Abstract:Objective: To evaluate what proportion of abstracts presented at the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons (SGS) Annual Scientific Meetings went on to be published in publicly available journals. Design: Retrospective observational study SETTING: Single organization PARTICIPANTS: Abstracts (oral presentations, oral posters, video presentations, non-oral posters) presented at the SGS Annual Scientific Meeting from 2013-2020 INTERVENTIONS: Variables were collected pertaining to abstract authors, study type, timing of the session presented, and journal factors. To identify possible publication, abstracts were cross-referenced in PubMed and Google Scholar. Measurements and main results: A total of 912 abstracts were reviewed: 155 oral presentations, 184 oral posters, 79 video presentations, and 490 non-oral posters. 45.8% of abstracts went on to publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Most abstracts (75.0%) were published from institutions with a fellowship presence and at a university-based program (71.5%). The five most represented institutions presented 27.5% of all abstracts during an SGS session. Oral presentations were more likely than oral posters to be structured as randomized controlled trials (20% vs 9%, p=.028), and to be published in a journal with a higher impact factor (6.36 ± 11.74 vs. 3.88 ± 2.72, p=.031). Type of presentation and fellowship presence significantly affected the likelihood of abstract publication (oral presentation OR 0.73, 95% CI [0.466, 1.141], p=0.167; video OR 0.14, 95% CI [0.075, 0.261; non-oral poster OR 0.30, 95% CI [0.204, 0.439]; p<.001; fellowship OR 1.62, 95% CI [1.167, 2.237], p=.004). Conclusion: Over eight years of the SGS Annual Scientific Meeting, the rate of abstract publication was 45.8%. Abstract origination from an academic institution with a fellowship program significantly affected the likelihood of publication. Abstract presentation at a society meeting is a prestigious opportunity, and prioritization of resources and elimination of barriers should be encouraged to further promote progression of these projects to publication.

Abstract:Background: Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) annual meetings provide opportunities to disseminate cardiothoracic research. We assessed rates of publication of STS abstracts as manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals over five years and determined factors associated with successful publication. Methods: The STS "Annual Meeting Archive" was searched online for abstract books from STS annual meetings from 2015-2019. Abstract books were reviewed for information about presented abstracts. A PubMed and Google search was then performed to identify corresponding peer-reviewed journal publications. Results: A total of 1451 abstracts were presented at STS annual meetings from 2015-2019. Overall publication rate of accepted abstracts as manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals was 1097/1451=75.60%. Most published manuscripts were published in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery (750/1097=68.37%). Median duration between abstract presentation and peer-reviewed journal publication was 313[IQR=212.5-458] days. Only 29/1451=2.00% of abstracts won an award, and all 29 of these award-winning abstracts were published as a manuscript. Oral presentation was associated with increased odds of publication compared to poster presentation (OR=1.28[95% CI=1.04-1.71], p=0.021). Median 5-year impact factor of peer-reviewed journals containing these manuscripts was 5.04[IQR=5.04-5.04], and corresponding manuscripts were cited a median of 4[IQR=1-9] times. Overall, 836/1097=76.20% of manuscripts published in peer-reviewed scientific journals had a corresponding North American author. Conclusions: Annual STS meetings are a forum for the presentation of high-quality research. The rate of publication of accepted STS abstracts as manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals is >75%, comparing favorably with national meetings of other surgical societies, and >2/3 of published manuscripts are published in STS's official journal.

