Abstract:Removal of neonicotinoids (NEOs) from contaminated water is of great importance for both ecological environment and human health. However, conventional Fenton process might be insufficient for NEOs removal due to short lifetime for generated HO • and limited Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle. Advancing Fenton process to produce singlet oxygen can be an effective route to improve its efficacy for NEOs removal. Herein, we developed a molybdenum sulfide modified ceramic membrane-integrated Fenton-like system to achieve efficient catalytic removal of NEOs. The reduced Mo 0 and Mo 4+ could promote the reduction process of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , improving the activation efficiency of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and the generation of superoxide radical (O 2 •− ). Consequently, the coexisting Mo 6+ reacted with O 2 •− to generate 1 O 2 . The membrane enabled the pollutants to adequately contact oxidants due to the enhanced convective mass transfer. The functionalized membrane exhibited stable catalytic performance for clothianidin (CLO, a kind of NEOs, 10 mg/L) removal (degradation efficiency > 85%). The presence of 1 O 2 enabled the dechlorination and hydroxylation of CLO and thus reduced the toxicity of wastewater. Our work sheds light on the use of functionalized ceramic membrane integrated catalytic Fenton system for effective environmental remediation.

Abstract:Neonicotinoid pesticides in aquatic environments pose a risk to the sustainability of ecosystems and human health. However, there is limited research on the removal of these pesticides from aquatic systems. In this study, biochar doped with different Fe/Mn ratios (FeMnBC) were prepared at various pyrolysis temperatures and used for the degradation of a typical neonicotinoid pesticide, thiamethoxam (TMX), by activated persulfate (PS). From the experimental results, it is known that the biochar with a Fe/Mn ratio of 3/1 prepared at 600 °C has the most excellent removal efficiency. Optimal degradation conditions were investigated, and under these conditions, TMX removal rates of up to 99.0 % in 90 min were achieved. The applicability of this system in natural surroundings were tested by investigating the effects of inorganic anions and humic acid and in real water samples on TMX removal. In addition, the TMX removal remainly reach to 90.0 % by FeMn-BC activated PS and basically no change after five reuse cycles. Free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis revealed that SO 4 − and OH radicals on the catalyst surface were the main radicals promoting TMX degradation. Combining the catalyst characterization and experimental results, the possible mechanisms were proposed: the interaction of iron and manganese ions and the oxygen-containing functional groups on the catalyst surface together promote the generation of reactive radicals. This study provides a novel approach for removing neonicotinoid pesticides using modified biochar.

Abstract:<p>Neonicotinoids (NEOs), as the most widely used pesticides, pose a serious threat to water ecosystems, especially clothianidin (CLO). However, the degradation behavior of CLO, as a new type of persistent organic pollutant, is rarely studied in wastewater treatment. To bridge this gap, heterogeneous electro-Fenton system using three-dimension electrodes made of biochar-supported zero-valent iron nanoparticle hybrid material (NZVI–BC), abbreviated as 3D–ICE–EF system, is invented and initially applied in CLO wastewater degradation, without the addition of Fenton reagent. NZVI–BC in 3D–ICE–EF system can concentrate CLO on electrodes by excellent adsorption and effectively eliminate it to achieve self-cleaning effect. In addition, the deposition of iron mud (Fe(OH)<sub>3</sub>) and the circular utilization of Fe in Fenton system is effectively improved by the addition of hydroquinone (HQ) in 3D–ICE–EF system. The pH applicable scope of Fenton system is extended to alkaline condition by the applications of NZVI–BC electrodes. The increase in the acidity of electrolyte is considered the primary reason of the high degradation efficiency of CLO in 3D–ICE–EF system at an initial pH of 9.0. The degradation performance of 3D–ICE–EF system tends to be promoted by the increase of current intensity and air flow rate. Seven plausible mechanisms of CLO degradation were identified in 3D–ICE–EF system. The ecotoxicity evaluation of degradation products indicated that CLO degradation in 3D–ICE–EF system exhibits a remarkable tendency to reduce toxicity levels.</p>

