Abstract:Developing effective carbon materials for post-combustion CO(2)capture (PCC) has received great attentions over many recent years, owing to their desirable adsorption-desorption performance and exceptional thermo-oxidative stability compared to virtually any other capture materials typically the wide array of amine-based sorbent materials. However, due to the nature of physical adsorption, virtually none of the carbon materials reported so far can be practically used for PCC applications without deep flue gas cooling to ambient or even lower temperatures in order to achieve appreciable levels of CO(2)uptake capacities at low CO(2)partial pressures. Here, we present a category of 3D hierarchical molecular sieving carbon architectures that are able to operate at realistic flue gas temperatures with exceedingly high reversible CO(2)capacities. The breakthrough CO2-sieving carbon materials are prepared from using a cost-effective and commercially widely available precursor of polymeric polyisocyanurates with a facile one-step compaction-activation methodology. Tested at sensible flue gas temperatures of 40-70 degrees C and a low CO(2)partial pressure of 0.15 bar, the best performing materials are found to have exceedingly high reversible CO(2)capacities of up to 2.30 mmol g(-1)at 40 degrees C and 1.90 mmol g(-1)at 70 degrees C. Advanced characterisations suggest that the unique geometry and chemistry of the easily available precursor material coupled with the characteristics of the compaction-activation protocol used are responsible for the CO2-sieving structures and capacities of the 3D carbon architectures. The findings essentially change the general perception that carbon-based materials can hardly find applications in post-combustion capture due to their low CO(2)uptake capacity at low CO(2)partial pressures and realistic flue gas temperatures.
Facile Synthesis of MOF-5-derived Porous Carbon with Adjustable Pore Size for CO2 Capture

Abstract:In this study, a facile strategy is reported for the preparation of porous carbon materials with adjustable pore size through carbonization of MOF-5 at 900 degrees C with the assistance of different additives. Results show that the physical and chemical properties (such as morphology, carbon defect content, BET specific surface area, pore structure) of the porous carbon materials can be adjusted through introduction of different compounds (i.e., C16H32O2, C6H14O6, C18H36O2, Na2CO3, KOH, Cu(NO3)2, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, ethyl cellulose) during the carbon-ization processes. CO2 adsorption experiment results show that there is a linear relationship between the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) and the cumulative pore volume of pores at 5-7 angstrom, suggesting that pores in the range of 5-7 angstrom play a major role in CO2 adsorption at such condition. While the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) is independent on the BET specific surface area of the materials. Among the prepared porous carbon materials, 5C-C6H14O6-900 exhibits the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (i.e., 3.32 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 1 bar, 0.88 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar), with good adsorption/desorption cycle stability and CO2/N2 selectivity. Our work provides a facile and general method to adjust and control the pore size dis-tribution of MOF-derived porous carbon materials. Besides, the analysis results indicate that the micropores in a specific pore size range play a decisive role in the adsorption of CO2 at low pressure, which provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents at low pressures.

Abstract:In order to solve the environmental problems caused by greenhouse gas emissions, cellulosenanofiber (CNF)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/graphene oxide (GO) aerogel was obtained by step-by-step heating, tert-butanol replacement, freeze-drying, and high-temperature activation in this paper. The micromorphology, specific surface area, pore size distribution, and thermal stability of the prepared aerogels were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, automatic surface area and porosity analysis, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The interaction state and adsorption mechanism of CO2 and aerogel physical adsorption were described by Materials Studio simulation. The results showed that the adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. After carbonization, the thermal stability of the aerogel was good (mass loss rate <1%). With the increase of GO content, its specific surface area increased (392.41 m2/g) and CO2 adsorption capacity increased (432.76 cm3/g at 273 K). The simulation results show that hydrogen bond energy and van der Waals adsorption are the main factors that help in adsorption of CO2 on the surface aerogel, and electrostatic adsorption is the secondary adsorption factor. The application of green material carbon-based aerogels is also in line with the concept of sustainable development.

