Abstract:The present study was conducted to degrade and detoxify 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) under UV irradiation in the presence of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The treatment efficiency was evaluated on the basis of degradation and cytotoxicity reduction as well as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) removal. The process variables such as TiO2, pH, UV irradiation time and H2O2 were optimized. Central composite design in combination with response surface methodology was employed to optimize the process variables. A quadratic model was proposed to predict the treatment efficiency and analysis of variance was used to determine the significance of the variables. The correlation between the experimental and predicted degradation was confirmed by the F and P values (<0.05). The coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.99) were high enough to support the validity of developed model. At optimized conditions, up to 92% degradation of 2-CP was achieved with 3.5 × 10-4 s-1 rate constant. Significant reductions in BOD, COD and TOC values were also achieved. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using bioassays and it was observed that UV/TiO2/H2O2 reduced the cytotoxicity considerably. It is concluded that UV/TiO2/H2O2 could possibly be used to detoxify 2-CP in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Chlorophenols (CPs) are among the most significant environmental concerns worldwide, which pose a serious threat to global water safety and human health. Herein, a novel electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) pathway was proposed for the detoxification of CPs, where both the cleavage of C−Cl bond and hydrogenation of phenol ring take place. Employing a fibrous Ru/TiO2 electrode (f-Ru/TiO2) with massive microchannels, we achieved over 99.8% removal of 1 mM 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) within 60 min, with a corresponding kinetic constant of 0.101 min−1. The toxic 4-CP was completely transformed into cyclohexanol, which possesses almost no biotoxicity and could be rapidly recovered from treated water. The ECH system exhibited high 4-CP removal efficiencies at different pH conditions (3−11). Besides, a 4-CP removal efficiency of over 99.1% was achieved even at a remarkably high concentration (10 mM). Mechanism analysis confirms that direct electron transfer dominates the ECH process, while the contribution of atomic hydrogen (H*) is less prominent. Overall, this study demonstrates an inspiring ECH approach with enhanced pollutants diffusion and electron transfer for not only the detoxification of but also resource recovery from chlorophenol wastewater.

Abstract:In this paper the feasibility of a multi-barrier treatment (MBT) for the regeneration of synthetic industrial wastewater (SIWW) was evaluated. Industrial pollutants (orange II, phenol, 4-chlorophenol and phenanthrene) were added to the effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plant. The proposed MBT begins with a microfiltration membrane pretreatment (MF), followed by hydrogen peroxide photolysis (H2O2/UVC) and finishing, as a polishing step, with catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) using granular activated carbon (GAC) at ambient conditions. During the microfiltration step (0.7 μm) the decrease of suspended solids concentration, turbidity and Escherichia coli in treated water were 88, 94 and 99%, respectively. Also, the effluent's transmittance (254 nm) was increased by 14.7%. Removal of more than 99.9% of all added pollutants, mineralization of 63% of organic compounds and complete disinfection of total coliforms were reached during the H2O2/UVC treatment step (H2O2:TOC w/w ratio = 5 and an UVC average dose accumulated by wastewater 8.80 WUVC s cm(-2)). The power and efficiency of the lamp, the water transmittance and photoreactor geometry are taken into account and a new equation to estimate the accumulated dose in water is suggested. Remaining organic pollutants with a higher oxidation state of carbon atoms (+0.47) and toxic concentration of residual H2O2 were present in the effluent of the H2O2/UVC process. After 2.3 min of contact time with GAC at CWPO step, 90 and 100% of total organic carbon and residual H2O2 were removed, respectively. Also, the wastewater toxicity was studied using Vibrio fischeri and Sparus aurata larvae. The MBT operational and maintenance costs (O&M) was estimated to be 0.59 € m(-3).
Efficient removal of endocrine disruptors using nano zero-valent iron loaded organo-attapulgite: Mechanism and factors

Abstract:Endocrine-disrupting pollutants have become a major problem in aquatic environments. Advanced oxidation processes are recognized as promising technologies for treating endocrine disruptor-contaminated water. Herein, a novel nanoscale zero-valent iron loaded organo-attapulgite (NZVI@OATP) was employed as a catalyst to activate persulfate (PDS) for phenanthrene (PHE) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) degradation. NZVI@OATP with a NZVI:OATP mole ratio of 1:1 (CTAB:ATP = 1:200) exhibited 100 % PHE and 84 % DBP degradation within 30 min, and chloride was found to have a positive effect on their degradation. Radical scavenger and electron paramagnetic resonance studies revealed that the contribution of the active species follows the order of O2- ≈ 1O2 > SO4- ≫ OH . The optimal degradation pathways were proposed based on the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and density functional theory and the possible degradation paths of PHE and DBP, including the 9,10-phenanthraquinone and phthalic acid pathways, respectively, were proposed. The toxicity estimation software tool showed that the toxicities of PHE and DBP were reduced after degradation. Moreover, 50 % PHE degradation could be achieved after five cycles, demonstrating that NZVI@OATP is a promising catalyst for endocrine disruptor treatment with PDS.

