Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is a significant byproduct of waste-to-energy processes, and poses substantial environmental and health hazards if not treated properly. The process of Stabilization/Solidification (S/S) efficiently immobilizes hazardous elements present in the fly ash through a combination of physical and chemical mechanisms. The objective of this research is to thoroughly examine the feasibility of using chicken eggshell waste powder as a stabilizing agent for heavy metals, specifically targeting Pb, in MSWI fly ash. Experimental analysis involved varying eggshell waste to fly ash weight proportions, extending from 0.0 (control group), 7:3 up to 9.5:0.5 ratio, with designated curing durations of 2 and 72hours, and maintaining a liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio at 1.0mL/g. In the two-hour curing period, the immobilization efficiency of Pb reached 100% with the addition of only 1.5% eggshell waste. Optimal ratios for Pb stabilization in MSWI fly ash were identified: maximum 2% eggshell waste for 2-hour curing and 1.5% for 72hours due to elevated Pb and Cd levels of 7:3 ratio. Adding CaO mitigated these levels, enhancing stabilization and compliance with landfill criteria. The results demonstrated that the addition of CaO led to efficient immobilization of Pb, achieving approximately 99%. In addition, the observed enhancement in compressive strength resulting from the incorporation of CaO highlights its effectiveness in enhancing the stabilizing process of MSWI fly ash. By demonstrating the effectiveness of eggshell waste and CaO in stabilizing hazardous elements, this study advocates for scalable solutions and further research on long-term stability and environmental impacts.

Abstract:The MgO-based binder is a novel and effective material for solidifying municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA). In this study, the effect of MgO-based binders with different MgO contents on the solidification and stabilization of MSWI FA was investigated by adjusting the proportions of MgO, silica fume, and MSWI FA in the solidified system. The leaching behavior and immobilization mechanisms of Cd and Pb in the solidified bodies were focused on. The hydration products generated were characterized by XRD, FTIR, and TG analysis. The results demonstrated that the compressive strength of the solidified bodies and the immobilization efficiencies of heavy metals improved with the increase in MgO addition. The MSWI FA solidified by MgO-based binders could maintain low leaching toxicity over a wider pH range. The generated Mg-containing hydration products, including Mg(OH)2 and M-C-S-H gels, were believed to contribute to the reduction of the leaching concentrations of heavy metals. The immobilization mechanisms of Pb and Cd were different: the immobilization of Pb came from chemical chelation, and Cd was stabilized from alkaline precipitation. In conclusion, this work provides new insights into applying MgO-based binders in MSWI FA solidification.

Abstract:Considerable volumes of polluted soil are being discharged around the world resulting in serious pollution. As both Si and Al are important components in the framework of a lightweight aggregate (LWA), polluted soil can be used as a raw material for preparing the LWA. In this study, LWAs were prepared from polluted soil containing Cu, Cr, Ni, and Pb. Tests were conducted to assess their macroscopic, microscopic, and heavy-metal leaching properties. The mechanism underlying heavy metal dissolution and a method to accelerate this dissolution were systematically studied under the condition of monolithic leaching of the LWAs. The solidification state and leaching process of heavy metals under different conditions of the LWA were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the LWA prepared from polluted soil met the LWA standard and new crystalline phases were formed during the sintering process. At the same time, long-term leaching tests and accelerated leaching tests showed that the leaching concentrations of the four heavy metals were all lower than the safety limits specified in Chinese standards. The experiments revealed that the pH, temperature, and ultrasonication could accelerate the dissolution of heavy metals. In particular, ultrasonication caused the heavy metals to exhibit the effects of long-term leaching in a short time. Nevertheless, leaching amount did not exceed the limits specified by the standard, thus improving the our understanding of heavy metal solidification in LWAs. These results could significantly guide the construction industry in establishing an evaluation method for heavy metal dissolution that conforms to the service environment of LWAs, enabling the safe management of solid wastes and the sustainable development of light aggregates.

