Abstract:Petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) including phenolic compounds cause major environmental impacts just the once released into soils or groundwater. Among the core technologies, permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) have been so far exploited to contain and control such contaminants within the subsurface layers of the soil. Against this background, the present study investigated flow-biofilm interactions in a laboratory-scale permeable reactive bio-barrier (PRBB). To this end, an experimental setup was firstly built by embedding pressure measurement ports, at 10 cm intervals, onto a cylindrical column with a diameter of 57 mm and a height of 50 cm, and then filled with a porous medium, made up of sand with an average diameter of 1.78 mm. The bacterium, Pseudomonas putida ( P. putida ), was also utilized to generate the biofilm. Afterward, phenol-containing water was passed through the column at a rate of 2 L/h under a hydrodynamic laminar flow regime. Experimental evidence showed that the biofilm formed by bacterial growth could shrink the bio-barrier (BB) porosity from 0.35 to 0.07, instigating a drop by 590 and 840 times in the hydraulic pressure across the column at phenol concentrations, 200 and 400 mg/L, respectively. The desired biofilm additionally managed to remove 40 and 30% of phenol at concentrations of 200 and 400 mg/L, in that order. Exploring the variations in hydraulic conductivity in different layers plus the microscopic images further demonstrated that the biofilm created at phenol concentration of 200 mg/L seemed to be much stronger and even more stable, compared to the one at 400 mg/L. This was traceable to the better adaptation of P. putida to lower concentrations of phenol as the carbon source. Furthermore, the study results established that the given PRBB could help decompose only a small portion of phenol, but outperformed in terms of containing and controlling this contaminant through reducing hydraulic conductivity.

Abstract:The effluents from pulp and paper manufacturing industries contain high concentrations of phenol, which when discharged directly into surface water streams, increases the biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). In this study, two dominant bacteria SP-4 and SP-8 were isolated from the effluent emanating with a pulp and paper industry. The selected phenol-degrading isolates were identified as Staphylococcus sp. and Staphylococcus sciuri respectively by using nucleotide sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis of 16 S rRNA regions of the genome. The two isolates used for the biodegradation process effectively degraded phenol concentration of pulp and paper industry effluent upto 1600 and 1800 mg/L resepctively. The individual isolates and consortium were immobilized using activated carbon, wood dust, and coal ash. Additionally, the effluent was treated using a bio-filter tower packed column immobilized with bacterial cells at a constant flow rate of 5 mL/min. The present study showed that the developed immobilized microbial consortium can effectively degrade 99% of the phenol present in pulp and paper industry effluents, resulting in a significant reduction in BOD and COD of the system. This study can be well implemented on real-scale systems as the bio-filter towers packed with immobilized bacterial consortium can effectively treat phenol concentrations up to 1800 mg/L. The study can be implemented for bioremediation processes in phenolic wastewater-contaminated sites.

Batch-mode degradation of high-strength phenolic pollutants by Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain STV1713 immobilized on single and hybrid matrices

Abstract:Controlled environments are pivotal in all bioconversion processes, influencing the efficacy of biocatalysts. In this study, we designed a batch bioreactor system with a packed immobilization column and a decontamination chamber to enhance phenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation using the hyper-tolerant bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa STV1713. When free cells were employed to degrade phenol and 2,4-DCP at a concentration of 1000 mg/L, the cells completely removed the pollutants within 28 h and 66 h, respectively. Simultaneous reductions in chemical oxygen demand and biological oxygen demand were observed (phenol: 30.21 mg/L/h and 16.92 mg/L/h, respectively; 2,4-dichlorophenol: 12.85 mg/L/h and 7.21 mg/L/h, respectively). After assessing the degradation capabilities, the bacterium was immobilized on various matrices (sodium alginate, alginate-chitosan-alginate and polyvinyl alcohol-alginate) to enhance pollutant removal. Hybrid immobilized cells exhibited greater tolerance and degradation capabilities than those immobilized in a single matrix. Among them, polyvinyl alcohol-alginate immobilized cells displayed the highest degradation capacities (up to 2000 mg/L for phenol and 2500 mg/L for 2,4-dichlorophenol). Morphological analysis of the immobilized cells revealed enhanced cell preservation in hybrid matrices. Furthermore, the elucidation of the metabolic pathway through the catechol dioxygenase enzyme assay indicated higher activity of the catechol 1,2-dioxygenase enzyme, suggesting that the bacterium employed an ortho-degradation mechanism for pollutant removal. Additionally, enzyme zymography confirmed the presence of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase, with the molecular weight of the enzyme determined as 245 kDa.

