Abstract:Introduction: Morningness and eveningness is a phenomenon which looks at the differences among the individuals regarding their diurnal preferences, sleep-wake pattern of activity and alertness in evening or morning. Morning chronotypes are individuals who exhibit morning tendencies like rising early in the morning while evening chronotypes prefer to get up later in the morning and stay awake later at night time and also perform their best during late afternoon or evening. Morning chronotypes are known to exhibit better physical and mental health, greater self-esteem and academic performance. Aim: To estimate the prevalence of morningness and eveningness among medical students. Association of chronotype with academic performance was also determined. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted on 110 apparently healthy medical students at Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College, Nalhar, Haryana, India from October 2021 to January 2022. All the participants were sent a validated Morningness-Eveningness self-assessment Questionnaire (MEQ). Data of chronotypic preferences expressed as frequencies of participants (%) and association determined using Pearson’s Chi-square test and p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Study revealed that 67 (61%) students belonged to the Intermediate (I) chronotype, around one-fourth {n=26 (24%)} were Morning (M) type while 17 (15%) were Evening (E) type. Morningness was more frequently reported by females as compared to males in n=8 (28%) vs. n=18 (22%) respectively. Higher scores (≥50%) were more prevalent among M types as compared E types in n=10 (38%) vs. n=3 (18%) respectively}; however, association between chronotype and academic performance could not reach significant level (p-value=0.15). Conclusion: The distribution of chronotypes in study sample provided the evidence that majority of students could be classified as intermediate type. Morningness was more frequent in females as compared to males. Further studies with large sample size are needed to explore the influence of chronotype on academic performance.
The impact of chronotype on circadian rest-activity rhythm and sleep characteristics across the week

