Abstract:Fluoranthene (FLT) has received mounting focus due to its hazardous properties and frequent occurrence in groundwater. In this study, sulfidated nano zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) was selected as an efficient catalyst for activating persulfate (PS) to degrade FLT. The effects of reagent doses, various water conditions (pH, anions, and humic acid), and the presence of surfactants on FLT degradation were investigated. Radical probe experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum detection, and scavenging tests were performed to identify the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the system. The results showed that in the PS/S-nZVI system, 96.2% of FLT was removed within 120 min at the optimal dose of PS = 0.07 mM and S-nZVI = 0.0072 g L−1. S(-II) in the S-nZVI surface layer promoted Fe(II) regeneration. Furthermore, HO• and SO4−• were identified as the main contributors to FLT degradation. The intermediates of FLT degradation were detected by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and a possible FLT degradation pathway was proposed. Finally, the effective degradation of two other common polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (naphthalene and phenanthrene) demonstrated the broad-spectrum reactivity of the PS/S-nZVI process. In conclusion, these findings strongly demonstrate that the PS/S-nZVI process is a promising alternative for the remediation of PAH-contaminated groundwater.

Abstract:Fe3C/Fe decorated N-doped magnetic carbon materials (denoted as Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x) were successfully fabricated via facile one-pot calcination of MIL-88B(Fe) with a green precursor of melamine. Benefiting from the co-existence of sp2-hybridized C–π moieties, oxygen-containing groups (CO and O–CO), N-doping species and ferreous nanoparticles (FNPs), the as-obtained Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited excellent activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ultrafast elimination of various emerging organic contaminants with high mineralization capacities. Inspired by the unique nanotube morphology and encapsulation of FNPs, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 possessed trace Fe leaching and can be magnetically separated for an easy recycling. Combining with competitive radical scavenging tests, electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical analysis and in-situ Raman spectra, the singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron-transfer can be accounted for the organic pollutant removal. Because of that, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited good resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matters (NOMs). It was fascinating that Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 achieved satisfactory treatment efficiency for real pharmaceutical wastewater.

Abstract:A facile, green and easily-scalable method of synthesizing stable and effective nano zero-valent iron (nZVI)‑carbon composites for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was highly desirable for in-situ groundwater remediation. This study developed a two-step hydrothermally assisted carbothermal reduction method to prepare nZVI-encapsulated carbon composite (Fe@C) using rice straw and ferric nitrate as precursors. The hydrothermal reactions were conducive to iron loading, and carbothermal temperature was crucial for the aromatization and graphitization of hydrothermal carbonaceous products, the reductive transformation of iron oxides into nZVI and the development of porous structure in composites. At carbothermal temperature of 800 °C following hydrothermal reactions, the stable Fe@C800 with nZVI encapsulated in the spherical carbon shell was obtained and exhibited the best catalytic performance for PMS activation and the degradation of monochlorobenzene (MCB) in a wide range of pH values (3-11) with removal efficiency after 120 min reaction and first-order kinetic rate constant (k1) of 98.7% and 0.087 min-1 respectively under the optimum conditions of 10 mM PMS and 0.2 g·L-1 Fe@C800. The inhibiting effects of common co-existed anions (i.e., Cl-, HCO3- and H2PO4-) and humic acid in groundwater on the removal of MCB in Fe@C800/PMS system was also investigated. Both OH-dominated radical processes and nonradical pathways involving 1O2 and surface electron transfers were accounted for PMS activation and MCB removal. The inner nZVI was protected by the carbon shell, endowing Fe@C800 with high reactivity and good reusability. Additionally, 81.2% and 73.5% of MCB removal rates were achieved in tap water and actual contaminated groundwater respectively. This study not only provided a novel strategy to synthesize highly effective and stable nZVI‑carbon composites using the agricultural biomass waste for PMS induced oxidation of organic contaminants in groundwater, but also enhanced the understanding on the activation mechanism of iron‑carbon based catalysts towards PMS.

