Abstract:Municipal solid waste circulating fluidized bed incineration (MSWCFBI) fly ash was a hazardous waste, maintaining challenges for disposal. One effective approach was stabilizing the toxic heavy metal ions in the fly ash structures in situ. This work proposed a fusion–hydrothermal method, including fusion pretreatment in nitrogen atmosphere and microwave-assisted hydrothermal process, to treat three MSWCFBI fly ash samples. Specifically, leaching tests were performed to demonstrate the heavy metal stabilization. Through the treatment of the fusion–hydrothermal process, the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Cr ions leaching from the fly ashes were obviously less than those of the raw fly ash and the sample only treated by hydrothermal process. Meanwhile, the heavy metal ions migrating from the fly ash to the hydrothermal residual liquid were reduced. Importantly, lots of zeolites formed during the fusion–hydrothermal process, such as to bermorite and sodalite. The fusion pretreatment significantly facilitated the conversion of quartz into amorphous silicon and silicate salts. Then, the silicon dissolution was accelerated and zeolite formation was promoted. Eventually, the heavy metal ions could be trapped in zeolite frameworks, enhancing the stabilization of heavy metal. Moreover, the cation-exchange capability values of the three treated fly ash were 1.099, 1.168, and 1.188 meq g−1, two-folder larger than those of the samples only treated by hydrothermal process. In summary, the fusion–hydrothermal method could facilitate the stabilization of heavy metal ions in the fly ash and the as-obtained solid product with high content of zeolite was promising for future applications.
A Novel Approach to Heavy Metal Immobilization in Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash: Investigating the Use of Chicken Eggshell Waste and CaO Addition

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is a significant byproduct of waste-to-energy processes, and poses substantial environmental and health hazards if not treated properly. The process of Stabilization/Solidification (S/S) efficiently immobilizes hazardous elements present in the fly ash through a combination of physical and chemical mechanisms. The objective of this research is to thoroughly examine the feasibility of using chicken eggshell waste powder as a stabilizing agent for heavy metals, specifically targeting Pb, in MSWI fly ash. Experimental analysis involved varying eggshell waste to fly ash weight proportions, extending from 0.0 (control group), 7:3 up to 9.5:0.5 ratio, with designated curing durations of 2 and 72hours, and maintaining a liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio at 1.0mL/g. In the two-hour curing period, the immobilization efficiency of Pb reached 100% with the addition of only 1.5% eggshell waste. Optimal ratios for Pb stabilization in MSWI fly ash were identified: maximum 2% eggshell waste for 2-hour curing and 1.5% for 72hours due to elevated Pb and Cd levels of 7:3 ratio. Adding CaO mitigated these levels, enhancing stabilization and compliance with landfill criteria. The results demonstrated that the addition of CaO led to efficient immobilization of Pb, achieving approximately 99%. In addition, the observed enhancement in compressive strength resulting from the incorporation of CaO highlights its effectiveness in enhancing the stabilizing process of MSWI fly ash. By demonstrating the effectiveness of eggshell waste and CaO in stabilizing hazardous elements, this study advocates for scalable solutions and further research on long-term stability and environmental impacts.
Sustainable and efficient stabilization/solidification of Pb, Cr, and Cd in lead-zinc tailings by using highly reactive pozzolanic solid waste

Abstract:Lead-zinc tailings (LZTs) are industrial by-products containing a large number of heavy metals that seriously harm the ecological environment and human health. This study was performed to propose a sustainable and efficient method for immobilizing Pb, Cr, and Cd in LZTs by using solid waste. To better assess the immobilization performance and mechanism, the leaching toxicity, fraction distribution, unconfined compressive strength, environmental risk assessment, and hydration products were explored. The LZTs were mixed and molded with different constituents of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and rice husk ashes (RHAs) at different curing temperatures. Results suggest that ≥99% of the Pb, Cr, and Cd were immobilized mainly in the form of residual fractions in the LZTs. The amounts of Pb, Cr, and Cd in the bioavailable fractions notably decreased by approximately 99.83%, 99.58%, and 97.05%, respectively. After stabilization/solidification (S/S) disposal, Pb, Cr, and Cd showed low to even no risk. The RHAs were effective to stabilize Pb, and GGBFS was effective to stabilize Cr. However, both materials showed almost equal effects to Cd. Ettringite, C-S-H gel, and portlandite were the main hydration products to immobilize Pb, Cr, and Cd, and these hydration products provided a source of strength. Honey-comb or reticular network C-S-H gel possessed higher specific surface area, higher pore volume, and bigger pore size than the other materials. The proposed method could explain the sustainability and efficiency of the S/S of Pb, Cr, and Cd in LZTs by using RHAs. This study opens up new perspectives for disposing heavy metal by using accessible agricultural solid waste (i.e., RHAs) in rural areas, and the solidified block shows certain economic benefits.

