Abstract:We propose a hierarchical multiscale modeling approach to simulate the hydro-mechanical coupling behavior in saturated high-porosity sandstone, with a particular focus on the occurrence and transition of compaction bands. In this multiscale approach, we use the finite element method (FEM) to solve the global boundary value problem for a sandstone, and the discrete element method (DEM) to solve the local representative volume elements (RVEs) embedded at the Gauss integration points of the FE mesh to provide the effective material constitutive responses required for FEM. The global governing equations for a coupled hydro-mechanical problem are solved with the standard u–p formulation, where the total stress is decomposed into the pore pressure and the effective stress which is directly derivable from the DEM solution of the RVEs, according to the seminal Terzaghi's effective stress principle. By choosing proper RVEs to represent the typical microstructure of high-porosity sandstone, we perform both drained and undrained simulations on saturated sandstone specimens to examine localized compactive failures developed therein. We identify that both mean effective stress and porosity control critically the initiation and development of failure modes in sandstone. Under undrained shear, our simulations show that a sandstone specimen may first develop a compaction band followed by a gradual transition to a shear-enhanced compaction band and even shear band, with the build-up of excessive pore pressure and hence drop of mean effective stress. In the specimen, regions experiencing localized volumetric contraction show relatively higher pore pressure than other regions and act as the source of flux flow. The Darcy flux peaks during the formation of compaction band and decreases gradually in the following stages. To distinguish the different failure stages with distinct physical attributes, the ratio of deviatoric strain to volumetric strain is adopted as a useful indicator signifying the underlying microstructural mechanisms for different deformation bands. This study signifies the importance of considering pore pressure and mean effective stress in fluid-involved engineering operations, e.g. aquifer management, hydrocarbon extraction and CO2 geological sequestration.

Abstract:Combining the digital speckle correlation method (DSCM) with the finite element model updating (FEMU) method, a new inversion method of non-uniform distribution of rock material parameters is proposed to study the characteristics of non-uniform distribution of rock material parameters and its evolution with the loading process. The non-uniform displacement field of the specimen during experimental loading is calculated based on DSCM. Based on FEMU, the experimental loading process is simulated in finite element software ABAQUS. Under the initial conditions, different material parameters (elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio) are given for each element according to Weibull distribution to calculate the non-uniform displacement field. The objective function is constructed by the difference between the experimental displacement field and the finite element simulation displacement field. The objective function is optimized and iterated by the genetic algorithm (GA) and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to calculate the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of the experimental specimen. The inversion method for non-uniform distribution of rock materials is applied to the uniaxial compression experiment of sandstone, and the non-uniform distribution of elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio under different loading states is obtained. The inversion method for non-uniform distribution of rock material parameters proposed in this paper provides a basis for complex experiments or structural system parameter inversion.

Abstract:Laminated rocks, which are composed of two types of laminae (referred to as ‘strong lamina’ (SL) and ‘weak lamina’ (WL)), are prevalent in rock engineering construction. Determining their mechanical parameters is crucial, yet obtaining them separately through conventional physical experiments is challenging. While specialized techniques like Nano-indentation testing can be employed, they are often costly (Li et al., Mar Pet Geol 143:105740, 2022), and the relationship between these test results and macroscopic mechanical properties remains uncertain. In this study, a method for estimating the mechanical parameters of SL and WL based on uniaxial tests is proposed. The elastic moduli and Poisson ratios for both materials are derived first, followed by equations estimating their compression and tensile strengths. The internal friction angles and cohesive forces are obtained through correlations of rock mechanics parameters. Two numerical simulations were conducted and compared to physical tests, and the comparison results show that the proposed method is validated. A necessary evaluation method and suggestions for further parameter adjustments are provided. Overall, this method offers significant guidance for engineering projects involving laminated rocks and is worth popularizing.