Abstract:In this study, the removal performance and degradation mechanisms of fluoranthene (FLT) in sodium percarbonate (SPC) activated by Fe(II) system were investigated, in which 97.5% removal of FLT could be achieved within 15 min when the concentrations of SPC and Fe(II) were 0.03 and 0.2 mM, respectively. The presence of HO·, O2−· and 1O2 was demonstrated by probe tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detections, and scavenging experiments further proved that the leading reactive oxygen species (ROSs) contributed to FLT removal in SPC/Fe(II) system was HO·. The p-hydroxybenzoic acid analytical result (the reaction product between benzoic acid and HO·) found that 66.5% of HO· in the system was produced in the first 5 min of the reaction. Several intermediates of FLT were detected by GC–MS and three probable FLT degradation pathways were proposed. The effect of SPC dosage, Fe(II) concentration, initial solution pH and inorganic anions (Cl− and HCO3−) on FLT degradation were assessed. 90.3% FLT was removed in actual groundwater when the dosages of SPC and Fe(II) were 0.15 and 1.0 mM, respectively. This result indicated that FLT removal could be improved by elevating the dosages of SPC and Fe(II) and adjusting the initial solution pH to 5.0, confirming the effective removal of FLT in actual groundwater in SPC/Fe(II) system. Overall, this study demonstrated that SPC/Fe(II) system has broad prospective in the remediation of FLT-contaminated groundwater.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an emerging pollutant that is non-biodegradable and presents severe environmental and human health risks. In this study, we present an effective and mild approach for PFOA degradation that involves the use of nitrogen-doped carbon foam anchored with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI@NCF) to activate low concentration peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the treatment. The nZVI@NCF/PMS system efficiently removed 84.4% of PFOA (2.4 μM). The active sites of nZVI@NCF including Fe0 (110) and graphitic nitrogen played crucial roles in the degradation. Electrochemical analyses and density functional theory calculations revealed that nZVI@NCF acted as an electronic donor, transferring electrons to both PMS and PFOA during the reaction. By further analyzing the electron paramagnetic resonance and byproducts, it was determined that electron transfer and singlet oxygen were responsible for PFOA degradation. Three degradation pathways involving decarboxylation and surface reduction of PFOA in the nZVI@NCF/PMS system were determined. Finding from this study indicate that nZVI@NCF/PMS systems are effective in degrading PFOA and thus present a promising persulfate-advanced oxidation process technology for PFAS treatment.

Abstract:Electro-Fenton (EF) is a promising and green technology for environmental remediation. However, traditional EF often suffers from iron sludge production, leading to poor pH adaptation and secondary pollution. In this work, we synthesized a three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanotube architecture containing nitrogen and oxygen heteroatoms on carbon fibre paper (3D-NOCNTs/CFP) as an indirect catalyst for a metal-free EF process for the removal of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP). The dependence of the content and the type of the functional groups in the carbon plane on the pyrolysis temperature was studied through XPS measurements. This binder-free electrode has been identified as a bifunctional catalyst that can catalyze a high H2O2 yield process and a subsequent in-situ generation of ⋅OH via an O2 reduction reaction (ORR). Thus the generated ⋅OH radicals can directly participate in the oxidative degradation of 4-CP and the utilization of iron can be avoided in the EF process. The optimized electrode could remove 99.3 % 4-CP in 120 min and exhibits a broad suitability upon pH, an excellent capability, and a prominent stability for the degradation of 4-CP. The mechanism was explained by density function theory (DFT) calculations and the controlled experiments. Such a metal-free EF process features a promising green technology for the oxidative degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:A novel iron nanoparticles encapsulated within nitrogen and sulfur co-doped magnetic porous carbon (Fe-N-S-MPC) was proposed by one-pot pyrolysis strategy to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade 1-naphthol using low-cost lignin as precursors. The Fe-N-S-MPC was characterized for structure and properties by different characterizations. The obtained materials had the morphology of iron nanoparticles encapsulated within nitrogen and sulfur co-doped magnetic porous carbon with rich functional groups and large specific surface area, which made the materials have a good catalytic property. It was proved that the doping of nitrogen and sulfur is pivotal for improving the catalytic performance. The radical quenching experiment confirmed that sulfate radical (SO4−) and hydroxyl radical (OH) are two major reactive oxygen groups. The reaction had phenomenon of the free radicals upsurge in the early stage and the shortage in the later stage. Therefore, a mathematical model was put forward to represent the two-stage reaction kinetics. By adding oxidants in batches, the degradation effect could reach nearly 100% within 30 min. The Fe-N-S-MPC were applied to the degradation of 1-naphthol in soil and showed high degradation performance. This work provided a new type of catalytic material by the high-value utilization of waste for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Nanotechnology in remediation of water contaminated by poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances: A review

