Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy-enriched N/P co-doped cobalt ferrite (NPCFO) was synthesized using ionic liquid as N and P sources, and then the catalytic performance and mechanism of NPCFO upon peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the degradation of organic pollutants were investigated. The as-synthesized NPCFO-700 exhibited excellent catalytic performance in activating PMS, and the degradation rate constant of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) increased with the increase of OV concentration in NPCFO-x. EPR analysis confirmed the existence of ·OH, SO4·-, and 1O2 in the NPCFO-700/PMS system, in which OV could induce the generation of 1O2 by PMS adsorption and successive capture, and also served as electronic transfer medium to accelerate the redox cycle of M2+/M3+ (M denotes Co or Fe) for the generation of radical to synergistically degrade organic pollutants. In addition, the contribution of free radical and nonradical to 4-CP degradation was observed to be strongly dependent on solution pH, and SO4·- was the major ROS in 4-CP degradation under acid and alkaline condition, while 1O2 was involved in the degradation of 4-CP under neutral condition due its selective oxidation capacity, as evidenced by the fact that such organic pollutants with ionization potential (IP) below 9.0 eV were more easily attacked by 1O2. The present study provided a novel insight into the development of transition metal-based heterogeneous catalyst containing massive OV for high-efficient PMS activation and degradation of organic pollutants.
Effect of oxidized pyrite activating persulfate on the degradation of aniline aerofloat: Mechanism and degradation pathway

Abstract:Aniline aerofloat (dianilinodithiophosphoric acid, DDA) is a common flotation collector for sulfide minerals, but it is also toxic and difficult to be degraded. In this study, oxidized pyrite was used to degrade DDA through activating persulfate (PS). It was found that oxidized pyrite was far more effective than fresh pyrite at removing DDA from a PS system over a wide pH range. The effect of the pyrite oxidation time, initial pH, PS concentration, pyrite dosage and pyrite particle size on DDA degradation in the pyrite-PS system were studied and optimal conditions determined. Through analysis of the total Fe ions concentration, radical species identification and XPS analysis of the change of surface species Fe and S, the DDA degradation mechanism in the oxidized pyrite-PS system was determined. The degradation products were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and a potential DDA degradation pathway was hypothesized. The results in this study suggest a template for the utilization of oxidized pyrite in gangue minerals to remove DDA from the wastewater in mineral processing plants.

Abstract:Carbon materials are becoming the first choice for activating persulfate due to their environmental friendliness, high chemical stability, and metal-free leaching. However, the preparation of efficient carbon catalyst and the in-depth analysis for persulfate activation is still insufficient. Herein, N-doped porous carbons (NPCs) were prepared by the pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile and used to trigger peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading organic pollutants in water. The results showed that the optimized NPC-700, with large specific surface area, rich pore structure, high content of pyridinic N and graphitic N, as well as excellent oxygen-containing functional groups, possessed the best performance in activating PMS to degrade methylene blue (MB) with 99.15% degradation rate in 30 min. Furthermore, the NPC-700 delivered high stability under a wide pH from 3.51 to 11.15. The radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy revealed that •OH, O2•-, SO4•- and 1O2 active species were involved in the catalytic oxidation of MB. Besides, the NPC-700/PMS system exhibited excellent degradation performance for various organic dyes, including rhodamine B, acid orange 7, and methyl orange. This study not only provides a promising metal-free catalyst for the removal of organic pollutant in water, but also promotes the sustainable development of carbon-based materials.

Abstract:Adsorption, as a simple and efficient water treatment technology, faces the problem that it can only transfer but not fully mineralize pollutants. Transition metal activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) exhibit high catalytic activity, but leakage of metal ions poses potential health risks to the environment. To solve these problems, we ingeniously designed a micro−nanoreactor structure with glutaraldehyde crosslinked chitosan as the backbone and encapsulated MOF−derived Co−Fe nitrogen−doped graphitic carbon as the activated PMS reaction center (Co−Fe/NC@GCS). Due to its remarkable adsorption capacity, high concentration sulfamethoxazole could be efficiently enriched through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding, and a small amount of PMS could be rapidly attracted and activated. Meanwhile, the synergistic mechanism of adsorption−PMS activation was also analyzed, and the degradation pathway of sulfamethoxazole was expounded. This study aims to develop a new strategy for the removal of emerging organic pollutants in water with such a system with strong adsorption and catalytic capabilities.