Abstract:As an efficient method to remove contaminants from highly polluted sites, enzyme biodegradation addresses unresolved issues such as bioremediation inefficiency. In this study, the key enzymes involved in PAH degradation were brought together from different arctic strains for the biodegradation of highly contaminated soil. These enzymes were produced via a multi-culture of psychrophilic Pseudomonas and Rhodococcus strains. As a result of biosurfactant production, the removal of pyrene was sufficiently prompted by Alcanivorax borkumensis . The key enzymes (e.g., naphthalene dioxygenase, pyrene dioxygenase, catechol-2,3 dioxygenase, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate hydroxylase, protocatechuic acid 3,4-dioxygenase) obtained via multi-culture were characterized by tandem LC–MS/MS and kinetic studies. To simulate in situ application of produced enzyme solutions, pyrene- and dilbit-contaminated soil was bioremediated in soil columns and flask tests by injecting enzyme cocktails from the most promising consortia. The enzyme cocktail contained about 35.2 U/mg protein pyrene dioxygenase, 61.4 U/mg protein naphthalene dioxygenase, 56.5 U/mg protein catechol-2,3-dioxygenase, 6.1 U/mg protein 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate hydroxylase, and 33.5 U/mg protein protocatechuic acid (P3,4D) 3,4-dioxygenase enzymes. It was found that after 6 weeks, the average pyrene removal values showed that the enzyme solution could be effective in the soil column system (80–85% degradation of pyrene).

Abstract:Phenol is one of the major toxic pollutants in the wastes generated by a number of industries and needs to be eliminated before their discharge. Although microbial degradation is a preferred method of waste treatment for phenol removal, the general inability of the degrading strains to tolerate higher substrate concentrations has been a bottleneck. Immobilization of the microorganism in suitable matrices has been shown to circumvent this problem to some extent. In this study, cells of Pseudomonas sp. CP4, a laboratory isolate that degrades phenol, cresols, and other aromatics, were immobilized by entrapment in Ca-alginate and agar gel beads, separately and their performance in a fluidized bed bioreactor was compared. In batch runs, with an aeration rate of 1 vol−1 vol−1 min−1, at 30°C and pH 7.0 ± 0.2, agar-encapsulated cells degraded up to 3000 mg l−1 of phenol as compared to 1500 mg l−1 by Ca-alginate-entrapped cells whereas free cells could tolerate only 1000 mg l−1. In a continuous process with Ca-alginate entrapped cells a degradation rate of 200 mg phenol l−1 h−1 was obtained while agar-entrapped cells were far superior and could withstand and degrade up to 4000 mg phenol l−1 in the feed with a maximum degradation rate of 400 mg phenol l−1 h−1. The results indicate a clear possibility of development of an efficient treatment technology for phenol containing waste waters with the agar-entrapped bacterial strain, Pseudomonas sp. CP4.

Background Phenol, a toxic and carcinogenic compound found in industrial effluent, poses a severe threat to the environment and aquatic life. Conventional methods such as physio-chemical techniques have limitations in efficiency, cost, and sustainability, leading to the development of advanced hybrid approaches like the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) to treat phenols. Review method In this study, we aimed at an in-depth review of MBBR for the remediation of phenolic wastewater at an industrial scale. The review uses a methodology that involves a comparative analysis of various conventional methods, including activated sludge process (ASP), sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR), Fluidized Bed Biofilm Rector (FBBR), and trickling filter (TF) with MBBR, to determine their efficacy in phenol degradation. In this context, a thorough bibliometric assay of MBBR is carried out to understand the recent publication trends. The study also examines the impact of different types and shapes of bio-carriers and their filling ratios on phenol biodegradation. Significant finding The present work demonstrates the feasibility of using an aerobic MBBR along with a Fenton-like system (advanced oxidation processes) to treat phenolic effluent LCCA is discussed for selected treatment methods for assessing the sustainability aspects. In light of recent advancements, future research endeavors should prioritize the refinement and optimization of MBBR systems to strengthen their efficiency and sustainability, thus paving the way for a greener and cleaner future. Biodegradation of Phenol Using the Indigenous Rhodococcus pyridinivorans Strain PDB9T NS-1 Immobilized in Calcium Alginate Beads