Abstract:This article gives an overview of nanotechnologies applied in remediation of water contaminated by poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in physical sorption and photochemical reactions offers a promising solution in PFAS removal because of the high surface area and the associated high reactivities of the ENMs. Modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (e.g., oxidation, applying electrochemical assistance) significantly improves their adsorption rate and capacity for PFASs removal and opens a new door for use of CNTs in environmental remediation. Modified nanosized iron oxides with high adsorption capacity and magnetic property have also been demonstrated to be ideal sorbents for PFASs with great recyclability and thus provide an excellent alternative for PFAS removal under various conditions. Literature shows that PFOA, which is one of the most common PFASs detected at contaminated sites, can be effectively decomposed in the presence of either TiO2-based, Ga2O3-based, or In2O3-based nano-photocatalysts under UV irradiation. The decomposition abilities and mechanisms of different nano-photocatalysts are reviewed and compared in this paper. Particularly, the nanosized In2O3 photocatalysts have the best potential in PFOA decomposition and the decomposition performance is closely related to the specific surface area and the amount of photogenerated holes on the surfaces of In2O3 nanostructures. In addition to detailed review of the published studies, future prospects of using nanotechnology for PFAS remediation are also discussed in this article.
Geographic Analysis of Diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children: Eastern Wisconsin, USA

Abstract:Objective: To perform a novel geographic analysis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis in Midwest United States. Method: Primary care children age 5–17 with ADHD diagnosis (N = 6833; 13.5%) were compared to those receiving well child care without ADHD diagnosis (N = 43,630) in a Wisconsin integrated medical system. Street addresses, demographic, and block group level U.S. Census 2000 data were mapped and analyzed using ArcGIS, CrimeStat III, and SaTScan. Lead levels from a State database were linked to 2,837 subjects. Univariate analysis was done by chi-square test or Mann-Whitney U test, multivariate analysis by logistic regression. Results: ADHD cases were 74% male (p = 0.0001), and more frequently diagnosed in White children (17.3%) than Blacks (10.6%), Hispanics (9.4%), or Asians (3.7%; all p values < 0.001). Overall, male gender, white race, lower block group median household income and population density, and greater distance to nearest park and airport were more predictive of ADHD (p values < 0.001). In urban Milwaukee County (865 cases/10,493 controls) male gender, white race, suburban residence, and younger age were more predictive of ADHD (p values < 0.01). Among children with ADHD diagnosis and linked lifetime lead values, those with a maximum level of 10 μg/dl or more differed significantly from controls (9.3% vs. 5.6%; p = 0.003); elevated lead remained a significant predictor of ADHD diagnosis in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Further studies are needed to determine if geographic distribution of ADHD diagnosis can be partially explained by differential efficiency of referral for diagnosis by school districts, by race/ethnicity, and/or built environment.