Abstract:The CO 2 capture by absorbent shows a great promise to remit the pressure of CO 2 discharge. The functionalization of N surfaces and the development of the surface area in activation modification have received a great deal of attention as important factors influencing CO 2 adsorption performance. However, the role of ultra-micropores in the capture by size matching of CO 2 by adjusting the CO 2 size and the absorbent pore structure has been less studied to some extent. The study provides a simple one-step chemical activation method, in which cotton fibers were utilized as biomass sources to construct ultra-microporous carbon absorbent with a simple and effective tunable pore structure by changing the alkali-carbon ratio and activation temperature. The series of samples both showed high CO 2 adsorption at normal pressure, in particular, the optimal sample CC2-800 affords 4.43 mmol g −1 CO 2 uptake at 298 K and 6.58 mmol g −1 CO 2 uptake at 273 K. Impressively, the optimal adsorbent was endowed with extremely low adsorption heat, thereby showing good reversibility and reusability during multiple-cycle tests at room temperature. By a comprehensive study of the structural characteristics of the adsorbent, this research further validates the significant role of ultra-micropores in CO 2 adsorption. Additionally, the simple one-step preparation process shows crucial significance for sustainable development and environmental friendliness, which provides some interesting insights for the design and development of ultra-microporous activated carbon.

Abstract:The ultralow atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 (similar to 40 Pa) presents a significant challenge for direct air capture (DAC). In this study, high-performance porous aerogel adsorbents are prepared using the unidirectional freezing-ice-templating method. The dispersion of the mixed solution is effectively improved by particle size modulation, and functionalized materials with abundant gas channels are constructed by the rapid cooling of liquid N-2. The adsorbents feature a cross-structure comprising monolayer active components and nanoscale layered carriers. The unique micro/mesoporous composite structure of the adsorbents facilitates gas-phase transport. When the functional group efficiency is increased by 5.8 times, the prepared adsorbents demonstrate excellent CO2 capture capacity (1.17 mmol/g and 148 mol/m(3)) and a low adsorption half-time (1.28 min). The unique cross-structure of the adsorbents renders them hydrophobic; thus, they show higher adsorption capacity at high humidity than other moisture swing adsorbents. At the molecular scale, quantum chemical calculations show that appropriate coordination between the active components and carriers enhance the water vapor hindering ability of the adsorbents. The developed aerogel adsorbents significantly expand the application scenarios for moisture swing adsorbents and enhance the efficiency of DAC.
Amine-impregnated porous carbon–silica sheets derived from vermiculite with superior adsorption capability and cyclic stability for CO 2 capture

Abstract:Amine-functionalized adsorbents have become one of the most promising capture technologies for greenhouse gas mitigation. However, developing cost-effective adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and superior cyclic stability via temperature swing adsorption remains difficult. Herein, sandwich-like polyethyleneimine (PEI)-impregnated porous carbon–silica sheets derived from vermiculite (AEVCP) adsorbents were successfully synthesized via porous carbon network confined within acid activated expanded vermiculite derived silica (AEV) sheets and interlayer amine-functionalization with PEI impregnation. The effect of adsorption temperature on CO 2 adsorption performances, adsorption/desorption kinetics and thermodynamics for AEVCP adsorbents were specifically discussed. The optimal AEVCP50 adsorbent possessed a large CO 2 uptake of 1.84 mmol/g at 75 °C in 60 vol% CO 2 /40 vol% N 2 and superior cyclic stability with 7.6 % decay after 10 cycles, due to the hierarchical porous structure and high thermal conductivity of porous carbon–silica sheets derived from vermiculite (AEVC) support. The unique sandwich-like features of AEVC support are favorable for the high amine loading, rapid CO 2 diffusion and efficient capture. The interlayer carbon implantation and amine-functionalization with strong interlayer spatial confinement effect, can suppress the formation of urea linkages, avoid the persistent over-heating and excess amine agglomeration, and enhance the gas diffusion and thermal transfer during the adsorption isobar process, which ultimately lead to superior adsorption capability and cyclic stability for CO 2 capture. This design approach of cost-effective adsorbents derived from natural minerals provides a new avenue for practical CO 2 capture and separation processes.