Abstract:The persistence in the environment and possible harmful effects of neonicotinoid insecticides have raised some concerns, which have led to the proposal of various measures for their remediation. The aim of this work was to study the elimination of five neonicotinoids (thiamethoxam (THM), imidacloprid (IMI), clothianidin (CLO), thiacloprid (THC), and acetamiprid (ACE)) using ferrate (Fe(VI)) as the oxidizing agent. Firstly, second-order rate constants for the reactions of neonicotinoids with Fe(VI) were determined at different pHs. The most reactive compound was THC, with a rate constant of 400 ± 43 M −1 s −1 at pH 8 (the optimum pH considering the predominance of the most reactive species (HFeO 4 − ) and the decreasing self-decomposition of Fe(VI) with pH), followed by CLO (10.7 ± 1.7 M −1 s −1 ), THM (9.7 ± 0.7 M −1 s −1 ), and IMI (2.5 ± 0.6 M −1 s −1 ). ACE did not significantly react with Fe(VI). The oxidation of the selected pollutants in secondary effluents by Fe(VI) was rather slow, and only THC could be efficiently removed. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) exerted a negative influence on the removal of the neonicotinoids of moderate reactivity with Fe(VI) (CLO, THM, and IMI). The additional presence of peroxymonosulfate (Fe(VI)/PMS system) slightly increased the removal of neonicotinoids due to the formation of hydroxyl and sulfate radicals. Finally, the application of the Fe(VI)/sulfite system considerably increased the oxidation rate of the selected pollutants, with enhanced formation of hydroxyl and, especially, sulfate radicals. Overall, these results suggest that the Fe(VI)/sulfite system has significant potential to address environmental and health concerns associated with neonicotinoids in water sources with low NOM content.

MoS2 coupled with ball milling co-modified sludge biochar to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate for neonicotinoids degradation: Dominant roles of SO4•-, 1O2 and surface-bound radicals

Abstract:An efficient catalyst of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) coupled with ball milling modified sludge biochar (BMSBC) was prepared to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for neonicotinoids elimination. As expected, 95.1% of imidacloprid (IMI) was degraded by PMS/BMSBC system within 60 min and it was accompanied by the outstanding mineralization rate of 71.9%. The superior pore structures, rich defects, oxygen-containing functional groups and grafted MoS2 on BMSBC offered excellent activation performance for PMS. The influencing factor experiments demonstrated that PMS/BMSBC system performed high anti-interference to wide pH range and background constituents (e.g., inorganic ions and humic acid). Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis revealed that SO4•-, 1O2, and surface-bound radicals played critical roles in IMI degradation. Electron donors on biochar activated PMS, producing surface radicals. The lone pair electrons within the Lewis basic site of C=O on BMSBC enhanced PMS decomposition by facilitating the cleavage of the -O-O- bond in PMS to release 1O2. The activation process of PMS by MoS2 accelerated the oxidation of Mo (IV) to Mo (VI) to generate SO4•-. Based on the transformed products (TPs), four degradation pathways of IMI in PMS/BMSBC system were suggested, and all TPs toxicity levels were lower than that of IMI by ECOSAR analysis. Additionally, BMSBC exhibited outstanding sustainable catalytic activity towards PMS activation with the well accepted degradation rate of 71.3% for IMI even after five reuse cycles. PMS/BMSBC system also exhibited satisfactory degradation rates (>71.8%) for IMI in various real waters (e.g., sewage effluent and livestock wastewater). Furthermore, PMS/BMSBC system also offered a favorable broad-spectrum elimination performance for other typical neonicotinoids (e.g., thiamethoxam, clothianidin, thiacloprid) with the degradation rates over 98%. This study has developed a desirable neonicotinoids purification technology in view of its high degradation/mineralization rate, outstanding detoxification performance, satisfied anti-interference to ambient conditions and sustainable sludge management.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have become promising water treatment technologies in recent years. The redox cycle between transitional metals in heterogeneous catalysis is essential for continuous activation of PMS and efficient removal of pollutants. In this work, we prepared Fe 3 O 4 using precipitation method and subsequently added Ni aqueous solution to synthesize Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides. Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides show efficient PMS activation ability, causing the degradation of 96.8 % trichloroethylene (TCE) after 40 min with the dosage of Fe, Ni and PMS at 0.2, 0.1 and 0.2 mM, respectively. The catalyst concentration normalized TCE degradation rate constant of Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides/PMS system reaches 1.48 L g −1 min −1 . Nonradical pathway is dominant at the initial stage of the reaction which generates high-valent metals, SO 5 • − and indirectly produces 1 O 2 . 1 O 2 and dissolved O 2 together participate in the O 2 cycling, •OH generation, and electron transfer involving the reduction of trivalent metals. Divalent metals react with PMS to generate strong oxidative •OH and SO 4 • − through radical pathway in later stage. TCE is degraded and dechlorinated by multiple reactive species in Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides/PMS system. The optimum Ni/Fe ratio of catalysts under the studied conditions was 0.50. Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides show high reactivity and stability in real water matrices, demonstrating Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides are promising catalysts for PMS activation to degrade pollutants in contaminated water.

