Abstract:A novel reactive electrochemical ceramic membrane (RECM), assembled by ceramic membrane and reduced TiO2 nanotube arrays (rTNA) based PbO2 membrane anode with a Sb-SnO2 interlayer (rTNA/Sb-SnO2/PbO2), was developed in this study with the dual functions of low-pressure membrane filtration and efficient removal of antibiotics from wastewater. Compared with Ti/Sb-SnO2 and rTNA/Sb-SnO2 membrane anodes, rTNA/Sb-SnO2/ PbO2 anode exhibited higher oxygen evolution potential, larger active surface area and promising electrochemical stability, owing to the introduction of rTNA structure and PbO2 layer. The rTNA/Sb-SnO2/PbO2 RECM also achieved a higher electrochemical degradation performance than Ti/Sb-SnO2 and rTNA/Sb-SnO2 RECMs, as well as a lower energy consumption. The antibiotic enrofloxacin (ENR) removal of the rTNA/Sb-SnO2/PbO2 RECM in the flow-through mode was 5.4 times higher than that in the flow-by mode. These results were ascribed to the improved mass transfer of ENR towards anode surface and reactive oxygen species (i.e., H2O2, O2 center dot-, and center dot OH) production. According to theoretical computations and the detection results of intermediates, the degradation pathway involved the defluorination, hydroxylation, decarboxylation, and breakage of quinolone and/or piperazine rings of ENR under the attack of hydroxyl radicals in the RECM system. The findings demonstrated the application potential of the rTNA/Sb-SnO2/PbO2 RECM in removing ENR from wastewater.

Abstract:The oxidative degradation of an antibiotic, Ofloxacin (OFX), has been investigated using the electro-Fenton (EF) process with a constant current between 100 and 500 mA and a carbon-felt cathode. The kinetics of oxidative degradation and the efficiency of mineralization were examined about the applied current and catalyst (Fe 2+ ) concentration. The absolute rate constant for the oxidation of OFX by hydroxyl radical was determined using the competition kinetic approach as 3.04 ± 0.19 × 10 9 M –1 s –1 . For efficient degradation of OFX at the relevant operating conditions, the ideal current value is 400 mA at a concentration of the catalyst (Fe 2+ ) at 0.10 mM. After 6 h of electrolysis, in the present study, it is demonstrated that several cathodes, including carbon felt (CF), carbon-graphite (CG) and stainless steel (SS), had an impact on the electrochemical oxidation of the organic contaminant, OFX. A high level of mineralization (>97%) was attained. The development of F − , and ions was also monitored and their evolution during their release into the medium was discussed. Several intermediate products were identified using LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) and HPLC (High-performance liquid chromatography) analyses. Based on the identity of these products, a feasible route for the mineralization process is proposed. Finally, biodegradability was studied and the results indicated the following ratio of biological oxygen demand within 5 days to chemical oxygen demand BOD 5 /COD through OFX mineralization by EF treatment for the possibility of evaluating the combination of electro-Fenton and biological treatment.

Abstract:Ofloxacin (OFL) is a non-biodegradable novel organic pollutant in the environment. In this study, a novel reusable porous gel microsphere (RPGM) of sodium alginate-coated biochar with nano-zero-valent iron was prepared to activate persulfate (PDS) to remove OFL in water. The degradation process was fitted to the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, and the findings revealed that the rate of OFL removal in the RPGM/PDS system amounted to 96.91 % within 60 min utilizing 0.4 g/L RPGM and 5 mM PDS. On OFL removal, the effect of reaction conditions, including OFL concentration, RPGM dosage, initial pH, temperature, and inorganic anions was discussed. RPGM exhibited excellent stability in removing OFL, it could be recycled to activate persulfate, and the removal rate of OFL was maintained at 99.73 ∼ 78.61 % within 6 cycles. The free radical quench showed the pivotal role that SO4·− and HO· performed in the degradation of OFL. By using UPLC-QTOF-MS, the intermediate degradation products of OFL were examined, and the possible degradation pathway was proposed. Furthermore, the T.E.S.T. was used to project the toxicity of OFL and the intermediate degradation products. In summary, OFL can be degraded effectively and reproducibly using RPGM-activated PDS.