Abstract:A lightweight aggregate (LWA) was manufactured from municipal sewage sludge, gangue, and coal ash. The product performance and environmental safety of the sintered material were evaluated by changing the sludge blending ratio and sintering temperature. The distribution and migratory transformation characteristics of heavy metals in LWA were examined by BCR sequential extraction in combination with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The environmental safety performance of LWA was comprehensively evaluated by the OPTI index for the first time. The leaching concentration of the heavy metals Pb, Ni, Cu, and Zn in raw materials without sintering reached 1.17, 1.6, 7.84, and 7.56 mg/L, respectively, far exceeding the regulatory threshold value. At 1250 °C, sintering with 60% sludge content resulted in Cu and Zn leaching concentrations of only 0.41 mg/L and 0.37 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, a big portion of heavy metals were in the residual fraction of sintered LWA. The proportion of comprehensive pollutant toxicity index is only 199.17. Additionally, the mechanical properties of sintered LWA exceed the standards stipulated in the GB/T1743.1-2010 standard. Using sewage sludge to manufacture lightweight aggregate is not only environmentally safe but also produces LWA with good engineering characteristics.

Abstract:Lead-zinc tailings (LZTs) are industrial by-products containing a large number of heavy metals that seriously harm the ecological environment and human health. This study was performed to propose a sustainable and efficient method for immobilizing Pb, Cr, and Cd in LZTs by using solid waste. To better assess the immobilization performance and mechanism, the leaching toxicity, fraction distribution, unconfined compressive strength, environmental risk assessment, and hydration products were explored. The LZTs were mixed and molded with different constituents of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and rice husk ashes (RHAs) at different curing temperatures. Results suggest that ≥99% of the Pb, Cr, and Cd were immobilized mainly in the form of residual fractions in the LZTs. The amounts of Pb, Cr, and Cd in the bioavailable fractions notably decreased by approximately 99.83%, 99.58%, and 97.05%, respectively. After stabilization/solidification (S/S) disposal, Pb, Cr, and Cd showed low to even no risk. The RHAs were effective to stabilize Pb, and GGBFS was effective to stabilize Cr. However, both materials showed almost equal effects to Cd. Ettringite, C-S-H gel, and portlandite were the main hydration products to immobilize Pb, Cr, and Cd, and these hydration products provided a source of strength. Honey-comb or reticular network C-S-H gel possessed higher specific surface area, higher pore volume, and bigger pore size than the other materials. The proposed method could explain the sustainability and efficiency of the S/S of Pb, Cr, and Cd in LZTs by using RHAs. This study opens up new perspectives for disposing heavy metal by using accessible agricultural solid waste (i.e., RHAs) in rural areas, and the solidified block shows certain economic benefits.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (FA) is a pressing issue in urban development. In FA treatment, washing is a common dechlorination pre-treatment. During washing, considerable heavy metal would leach due to the abundant alkaline substances, posing challenges to the heavy metal stabilization. Also, with high alkalinity, FA has potential to co-dispose of waste sulfuric acid (hazardous waste). Addressing these, our study presented a novel pH-controlled sulfuric acid washing for FA dechlorination during the sintering preparation of lightweight aggregate (LWA). It was aimed at enhancing heavy metals stabilization and enabling the co-recycling of FA and waste sulfuric acid. By controlling a pH of 10.50 during sulfuric acid washing, the leaching rate of Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ba, and Cr was below 2%, which was a marked improvement over conventional water washing. Sulfuric acid washed FA (SFA) can be used to produce standard-compliant LWA by sintering with bentonite and SiC. The SFA-based LWA stabilized heavy metals more effectively than LWA using FA and water-washed FA. At a 30 wt% addition rate, the stabilized rate of Pb and Cd increased from 11.7% (using FA) to 72.4% (using SFA), and from 6.3% (using FA) to 49.0% (using SFA), respectively. During washing and sintering, XPS analysis further investigated the transformation of Pb, Cu, and Zn into stable states (Pb-glass, Cu2O/CuO, and ZnAl2O4), enhancing their stabilization. Our study introduces a novel method for co-recycling FA and waste sulfuric acid, offering enhanced environmental sustainability and deeper insights into the mechanism of heavy metal stabilization.