Abstract:Novel catalysts with multiple active sites and rapid separation are required to effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of organic pollutants from water. Therefore, an integrated catalyst for PMS activation was developed by directly forming Co-Fe Prussian blue analogs on a three-dimensional porous nickel foam (NF), which were subsequently phosphorylated to obtain cobalt-iron bimetallic phosphide (FeCoP@NF). The FeCoP@NF/PMS system efficiently degraded dye wastewater within 20 min. The system exhibited excellent catalytic degradation over a broad pH range and at high dye concentrations due to the presence of unique asymmetrically charged Coa+ and Pb- dual active sites formed by cobalt phosphides within FeCoP@NF. These active sites significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of PMS. The activation mechanism of PMS involves phosphorylation that accelerates electron transfer from FeCoP@NF to PMS, to generate SO4·-, ·OH, O2·-, and 1O2 active species. Three-dimensional FeCoP@NF could be readily recycled and showed good stability for PMS activation. In this study, a highly efficient, stable, and readily recyclable integrated catalyst was developed. This catalyst system effectively resolves the separation and recovery issues associated with conventional powder catalysts and has a wide range of potential applications in wastewater treatment.
Effective Heterogeneous Fenton-Like Degradation of Antibiotics by Ferroferric Oxide Nanoparticle Coated Reduced Iron Powder with Accelerated Fe(II)/Fe(III) Redox Cycling

Abstract:Heterogeneous Fenton-like process based on Fe-based catalysts is an effective technology to degrade the emerging organic pollutants in the water and wastewater such as tetracycline (TC). However, the kinetically limited redox cycling between Fe2+ and Fe3+ is still a persistent challenge for its widespread application. To address this issue, we designed a novel Fe-based catalyst by coating reduced iron powder (RIP) with ferroferric oxide nanoparticles (FONP@RIP) using a simple chemical co-precipitation method. The reduced iron could rapidly reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II) and accelerate the cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III) in the heterogenous Fenton-like system. Benefiting from the accelerated cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III), TC could be efficiently degraded in the FONP@RIP/H2O2 system over a wide pH range 3-6, with a removal efficiency of 94.5% within 60 min. The predominant reactive oxygen species were identified as •OH and HO2•. Based on the identified intermediates, the possible pathway of TC degradation was deduced and the toxicity of pollutants could also be significantly reduced during the degradation process. Moreover, FONP@RIP exhibited stable catalytic performance during the multiple cyclic tests with only a marginal loss of catalytic components. This study presents a new design strategy of catalyst for heterogeneous Fenton-like processes, which provides a promising way for the degradation of residual antibiotics in water and wastewater.

