Abstract:We study a general discrete boundary value problem in Sobolev--Slobodetskii spaces in a plane quadrant and reduce it to a system of integral equations. We show a solvability of the system for a small size of discreteness starting from a solvability of its continuous analogue.

Abstract:We consider discrete analogue of model pseudo-differential equations in discrete plane sector using discrete variant of Sobolev--Slobodetskii spaces. Starting from the concept of wave factorization for elliptic periodic symbol we describe solvability conditions for the equations and corresponding discrete boundary value problems. We give also a comparison between discrete and continuous solutions in appropriate discrete normed spaces.

Abstract:Initial-boundary value problems are considered for homogeneous parabolic systems with Dini-continuous coefficients and zero initial conditions in a semibounded plane domain with a nonsmooth lateral boundary admitting cusps, on which general boundary conditions with variable coefficients are given. A theorem on unique classical solvability of these problems in the space of functions that are continuous and bounded together with their first spatial derivatives in the closure of the domain is proved by applying the boundary integral equation method. A representation of the resulting solutions in the form of vector single-layer potentials is given.

Abstract:The aim of the paper is to develop a general theory of solvability of linear inhomogeneous boundary-value problems for systems of ordinary differential equations of arbitrary order in Sobolev spaces. Boundary conditions are allowed to be overdetermined or underdetermined. They may contain derivatives, of the unknown vector-valued function, whose integer or fractional orders exceed the order of the differential equation. Similar problems arise naturally in various applications. The theory introduces the notion of a rectangular number characteristic matrix of the problem. The index and Fredholm numbers of this matrix coincide, respectively, with the index and Fredholm numbers of the inhomogeneous boundary-value problem. Unlike the index, the Fredholm numbers (i.e., the dimensions of the problem kernel and co-kernel) are unstable even with respect to small (in the norm) finite-dimensional perturbations. We give examples in which the characteristic matrix can be explicitly found. We also prove a limit theorem for a sequence of characteristic matrices. Specifically, it follows from this theorem that the Fredholm numbers of the problems under investigation are semicontinuous in the strong operator topology. Such a property ceases to be valid in the general case.

Abstract:We study linear systems of ordinary differential equations of an arbitrary order on a finite interval with the most general (generic) inhomogeneous boundary conditions in Sobolev spaces. We investigate the character of solvability of inhomogeneous boundary-value problems, prove their Fredholm properties, and find the indices, the dimensions of the kernel, and the cokernel of these problems. Moreover, we obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for continuity in a parameter of solutions to the introduced problems in Sobolev spaces.

Abstract:We study the solvability of discrete elliptic pseudodifferential equations in a sector of the plane. Using special factorization of the symbol, the problem is reduced to a boundary value problem for analytic functions of two variables. A periodic analog of one integral transformation is obtained that was used to construct solutions of elliptic pseudodifferential equations in conical domains. The formula for the general solution of the discrete equation under consideration and some boundary value problems are described in terms of this transformation.

Abstract:We investigate an arbitrary regular elliptic boundary-value problem given in a bounded Euclidean domain with infinitely smooth boundary. We prove that the operator of the problem is bounded and Fredholm in appropriate pairs of Hörmander inner product spaces. They are parametrized with the help of an arbitrary radial function RO-varying at infinity and form the extended Sobolev scale. We establish a priori estimates for solutions to the problem and investigate their local regularity on this scale. We find new sufficient conditions for generalized partial derivatives of the solutions to be continuous.

Abstract:The method is proposed for the study of many-point boundary value problems for systems of nonlinear ODE, by reducing them to special equivalent integral equations, and allows us [in contrast with the known method [1]] to consider boundary and initial value problems. Here we avoid the mechanism of Green's function whose construction is quite nontrivial, especially in case of many-point boundary value problems. The proposed algorithm [2, 3] makes it easier to write out the condition of unique solvability of such problems. Abstract:We consider initial–boundary value problems for homogeneous parabolic systems with coefficients satisfying the double Dini condition with zero initial conditions in a semibounded plane domain with nonsmooth lateral boundary. The method of boundary integral equations is used to prove a theorem on the unique classical solvability of such problems in the space of functions that are continuous together with their first spatial derivative in the closure of the domain. An integral representation of the obtained solutions is given. It is shown that the condition for the solvability of the posed problems considered in the paper is equivalent to the well-known complementarity condition.

Abstract:We consider a special boundary value problem in the Sobolev–Slobodetskii space for a model elliptic pseudodifferential equation in a multidimensional cone. Taking into account the special factorization of the elliptic symbol, we write the general solution of the pseudodifferential equation that contains an arbitrary function. To determine it unambiguously, some integral condition is added to the equation, which makes it possible to write the solution in Fourier transforms.

