Abstract:Sulfonated poly (aryl ether ketone sulfone) polymers (SPAEKS-PSA X) with the comb-shaped structure were prepared by grafting with 1, 3-propanesultone (PSA). The successful synthesis of SPAEKS-PSA X was confirmed by the FT-IR spectra. The morphology of the membrane was investigated by the small angle X-ray scattering and the transmission electron microscopy. The nanophase separation was brought in a comb-shaped structure between the main chains and the propyl sulfonic acid groups. The SPAEKS-PSA 15 membrane exhibited the highest conductivity of 101 mS cm(-1) under 80 degrees C and 100% relative humidity conditions (100% RH). In addition, the methanol permeability coefficients of SPAEKS-PSA X membranes (7.56 x 10(-7) to 9.44 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)) were much lower compared to Nafion (R) 117 (22.37 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)). Meanwhile, the SPAEKS-PSA X membranes also displayed excellent mechanical properties (tensile modulus >30 MPa), thermal, oxidative stabilities and fuel cell performance. Considering the parameters above, especially the elevated proton conductivities as well as high methanol resistance, the comb-shaped structure is a promising design for DMFCs applications. Sulfonated Polyaryletherketone with Pendant Benzimidazole Groups for Proton Exchange Membranes

Abstract:We synthesized a range of sulfonated polyaryletherketone (x%SCBI-SPAEK-6F) with pendant benzimidazole side groups at a tunable molar percentage (x within 5-15%) for potential application as proton exchange membrane (PEM). A systematic study had been undertaken to study the performance and the underlying structure-properties relationship of PEMs fabricated by those novel amphoteric polymers. It was found that the dimensional stability, oxidative stability and methanol resistance performance of x%SCBI-SPAEK-6F membranes were significantly improved with the increase of the benzimidazole content due to the acid-base interaction. In particular, the 5%SCBI-SPAEK-6F membrane exhibited a relative selectivity (10.5 x 10(3) S s cm(-3)) almost 20 times higher than that of Nafion117 membrane at 75 degrees C, demonstrating the significant promoted proton conductivity (0.35 S cm(-1)) and reduced methanol penetration (6 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)) by the ionic barrier. With such superior performance, these polymers are promising for the fabrication of practical proton exchange membranes in commercial fuel cells.

Abstract:Composite membranes of sulfonated poly (phthalazinone ether ketone)s (SPPEK)s and Zirconium hydrogen phosphate (ZrP) or 12-phosphotungstic acid (PWA) were prepared by direct blending method. The physicochemical properties of these composite membranes were studied through Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscope (FSEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The SPPEK/PWA composite membranes showed better properties, whose highest proton conductivity could reach 0.17 S/cm at 80 degrees C under 100% relative humidity (R.H.). Abstract:An Aquivion® E87-12S short-side-chain perfluorosulfonic acid (SSC-PFSA) membrane with equivalent weight (EW) of 870g/eq and 120μm thickness produced by Solvay Specialty Polymers was tested in a polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). For comparison, a benchmark Nafion® N115 membrane (EW 1100g/eq) of similar thickness was investigated under similar operating conditions. Both membranes were tested in conjunction with in-house prepared unsupported IrO2 anode and carbon-supported Pt cathode electrocatalysts. The electrocatalysts consisted of nanosized IrO2 and Pt particles (particle size ~2–4nm). Electrochemical tests showed better water splitting performance for the Aquivion® membrane and ionomer based membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) as compared to Nafion®. Lower ohmic drop constraints and smaller polarization resistance were observed for the electrocatalyst–Aquivion® ionomer interface indicating a better catalyst–electrolyte interface. A current density of 3.2Acm−2 for water electrolysis was recorded at 1.8V cell voltage and 90°C with the Aquivion® based MEA. Some performance decay with time was observed indicating that the system requires further optimization of the interface characteristics.