Abstract:Lead–zinc smelting slag (LZSS) is regarded as a hazardous waste containing heavy metals that poses a significant threat to the environment. LZSS is rich in aluminosilicate, which has the potential to prepare alkali-activated materials and solidify hazardous waste, realizing hazardous waste cotreatment. In this study, the experiment included two parts; i.e., the preparation of alkali-activated LZSS (pure smelting slag) and chromite ore processing residue (COPR) solidification/stabilization. Single-factor and orthogonal experiments were carried out that aimed to explore the effects of various parameters (alkali solid content, water glass modulus, liquid–solid ratio, and initial curing temperature) for alkali-activated LZSS. Additionally, compressive strength and leaching toxicity were the indexes used to evaluate the performance of the solidified bodies containing COPR. As a result, the highest compressive strength of alkali-activated LZSS reached 84.49 MPa, and when 40% COPR was added, the strength decreased to 1.42 MPa. However, the leaching concentrations of Zn and Cr from all the solidified bodies were far below the critical limits (US EPA Method 1311 and China GB5085.3-2007). Heavy-metal ions in LZSS and COPR were immobilized successfully by chemical and physical means, which was detected by analyses including environmental scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:As a by-product of coal-fired power plants, fly ash has attracted widespread attention because of its heavy metal adsorption potential. In this study, two fly ashes from different power plants were re-used through modification to adsorb Pb(Ⅱ) from aqueous solution and field soil. The physicochemical properties of adsorbents were characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), as well as the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In addition, batch sorption experiments and field study were conducted to investigate their adsorption capacity on Pb(Ⅱ). The results demonstrated that, the surface area of modified fly ash-2 (MFA-2) has increased 25 times. The kinetic study illustrated that the adsorption process on both modified fly ash-1 (MFA-1) and MFA-2 were more suitable for pseudo-second-order model. Nevertheless, MFA-2 took less time to reach adsorption equilibrium. Compared with the raw fly ashes, the prepared MFAs had stronger affinities to Pb(II). When used as adsorbents, more than 146 and 165 mg of Pb(II) could be adsorptively stabilized by per gram of MFA-1 and MFA-2 at 318 K from waste water, respectively; when employed as amendments, the addition of MFA-1 and MFA-2 into soil could reduce Pb accumulation in rice, with the total Pb content in rice grains is lower than the level of natural standard. The investigation declared that the MFAs were promising materials which had great potentials on adsorptive stabilization of Pb(II) from waste water and contaminated soil, which also realizes the recycling of resources and cleaner production.