Nitrogen requirements of white-lipped peccary (Mammalia, Tayassuidae).

Abstract:A study was conducted to determine the protein requirement of the white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari) performing a nitrogen (N) balance digestion trial. In a 4 × 4 Latin square design, four adult captive male peccaries were fed four isoenergetic diets containing four different levels of N (13.3, 19.2, 28.7, and 37.1 g N/kg dry matter). After 15 days of adaptation, the total collection of feces and urine was carried out for five consecutive days. By regression analysis between N intake and N in feces and urine, the metabolic fecal nitrogen (MFN = 3.1 g/kg of dry matter intake) and daily endogenous urinary N (EUN = 91.0 mg/kg(0.75) ) were determined. Likewise, by regression analyses between consumption of nitrogen and the nitrogen balance [NBN consumed-(fecal N + Urine N)] we estimated the daily requirement of 336.5 mgN/kg(0.75) . Therefore, if food intake is unrestricted, white-lipped peccaries require a minimum content in their diet of about 4.5% crude protein as percentage of dry diet. These values are similar to those found in frugivorous wild ruminants, which reinforces the proposition that peccaries have a digestive physiology nearer to that of ruminants than of domestic pigs. Furthermore, the low nutritional maintenance requirements for white-lipped peccary may explain how this species thrive in the Neo-tropical region eating predominantly palm-fruits that normally have low crude protein contents.
Solar photocatalytic degradation of total organic halogen in water using TiO2 catalyst

Abstract:Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in treated wastewater effluents pose environmental and health risks during water reuse. Solar-TiO2 photocatalysis is a promising technology for degrading organic pollutants in treated effluents. In this study, total organic halogen (TOX) was used as an analytical tool to determine the efficiency of solar-TiO2 photocatalytic process for the dehalogenation of DBPs in water. Natural solar photocatalytic experiments using TiO2 particles were conducted to evaluate dehalogenation kinetics of different TOX groups formed by fulvic acid including total organic chlorine (TOCl), bromine (TOBr) and iodine (TOI). The results showed that the mixed phase TiO2 (Aeroxide P25) was much more effective at TOX removal than the anatase (Hombikat UV-100) and rutile (TiOxide) TiO2 particles. The TOX photocatalytic degradation rates of different halogen substituents ranked as TOI > TOCl (NH2Cl) > TOBr > TOCl (Cl2). The TOX removal followed first-order kinetics with half-lives of 42.8, 11.0, 5.0 and 2.7 min for TOCl (Cl2), TOBr, TOCl (NH2Cl), and TOI, respectively, at the 100 mg L-1 TiO2 dose. The TOX dehalogenation was enhanced at pH 9 compared to pH 5, and the addition of hydrogen peroxide had limited improvement in the TOX removal. Hydrophobic and molecular weight (MW) > 1 kDa fractions of TOCl (Cl2) were more susceptible to the solar photocatalytic process than the hydrophilic and MW < 1 kDa fractions. The solar-TiO2 photocatalytic process also effectively removed TOX in chlorinated and chloraminated wastewater samples. The results of this study suggest that the solar-TiO2 photocatalysis is an effective treatment technology for TOX removal in water reuse.

Abstract:Post-treatment of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is not efficient in eliminating toxicity of chlorinated water. Removal of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and toxicity of chlorinated water by UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/ H2O2 ) and UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) was investigated. In the absence of bromide, adding H2O2 or PMS enhanced the removal of nitrogenous DBPs and total organic chlorine (TOCl) than UV alone (1200 mJ/cm(2)). UV/ PMS decreased the cytotoxicity from 10.6 to 4.4 mg-Phenol/L and genotoxicity from 7.1 to 2.0 mu g-4-NQO/L, more efficient than UV/H2O2. However, results were quite different in the presence of bromide. PMS led to the increased formation of total organic bromine (TOBr) in chlorinated water. UV/PMS was therefore less efficient in toxicity removal than UV/H2O2 . In the presence of bromide, UV/H2O2 decreased the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity by 85% and 68%, while UV/PMS only removed the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity by 59% and 46%. In the UV/PMS process, SO4'- was more efficient on toxicity removal than 'OH. Contributions of UV irradiation, 'OH and SO4'- were 55%, 14% and 31% to cytotoxicity removal, and 49%, 15% and 36% to genotoxicity removal. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using UV/H2O2 and UV/PMS as post-treatments to enhance the removal of DBPs and toxicity of chlorinated water.
Coupling enhanced water solubilization with cyclodextrin to indirect electrochemical treatment for pentachlorophenol contaminated soil remediation