Abstract:In order to follow the growing trend towards waste re-utilization and clean production, geopolymers were synthesized to immobilize Pb2+ and Zn2+ by simultaneously using electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) and lead-zinc smelting slag (LZSS) as raw aluminosilicate materials. Different contents of supplementary cementitious materials (i.e., blast furnace slag, sodium aluminate and silica-gel powder) were respectively employed to study the influences of Ca, Al and Si on compressive strengths of geopolymers. Moreover, the geopolymers can be used to immobilize heavy metals including Pb and Zn. The effects of heavy metals on compressive strength and leaching concentration were explored. Results showed that, geopolymers with 1% Pb(NO3)2 loading had a highest 7-day compressive strength of 28.5 MPa and a low heavy metal leaching concentration below the limit (total Pb < 5 mg/L, total Zn < 100 mg/L). Proved by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, XPS analyses and theoretical calculation, the immobilization of Pb/Zn in EMR/LZSS based geopolymers was realized by physical encapsulation and chemical bonding. The proposed technology can be potentially used to convert Pb/Zn-containing solid wastes into less hazardous or nonhazardous solids for environmentally acceptable construction applications.

Abstract:To solve heavy metals leaching problem in the utilization of various industrial solid wastes, this work investigated the heavy metals immobilization of ternary geopolymer prepared by nickel slag (NS), lithium slag (LS), and metakaolin (MK). Compressive strength was measured to determine the optimum and appropriate mix proportions. The leaching characteristics of typical heavy metals (Cu (II), Pb (II), and Cr (III)) in acid, alkali, and salt environments were revealed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). The heavy metals immobilization mechanism was explored by Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) tests. The experimental results show that the group with a mass ratio of NS, LS and MK of 1:1:8 exhibits the highest compressive strength, which reaches 69.1 MPa at 28 d. The ternary geopolymer possesses a desirable capacity for immobilizing inherent heavy metals, where the immobilization rates of Cu and Pb reach 96.69 %, and that of Cr reaches 99.97 %. The leaching concentrations of Cr and Pb increase when the samples are exposed to acidic and alkaline environments. Cu and Pb are mainly physically encapsulated in geopolymer. Additionally, immobilization of Cr mainly involves physical encapsulation and chemical bonding.

Comparison and mechanism analysis of MgO, CaO, and Portland cement for immobilization of heavy metals in MSWI fly ash

Abstract:The significant production of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) underscores the importance of developing efficient solidification materials. This study employed MgO and CaO for immobilizing MSWI FA (with a 70% fly ash incorporation), and the immobilization effect was compared with that of Portland cement (PC). Experimental findings revealed that MgO exhibited the most effective stabilization for heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) compared to CaO and PC. XRD, FTIR, TG, and SEM analysis indicated that the principal hydration products in MSWI FA binders solidified with MgO, CaO, and PC were Mg(OH)2, CaCO3, and C-S-H gel, respectively. Mg(OH)2 efficiently immobilized heavy metals through chemical complexation and surface adsorption mechanisms. The MgO-treated MSWI FA demonstrated the highest residual fractions and the lowest easily leachable fractions. Moreover, the leaching characteristics of heavy metals were significantly influenced by the pH level, so MgO-treated MSWI FA with a leachate pH of 9.18 achieved the precipitation and stabilization of most heavy metals. In summary, this study provided an effective material selection for MSWI FA immobilization and presented a novel strategy for MSWI FA management.

Abstract:The incineration of municipal and industrial solid waste generates substantial amounts of fly ash, a residue containing hazardous heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). These heavy metals pose severe environmental and health risks because of their toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation. Moreover, leaching from fly ash leads to the contamination of soil and water, resulting in adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. Therefore, addressing the environmental challenges associated with leaching of heavy metals from incineration fly ash is critical. Different immobilization methods (physical, biological, and thermal) have shown significant potential for the immobilization of heavy metals, which leads to a reduction in their leachability and enhanced long-term environmental safety. This review article explores and highlights the treatment methods employed to immobilize heavy metals in incineration fly ash, and compares their advantages and limitations. This study presents an in-depth analysis of different immobilization techniques, their mechanisms, and the environmental implications of these methods. Additionally, this review highlights recent advancements in the field, shedding light on emerging technologies and future research directions for effective heavy metal immobilization.

