Abstract:Sleep deprivation (SD) has been reported to severely affect executive function, and interindividual differences in these effects may contribute to the SD-associated cognition impairment. However, it is unclear how individual differences in chronotypes (morning-type, MT; evening-type, ET) influence neurobehavioral functions after SD. To address this question, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to evaluate whether 24 h of SD differentially affect response inhibition, a core component of executive function, in MT and ET individuals. Accordingly, MT and ET participants were instructed to follow their preferred 7–9-h sleep schedule for 2 weeks at home both prior to and throughout the course of the study, and then performed a go/no-go task during fMRI scanning at 08:00 a.m. both at rested wakefulness (RW) and following SD. We also examined whether the neurobehavioral inhibition differences in the chronotypes in each session can be predicted by subjective ratings (sleepiness, mood, and task) or objective attention. Behaviorally, SD led to an increased response time of go trials (hit RT), more attentional lapses, higher subjective sleepiness, and worse mood indices, but it did not impair the accuracy of go trials (hit rate) and no-go trials (stop rate). Regardless of the presence of SD, ET individuals exhibited a lower stop rate, higher subjective ratings of sleepiness, exhausted mood, and task difficulty in comparison with MT individuals. On the neural level, SD resulted in decreased inhibition-related activation of the right lateral inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) in MT individuals and increased rIFG activation in ET individuals. Moreover, the rIFG activation in ET individuals after SD was positively correlated to the subjective ratings of sleepiness and effort put into the task, which was considered as a compensatory response to the adverse effects of SD. These findings suggest that individual differences in inhibition-related cerebral activation after SD are influenced by chronotypes. In addition, ET individuals may be vulnerable to response inhibition. Thus, it is essential to take into consideration the chronotype in SD research and sleep medicine.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Evening chronotypes tend to have reduced white matter integrity within their axonal tracts and reduced functional connectivity compared to morning types, a pattern that has been attributed to chronic “social jet lag” and its attendant disrupted sleep patterns. It is not clear whether brain differences are due to chronotype, total sleep time (TST), or whether they are associated with actual bedtime exclusive of these other factors. Here we examined morphometric gray matter volume (GMV) and its correlation with bedtime, after controlling for confounding factors. Methods Forty-five healthy adults (22 female; aged 20 to 43), completed the Horne-Ostberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and the Tower of London (TOL), an executive function task of planning and sequencing. Participants wore an actigraph for 7 days and completed structural MRI imaging during the period of actigraphy. Morphometric GMV data were processed using standard procedures in SPM12. After controlling for age, sex, and intracranial volume, actigraphic bedtime was entered into a regression analysis to predict orbitofrontal GMV. Regional GMV was extracted and correlated with TOL performance. Effects of TST and MEQ were also examined during regression. Results Later bedtime was associated with increased GMV in the left superior orbitofrontal gyrus (p=.044, FWE corrected). This association remained significant after controlling for TST and MEQ. Moreover, greater GMV in this cluster was associated with poorer planning and sequencing on TOL in terms of excess moves (r=.357, p=.017), and faster response times (r=-.356, p=.018), suggesting impulsivity. Conclusion Later bedtime was associated with greater GMV of the orbitofrontal cortex, even after controlling for TST and chronotype, and this pattern was associated with greater impulsiveness and poorer planning. The causal direction of the relationship between bedtime and executive deficits remains unclear and will require further research. Abstract:Abstract Introduction The transition to adolescence is marked by critical shifts in sleep, including increased variability as well as delayed bedtimes, reduced total sleep time (TST), and reduced homeostatic sleep pressure. Sleep supports healthy brain development, and insufficient sleep impairs brain development in children and adolescents. Short-term experimental manipulations of sleep disturbance and deprivation in adults leads to dysfunction in declarative and working memory. The few experimental studies in youth suggest their cognitive abilities may be more resilient to sleep loss, but these typically include only one night of sleep manipulation. Here, we examined this phenomenon across a week of data. Methods Data was used from eleven 9- to 13-year-olds (M = 12.52, SD = 1.4, F = 5) in an ongoing measurement burst longitudinal study spanning one year. For seven consecutive days, participants completed daily sleep diaries, and the working memory task, the O-SPAN, which consists of remembering letters intermixed with math equations. Multilevel models which adjusted for age and sex were used to examine the bidirectional associations between sleep and cognitive performance at the between and within-subjects levels. Results Within-subjects (daily) variation in sleep duration, relative to each child’s typical sleep duration, was related to better working memory performance at trending significance. Within-subjects (daily) variation in working memory, relative to each child’s typical working memory performance, was related to significantly longer sleep duration. There are currently no statistically significant associations at the between-subjects level. Conclusion Our preliminary results suggest there are within-person, dynamic fluctuations in sleep duration and working memory in adolescents. On nights when adolescents sleep better, their working memory improves (and vice versa). Our ongoing day-to-day investigation of the role of sleep on cognition (target N=60) provides insight into the nuanced role sleep plays, especially along the performance spectrum. Future analyses in this ongoing study will evaluate dependencies in the data structure across the week, as well as developmental trends in sleep-memory associations. Abstract:Abstract Introduction Persistent sleep loss is common among adolescents. Its impact on cognitive functioning is well documented, particularly in working memory. We hypothesize that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity-disorder (ADHD) may be particularly vulnerable to such effects. Here we examine the impact of 5-nights of at-home sleep restriction on the neural correlates of working memory in young adolescents with and without ADHD traits. Methods Twenty-five peripubertal adolescents (12.36±0.88 years, 14F) were characterized by Conners-3-Parent ADHD-Index [>=/< 50% tile] as either high (ADHDy; n=11) or low (ADHDn; n=14). All participants completed an fMRI-monitored working memory task after two counterbalanced conditions: 5-nights of sleep optimization (SO; 10h TIB set to habitual risetime) and 5-nights of sleep restriction (SR; 7.5h TIB, equally delaying bedtime and advancing risetime). At least two nights of stabilization preceded both conditions. fMRI sessions consisted of two 7-minute runs of alternating 2-back and 0-back working memory blocks. Voxel-wise 2x2 linear mixed effects models (3dLME) investigated condition [SR vs. SO], group [ADHDy vs. ADHDn], and interaction effects on working memory activation (2-back>0-back). Significance was set to p<.005, k=30 voxels. Results Our actigraphy monitored protocol significantly reduced sleep period time by 20% (SR= 7.39±0.43h vs. SO= 9.19±0.39h; [t(24)=17.66, p<.001; d=3.53]) and total sleep time by 17% (SR= 6.79±0.51h vs. SO= 8.20±0.60h; [t(24)=12.9, p<.001; d=2.58]). At SO, fMRI 2-back blocks were associated with increased activation in task-on areas, such as the bilateral dorsal lateral prefrontal, anterior cingulate, and superior parietal cortices, and decreased activation in default-mode task-off areas, including the precuneus and medial prefrontal cortex. Of these regions, significant condition-by-group effects indicated that sleep loss increased activation in the bilateral superior parietal cortex (MNIx,y,z: [40, -48, 68], k=172) and bilateral cuneus/precuneus (MNIx,y,z: [16, -84, 48], k=1446), only in the ADHDy group. Conclusion These data are the first to indicate that ADHD status may influence how sleep loss affects working memory in the adolescent brain. Sleep loss increased activation of both task-on (e.g., superior parietal) and task-off (e.g., precuneus) regions in the ADHDy group. We speculate this pattern may reflect less efficient neural processing after sleep loss. Ongoing data collection will probe sources of inter-individual variability. Functional brain connectivity predicts sleep duration in youth and adults