Abstract:This study undertakes to examine, at laboratory scale, the technical feasibility, mechanisms and performances provided by coupling the enhanced flushing abilities of cyclodextrin solutions for pentachlorophenol (PCP) removal from contaminated soil with indirect electrochemical treatment for the final disposal of soil extract solutions containing high PCP loads (0.77mmolL(-1)). The hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) solution increased the aqueous concentration of PCP in soil extract effluents to as much as 3.5 times the concentrations obtained during the water flush of the soil. PCP was treated with electrochemically generated Fenton's reagent in an aqueous medium. The increase in PCP water solubility in the presence of HPCD is balanced by the corresponding decrease in PCP degradation rate under indirect electrochemical treatment. This is due to the high carbon content (HPCD and dissolved natural organic matter) in the soil extract solutions, which compete for the non-selective hydroxyl radical reaction to PCP. However, our results indicate that HPCD has a beneficial effect on the degradation rates of PCP. This relative improvement in PCP degradation could be explained by the formation of the ternary complex (PCP-cyclodextrin-iron) which may direct hydroxyl reaction to PCP and which would, in any case, justify the use of a Fenton -like process for the final treatment of soil extract solutions. Total disappearance of PCP and 90% abatement of the chemical oxygen demand were achieved within an 11h electrolysis treatment time. Elucidation of the PCP degradation pathway indicates that after successive PCP hydroxylations, oxidative opening of the PCP aromatic ring quickly occurred, leading to small unstable non-chlorinated or partially chlorinated short chain carboxylic acids, such as monochloroacetic and dichloromaleic acid. Determination of the concentration of these acids shows that indirect electrochemical treatment leads to oxalic acid accumulation in aqueous solutions treated. A decrease in toxicity was observed at the end of the treatment time.
Degradation of Pentachlorophenol in Peroxymonosulfate/heat System: Kinetics, Mechanism, and Theoretical Calculations

Abstract:In this work, we systematically investigated the transformation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the heat-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system. The degradation efficiency of PCP increased with initial PMS concentration, temperature and pH. The calculated % reaction stoichiometric efficiency (RSE) reached up to 92.2%. SO42- was found to promote the degradation of PCP, because it significantly enhanced the generation of HO center dot and SO4 center dot- as confirmed by EPR experiments. According to the radical quenching tests, SO4 center dot- was the dominant reactive radical for PCP degradation. A total of 10 intermediates were identified, and hydroxylation, sulfate addition, dechlorination and oligomerization were speculated as main reaction pathways. Then, possible reactions between reactive radicals and substrate were calculated at the m062x/land2dz level to interpret the mechanisms of different reactions. It was found that ionic PCP had lower activation energy than molecular PCP, and hence showed higher reactivity towards SO4 center dot- and HO center dot in the course of radical addition reaction. As for the coupling reaction, SO4 center dot- more likely to react with ionic PCP to generate phenoxy radicals than HO center dot, due to the negative Gibbs free energy change. Meanwhile, the abstraction of an Cl atom by HO center dot was confirmed to be the first step for the formation of dechlorination products. In addition, toxicity evaluation by ECOSAR and TEST programs illustrated that the toxicity of reaction products was all lower than that of PCP. Findings of this work demonstrated the feasibility of this PMS/heat method for effective removal of PCP in contaminated waters.

Abstract:The industrial wastewater containing phenol is characterized by its elevated toxicity, resistance to biodegradation, and pronounced bioaccumulation. Traditional treatment methods frequently fall short in effectively removing phenol. In this study, a UV photoelectrochemical synergistic catalytic oxidation process was employed for the efficient elimination of phenol. The investigation systematically assessed the impact of various factors, including electrolyte type, concentration, current density, and initial pH, on phenol degradation. Furthermore, the degradation products were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results indicate that the oxidation and degradation of phenol in the UV photoelectrochemical synergistic catalytic system adhere to a first-order kinetic equation. Moreover, the combined UV and electrochemical catalytic degradation process demonstrated a synergistic effect, significantly enhancing the efficiency of phenol degradation. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of UV combined electrochemical catalytic degradation of phenol and provide reasonable speculation on the degradation pathway of phenol under UV electrochemical co-catalytic oxidation.