Abstract:This paper presents the hydro-mechanical behaviors of a red sandstone from the Three Gorges reservoir area using laboratory testing and numerical modelling. A series of laboratory triaxial compression tests were performed on the red sandstone to understand the effect of confining stress and seepage pressure on the rock mechanical properties and permeability. The laboratory results show that the initial elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio and peak strength of the red sandstone increase with confining stress, and decrease with the increase in seepage pressure. The change in the permeability of the red sandstone is slight during the initial and elastic deformation stages, but increases rapidly when approaching to the peak stress. Micromechanical insights on the sandstone's hydro-mechanical behaviors were unveiled by implementing an improved pipe network flow model in the discrete element method. The improved pipe network model can well capture the stress–strain response and the permeability changes of the red sandstone that were consistent with the laboratory test results. The numerical results reveal that the distribution of flow rate, pore pressure, and force chains in rock is closely related to microcracking, and the permeability increases accordingly with the increase in the number of microcracks and their coalescence. The number of microcracks and the rock fracture angle with respect to the axial axis at peak stress increase with the effective confining stress. The damage process of the red sandstone during the hydro-mechanical loading is divided into three distinct stages based on the mechanical response and permeability evolution.

Abstract:Energy evolution process of rock deformation is conducive to essentially reveal the rock failure mechanism and is of great significance to uncover the breeding of dynamic disasters in rock engineering. To characterize the damage evolution of energy dissipation during rock failure, the digital image correlation (DIC) technique is proposed to describe the rock failure mechanics and its energy evolution process. The uniaxial compression experiment of sandstone specimen was carried out, and the whole field deformation and failure characteristics of the rock had been captured by the DIC system. Measurement accuracy was verified by the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor, the elastic region of the specimen was divided according to the location of strain localization band (SLB), and the evolution process of elastic strain energy of the rock was analyzed. The results show that the time history development of rock strain obtained by the FBG and DIC system matches identically, and the deviation of peak axial strain of both means is less than 5%, which verifies the applicability of DIC system. The uncoordinated evolution of rock deformation displacement field is discussed to reveal the crack development and failure form of the sandstone specimen under uniaxial compression. The energy evolution of the elastic region of the specimen is revealed, and the development of releasable elastic strain energy would be divided into three stages, which correspond to the stress–strain characteristics of rock failure mechanics. This study could provide an alternative analytical method for the experimental rock mechanics research studies.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of geomaterials are greatly affected by their heterogeneity. As a special complex rock medium, the mechanical response of red bed soft rock is of considerable importance in stability analyses and the protection of slopes. In this study, X-ray micro-computerized tomography (micro-CT) was used to obtain the spatial distribution of minerals in red bed soft rock. An image processing procedure was proposed to incorporate the extracted mesoscopic mineral and crack distribution into the model of the grain-based finite-discrete element method (GB-FDEM). Subsequently, a uniaxial compression test and Brazilian disc splitting test were performed to obtain the mechanical response and failure modes of mudstone. The microscopic fracture morphology and traces of intragranular and intergranular cracks under tensile and shear stress were analyzed in detail. The numerical results show that the GB-FDEM model successfully characterized the mechanical response, which was similar to that of the laboratory tests and the traditional homogeneous models. The presence of minerals and pre-existing cracks disturbed the stress distribution in the heterogeneous model, which resulted in a difference in local stress that reasonably explained the phenomenon of local fragmentation. The simulated macroscopic failure mode of the heterogeneous models was most consistent with the results of the laboratory tests. The systematic framework proposed in this study provides a powerful tool for further understanding the multiscale (micro, meso, and macro) failure mechanism of red bed soft rock and predicting a realistic fracture process while reducing the tedious and redundant laboratory tests.