Abstract:Given the environmental concerns surrounding fluoromaterials, the use of high-cost perfluorinated sulfonic acids (PFSAs) in fuel cells and water electrolysis contradicts the pursuit of clean energy systems. Herein, we present a fluorine-free dumbbell-shaped block-graft copolymer, derived from the cost-effective triblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS), for polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs). This unique polymer shape led to the alignment of the hydrophobic-hydrophilic domains along a preferred orientation, resulting in the construction of interconnected proton channels across the membrane. A bicontinuous network allowed efficient proton transport with reduced tortuosity, leading to an exceptional ionic conductivity (249 mS cm-1 at 80 °C and 90% relative humidity (RH)), despite a low ion exchange capacity (IEC; 1.41). Furthermore, membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) prepared with our membrane exhibited stable performance over a period of 150 h at 80 °C and 30% RH. This study demonstrates a novel polymer structure design and highlights a promising outlook for hydrocarbon PEMs as alternatives to PFSAs.

Abstract:Fluorinated proton-exchange membranes (PEMs) based on graft copolymers of dehydrofluorinated polyvinylidene fluoride (D-PVDF), 3-sulfopropyl acrylate (SPA), and 1H, 1H, 2H-perfluoro-1-hexene (PFH) were prepared via free radical copolymerization and characterized for fuel cell application. The membrane morphology and physical properties were studied via small-(SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), SEM, and DSC. It was found that the crystallinity degree is 17% for PEM-RCF (co-polymer with SPA) and 16% for PEM-RCF-2 (copolymer with SPA and PFH). The designed membranes possess crystallite grains of 5–6 nm in diameter. SEM images reveal a structure with open pores on the surface of diameters from 20 to 140 nm. Their transport and electrochemical characterization shows that the lowest membrane area resistance (0.9 Ωcm2) is comparable to perfluorosulfonic acid PEMs (such as Nafion®) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based CJMC cation-exchange membranes (ChemJoy Polymer Materials, China). Key transport and physicochemical properties of new and commercial membranes were compared. The PEM-RCF permeability to NaCl diffusion is rather high, which is due to a relatively low concentration of fixed sulfonate groups. Voltammetry confers that the electrochemical behavior of new PEM correlates to that of commercial cation-exchange membranes, while the ionic conductivity reveals an impact of the extended pores, as in track-etched membranes.

Abstract:The chemical durability is a critical issue to proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for using as the electrolyte in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, chemically stable membranes were prepared by grafting organic free radical scavengers (R) including 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MIm), 3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (MTz) and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (BIm) onto backbones of polyarylethersulfone (PAES), respectively. Having a phosphoric acid (PA) doping level of around 200 wt%, the PAES-MIm and PAES-MTz membranes exhibit, separately, anhydrous proton conductivities of 78.3 and 63.3 mS cm−1 at 180 °C, tensile stress at break of 7.8 and 9.4 MPa at room temperature, and a peak power density of 423 mW cm−2 and 358 mW cm−2 at 160 °C with a fuel cell fueling with non-humidified gases of H2 and O2. The properties of the prepared PAES-MIm and PAES-MTz membranes with and without performing the Fenton tests were all investigated on tensile stress, methanol permeability, anhydrous proton conductivity, and polarization curves of single fuel cells, respectively. The results indicate that the grafted free radical scavengers significantly enhanced the chemical stability and retarded the degradation of the PAES-R membranes. After suffered the Fenton test under harsh conditions (H2O2, 3 wt%, Fe2+, 4 ppm at 68 °C) for 60 and 100 h, a peak power density of 320 and 291 mW cm−2 is still achieved at 140 °C by the acid doped PAES-MIm membranes, respectively. Characterizations on the morphology by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and structure by Raman spectroscopy of the prepared membranes were made as well.