Abstract:Soil washing is considered a highly efficient technology due to its higher removal rate of multiple heavy metals from contaminated soil. However, previous studies on Cd, Pb and As washing agents for soils with complex contaminations did not consider the differences in As and Cd/Pb properties, resulting in the lack of effective washing compounds and washing conditions for soils with complex contaminations. Moreover, most traditional washing agents can cause secondary pollution. In this study, HEDTA and lactic acid (LA) treatments resulted in a higher Cd and Pb removal, while 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) was more effective in As removal. Most importantly, a new washing strategy was proposed with a new combined high-efficiency washing agents consisting of HEDP + LA + FeCl3 with a ratio of 6:3:1. Considering washing efficiency and consumption under optimal washing conditions, i.e. the soil/liquid (S/L) ratio of 1:20 and washing time of 48 h, the rates of Cd, Pb and As removal were 79.93%, 69.84% and 61.55%, respectively. In addition, washing process could influence the speciation of heavy metals, especially oxidizable and residual Cd and Pb fractions, as well as reducible As fraction. The washing process using the new washing agent can significantly reduce the pollution level and health risk of Cd, Pb and As contamination. The results of this study can provide an efficient washing agent for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils at smelting sites, which will help protect human health.
Ph-Controlled Sulfuric Acid Washing Enhancing Heavy Metal Stabilization in Lightweight Aggregate Production from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (FA) is a pressing issue in urban development. In FA treatment, washing is a common dechlorination pre-treatment. During washing, considerable heavy metal would leach due to the abundant alkaline substances, posing challenges to the heavy metal stabilization. Also, with high alkalinity, FA has potential to co-dispose of waste sulfuric acid (hazardous waste). Addressing these, our study presented a novel pH-controlled sulfuric acid washing for FA dechlorination during the sintering preparation of lightweight aggregate (LWA). It was aimed at enhancing heavy metals stabilization and enabling the co-recycling of FA and waste sulfuric acid. By controlling a pH of 10.50 during sulfuric acid washing, the leaching rate of Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ba, and Cr was below 2%, which was a marked improvement over conventional water washing. Sulfuric acid washed FA (SFA) can be used to produce standard-compliant LWA by sintering with bentonite and SiC. The SFA-based LWA stabilized heavy metals more effectively than LWA using FA and water-washed FA. At a 30 wt% addition rate, the stabilized rate of Pb and Cd increased from 11.7% (using FA) to 72.4% (using SFA), and from 6.3% (using FA) to 49.0% (using SFA), respectively. During washing and sintering, XPS analysis further investigated the transformation of Pb, Cu, and Zn into stable states (Pb-glass, Cu2O/CuO, and ZnAl2O4), enhancing their stabilization. Our study introduces a novel method for co-recycling FA and waste sulfuric acid, offering enhanced environmental sustainability and deeper insights into the mechanism of heavy metal stabilization.

Abstract:This study utilized discarded steel slag (SS) as raw material and prepared modified steel slag materials (SS-SBC, SS-NBC, SS-BHA) through modification with biomass materials such as straw biochar (SBC), nutshell biochar (NBC), and biochemical humic acid (BHA). These materials were then applied for the removal of Pb from both solution and soil. The physical and chemical properties of the materials were analyzed using characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, XRD, and BET. The specific surface area of the modified materials increased from the original 3.8584 m 2 /g to 34.7133 m 2 /g, 181.7329 m 2 /g, and 7.7384 m 2 /g, respectively. The study then explored the influence of different adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity of Pb in solution, determining the optimal conditions as follows: initial concentration of 200 mg/L, adsorbent mass of 0.04 g, temperature of 15 °C, and pH = 2. To further investigate the adsorption process, kinetic and isotherm models were established. The results indicated that the adsorption process for all three materials followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting a multi-layer chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was an exothermic spontaneous reaction. Soil cultivation experiments were conducted to explore the effects of different material addition amounts and cultivation times on the passivation of Pb-polluted soil. Analysis of heavy metal forms in the soil revealed that the addition of modified materials reduced the acid-extractable form of Pb in the soil and increased the residual form, which is beneficial for reducing the migration of Pb in the soil. FT-IR and XPS analyses were employed to study the functional groups, element composition, and valence states before and after adsorption passivation of Pb by the three materials. The results confirmed that the adsorption mechanisms of SS-SBC, SS-NBC, and SS-BHA mainly involved electrostatic adsorption, ion and ligand exchange, and surface precipitation. This study not only provides a new material for adsorbing and immobilizing heavy metals in soil and water but also offers a new approach for the resource utilization of steel slag waste.

Abstract:Minimization and stabilization of arsenic-containing smelting wastewater and residue is of crucial issue to resolve the arsenic contamination. Calcium arsenate is a typical precipitate produced from disposal of smelting acid wastewater. However, it suffers from poor stability and large quantity in the aqueous environment. Copper slags, as for rich-iron species materials, are disposed of in landfills or open-air tailing ponds, which are another waste material that have not been effectively utilized for reuse application. In this study, strategy for sequence of phase-controlled and thermal-doped copper slag technique was used as the efficient means of minimization and stabilization of arsenic-bearing resides. Detailed results were showed that stepwise phase precipitation significantly reduced the formation of hazardous solid waste; the total solid waste was reduced 47.0 wt% because the gypsum was separated from arsenic calcium residues through two-step methods. Subsequently, solid waste stabilization was achieved by using thermal-doped slag, and the high yield of magnetite (75.6 wt%) and fayalite (22.7 wt%) was produced from copper slags. It was proved that these iron-rich species displayed the remarkable performance to stabilize arsenic due to the formation of Fe-As-Ca-O complex; compared with the raw solid waste, the arsenic leachability was decreased from 280.75 to 1.05 mg/L via copper slag stabilization process. The immobilized arsenic content was 25.0 wt%. Overall, the proposed strategy for stepwise phase-controlled and thermal-doped copper slags was a potentially effective strategy for reducing emissions and pollution of arsenic-containing wastewater and residue.