Abstract:Phenolic compounds are the major contaminants identified from various industrial effluents, which pose an extreme threat to the environment. Therefore, investigating an effective technique to remove these toxic phenolic compounds from the contaminated environment is very essential. In the present investigation, batch tests were performed to assess the biodegradation of phenol using an indigenous Rhodococcus pyridinivorans strain PDB9T NS-1 encapsulated in a calcium alginate bead system. In order to improve the mechanical stability, silica was added to the cell-embedded Ca-alginate beads. The impact of experimental conditions such as contact time, pH, and initial phenol doses was investigated. The biodegradation of phenol was examined over a wide range of phenol, and the results showed that more than 99.6% degradation was achieved at an initial phenol dose of 1000 mg/L in 70 h at 30 °C. Among the various sorption isotherm tested, the Freundlich isotherm was the best fitted to the experimental data. This behavior indicated a multilayer biosorption process and was controlled by heterogeneous surface energy. Based on an intra-particle diffusion model, internal mass transfer or pore diffusion predominated over exterior mass transfer in controlling the entire phenol biosorption process. The biosorption of phenol onto the cell encapsulated in the Ca-alginate bead follows pseudo-first-order kinetics with a superior phenol biosorption capacity of 155 mg/g of Ca-alginate. Further stability study revealed that the bead could be recycled successfully without any substantial decline in phenol degradation efficiency, indicating that the immobilized microbe possesses exceptional operating stability.
A tailored permeable reactive bio-barrier for in situ groundwater remediation: removal of 3-chlorophenol as a case study

Abstract:The present study explored bacterial aerobic biodegradation of reduced carbon-contaminants (RCC) in a pilot system mimicking remediation of a saturated aquifer in a permeable reactive biobarrier (PRBB). Bioaugmentation was performed with a pure culture of Pseudomonas putida macro-encapsulated in a cellulose-acetate porous envelope and integrated transversely to the flow trajectory of the fluid in the biobarrier and compared with controls without capsules. The macro-encapsulation technique applied allowed the incorporation of a built-in nutrient core for the slow release of macronutrients, i.e. N, P, instead of exogenous nutrients supply. 3-Chlorophenol (3CP) at a concentration range of 350-500 mg/L was chosen as an RCC model compound. The findings indicate efficient 3CP biodegradation during the PRBB operation with a similar degree of transformation (76 ± 2% and 72 ± 2%) and mineralization (55 ± 4% vs. 49 ± 3%) for exogenous and built-in nutrients supply, respectively. The extent of dechlorination in both cases (54 ± 10% vs. 40 ± 2%, respectively) followed mineralization rather than transformation, suggesting that Cl- release took place in late transformation stages. Negligible decontamination was observed in the control system without bioaugmentation. Concluding, tailored PRBB with macro-capsules incorporating a built-in nutrient core to support bacterial growth presents a significant environmental advantage controlling excess nutrients release required in bioremediation of oligotrophic systems.
Rapidly self-propelled microreactor for effective degradation of phenolic pollutions

Abstract:The organic pollutants (OPs) are responsible for pathological processes that affect various organs and systems, posing a challenge to the rapid and efficient degradation of low concentration OPs. Additionally, the complexity of the environment disturbs the degradation of OPs. In this study, we constructed a self-propelled microreactor with polymer tails (SPM), which was utilized at a concentration of 0.4 g/L to degrade phenolic pollutants (PhPs). The obtained microreactor (SPM) exhibited a maximum speed of 6172.8 μm/s in an aquatic environment, which eliminates the need for mechanical stirring in the photocatalytic process. The photoelectrochemical performances demonstrated its excellent ability to separate photogenerated electron-hole pairs (band energy 1.0 eV), as evidenced by a reaction rate of 0.0437 min −1 and 87 % degradation efficiency towards bisphenol A (BPA) within 15 min. Furthermore, SPM maintained its structural integrity and propulsion performance (776.1 μm/s) even after multiple cycles, making it suitable for various microenvironments. Finally, the novel degradation route for BPA was proposed and verified. And also, its environmental applicability, universality in degradation, environmental toxicity, and stability through experimental design. In summary, we explored a pioneering approach to constructing a self-propelled microreactor capable of degrading low concentrations of PhPs, which afforded to practical applications in degradation of actual water matrices, as well as the potential environmental impacts were discussed.

Changes in the distribution of membranous organelles during mouse early development.