Abstract:Background Presentations are an important means of knowledge generation. Publication of these studies is important for dissemination of findings beyond meeting attendees. We analyzed a 10-year sample of presented abstracts at Plastic Surgery The Meeting and describe factors that improve rate and speed of conversion to peer-reviewed publication. Methods Abstracts presented between 2010 and 2019 at Plastic Surgery The Meeting were sourced from the American Society of Plastic Surgery Abstract Archive. A random sample of 100 abstracts from each year was evaluated. Abstract information and demographics were recorded. The title or author and keywords of each abstract were searched using a standardized workflow to find a corresponding published paper on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Google. Data were analyzed for trends and factors affecting conversion rate. Results A total of 983 presented abstracts were included. The conversion rate was 54.1%. Residents and fellows constituted the largest proportion of presenters (38.4%). There was a significant increase in medical student and research fellow presenters during the study period ( P < 0.001). Conversion rate was not affected by the research rank of a presenter's affiliated institution ( β = 1.001, P = 0.89), geographic location ( P = 0.60), or subspecialty tract ( P = 0.73). US academics had a higher conversion rate (61.8%) than US nonacademics (32.7%) or international presenters (47.1%) ( P < 0.001). Medical students had the highest conversion rate (65.6%); attendings had the lowest (45.0%). Research fellows had the lowest average time to publication (11.6 months, P = 0.007). Conclusions Lower levels of training, factors associated with increased institution-level support, and research quality affect rate and time to publication. These findings highlight the success of current models featuring medical student and research fellow-led projects with strong resident and faculty mentorship.

Abstract:Background: The British Association of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPS) annual congress is an opportunity to present clinical and scientific data that may influence future practice. The presentation of the Abstract is but the first step towards definitive publication in the medical literature. Our aim was to review what the success rate has been from previous congresses. Methods: Abstracts were reviewed for the 11-year-period 2009 to 2019. A MEDLINE search using keywords from title and authors' names was used to identify subsequent publication. Comparison with a previous dataset [1] (1999-2008) was also carried out. Linear data were compared for trend using Mann-Whitney-U. P ≤ 0.05 was accepted as significant. Data were expressed as median (interquartile range). Results: 1061 abstracts were presented orally with 555 (52.3%) subsequently published. The number per year was 90 (81-106) compared to 81 (74-79) in 1999-2008 (P = 0.25), although with a higher number actually published thereafter [45 (32-54)% vs. 30 (27-35)%; P = 0.0003)]. Publication occurred in a wide range of journals (n = 99), with most being in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery (n = 251), albeit with a smaller proportion (49% vs. 69% formerly, P < 0.05). Overall, UK institutions contributed 52.6% (n = 558) of abstracts with 240 (43%) of them subsequently published at 19 (17-29)/year. The proportion of UK presentations had increased from 43% formerly (P = 0.016). Most UK presentations originated from institutions within London [41% vs. 45% formerly, P = 0.04]. There was a wide range of abstracts from institutions from outside of the UK (n = 49) with 38 (26-51) abstracts accepted each year and of these 62.4% were subsequently published at 20 (15-36)/year. Conclusion: There has been an increase in abstracts accepted for presentation over the period, together with a higher proportion actually reaching publication. A strong international contribution was noted which has also been maintained. London remains the primary source of abstracts and publications from within the UK, although there was a higher proportion from other UK centres noted over this period. Bibliometric Research in Neurosurgery: A Review of the 50 Most Cited Bibliometric Publications in the Neurosurgical Literature

Abstract:Bibliometry is a popular research method that is used to explore and analyze large volumes of data in an effort to highlight trends, patterns, and impacts within a specific field. This review aimed at highlighting the characteristics and citation patterns of the high-impact bibliometric research studies that were published in the neurosurgical literature. Using PubMed and Google Scholar, the 50 (52 due to identical citation numbers for the lowest three articles) most cited bibliometric research publications were identified and reviewed. Information relating to the articles' publication and bibliometric features were retrieved. The articles' citation numbers were collected. The median article age and journal impact factor (IF) were eight years and 2.76, respectively. The majority of studies were published in World Neurosurgery and the Journal of Neurosurgery, which were the publishing journals for 18 (35%) and 12 (23%) articles, respectively. Twenty-six (50%) articles were first authored by researchers from the United States of America (USA). The highest bibliometric component was science mapping, which was the theme in 30 (58%) articles. The majority of the bibliometric focus was clinical topics/fields (22 (42%) articles) and neurosurgeons/departments (21 (40%) articles). The most popular bibliometric metric was the h-index (±variants), which was employed in 22 (42%) articles. The median size of analyzed data was 188, and the most frequently utilized databases were Scopus (22 (42%) articles) and Web of Science (21 (40%) articles). The median (range) citation numbers were 52 (29-238). The citation analysis showed significantly higher citation numbers for older articles (aged ≥ 8 years) and studies published in the Journal of Neurosurgery. The citation rates were not influenced by the size of the data, the searched databases, or the bibliometric features. In conclusion, the most cited bibliometric research publications in the neurosurgical literature were predominantly descriptive analyses of clinical topics/fields and performance analyses of neurosurgeons/departments. Their citation numbers were relatively modest and were positively influenced by the publication's age and by a specific publishing journal but not by the bibliometric features of the study. Bibliometric research provides useful analytic tools that can be utilized in review studies and other practical purposes such as scholarly practices and policy decision-making.
Elicitation of Broadly Neutralizing Influenza Antibodies in Animals with Previous Influenza Exposure