K2CO3-Impregnated Al/Si Aerogel Prepared by Ambient Pressure Drying for CO2 Capture: Synthesis, Characterization and Adsorption Characteristics.

Abstract:A new potassium-based adsorbent for CO2 capture with Al aerogel used as support is proposed in this work. The adsorbents with different surface modifiers (tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and trimethyl chlorosilane (TMCS)) and different K2CO3 loadings (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) were prepared by sol-gel and iso-volume impregnation processes with ambient pressure drying. The CO2 adsorption performance of the adsorbents were tested by a fixed-bed reactor, and their adsorption mechanisms were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics and the cycling performance were investigated. The results show that using TEOS to modify the wet gel can introduce SiO2 to increase the strength of the skeleton. On the basis of TEOS modification, TMCS can further modify –OH, thus effectively avoiding the destruction of aerogel structure during ambient drying and K2CO3 impregnation. In this work, the specific surface area and specific pore volume of Al aerogel modified by TEOS + TMCS are up to 635.32 cm2/g and 2.43 cm3/g, respectively. The aerogels without modification (Al-B), TEOS modification (Al/Si) and TEOS + TMCS modification (Al/Si-TMCS) showed the best CO2 adsorption performance at 20%, 30% and 30% K2CO3 loading, respectively. In particular, the CO2 adsorption capacity and K2CO3 utilization rate of Al/Si-TMCS-30K are as high as 2.36 mmol/g and 93.2% at 70 degrees Celsius (°C). Avrami’s fractional order kinetic model can well fit the CO2 adsorption process of potassium-based adsorbents. Al-B-20K has a higher apparent activation energy and a lower adsorption rate during the adsorption process. After 15 adsorption-regeneration cycles, Al/Si-TMCS-30K maintain a stable CO2 adsorption capacity and framework structure, while the microstructure of Al/Si-30K is destroyed, resulting in a decrease in its adsorption capacity by nearly 30%. This work provides key data for the application of Al aerogel in the field of potassium-based adsorbent for CO2 capture.

Abstract:Microcrystalline cellulose is used to prepare aminated cellulose aerogels. They exhibit a high CO2 uptake of 1.5 and 1.3 mmol g−1 at 0 and 25 °C at 1 bar, respectively, and of 0.29 mmol g−1 at 25 °C at ambient CO2 pressure of 0.4 mbar. It implies its potential use for both traditional point‐source capture and direct air capture. Given the substantial emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, there is a critical need for effective CO2 adsorbents at scale, ideally derived from abundant and sustainable natural resources. In this work, microcrystalline cellulose derived from cotton is used to fabricate cellulose aerogel as porous support via a NaOH/urea‐based dissolution and regeneration process, followed by surface modification with a series of amino silane coupling agents to produce aminated cellulose aerogel as CO2 adsorbent. The as‐synthesized optimal adsorbent exhibits a high CO2 sorption capacity of up to 1.5 and 1.3 mmol g−1 at 0 °C and 25 °C at 1 bar, respectively. Notably, in‐depth analysis shows that the adsorbent achieves an impressive capacity of CO2 uptake of 0.29 mmol g−1 at 25 °C at an exceptionally low CO2 pressure of 0.4 mbar, i.e., under ambient CO2 pressure. It implies its potential use as adsorbent both for the traditional point‐source capture and the direct air capture as an emerging negative emission technology. This study underscores the environmentally friendly, cost‐effective, and biosourced attributes of aminated cellulose aerogel as a compelling alternative for carbon capture, contributing to global initiatives combating CO2 emissions and stressing the key role of sustainable materials in tackling this global environmental challenge.

