Zinc-zeolite imidazolate framework and melamine co-derived double layer nitrogen-doped porous carbon matrix supported highly dispersed cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) (denoted as Co-NC-C) with the exposure of more Co NPs sites was developed by one-step pyrolysis method. The transmission electron microscopy results demonstrate that double layer carbon matrix as a dispersant can effectively inhibit the agglomeration of Co NPs, and Co-NC-C possessed more exposure of Co active sites compared with Co-NC without melamine. Co-NC-C efficiently activated PMS to remove over 96.67% of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at a widespread range of pH within 120 min due to its the highly-exposed Co active sites and high graphitization degree. Additionally, the degradation mechanism dominated by the singlet oxygen was demonstrated. Finally, four products and two probable degradation pathways of SMX were confirmed. Half of the products were less toxic than SMX based on the ecological structure activity relationships analysis results. The study provides valuable insights for the development of MOF-derived catalysts with well-dispersed and highly-exposed metal active sites.

Abstract:This paper proposes an adaptive soft start-up strategy for sensorless control of three-phase BLDC motors in applications to consumer electronics and high efficiency cooling fans. The proposed start-up control scheme combines a closed-loop I/Hz control with adaptive ramping current profile in accordance to different load torque-speed characteristic. The proposed start-up scheme can reduce the start-up current while at the same time provides a robust and smooth start-up for different applications. A synchronous current sampling control scheme based on the dc-link current is developed for the regulation of motor phase current. A start-up current limit profile is calculated based on assumed load torque-speed characteristics. The controller will switch to sensorless control mode once a verified sensorless commutation signal is detected. Simulation and experimental results have been given to show the robustness of the proposed sensorless start-up control scheme.
Effective removal of antibiotics from water by Cu2O/Co3O4-catalyzed peroxymonosulfate oxidation: catalytic performance and degradation mechanism

Abstract:The development of efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated catalysts is important for the degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants. Metal-organic frameworks derived cobalt oxide modified cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 ) with carbon bone were constructed by driving a dual-precursors of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and Cu 2 O, activating PMS for organic degradation. XRD, FT-IR, EDS analyses and XPS were used to demonstrate phase purity while SEM and HR-TEM were used to discover the shape of the synthesised material. EIS, transient current and LSV were used to enquire about the conductivity of the samples and change in current density accordingly. The degradation efficiency of Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 -10 for TC reached 89.8% within 60 min under dark conditions. Its activated degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC), levofloxacin (LEV) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) was 89.4%, 81.32% and 54.09%, respectively. Spherical cuprous oxide loaded on cubic cobalt oxide. Furthermore, the effective activation of PMS was achieved by increasing the electron donor capacity of Co and redox cycling of Cu. The single linear state of oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) produced by Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 is well adapted to H 2 PO 4 − and is active at pH = 7. Notably, Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 utilized hydrogen persulfate (HSO 5 − ) to generate superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and 1 O 2 in the PMS system by Co 3+ /Co 2+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + cyclic conversion. The strong interaction and electron transfer between Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 and PMS and the synergistic effect of the bimetallic oxide redox cycle accelerated improved the catalytic activity. In conclusion, this study provides a new perspective that is conducive to improving the practical application of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs).

Abstract:The catalytic activity of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) derived materials can be enhanced by regulation of the exposed active sites of metal centres. Herein, various MOFs were used as precursors to prepare cobalt-carbon composites (Co@C) by pyrolysis. The resultant Co@C-1 showed the best catalytic activity towards peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by efficient removing 100 % of ciprofloxacin (CIP, 10 mg L −1 ) within 30 min, with a rate constant of 0.240 min −1 . Nonradical pathway via Co(IV) = O species rather than the radical (SO 4 •− and · OH) pathway was the dominant way to remove CIP in the Co@C-1/PMS system. The toxicity of main intermediate products was evaluated and the possible degradation pathways of CIP were proposed, as well as the activation mechanism of PMS activated by Co@C. This study provides a universal way to regulate the exposed active sites of catalysts derived from MOFs, and enhances our comprehension on the PMS activation mechanism by cobalt-based catalysts.