Abstract:This study firstly reported the in-situ preparation of nitrogen-doped graphene oxide-supported nano Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@NRGO) by ionizing radiation. The conversion of Fe(II) to iron oxide was modulated by absorbed dose in solution, which regulated the catalytic activity of Fe3O4/NRGO. When the initial concentration of Fe(II) was 0.5 mM and the absorbed dose was 10 kGy, the as-prepared catalyst (Fe3O4@NRGO-10) showed superior catalytic activity for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade phenol. In the presence of 0.4 mM PMS and 0.5 g/L Fe3O4@NRGO-10, the pseudo first-order kinetic rate of phenol degradation reached 0.0286 min-1. Sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals and high-valent iron oxo made major contribution to phenol degradation. The su-perior catalytic activity of Fe3O4@NRGO-10 might be attributed to the synergistic effect of NRGO and Fe3O4, in which NRGO promoted the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Fe3O4@NRGO-10 exhibited good stability in the cycling experiments. In addition to phenol, the Fe3O4@NRGO-10/PMS system could degrade sulfamethoxazole, bisphenol A and atrazine, indicating the wide applicability. This study reported a facile way to prepare carbon-supported metal oxide catalysts and convenient way to modulate the catalytic activity by absorbed dose.
Strong enhancement on electron transfer pathway of peroxymonosulfate activation for rapid organic pollutant degradation in wastewater by iron encapsulated into nitrogen-doped carbon: Iron-cores as electron supply stations

Abstract:Developing high-performance non-radical degradation systems is a valuable strategy to solve the inefficiency of free radical systems in complex aqueous conditions. In this paper, nitrogen-doped carbon materials encapsulating iron-based nanoparticles (Fe@CPAnPyX) were prepared by carbonizing polyaniline-polypyrrole copolymer precursors. Fe@CPAnPyX exhibited outstanding peroxymonosulfate (PMS) catalytic activity and could rapidly degrade 97.40 % of 2,4-dicholophenol (100 mg/L) within 6 min, with kinetic constant reaching 17.2 times than that of CPAnPyX without iron. Adequate reaction pathway investigations showed that, unlike most reported Fe-carbon composites, the Fe@CPAnPyX/PMS system is dominated by electron transfer pathway (97.60 %) after encapsulation of iron-based nanoparticles. The antitheses analysis, structure–activity relationship analysis and density functional theory calculations validated that the N-doped carbon shell, rich in defect and graphitic nitrogen, is the direct component involved in the reaction, while the internal iron core mainly acts as an auxiliary component significantly facilitating the electron transfer pathway by enhancing the overall conductivity and coulomb field of the material and serving as “electron resupply stations” for the external carbon shell. Benefiting from the enhanced non-radical pathway, the Fe@CPAnPyX/PMS system exhibits wide pH applicability (pH = 3.00–11.00), strong resistance to water matrixes, significant electron-rich pollutants selectivity and good reusability (92.58 % degradation efficiency was maintained in the seventh cycle). A custom-made catalytic membrane device exhibited good sustained operational stability, showing a good practical application prospect. This study provides an effective strategy to significantly enhance the non-free radical pathway of carbon-based materials, which promotes the application of non-free radical systems in complex wastewater.

Abstract:Nonradical species with great resistance to interference have shown great advantages in complex wastewater treatment. Herein, a novel system constructed by biodegradable tetrakis-(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrinatoiron (III) (Fe III -TCPP) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was proposed for facile decontamination. Nonradical pathway is observed in Fe III -TCPP/PMS, where 1 O 2 and high-valent iron-oxo species play dominant roles. The genres and valence of high-valent iron-oxo species, including iron (IV)-oxo porphyrin radical-cationic species [OFe IV -TCPP •+ ] and iron (IV)-hydroxide species [Fe IV -TCPP(OH)], are ascertained, along with their generation mechanism. The axial ligand on the iron axial site affects the ground spin state of Fe III -TCPP, further influencing the thermodynamic reaction pathway of active species. With trace catalyst in micromoles, Fe III -TCPP exhibits high efficiency by degrading bisphenol S (BPS) completely within 5 min, while Co 2+ /PMS can only achieve a maximum of 26.2% under identical condition. Beneficial from nonradical pathways, Fe III -TCPP/PMS demonstrates a wide pH range of 3–10 and exhibits minimal sensitivity to interference of concomitant materials. BPS is primarily eliminated through β-scission and hydroxylation. Specifically, 1 O 2 electrophilically attacks the C–S bond of BPS, while high-valent iron-oxo species interacts with BPS through an oxygen-bound mechanism. This study provides novel insights into efficient activation of PMS by iron porphyrin, enabling the removal of refractory pollutants through nonradical pathway.