Influence of Liquid Ceramic Additive on Binding of Heavy Metal During the Vitrification of Fly Ash from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator

Abstract:Vitrification process can effectively control the leachability of heavy metals in fly ash generated from municipal solid waste incinerator (MWSI). The use of liquid ceramic (LC) additive as a heavy metal chemical stabilization agent was evaluated for MSWI fly ash. The residuals of chromium, lead and zinc in slag increase by different degree with liquid ceramic additive at 1400 degrees C, while those of cadmium and copper decreases. The migrating characteristic of nickel is hardly affected by the additive less than 10%. The volatilization of Cr and Zn occurs after 61 minute with 10% addition of LC, and the binding efficiency of Cr decreases with increasing of melting temperature. The results indicate that the binding efficiency of heavy metals was affected greatly by LC additive and showed significant differences according to type of heavy metal during melting process. The short melting time (no longer than 33 min) is useful to obtain high binding efficiency of heavy metals.

Abstract:Lead–zinc smelting slag (LZSS) is regarded as a hazardous waste containing heavy metals that poses a significant threat to the environment. LZSS is rich in aluminosilicate, which has the potential to prepare alkali-activated materials and solidify hazardous waste, realizing hazardous waste cotreatment. In this study, the experiment included two parts; i.e., the preparation of alkali-activated LZSS (pure smelting slag) and chromite ore processing residue (COPR) solidification/stabilization. Single-factor and orthogonal experiments were carried out that aimed to explore the effects of various parameters (alkali solid content, water glass modulus, liquid–solid ratio, and initial curing temperature) for alkali-activated LZSS. Additionally, compressive strength and leaching toxicity were the indexes used to evaluate the performance of the solidified bodies containing COPR. As a result, the highest compressive strength of alkali-activated LZSS reached 84.49 MPa, and when 40% COPR was added, the strength decreased to 1.42 MPa. However, the leaching concentrations of Zn and Cr from all the solidified bodies were far below the critical limits (US EPA Method 1311 and China GB5085.3-2007). Heavy-metal ions in LZSS and COPR were immobilized successfully by chemical and physical means, which was detected by analyses including environmental scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:Based on the purpose of safe and resourceful disposal of hazardous waste, this paper proposes a new method for the combined treatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA), phosphorus slag (PS), and secondary aluminum dross (SAD). A novel alkali-activated binder was synthesized by orthogonal experimental design, and the strength formation mechanism of the binder and the solidification and stabilization (S/S) mechanism of heavy metals were revealed. The results show that the maximum strength of the sample at 60 d is 22.4 MPa. The addition of SAD will affect the development of the strength of the solidified body and the types of hydration products of the gel. The hydration products of the solidified body are mainly calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H), and calcium alumina (AFt). The solidified body of alkali-activated cementitious material has a good S/S effect on heavy metals, and its solidification efficiency is Zn > Cd > Pb > Cu > Ni > As > Cr. The maximum solidification rates of Zn, Pb, and Cd were 99.97 %, 97.90 %, and 99.68 %, respectively. At the same time, the leaching concentration of various heavy metals meets the threshold requirements stipulated by relevant international norms and has good environmental safety.

Abstract:Melting treatment has emerged as a promising technology for managing municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash owing to its advantageous features of effective detoxification and volume reduction. The melting treatment of MSWI fly ash involves the immobilization of heavy metals by crystals and liquid phase. Herein, the immobilization mechanism of heavy metals (Cu, Pb and Cd) by the crystals and the liquid phase was investigated using melting experiments, thermodynamic calculations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Results demonstrate that the immobilization of heavy metals is influenced by a combination of factors: the reaction of heavy metals, physical encapsulation ability of the liquid phase and chemical fixation ability of both the crystals and the liquid phase. An increase in the content of SiO2 and Al2O3 promotes the conversion of heavy metals oxides into heavy metals chlorides. Furthermore, an increase in the content and polymerization degree of the liquid phase facilitates the physical encapsulation of heavy metals chlorides. The chemical fixation ability of the crystals and the liquid phase differs for Cu and Pb, while Cd cannot be immobilized through chemical fixation. To enhance the immobilization of heavy metals during melting treatment, the chemical composition of MSWI fly ash should be adjusted within the anorthite region of the ternary phase diagram. Minimization and stabilization of smelting arsenic-containing hazardous wastewater and solid waste using strategy for stepwise phase-controlled and thermal-doped copper slags