Abstract:The practical application of carbon materials supported cobalt (Co)-based heterogeneous materials as excellent peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators has attracted wide attention in recent years because of their low particle self-agglomeration and low Co leaching. Herein, we developed a new synthetic strategy for designing Co nanoparticles (Co NPs)-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8-derived porous carbon (NC) (denoted as Co-N@NC-x) by calcinating NC with a polydopamine-chelating Co coating. It was demonstrated that NC could effectively prevent Co agglomeration because it provided rich load sites for Co. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the addition of Co could increase the surface defects of NC. Co-N@NC-90 (0.1 g/L) efficiently catalyzed PMS to degrade >96.91 % of sulfamethoxazole (SMX, 20 mg/L) within 90 min with an initial pH of 3.65–9.05 based on the synergistic effect between Co NPs and NC. It was demonstrated that Co NPs were the main active sites, and the defects and carbonyl (CO) group active sites also contributed to SMX degradation by catalyzing PMS. Graphitic N was an adsorption site for SMX. A singlet oxygen (1O2)-dominated non-radical mechanism has been proposed. Additionally, Co-N@NC-90 exhibited excellent stability resulting from NC encapsulation. This work provides a novel approach for the application of metal organic framework-derived carbon-supported metal catalysts in wastewater purification.

Abstract:In this work, new covalent organic framework (COF) materials with high crystallinity and large specific surface areas were used as cobalt-loaded supports. Cobalt nanoparticle-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon porous catalysts () were obtained by high-temperature pyrolysis of the COF materials and cobalt salts. With multiple active sites (Co 0 , pyridine N, and graphitic N), exhibited superior catalytic properties for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation toward the degradation of sulfamerazine (SMZ). The efficiency of SMZ degradation reached 92.4 % within 10 min and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate reached 70.3 % within 30 min. Using radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ), hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were identified in this system, while 1 O 2 was the dominant active species for SMZ removal. The degradation intermediates of SMZ in /PMS were monitored by high performance liquid chromatography–time of flight mass spectrometry (HPLC–TOFMS).

Abstract:The search for immobilization methods is the key to current research on environmentally friendly catalysts. In this study, Fe-Co bimetallic organic framework material was prepared by microwave hydrothermal method. After further carbonization, structural frame self-fixing catalyst Fe/CoC was obtained for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Based on a stable three-dimensional structure, high specific surface area, variable polymetallic ion valence and remarkable catalytic performance, Fe/CoC achieved 99.59 % treatment efficiency and 93.38 % mineralization efficiency of norfloxacin (NOR) within 30 min. The universality was evaluated in multiple antibiotics and actual water configuration solutions. The matching redox potentials and synergistic interactions between the bimetals enhanced the activation catalytic efficiency, which was attributed to the generation of radical SO 4 • − and non-radical 1 O 2 . In addition, the voltammetry characteristic curve proved the existence of direct electron transfer in the system. Finally, a relatively complete NOR degradation pathways were proposed based on the 13 intermediates. This work has enriched the development of stable catalysts for PMS activation and provided a new idea for MOFs to participate in antibiotic removal.

Abstract:The cobalt disulfide/carbon composite CoS 2 @C was successfully synthesized using cobalt metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with different ligands as templates by pyrolysis method. The as-prepared CoS 2 @C were applied as catalysts of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of antibiotics. The CoS 2 @C-3, which was prepared using Co-MOF-74 as self-template, exhibited extraordinarily high activity to PMS, more than 90 % of ciprofloxacin (CIP) was degraded in 10 min with a rate constant of 0.249 min −1 . Furthermore, the CoS 2 @C-3/PMS system demonstrated exceptional resistance to humic acid (HA), significant environmental stability, and a wide range of pH adaptation. The SO 4 •− , · OH, and 1 O 2 induced from heterogeneous and homogeneous activation of PMS were identified as reactive oxygen specieses (ROSs) responsible for oxidation of CIP. In addition, electron transfer and Co(IV) = O also participated in the CIP degradation process. According to the results, a plausible catalytic mechanism for PMS by CoS 2 @C was elucidated, in which S is crucial to the regeneration of ≡Co(II) in situ. Four potential degradation pathways were proposed after the CIP intermediate products were analysed by HPLC-MS. The findings of this study might offer us some insight into how metal sulfides made from MOFs can be effectively used to eliminate contaminants by activating PMS.