Abstract:The unfertilized oocyte, fertilized egg and early embryo (2-cell to 16-cell) of the mouse have been examined immunocytochemically for the distribution of antigens associated with the endoplasmic reticulum, the lysosomal and acidic vesicle fraction (100 kD antigen), Golgi apparatus (135 kD antigen) and coated vesicles (clathrin). The distribution of these antigens has also been examined in isolated 8-cell and 16-cell-stage blastomeres of various ages and phenotypes. Endoplasmic reticulum is detected only weakly in the oocyte and egg, but is seen abundantly at later stages both in association with the nuclear membrane and evenly distributed throughout the cytoplasm, except in regions of cell:cell apposition from which it is excluded. Intracellular clathrin is associated with the spindle in mitotic and meiotic cells. During interphase, clathrin is distributed throughout the cell until the mid-8-cell stage when it is concentrated into the apical region of the cell under the region of membrane at which a surface pole of microvilli will form subsequently. Thus, the cytoplasmic polarization of clathrin precedes overt polarization at the surface. At mitosis, the clathrin relocates to the spindle and is distributed to both daughter cells. It resumes an apical location beneath the surface pole of microvilli in polar daughter 1/16 cells, but remains dispersed in apolar daughter 1/16 cells. Both the lysosomal and Golgi antigens are distributed throughout the cytoplasm until the early 16-cell stage. In pairs of 16-cell blastomeres both antigens aggregate in a single cluster and do so whether the surface phenotype of the blastomeres is polar or apolar. The position of this cluster is not consistently related to the point of contact with the other cell in the pair but there is a suggestion that in cells with a polar surface phenotype the polar foci of Golgi/lysosomal antigens are located between the nucleus and the surface pole at earlier time points, but shift to a position between the basolateral membrane and the nucleus at the later time point. In intact 16-cell embryos also, the aggregated Golgi/lysosomal antigens of polar cells appear to localize to the basal region. The distributions of these various organelles in embryonic cells reported here show a number of differences from those reported previously for mature, differentiated cells.

Abstract:Y Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) are an environmentally friendly and cost-effective in situ remediation technology that have been used to restore polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated groundwater. However, the understanding of removal mechanisms of the pollutant from groundwater remains a challenge due to the complex interactions between microbial evolution, organic carbon kinetics, and multiple chemical reactions. In this study, a one-dimensional reactive transport model was developed to study 450-day column experiments for removal of phenanthrene from groundwater using new PRB materials A (including wheat straw) and B (including coconut shell biochar). The modeling results provided a deeper understanding of the removal process for phenanthrene, and showed that Material B had a higher removal efficiency than Material A over 34 days. The removal efficiency of phenanthrene in both Materials A and B was close to 100% in the PRB system. This was because (1) Material B had a higher adsorption capacity for phenanthrene than Material A, and adsorption played an important role in the short term (e.g., 20 days), whereas biodegradation controlled longer-term removal processes; (2) the biomass in Column B was higher (p < 0.05) than that in Column A; and (3) Column B had a higher microbial yield coefficient that could favor longer-term microbial growth and biodegradation activity. Material B might have greater potential than Material A for longer-term remediation performance. The simulated results generally were in agreement with the experimental results and support the development of field-scale pilot testing of these materials for groundwater remediation. A novel remediation strategy of mixed calcium peroxide and degrading bacteria for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contaminated water

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of toxic organic pollutants commonly detected in the aqueous phase. Traditional biodegradation is inefficient and advanced oxidation technologies are expensive. In the current study, a novel strategy was developed using calcium peroxide (CP) and PAH-degrading bacteria (PDB) to effectively augment PAH degradation by 28.62-59.22%. The PDB consisted of the genera Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, and Comamonas. Applying the response surface model (RSM), the most appropriate parameters were identified, and the predictive degradation rates of phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr), and ΣPAHs were 98%, 76%, and 84%, respectively. The constructed mixed system could reduce 90% of Phe and more than 60% of ΣPAHs and will perform better at pH 5-7 and lower salinity. Because PAHs tend to bind to dissolved organic matter (DOM) with larger molecular weights, humic acid (HA) had a larger negative effect on the PAH-degradation efficiency of the CP-PDB mixed system than fulvic acid (FA). The proposed PAH-degradation pathways in the mixed system were based on the detection of intermediates at different times. The investigation constructed and optimized a novel environmental PAH-degradation strategy. The synergistic application of PDB and oxidation was extended for organic contaminant degradation in aqueous environments.