Abstract:The heterogeneous catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate for wastewater treatment is attracting increased research interest. Therefore, it is essential to find a sustainable, economical, and effective activated material for wastewater treatment. In this study, metal–organic frameworks (MOF)-5 was used as the precursor, and a stable and recyclable material ZnO@Ni3ZnC0.7 that exhibited good adsorption and catalytic properties, was obtained by the addition of nickel and subsequent calcination. To investigate and optimize the practical application conditions, the elimination of rhodamine B (RhB) in water was selected as the model process. This study demonstrated that the degradation of organic matter in the system involved a coupling of the adsorption and degradation processes. Based on this, the mechanism of the entire process was proposed. The results of scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectrum analysis, and theoretical analysis confirmed that the van der Waals forces, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding influenced the adsorption process. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, masking experiments, and electrochemical tests conducted during the oxidative degradation process confirmed that the degradation mechanism of RhB included both radical and non-free radical pathways, and that the surface hydroxyl group was the key active site. The degradation of the adsorbed substrates enabled the regeneration of the active sites. The material regenerated using a simple method exhibited good efficiency for the removal of organic compounds in four-cycle tests. Moreover, this material can effectively remove a variety of organic pollutants, and can be easily recovered owing to its magnetic properties. The results demonstrated that the use of heterogeneous catalytic materials with good adsorption capacity could be an economical and beneficial strategy.

Abstract:Developing a facile preparation method to construct separable and recyclable Fenton-like catalysts holds great significance in the field of environmental remediation. Herein, a rapid dopamine (DA) polymerization strategy to modify melamine foam (MF) was proposed for the construction of bulk foam catalytic materials, which was further utilized for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade organic pollutants. Taking advantage of the chelation between dopamine's catechol group and Fe 3+ , as well as the oxidative environment provided by H 2 O 2 , DA could encapsulate and polymerize on the surface of MF within 2 h to obtain MF@Fe@PDA catalyst. Detailed experimental results demonstrated that MF@Fe@PDA could efficiently activate PMS to achieve almost 100% removal of bisphenol A (BPA) in 20 min, and the corresponding turnover frequency (TOF) value was one order of magnitude higher than that of the homogeneous (Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ ) and nanoparticle (Fe0) catalysts. The high activity of MF@Fe@PDA/PMS system stemmed from the Fe sites and carbonyl group (C=O), which could induce the activation of PMS for the rapid generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), sulfate radical (SO 4 •- ) and hydroxyl radicals ( • OH). Meanwhile, the coexisting bicarbonate ions (HCO 3 - ) in MF@Fe@PDA/PMS system could enhance the generation of 1 O 2 , thereby accelerating the degradation of BPA. Moreover, a flow-through system assisted by bulk MF@Fe@PDA catalyst was constructed for organic pollutants degradation. Overall, these findings may open up new possibilities for developing highly efficient catalysts for wastewater remediation.