Abstract:Ofloxacin (OFL) may cause potential ecological risks since it cannot be effectively removed by conventional biological degradation. The advanced oxidation process is an efficient approach for antibiotic removal. Herein, a heterogeneous system for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) activation by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) supported on powdered activated carbon (PAC) composite (nZVI@PAC) was proposed to proceed with the removal of OFL. Typically, OFL (25 mg/L) can be removed up to 94.7 % within 60 min ([H2O2] = 10 mM, [nZVI@PAC] = 125 mg/L, pH = 6, T = 318 K). The effects of initial OFL concentration, pH, nZVI@PAC dosage, H2O2 concentration, and different actual water matrices were examined to explore the application conditions and resistance of the nZVI@PAC/H2O2 system. Meanwhile, the quenching experiment, PMSO probe experiment, and EPR results showed •OH and FeIV O were the dominant reactive species in the system. Moreover, a sensible mechanism for OFL removal was proposed that nZVI@PAC aggregates OFL on its surface by adsorption, and then persistent free radicals (PFRs) and nZVI on the PAC degrade OFL by activating H2O2 to produce •OH and FeIV O. Furthermore, the effect of micro-electronic iron-carbon composite was proved by electrochemical experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, the degradation pathway of OFL in the nZVI@PAC/H2O2 system and the toxicity assessment of intermediates were also given. Meanwhile, sequential runs and continuous flow column experiments showed nZVI@PAC/H2O2 system had high stability. This work provides an innovative strategy of an advanced oxidation process based on heterogeneous reactions for organic contaminants removal using metal–carbon catalysts.

Abstract:A homemade flow-through electroactive filter was constructed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ofloxacin (OFL) fast removal. The Cu 2 nanowires (NWs) electrode was prepared using copper foam as both substrate and Cu source by direct oxidation method. The obtained electrode with abundant surface-active sites and good electrochemical reactivity markedly improved the activation and utilization efficiency of PMS, thus significantly promoting the catalytic removal reactions. The pH, PMS concentration, and applied voltage were optimized for the filter performance. Consequently, the removal efficiency of OFL reached about 80% in a single-pass mode ( τ < 5 min). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical scavenging tests confirmed the contribution of diversified active species in OFL removal. The Cu 2 NWs electrode exhibited reliable regenerative properties, which maintained high OFL removal activity after 5 rebuild cycles. Furthermore, the developed electroactive filter exhibited relatively less consumption of energy and PMS dosage compared with the published research. Finally, the underlying mechanism for the outstanding performance of OFL removal was also revealed as well. This work illustrated new light on high-efficient and low-cost remediation strategies for antibiotic wastewater.

Efficient Degradation of Ofloxacin by Magnetic CuFe2O4 Coupled PMS System: Optimization, Degradation Pathways and Toxicity Evaluation

Abstract:Magnetic CuFe2O4 was prepared with the modified sol–gel method and used for enhanced peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and ofloxacin (OFL) degradation. The OFL could almost degrade within 30 min at a catalyst dosage of 0.66 g/L, PMS concentration of 0.38 mM, and initial pH of 6.53 without adjustment, using response surface methodology (RSM) with Box-Behnken design (BBD). In the CuFe2O4/PMS system, the coexisting substances, including CO32−, NO3−, SO42−, Cl− and humic acid, have little effect on the OFL degradation. The system also performs well in actual water, such as tap water and surface water (Mei Lake), indicating the excellent anti-interference ability of the system. The cyclic transformation between Cu(II)/Cu(I) and Fe(III)/Fe(II) triggers the generation of active radicals including SO4•−, •OH, •O2− and 1O2. The OFL degradation pathway, mainly involving the dehydrogenation, deamination, hydroxylation, decarboxylation and carboxylation processes, was proposed using mass spectroscopy. Moreover, the toxicity assessment indicated that the end intermediates are environmentally friendly. This study is about how the CuFe2O4/PMS system performs well in PMS activation for refractory organic matter removal in wastewater.