Abstract:Proton exchange membranes (PEM) are s key component in electrolyzers and fuel cells for green hydrogen technologies. One important coming issue in these technologies is the need of reducing the amount of poly-fluoro alkyl substances (PFAS) due to their high toxicity. In the present work, we introduce a family of protic poly(ionic liquid)s based on poly(diallylmethylamonium) (PolyDAMAH) as a cationic backbone and having sulfonamides such as bis(trifluorosulfonyl)imide (TFSI) and bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI) as counter-anions. The synthesis of the poly(ionic liquid) was carried out in a three step procedure, first synthesizing the protic diallylammonium chloride monomer, then thermal radical polymerization and finally anion exchange of the chloride anion by the sulfonamide anions. The protic PolyDAMAH showed apparent molecular weights between 30-40K g/mol and glass transition values of 39 and 52 oC respectively for both homopolymers and high thermal stability up to 250 oC. From solid state NMR studies it was found that FSI- anion may allow a faster proton and anion mobility when compared to TFSI- one at dry and humid states. To find the best match, blending protic poly(ionic liquid)s with TFSI- and FSI- anions improved the mechanical characteristics of the membranes, while keeping low water uptake and high ionic conductivity. The optimized PolyDAMAH membranes were characterized by dielectric and mechanical relaxation measurements and showed more than six orders of magnitude decoupling of the ion dynamics from the mechanical relaxation. An ionic conductivity of 1.2 x 10-3 S cm-1 at 100 oC at 75% relative humidity with storage modulus higher than 2.2 x 10-5 Pa at 80 oC was obtained for the optimized blend making this a promising new PEM material with low fluorine content.

Abstract:Membrane⁻electrode assemblies (MEAs) designed for a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolyser based on a short-side chain (SSC) perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membrane, Aquivion®, and an advanced Ir-Ru oxide anode electro-catalyst, with various cathode and anode noble metal loadings, were investigated. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), in combination with performance and durability tests, provided useful information to identify rate-determining steps and to quantify the impact of the different phenomena on the electrolysis efficiency and stability characteristics as a function of the MEA properties. This technique appears to be a useful diagnostic tool to individuate different phenomena and to quantify their effect on the performance and degradation of PEM electrolysis cells.
2-Mercaptoethanesulfonic Acid as An Effective Free-Radical Scavenger in Perfluorosulfonic Acid Membrane-Based Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:Ceria nanoparticle-based free-radical scavengers for the mitigation of oxidative damage in perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA)-based polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) suffer from the drawbacks of lowered protonic conductivity and leaching in the acidic environment of a PEMFC. As an alternative to ceria, here we demonstrate that oxidative damage can be mitigated by functionalization of Nafion with 2-Mercaptoethanesulfonic acid (MESA) in different (0.1-1.0 wt%) ratio. The spectroscopic investigation indicated successful functionalization of MESA over the Nafion chain and resulting Nafion-MESA composite membranes displayed improved hydration and swelling behavior, and thermal and mechanical properties. At 60oC (95% relative humidity), the protonic conductivity of composite membranes was higher than/equivalent to that of pristine Nafion membrane; however, at ≥70°C it was ~6-8% lower. At 80oC, conductivity of Nafion-MESA-0.1wt%, Nafion-MESA-0.25wt%, pristine Nafion, and state-of-the-art Nafion-CeO2-1wt% membranes were 1.72×10−1, 1.67×10−1, 1.8×10−1, and 1.6×10−1 S∙cm−1, respectively. The fluoride emission rate value for the same membranes were 0.30, 0.17, 1.39, and 0.27 mg∙g-1, respectively, thus indicating that Nafion-MESA membranes can substitute the ceria-based membranes as a chemically stable membrane electrolyte in PEMFCs.

Novel, Fluorine-Free Membranes Based on Sulfonated Polyvinyl Alcohol and Poly(ether-block-amide) with Sulfonated Montmorillonite Nanofiller for PEMFC Applications

Abstract:Novel blend membranes containing S-PVA and PEBAX 1657 with a blend ratio of 8:2 (referred to as SPP) were prepared using a solution-casting technique. In the manufacturing process, sulfonated montmorillonite (S-MMT) in ratios of 0%, 3%, 5%, and 7% was used as a filler. The crystallinity of composite membranes has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the interaction between the components was evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). With increasing filler content, good compatibility between the components due to hydrogen bonds was established, which ultimately resulted in improved tensile strength and chemical stability. In addition, due to the sulfonated moieties of S-MMT, the highest ion exchange capacity (0.46 meq/g) and water uptake (51.61%) can be achieved at the highest filler content with an acceptable swelling degree of 22.65%. The composite membrane with 7% S-MMT appears to be suitable for application in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Amongst the membranes studied, this membrane achieved the highest current density and power density in fuel cell tests, which were 149.5 mA/cm2 and 49.51 mW/cm2. Our fluorine-free composite membranes can become a promising new membrane family in PEMFC applications, offering an alternative to Nafion membranes.

