Abstract:An ultra-high sensitive distributed microstructured optical fiber (DMOF) acoustic sensor based on coherent OTDR demodulation method and hollow cylinder transducer is presented. As a consecutive longitudinal microstructured optical fiber, the DMOF contains backscattering enhanced points which greatly improved the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the acoustic sensing signal. Based on coherent OTDR demodulation method, the amount of phase change caused by sound pressure can be directly obtained. In order to increase the phase sensitivity, sensing fiber between two backscattering enhanced points along the DMOF is wrapped on a hollow cylinder transducer as an acoustic sensing unit. Finally, experiments on detecting sound waves in air are carried out. The results demonstrate that our fiber acoustic sensor has a flat sensitivity frequency response from 500Hz to 5kHz with a phase sensitivity of around -112dB(re rad/μPa) and a peak sensitivity of -83.7dB at 80Hz. It is noteworthy that the sensing mechanism based on the DMOF can be further extended to distributed acoustic sensing.

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensors provide a powerful instrumentation for ultrasound testing to identify the internal crack and deformation with the location for assessing structural conditions and predicting the potential structural failure. This paper provides a tutorial review of the milestones leading to the development of the distributed acoustic sensor based on Rayleigh back scattering. It offers discussion on basic principles, optical configurations and system design requirement, various detection schemes, performance limitations and applications for the maximum measurable frequency, minimum detectable strain and highest spatial resolution. A final comment on the prospects of the further developments is presented.

Ultrasonic optical fiber sensing for composite structural health monitoring

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating has been widely used as a sensor for detecting static quantities such as strain and temperature, but it is still difficult to detect ultrasonic guided waves due to the limitation of sensitivity and bandwidth. By comparing the traditional fiber Bragg grating and the phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PSFBG), it was found that the latter has a shorter and effective grating length and steeper slope. Thus, the PSFBG can greatly improve bandwidth and sensitivity, which is suitable for the detection of ultrasonic Lamb waves. Furthermore, a high-speed demodulator and a feedback controller were designed and integrated with the PSFBG to reduce the noise and enhance the robustness of the sensing system. The excellent performance of the PSFBG-based system is demonstrated in linear and nonlinear acousto-ultrasonic detection, and acoustic emission detection, by comparing with the PZT sensors.

Abstract:The optical fiber acoustic sensing system is suitable for long-distance monitoring of the acoustic signals generated by the external disturbances. According to the continuity of sensing units, quasi-distributed and distributed optical fiber acoustic sensing technologies are differentiated to meet different application requirements. On the one hand, the recent progress of Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) focusing on the diaphragm material, and the research hotspots in the field of the continuous Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array are firstly reviewed. On the other hand, Mach-Zehnder interferometry (MZI), Michelson interferometry (MI), and Sagnac interferometry (SI) have rapidly developed in the aspect of the demodulation algorithm optimization with the purpose of the sensing performance improvement. Moreover, the current primary research works of the phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer ( $varphi $ -OTDR) are the signal-to-noise ratio improvement and the mixed optical structure design. Finally, this paper presents an overview of the recent advances of optical fiber acoustic sensing system in the application domains of military defense, structural health monitoring, petroleum exploration, and development.

Abstract:Lamb-wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) has attracted extensive attention in recent years. This article aims to realize the functions of data communication, defect detection, and energy transmission through piezoelectric transducers. In this work, the S0 mode at 500 kHz and the A0 mode at 150 kHz are selected as the carrier waves and the optimized excitation frequencies are determined through analytical investigation and frequency sweeping experiments. The S0 mode is used for data communication and defect inspection due to the high excitation frequency and low dispersion properties. A single piezoelectric sensing element acts as the transmitter and a nine-element piezoelectric transducer array (PTA) is the receiver. Their roles exchange in terms of energy transmission based on the A0 mode. Simultaneous data communication and energy transmission are achieved based on the frequency division multiplexing (FDM) strategy. After performing a matched filter on the received signals, the digital data information can be recovered under the interference of the energy transmission signal. The synthetic aperture imaging technology (SAFT) is adopted for accurately locating defects on aluminum plates. In terms of energy transmission, a constructive interference performance is achieved by the transducer array with a transmitted power of 3.81 mW. This system has great potential for health monitoring of the enclosed structure by eliminating the cumbersome wires for powering and communication.

Abstract:A Lamb wave is a guided wave that propagates within plate-like structures, with its vibration mode resulting from the coupling of a longitudinal wave and a shear vertical wave, which can be applied in sensors, filters, and frequency control devices. The working principle of Lamb wave sensors relies on the excitation and propagation of this guided wave within piezoelectric material. Lamb wave sensors exhibit significant advantages in various sensing applications due to their unique wave characteristics and design flexibility. Compared to traditional surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) sensors, Lamb wave sensors can not only achieve higher frequencies and quality factors in smaller dimensions but also exhibit superior integration and multifunctionality. In this paper, we briefly introduce Lamb wave sensors, summarizing methods for enhancing their sensitivity through optimizing electrode configurations and adjusting piezoelectric thin plate structures. Furthermore, this paper systematically explores the development of Lamb wave sensors in various sensing applications and provides new insights into their future development.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Lamb waves have been proved to be a potentially desirable method for quick interrogation of large plate structures. Integrating fiber optic sensors offer great potential to monitor large areas due to their geometric flexibility. To date this potential has not been widely exploited and there have been only a few reports of non-destructive testing with integrating fiber optic sensors. In this report we present our preliminary measurements for the interrogation of hole defects in plate-like materials with surface-bonded integrating fiber optic sensors. Due to the signal integrating characteristics of fiber sensors very complicated signals were obtained. Therefore signal processing is needed to interpret waveforms for flaw detection.