Abstract:Since ofloxacin (OFX) is one of many common antibiotics, which effluxes into aquatic environment in relatively high concentration, it has become of significant environmental concern due to the potential for increased antibiotic resistance. In this study, an innovative functional Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 composite was successfully used for the Fenton-like oxidation of OFX, with a OFX removal efficiency >98% under optimal conditions. FTIR analysis confirmed that OFX removal occurred via adsorption to Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 by a combination of π-π bond intercalation and electrostatic interaction, while XPS revealed that the Fe/Ni NPs in Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 were also involved in oxidation. Furthermore, LC-MS analysis identified the presence of several OFX degradation products post exposure, which indicted that Fe/Ni NPs in Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 reacted with H2O2 to form •OH, leading to Fenton-like oxidation of OFX. Thus overall, OFX removal by Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 involved both adsorption to ZIF-8 and Fenton-like oxidation by Fe/Ni NPs. A synergistic mechanism for OFX removal by Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 was thus proposed. The removal efficiency of the synthesized catalysts remained high (above 65%) even after a 5th reuse cycle, which reflected the high stability of Fe/Ni@ZIF-8. Overall, this study demonstrated that Fe/Ni@ZIF-8 had significant potential for the removal of OFX from wastewaters with a removal efficiency >90%.

Abstract:A novel CoFe2O4-decorated flat-sheet ceramic membrane (CFCM) was prepared via a facile one-step hydrothermal method and utilized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in the catalytic degradation of ofloxacin (OFX) in a dead-end filtration mode. Several characterization methods confirmed the successful deposition of a CoFe2O4 layer on the surface of a pristine Al2O3 ceramic membrane. The CFCM possessed a considerably smaller average pore size (45 nm) and contact angle (20°) than a pristine Al2O3 flat-sheet ceramic membrane (80 nm and 50°) after modification. The catalytic degradation results revealed that nearly 100% removal of 40 μM OFX could be achieved within 20 min at pH 6.0, with 2 mM PMS and 100 kPa of transmembrane pressure (TMP). Moreover, the CFCM suffered little interference from co-existing SO<math>2−4</math> and Cl− in the water matrix, but was significantly hindered by HCO<math>−3</math> and humic acid. The low concentration of metal-leaching by CFCM will makes it reliable for catalytic degradation processes. Sulfate radicals were found to be the predominant reactive radicals that drove OFX degradation, and according to density functional theory (DFT) calculations they were generated via electron transfer from CoFe2O4 to chemisorbed PMS.

Improved Ultrafiltration Performance Through Dielectric Barrier Discharge/sulfite Pretreatment: Effects of Water Matrices and Mechanistic Insights

Abstract:The feasibility of utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite-ultrafiltration system was investigated in various real water bodies, aiming to clarify the mechanism behind alleviating membrane fouling while synchronously degrading perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during the treatment process of Yangtze River water. The results demonstrated that the DBD/sulfite pretreatment exhibited remarkable rates of membrane flux mitigation (>84.10 %) and efficient degradation rates of PFOA (>85.13 %), which decreased with increasing pH from 3.0 to 11.0. The presence of anions, cations, and natural organic matter slightly hindered the membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation by quenching free radicals; however, the addition of SO42- had a negligible impact. The mitigation of membrane fouling was attributed to the significant involvement of various radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (•O2-), and other radicals such as SO3•-, exhibiting respective contributions of 33.25 %, 28.49 %, 20.56 %, 11.32 %, and 6.39 % in a synergistic redox effect. The pretreatment effectively reduced standard blocking and cake filtration fouling mechanisms by creating a sparse fouling layer on the membrane surface while increasing its roughness. Additionally, the main active species that played a significant role in the degradation of PFOA were identified as SO4•-, •OH, and eaq-. These species contributed approximately 43.63 %, 24.39 %, and 20.65 % respectively to the degradation process. By employing mass spectrometry and density functional theory, a proposed pathway for PFOA degradation was established, effectively reducing the toxicity associated with its degradation byproducts. This study provides innovative insights into membrane-based water treatment technologies that effectively tackle both membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation.
Enhanced ofloxacin degradation in water by a novel integrated photocatalysis and rotating magnetic field system