High performance removal of chlorophenols from an aqueous solution using an enzymatic membrane bioreactor

Abstract:Organochlorides and particularly chlorophenols are environmental pollutants that deserve special attention. Enzymatic membrane bioreactors may be alternatives for efficiently removing such hazardous organochlorides from aqueous solutions. We propose here a novel enzymatic membrane bioreactor comprising an ultrafiltration membrane GR81PP, electrospun fibers made of cellulose acetate, and laccase immobilized using an incubation and a fouling approach. Configurations of this biosystem exhibiting the highest catalytic activity were selected for removal of 2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol from aqueous solution in an enzymatic membrane bioreactor under various process conditions. The highest removal of chlorophenols, at 88% and 74% for 2-chlorophenol and 4-chlorophenol, respectively, occurred at pH 5 and 30 °C in the GR81PP/cellulose acetate/laccase biosystem with enzyme immobilized by the fouling method. Furthermore, the GR81PP/cellulose acetate/laccase biosystem with enzyme immobilized by the fouling method exhibited significant reusability and storage stability compared with the biosystem with laccase immobilized by the incubation method. The mechanism of enzyme immobilization is based on pore blocking and cake-layer formation, while the mechanism of chlorophenols removal was identified as a synergistic combination of membrane separation and enzymatic conversion. The importance of the conducted research is due to efficient removal of hazardous organochlorides using a novel enzymatic membrane bioreactor. The study demonstrates the biosystem's high catalytic activity, reusability, and stability, offering a promising solution for environmental pollution control.

Abstract:In 130 patients with no cardiac or pulmonary disease at the time of elective upper abdominal surgery, chest radiography was performed 2 and 4 days postoperatively. The sputum was examined and the patients were monitored with measurement of body temperature, arterial oxygen tension and white blood counts. Pneumonic infiltrates appeared in 8.4% of the patients and atelectasis in 68.5%. Most of the patients had elevated body temperature, raised white blood count and reduced arterial oxygen tension postoperatively. Study on Biodegradation Characteristics of Industrial Phenol-Containing Wastewater by Biological Co-Metabolism Technology

Abstract:Biological co-metabolism is an economical and efficient technique for treating refractory organic matter, and in recent years, it has been widely used in the treatment of chlorophenol-containing wastewater. It has been found that many conditions affect the bio co-metabolism efficiency, such as the carbon source type, carbon source content, microorganism types, and environmental factors. The carbon source concentration experiment showed that when the dosage ratio of sodium acetate to black aniline powder was 1:2, the degradation rate of black aniline powder was 82%, and the removal rate was 92.9%. When tetrachlorophenol increased from 210 mg/L to 2100 mg/L, the tetrachlorophenol was increased in the effluent, and the microorganism's activity was inhibited. Besides, the sedimentation performance of activated sludge was also damaged. The temperature test showed that the removed 4-chlorophenol was as high as 2100 mg/L at 35 °C, and the apparent 4-chlorophenol residue in the effluent could be detected at 20 °C. Therefore, by appropriately controlling the external operating conditions of the reactor, the co-metabolism of refractory organic such as chlorophenols can be achieved.
A robust biocatalyst based on laccase immobilized superparamagnetic Fe3O4@SiO2–NH2 nanoparticles and its application for degradation of chlorophenols

Abstract:The presence of chlorophenols in water and wastewater is considered a serious environmental issue. To eliminate these micropollutants, biodegradation of chlorophenols using enzyme-nanoparticle conjugated biocatalyst, is proposed as an economical and eco-friendly method. Herein, amino-functionalized superparamagnetic Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2 nanoparticles with core-shell structure were constructed as a promising carrier for immobilization of laccase from Trametes versicolor. Compared with free laccase, Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-Laccase displayed remarkable outcomes in all major areas such as temperature and storage stabilities, and tolerance to organic solvents and metal ions. The biocatalytic performance and reusability of Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-Laccase were evaluated for the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) in repeated cycles. Even after 10 successive reuses, the degradation rate of 2,4-DCP and 2,4,6-TCP were found to be 54.9% and 68.7%, respectively. The influences of solution pH, initial chlorophenol concentration, and temperature on the degradation rate of these two chlorophenols were evaluated. The degradation intermediate products including dimers, trimers, and tetramers of 2,4-DCP and 2,4,6-TCP were identified. Release of chloride ions was observed during the enzymatic degradation of these two chlorophenols. Based on the determination of intermediate products and released chloride ions, the degradation pathway that was involved in dehydrogenation, reactive radical intermediates formation, dechlorination, self-coupling and oligomers/polymers formation was proposed. The toxicity of these two chlorophenols and their intermediates was substantially reduced during the enzymatic degradation. The results of this study might present an alternative clean biotechnology for the remediation of 2,4-DCP and 2,4,6-TCP contaminated water matrices.