Abstract:Developing high-performance catalytic systems for eliminating contaminants effectively in water has received a lot of attention. However, the complexity of practical wastewater poses a challenge for degrading organic pollutants. Non-radical active species with strong resistance to interference have shown great advantages in degrading organic pollutants under complex aqueous conditions. Herein, a novel system was constructed by Fe(dpa)Cl 2 (FeL, dpa = N, N' -(4-nitro-1,2-phenylene) dipicolinamide) activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The mechanism study verified that the FeL/PMS system has high efficiency in producing high-valent iron-oxo and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) to degrade various organic pollutants. In addition, the chemical bonding between PMS and FeL was elucidated by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The FeL/PMS system could remove 96% Reactive Red 195 (RR195) in 2 min, which was much higher than other systems involved in this study. More attractively, the FeL/PMS system demonstrated general resistance to interference from common anions (Cl − , HCO 3 − , NO 3 − and SO 4 2− ), humic acid (HA) and pH changes and were thus compatible with various natural waters. This work provides a new approach for producing non-radical active species, which is a promising catalytic system for water treatment.

Abstract:Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are synthetic insecticides with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity and outstanding efficacy. However, their extensive use and persistence in the environment have resulted in the accumulation and biomagnification of NEOs, posing significant risks to non-target organisms and humans. This review provides a summary of research history, advancements, and highlighted topics in NEOs remediation technologies and mechanisms. Various remediation approaches have been developed, including physiochemical, microbial, and phytoremediation, with microbial and physicochemical remediation being the most extensively studied. Recent advances in physiochemical remediation have led to the development of innovative adsorbents, photocatalysts, and optimized treatment processes. High-efficiency degrading strains with well-characterized metabolic pathways have been successfully isolated and cultured for microbial remediation, while many plant species have shown great potential for phytoremediation. However, significant challenges and gaps remain in this field. Future research should prioritize isolating, domesticating or engineering high efficiency, broad-spectrum microbial strains for NEO degradation, as well as developing synergistic remediation techniques to enhance removal efficiency on multiple NEOs with varying concentrations in different environmental media. Furthermore, a shift from pipe-end treatment to pollution prevention strategies is needed, including the development of green and economically efficient alternatives such as biological insecticides. Integrated remediation technologies and case-specific strategies that can be applied to practical remediation projects need to be developed, along with clarifying NEO degradation mechanisms to improve remediation efficiency. The successful implementation of these strategies will help reduce the negative impact of NEOs on the environment and human health.
Boosting the activation of Peroxymonosulfate and the degradation of metronidazole over FeCo2O4 quantum dots anchored on β-FeOOH Nanosheets: Inspired from octahedral Co(II) with missing angle