Abstract:Sleep is critical to a variety of cognitive functions and insufficient sleep can have negative consequences for mood and behavior across the lifespan. An important open question is how sleep duration is related to functional brain organization which may in turn impact cognition. To characterize the functional brain networks related to sleep across youth and young adulthood, we analyzed data from the publicly available Human Connectome Project (HCP) dataset, which includes n-back task-based and resting-state fMRI data from adults aged 22-35 years (task n = 896; rest n = 898). We applied connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to predict participants' mean sleep duration from their functional connectivity patterns. Models trained and tested using 10-fold cross-validation predicted self-reported average sleep duration for the past month from n-back task and resting-state connectivity patterns. We replicated this finding in data from the 2-year follow-up study session of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, which also includes n-back task and resting-state fMRI for adolescents aged 11-12 years (task n = 786; rest n = 1274) as well as Fitbit data reflecting average sleep duration per night over an average duration of 23.97 days. CPMs trained and tested with 10-fold cross-validation again predicted sleep duration from n-back task and resting-state functional connectivity patterns. Furthermore, demonstrating that predictive models are robust across independent datasets, CPMs trained on rest data from the HCP sample successfully generalized to predict sleep duration in the ABCD Study sample and vice versa. Thus, common resting-state functional brain connectivity patterns reflect sleep duration in youth and young adults.