Abstract:Mitigating the effect of climate change toward a sustainable development is one of the main challenges of our century. The emission of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), is a leading cause of the global warming crisis. To address this issue, various sustainable strategies have been formulated for CO2 capture. Renewable nanocellulose aerogels have risen as a highly attractive candidate for CO2 capture thanks to their porous and surface-tunable nature. Nanocellulose offer distinctive characteristics, including significant aspect ratios, exceptional biodegradability, lightweight nature, and the ability for chemical modification due to the abundant presence of hydroxyl groups. In this review, recent research studies on nanocellulose-based aerogels designed for CO2 absorption have been highlighted. The state-of-the-art of nanocellulose-based aerogel has been thoroughly assessed, including their synthesis, drying methods, and characterization techniques. Additionally, discussions were held about the mechanisms of CO2 adsorption, the effects of the porous structure, surface functionalization, and experimental parameters. Ultimately, this synthesis review provides an overview of the achieved adsorption rates using nanocellulose-based aerogels and outlines potential improvements that could lead to optimal adsorption rates. Overall, this research holds significant promise for tackling the challenges of climate change and contributing to a more sustainable future.
Amino-modified biochar-silica hybrid aerogels with ordered pore structure templated by cellulose nanocrystals for highly efficient and selective CO 2 capture

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels are contributing to global climate change and ocean acidification, and the development of low-cost, highly efficient CO 2 capture adsorbents for the reduction of CO 2 concentrations is now a matter of urgency. Herein, we developed amine-modified biochar-silica hybrid aerogels template cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) for CO 2 capture. CNCs can self-assemble into an ordered lamellar structure and maintain their original structure after calcination in N 2 atmosphere. At the same time, we chemically modified the hybrid aerogels with amines. The ordered pore structure and chemical modification effectively enhanced the CO 2 adsorption capacity and rate of hybrid aerogels. The test showed that our material exhibited high adsorption properties of 2.81 mmol g −1 (0 °C, 1 bar). This work offers research ideas and methods for fabricating amine-modified biochar-silica hybrid aerogels for CO 2 capture.

Chitosan modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes and arginine aerogel for enhanced carbon capture

Abstract:Global warming is emerging as a significant issue because of increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere due to urbanization, industrialization, and fossil-fuel usage. Therefore, reducing atmospheric CO2 levels using new materials with high carbon capture capacity and efficient CO2 capture technologies is essential. Herein, we propose a hybrid chitosan (CS) aerogel containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and an arginine (Arg) aerogel (CSCNTArg aerogel) for efficient carbon capture. This aerogel was successfully synthesized using a cross-linker reagent via step-freeze drying method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the successful grafting of CS, MWCNTs, and Arg onto the CSCNTArg aerogel. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed good thermal stability up to 500 °C of the as-developed aerogel. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy showed that the surface morphology of the CSCNTArg aerogel differed from that of CS, Arg, and MWCNTs with pores on their surfaces. N2 and CO2 adsorption-desorption studies on the CSCNTArg aerogel were performed using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method and TGA, respectively. The CSCNTArg aerogel showed a high adsorption capacity of approximately 5.00 mmol g-1 at 35 °C. Therefore, this new material may be useful for facilitating high-efficiency CO2 adsorption to reduce atmospheric carbon footprint.
The Application of Hollow Carbon Nanofibers Prepared by Electrospinning to Carbon Dioxide Capture