Abstract:In this work, a novel integrated Fe3O4/g-C3N4 (FC) composite and rotating magnetic field (RMF) system was developed to enhance the photodegradation of ofloxacin (OFX) in water. The RMF was excited by three-phase alternating current, providing great flexibility on the magnetic field and avoiding mechanical transmission. By integrating RMF, the OFX degradation by FC photocatalysis was greatly enhanced. With the optimal FC composition of 20 % (wt) Fe3O4 (FC20), >87 % OFX degradation could be achieved with 1 g/L FC20, an RMF-excited current of 2 A, and a reaction time of 300 min, compared to OFX decomposition of ∼65 % by FC20 photocatalysis alone. The magnetic induction intensity, solution pH, and water matrices all affected OFX degradation by the integrated FC-RMF system. The FC20 was reliable for OFX degradation in water with minimal efficacy reduction after four consecutive reuses. In the integrated FC-RMF system, reactive species' contribution to OFX degradation was in the order of holes > superoxide anions > hydroxyl radicals. The electron transfer mechanisms during OFX degradation and five potential degradation pathways were proposed. In summary, the integrated FC-RMF system demonstrated a potential route for enhancing the removal of OFX and possibly other antibiotic contaminants from water.

Abstract:Electro-Fenton membranes (EFMs) can synchronously realize organic micropollutants destruction and fouling mitigation in a single filtration process with the assistance of hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Herein, a nanoarray-structured EFM (NS-EFM) was designed by assembling Fenton reactive CoFe-LDH nanowires using a low-temperature hydrothermal method. Combined with a defect-engineering strategy, the oxygen vacancies (O Vac ) in the CoFe-LDH nanoarrays were tailored by manipulating the stoichiometry of cations to optimize the Fenton reactivity of NS-EFMs. The optimized NS-EFM demonstrated exceptional sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal (99.4%) and fast degradation kinetics (0.0846 min −1 ), but lower energy consumption (0.22 kWh m −3 per log removal of SMX). In-depth mechanism analysis revealed that the intrinsic electronic properties of O Vac endowed NS-EFM with enhanced reactivity and charge transferability at metallic active sites of CoFe-LDH, thereby intensifying •OH generation. Besides, the nanoarray-structured NS-EFM built a confined microreactor space, leading to expedited •OH microflow to SMX. Meanwhile, the hydrophilic nature of CoFe-LDH nanoarrays synergistically contributed to the high flux recovery (95.0%) and minimal irreversible membrane fouling (5.0%), effectively alleviating membrane fouling within pores and on surfaces. This study offers insights into the potential of defect engineering as a foundational strategy in the design of EFMs, significantly advancing the treatment of organic pollutants and control of membrane fouling.