Abstract:The chemical degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), an –environmentally persistent contaminant, has recently attracted much attention. Still, very few reports have focused on the degradation of PFOA in soil due to the process’s non-liquid, complex system and uneasy operation. In this study, thermal treatment was applied in the remediation of PFOA contaminated soil. Complementary to thermal activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), fresh activated carbon (FAC) and modified activated carbon (NAC), which were used as heterogeneous catalysts, were incorporated into the system to promote the production of sulfate radicals (SO4 •−) and the diminution of PFOA in soil. Two portions of soils, both homogenous but one with and the other without natural organic carbon (OC), were provided to study the impact of OC on the elimination of PFOA in soil. The degradation of PFOA was initiated using the combined methods in cohesion with heat activation. During the process, the effect of temperature, the dosing amount of catalyst and oxidant, the reaction time and the volume ratio between soil and solution on the degradation of PFOA in soil were fully studied and optimized. The results showed that over a 12 h period, a PFOA (1.0 mg/kg) removal of 76% and 70% by using FAC/PMS and NAC/PMS respectively could be achieved at 60 °C. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were combined with experimental data and verify that the adsorption ability of both FAC and NAC for PFOA are 3 times stronger than that of soil grain. This greater adsorption can attract PFOA molecules from within soil and provide opportunities for interactions with oxidative radicals. This work sheds light on a much over-looked aspect of advanced oxidation of PFOA in soil systems, which might provide a potential option for the in-situ remediation of PFOA contaminated soil in the future.

Abstract:Soil contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been an environmental issue worldwide, which aggravates the ecological risks faced by animals, plants, and humans. In this work, the composites of nanoscale zero-valent iron supported on carbonylated activated carbon (nZVI-CAC) were prepared and applied to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of PAHs in contaminated soil. The prepared nZVI-CAC catalyst was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the PS/nZVI-CAC system was superior for phenanthrene (PHE) oxidation than other processes using different oxidants (PS/nZVI-CAC > PMS/nZVI-CAC > H2O2/nZVI-CAC) and it was also efficient for the degradation of other six PAHs with different structures and molar weights. Under optimal conditions, the lowest and highest degradation efficiencies for the selected PAHs were 60.8% and 90.7%, respectively. Active SO4−• and HO• were found to be generated on the surface of the catalysts, and SO4−• was dominant for PHE oxidation through quenching experiments. The results demonstrated that the heterogeneous process using activated PS with nZVI-CAC was effective for PAH degradation, which could provide a theoretical basis for the remediation of PAH-polluted soil.

Abstract:Developing high-performance non-radical degradation systems is a valuable strategy to solve the inefficiency of free radical systems in complex aqueous conditions. In this paper, nitrogen-doped carbon materials encapsulating iron-based nanoparticles (Fe@CPAnPyX) were prepared by carbonizing polyaniline-polypyrrole copolymer precursors. Fe@CPAnPyX exhibited outstanding peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalytic activity and could rapidly degrade 97.40 % of 2,4-dicholophenol (100 mg/L) within 6 min, with kinetic constant reaching 17.2 times than that of CPAnPyX without iron. Adequate reaction pathway investigations showed that, unlike most reported Fe-carbon composites, the Fe@CPAnPyX/PMS system is dominated by electron transfer pathway (97.60 %) after encapsulation of iron-based nanoparticles. The antitheses analysis, structure–activity relationship analysis and density functional theory calculations validated that the N-doped carbon shell, rich in defect and graphitic nitrogen, is the direct component involved in the reaction, while the internal iron core mainly acts as an auxiliary component significantly facilitating the electron transfer pathway by enhancing the overall conductivity and coulomb field of the material and serving as “electron resupply stations” for the external carbon shell. Benefiting from the enhanced non-radical pathway, the Fe@CPAnPyX/PMS system exhibits wide pH applicability (pH = 3.00–11.00), strong resistance to water matrixes, significant electron-rich pollutants selectivity and good reusability (92.58 % degradation efficiency was maintained in the seventh cycle). A custom-made catalytic membrane device exhibited good sustained operational stability, showing a good practical application prospect. This study provides an effective strategy to significantly enhance the non-free radical pathway of carbon-based materials, which promotes the application of non-free radical systems in complex wastewater.