In order to study the effects of crack inclination angle and loading rate on rock mechanical properties, creep characteristics, and failure characteristics. Taking homogeneous red sandstone with different fracture angles as the research object, uniaxial compression tests and uniaxial compression creep tests were conducted at different loading rates. The results showed that under the same fracture angle, the loading rate was positively correlated with the peak strength, elastic modulus, instantaneous strain, creep strain, and steady-state creep rate of the sample, while negatively correlated with the peak strain. At the same loading rate, the mechanical properties and creep properties of the sample were controlled by the crack inclination angle α. With the increase of α, the peak strength, peak strain, instantaneous strain, creep strain and steady-state creep rate decreased first and then increased, and the elastic modulus increased. On the basis of rock creep testing, it is also important to establish a creep model that conforms to the actual test situation for studying rock creep characteristics. However, many models currently used cannot accurately describe the three stages of rock creep, especially the accelerated creep stage. Therefore, based on Burgers elements, this paper introduces plastic damage bodies based on damage rates and software components based on fractional calculus, A new creep model was obtained and its rationality was verified through experimental results. The results showed that the fit between the model and experimental data was above 0.97, indicating that the model can better describe the three stages of rock creep, especially reflecting the non-linear characteristics of the accelerated creep stage.

Abstract:The freezing method is an effective approach for constructing coal mine shafts through water-rich soft rock strata. The frozen wall produced by this technique stops the movement of water and offers temporary support, ensuring the safety and stability of the shaft working face. However, most frozen rock masses generally comprise ice-filled flaws and frozen intact rock. A frozen fissured rock mass undergoing the long-term effects of excavation unloading under in situ stress gradually accumulates damage or creep deformation over time; this damage is mainly responsible for the significant deformation, cracking and even instability of the frozen rock wall. To study the creep characteristics of ice-filled fissured rock masses under unloading conditions, a series of conventional triaxial compression tests and triaxial unloading creep tests were performed on ice-filled flawed red sandstone specimens from the Shilawusu mine in Northwest China using a self-developed DRTS-500 subzero rock triaxial testing system. In conjunction with the experimental data, the instantaneous strength and deformation characteristics of the rock specimens were analyzed, and their creep deformation characteristics and damage evolution characteristics were discussed. In this paper, based on the nonlinear creep characteristics of frozen rock, fractional calculus theory and damage theory, a new nonlinear creep damage model of frozen fissured red sandstone was defined in series with the improved Burgers model and elastoplastic damage model. The proposed creep model can reasonably describe the creep deformation of frozen fissured red sandstone. Classical elastoplastic mechanics and creep theory were used to derive the three-dimensional creep damage constitutive equation, and the results of creep experiments and simulation results of the creep damage constitutive model were very consistent in this study. The new creep model not only reflects the whole creep deformation process of frozen fissured red sandstone but also exhibits better performance than the classical Burger model and improved Nishihara model in describing the primary creep stage and accelerating creep stage. Therefore, the proposed nonlinear creep damage model is suitable for studying the mechanical creep properties of frozen fissured rock under unloading conditions. The results can provide an important reference for the long-term stability assessment of frozen rock walls of coal mine shafts.

Experimental Investigation and Micromechanical Modeling of Elastoplastic Damage Behavior of Sandstone

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of the sandstone at the dam site is important to the stability of the hydropower station to be built in Southwest China. A series of triaxial compression tests under different confining pressures were conducted in the laboratory. The critical stresses were determined and the relationship between the critical stress and confining pressure were analyzed. The Young’s modulus increases non-linearly with the confining pressure while the plastic strain increment Nφ and the dilation angle φ showed a negative response. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests showed that the failure of the sandstone under compression is a coupled process of crack growth and frictional sliding. Based on the experimental results, a coupled elastoplastic damage model was proposed within the irreversible thermodynamic framework. The plastic deformation and damage evolution were described by using the micromechanical homogenization method. The plastic flow is inherently driven by the damage evolution. Furthermore, a numerical integration algorithm was developed to simulate the coupled elastoplastic damage behavior of sandstone. The main inelastic properties of the sandstone were well captured. The model will be implemented into the finite element method (FEM) to estimate the excavation damaged zones (EDZs) which can provide a reference for the design and construction of such a huge hydropower project.