Abstract:The two-process conceptualization of sleep-wake regulation suggests that the biological underpinnings of the differences between morning and evening types in sleep timing and duration might be related to either the circadian process or the homeostatic process or both. The purpose of this report was to test whether morning and evening types might have similar homeostatic processes to achieve such ultimate goal of homeostatic sleep regulation as taking an adequate amount of sleep on free days. Weekend and weekday rise- and bedtimes reported for 50 paired samples of morning and evening types were averaged and simulated with a model of sleep-wake regulation. In morning and evening types of the same age, the homeostatic components of the sleep-wake regulation were found to be identical. Therefore, the difference in the circadian process between chronotypes of similar age can account for the observed differences between them in sleep timing and duration on weekdays and weekends. It was also demonstrated that the model-based simulations might have practical implications for informing an individual about the extent of unrecoverable reduction of his/her sleep on weekdays.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Evening chronotype is associated with increased risk for depression and suicide-related outcomes. This may be due to circadian-sleep misalignment, as previous studies have found chronotype-related differences in the relative timing between circadian phase (i.e., dim light melatonin; DLMO) and sleep. However, such differences may be attributable to variation in intrinsic circadian period length across chronotypes, rather than reflect actual circadian misalignment among those with an evening chronotype. The present study sought to compare predicted circadian and sleep timing across chronotypes using a light-based mathematical model of the human circadian pacemaker that controlled for intrinsic period length. Methods This was a secondary analysis of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Sleep and the Hispanic Health Study / Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Sueño datasets. Scores on the Reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire were grouped into “morning,” “intermediate,” and “evening” chronotypes. Sleep timing was determined by actigraphy and DLMO was predicted (pDLMO) from light and sleep/wake states using the extended Kronauer model. Circadian-sleep alignment was calculated as the timing between pDLMO and either sleep onset or offset (i.e., phase angles). Multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCOVAs) were used to evaluate the associations between chronotype and the timing/alignment of circadian and sleep variables, with post-hoc comparisons conducted using non-parametric bootstrapping. Results MANCOVAs identified chronotype differences in sleep onset, pDLMO, and pDLMO-sleep onset phase angles in both datasets. Chronotype was associated with pDLMO-sleep offset phase angles in MESA Sleep only. pDLMO and sleep onset were ~1-2 hours later for participants with an evening chronotype (p < .001 for all). In MESA Sleep, participants with an evening chronotype had a pDLMO-sleep onset phase angle that was ~30 minutes (95% CI: 13.5, 46.9; p = .002) shorter than those with a morning chronotype; in HCHS/SOL Sueño, it was ~17 minutes (95% CI: 3.6, 29.1; p = .033) shorter. Conclusion Assuming equal intrinsic periods, participants with an evening chronotype had a light exposure profile that predicted sleep onset at an earlier circadian phase than those with a morning or intermediate chronotype. These findings provide further evidence that an evening chronotype may be associated with chronic circadian-sleep misalignment. Support (if any) None