Abstract:Huge amounts of noxious chemicals from coal and petrochemical refineries and pharmaceutical industries are released into water bodies. These chemicals are highly toxic and cause adverse effects on both aquatic and terrestrial life. The removal of hazardous contaminants from industrial effluents is expensive and environmentally driven. The majority of the technologies applied nowadays for the removal of phenols and other contaminants are based on physio-chemical processes such as solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and adsorption. The removal efficiency of toxic chemicals, especially phenols, is low with these technologies when the concentrations are very low. Furthermore, the major drawbacks of these technologies are the high operation costs and inadequate selectivity. To overcome these limitations, researchers are applying biological and membrane technologies together, which are gaining more attention because of their ease of use, high selectivity, and effectiveness. In the present review, the microbial degradation of phenolics in combination with intensified membrane bioreactors (MBRs) has been discussed. Important factors, including the origin and mode of phenols' biodegradation as well as the characteristics of the membrane bioreactors for the optimal removal of phenolic contaminants from industrial effluents are considered. The modifications of MBRs for the removal of phenols from various wastewater sources have also been addressed in this review article. The economic analysis on the cost and benefits of MBR technology compared with conventional wastewater treatments is discussed extensively.

Abstract:In this study, a novel and efficient phenol-degrading microbial consortium HQ-01 was enriched from lake bottom sediments under aerobic conditions. The degradation efficiency, the effect of temperature and initial concentration of biodegraded phenol were investigated. The results showed that the HQ-01 could completely degrade 1500 mg l −1 phenol at 16 h and 2500 mg l −1 at 24 h and an average degradation rate of up to 100 mg l −1 h −1 . Prominently, microbial consortium could adapt to temperature which completely removed phenol at 2000 mg l −1 in the temperature range of 22–42 °C. While the ability of the HQ-01 was not affected by temperature at 28–37 °C. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that microbial consortium self-regulated by increasing or decreasing the proportion of Bacillus and Brevibacillus to respond to the change of phenol concentrations and maintain a stable core microbial structure. Picrust2 predicted that, through self-regulation, the microbial consortium enhanced carbon metabolism and membrane transport capacity in response to changes in phenol concentration. Gas phase mass spectrometry results revealed that the microbial consortium HQ-01 produced large amounts of glycine and palmitate surfactants, which protected the microorganisms and sped up metabolism. In addition, the toxicity of the compounds was reduced by 56 % after degradation. In summary, a microbial consortium with extremely high phenol degradation efficiency was obtained and could cope with changes in temperature and phenol concentration. This work can provide a promising method for the treatment of high-concentration phenolic wastewater that is difficult to degrade in outdoor facilities with large temperature differences.

Abstract:Membrane contactor, an evolving device has the potential to simplify mass transfer between two contacting phases because of the inherent features including non-dispersion of the phases, operational safety, simplicity of operation and easy adaptability. Solvent extraction, a proven and useful separation operation conventionally, has many practical challenges. Membrane assisted solvent extraction could not progress due to the compatibility of shell material of the hollow fiber membrane element with aggressive solvents. Considering that the membrane polymers are resistant to many solvents, experiments were carried out by allowing the passage of solvent through the tube side and aqueous phase through the shell side. Hence, experimental investigations were undertaken to establish the potential of membrane assisted solvent extraction using polyvinylidene fluoride-based hollow fiber membrane with phenol as a model contaminant in the aqueous phase and 1-hexanol as a solvent for the organic phase. A comparative assessment of the conventional vs. membrane assisted solvent extraction indicated that the percent removal of phenol is relatively higher for the latter. No deterioration of shell material or the membrane is observed with the solvent flowing through the tube side. Additional features such as the possibility of seamless recycling of solvent, safe operation, and easy scale-up, indicate the potential of membrane-assisted solvent extraction for the recovery of contaminants from waste streams. With an estimated mass transfer coefficient of around 1.2–1.3 × 10–7 m/s both for extraction and stripping indicated that pore diffusion of phenol to be the rate-controlling step.