Abstract:The red sandstone of Xiaopu 3# branch Cave in the Yuxi section of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project was taken as the research object. The uniaxial compression strength and point load strength test are conducted from the perspectives of vertical and parallel stratifications, respectively, and then the anisotropy of red sandstone was analyzed in detail. The data obtained from the field and laboratory test was analyzed, and the conversion relationship between point load strength index and uniaxial compression strength is a power function under both parallel stratification and vertical stratification. The study results showed that: The mechanical properties of red sandstone have obvious anisotropy. The difference in its mechanical properties is particularly evident in UCS and point load tests and Is(50) and UCS under vertical stratification are significantly greater than Is(50) under parallel stratification. The point load strength correction index m of red sandstone is m = 0.4096 under parallel stratification, and m = 0.4408 under vertical stratification.

Abstract:In this study, mechanical behavior of sandstone is investigated through laboratory triaxial loading tests under various confining pressures (5, 15, and 20 MPa) and pore gas pressure (0, 1, and 2 MPa). Rock strength and its failure mode are compared and analyzed on the basis of the experimental results. It is seen that the pore gas pressure induced the diminution of compression peak strength, cohesion (5.3–9.1%), and friction angle (4.6–9.7%) and led to local brittle failure at both ends of the rock. With the increase of the confining pressure, the brittle–ductile transition of the mechanical behavior took place; meanwhile, significant plastic deformation and volumetric dilatation are noticed. It is indicated that the failure and nonlinear mechanical behavior of red sandstone are essentially related to the coupling effect between the damage and plastic deformation. Accordingly, a coupled elastoplastic damage model for the sandstone under different drainage conditions is proposed along with a non-associated plastic potential function. The coupling between the damage and plastic deformation is established by introducing the independent damage variable in the plastic yield criterion. The results show that the model is capable to describe the main features of the mechanical behaviors of the sandstone. The strength, deformation characteristics, and the pre-peak plastic hardening characteristic are in good agreement with the experimental descriptions.

Abstract:The advance speed of the working face in coal mines can significantly affect the fluctuation frequency of abutment pressure in front of the coal body. Moreover, it has a certain correlation with the change of axial loading rate in coal and rock mechanics test. Therefore, uniaxial compression tests under various loading rates of 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.25, 0.5 MPa/s were conducted using 2000 kN triaxial testing machine and PCI-2 acoustic emission test system to study the loading rate effect on the mechanical properties of deep sandstones. The results show that 1) the peak strength and elastic modulus of the deep sandstone increase with the loading rate increasing; 2) with the loading rate increasing, the deep sandstone transforms from plastic-elastic-plastic to plastic-elastic and moreover, the failure mode gradually transfers from type I to type III; 3) With the loading rate increasing, the total input strain energy, elastic strain energy, and dissipated strain energy generally increase; 4) the damage variable presents the evolution characteristics of inverted "S" shape with time, and with the loading rate increasing, the damage degree of the deep sandstone is aggravated. The conclusion obtained can provide the theoretical basis for the stability control of the surrounding rock in deep engineering.

Abstract:Sandstone is a kind of bedded rock mass commonly used in engineering. The deformation and strength of bedded sandstone impose some problems during excavation. In this study, triaxial unloading tests were conducted on rock specimens (considering seven different bedding angles ( β )). The results revealed the following key points: (1) At a constant confining pressure, the elastic modulus was gradually increasing when the bedding angle increased. Furthermore, after initial decreasing, the deformation modulus was increased and had a U-shaped distribution. (2) During the unloading of the axial compression, the rate of axial strain variations was initially increased and then decreased while the bedding angle increased (it has exhibited an inverted U-shaped distribution). However, the peak strength, cohesion, and angle of internal friction of rock specimens showed an initial decreasing and then increasing trend. (3) During the loading and unloading stages, the confining pressure reduces the anisotropy of bedded rock masses. (4) In the triaxial unloading test, the failure of rock specimens can be classified into four modes. When there was a large intersection angle between the bedding plane and the unloading direction, failure developed at the bedding planes.