Abstract:The reasonable control of the structure of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising strategy for improving their peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation activity. In this study, ZIF-67 @ZIF-8 was used as a template to prepare bimetallic core–shell Co-Fe@NC via Fe doping and high-temperature carbonization. Co-Fe@NC maintained the core–shell structure of the original MOF, in which cobalt was uniformly distributed in the nitrogen-doped graphite carbon skeleton and the surface of the graphite carbon skeleton was covered with iron. With the synergistic effect of the nitrogen-doped graphite carbon skeleton, iron, and cobalt, 100% of tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) was removed in 60 min with k obs = 0.062 min −1 in /PMS system. The addition of iron increased the graphitization degree with I D /I G value increased from 0.98 (Co@NC) to 1.034 () and electron transfer rate of the carbon skeleton. Besides, the Co leaching was effectively attenuated from 1.86 mg/L(Co@NC) to 0.78 mg/L () by the core-shell structure and bimetal strategy. Both O 2 · - and 1 O 2 contributed to the degradation of TBBPS according to quenching experiments. TBBPS was deeply degraded into small-molecule compounds through three degradation pathways by the /PMS system. This study provides a new strategy for designing highly efficient bimetal–carbon composites for environmental remediation.

Abstract:In this study, a coral-like Co-N-doped carbon (Co@NC) was prepared through a simple one-pot synthesis method. The catalyst effectively activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethazine (SMZ) degradation via non-radical pathways, achieving a 100 % removal efficiency of SMZ within 20 min. The Co@NC/PMS system maintained excellent removal capability for SMZ under a broad range of pH (3.0–9.0) and pollutant concentrations (10 mg/L-50 mg/L). Mechanistic studies suggested that the synergistic interaction between Co-Nx sites and graphitic carbon facilitated the generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and high valent cobalt-oxo species (Co(IV) = O), which played dominant roles in the degradation of SMZ. Investigating the effects of different concentrations of anions and humic acid on SMZ degradation, the Co@NC/PMS system demonstrated resistance to interference from common water constituents. Upon examining the degradation capability of the Co@NC/PMS system against different pollutants, the system exhibited selective oxidation towards organic pollutants containing electron-donating moieties, such as hydroxyl and amide groups. This study synthesized a novel Co-N-doped carbon as a highly efficient activator for PMS and conducted an in-depth investigation into the mechanism of SMZ degradation dominated by non-radical pathways.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors for catalysts has drawn growing attentions. In this study, heterojunction Co3O4-CuO doped carbon materials (noted as Co3O4-CuO@CN) were prepared by direct carbonization of CuCo-MOF in air. It was found that the Co3O4-CuO@CN-2 exhibited excellent catalytic activity with the highest Oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation rate of 0.0902 min-1 at 50 mg/L of Co3O4-CuO@CN-2 dosage, 2.0 mM of PMS and 20 mg/L of OTC, which was 4.25 and 4.96 times that of CuO@CN and Co3O4@CN, respectively. Furthermore, Co3O4-CuO@CN-2 was efficient over a wide pH range (pH 1.9-8.4), and possessed good stability and reusability without OTC degradation decrease after five consecutive uses at pH 7.0. In a comprehensive analysis, the rapid regeneration of Cu(II) and Co(II) is responsible for their excellent catalytic performance, and the p-p heterojunction structure formed between Co3O4 and CuO acts as an intermediary of electron transfer to accelerate PMS decomposition. Moreover, it was interesting to find that Cu rather than Co species played a vital role in the PMS activation. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that .OH, SO4•-, and 1O2 were the reactive species responsible for oxidation of OTC and the non-radical pathway triggered by 1O2 was dominant.

Abstract:Three MOF-derived nanoparticles were synthesized by manganese doping and calcination of ZIF-67 precursor. The surface physicochemical properties of these materials were compared using SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR and BET analyses. Among them, cobalt-manganese oxide nanoflowers (CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs) exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) by activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS), achieving 100 % removal within 30 minutes with a rate constant (k obs ) of 0.2960 min −1 . The catalytic mechanism was elucidated by quenching experiments, EPR, electrochemical analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the non-radical oxidation process was initiated mainly by direct electron transfer and 1 O 2 (∼80 %), with a small contribution from the radical SO 4 ·- (∼20 %). The nano-confined structure on the surface of CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs makes it easy to combine with PMS to form CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs/PMS* complexes, which directly capture electrons from CIP to complete the degradation process. The double redox cycle of cobalt-manganese ions and oxygen vacancies on CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs could accelerate the electron transfer process. CoMn 2 O 4 -NFs maintained high removal efficiency (>99 %) over a wide pH range (3−11), with minimal interference from most environmental anions, demonstrating strong stability and interference resistance. This study provides insights into using metal-based materials for oxidative degradation of organic pollutants via non-radical pathways.