Abstract:Broadly neutralizing antibodies to influenza can be elicited by vaccination in animals previously infected or immunized by the virus. Stemming the Flu Shot Every year, the influenza virus gets a makeover so remarkable our immune systems barely recognize it. The virus mutates its surface antigens, which make it possible to evade immune attack even in people who have suffered flu in previous years. Yet, some parts of the surface antigen hemagglutinin (HA)—such as the stem region—are critical for infection and thus conserved. Consequently, scientists have targeted this region in strategies to build a universal vaccine. Unfortunately, the lack of widespread natural immunity to the stem region raises red flags about the efficacy of this method: What if previous immunity prevents the induction of broadly protective antibodies? Wei et al. now find that in mice and ferrets, neither previous infection nor previous vaccination prevents the induction of broadly neutralizing antibody responses. The authors primed mice with a DNA vaccine and then boosted with inactive influenza and found that HA stem–directed antibodies were elicited regardless of preexposure route. In ferrets, prime-boost with adenoviral vectors conferred protection against influenza challenge. Indeed, immunogenicity was actually enhanced in animals previously exposed to a divergent flu strain. Although these studies must be translated to humans, the new data suggest that administration of a successful universal flu vaccine won’t be restricted to people who have never before been exposed to the virus. The immune system responds to influenza infection by producing neutralizing antibodies to the viral surface protein, hemagglutinin (HA), which regularly changes its antigenic structure. Antibodies that target the highly conserved stem region of HA neutralize diverse influenza viruses and can be elicited through vaccination in animals and humans. Efforts to develop universal influenza vaccines have focused on strategies to elicit such antibodies; however, the concern has been raised that previous influenza immunity may abrogate the induction of such broadly protective antibodies. We show here that prime-boost immunization can induce broadly neutralizing antibody responses in influenza-immune mice and ferrets that were previously infected or vaccinated. HA stem–directed antibodies were elicited in mice primed with a DNA vaccine and boosted with inactivated vaccine from H1N1 A/New Caledonia/20/1999 (1999 NC) HA regardless of preexposure. Similarly, gene-based vaccination with replication-defective adenovirus 28 (rAd28) and 5 (rAd5) vectors encoding 1999 NC HA elicited stem-directed neutralizing antibodies and conferred protection against unmatched 1934 and 2007 H1N1 virus challenge in influenza-immune ferrets. Indeed, previous exposure to certain strains could enhance immunogenicity: The strongest HA stem–directed immune response was observed in ferrets previously infected with a divergent 1934 H1N1 virus. These findings suggest that broadly neutralizing antibodies against the conserved stem region of HA can be elicited through vaccination despite previous influenza exposure, which supports the feasibility of developing stem-directed universal influenza vaccines for humans.
Factors associated with the publication and impact of CUA abstracts over the last decade