Abstract:Circadian rhythms are maintained by a complex "system of systems" that continuously coordinates biological processes with each other and the environment. Although humans predominantly entrain to solar time, individual persons vary in their precise behavioral timing due to endogenous and exogenous factors. Endogenous differences in the timing of individual circadian rhythms relative to a common environmental cue are known as chronotypes, ranging from earlier than average (Morningness) to later than average (Eveningness). Furthermore, individual behavior is often constrained by social constructs such as the 7-day week, and the "sociogenic" impact our social calendar has on our behavioral rhythms is likely modified by chronotype. Our aim in this study was to identify and characterize differences in sleep and rest-activity rhythms (RAR) between weekends and weekdays and between-chronotypes. Male volunteers (n = 24, mean age = 23.46 y) were actigraphically monitored for 4 weeks to derive objective behavioral measures of sleep and RARs. Chronotype was assessed through self-report on the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. Sleep characteristics were derived using Actiware; daily rest-activity rhythms were modeled using a basic 3-parameter cosinor function. We observed that both Eveningness and Morningness Chronotypes were more active and slept later on the weekends than on weekdays. Significant between-chronotype differences in sleep timing and duration were observed within individual days of the week, especially during transitions between weekends and the workweek. Moreover, chronotypes significantly varied in their weekly rhythms: e.g. Morningness Chronotypes generally shifted their sleep duration, timing and quality across work/rest transitions quicker than Eveningness Chronotypes. Although our results should be interpreted with caution due to the limitations of our cosinor model and a homogenous cohort, they reinforce a growing body of evidence that day of the week, chronotype and their interactions must be accounted for in observational studies of human behavior, especially when circadian rhythms are of interest.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction While much is known about the development and variability of chronotype (CT) in young adults, little is known in older adults, whose circadian rhythms tend to advance with aging. We assessed the associations between subjective and objective non-invasive chronotype markers, and their associations with demographics in older adults. Methods In an observational study of 60 community-living adults aged ≥60 years with self-reported sleep complaints, participants completed a Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (reduced version; rMEQ) and seven days of actigraphy. We dichotomized rMEQ into morning (>17) and other-CT(≤17). Seven-day average sleep midpoint, the midpoint between sleep onset and sleep offset, was measured by actigraphy. Seven-day average peak time in activity during the day was calculated using cosinor analysis of activity counts from actigraphy. Two-sample T-tests and Chi-square tests compared demographic factors (age, gender, race, education) and objective chronotype markers (sleep midpoint, peak time) between dichotomized CT groups (Morning-CT vs Other-CT). Pearson correlation coefficients examined the associations between the continuous rMEQ score and objective chronotype markers, and their associations with age. Results The mean age was 74±6.4 years [range: 60-90], 65% were women and 33.3% were minority race. Morning-CT (54%) and Other-CT (46%) had significantly different sleep midpoints (2:43 AM vs 3:20 AM, p=0.01) and different peak times (2:00 PM vs 3:00 PM, p=0.006). No significant differences were found in demographics between Morning-CT and Other-CT. Higher rMEQ score was significantly associated with earlier sleep midpoint (r=-0.52, p< 0.001) and earlier peak time (r=-0.51, p< 0.001). Advanced age was associated with earlier sleep midpoint (r=-0.46, p=0.0003), earlier peak time(p=-0.46, p=0.0003), and higher rMEQ score (r=0.22, p=0.09). Conclusion Among community-living older adults with sleep disturbances, we observed moderate correlations between subjective and objective chronotype markers. The rMEQ score significantly differentiated people with distinct objective chronotype markers, demonstrating the potential validity of rMEQ as a feasible marker for chronotype. Future studies with larger sample sizes should validate our findings, and could investigate whether subjective or objective chronotype markers have stronger associations with adverse outcomes. Abstract:Objective: Individuals with an evening chronotype prefer to sleep later at night, wake up later in the day and perform best later in the day as compared to individuals with morning chronotype. Thus, college students without ADHD symptoms with evening chronotypes show reduced cognitive performance in the morning relative to nighttime (i.e., desynchrony effect). In combination with symptoms presented in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), we predicted that having evening chronotype renders impairment in attention during the morning, when students require optimal performance, amplifying desynchrony. Method: Four hundred college students were surveyed for evening chronotype and symptoms of ADHD. Of those surveyed, 43 students with evening chronotype (19 with ADHD symptoms) performed laboratory attention tasks and were queried about fatigue during morning and evening sessions. Results: Students with ADHD symptoms demonstrated a greater decrement in sustained attentional vigilance when abstaining from stimulants and asked to perform cognitive tests at times misaligned with natural circadian rhythms in arousal compared to their non-ADHD counterparts with the same chronotype. While individuals with ADHD symptoms had slower reaction-times during sustained attention tasks in the morning session compared to those without symptoms, there was no significant group difference in working memory performance, even though both groups made more errors in the morning session compared to the evening session. Conclusion: These findings suggest that evening chronotype students with ADHD symptoms are at a greater disadvantage when having to perform sustained attention tasks at times that are not aligned to their circadian rhythm compared to their neuro-typical peers. The implications of this finding may be useful for the provision of disability accommodations to college age students with ADHD when they are expected to perform tasks requiring sustained attention at times misaligned with their circadian rhythms.

Abstract:Purpose: Circadian rhythms are synchronized, through the endogenous biological clock, with the 24-hour cycle, and associated with numerous changes in human functioning, both in physical and mental aspects. It is assumed that daily fluctuations in cognitive performance are a consequence of interacting homeostatic and circadian processes regulating an individual's sleep-wake rhythms. A chronotype may be understood as a phenotype of circadian cycles determined by an endogenous biological clock. Despite research findings showing a significant relationship between those factors and cognition, they remain insufficiently considered in the domain of cognitive psychology and neuropsychology. Views: This narrative review aims to describe and highlight the interactions between the time of day, chronotype, and cognitive performance in domains of mental activity variables, receptive functions, memory and learning, expressive functions, and thinking. Conclusions: The results of the research show that time-of-day effects on basic and more complex cognitive functions depend on an individual's chronotype with a dominant effect of synchrony between chronotype and time of cognitive testing, with large differences in circadian cycles between younger and older age groups. It is suggested that chronotype assessment and time of day control should be included as important variables in the diagnosis of cognitive function in both healthy and clinical populations. There is also an emerging need for further investigations to better understand how chronotype and circadian rhythms modulate human brain physiology and cognition.