Abstract:In response to the challenges posed by long-term cyclic loading and unloading in underground rock engineering, this study systematically investigates the macro- and meso-mechanical response mechanisms of fractured rock masses under cyclic loading conditions. We performed graded cyclic loading–unloading tests on parallel double-fractured sandstone samples with varying spatial distribution configurations. These tests were integrated with digital image correlation (DIC) technology, fractal dimension analysis, and discrete element method (DEM) numerical simulations to analyze the mechanical properties, deformation characteristics, crack propagation features, and meso-fracture mechanisms of the fractured rock masses. The findings indicate that the diverse spatial distribution characteristics of the double fractures exert a significant influence on the loading–unloading processes, surface deformation fields, and fracture states of the rock. Cyclic loading leads to an increase in the fractal dimension of the fractured samples, resulting in more intricate and chaotic crack propagation patterns. Furthermore, DEM simulations reveal the impact of fracture spatial configurations on the force chain distribution within the rock bridges. The equivalent stress nephogram effectively represents the stress field distribution. This offers valuable insights for predicting meso-fracture trends in rocks. This paper comprehensively integrates both experimental and numerical simulation methodologies to deliver a thorough analysis of the complex mechanical behavior of fractured rock masses under cyclic loading conditions, with direct relevance to engineering applications such as mine excavation and slope stabilization.

Abstract:Infrared radiation thermal imaging technology is proposed for rock mechanics tests. Through the infrared radiation temperature and stress–strain curves of sandstone with different porosity during the process of uniaxial compression loading obtained by an infrared camera and uniaxial compression testing machine, the characteristics of infrared radiation on sandstone are systematically analyzed during uniaxial compression loading. The results show that: (1) The strength of sandstone decreases with the increase of porosity, the infrared thermography of sandstone has obvious characteristics of stage evolution and is closely related to the deformation and failure stage of rock in the process of uniaxial compression; (2) During the rock failure process, infrared thermography is differentiated, and the high-temperature radiation zone can reflect the location, size and shape of rock fractures; (3) During the uniaxial compression loading process, the evolution law of the average infrared radiation temperature (AIRT) is closely related to the porosity and uniaxial compressive of the rock, and it is possible to invert all processes of rock failure. The research results demonstrate that the technique of infrared thermal imaging can be applied to rock mechanics tests, and the evolution law of the infrared radiation characteristics can provide a reference for stability analysis of the underground rock engineering.

Abstract:The failure of weakly filled rock masses is an important factor in the safety and stability of rock engineering. To investigate the spatial fracture behaviour of red sandstone with non-unitary geometric weakly filled joints , uniaxial compression experiments were carried out. The 3D DIC and acoustic emission (AE) technology were used to obtain the three-dimensional spatial deformation information and AE parameters of specimens containing both planar and circular weak inclusions, respectively. The main results are as follows: (1) The results show that the ductility of planar weak inclusions has a certain deterioration effect on the bearing capacity of the specimens, and the extent of this deterioration effect is not constant. (2) When the ductile length of the planar weak inclusions increases, the three-dimensional spatial displacement and strain fields of the specimens are divided by the planar weak inclusions, showing different degrees of deformation behaviour and different distribution patterns in the upper and lower parts. (3) The three-dimensional spatial fracture characteristics of specimens with different ductile lengths of planar weak inclusions will be dominated by the ductility, and the main failure mode of the specimen will gradually evolve from shear failure to splitting failure. The "guiding effect" of circular hole weak inclusions on the main crack is no longer evident when the ductility of planar weak inclusions is at its maximum. (4) The growth trend of the cumulative AE counts can be divided into four stages, and the stage characteristics are significantly influenced by the ductile length of the planar weak inclusions; different failure modes show different AE signal distribution characteristics. In addition, the key points of stability control of rock masses containing weak inclusions in practical engineering are discussed.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to study the mechanical properties and permeability evolution of sandstone by triaxial compression tests under different confining and seepage pressures. In addition, a permeability evolutionary early warning model for the sandstone failure process under hydromechanical coupling is proposed. The results are helpful for understanding the influence of in‐situ stress and seepage pressure on deep sandstone and the permeability evolutionary mechanism, and can be applied to the early warning of water inrush disasters in deep underground structures In situ stress and groundwater have important effects on the deformation and stability of deep underground rock masses. Therefore, it is extremely important to study the mechanical properties and permeability evolutionary processes of rocks under hydromechanical (HM) coupling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties and permeability evolution of sandstone using triaxial compression tests under different confining and seepage pressures. The test results show that the confining pressure can increase the strength of sandstone, whereas the seepage pressure has the opposite effect. The initial and maximum permeabilities were positively correlated with seepage pressure and negatively correlated with confining pressure. The confining and seepage pressures had little effect on the change in initial permeability. As a common parameter of acoustic emission (AE), cumulative AE counts can intuitively reflect the permeability evolutionary process in the sandstone failure process. A permeability evolutionary early warning model for the sandstone failure process under HM coupling is proposed. The results are helpful for understanding the influence of in situ stress and seepage pressure on deep sandstone and the permeability evolutionary mechanism, and they can be used to provide early warning of water inrush disasters in deep underground structures.