Carbonyl and defect of metal-free char trigger electron transfer and O2- in persulfate activation for Aniline aerofloat degradation

Abstract:Residual flotation reagents in mineral processing wastewater can trigger severe ecological threats to the local groundwater if they are discharged without treatment. Metal-free biochar-induced persulfate-advanced oxidation processes (KCBC/PS) were used in this study to elucidate the degradation of aniline aerofloat (AAF) - a typical flotation reagent. In KCBC/PS system, AAF can be removed at low doses of catalyst (KCBC, 0.05 g/L) and oxidant (PS, 0.3 mM) additions with high efficiency. The analysis revealed the dominance of O2•- among the identified reactive oxygen species (ROS), which achieved deeper mineralization for the AAF degradation in the KCBC/PS system. The role of the electron transfer mechanism was equally important; the importance was corroborated by the chemical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) detection, probe experiments, and electrochemical analysis. It benefited from the electron transfer mechanism in the KCBC/PS system and exhibited a wide pH adaptation (3.5-11) and high resistance to inorganic anions for real mining wastewater treatment. Combined with theoretical calculations and other analyses, the carbonyl group was deemed to be the active site of the non-radical pathway of biochar, while the site of the conversion of SO4•- to superoxide radicals by biochar activation represented a defect. These findings revealed a synergistic effect of multiple active sites on PS activation in biochar-based materials. Moreover, the intermediate degradation products of AAF from mass spectrometry indicated a possible pathway through the density functional theory (DFT) method, which was effective in reducing the environmental toxicity of pollutants for the first time according to the T.E.S.T software and seed germination experiments. Overall, our study proposed a novel modification strategy for cost-effective and environmentally friendly biochar-based catalysts, while also deepening our understanding of the mechanism of activation of persulfate by metal-free carbon-based materials.

Abstract:The widespread use of emerging refractory organic contaminants poses a significant threat to human health, prompting the need for a cost-effective and efficient removal strategy. While the iron ions/PMS system effectively removes organic pollutants, slow Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ transformation hampers its efficiency, and the homogeneous distribution of iron ions complicates separation, resulting in secondary sludge pollution. Herein, we developed a novel submicron Fe-MoS 2 (S-Fe-MoS 2 ) catalyst with abundant surface cationic groups and sulfur vacancy through a cationic polyacrylamide aerogels (CPAMA) confined hydrothermal synthesis strategy. These features promote active site exposure, enhance reactant adsorption, and accelerate electron transfer between Mo and Fe sites, improving catalytic kinetics and promoting Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle for PMS activation. As a result, the S-Fe-MoS 2 /PMS system exhibited a high catalytic rate constant ( k obs ) of 0.32 min −1 , in the degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), 1.5 times higher than that of the conventional Fe-MoS 2 /PMS system. It also achieved 82.9% total organic carbon (TOC) degradation within 60 min. Additionally, it possessed similar degradation performance for various organic pollutants, along with remarkable reusability (four cycles) and broad pH adaptability (2–8), indicating significant potential for widespread application. This study provided a new way for developing advanced heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency for water treatment.

Abstract:Schematic representation showing the ZIF‐67@PVA/CA nanofibrous aerogel for treatment of wastewater using Advanced Oxidation Processes. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most promising advanced heterogeneous catalysts for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade organic contaminants in water, and have been extensively studied. However, MOFs in powder form usually have the disadvantage of poor separation and regeneration, making it significantly challenging for practical applications. In this study, ultralight zeolitic imidazolate framework‐67@poly(vinyl alcohol)/citric acid nanofibrous aerogel (ZIF‐67@PVA/CA NFA) was prepared by a convenient and facile in‐situ growth method and it had excellent catalytic efficiency and recyclability. The factors affecting the activation of PMS by ZIF‐67@PVA/CA NFA, such as PMS concentration, reaction temperature, solution pH, and organic pollutant concentration, were investigated. Taking advantage of the distinctive structural characteristics of MOF and nanofibrous aerogels, the obtained ZIF‐67@PVA/CA NFA exhibited ultralow density, hierarchical porosity, remarkably high catalytic activity for activation of PMS for the degradation of organic pollutants. Furthermore, ZIF‐67@PVA/CA NFA also displayed excellent recyclability along with retention of high catalytic stability. The present study provides a new strategy for the efficient fabrication of three‐dimensional heterogeneous catalyst for the activation of PMS, with great potential in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The treatment of organic dye contaminants in wastewaters has now becoming more imperative. Fenton-like degradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution was investigated by using a nanostructure that a layer of CuCl2 nanoflake film grown on the top surface of nanoporus anodic alumina substrate (nano-PAA-CuCl2) as catalyst. The new nano-PAA-CuCl2 composite was fabricated with self-assembly approach, that is, a network porous structure film composed of CuCl2 nanoflake grown on the upper surface of nanoporous anodic alumina substrate, and the physical and chemical properties are characterized systematically with the X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The experimental results showed that the nano-PAA-CuCl2 catalyst presented excellent properties for the degradation of two typical organic pollutants such as MB and MO, which were almost completely degraded with 8 × 10−4mol/L nano-PAA-CuCl2 catalyst after 46 min and 60 min at reaction conditions of H2O2 18 mM and 23 mM, respectively. The effects of different reaction parameters such as initial pH, H2O2 concentration, catalyst morphology and temperature were attentively studied. And more, the stability and reusability of nano-PAA-CuCl2 were examined. Finally, the mechanism of MB and MO degradation by the nano-PAA-CuCl2/H2O2 system was proposed, based on the experimental data of the BCA and the temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) and theoretical analysis, the reaction kinetics belonged to the pseudo-first-order equation. This new nanoporous composite material and preparation technology, as well as its application in Fenton-like reaction, provide an effective alternative method with practical application significance for wastewater treatment.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by iron-cobalt bimetallic phosphide modified nickel foam for efficient dye degradation