Abstract:Introduction: The Canadian Urological Association’s (CUA) annual meeting is the largest gathering of Canadian urologists, and many abstracts that are presented go on to be published as peer-reviewed papers. Our objective is to determine the publication rates and impact of these abstracts, and examine predictors associated with their publication. Methods: We identified abstracts presented at the 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2021 CUA meetings, and determined if there were matching manuscripts based on author and title using a comprehensive Medline search. Standardized data was extracted. Medians and interquartile ranges are presented, and regression models were used to determine factors associated with manuscript publication, journal impact factor, and time to publication. Results: There were 1732 CUA abstracts in our years of interest. The overall publication rate was 45.4%. Median journal impact factor was 2.27 for all published abstracts and time to publication was 13.2 months. Type of presentation was significantly associated with publication rate (p<0.001), with 63.7% of podiums, 46.7% of moderated posters, and 39.5% of unmoderated posters published. The median journal impact factor was 3.45 for published podiums, 2.19 for moderated posters, and 2.10 for unmoderated posters. Conclusions: Approximately 45% of CUA annual meeting abstracts are eventually published. The type of presentation correlates well with both publication and impact factor, suggesting the CUA review process and scientific program committee does a good job of judging abstract quality.

An analysis of the abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the Society for Neuroscience from 2001 to 2006

Abstract:We extracted and processed abstract data from the SFN annual meeting abstracts during the period 2001-2006, using techniques and software from natural language processing, database management, and data visualization and analysis. An important first step in the process was the application of data cleaning and disambiguation methods to construct a unified database, since the data were too noisy to be of full utility in the raw form initially available. The resulting co-author graph in 2006, for example, had 39,645 nodes (with an estimated 6% error rate in our disambiguation of similar author names) and 13,979 abstracts, with an average of 1.5 abstracts per author, 4.3 authors per abstract, and 5.96 collaborators per author (including all authors on shared abstracts). Recent work in related areas has focused on reputational indices such as highly cited papers or scientists and journal impact factors, and to a lesser extent on creating visual maps of the knowledge space. In contrast, there has been relatively less work on the demographics and community structure, the dynamics of the field over time to examine major research trends and the structure of the sources of research funding. In this paper we examined each of these areas in order to gain an objective overview of contemporary neuroscience. Some interesting findings include a high geographical concentration of neuroscience research in north eastern United States, a surprisingly large transient population (60% of the authors appear in only one out of the six studied years), the central role played by the study of neurodegenerative disorders in the neuroscience community structure, and an apparent growth of behavioral/systems neuroscience with a corresponding shrinkage of cellular/molecular neuroscience over the six year period.

Evaluating innovation. Part 2: Development in neurosurgery

Abstract:OBJECT Patients, practitioners, payers, and regulators are advocating for reform in how medical advances are evaluated. Because surgery does not adhere to a standardized developmental pathway, how the medical community accepts a procedure remains unclear. The authors developed a new model, using publication data and patterns, that quantifies this process. Using this technique, the authors identified common archetypes and influences on neurosurgical progress from idea inception to acceptance. METHODS Seven neurosurgical procedures developed in the past 15-25 years were used as developmental case studies (endovascular coil, deep brain stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-l-nitrosourea wafer, and 3 radiosurgery procedures), and the literature on each topic was evaluated. A new metric the authors termed "progressive scholarly acceptance" (PSA) was used as an end point for community acceptance. PSA was reached when the number of investigations that refine or improve a procedure eclipsed the total number of reports assessing initial efficacy. Report characteristics, including the number of patients studied, study design, and number of authoring groups from the first report to the point of PSA, were assessed. RESULTS Publication data implicated factors that had an outsized influence on acceptance. First, procedural accessibility to investigators was found to influence the number of reports, number of patients studied, and number of authoring groups contributing. Barriers to accessibility included target disease rarity, regulatory restrictions, and cost. Second, the ease or difficulty in applying a randomized controlled trial had an impact on study design. Based on these 2 factors, 3 developmental archetypes were characterized to generally describe the development of surgery. CONCLUSIONS Common surgical development archetypes can be described based on factors that impact investigative methods, data accumulation, and ultimate acceptance by society. The approach and proposed terminologies in this report could inform future procedural development as well as any attempts to regulate surgical innovation.
Five-Year Institutional Bibliometric Profiles for 119 North American Neurosurgical Residency Programs: An Update