Simultaneous Phenol Removal and Resource Recovery from Phenolic Wastewater by Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation

Abstract:Efficient pollutants removal and simultaneous resource recovery from wastewater are of great significance for sustainable development. In this study, an electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) approach was developed to selectively and rapidly transform phenol to cyclohexanol, which possesses high economic value and low toxicity and can be easily recovered from the aqueous solution. A three-dimensional Ru/TiO2 electrode with abundant active sites and massive microflow channels was prepared for efficient phenol transformation. A pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.135 min-1 was observed for ECH of phenol (1 mM), which was 34-fold higher than that of traditional electrochemical oxidation (EO). Both direct electron transfer and indirect reduction by atomic hydrogen (H*) played pivotal roles in the hydrogenation of phenol ring. The ECH technique also showed excellent performance in a wide pH range of 3-11 and with a high concentration of phenol (10 mM). Moreover, the functional groups (e.g., chloro- and methyl-) on phenol showed little influence on the superiority of the ECH system. This work provides a novel and practical solution for remediation of phenolic wastewater as well as recovery of valuable organic compounds.

Abstract:Organochlorides and particularly chlorophenols are environmental pollutants that deserve special attention. Enzymatic membrane bioreactors may be alternatives for efficiently removing such hazardous organochlorides from aqueous solutions. We propose here a novel enzymatic membrane bioreactor comprising an ultrafiltration membrane GR81PP, electrospun fibers made of cellulose acetate, and laccase immobilized using an incubation and a fouling approach. Configurations of this biosystem exhibiting the highest catalytic activity were selected for removal of 2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol from aqueous solution in an enzymatic membrane bioreactor under various process conditions. The highest removal of chlorophenols, at 88% and 74% for 2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol, respectively, occurred at pH 5 and 30 °C in the GR81PP/cellulose acetate/laccase biosystem with enzyme immobilized by the fouling method. Furthermore, the GR81PP/cellulose acetate/laccase biosystem with enzyme immobilized by the fouling method exhibited significant reusability and storage stability compared with the biosystem with laccase immobilized by the incubation method. The mechanism of enzyme immobilization is based on pore blocking and cake-layer formation, while the mechanism of chlorophenols removal was identified as a synergistic combination of membrane separation and enzymatic conversion. The importance of the conducted research is due to efficient removal of hazardous organochlorides using a novel enzymatic membrane bioreactor. The study demonstrates the biosystem's high catalytic activity, reusability, and stability, offering a promising solution for environmental pollution control.
Applications of UV/H2O2, UV/persulfate, and UV/persulfate/Cu2+ for the elimination of reverse osmosis concentrate generated from municipal wastewater reclamation treatment plant: Toxicity, transformation products, and disinfection byproducts

Abstract:Reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) resulting from treatment of municipal wastewater reclamation involves high concentrations of recalcitrant pollutants. This study evaluated the toxicity of an ROC containing harmful biocides during representative UV synergistic oxidation processes (SOPs) (e.g., UV/hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), UV/persulfate (PS), and UV/PS/Cu2+). Treated ROC exhibited up to 1.3–2.3 times higher toxicity than the parent compounds such as dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC) and dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC). Based on the intermediates identification, the major toxic intermediates were screened through silico assessment using the quantitative Ecological Structure-Activity Relationship (ECOSAR) tool. The transformation products (TPs) of hydroxylation and ketonization were the major formed reactions from the UV/PS/Cu2+. Also, some cytotoxic TPs were accumulated during the UV/H2O2 and UV/PS oxidations, where the carbonaceous-disinfection byproducts were more than the nitrogenous-disinfection byproducts. In the presence of chloride and bromide, chlorate and bromate could be formed during the UV-SOP; they were influenced by the different water matrix in comparison with the different ROC. Also, the formation of the total organic halogen species (TOX) was found to follow this order: UV/PS/Cu2+ < UV/H2O2 < UV/PS. In this study, the predicted cytotoxicity using the correlation between the TOX and the cytotoxicity was more acceptable than that of the cytotoxicity index method. Further, the R-square of the correlation between the TOX and the cytotoxicity for the UV/H2O2 and UV/PS was 0.82 and 0.79, respectively. The predicted cytotoxicity using the TOX correlation method in the ROC could also be used to monitor and prevent the application of different oxidations in municipal wastewater reclamation treatment plants.