Abstract:Minimization and stabilization of arsenic-containing smelting wastewater and residue is of crucial issue to resolve the arsenic contamination. Calcium arsenate is a typical precipitate produced from disposal of smelting acid wastewater. However, it suffers from poor stability and large quantity in the aqueous environment. Copper slags, as for rich-iron species materials, are disposed of in landfills or open-air tailing ponds, which are another waste material that have not been effectively utilized for reuse application. In this study, strategy for sequence of phase-controlled and thermal-doped copper slag technique was used as the efficient means of minimization and stabilization of arsenic-bearing resides. Detailed results were showed that stepwise phase precipitation significantly reduced the formation of hazardous solid waste; the total solid waste was reduced 47.0 wt% because the gypsum was separated from arsenic calcium residues through two-step methods. Subsequently, solid waste stabilization was achieved by using thermal-doped slag, and the high yield of magnetite (75.6 wt%) and fayalite (22.7 wt%) was produced from copper slags. It was proved that these iron-rich species displayed the remarkable performance to stabilize arsenic due to the formation of Fe-As-Ca-O complex; compared with the raw solid waste, the arsenic leachability was decreased from 280.75 to 1.05 mg/L via copper slag stabilization process. The immobilized arsenic content was 25.0 wt%. Overall, the proposed strategy for stepwise phase-controlled and thermal-doped copper slags was a potentially effective strategy for reducing emissions and pollution of arsenic-containing wastewater and residue.

Abstract:A kind of solidifying agent was made to consolidate heavy metals in mineral and municipal wastes by using of slag. According to the solid waste's toxic leaching process, the consolidation result of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr could be tested. Researching results demonstrated that the solidifying agent had great effect of consolidation to heavy metals. Then methods of IR, XRD and sequential extraction were used to analyze the mechanism of consolidation. The result showed that the physical fixation combined with chemical link was the mechanism of consolidation.
Immobilization of high concentration hexavalent chromium via core-shell structured lightweight aggregate: A promising soil remediation strategy

Abstract:Among industrially polluted soils, chromium contaminated sites, especially hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) contaminated C6+ sites, are particularly difficult to manage. The Cr6+ in such soils is usually at a high concentration. Several studies show that sintering and solidification are effective ways to treat Cr6+ in soil. In this study, a core-shell lightweight aggregate (CS-LWA) was prepared using Cr6+ contaminated soil as the core and clean bulk materials as a shell to seal the Cr6+ pollutant in the core, and the shell prevents it from leaching out. A reductant, pulverized coal, was added to assist the solidification and improve chromium immobilization . The results show that this method can effectively reduce the leaching of chromium in polluted soil with varying chromium content, and that chromium leaching can be further reduced by increasing the amount of coating material. The chromium in leachate from coated CS-LWA mixed with 8% pulverized coal was only 0.02 mg/L, much lower than 1042.8 mg/L in leachate from untreated chromium-contaminated soil. Moreover, the strength, density, and water absorption characteristics of CS-LWA met the Chinese national standards, enabling its use as a lightweight aggregate for construction.

Abstract:The leaching potential of heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn, and Cu) from the tannery sludge charred at above 350°C under oxygen-depleted conditions was evaluated for re-use as landfill cover materials. Solidification/stabilization (S/S) was employed for the immobilization of heavy metals in the tannery sludge chars (TSCs) to further reduce the leaching potential. The effects of charring temperatures, different types of binders (FeSO4, lime, cement, HAP, and ladle slag), and aging on the immobilization of heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, and Cr) in the TSCs were investigated. The immobilization efficiencies were estimated using the toxicity characterization leaching procedure (TCLP). The results show that the extractable concentrations of heavy metals decreased with the charring temperature. The single binder (FeSO4 alone) was highly effective for Cr immobilization, but not for other heavy metals such as Ni and Zn. The binary binders, FeSO4 combined with lime, cement, or ladle slag, were highly effective in the simultaneous immobilization of Cr, Ni, and Zn. Among the binary binders, the FeSO4 + lime was the best combination in the heavy metal immobilization. TCLP-extractable concentrations decreased after aging for 30 days. The metal immobilization efficiency increased with CaO and SiO2 contents in the binders (lime > cement > ladle slag) and with aging.