Abstract:Novel catalysts with multiple active sites and rapid separation are required to effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of organic pollutants from water. Therefore, an integrated catalyst for PMS activation was developed by directly forming Co-Fe Prussian blue analogs on a three-dimensional porous nickel foam (NF), which were subsequently phosphorylated to obtain cobalt-iron bimetallic phosphide (FeCoP@NF). The FeCoP@NF/PMS system efficiently degraded dye wastewater within 20 min. The system exhibited excellent catalytic degradation over a broad pH range and at high dye concentrations due to the presence of unique asymmetrically charged Coa+ and Pb- dual active sites formed by cobalt phosphides within FeCoP@NF. These active sites significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of PMS. The activation mechanism of PMS involves phosphorylation that accelerates electron transfer from FeCoP@NF to PMS, to generate SO4·-, ·OH, O2·-, and 1O2 active species. Three-dimensional FeCoP@NF could be readily recycled and showed good stability for PMS activation. In this study, a highly efficient, stable, and readily recyclable integrated catalyst was developed. This catalyst system effectively resolves the separation and recovery issues associated with conventional powder catalysts and has a wide range of potential applications in wastewater treatment.
Balanced Adsorption and Oxidation in a Porous P, N-doped Carbon Prepared by Melt-Salt-mediated Strategy for Enhanced Fenton-Like Reaction