Abstract:Herein, Fe(III)-doped g-C3N4 (FeCN) could efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which was prepared via a facile one-pot synthesis approach. The physical and chemical properties of the samples were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, XPS, and BET. The FeCN/PMS system displayed high activity in the degradation of several contaminants, including cationic rhodamine B (RhB), anionic methyl orange (MO), and neutral phenol. Compared to SO4·−-based advanced oxidation technology, the FeCN/PMS system is a nonradical process; high-valent iron-oxo species (FeIV = O) and singlet oxygen (1O2) are the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS). The effects of various operational parameters, such as catalyst loading, peroxymonosulfate dosage, substrate concentration, and pH, on the performance of the FeCN6/PMS system were also studied. FeCN6/PMS exhibited acceptable degradation of RhB in the presence of coexisting anions (i.e., Cl−, SO42−, NO3−, and H2PO4−) and natural organic matter (NOM).

The catalytic performance and mechanism of the materials on tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation in the PMS activation system (0.1Fe/N-CPMS) was systematically investigated. The results showed that the stable framework structure of MOFs-derived carbon conduced to encapsulate the Fe nanoparticles within the carbon skeleton, and then the xFe/N-C catalyst with hierarchical pore structure and good electrical conductivity was obtained, which significantly improved the TC catalytic performance. Notably, the 0.1Fe/N-C exhibited the greatest degradation performance achieving a degradation rate of 0.6315 min -1 , which was approximately five times higher than that of N-C. Moreover, the degradation performance of the 0.1Fe/N-C kept the stability in various interference conditions, and still remained over 80% after three cycles test. Combine with the characterization and DFT calculation, the mechanism of the TC degradation in 0.1Fe/N-CPMS system was revealed by a non-radical process dominated by electron transfer, and the degradation efficiency was greatly improved by the synergistic effect of Fe/N on the as-prepared material. The received findings provide an electron transfer tuning strategy of Fe/N co-doped carbon nanomaterials synthesis for promoting the non-radical degradation pathways in the application of organic pollutants removal.

Abstract:In this research, ascorbic acid (AA) was used to enhance Fe(II)/Fe(III)-activated permonosulfate (PMS) systems for the degradation of fluoranthene (FLT). AA enhanced the production of ROS in both PMS/Fe(II) and PMS/Fe(III) systems through chelation and reduction and thus improved the degradation performance of FLT. The results of the effect of chemical dosages on FLT removal showed that the optimal molar ratio in PMS/Fe(II)/AA/FLT and PMS/Fe(III)/AA/FLT processes were 2/2/4/1 and 5/10/5/1, respectively. In addition, the experimental results on the effect of FLT degradation under different groundwater matrixes indicated that PMS/Fe(III)/AA system was more adaptable to different water quality conditions than PMS/Fe(II)/AA system. SO4•− was the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for FLT removal through the probe and scavenging tests in both systems. Furthermore, the degradation intermediates of FLT were analyzed using gas chromatograph–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and the probable degradation pathways of FLT degradation were proposed. In addition, the removal of FLT was also tested in actual groundwater and the results showed that by increasing the dose and pre-adjusting the solution pH, 88.8 and 100% of the FLT were removed for PMS/Fe(II)/AA and PMS/Fe(III)/AA systems.