Abstract:Chronotype or diurnal preference is a questionnaire-based measure influenced both by circadian period and by the sleep homeostat. In order to further characterize the biological determinants of these measures, we used a hypothesis-free approach to investigate the association between the score of the morningness-eveningness questionnaire (MEQ) and the Munich chronotype questionnaire (MCTQ), as continuous variables, and volumetric measures of brain regions acquired by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Data were collected from the Baependi Heart Study cohort, based in a rural town in South-Eastern Brazil. MEQ and anatomical 1.5-T MRI scan data were available from 410 individuals, and MCTQ scores were available from a subset of 198 of them. The average MEQ (62.2 ± 10.6) and MCTQ (average MSFsc 201 ± 85 min) scores were suggestive of a previously reported strong general tendency toward morningness in this community. Setting the significance threshold at P > .002 to account for multiple comparisons, we observed a significant association between lower MEQ score (eveningness) and greater volume of the left anterior occipital sulcus (β = −0.163, p = .001) of the occipital lobe. No significant associations were observed for MCTQ. This may reflect the smaller dataset for MCTQ, and/or the fact that MEQ, which asks questions about preferred timings, is more trait-like than the MCTQ, which asks questions about actual timings. The association between MEQ and a brain region dedicated to visual information processing is suggestive of the increasingly recognized fluidity in the interaction between visual and nonvisual photoreception and the circadian system, and the possibility that chronotype includes an element of masking.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Evening chronotype is associated with increased risk for depression and suicide-related outcomes. This may be due to circadian-sleep misalignment, as previous studies have found chronotype-related differences in the relative timing between circadian phase (i.e., dim light melatonin; DLMO) and sleep. However, such differences may be attributable to variation in intrinsic circadian period length across chronotypes, rather than reflect actual circadian misalignment among those with an evening chronotype. The present study sought to compare predicted circadian and sleep timing across chronotypes using a light-based mathematical model of the human circadian pacemaker that controlled for intrinsic period length. Methods This was a secondary analysis of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Sleep and the Hispanic Health Study / Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Sueño datasets. Scores on the Reduced Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire were grouped into “morning,” “intermediate,” and “evening” chronotypes. Sleep timing was determined by actigraphy and DLMO was predicted (pDLMO) from light and sleep/wake states using the extended Kronauer model. Circadian-sleep alignment was calculated as the timing between pDLMO and either sleep onset or offset (i.e., phase angles). Multivariate analyses of covariance (MANCOVAs) were used to evaluate the associations between chronotype and the timing/alignment of circadian and sleep variables, with post-hoc comparisons conducted using non-parametric bootstrapping. Results MANCOVAs identified chronotype differences in sleep onset, pDLMO, and pDLMO-sleep onset phase angles in both datasets. Chronotype was associated with pDLMO-sleep offset phase angles in MESA Sleep only. pDLMO and sleep onset were ~1-2 hours later for participants with an evening chronotype (p < .001 for all). In MESA Sleep, participants with an evening chronotype had a pDLMO-sleep onset phase angle that was ~30 minutes (95% CI: 13.5, 46.9; p = .002) shorter than those with a morning chronotype; in HCHS/SOL Sueño, it was ~17 minutes (95% CI: 3.6, 29.1; p = .033) shorter. Conclusion Assuming equal intrinsic periods, participants with an evening chronotype had a light exposure profile that predicted sleep onset at an earlier circadian phase than those with a morning or intermediate chronotype. These findings provide further evidence that an evening chronotype may be associated with chronic circadian-sleep misalignment. Support (if any) None

Abstract:Existing studies report contradictory findings regarding the association between chronotype and intelligence, particularly for morning testing. This study aimed to shed more light on the association by employing a multivariate approach and considering variables that can potentially provide more insight into the nature of the relationship. A sample of university students ( N = 123) completed Composite Scale of Morningness followed by an 8-day sleep diary and actigraphy recording. At the last morning of the recording, participants sampled their saliva five times for cortisol assays and took part in a testing session (8:30–10:15) consisting of completion of five intelligence tests, Dundee Stress State Questionnaire, and sleepiness-alertness scales at the beginning and at the end of the session. Results showed no association between general intelligence and chronotype, but eveningness was related to better word comprehension. The strongest predictor of general intelligence was task engagement, followed by task-related distress. Eveningness was related to lower absolute cortisol levels during 45 minutes since awakening, unrelated to cortisol awakening response, and linked to higher cortisol and lower subjective alertness during the testing session. It is concluded that eventual effects of chronotype on intellectual performance are very weak and can be outweighed by task engagement.