Abstract:Co3O4 NPs in N-doped porous carbon (Co3O4 NPs@N-PC) materials were prepared by one-pot pyrolysis of a ZIF-67 powder under N2 atmosphere and followed by oxidation under air atmosphere (200 °C) toward promotion catalytic activity and activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degradation sulfamethoxazole (SMZ). 2-methylimidazole was used as a nitrogen source and a competitive ligand for the synthesis of Co3O4 NPs@N-PC, which in addition to affecting nucleation and growth of the crystal, promotes the production of active Co-N sites. Co3O4 NPs@N-PC nano-architecture has high specific surface areas (250 m2 g-1) and is a non-toxic, effective and stable PMS activator. The effect of operating parameters including SMZ concentration, catalyst dosage, temperature and pH in the presence of Co3O4 NPs@N-PC was investigated. The Co3O4 NPs@N-PC composite showed superior performance in activating PMS over a wide range of pH (2-10) and different temperatures so that complete degradation of SMZ (50 μM, 100 mL) was achieved within 15 min. The role of Co2+/Co3+ redox system in the mechanism before and after PMS activation was determined using XPS analysis. Surface-generated radicals led to the degradation of SMZ, in which the SMZ degradation rate attained 0.21 min-1 with the mineralization of 36.8%. The feasible degradation mechanism of SMZ was studied in the presence of different scavengers and it was revealed that the degradation reaction proceeds from the radical/non-radical pathway and in this process most of the SO4- and OH radicals are dominant. The recoverability and reuse of Co3O4 NPs@N-PC were evaluated to confirm its stability and potential for SMZ degradation and it was observed that the catalyst maintains its catalytic power for at least 5 cycles.

Abstract:The integration of metal nanoparticles into carbon materials has catch considerable attention. In this study, we have successfully fabricated the N-doped porous carbon encapsulated magnetic Co nanoparticles () through a two-step pyrosis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67). The obtained exhibited excellent stability in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) towards tetracycline (TC) degradation without obvious Co leaching and magnetically separable. The removal efficiency reached up to 90.1% within 3 min and 74.7% of total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency could be obtained in 30 min towards TC by /PMS system. Mechanism explorations revealed the encapsulated Co nanoparticles in the porous N-doped carbon promoted the catalytic activity and stability. The two-pathway mechanism study indicated that radical and non-radical oxidations acted together in TC degradation. Moreover, some potential factors, including PMS dosage, TC concentration, solution pH value, anion/organic matters and temperature were investigated. The /PMS system exhibited high efficiency in removal of various antibiotics (oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline and deoxytetracycline). Even in actual water bodies (tap water, river water and pharmaceutical wastewater), the /PMS system displayed excellent performance. This study proposed a design of metal nanoparticles under confinement for fabricating highly active catalysts towards PMS activation.

This study explores the use of cobalt-based MOF (CoMOF) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to remove tetracycline (TC) from water resources. Under optimal conditions, the given catalytic system could achieve a TC removal of 83.3%. Radical quenching tests and EPR analysis revealed that SO4•-, HO•, •O2-, and 1O2 could participate in the catalytic degradation, but the discernable removal mechanism was mainly ascribed to the nonradical pathway induced by 1O2. At only 5 mg/L of CoMOF, the performance of the catalytic system was superior to that of PMS alone for different types of micropollutants. The CoMOF/PMS system could also reliably deal with typical anions in water, such as Cl-, SO42-, HCO3-, and PO43-. The MOF catalyst could last for four cycles with a minor decrease in reactivity of ∼ 30%. However, the removal performance decreased markedly when aromatic natural organic matter (NOM) were present in the water bodies, and the effectiveness was lower in alkaline or acidic environments. Our work offers insights into the catalytic degradation of CoMOF/PMS applied in contaminated water remediation and serves as a baseline for fabricating an efficient MOF with enhanced catalytic performance and stability.
Peroxymonosulfate Activation by Fe-Co-O-Codoped Graphite Carbon Nitride for Degradation of Sulfamethoxazole