Abstract:Background Association has been found between chronotype and cognitive function in conventional observational studies but whether this association is causal and if so, its direction, is uncertain. There are also concerns among people with later chronotype that their habits may be detrimental to cognitive function. Methods We analyzed the association between chronotype (measured as sleep midpoint) and cognitive function (measured by Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) and Delayed Word Recall Test (DWRT)) using multivariable linear regression on 14,582 participants in the Guangzhou biobank cohort study (GBCS) from 2008 to 2012. Using bidirectional Mendelian randomization, we used 207 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with chronotype from the combination of UK Biobank and 23andMe (n = 697,828), and 127 SNPs associated with cognitive function from the combination of UK Biobank and COGENT consortium (n = 257,841). Findings Observationally in GBCS, later chronotype was associated with better cognitive function (MMSE scores: 0 = 0.14 per hour; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.09-0.19; DWRT scores: 0 = 0.07 per hour; 95% CI, 0.04-0.11). Bidirectional MR showed genetic predisposition to early, versus later, chronotype was not associated with cognitive function using inverse-variance weighted (0 = -0.02; 95% CI, -0.05 to 0.01). However, better cognitive function was associated with decreased odds of early chronotype (UK Biobank: odds ratio = 0.88 per standardized score; 95% CI, 0.83-0.93; 23andMe: 0.87 per standardized score; 95% CI, 0.80-0.95). Interpretation It is a reassuring finding for adults with later chronotype who may be concerned if such a habit has a negative impact on cognitive function. Copyright (c) 2022 The Authors. The impact of chronotype on circadian rest-activity rhythm and sleep characteristics across the week

Abstract:Circadian rhythms are maintained by a complex "system of systems" that continuously coordinates biological processes with each other and the environment. Although humans predominantly entrain to solar time, individual persons vary in their precise behavioral timing due to endogenous and exogenous factors. Endogenous differences in the timing of individual circadian rhythms relative to a common environmental cue are known as chronotypes, ranging from earlier than average (Morningness) to later than average (Eveningness). Furthermore, individual behavior is often constrained by social constructs such as the 7-day week, and the "sociogenic" impact our social calendar has on our behavioral rhythms is likely modified by chronotype. Our aim in this study was to identify and characterize differences in sleep and rest-activity rhythms (RAR) between weekends and weekdays and between-chronotypes. Male volunteers (n = 24, mean age = 23.46 y) were actigraphically monitored for 4 weeks to derive objective behavioral measures of sleep and RARs. Chronotype was assessed through self-report on the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. Sleep characteristics were derived using Actiware; daily rest-activity rhythms were modeled using a basic 3-parameter cosinor function. We observed that both Eveningness and Morningness Chronotypes were more active and slept later on the weekends than on weekdays. Significant between-chronotype differences in sleep timing and duration were observed within individual days of the week, especially during transitions between weekends and the workweek. Moreover, chronotypes significantly varied in their weekly rhythms: e.g. Morningness Chronotypes generally shifted their sleep duration, timing and quality across work/rest transitions quicker than Eveningness Chronotypes. Although our results should be interpreted with caution due to the limitations of our cosinor model and a homogenous cohort, they reinforce a growing body of evidence that day of the week, chronotype and their interactions must be accounted for in observational studies of human behavior, especially when circadian rhythms are of interest.
Low Social Support Is Associated With Shorter Leukocyte Telomere Length in Late Life: Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

Abstract:Objective The primary goal was to test the hypothesis that limited social support (SS) is related to shorter leukocyte telomere length (LTL), particularly in an older adult population. Methods Cross-sectional analyses were performed on 948 participants aged 45 to 84 years at Examination 1 of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (18.4% white, 53.1% Hispanics, and 28.5% African American). LTL was determined by using quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and SS was measured with the Enhancing Recovery in Coronary Heart Disease SS inventory. Results Across the entire sample, SS was not associated with LTL (p = .87) after adjusting for demographic (age, sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status), age × sex, age × race, health (body mass index, diabetes, pulse pressure), and life-style factors (smoking, physical activity, diet); however, the interaction term age (dichotomized) × SS was significant (p = .001). Stratification by age group revealed a positive association between SS (score range, 5–25) and LTL in the older (65–84 years; B[SE] = .005[.002]; p = .007) but not younger participants (45–64 years; p = .12) after adjusting for covariates. Conclusions These results from a racially/ethnically diverse community sample of men and women provide initial evidence that low SS is associated with shorter LTL in adults aged 65 years and older and is consistent with the hypothesis that social environment may contribute to rates of cellular aging, particularly in late life.
Frontoparietal Response to Working Memory Load Mediates the Association between Sleep Duration and Cognitive Function in Children