Abstract:Background: We recently performed a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 103 U.S. neurosurgical departments and found the ih(5)-index as meaningful and reproducible using public data. The present report expands this analysis by adding 14 Canadian and 2 additional U.S. programs. Methods: Departments were included if listed in the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Residency Directory. Each institution was considered a single entity, and original research articles with authors who were neurosurgeon faculty were counted only once per institution, although a single article may have been credited toward multiple institutions, if applicable. The following bibliometric indices were calculated and used to rank departments: ih(5), ig(5), ie(5), and i10(5). In addition, intradepartmental comparison of productivity among faculty members was analyzed by computing Gini coefficients for publications and citations. Results: The top 5 most academically productive North American neurosurgical programs based on ih(5)-index were found to be the University of Toronto, University of California at San Francisco, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Pittsburgh, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. The top 5 Canadian programs were the University of Toronto, University of Calgary, McGill University, University of Sherbrooke, and University of British Columbia. The median ih(5)-index for U.S. and Canadian programs was 12 and 10.5, respectively. Conclusions: This is the most accurate comprehensive analysis to date of contemporary bibliometrics among North American neurosurgery departments. Using the ih(5)-index for institutional ranking allows for informative comparison of recent scholarly efforts.
Increasing Neurosurgical Resident Research Productivity Through Cultural Shift: Choosing Carrots Over Sticks

Abstract:Introduction As part of the Milestones Initiative of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), residents in neurosurgery are expected to participate in either clinical research or basic science research. Therefore, each neurosurgical training program must offer the support and opportunity to achieve this goal. In 2012, a structured effort to promote a resident culture of research was introduced into the authors' neurosurgery residency training curriculum. This study reviews this experience over the last decade. Methods Data were collected from the authors' departmental neurosurgery website and Scopus to create a database of neurosurgical residents who graduated 10 years before and after 2012 and their publication output. Bibliometric measures were collected for all articles published by residents. Results were compared between residents who graduated before and after the introduction of the research initiative. Results A total of 127 publications were analyzed from 37 residents, constituting 174 authorships. There was a statistically significant increase in the number of publications per resident (P < 0.001), citation number per author (P = 0.002), and author h-index (P < 0.001) after implementing the initiative. There were no significant differences in the pre-residency and baseline demographic variables between the two groups. Conclusion This study relates the experience of initiating a research culture at the authors' neurosurgery training program, which did not emphasize scholarly productivity historically. The effort focused on creating a culture of curiosity as opposed to formal requirements. The results provided evidence that this strategy yielded a significant increase in academic output and impact. These findings have important implications for neurosurgical training programs.
How far do oral lectures at European Orthodontic Society congresses reach? A comparison of abstract publication rates, article citations, and social media mentions

Abstract:ObjectivesThis study investigated the scientific impact of oral abstracts presented in five consecutive European Orthodontic Society (EOS) congresses in terms of full-text publication rates as well as citations and social media metrics (altmetrics) of the resulting articles.MethodsPubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) and Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.nl/) were screened to identify published articles originally presented as lectures at EOS 2015–2019. EOS date, abstract title, subject, number of authors, authors' names, first author's country of origin, and type of affiliation were extracted from congress abstract books. Altmetric Attention Scores (AASs), number of X (formerly Twitter) posts, Mendeley reads, and citations of the articles were retrieved from Altmetric Explorer and Web of Science (WoS) databases, respectively. details, full publication rates and Altmetric mentions and WoS citations of the related articles were analysed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression.ResultsIn total, 51.79 to 73.91% of the lectures presented at EOS 2015–2019 were converted into peer-reviewed articles. There was a median interval of 10.95 months (interquartile range 20.5 months) between conference and publication dates. EOS congress year (overall Wald test P -value = .04) and number of authors (overall Wald test P -value < .01) were significant predictors for full-text publication of oral lectures. There was no significant effect of EOS presentation on AASs, citations, X posts, and Mendeley readers ( P > .05).LimitationsJournal impact factors and quartile rankings were not considered to determine the impact of the journals that published articles originally presented as EOS oral abstracts.ConclusionsOverall, 61.30% of EOS 2015–2019 lectures were published as full-length articles. Multi-authored abstracts presented higher odds of publication, whereas oral abstracts presented at EOS 2015 and 2018 had the lowest probabilities to reach full publication. EOS abstract-based articles were assigned similar numbers of citations and AASs to articles not presented at EOS congresses.