Abstract:Copper ferrite embedded in montmorillonite (CuFe2O4-montmorillonite, CF-Mt) was designed and employed as a composite catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade ofloxacin (OFL). CuFe2O4 characterization confirmed that this compound successfully dispersed on the surface of the montmorillonite. CF-Mt loaded with 40% CuFe2O4 (0.4CF-Mt) possessed favorable magnetic properties, excellent pore structure, and abundant catalytic sites, obtaining the highest OFL degradation efficiency (85.2%) in the presence of PMS compared to other CF-Mt composites with different CuFe2O4 loads. Influencing parameters including catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, initial pH, and co-existing anions were also investigated. High catalyst dosage and PMS concentrations were found to favor OFL degradation. The optimum pH in the 0.4CF-Mt/PMS system for OFL removal was 6.8 (neutral pH). Additionally, Cl− promoted OFL degradation performance, whereas H2PO4 − and HCO3 − had the opposite effect. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that the OFL degradation in the 0.4CF-Mt/PMS system was largely attributed to free radical pathways dominated by SO4 ·- and ·OH. OFL mineralization increased with reaction time, finally reaching a mineralization rate of 54.8%. Furthermore, 0.4CF-Mt maintained excellent catalytic activity after repeated use. Taken together, this study provides a basis for the development of strategies to design bimetallic oxide catalysts for the efficient treatment of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater with PMS.

Abstract:Antibiotic pollution in waters is a major health issue that induces antimicrobial resistance and, in turn, the inefficacy of actual antibiotics to cure diseases. There is therefore a need for antibiotic removal from water and wastewater, yet actual remediation techniques are limited. Here, we studied the degradation of ciprofloxacin by the photo-Fenton reaction using a Nafion/Fe3+ membrane as catalyst, with focus on the effect of hydroxyl (·OH) on membrane stability and recycling. Concentration of ciprofloxacin and ·OH were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The Nafion membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflection (ATR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Results show that the Nafion/Fe3+ membrane degrades ciprofloxacin completely within 4 h. After membrane recycling, degradation efficiency is reduced due to the loss of Fe3+ ions during membrane regeneration. Moreover, ·OH alters the carbon backbone of the membrane.

Emerging contaminants removal through fluorine-doped carbon hollow fiber microfiltration membrane based on metal-free electro-Fenton

Abstract:The emerging contaminants with high toxicity and bioaccumulation potentially threaten to human health, which was difficult removed by traditional biological treatment or membrane separation. In view of this, a novel type of fluorine (F)-doped carbon hollow fiber microfiltration membrane was prepared for realizing emerging contaminants removal through metal-free electro-Fenton. Herein, polyaniline (PANI) was used as a precursor for preparation of porous carbon membrane. The graphitic N and pyridinic N on porous carbon were used as the active sites for H 2 O 2 production and its further activation to ·OH, which realized metal-free electro-Fenton reaction. According to the results, the carbon nanotubes with F-PANI at the ratio of 1:1 and calcination temperature at 300°C endowed the membrane moderate resistance and pure water permeability of 430 Ω and 48.51 L/(m 2 ·h·bar), respectively. Importantly, the intensity of ·OH generation was further significant enhanced by introducing C-F bonding into the membrane. Therefore, the bisphenol A (BPA), sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and atrazine (ATZ) removal rates were 92.63%, 38.47% and 27.05%, respectively. For control group without bias, the removal rates of above contaminants were 0% removal rates. Moreover, the membrane permeate loss by filtrating BPA, SMZ and ATZ were 0.13, 0.15 and 0.05, which were 0.20, 0.24 and 0.21 for control group.

Abstract:Although conventional nanofiltration (NF) membrane is widely applied in water treatment, it faces the challenges of insufficient selectivity toward emerging contaminants, low permeability and non-sustainable fouling control. Herein, a novel electroactive metal-organic frameworks/carbon nanotubes membrane was constructed by facile and green nanobubbles-mediated non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) strategy for ultrafast antibiotics removal. It presented 3-fold to 100-fold higher permeability (101.3-105.7 L·h-1·m-2·bar-1) without compromising rejection (71.8 %-99.3 %) of common antibiotics (tetracycline, norfloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine) than most commercial and state-of-the-art NF membranes. The separation mechanism was due to the synergy of loose selective layer with three-dimensional interconnected networks and UiO-66/CNTs with unique pore sieving and charge property. It also presented excellent antibiotics selectivity with high NaCl/tetracycline separation factor of 194 and CuCl2/tetracycline separation factor of 316 for remediation of antibiotics and heavy metal combined pollution. Meanwhile, it possessed efficient anti-fouling, antibacterial and electro-driven self-cleaning ability, which enabled sustainable fouling control and disinfection with short process, low energy and chemical consumption. Furthermore, potential application of UiO-66/CNTs membrane in wastewater reclamation was demonstrated by stable antibiotics rejection, efficient flux recovery and long-term stability over 260 h. This study would provide useful insights into removal of emerging contaminants from water by advanced NF membrane.