Abstract:Lack of sleep has been found to be associated with cognitive impairment in children, yet the neural mechanism underlying this relationship remains poorly understood. To address this issue, this study utilized the data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (n = 4930, aged 9–10), involving their sleep assessments, cognitive measures, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during an emotional n-back task. Using partial correlations analysis, we found that the out-of-scanner cognitive performance was positively correlated with sleep duration. Additionally, the activation of regions of interest (ROIs) in frontal and parietal cortices for the 2-back versus 0-back contrast was positively correlated with both sleep duration and cognitive performance. Mediation analysis revealed that this activation significantly mediated the relationship between sleep duration and cognitive function at both individual ROI level and network level. After performing analyses separately for different sexes, it was revealed that the mediation effect of the task-related activation was present in girls (n = 2546). These findings suggest that short sleep duration may lead to deficit in cognitive function of children, particularly in girls, through the modulation of frontoparietal activation during working memory load.

Connectivity within the default mode network mediates the association between chronotype and sleep quality

Abstract:<p>A late chronotype is associated with poor sleep quality, but the fundamental neural mechanism underlying this association remains unclear. Eyes‐open resting‐state functional MRI scans were obtained from 87 participants after extended wakefulness, and four subregions of the default mode network were extracted and analysed. Partial correlation analysis revealed that the functional connectivity between the precuneus and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) was significantly correlated both with sleep quality and circadian preference of the participants. Mediation analysis found that the precuneus–mPFC link fully mediated the correlation between chronotype and sleep quality. We concluded that increased neural communication in the midline cores of the default mode network (DMN) may be responsible for the poor sleep quality of late chronotypes. As late chronotypes exhibit vulnerability to many mental disorders, our results can be used to refine pathophysiological models and provide therapy for such psychological disorders.</p>

Multiple reflection attenuation in seismic data using backpropagation

Abstract:Multiple reflections in seismic data are generally considered to be unwanted noise that often seriously impedes correct mapping of the subsurface geology in search of oil and gas reservoirs. We train a backpropagation neural network in order to recognize and remove these multiple reflections and thereby bring out the primary reflections underneath. The training data consist of model data containing all multiples and the corresponding seismic sections containing only the primary arrivals. The basis for the modeling is data from a real well log that is typical for the area in which the data were gathered. In contrast to existing conventional deconvolution methods, the neural network does not depend on such restricting assumptions concerning the underlying model as, for example, the Wiener filter, and it has the potential to be successful in cases where other methods fail. A further advantage of the neural net approach is that it is possible to make extensive use of a priori knowledge about the geology, which is present in the form of well log data. Tests with realistic data show the ability of the neural network to extract the desired information.
Flexibility of brain regions during working memory curtails cognitive consequences to lack of sleep

Abstract:Previous research has shown a clear relationship between sleep and memory, examining the impact of sleep deprivation on key cognitive processes over very short durations or in special populations. Here, we show, in a longitudinal 16 week study, that naturalistic, unfettered sleep modulations in healthy adults have significant impacts on the brain. Using a dynamic networks approach combined with hierarchical statistical modelling, we show that the flexibility of particular brain regions that span a large network including regions in occipital, temporal, and frontal cortex increased when participants performed a working memory task following low sleep episodes. Critically, performance itself did not change as a function of sleep, implying adaptability in brain networks to compensate for having a poor night's sleep by recruiting the necessary resources to complete the task. We further explore whether this compensatory effect is driven by a (i) increase in the recruitment of network resources over time and/or (ii) an expansion of the network itself. Our results add to the literature linking sleep and memory, provide an analytical framework in which to investigate compensatory modulations in the brain, and highlight the brain's resilience to day-to-day fluctuations of external pressures to performance.
Predictors of interindividual differences in vulnerability to neurobehavioral consequences of chronic partial sleep restriction