Abstract:Herein, Iron anchored in carbon-nitrogen nanosheets (Fe-CNx) catalysts were synthesized successfully through one-step in situ pyrolysis for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade sulfachloropyridazine (SCP). FeCN800/PMS could realized the complete removal SCP in 20 min (kobs = 0.644 min-1). Its reaction rates were 214.7 times higher than that in PMS system. Additionally, Fe-CN800 could effectively activate PMS in a wide range of pH (3-10.6). The relationship between the content of Fe-CNx functional groups and the catalytic performance indicated that C = O and Fe-N4 were the main active sites. The structural-functional association between active sites and reactive oxygen species (ROS) was revealed by regression analysis and Density Functional Theory calculations, indicating that C = O stimulated 1O2 production, while HV-Fe was derived from C = O and Fe-N4. Moreover, the PMS activation was enhanced via electron transfer between Fe(II) and Fe(III). Based on LCMS and Fukui index, the action of ROS during SCP decomposition was analyzed, and proposed three probable pathways for SCP degradation. The transformation pattern of the structure and toxicity of the intermediates was revealed via T.E.S.T. analysis, and plant growth experiments showed that the effect of the treated SCP solution on Brassica napus significantly decreased. Finally, Fe-CN800 exhibited excellent stability, with SCP removal remaining above 95 % in five cycles and Fe leaching concentrations lower than ones which have been reported catalysts. This work provided new insights for the precise design of more efficient PMS catalysts. It will provide a fundamental basis for the practical application in wastewater treatment based on PMS-AOPs.
Nonradical activation of Oxone over Fe-doped nitrogen carbon (Fe@NC) armor catalysts for efficient degradation of anthropogenic phenolics (p-nitrophenol, 4-chlorophenol) in groundwater matrices

Abstract:Iron-based catalysts are widely used in peroxysulfate-based AOPs but suffering from low catalytic performance at neutral pH conditions, which limits the application in groundwater remediation. Herein, this study investigated the efficacy, mechanism and long-term durability of Fe-doped nitrogen carbon (Fe@NC) armor catalysts toward peroxysulfate activation for the degradation of anthropogenic phenolics (APs) in groundwater matrices. The results showed that nonradical activation of Oxone (i.e., HSO 5 – ) was obtained over the as-prepared Fe-3 % @NC-700 catalyst, high-valent Fe species (Fe(IV)O) and 1 O 2 were identified as the dominant reactive species for the efficient degradation of APs by experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Notably, the DFT results indicated that HSO 5 – was favorably adsorbed on the Fe atoms owing to the electrostatic interaction, which transformed exothermically into SO 4 2– and 1 O 2 over Fe 3 C, accompanied by the generation of Fe(IV)O. Additionally, the Fe-3 % @NC-700 catalyst displayed long-term activity for in situ activation of Oxone in groundwater matrices without pH adjustment, resulting in ΔAPs: ΔOxone stoichiometry efficiencies at 4.2–5.0 % . Wheat seeds germination tests revealed that the biotoxicity of the treated water was reduced notably by the present catalytic system, which holds large potential application in treatment of APs-contaminated groundwater.

Abstract:On behalf of solving the problem of phenol pollution in water environment, Fe/N co-doped porous hydrochar (Fe-N-PHC) as environmentally friendly catalyst prepared by agricultural waste bamboo shoot shells (BSS) as biomass was utilized to activate persulfate (PS) on phenol degradation. Under optimal reaction conditions, the degradation efficiency of phenol in Fe-N-PHC/PS system could achieve 100 % within 60 min, which was much higher than that of PHC/PS system (43.6 %). The significant role of N and Fe species for phenol degradation was confirmed by XPS analysis. Notably, Fe-N-PHC had a rich pore structure, CO and pyrrolic N as active sites were in favour of producing reactive oxygen species (ROSs). At the same time, the edge defects and pyridine N on Fe-N-PHC played a role in enhancing electron transfer. In addition, Fe cycle occurred on Fe-N-PHC surface contributed to PS activation for phenol removal. Results showed that Fe-N-PHC/PS system had high reusability, strong adaptability in different pH (3.0–11.0), co-existing substances and water bodies, and the degradation efficiency of phenol was maintained above 75 %. This study enriched the way of agricultural waste resource utilization, and provided an economical and feasible method for innovatively preparing eco-friendly carbon-based catalysts for water pollution remediation.