Abstract:This study investigated the fouling mechanism in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment by membrane distillation, with a focus on the interfacial electrokinetic effect between the membrane and foulants as well as the surface hydrophobicity effect, and an advanced in-situ optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology. Three antibiotics with different surface charges were used as feed solutions, consisting of cefotaxime (CTX, negatively charged), tobramycin (TOB, positively charged) and ciprofloxacin (CFX, neutral) for studying the interfacial electrokinetic effect. In order to study the influence of membrane hydrophobicity on the fouling process, two commercial membranes with different hydrophobicity were employed; commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (C-PVDF) and commercial polytetrafluoroethylene (C-PTFE). Additionally, we also fabricated a fouling resistant polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane coated with perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FTES)-TiO2 nanoparticles to engineer the surface charge and energy, and to achieve a superhydrophobic surface. After the MD operation, OCT scans detected no visible foulant layer on the three negatively charged membranes when treating negatively charged CTX. On the other hand, in the case of positively charged TOB, the rejection efficiency was only 78% due to its accumulation behavior on the C-PVDF membrane surface, with a thick foulant layer (326–408 μm) and blockage of pores, while the TiO2-PVDF membrane exhibited a stable performance.

Abstract:Herein, degradation of ofloxacin (OFX) by pulsed discharge plasma (PDP) coupled with multi-catalysis using graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites was inspected. The graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, and their morphology, specific surface area, chemical bond structure and magnetic property were characterized systematically. Compared with sole Fe3O4, the specific surface area of graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites increased from 26.34 m2/g to 125.04 m2/g. The prepared graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites had higher paramagnetism and the magnetic strength reached 66.05 emu/g, which was prone to separate from solution. Graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites could further accelerate OFX degradation compared to sole Fe3O4. When graphene content was 18 wt%, graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites exhibited the highest catalytic activity, and the removal efficiency of OFX enhanced from 65.0% (PDP alone) to 99.9%. 0.23 g/L dosage and acid solution were beneficial for OFX degradation. Higher stability of graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites could be maintained although four times use. Graphene-Fe3O4 nanocomposites could catalyze H2O2 and O3 to produce more ·OH. The degradation products of OFX were identified by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and ion chromatography (IC). According to the identified products and discrete Fourier transform (DFT), the degradation pathway was inferred. Further toxicity assessment of products manifested that the toxicity of oral rat 50% lethal dose (LD50) and the developmental toxicity of OFX were reduced.

Abstract:As emerging contaminants used for treating various tract infections, fluoroquinolones (such as enoxacin, ofloxacin, etc.) enter water bodies via point-source discharges of wastewater treatment plants and many of them raise environmental and health concerns. Herein, a novel adsorbent, derived from a useful renewable low-cost grapefruit peel, was prepared to investigate the adsorption behavior of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (enoxacin and ofloxacin). The obtained adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). Further, the equilibrium sorption of the adsorption process was analyzed with isotherm models and kinetic models. Under optimal adsorption conditions, equilibrium data conformed to the Elovich model, and the kinetics of adsorption was fitted well with Redlich-Peterson model. Combined with thermodynamic analysis, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond, π-π stacking interaction were the possible adsorption mechanisms for both fluoroquinolone antibiotics onto the novel adsorbent. This work explored a promising adsorbent for the elimination of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in environmental remediation.