Abstract:In this study, sulfuric acid modified steel slag (SS-HS) was prepared using a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method, utilizing converter steel slag as the raw material, to remove heavy metal Pb 2+ from water. Single-factor experiments were conducted to determine the influence of different factors on the adsorption capacity. The obtained material was characterized using EDS and FT-IR to analyze its composition. Response surface methodology was employed to optimize the preparation conditions of SS-HS, and the optimal conditions were determined as follows: sulfuric acid dosage of 8.07 mL, reaction time of 9.98 h, and reaction temperature of 99.44 °C. SS-HS was prepared under the optimized conditions obtained from the response surface methodology. The physicochemical properties of the prepared SS-HS were analyzed using SEM, EDS, and BET. It was observed that the specific surface area of SS-HS increased from 8.0041 m 2 /g to 131.8312 m 2 /g. The average pore volume was 0.2101 cm 3 /g and the average pore size was 6.3737 nm for mesoporous material. Additionally, the influence of different adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity of Pb 2+ was investigated. The optimum adsorption conditions reached the maximum adsorption amount of 193.05 mg/g at Pb 2+ solution concentration of 700 mg/L, adsorbent mass of 0.03 g, temperature of 55 °C, pH= 5. To further understand the adsorption process, kinetic and isotherm models were established. The results indicated that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting a monolayer chemical adsorption. XPS analysis was employed to determine the composition and valence state of the materials, confirming that the adsorption mechanism of SS-HS primarily involved electrostatic adsorption, ion and ligand exchange, and surface precipitation. This study not only introduces a novel approach for the resource utilization of steel slag but also presents an innovative adsorbent for efficient removal of Pb 2+ from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The growing global demand for non-ferrous metals has led to serious environmental issues involving uncovered mine site slag dumps that threaten the surrounding soils, surface waters, groundwater, and the atmosphere. Remediation of these slags using substitute cement materials for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and precursors for alkali-activated materials (AAMs) can convert hazardous solid wastes into valuable construction materials, as well as to attain the desired solidification and stabilization (S/S) of heavy metal(loid)s (HM). This review discusses the current research on the effect of non-ferrous slags on the reaction mechanisms of the OPC and AAM. The S/S of HM from the non-ferrous slags in AAM and OPC is also reviewed. HM can be stabilized in these materials based on the complex salt effect and isomorphic effects. The major challenges faced in AAMs and OPC for HM stabilization include the long-term durability of the matrix (e.g., sulfate attack, stability of volume). The existing knowledge gaps and future trends for the sustainable application of non-ferrous slags are also discussed.
Mechanochemical Stabilization of Heavy Metals in Fly Ash with Additives.

Abstract:Mechanochemistry, as a non-thermal method showing remarkable degradation for persistent organic pollutants, is extended to stabilize the heavy metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash in the present study. The leaching suppression of heavy metals (i.e., Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd, and Ni) facilitated by five additives during mechanochemical (MC) treatment is systematically investigated, identifying that almost all heavy metals are effectively suppressed with the assistance of either CaO or Ca3(PO4)2. The pH-dependent leaching test further reveals the superiority of Ca3(PO4)2 over CaO for heavy metals stabilization. Moreover, the evolution of heavy metal speciations analysed via an optimized sequential extraction procedure shows that MC treatment with Ca3(PO4)2 significantly reduces the water- and acid-soluble fraction with high mobility from 56.8, 1.39, 12.3, 8.46, 1.13, and 29.5% to 4.96, 0.17, 0.14, 7.36, 0.12, and 0.22%, respectively for Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The risk assessment indicates remarkable detoxification of fly ash in terms of heavy metals after MC treatment: the Nemerow pollution index is dramatically decreased from 9.35 (far above 3.0- the threshold of seriously polluted domain) to 0.71 (slightly over 0.7- the threshold of safety domain). Finally, a hypothetical mechanism according with results in this study for MC stabilization of heavy metals in fly ash is proposed as: the conversion of heavy metal compounds from mobile to immobile form through reaction with additives after activated by mechanical energy.
Stabilization of Pb/Zn mine tailings by modified fly ash: characterization, performance, and mechanism