Abstract:Halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) like chlorophenols (CPs) are one of persistent organic pollutants in environment, and it is an urgent issue to remove HOCs efficiently because they are detrimental to aquatic organisms and human beings. Electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (ECH) technique has been widely studied to deal with chlorophenols. However, litter attention has been paid to the further treatment of the dechlorination product phenol. Meanwhile, photoelectrocatalysis is regarded as a promising method for contaminants elimination and water splitting using inexhaustible solar energy. Therefore, this study proposed a photoelectrochemical reductive hydrodechlorination and sequential oxidation method for thorough degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) using WO3/Mo-doped BiVO4 as photoanode and Pd/Ni foam as cathode. Several factors such as Pd-loading amount, initial pH, overpotential, and Cl-that would influence the efficiency of 2,4-DCP hydrodechlorination and phenol oxidation have been investigated in detail. The 2,4-DCP could be completely hydrodechlorinated to phenol, and removal efficiency of the obtained phenol reached similar to 45% for 4 h reaction under optimized conditions. Additionally, there was no secondary chlorinated pollutant generated during the oxidation process even though the existence of Cl-. Lastly, the possible mechanism and degradation pathway were also explored based on LC-MS. This study proposed an efficient and environmental-friendly technique for complete degradation of chlorophenols, which might be also suitable for other HOCs and would be industrialized with the help of further studies.

Abstract:Pharmaceutically active compounds are carried into aquatic bodies along with domestic sewage, industrial and agricultural wastewater discharges. Psychotropic drugs, which can be toxic to the biota, have been detected in natural waters in different parts of the world. Conventional water treatments, such as activated sludge, do not properly remove these recalcitrant substances, so the development of processes able to eliminate these compounds becomes very important. Advanced oxidation processes are considered clean technologies, capable of achieving high rates of organic compounds degradation, and can be an efficient alternative to conventional treatments. In this study, the degradation of alprazolam, clonazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, and carbamazepine was evaluated through TiO2/UV-A, H2O2/UV-A, and TiO2/H2O2/UV-A, using sunlight and artificial irradiation. While using TiO2 in suspension, best results were found at [TiO2] = 0.1 g L−1. H2O2/UV-A displayed better results under acidic conditions, achieving from 60 to 80% of removal. When WWTP was used, degradation decreased around 50% for both processes, TiO2/UV-A and H2O2/UV-A, indicating a strong matrix effect. The combination of both processes was shown to be an adequate approach, since removal increased up to 90%. H2O2/UV-A was used for disinfecting the aqueous matrices, while mineralization was obtained by TiO2-photocatalysis.

Abstract:Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a prominent groundwater pollutant due to its stability, widespread contamination, and negative health effects upon human exposure; thus, an immense need exists for enhanced environmental remediation techniques. Temperature-responsive domains and catalyst incorporation in membrane domains bring significant advantages for toxic organic decontamination. In this study, hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) were functionalized with stimuli-responsive poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAm), poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA), and catalytic zero-valent iron/palladium (Fe/Pd) for heightened reductive degradation of such pollutants, utilizing methyl orange (MO) as a model compound. By utilizing PNIPAm's transition from hydrophilic to hydrophobic expression above the LCST of 32 °C, increased pollutant diffusion and adsorption to the catalyst active sites were achieved. PNIPAm-PMMA hydrogels exhibited 11.5× and 10.8× higher equilibrium adsorption values for MO and TCE, respectively, when transitioning from 23 °C to 40 °C. With dip-coated PNIPAm-PMMA-functionalized HFMs (weight gain: ~15%) containing Fe/Pd nanoparticles (dp~34.8 nm), surface area-normalized rate constants for batch degradation were determined, resulting in a 30% and 420% increase in degradation efficiency above 32 °C for MO and TCE, respectively, due to enhanced sorption on the hydrophobic PNIPAm domain. Overall, with functionalized membranes containing superior surface area-to-volume ratios and enhanced sorption sites, efficient treatment of high-volume contaminated water can be achieved.

Abstract:Since telomerase has been recognized as a relevant factor distinguishing cancer cells from normal cells, it has become a very promising target for anti-cancer therapy. A correlation between short telomere length and increased mortality was revealed in many studies. The telomerase expression/activity appears to be one of the most crucial factors to study to improve cancer therapy and prevention. However, this multisubunit enzymatic complex can be regulated at various levels. Thus, several strategies have been proposed to control telomerase in cancer cells such as anti-sense technology against TR and TERT, ribozymes against TERT, anti-estrogens, progesterone, vitamin D, retinoic acid, quadruplex stabilizers, telomere and telomerase targeting agents, modulation of interaction with other proteins involved in the regulation of telomerase and telomeres, etc. However, the transcription control of key telomerase subunits seems to play the crucial role in whole complexes activity and cancer cells immortality. Thus, the research of telomerase regulation can bring significant insight into the knowledge concerning stem cells metabolism but also ageing. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge of numerous telomerase regulation mechanisms at the transcription level in human that might become attractive anti-cancer therapy targets.