Abstract:The activation of persulfate oxidation processes using carbon-based catalysts is attractive for eliminating persistent aromatic organic pollutants in wastewater treatment. Herein, N and P co-doped carbonaceous (NPC) catalysts with an ultrahigh surface area were synthesized using a melt-salt-mediated strategy, employing Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 as a self-sacrificing template. The NPC(1:1) carbon, prepared under optimized conditions, exhibited the highest surface area of 2001.5 m2/g, characterized by the highest number of defects and a high dispersion of N (1.89 %) and P (0.30 %) atoms on the carbon. This carbon catalyst exhibited a high capacity for adsorption and potential for activating persulfates in the removal of p-Nitrophenol (p-NP). Experimental data indicate a balance between adsorption and oxidation in the NPC(1:1)/PDS/p-NP system, with the highest catalytic removal rate achieved through moderate pre-adsorption of p-NP. Evidence from quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and amperometric i-t experiments suggests that the NPC(1:1)/PDS system primarily degrades p-NP through an electron transfer pathway. Defects in carbon and graphitic N were identified as catalytic sites. These defects resulted in an electron-deficient state, which leads to the activation of PDS and graphitic N was more reactive than both pyridinic and pyrrolic N in the adsorption of PDS molecules. Additionally, P-containing groups such as C-P-O, C-O-P, and C3-P were pinpointed as active sites on the carbons through DFT calculations. The intermediates during p-NP degradation were identified, and possible degradation pathways were proposed. A toxicity analysis indicated a significant reduction in overall toxicity following the oxidation treatment. This study provides innovative insights into the balance between adsorption and catalytic activity in porous carbon-activated persulfate oxidation reactions, thereby aiding in the development of enhanced oxidation catalysts for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Persulfate (PDS) activation is an effective approach for removing organic pollutants from industrial wastewater, but a more cost-effective catalyst is required. In this study, novel iron–carbon (Fe–C) granules were successfully prepared by a facile calcination method and were applied to PDS activation. Radical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, and electrochemical analyses were performed to investigate the removal efficiency of methyl orange (MO) by the Fe–C/PDS process and the effects of influencing factors such as the Fe–C dosage, PDS concentration, initial pH, and MO concentration. Fe–C was observed to have a pore structure and abundant functional groups that are beneficial for PDS activation and pollutant removal. The MO removal mechanisms of the Fe–C/PDS process included adsorption, degradation, and co-precipitation, among which the degradation process consisted of radical and non-radical pathways involving the formation of SO4−·, ·OH, O2−·, and 1O2 as well as electron transfer. Calculations based on density functional theory were used to propose potential degradation pathways of MO. The Fe–C/PDS process exhibited high adaptability to inorganic anions and natural organic matter in aquatic environments and high removal efficiencies of various organic pollutants.

Abstract:Selective removal of target organic pollutants in complex water quality of municipal sewage is extremely important for the deep treatment of water quality. Here, energetic MOF and Fe-MOF are doped in electrostatic spinning process to adjust the structure and composition of the catalysts, active oxygen species (ROSs), realizing the selective removal of organic pollutants. Non-azo and azo pollutants are selected as target pollutants. Catalysts PCFe-8 with Fe nanoclusters, EPCFe-8 with Fe-Nx, and EPC-8 without Fe doping are used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading pollutants. The results show that the PCFe-8/PMS system can produce the most SO4− and exhibit superior removal of azo pollutants, whereas the degradation behavior of non-azo pollutants is more inclined to occur in the EPCFe-8/PMS system and the EPC-8/PMS system. This work provides a reference for elucidating the relationship between catalyst structure and components, types of ROSs, and selective degradation of pollutants.
Biomass Energy Driven Solar Photo-Electro-Fenton System for Perfluorooctanoic Acid Mineralization

Abstract:The smart eco-friendly biomass energy driven electrical degradation system was established by coupling of glucose fuel cells (GFC) and solar photo-electro-Fenton (SPEF) processes, which was proposed for the green, economical and efficient degradation of perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA). The CoFe alloy nanoparticles with oxygen defects (O*) based on metal-organic frameworks (MOF) were decorated on polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-driven carbon nanofiber (CNF) membrane to obtain the bifunctional photocathode (CoFe-OVs@CNF) with both extraordinary photo-catalytic and electro-catalytic abilities. PFOA was highly mineralized on CoFe-OVs@CNF through the synergy of photocatalytic oxidation and electro-Fenton processes. Moreover, the energy consumption for degradation was generated from direct electro-oxidation of glucose as the clean power on anode (GFC). The possible mechanism and degradation pathway for PFOA mineralization was investigated in detail according to intermediate analysis, active species verification and the valence state change of Co and Fe on cathode. Besides, the toxicity evolution during PFOA degradation was also evaluated to deeper insight into risk assessment of intermedia products and relative toxicity, intending to prove the potential for practical elimination of PFOA and other toxicity recalcitrant pollutants in wastewater by GFC-SPEF system.
Controllable Generation of Sulfate and Hydroxyl Radicals to Efficiently Degrade Perfluorooctanoic Acid in Cathode-Dominated Electrochemical Process