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by bimetallic Co/Fe oxides, especially spinel FeCo2O4, is a promising way in decontaminating organic pollutants in wastewaters. However, it suffers from low efficiency and the intrinsic catalytic mechanisms are still poorly understood. Therefore, we applied lattice VOs (oxygen vacancies) adjustment strategy to construct a octahedral Co(II)–enriched FeCo2O4 quantum dots anchored on β-FeOOH nanosheets composite (Co(II)-FCQDs/FNS) for boosting PMS activation during the degradation of Metronidazole (MNZ), and pure FeCo2O4 quantum dots (FCQDs) was studied as a comparison. As a result, in PMS/Co(II)-FCQDs/FNS system, 5–30 mg·L−1 MNZ could be completely degraded within 5 min with the usage of 0.05 g·L−1 catalyst, and the degradation efficiency of 100 mg·L−1 MNZ reached 99.92% within 40 min with the PMS utilization of 62.90% at the same condition, whose degradation rate constant was 6.45 times than that of the FCQDs/PMS system. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments indicated that PMS /Co(II)-FCQDs/FNS system was a pure radical-based (sulfate radicals (SO4 •−), hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radical (O2 •−) oxidation process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the generation of octahedral Co(II) derived from oxygen vacancies, improved the charge transfer in the spinel lattice while providing a new electron transfer channel from lattice Co(II)/Fe(II) to the surface of FeCo2O4. Simultaneously, strengthened the surface adsorption of HSO5 − and increased the number of unpaired electrons, thus boosting the PMS activation performance. In addition, the influence of reaction parameters and water matrix were investigated. Finally, the degradation pathway of MNZ was proposed and the toxicity of intermediates was also assessed. This work is expected to facilitate the design and application of PMS/Co(II)-FCQDs/FNS system for decontaminating organic pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:Objective: To perform a novel geographic analysis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis in Midwest United States. Method: Primary care children age 5–17 with ADHD diagnosis (N = 6833; 13.5%) were compared to those receiving well child care without ADHD diagnosis (N = 43,630) in a Wisconsin integrated medical system. Street addresses, demographic, and block group level U.S. Census 2000 data were mapped and analyzed using ArcGIS, CrimeStat III, and SaTScan. Lead levels from a State database were linked to 2,837 subjects. Univariate analysis was done by chi-square test or Mann-Whitney U test, multivariate analysis by logistic regression. Results: ADHD cases were 74% male (p = 0.0001), and more frequently diagnosed in White children (17.3%) than Blacks (10.6%), Hispanics (9.4%), or Asians (3.7%; all p values < 0.001). Overall, male gender, white race, lower block group median household income and population density, and greater distance to nearest park and airport were more predictive of ADHD (p values < 0.001). In urban Milwaukee County (865 cases/10,493 controls) male gender, white race, suburban residence, and younger age were more predictive of ADHD (p values < 0.01). Among children with ADHD diagnosis and linked lifetime lead values, those with a maximum level of 10 μg/dl or more differed significantly from controls (9.3% vs. 5.6%; p = 0.003); elevated lead remained a significant predictor of ADHD diagnosis in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Further studies are needed to determine if geographic distribution of ADHD diagnosis can be partially explained by differential efficiency of referral for diagnosis by school districts, by race/ethnicity, and/or built environment.
Ultrafast degradation of emerging organic pollutants via activation of peroxymonosulfate over Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x: Singlet oxygen evolution and electron-transfer mechanisms

Abstract:Fe3C/Fe decorated N-doped magnetic carbon materials (denoted as Fe3C/Fe@N-C-x) were successfully fabricated via facile one-pot calcination of MIL-88B(Fe) with a green precursor of melamine. Benefiting from the co-existence of sp2-hybridized C–π moieties, oxygen-containing groups (CO and O–CO), N-doping species and ferreous nanoparticles (FNPs), the as-obtained Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited excellent activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for ultrafast elimination of various emerging organic contaminants with high mineralization capacities. Inspired by the unique nanotube morphology and encapsulation of FNPs, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 possessed trace Fe leaching and can be magnetically separated for an easy recycling. Combining with competitive radical scavenging tests, electron spin resonance (ESR), electrochemical analysis and in-situ Raman spectra, the singlet oxygen (1O2) and electron-transfer can be accounted for the organic pollutant removal. Because of that, the Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 exhibited good resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matters (NOMs). It was fascinating that Fe3C/Fe@N-C-9 achieved satisfactory treatment efficiency for real pharmaceutical wastewater.