Abstract:Coaxial electrospinning has been considered a straightforward and convenient method for producing hollow nanofibers. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop hollow activated carbon nanofibers (HACNFs) for CO2 capture in order to reduce emissions of CO2 to the atmosphere and mitigate global warming. Results showed that the sacrificing core could be decomposed at carbonization temperatures above 900 °C, allowing the formation of hollow nanofibers. The average outer diameters of HACNFs ranged from 550 to 750 nm, with a shell thickness of 75 nm. During the carbonization stage, the denitrogenation reactions were significant, while in the CO2 activation process, the release of carbon oxides became prominent. Therefore, the CO2 activation could increase the percentages of N=C and quaternary N groups. The major nitrogen functionalities on most samples were O=C–NH and quaternary N. However, =C and quaternary N groups were found to be crucial in determining the CO2 adsorption performance. CO2 adsorption on HACNFs occurred due to physical adsorption and was an exothermic reaction. The optimal CO2 adsorption performance was observed for HACNFs carbonized at 900 °C, where 3.03 mmol/g (1 atm) and 0.99 mmol/g (0.15 atm) were measured at 25 °C. The degradation of CO2 uptakes after 10 adsorption−desorption cyclic runs could be maintained within 8.9%.

Abstract:Chemisorption of CO2 by amine-based solid adsorbents is an effective approach to reduce the greenhouse effect. However, the scalable fabrication of excellent materials with superior CO2 adsorption capacity and outstanding cycle performance remains a big challenge. Here we demonstrate a unique architecture of macroscopic 3D porous graphene-like carbon nanosheets (3D-PGCNs) through a simple one-step carbonization of a mixture of melamine and natural soybean oil. The key feature of 3D-PGCNs is that the formed ultrathin graphene-like carbon nanosheets have crumpled morphology and 3D interconnected macropore structure, leading to a high pore volume (3.48 cm(3) g(-1)) with capable of loading large amount of amine species. As a result, the 3D hybrid (3D-PEI-PGCNs) impregnated with 40 wt% polyethyleneimine (PEI) exhibits a high CO2 adsorption capacity of 117 mg g(-1) at 75 degrees C with excellent cycling stability. Abstract:Design of efficient CO 2 adsorbent is an effective way to capture CO 2 . Bamboo-derived activated carbon is a promising CO 2 adsorbent. As a result, the obtained CUPI-8 exhibits higher CO 2 adsorption capacity compared to carbonized polyimide aerogels due to the synergistic effect of micropores and lamellar pores. Specially, the CO 2 adsorption capacity over CUPI-8 can be up to 5.75 mmol/g at 20 bar and 298 K. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm of CUPI-8 still shows an upward trend even nearly 20 bar. The isosteric adsorption heat (Q st ) value of CUPI-8 is nearly in the ideal scope of 30∼50 kJ mol -1 . The efficient CO 2 adsorption performance and good chemical stability of CUPI aerogel makes it a promising absorbent for practical application. This work provides a new opportunity for researching the effect of pore morphology/topology and the synergistic effect of hierarchical pores on CO 2 capture. Abstract:The never-ending increasing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere is at an alarming rate, associated with many serious environmental concerns such as climate change and global warming. In order to mitigate the effects induced by CO2 emissions, many efforts have been dedicated to exploring practical strategies to reduce CO2 emissions. One of the strategies is to capture CO2 from point sources before its release to the atmosphere using adsorption technologies, commonly known as carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology. This review compares and discusses of currently available carbon-based materials as CO2 sorbents with the special focus on electrospun graphene carbon nanofibers and their functionalization, which possess excellent physicochemical properties with high specific surface area, wide pore size distribution, and high concentration of active adsorption sites for improving CO2 adsorption. Inclusively, this review will comprehensively focus on the development and modification of graphene electrospun carbon nanofibers (gCNFs) for optimizing CO2 capture.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel approach for generating highly effective CO 2 adsorbents derived from glycated chitosan (GC) and electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG) nanoplatelets. The significant enhancement in the CO 2 adsorption capacity of EEG–GC aerogels in comparison to their building blocks is achieved by inducing mesoporosity enabled by linking amine groups on GC and phosphate groups on EEG. The glycation of chitosan facilitates its enhanced dispersion in water, and effectively eliminates its amorphous parts, leading to a bimodal particle size distribution. The extent of glycation and the weight ratio of EEG to GC affect the precursor gel's microstructure and mesoporosity in the derived aerogels, with optimal conditions identified. The derived aerogels demonstrate exceptional CO 2 adsorption capacity of 2.88 mmol g −1 and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 43.8, at 298 K and 1 bar, and can be regenerated employing Joule heating with minimal reduction in adsorption capacity (demonstrated for 20 cycles). These findings highlight the innovative use of amine–phosphate coupling along with the bimodal distribution of GC to induce mesoporosity, providing new avenues for developing effective CO 2 adsorbents for industrial use.