Abstract:A thin-walled microsphere-type Fabry-Perot interference (TWMT-FPI) fiber optic sensor was proposed, and it could be constructed by stretching to break a simple Fabry-Perot interferometer made by single-mode fiber(SMF) and hollow-core fiber(HCF) to form a conical cavity structure(CCS) and discharging CCS multiple times in fiber fusion machine. The sensing principle of the proposed structure was studied theoretically, and its ultrasonic response characteristics were investigated by experiments. The experimental results show that the structure is not only capable of effectively detecting continuous and pulsed ultrasound signals in solids but also has a wide frequency response range from 300 kHz to 3 MHz. For continuous and pulsed ultrasound signals of 2MHz, the signal-to-noise ratios(SNR) of the structure are as high as 66.5dB and 67.6dB, which can be improved by gold plating of the structure.

Abstract:Abstract Acoustic/ultrasonic sensors are devices that can convert mechanical energy into electrical signals. The Fabry–Perot cavity is processed on the end face of the double-clad fiber by a two-photon three-dimensional lithography machine. In this study, the outer diameter of the core cladding was 250 μm, the diameter of the core was 9 μm, and the microcavity sensing unit was only 30 μm. It could measure ultrasonic signals with high precision. The characteristics of the proposed ultrasonic sensor were investigated, and its feasibility was proven through experiments. Its design has a small size and can replace a larger ultrasonic detector device for photoacoustic signal detection. The sensor is applicable to the field of biomedical information technology, including medical diagnosis, photoacoustic endoscopy, and photoacoustic imaging.

Abstract:A broadband fiber-optic acoustic sensing system is proposed and demonstrated, which is configured by a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser. As the acoustic waves can shift the FBG reflective spectrum, the wavelength of the laser output shifts accordingly and this shift is subsequently converted into a corresponding phase shift and demodulated by an unbalanced fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The sensitivity of the presented sensing system is also investigated, which is a function of the optical path difference of the MZI and the linewidth of the FBG. Due to the adaptability and high sensitivity of the system, it can detect signals with frequencies from tens of hertz to hundreds of kilohertz, which shows the potential for acoustic emission detection in real applications.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Lamb waves have been proved useful for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) due to their abilities to propagate a long distance with less energy loss as well as their high sensitivity to small defects on the surface or inside the structure. However, there are still many challenging tasks for Lamb wave based NDE due to the complexity involved with Lamb waves propagation and the complexity caused by coupling layer used in traditional contact-type transducers. This paper established a fully non-contact Lamb wave NDE system by using a non-contact air-coupled transducer (ACT) which can eliminate the need for couplant/adhesive and actuate pure fundamental A0 mode Lamb wave; and a non-contact scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV) for sensing which can provide high spatial resolution wavefield data. Through ACT, pure A0 mode was actuated at selected ACT incident angle based on Snell’s law. By SLDV sensing, multi-dimensional wavefields for one-dimensional or two-dimensional wave propagation were obtained and further used for Lamb waves’ characterization analysis. A specimen with a through-thickness crack was manufactured and adopted to evaluate the inspection capability of the ACT-SLDV system. Waves with normal incident and aligned incident w.r.t the longitudinal dimension of the crack were investigated, and our results showed that cracks were detected successfully in both cases. Moreover, crack lengths can be quantitatively evaluated for both situations with 10% error.

Abstract:The spatially resolved interrogation of a Fabry–Perot ultrasound sensor using a laser beam focused through a multimode fiber is demonstrated. To scan the beam across the sensor as required to read it out, optical wavefront shaping was employed to compensate for the scrambling of light in the fiber. By providing a means to map ultrasound through inexpensive, lightweight fibers, this could lead to new ultrasonic and photoacoustic imaging systems, such as endoscopes and flexible handheld probes.

Abstract:A compact optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer is proposed and demonstrated for ultrasound wave (UW) measurement. The sensor consists of a suspended cantilever in a sealed hollow-core fiber, while the end-face of the leading-in fiber together with the end-face of the suspended fiber act as two reflection mirrors and form an air cavity. A short section of graded index fiber is also employed as a micro-lens to improve the fringe contrast of the interference spectral pattern. Due to the suspended fiber structure, the sensor presents high sensitivity to UW loading, which allows the freely suspended fiber to be stretched and compressed easily. By spectral side-band filtering technology, a simple intensity interrogation technology is used for UW demonstration. Moreover, the sealed sensor structure avoids disturbance from other environment parameters, thus presenting good stability for UW detection.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Lamb wave is a promising tool for structural health monitoring and nondestructive evaluation of plate-like structures. Using an array with several piezoelectric discs for damage imaging (i.e. visual detection and localization) is of interest. Commonly used delay-and-sum method is limited for overlapped signals when several damages are closely distributed in the structure. To overcome this limitation, modal-based sparse reconstruction imaging method is applied for adjacent damages in this study. Firstly, Lamb wave dispersion curve is obtained by solving the Rayleigh-Lamb equations. Subsequently, propagation modal of the damage-reflected signal is constructed based on the solved dispersion curve. Finally, the modal is used for damage imaging via sparse reconstruction and basis pursuit de-noising. Experimental data measured in an aluminum plate is considered, and the result demonstrates that the sparse reconstruction imaging method is effective to detect and localize closely distributed damages in the presence of signal overlapping.