Abstract:Structure design is the primary strategy to acquire suitable ionomers for preparing proton exchange membranes (PEMs) with excellent performance. A series of comb-shaped sulfonated fluorinated poly(aryl ether sulfone) (SPFAES) membranes are prepared from sulfonated fluorinated poly(aryl ether sulfone) polymer (SPFAE) and sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) oligomer (SPAES-Oligomer). Chemical structures of the comb-shaped membranes are verified by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. The comb-shaped SPFAES membranes display more continuous hydrophilic domains for ion transfer, because the abundant cations and flexible side-chains structure possess higher mobility and hydrophilicity, which show significantly improved proton conductivity, physicochemical stability, mechanical property compared to the linear SPFAE membranes. In a H2/O2 single-cell test, the SPFAES-1.77 membrane achieves a higher power density of 699.3 mW/cm2 in comparison with Nafion® 112 (618.0 mW/cm2) at 80 °C and 100% relative humidity. This work offers a promising example for the synthesis of highly branched polymers with flexible comb-shaped side chains for high-performance PEMs.

Abstract:The perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) proton exchange membrane (PEM) is the key component for hydrogen fuel cells (FCs). We used in situ synchrotron scattering to investigate the PEM morphology evolution and found a "stream-reservoir" morphology, which enables efficient proton transport. The short-side-chain (SSC) PFSA PEM is fabricated under the guidance of morphology optimization, which delivered a proton conductivity of 193 milliSiemens per centimeter [95% relativity humidity (RH)] and 40 milliSiemens per centimeter (40% RH) at 80°C. The improved glass transition temperature, water permeability, and mechanical strength enable high-temperature low-humidity FC applications. Performance improvement by 82.3% at 110°C and 25% RH is obtained for SSC-PFSA PEM FCs compared to Nafion polymer PEM devices. The insights in chain conformation, packing mechanism, crystallization, and phase separation of PFSAs build up the structure-property relationship. In addition, SSC-PFSA PEM is ideal for high-temperature low-humidity FCs that are needed urgently for high-power-density and heavy-duty applications.

Abstract:Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) offers the ambition of combining the advantages of alkaline electrolysers, i.e. the use of cheap and plentiful catalytic materials, with those of proton exchange membrane electrolysis of water, i.e. high performance and fast response to changing operating conditions. However, the development of performing and durable anion exchange membranes is still the major challenge for the ultimate industrial adoption of AEMWE. Here, we introduce an innovative nanocomposite AEM based on trimethylammonium functionalized silica nanoscale ionic materials (NIM- N + ) incorporated in quaternized polysulfone (qPSU). The presence of NIM- N + in the hydrophilic clusters of qPSU produces a remarkable enhancement in the dimensional and thermo-mechanical stability of the composite AEM. Furthermore, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) investigations highlighted that the nanoparticles are directly involved in the transport process of hydroxide ions. This enabled qPSU/NIM- N + composite membrane to achieve impressive anionic conductivity values, e.g. about 110 mS cm −1 at 80 °C and 95% relative humidity (RH). The AEMWE single cell, equipped with this membrane, operated properly both with 1 or 0.5 M KOH solution, displaying a current density larger than 3.5 A cm −2 at 2.2 V and 80 °C.