Abstract:Interindividual differences in the neurobehavioral response to sleep loss are largely unexplained and phenotypic in nature. Numerous factors have been examined as predictors of differential response to sleep loss, but none have yielded a comprehensive view of the phenomenon. The present study examines the impact of baseline factors, habitual sleep-wake patterns, and homeostatic response to sleep loss on accrued deficits in psychomotor vigilance during chronic partial sleep restriction (SR), in a total of 306 healthy adults that participated in one of three independent laboratory studies. Findings indicate no significant impact of personality, academic intelligence, subjective reports of chronotype, sleepiness and fatigue, performance on working memory, and demographic factors such as sex, ethnicity, and body mass index, on neurobehavioral vulnerability to the negative effects of sleep loss. Only superior baseline performance on the psychomotor vigilance test and ability to sustain wakefulness on the maintenance of wakefulness test were associated with relative resilience to decrements in vigilant attention during SR. Interindividual differences in vulnerability to the effects of sleep loss were not accounted for by prior sleep history, habitual sleep patterns outside of the laboratory, baseline sleep architecture, or homeostatic sleep response during chronic partial SR. A recent theoretical model proposed that sleep-wake modulation may be influenced by competing internal and external demands which may promote wakefulness despite homeostatic and circadian signals for sleep under the right circumstances. Further research is warranted to examine the possibility of interindividual differences in the ability to prioritize external demands for wakefulness in the face of mounting pressure to sleep.

Abstract:Summary The glymphatic system is centred around brain cerebrospinal fluid flow and is enhanced during sleep, and the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis proposes that sleep acts on brain microstructure by selective synaptic downscaling. While so far primarily studied in animals, we here examine in humans if brain diffusivity and microstructure is related to time of day, sleep quality and cognitive performance. We use diffusion weighted images from 916 young healthy individuals, aged between 22 and 37 years, collected as part of the Human Connectome Project to assess diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space index, white matter fractional anisotropy, intra‐neurite volume fraction and extra‐neurite mean diffusivity. Next, we examine if these measures are associated with circadian time of acquisition, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (high scores correspond to low sleep quality) and age‐adjusted cognitive function total composite score. Consistent with expectations, we find that diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space index and orbitofrontal grey matter extra‐neurite mean diffusivity are negatively and white matter fractional anisotropy positively correlated with circadian time. Further, we find that grey matter intra‐neurite volume fraction correlates positively with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and that this correlation is driven by sleep duration. Finally, we find positive correlations between grey matter intra‐neurite volume fraction and cognitive function total composite score, as well as negative interaction effects between cognitive function total composite score and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index on grey matter intra‐neurite volume fraction. Our findings propose that perivascular flow is under circadian control and that sleep downregulates the intra‐neurite volume in healthy adults with positive impact on cognitive function.

Abstract:Chronotype or diurnal preference is a questionnaire-based measure influenced both by circadian period and by the sleep homeostat. In order to further characterize the biological determinants of these measures, we used a hypothesis-free approach to investigate the association between the score of the morningness-eveningness questionnaire (MEQ) and the Munich chronotype questionnaire (MCTQ), as continuous variables, and volumetric measures of brain regions acquired by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Data were collected from the Baependi Heart Study cohort, based in a rural town in South-Eastern Brazil. MEQ and anatomical 1.5-T MRI scan data were available from 410 individuals, and MCTQ scores were available from a subset of 198 of them. The average MEQ (62.2 ± 10.6) and MCTQ (average MSFsc 201 ± 85 min) scores were suggestive of a previously reported strong general tendency toward morningness in this community. Setting the significance threshold at P > .002 to account for multiple comparisons, we observed a significant association between lower MEQ score (eveningness) and greater volume of the left anterior occipital sulcus (β = −0.163, p = .001) of the occipital lobe. No significant associations were observed for MCTQ. This may reflect the smaller dataset for MCTQ, and/or the fact that MEQ, which asks questions about preferred timings, is more trait-like than the MCTQ, which asks questions about actual timings. The association between MEQ and a brain region dedicated to visual information processing is suggestive of the increasingly recognized fluidity in the interaction between visual and nonvisual photoreception and the circadian system, and the possibility that chronotype includes an element of masking.