Abstract:ABSTRACTBackgroundStudies reveal that 44.5 % of abstracts presented at national meetings are subsequently published in indexed journals, with lower rates for abstracts of medical education scholarship.ObjectiveWe sought to determine whether the quality of medical education abstracts is associated with subsequent publication in indexed journals, and to compare the quality of medical education abstracts presented as scientific abstracts versus innovations in medical education (IME).DesignRetrospective cohort study.ParticipantsMedical education abstracts presented at the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) 2009 annual meeting.Main MeasuresPublication rates were measured using database searches for full-text publications through December 2013. Quality was assessed using the validated Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI).Key ResultsOverall, 64 (44 %) medical education abstracts presented at the 2009 SGIM annual meeting were subsequently published in indexed medical journals. The MERSQI demonstrated good inter-rater reliability (intraclass correlation range, 0.77–1.00) for grading the quality of medical education abstracts. MERSQI scores were higher for published versus unpublished abstracts (9.59 vs. 8.81, p = 0.03). Abstracts with a MERSQI score of 10 or greater were more likely to be published (OR 3.18, 95 % CI 1.47–6.89, p = 0.003). ). MERSQI scores were higher for scientific versus IME abstracts (9.88 vs. 8.31, p < 0.001). Publication rates were higher for scientific abstracts (42 [66 %] vs. 37 [46 %], p = 0.02) and oral presentations (15 [23 %] vs. 6 [8 %], p = 0.01).ConclusionsThe publication rate of medical education abstracts presented at the 2009 SGIM annual meeting was similar to reported publication rates for biomedical research abstracts, but higher than publication rates reported for medical education abstracts. MERSQI scores were associated with higher abstract publication rates, suggesting that attention to measures of quality—such as sampling, instrument validity, and data analysis—may improve the likelihood that medical education abstracts will be published.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Research productivity is a key criterion for applicant selection reported by residency program directors. Research volume reported on neurosurgery residency applications has risen steadily over the past decade.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objective</h3><p>Perform retrospective bibliographic searches of successful applicants who matched into U.S. neurosurgery residency programs from 2011 to 2018, and assess the relationship between academic publishing and residency placement.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Gender, MD/PhD status, <em>U.S. News</em> research ranking of medical school, and international medical graduate status (IMG) were determined for 1634 successful applicants from 2011 to 2018. Indexed publications before and after the start of residency were tabulated by Scopus®. Publication counts were stratified by first author, basic/clinical science, case reports, reviews, or other research. We then compared publishing trends across demographic variables and match cohorts.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Average pre-residency publications increased from 2.6 [1.7, 3.4] in 2011 to 6.5 [5.1, 7.9] in 2018. Men, PhD-holders, Top 20 and Top 40 U.S. medical school graduates, and IMGs had higher pre-residency publication counts overall. After stratifying by match cohort, however, there was no significant effect of gender on pre-residency publications. Applicants matching into residency programs with highly ranked affiliated hospitals had significantly higher pre-residency publications.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>Publishing volume of successful neurosurgery applicants in the U.S. has risen recently and is associated with the stature of matched residency programs. Given the gap between verifiable and claimed research on residency applications, attention is needed to objectively evaluate research credentials in the selection process. The impending phase out of USMLE step 1 scores may increase emphasis on academic productivity.</p>