Sex and the Clock: Exploring Sex Differences in Chronotype and Circadian Preferences Among Cognitively Healthy Older Adults

Abstract:This study aimed to compare objective circadian rest-activity-rhythm (RAR) measures with self-reported circadian behavior and morning-evening preference in cognitively healthy older men and women. A total of 129 participants (ages 65-90) completed the Horne & Ostberg Morning-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and the Circadian Type Inventory (CTI) to assess their morning-evening preference and circadian traits, including rigidity, vigor, languidness, and flexibility. These subjective measures were compared to objective actigraphy data from a sub-cohort of 70 individuals who wore actigraphy watches for 24 hours a day over a 7-day period. Rest-activity rhythm variables were derived from the actigraphy data and analyzed. The results revealed significant sex differences in circadian behavior. Languid and flexible men (higher CTI scores) had significantly higher depression scores (GDS, p = 0.045) and showed more evening preference (MEQ, p = 0.007) compared to their vigorous and rigid counterparts, while no significant differences were found in women. Actigraphy data showed that men had less stable (interdaily stability, IS, p = 0.030) and more fragmented (interdaily variability, IV, p = 0.001) circadian rhythms than women. A significant association was found between acrophase time and CTI-FR scores (β = -0.406, p < 0.001), with earlier acrophase times linked to more rigid circadian rhythms. Additionally, earlier acrophase times and morningness preference were associated with faster information processing speeds (IPS, p = 0.018). These findings suggest that circadian behaviors and their impact on mood and cognition are more pronounced in older men than women, highlighting the value of actigraphy in assessing circadian profiles and sex differences in aging.

Dependence of Cerebral Oxygenation and Task Performance on Coloured Light Exposure and Chronotype: Blue and Red Do Not Have the Same Effects on the Prefrontal Cortex

Abstract:Background: In our previous studies, we investigated the right-left asymmetry (RLA) of cerebral tissue oxygenation (StO2) at rest in humans and the influence of the individual chronotype (i.e. individual chronobiological disposition) on StO2. The aim of the current study was to investigate (i) whether the RLA exists during a cognitive task and coloured light exposure (CLE), and (ii) how changes in StO2 induced by CLE and cognitive performance during a 2-back task are related to the subject's chronotype. Methods: 36 healthy subjects (22 female, 14 male, age 26.3 ± 5.7 years) were studied twice on two different days. They were exposed to a sequence of blue followed by red light or vice versa in a randomised crossover study design. During CLE, subjects were asked to perform a 2-back task. We measured StO2 of the right and left prefrontal cortex (PFC) as well as the right and left visual cortex with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). At the behavioural level, we recorded the number of correct and incorrect answers given by the subjects. The chronotype was determined with the Horne and Östberg morningness-eveningness questionnaire. Results: (i) We found that the blue and red light caused a RLA in the PFC. For red light exposure, the 2-back performance was negatively correlated with StO2 in the right PFC (r = -0.283, p = 0.016), and for blue light, exposure in the left PFC (r = -0.326, p = 0.005). (ii) 83% of subjects who performed the 2-back task at their optimal time of day according to their chronotype showed increased and higher changes in StO2 (ΔStO2 > 1%) compared to subjects who did not exercise at their optimal time of day. (iii) No correlation was found between chronotype and 2-back task performance (red: p = 0.38; blue: p = 0.42). Conclusions: We found for the first time that blue and red light exposure target different regions of the PFC during performance of a 2-back task, which can be explained by the approach and withdrawal model. These results illustrate that studying the subregions (i.e. right, left, and even centre) of the cortex provides a better understanding of the CLE effects in the human brain. Our study also shows that individual chronotype plays an important role in the individual changes in StO2 induced by CLE.
Day and night shift schedules are associated with lower sleep quality in Evening-types