Abstract:It is of great significance to evaluate the stress state and mechanical properties of deep rock engineering, by inverting the real-time porosity of rocks. In this study, the triaxial compression tests and real-time ultrasonic velocity tests were conducted on siltstone under different confining pressures. Firstly, a nonlinear model for the evolution of rock ultrasonic velocity with axial strain was proposed, based on the characteristic that the ultrasonic velocity rapidly increases and tends to stabilize. Secondly, a correction coefficient for the ultrasonic velocity of the rock matrix was proposed and the Raymer model was modified. The real-time porosity during triaxial compression of rocks was inverted according to the modified Raymer model and the ultrasonic velocity model. Subsequently, the effective compression coefficient of rocks was calculated based on real-time porosity, and a compaction coefficient was established to describe the compaction effect of cracks and pores. Finally, a new compressive-damage coupled constitutive model for rocks was established, by combining the statistical damage theory and compaction effect.

Abstract:Porous rocks exhibit mechanical behaviors characterized by high compressibility and stiffness enhancement under quasi-static cyclic loads. In this study, we investigated the mechanical responses of a porous red sandstone subjected to different cyclic loads and revealed the mesoscopic mechanisms for the evolution of stiffness and strength. Rock stiffness was enhanced by increasing stress and number of load cycles during pre-peak loading, and the normalized viscoelastic strain evolved uniformly during all the unloading phases. Void compaction and microfracturing caused irreversible structural changes and subsequent changes in the stiffness of the rock, and there was a positive linear relationship between the unloading secant modulus and axial irreversible strain. In addition, a new parameter, named the plastic strain increment ratio , was defined to describe the asynchronous development of the axial and lateral irreversible deformation induced by void compaction and microfracturing. These results can provide a better understanding of the mechanical properties of porous sandstone.

Abstract:The study of sandstone dilation characteristics under actual mining and excavation conditions promotes the safe and efficient development of underground engineering. Accordingly, this study employs true-triaxial testing to reveal the influence of intermediate principal stress and unloading action in the minimum principal stress directions on rock dilation. In the stress–strain analysis, with increasing intermediate principal stress, the maximum compression of the sandstone volume in the loading and unloading tests increases, while the onset of dilation is delayed under loading conditions and initially delayed and then accelerated under unloading conditions. The energy storage limit of sandstone under the unloading test tends to decrease with increasing intermediate principal stress, contrary to the results of the loading test, and the characteristic point at which the percentage of dissipative energy is greater than that of elastic energy occurs earlier. The energy of sandstone in the unloading test in the intermediate principal stress direction was smaller than that in the minimum principal stress direction, while the loading test showed the opposite trend. Combining these two analyses can elucidate the restraining effect and tensile stress effect of the intermediate principal stress, as well as the weakening and strengthening effects of the unloading action on the two effects. By further combining the average elastic energy and dissipative energy conversion rate under different test conditions, the weakening effect was manifested by shortening the compressive deformation course, and the strengthening effect was manifested by developing the degree of plastic expansion deformation. This study provides important guidance for deep mining projects.