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process (SO4 center dot--AOP) has been considered as a potential PFOA treatment option. The synergistic effect of SO4 center dot- and hydroxyl radicals (HO center dot) favors the mineralization of PFOA. However, research regarding the optimal PFOA degradation pathway with controllable SO4 center dot- and HO center dot is limited. Here, we proposed a cathode-mediated electrochemical process for efficiently removing PFOA through the in situ generation of SO4 center dot- and HO center dot. Iron-nickel codoped carbon aerogel (FexNiC) were designed as cathode for synergistically activating peroxymonosulfonate (PMS) and oxygen (O-2). Fe0.6NiC with optimized CSO4 center dot- (0.385 mM) and C-HO center dot (0.175 mM) exhibited high PFOA degradation efficiency (83.8%), TOC removal (75.9%), and defluorination rate (63.6%). DFT calculations and experimental studies confirmed that SO4 center dot--involved steps promote one-electron transfer from ionic C7F15COO- to SO4 center dot-, and HO center dot-involved steps yield short-chain PFCAs. The actual application for pretreatment and deep-treatment of fluorochemical wastewater in the conventional treatment systems promoted the PFOA mineralization efficiency. It can be preferable to optimize the ratio of CSO4 center dot- and C-HO center dot in this cathode-mediated electrochemical process to rapidly and economically mineralize PFOA.
MOFs-derived Mn/C Composites Activating Peroxymonosulfate for Efficient Degradation of Sulfamethazine: Kinetics, Pathways, and Mechanism

Abstract:Both manganese oxides (MnO x ) and carbon materials hold promise for persulfate activation to remediate polluted waterbodies. However, the aggregation of MnO x during the calcination synthesis and lower activity to persulfate of carbon materials seriously limit their industrial application. In this work, two Mn/C composites (MnO x -NA and MnO x -A) were synthesized from manganese-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) under nitrogen atmosphere and air atmosphere calcination respectively. The prepared MnO x -NA exhibited more excellent peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation performance than MnO x -A, and almost 100% sulfamethazine (SMT) could be removed by the MnO x -NA/PMS system within 30min. Moreover, the MnO x -NA/PMS system exhibited impressive stability even after 10 cycles and displayed high anti-interference ability to Cl − , ClO 4 − , CO 3 2− , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − and humic acid (HA). In addition, the oxidation system could efficiently remove SMT in different aqueous matrices. Three possible pathways of SMT degradation were proposed according to the LC-MS analysis. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), quenching experiments, and cyclic voltammetry experiments revealed that SMT degradation predominantly occurred through a catalyst-mediated electron transfer pathway. Material characterization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis showed that the derived carbon species strengthened the MnO x -NA's electron-transfer capability and promoted the uniform distribution of MnO x particles on the carbon materials surface, which significantly improved MnO x -NA's PMS activation performance. This study introduces a facile method for the design of Mn/C composites PMS activator and provides theoretical guidance for water pollution remediation.

Abstract:Using nitrate saturated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101-NH2(Fe) as precursors, N, O co-doped carbon/Fe composites (NOC/Fe-MIL) were synthesized by carbonization for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade sulfadiazine (SDZ). N and O species were doped into the carbon matrix by adsorbed nitrate, increasing the degradation rate of SDZ by 2.80 times compared to the original materials (NC/Fe-MIL). N, O co-doping not only increased the charge transfer rate on the materials surface, but also provided more pyridine N, CO groups and defects as main active sites for enhancing the adsorption to PMS indicated by DFT calculations, thus promoting the generation of O2− and 1O2 to degrade SDZ. More importantly, the NOC/Fe-MIL/PMS system still exhibited stable degradation performance in a wide pH range and in the presence of background anions, which can be used in a variety of complex water matrices and regenerated by heating, enabling it to be applied to practical wastewater treatment. This work will provide a general approach for preparing heteroatom modified materials and new insights for exploring critical roles of N and O species in PMS activation.