Abstract:Background and Objective: Neurosurgical research is a rapidly evolving field, with numerous studies continuously published. As the body of research grows, upholding high-quality standards becomes increasingly essential. Open science practices offer tools to ensure quality and transparency. However, the prevalence of these practices remains unclear. This study investigated the extent to which neurosurgical publications have implemented open science practices. Methods: Five open science practices (preprint, equator guidelines, published peer review comments, preregistration, and open accessibility to data and methods) were measured from five top-ranked neurosurgical journals (Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, Neurosurgical Review, and Acta Neurochirurgica), according to Google Scholar. One hundred fifty articles were randomly sampled from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023. Two reviewers analyzed these articles for their utilization of open science practices. A third reviewer settled disagreements. Results: One journal required (20%) and three journals (60%) recommended utilizing EQUATOR guidelines. Three journals (60%) allowed preprints, and all five journals (100%) recommended or required preregistration of clinical trials, but only two (40%) recommended preregistration for systematic reviews (Figure 1). All five journals (100%) recommended or required methods to be publicly available, but none (0%) published peer-review comments. Neurosurgical Review utilized the most open science practices, with a mean utilization of 1.4 open science practices per publication versus 0.9 across the other four journals (p < 0.001). Moreover, Neurosurgical Review significantly utilized more open science practices versus Journal of Neurosurgery (p < .05) and World Neurosurgery (p < .05). Both randomized controlled trials (p < .001) and systematic reviews (p < .001) significantly utilized more open science practices compared to observational studies. Conclusions: Despite advocacy from neurosurgical journals, the adoption of open science practices still needs improvement. Implementing incentives and clearer requirements may prove beneficial. Promoting these practices is crucial to enhancing transparency and research quality in neurosurgery. Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic led to stringent guidelines to restrict the conduct of non-emergent surgical procedures. Consequently, neurosurgery departments experienced a decline in case volumes and greater educational time being spent on virtual research projects. In our report, we reveal how neurosurgical research has changed during the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic phase. The WebOfScience database was searched for neurosurgical articles published between 2012–2019 (pre-pandemic) and 2020–2022 (pandemic). From this data, the keywords, terms, and countries were analyzed using networks formed by the VOS Viewer software. In addition, the analysis was repeated for neurosurgical articles specific to COVID-19. Network analyses of terms and keywords revealed an increased popularity of virtual research projects, including case reports, meta-analyses, reviews, surveys, and database studies. Additionally, there was increased interest in research pertaining to neurosurgical education during the post-pandemic era, including topics regarding virtual training modalities, mental health, and telemedicine. Our bibliometrics analysis suggests that the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on hospital systems affected neurosurgical training programs. Future investigations should explore the effects of the trainee experience during the COVID-19 pandemic on the outlook for neurosurgical education.

Analysis on citations in Chinese Journal of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery from 2000 to 2008

Abstract:Objective To assess the impact of papers issued on Chinese Journal of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery by citation analysis.Methods Papers and citations issued on the journal between 2000-2008 were retrieved from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI)-Chinese Citation Database and CNKI-Chinese Journal Full-text Database (CJFD) and then analyzed statistically by Microsoft Excel.Results Of the total 1 907 papers,1 179 were cited and the citation rate was 61.8%.The citation rate of the papers published in 2003 was the highest,72.9%.The total citation frequency of 1 179 papers was 3 867 and the average citation frequency of single paper was 3.30 with the top times of 90.Twenty papers were cited more than 20 times including 15 clinical studies,4 comments and 1 review.The two most-cited papers referred to surgery for hypertensive hemorrhage and pituitary adenoma.The three journals which had most-cited the papers were Chinese Journal of Neurosurgery,Chinese Journal of Clinical Neurosurgery and Chinese Journal of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery.Conclusions The journal is highly specialized and influential,and it has become one of the most important information resources for clinical work and scientific research in neurosurgery.Five-year impact factor is more objective and exact to evaluate the journal than 2-year impact factor.