Abstract:The degradation process in the CoFe2O4/halloysite nanotubes (HNT+ peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system is dominated by 1O2. The stacking of nanotubes provides a large surface area and porous channels. The metal bonds between Co─Fe effectively slow down the leaching of metal ions. The synthesis process of catalysts is simple and convenient. Analysis of degradation pathways and toxicity ensures environmentally safety. This study proposes a novel, cost‐effective nano CoFe2O4‐decorated halloysite nanotubes (CoFe2O4/HNT) catalyst, which effectively degrades the antibiotic ornidazole (ONZ) through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. By using a simple and economical preparation method, ultra‐low amounts of CoFe2O4 are uniformly loaded onto HNTs, significantly improving the activity and stability of the catalyst. The experimental results show that the CoFe2O4/HNT+PMS system can almost completely degrade ONZ within 1 h, with good pH adaptability and resistance to anion interference. The simple synthesis process and low cost of CoFe2O4/HNT make it highly practical for large‐scale applications. Mechanism studies have shown that the synergistic effect between Co and Fe greatly improves the activation efficiency of PMS, generating reactive oxygen species (such as 1O2) that play a key role in ONZ degradation. This work not only elucidates the activation mechanism, but also provides insightful information for advanced oxidation processes (AOP). The results indicate the practicality and importance of CoFe2O4/HNT catalyst in treating harmful pollutants in water, supporting effective and sustainable water purification technologies. In addition, the study emphasizes the elasticity and adaptability of this innovative catalyst system in managing various pollutants, indicating its broad potential for environmental applications.

Fenton-Enhanced zero-valent iron powder oxidation: Investigating transformation products of antimicrobials and its removal

Abstract:The occurrence of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in water is of concern due to their hazardous effect on the environment. Such micropollutants deteriorate environmental quality and can induce antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria. Thus, removal of these emerging contaminants is a necessity and thus requires a clear understanding of the effective treatment and mechanistic approach utilized in degradation and removal. Frequently, treatment systems are optimized for the removal of contaminants while the formation of transformation products and their removal are not targeted. We utilized our established iron powder catalyzed Fe (0) Fenton Oxidation treatment to study the degradation of emerging contaminants — sulfamethoxazole, gabapentin, diuron, and triazine class pesticides. We used state-of-the-art mass spectrometry to establish the common oxidative mechanistic approach after identifying the transformation products formed during the Fe (0) Fenton Oxidation processes. Fenton transformed product was produced after 60 min reaction time when treatment was initiated after adding the optimized H2O2 and iron powder Fe (0)) in a micropollutant solution adjusted to pH 5. About 5-to-7 transformed products of each micropollutant were identified and predicted to have low toxicity risk to aquatic organisms. The oxidative degradation pathway of micropollutants illustrates the shared oxidative mechanism where the aliphatic chain of the heteroatom: Sulphur (R—S—R as thiosulphate), functional groups (R—C=O, R—COOR, R—NH2, R— NH=O—N) and alkyl chain present in the target compound was suggested as the prime region of hydroxyl radicle (•OH) attack. The tandem mass spectrometry estimated the evolution of sulfamethoxazole-transformed product formation and removal during the treatment. The informed optimization of Fe (0) Fenton treatment, confirmed through MS2 was established at 40 min reaction time at which both the sulfamethoxazole and its transformed product were reduced to trace levels (ngL-1).

Abstract:In order to develop efficient and green catalyst for organic pollutants removal, magnetic carbon supported Prussian blue nanocomposite Fe3O4@C/PB was prepared for the first time. The performance of Fe3O4@C/PB in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) was investigated. 2,4-DCP could be effectively degraded under the "Fe3O4@C/PB + PMS" system within a broad pH range of 2-9. Without pH adjustment (pH 3), 2,4-DCP (20 mg/L) was completely degraded in 50 min along with a 70% removal of TOC; while the required time for complete degradation of 2,4-DCP was shortened to 40 min under initial solution pH at 7. Fe3O4@C/PB could also activate PMS for the degradation of phenol, Acid Orange II, Reactive brilliant red X-3B, Rhodamine B and Methylene blue. The degradation rates higher than 95% could be achieved for all these contaminants within the time scale of 15-60 min. The studies of radical-quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that singlet oxygen (1O2) and superoxide radicals (O2-), rather than sulfate (SO4-) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals, were the dominant species responsible for the oxidation of organic pollutants. The plausible mechanism of the catalytic degradation was proposed and the enhanced activity of Fe3O4@C/PB was assumed to be related to the increased electron transfer owing to the synergic effect between the magnetic carbon and the mixed-valence units in PB. Fe3O4@C/PB is promising in wastewater treatment owing to its high efficiency, excellent stability and reusability, environmental friendliness and magnetic separability.