Abstract:For a class of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations of high order in a cylindrical domain the following boundary value problem is considered: Cauchy-type conditions are prescribed on the upper and lower bases of the cylinder, and a Robin-type condition is prescribed on the lateral part of the boundary. This boundary value problem is reduced in an equivalent way to a nonlinear functional equation in a certain subspace of the Sobolev space. Under certain assumptions about the nonlinear terms an a priori estimate is obtained for the solution of the problem in question and the existence of the solution is established, while in the case when these conditions fail, the absence of a solution is established. The question of uniqueness is also discussed for the solution. Bibliography: 18 titles.

Abstract:An initial–boundary value problem for a singularly perturbed system of partial differential equations is considered. An inverse problem is formulated that consists in determining the unknown boundary condition based on one of the components of the solution given at a fixed point in space. Methods for the approximate solution of the inverse problem based on the use of small parameter expansion of the solution of the initial–boundary value problem are proposed. Estimates of the accuracy of approximate solutions are obtained. The results of numerical calculations illustrating the accuracy of the proposed methods are presented.

Abstract:We investigate the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary value problems for the Laplace-Beltrami equation on a smooth hypersurface $\mathcal{C}$ with the smooth boundary in non-classical setting in the Bessel potential spaces $\mathbb{H}^1_p(\mathcal{C})$ for $1<p<\infty$. To the initial BVP we apply quasilocalization and obtain model BVPs for the Laplacian. The model mixed BVP on the half plane is investigated by potential method and is reduced to an equivalent system of Mellin convolution equations in Bessel potential and Besov spaces. The symbol of the obtained system is written explicitly, which provides Fredholm properties and the index of the system. The unique solvability criteria for the initial mixed BVP in the non-classical setting is derived.

Abstract:This paper deals with a boundary value problem of a fractional differential equation with the nonlinear term dependent on a fractional derivative of lower order on the semi-infinite interval. An appropriate compactness criterion is established, such that we can use Schauder's fixed point theorem on an unbounded domain to obtain the existence result for solutions. Moreover, a suitable choice of a Banach space allows the solutions to be unbounded. An example illustrating our main result is also given.

Abstract:In this paper a lower bound for solutions to the secular equation of the Schrödinger equation with basis functions discontinuous on boundaries of divided regions is given. If the functions do not have the discontinuity, the bound reduces to that for the usual Rayleigh-Ritz method. Difference from the usual Rayleigh-Ritz method is bounded by the degree of discontinuity. The result can be regarded as a theoretical basis of the augmented plane wave method for the band structure calculations in solid state physics. The result would be useful also for other electronic eigenvalue problems in which the behavior of the eigenfunction near nuclei is very different from that in the interstitial region, because it allows us to use different basis functions in different regions in contrast with the usual Rayleigh-Ritz method in which we need to use basis functions with inappropriate behaviors in wide regions. The proof is based only on new general results about the Sobolev space, in particular, equivalence of two semi-norms concerned with discontinuity of the functions in a direct sum of the Sobolev spaces. Therefore, the result does not depend on specific forms of basis functions at all. The main ingredient of the proof is an estimate of elements of the orthogonal complement of $H^1_0(\Omega)$ by their boundary values based on a characterization of them as weak solutions to an elliptic equation on a region $\Omega$.

Sobolev space theory for the heat and time-fractional heat equations in non-smooth domains

Abstract:We present a general $L_p$-solvability result for the classical heat equation and time-fractional heat equations in non-smooth domains with the zero Dirichlet boundary condition. We consider domains $\Omega$ admitting the Hardy inequality: There exists a constant $N>0$ such that $$ \int_{\Omega}\Big|\frac{f(x)}{d(x,\partial\Omega)}\Big|^2\mathrm{d}x\leq N\int_{\Omega}|\nabla f|^2 \mathrm{d} x\quad\text{for any}\quad f\in C_c^{\infty}(\Omega)\,. $$ To illustrate the boundary behavior of solutions in a general framework, we employ a weight system composed of a superharmonic function and a distance function to the boundary. Further, we investigate applications for various non-smooth domains, including convex domains, domains with exterior cone condition, totally vanishing exterior Reifenberg domains, and domains $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ for which the Aikawa dimension of $\Omega^c$ is less than $d-2$. By using superharmonic functions tailored to the geometric conditions of the domain, we derive weighted $L_p$-solvability results for various non-smooth domains, with specific weight ranges that vary by domain condition. In addition, we provide an application for the Hölder continuity of solutions in domains with the volume density condition, and a pointwise estimate for solutions in Lipschitz cones.