Abstract:Intercalating expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) reinforcements and incorporating antioxidants (e.g., CeO2 and ZrO2) into perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomers are typical methods used to improve the physical and chemical durability of PFSA-based proton exchange membranes, respectively. Nevertheless, these two popular methods still suffer from respective inherent limitations, including the poor interfacial binding between hydrophobic ePTFE and polar PFSA ionomers and the migration and loss of incorporated antioxidants. To solve these two issues simultaneously, we propose a solution based on a surface sol–gel process, by which the deposition of ZrO2 coating on polydopamine-modified ePTFE skeletons not only improves the interfacial bonding of the skeletons and PFSA ionomer but also restrains the migration and loss of antioxidant additives. The results show that the ZrO2-deposited ePTFE exhibits improved hydrophilicity and the reinforced composite membranes based on the modified ePTFE skeletons with one layer of ZrO2 coating are endowed with superior proton conductivity, mechanical properties, dimensional stability, and open-circuit voltage durability. In addition, the stability of the ZrO2 coating on the ePTFE skeletons is also verified.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The aims of this study were to determine the pharmacokinetic parameters of a single dose of 200 mg oral and rectal artesunate in healthy volunteers, and to suggest a rational dosage regimen for rectal administration. The study design was a randomized open cross- over study of 12 healthy volunteers; the analytical method used was a reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography with post column derivatization and subsequent ultraviolet detection. Pharmacokinetic parameters were derived from the main metabolite α-dihydroartemisinin data due to the rapid disappearance of artesunate from the plasma. Dihydroartemisinin following oral administration of artesunate had a significantly higher AUC0-∞ (P<0.05 95% confidence interval (Cl) −1168.73, −667.61 ng.h/mL−1) and Cmax(P<0.05;95%Cl −419.73, −171.44 ng/mL− 1, and had shorter tmax (P<0.05; 95% Cl −0.97, −0.10 h) than that following rectal artesunate. There was no statistically significant difference in the elimination halflife between both routes of administration (P> 0.05; 95% Cl −0.14, 0.53 h). The relative bioavailability of rectal artesunate was [mean (coefficient of variation%)54.9(24.8%)%]. On the basis of these data an 8 hourly dosing regimen per day with rectal artesunate is proposed.

Abstract:Novel proton exchange membranes (PEMs) based on graft copoly(arylene ether sulfone)s with enhanced phase-separated morphology were prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A series of PEMs with different graft lengths and sulfonation degrees were prepared. The phase-separated morphologies were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Among the membranes prepared and evaluated, PAESPS18S2 exhibited considerably high proton conductivity (0.151 S/cm, 85 °C), benefitting from the graft polymer architecture and phase-separated morphology. The membranes also possessed excellent thermal and chemical stabilities. Highly conductive and stable copoly(arylene ether sulfone)-based membranes would be promising candidates as polymer electrolytes for fuel cell applications.

Abstract:In this work, we focus on a novel sepiolite-incorporated Aquivion composite membrane that can be operated in a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at a relative humidity (RH) below 30%. The maximum power density reduction of the developed membrane is only 0.77% at 30% RH. In the study, we demonstrated adding sepiolite grafted with fluorination groups enhanced the homogeneity of the composite membrane prepared with Aquivion compared to composite membranes prepared with natural sepiolite. In addition to functionalization, a specific acidic post-treatment enhanced fuel cell performance. The acidic treatment was intended to remove some of the Fe cations in the sepiolite to prevent Aquivion degradation. Although this effect was not evident, this treatment removed some of the Al and Mg cations, resulting in a more amorphous structure of fluorinated sepiolite with increased porosity, roughness, and lumen. This significantly enhanced the proton diffusion in the composite membranes. Compared to commercially available membranes and membranes developed by other research groups, the Aquivion/fluorinated and post-treated sepiolite composite membranes (Aq/pSEP-F5) exhibited increased swelling behavior, water uptake, mechanical property, chemical stability, proton conductivity, cell voltage, and maximum power density in the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA). Thus, they are highly advantageous and a promising alternative for the functioning of PEMFC at low relative humidity.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer membranes have enabled a variety of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices such as fuel cells and flow batteries and material conversion devices such as electrolyzers to produce hydrogen and chlorine. For decades, a small group of simple copolymers were relied on in these applications. The practical limits for conductivity through lower equivalent weight are being approached for these polymers. Recently, the community has recognized the need for new PFSA ionomers with properties tailored to the specific needs of each application. An emerging area of importance is the manipulation of the diffusion properties of these polymers. For example, fuel cell membranes need to maintain good barrier properties as thicknesses are reduced, while ionomers with increased oxygen diffusion rates are sought for fuel cell electrodes. In recent years, the class of PFSA ionomers has expanded to include new side chain structures, new comonomers, and even hydrocarbon hybrid structures.