Abstract:Graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has a stable structure but poor catalytic capability for activating peroxymono-sulfate (PMS). In this study, the codoping of g-C3N4 with bimetallic oxides (iron and cobalt) and oxygen was investigated to enhance its catalytic capability. The results showed that iron, cobalt, and oxygen codoped g-C3N4 (Fe-Co-O-g-C3N4) was successfully prepared, which was capable of completely degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX) (0.04 mM) within 30 min, with a reaction rate of 0.085 min(-1), indicating the superior catalytic activity of Fe-Co-O-g-C3N4. The mineralization efficiency of SMX was 22.1%. Sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen were detected during the process of PMS activation. However, the role that singlet oxygen played in degrading SMX was not obvious. Surface-bound reactive species and sulfate radicals were responsible for SMX degradation, in which sulfate radicals contributed to 46.6% of SMX degradation. The superior catalytic activity was due to the synergistic effect of metal oxides and O-g-C3N4 , in which O-g-C3N4 could act as a carrier and an activator as well as an electron mediator to promote the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and Co(III) to Co(II). Four main steps of SMX degradation were proposed, including direct oxidation of SMX, bond fission of N-C, bond fission of N-S, and bond fission of S-C. The effect of the pH, temperature, PMS concentration, chloridion, bicarbonate, and humic acids on SMX degradation was investigated. Cycling experiments demonstrated the good stability of Fe-Co-O-g-C3N4. This study first reported the preparation of bimetallic oxide and oxygen codoped g-C3N4, which was an effective PMS activator for degradation of toxic organic pollutants.

Abstract:Singlet oxygen-based advanced oxidation processes ( 1 O 2 -AOPs) have attracted extensive interest in selective removal of organic pollutants in the complicated water matrices. However, both the highly efficient 1 O 2 production and selective pollutants oxidation degradation are challenging. In this work, a 2D Co-MOF (Co-tib) was synthesized and applied to accomplish nearly 100% 1 O 2 production during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, which exhibited excellent selective catalytic oxidation performance toward multiple organic pollutants. More importantly, >99% selective removal efficiencies for rhodamine B (RhB), bisphenol A (BPA) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) are achieved in the mixed RhB/BPA/SMX/Benzoic acid (BA) solutions, and >90% selective removal efficiencies for RhB, BPA and SMX are achieved in the mixed RhB/BPA/SMX/P-nitrobenzoic acid (NBA) solutions. The influences of PMS dosage, pH, pollutant concentrations and inorganic ions for pollutants degradation were investigated. The reaction mechanisms were proposed via active species quenching tests, probe experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR). This work will provide new inspiration for 1 O 2 production and selective degradation toward multiple pollutants in a complicated aqueous matrix via the catalytic PMS activation over MOFs catalysts.

Abstract:In recent years, photothermal-assisted Fenton-like degradation of organic pollutants has become a prominent green method in environmental pollution control. Nevertheless, the design of suitable catalysts remains a significant challenge for this approach. Herein, zeolite-imidazolate framework-derived CoMn bimetallic nanoparticles embedded in hollow carbon nanofibers (CoMnHCF) have been developed as a photothermal nano-confinement reactor with multiple active sites to enhance reaction performance and promote peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Under light irradiation, the local temperature within the porous spaces of CoMnHCF was significantly higher than the liquid temperature. The confined space concentrated heat, minimized thermal loss, and effectively utilizes this feature to activate PMS for antibiotic degradation. The results demonstrated that this system efficiently degraded various antibiotics, including tetracycline hydrochloride, levofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, norfloxacin and chlorotetracycline. Photothermal contribution analysis revealed that thermal effects predominate in this system. Further DFT simulations explored the coordination environment of metal elements and the properties of related pollutants, predicting potential structures and reaction sites. A series of water quality experiments and cyclic tests demonstrated the system's significant application potential. This study offered new insights into advancing the integrated use of photothermal conversion and nano-confinement reactor activation of PMS in sewage purification.

Abstract:Heterogeneous activation of peroxomonosulfate (PMS) has been extensively studied for the degradation of antibiotics. The cobalt ferrite spinel exhibits good activity in the PMS activation, but suffers from the disadvantage of low PMS utilization efficiency. Herein, the nanocomposites including FeS, CoS 2 , CoFe 2 O 4 and Fe 2 O 3 were synthesized by hydrothermal method and used for the first time to activate PMS for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The nanocomposites showed superior catalytic activity in which the SMX could be completely removed at 40 min, 0.1 g L −1 nanocomposites and 0.4 mM PMS with the first order kinetic constant of 0.2739 min −1 . The PMS utilization efficiency was increased by 29.4% compared to CoFe 2 O 4 . Both radicals and non-radicals contributed to the SMX degradation in which high-valent metal oxo dominated. The mechanism analysis indicated that sulfur modification, on one hand, enhanced the adsorption of nanocomposites for PMS, and promoted the redox cycles of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Co 2+ /Co 3+ on the other hand. This study provides new way to enhance the catalytic activity and PMS utilization efficiency of spinel cobalt ferrite.
