Abstract:The aim of the paper is to develop a general theory of solvability of linear inhomogeneous boundary-value problems for systems of ordinary differential equations of arbitrary order in Sobolev spaces. Boundary conditions are allowed to be overdetermined or underdetermined. They may contain derivatives, of the unknown vector-valued function, whose integer or fractional orders exceed the order of the differential equation. Similar problems arise naturally in various applications. The theory introduces the notion of a rectangular number characteristic matrix of the problem. The index and Fredholm numbers of this matrix coincide, respectively, with the index and Fredholm numbers of the inhomogeneous boundary-value problem. Unlike the index, the Fredholm numbers (i.e., the dimensions of the problem kernel and co-kernel) are unstable even with respect to small (in the norm) finite-dimensional perturbations. We give examples in which the characteristic matrix can be explicitly found. We also prove a limit theorem for a sequence of characteristic matrices. Specifically, it follows from this theorem that the Fredholm numbers of the problems under investigation are semicontinuous in the strong operator topology. Such a property ceases to be valid in the general case.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the solvability problem of linear non - homogeneous boundary value problems in Sobolev spaces. Specifically, the paper studies the solvability of systems of ordinary differential equations of arbitrary order under general non - homogeneous boundary conditions in Sobolev spaces. The boundary conditions can be over - determined or under - determined, and may contain derivatives of the unknown vector function, whose integer or fractional order exceeds the order of the differential equation. ### Main research problems: 1. **Development of solvability theory**: The goal of the paper is to develop a general theory of solvability for linear non - homogeneous boundary value problems in Sobolev spaces. 2. **Introduction of characteristic matrices**: The paper introduces the concept of a rectangular - number characteristic matrix, whose index and Fredholm number are respectively consistent with the index and Fredholm number of the non - homogeneous boundary value problem. 3. **Stability of Fredholm numbers**: The paper points out that, unlike the index, the Fredholm number (i.e., the dimensions of the problem kernel and co - kernel) is unstable even for small finite - dimensional perturbations. 4. **Limit theorem**: The paper proves a limit theorem for a sequence of characteristic matrices, showing that the Fredholm number of the studied problem is semi - continuous in the strong operator topology. ### Specific problem description: - **Equation form**: Consider the following linear non - homogeneous boundary value problem: \[ (Ly)(t): = y^{(r)}(t)+\sum_{j = 1}^r A_{r - j}(t)y^{(r - j)}(t)=f(t),\quad t\in(a,b) \] The boundary condition is: \[ By = c \] where \(A_{r - j}(t)\) is a matrix - valued function, \(f(t)\) is a vector - valued function, and \(B\) is a linear continuous operator from \((W^{n + r}_p)^m\) to \(\mathbb{C}^l\). - **Sobolev space**: The paper uses the Sobolev space \(W^{n + r}_p\), where \(n,r,l\in\mathbb{N}\), \(1\leq p\leq\infty\). - **Characteristic matrix**: The paper defines a rectangular - number characteristic matrix \(M(L,B)\) and proves that the Fredholm number of this matrix is consistent with the Fredholm number of the boundary value problem. ### Main results: 1. **Fredholm property**: It is proved that the boundary value problem \((L,B)\) is a Fredholm operator with an index of \(rm - l\). 2. **Construction of characteristic matrices**: A specific construction method for the characteristic matrix is given, and it is proved that the Fredholm number of the characteristic matrix is consistent with the Fredholm number of the boundary value problem. 3. **Limit theorem**: A limit theorem for a sequence of characteristic matrices is proved, showing that the Fredholm number is semi - continuous in the strong operator topology. ### Application background: - **Mathematical models**: Such problems occur naturally in certain mathematical models, for example, in the spectral theory of differential operators with distributed coefficients. - **Multi - point boundary value problems**: The results of the paper are applied to the study of multi - point boundary value problems. Through these studies, the paper provides a systematic theoretical framework and tools for understanding and solving linear non - homogeneous boundary value problems.