Abstract:Eveningness has been suggested as a facilitating factor in adaptation to shift work, with several studies reporting evening chronotypes (E-types) as better sleepers when on night shifts. Conversely, eveningness has been associated with more sleep complaints during day shifts. However, sleep during day shifts has received limited attention in previous studies assessing chronotypes in shift workers. Environmental light exposure has also been reported to differ between chronotypes in day workers. Activity is also known to provide temporal input to the circadian clock. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare objective sleep, light exposure and activity levels between chronotypes, both during the night and day shifts. Thirty-nine patrol police patrol officers working on a fast rotating shift schedule (mean age ± SD: 28.9 ± 3.2 yrs; 28 males) participated in this study. All subjects completed the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). Sleep and activity were monitored with actigraphy (Actiwatch-L; Mini-Mitter/Respironics, Bend, OR) for four consecutive night shifts and four consecutive day shifts (night work schedule: 00:00 h-07:00 h; day work schedule: 07:00 h-15:00 h). Sleep and activity parameters were calculated with Actiware software. MEQ scores ranged from 26 to 56; no subject was categorized as Morning-type. E-types (n = 13) showed significantly lower sleep efficiency, longer snooze time and spent more time awake after sleep onset than Intermediate-types (I-types, n = 26) for both the night and day shifts. E-types also exhibited shorter and more numerous sleep bouts. Furthermore, when napping was taken into account, E-types had shorter total sleep duration than I-types during the day shifts. E-types were more active during the first hours of their night shift when compared to I-types. Also, all participants spent more time active and had higher amount of activity per minute during day shifts when compared to night shifts. No difference was found regarding light exposure between chronotypes. In conclusion, sleep parameters revealed poorer sleep quality in E-types for both the night and day shifts. These differences could not be explained by sleep opportunity, light exposure or activity levels. This study challenges the notion that E-types adapt better to night shifts. Further studies must verify whether E-types exhibit lower sleep quality than Morning-types.

Abstract:The two-process conceptualization of sleep-wake regulation suggests that the biological underpinnings of the differences between morning and evening types in sleep timing and duration might be related to either the circadian process or the homeostatic process or both. The purpose of this report was to test whether morning and evening types might have similar homeostatic processes to achieve such ultimate goal of homeostatic sleep regulation as taking an adequate amount of sleep on free days. Weekend and weekday rise- and bedtimes reported for 50 paired samples of morning and evening types were averaged and simulated with a model of sleep-wake regulation. In morning and evening types of the same age, the homeostatic components of the sleep-wake regulation were found to be identical. Therefore, the difference in the circadian process between chronotypes of similar age can account for the observed differences between them in sleep timing and duration on weekdays and weekends. It was also demonstrated that the model-based simulations might have practical implications for informing an individual about the extent of unrecoverable reduction of his/her sleep on weekdays.

Abstract:Background: There is considerable evidence supporting the elevated risk of mental health problems in individuals with evening chronotype relative to those with morning or intermediate chronotypes. Recent data, however, suggest that this risk may be explained, at least partially, by poor sleep quality. Methods: This study aimed to further clarify the roles of chronotype and sleep quality in mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, stress) in young individuals (18–40 years) living in the UK (n = 185) or Germany (n = 209). Results: Consistent with our recent observations in a comparable North Indian sample, we found that poor quality of sleep had significantly positive associations with adverse mental health outcomes both in the UK and Germany-based samples. Significant associations between evening chronotype and poor mental health were also evident, but these associations were fully mediated by poor quality of sleep in both samples. Conclusions: These observations suggest that efforts to identify sleep disruption in a timely manner and promotion of good sleep may prevent mental health problems, especially in individuals with evening chronotype and other known risks for mental disorders.

Abstract:This study used a single protocol to investigate the respective and related effects of the psychosocial conditions of testing (individual vs. group) and personality on the levels and daily variation of attentional performance of adolescents attending boarding school. From scores obtained on an adapted version of Horne and Ostberg's Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), 17 male (9 morning-type and 8 evening-type) participants were selected from among 50 volunteers. Attention was measured using a number crossing-out test carried out at four times of the day (07:30, 12:00, 14:00, and 19:30). No main effect of testing mode and personality trait was found on the mean level of performance. Time-of-day had an effect on the level of performance, which differed depending on whether the test was administered in a group or individually and on the morningness and eveningness dimension. The difference between the daily profiles appears to be dependent on the interaction of the factors studied. This study investigated the concept of "group psychological rhythmicity" and highlights the importance of synchronizing social rhythms.