Abstract:Activated carbon has an excellent porous structure and is considered a promising adsorbent and electrode material. In this study, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) with abundant microporous structures, derived from natural cotton fibers, were successfully synthesized at a certain temperature in an Ar atmosphere and then activated with KOH. The obtained ACFs were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), elemental analysis, nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N2 adsorption-desorption measurement. The obtained ACFs showed high porous qualities and had a surface area from 673 to 1597 m2/g and a pore volume from 0.33 to 0.79 cm3/g. The CO2 capture capacities of prepared ACFs were measured and the maximum capture capacity for CO2 up to 6.9 mmol/g or 4.6 mmol/g could be achieved at 0 °C or 25 °C and 1 standard atmospheric pressure (1 atm). Furthermore, the electrochemical capacitive properties of as-prepared ACFs in KOH aqueous electrolyte were also studied. It is important to note that the pore volume of the pores below 0.90 nm plays key roles to determine both the CO2 capture ability and the electrochemical capacitance. This study provides guidance for designing porous carbon materials with high CO2 capture capacity or excellent capacitance performance.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removal based on porous materials adsorption is one of the most promising strategies to address current global climate change issues. However, existing porous materials suffer from several problems including weak interfacial connection between functional nanomaterials and substrates, not being eco-friendly, poor processability, short service life, and expensive manufacturing cost. Herein, we report a green fiber-based CO 2 adsorbent through in-situ growth of ZIF-8 on 3D fibrillar lyocell/feather nonwovens () in a low-cost and scalable manner. The combination of fibrillation treatment with de-crosslink strategy endows lyocell/feather nonwovens with the coexisting structure of micro-nano fibers and abundant functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl group, and amino group, which greatly increases ZIF-8 loading. Moreover, with the synergistic effect of ZIF-8 and amino groups in feather fibers, the resultant achieved both physical and chemical capturing of CO 2 . Notably, with the loading rate of 12.41 wt% possessed optimal CO 2 adsorption capacity of 4.46 cm 3 g −1 at a high CO 2 concentration environment and 190.84 ppm g −1 at a low CO 2 concentration environment whilst exhibiting stable cyclic adsorption/desorption behavior. Taken together, this work paves the way for designing high-performance environmentally friendly fiber-based CO 2 adsorbents.

Abstract:In this study, Na2CO3‐based porous carbon materials were prepared by high‐temperature thermal dispersion method, which had strong CO2 capture capacity and renewability, indicating that the material has good development and application prospects. Porous carbon is considered a promising adsorbent for carbon capture and sequestration, and pore structure and surface activity must be optimized in order to achieve high capture capacity and recycling performance. In this study, terephthalic acid and sodium hydroxide were used as raw materials to prepare sodium carbonate based porous carbon and metal oxide composites at TPA:NaOH:X(X = MgO, CaO, MgO/CaO, Mg(NO3)2,C, and Al2O3) = 1:1:2 and 600 °C. The analysis results show that the material MgO/Na2CO3 has the best CO2 adsorption capacity, and the adsorption capacity is 10.56cm3/g at 0 °C and 1 bar. The material Al2O3/Na2CO3 has the best thermal stability, and the MgO/Na2CO3 shows good recycling performance in the five cycle test. The high‐temperature calcination process makes the mesoporous structure of the material form, which makes the carbon composites show good capture performance, and sodium carbonate based solid adsorbents have good development and application prospects as CO2 capture and separation materials.