Abstract:Introduction: Shorter and/or disrupted sleep during adolescence is associated with cognitive and mental health risks, particularly in females. We explored the relationship between bedtime behavior patterns co-varying with Social Jet Lag (SJL) and School Start Times (SST) and neurocognitive performance in adolescent female students. Methods: To investigate whether time of day (morning vs. afternoon), early SSTs and days of the school week can be correlated with neurocognitive correlates of sleep insufficiency, we recruited 24 female students aged 16-18 to report sleep logs, and undergo event-related electroencephalographic recordings on Monday, Wednesday, mornings, and afternoons. Using a Stroop task paradigm, we analyzed correlations between reaction times (RTs), accuracy, time of day, day of week, electroencephalographic data, and sleep log data to understand what relationships may exist. Results: Participants reported a 2-h sleep phase delay and SJL. Stroop interference influenced accuracy on Monday and Wednesday similarly, with better performance in the afternoon. For RTs, the afternoon advantage was much larger on Monday than Wednesday. Midline Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) yielded higher amplitudes and shorter latencies on Wednesday morning and Monday afternoon, in time windows related to attention or response execution. A notable exception were delayed ERP latencies on Wednesday afternoon. The latter could be explained by the fact that delta EEG waves tended to be the most prominent, suggesting heightened error monitoring due to accumulating mental fatigue. Discussion: These findings provide insights into the interaction between SJL and SST and suggest evidence-based criteria for planning when female adolescents should engage in cognitive-heavy school activities such as tests or exams.
Mindful larks and lonely owls: The relationship between chronotype, mental health, sleep quality, and social support in young adults

Abstract:<p>Chronotype is related to mental health, with evening chronotypes being more susceptible to psychological disorders than intermediate and morning types. The present study investigated the relationship between chronotype, mental health, sleep quality, and social support in Canadian young adults. We surveyed 3160 university students aged 18–35 years. Participants completed the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Medical Outcomes Study – Social Support Survey. We conducted Bonferroni-corrected one-way analyses of covariance with post hoc paired comparisons to determine the relationship between the aforementioned variables, with age and sex as covariates. We further looked at the moderation of social support on the relationship between chronotype and sleep quality. Overall, 55%, 36% and 9% of participants were classified as intermediate, evening and morning types, respectively. There was a significant difference between chronotype on levels of depression, anxiety, and sleep quality, with evening types reporting more severe symptomology than morning-types and intermediate types. Morning types reported greater levels of overall social support and mindfulness. Evening types reported the lowest levels of all types of social support. Social support did not moderate the relationship between chronotype and sleep quality. This study further demonstrates the association between worse psychological well-being and eveningness and between more social support, and mindfulness in morning chronotype young adults. Education and intervention are warranted to help evening chronotypes manage the potential negative features of their circadian rhythm, as well as to cultivate a greater sense of social support and mindfulness.</p>

Abstract:Circadian rhythms (lasting approximately 24 h) control and entrain various physiological processes, ranging from neural activity and hormone secretion to sleep cycles and eating habits. Several studies have shown that time of day (TOD) is associated with human cognition and brain functions. In this study, utilizing a chronotype-based paradigm, we applied a graph theory approach on resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data to compare whole-brain functional network topology between morning and evening sessions and between morning-type (MT) and evening-type (ET) participants. Sixty-two individuals (31 MT and 31 ET) underwent two fMRI sessions, approximately 1 hour (morning) and 10 h (evening) after their wake-up time, according to their declared habitual sleep-wake pattern on a regular working day. In the global analysis, the findings revealed the effect of TOD on functional connectivity (FC) patterns, including increased small-worldness, assortativity, and synchronization across the day. However, we identified no significant differences based on chronotype categories. The study of the modular structure of the brain at mesoscale showed that functional networks tended to be more integrated with one another in the evening session than in the morning session. Local/regional changes were affected by both factors (i.e., TOD and chronotype), mostly in areas associated with somatomotor, attention, frontoparietal, and default networks. Furthermore, connectivity and hub analyses revealed that the somatomotor, ventral attention, and visual networks covered the most highly connected areas in the morning and evening sessions: the latter two were more active in the morning sessions, and the first was identified as being more active in the evening. Finally, we performed a correlation analysis to determine whether global and nodal measures were associated with subjective assessments across participants. Collectively, these findings contribute to an increased understanding of diurnal fluctuations in resting brain activity and highlight the role of TOD in future studies on brain function and the design of fMRI experiments.