Abstract:The presence of heavy metals in mine tailings poses a serious threat to the surrounding environment. In this study, we aimed to stabilize Pb/Zn-containing mine tailings using modified fly ash (FA) with various alkali solutions. Notably, the modification of FA with Na 2 SiO 3 (NaSi-FA) resulted in the most significant structure changes. To understand the adsorption mechanism of Pb and Zn by modified FA, batch adsorption experiments were conducted. Doubling the adsorption capacity for both Pb and Zn was observed in the modified FA samples compared to unmodified samples. These results could be attributed to the enhanced surface area and porous structure, providing more anchor sites for the heavy metal ions. Additionally, the adsorption of Pb and Zn was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic. Molecular dynamics simulations further supported the notion that Pb and Zn ions could effectively exchange with Na ions within the N-A-S–H gel network, ultimately solidifying them in its structure. Stabilizing Pb/Zn tailings with NaSi-FA resulted in a significant decrease in the leaching of Pb and Zn. Specifically, the leading amount decreased by 55.2% for Pb and 35.3% for Zn, showcasing the superior performance of this stabilization method. This reduction in leaching indicates effective compliance with environmental regulations regarding the containment of Pb and Zn.

Reuse of waste sulfur from biogas desulfurization for potentially toxic metals stabilization in MSWI fly ash towards zero-waste in venous industry park

Abstract:Waste recycling in venous industrial park is considered to be an effective way for circular economy. However, the reuse of waste sulfur from biogas desulfurization in the park is difficult, and this problem has attracted little attention, leading to waste of resources and pollution. In this study, a stabilizer based on waste sulfur from biogas desulfurization (SBD) was prepared for stabilization of potentially toxic metals in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash (FA) using a simple hot alkali synthesis method. Results showed that the stabilization effect of SBD on the four commercial agents (Na2S, Amm-DTC, PBD-A and PBD-B) were significantly improved. Using 3% SBD+ 3% PBD-A, the excess Pb, Cd and Ni in the original fly ash could reach the landfill standard, and the stabilization efficiency reached 100%, 100%, and 93%, respectively, with treatment cost of 34–50 USD/t (246–366 RMB/t); compared with the single commercial agent (5% PBD-A), the stabilization efficiency of Pb was improved by 13% and the treatment cost was saved by 39%. These results provide an economical and environmentally friendly way to realize the co-disposal of MSWI FA and waste sulfur from biogas desulfurization in the park.

Abstract:Acid mine drainage (AMD) contamination poses a severe environmental threat and is a significant risk to human health. There is an urgent need to develop environmentally sustainable and technically viable solutions for water contamination caused by heavy metals. In this study, steel slag (SS) was used as a secondary resource to concurrently remove Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) from AMD. Because of the loose and porous structure, abundant functional groups, fast sedimentation velocity, and excellent solid-liquid separation, SS showed exceptional removal performance for heavy metal ions. The adsorption kinetic data of Fe(II),Cu(II), and Zn(II) showed good regression with the pseudo-second-order model. Besides, the adsorption of Fe(II) by SS conformed to the Freundlich model, whereas the adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) followed the Langmuir model, with the maximum adsorption amounts of Cu(II) and Zn(II) being 170.69 mg/g and 155.98 mg/g. Furthermore, competitive adsorption was observed among Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in a multi-component system, with the adsorption priority being Fe(II)>Cu(II)>Zn(II). The removal mechanism of Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) in AMD by SS mainly includes electrostatic attraction, chemical precipitation, and surface complexation. Interestingly, the leached concentrations of Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) from the spent slag after calcination were all within the detection limit of the Chinese emission standard, demonstrating excellent environmental stability. Theoretically, this renders it a viable candidate for use as an additive in construction materials. Meaningfully, the work offers a practical approach for energy-efficient and eco-friendly heavy metal ions adsorption, and the secondary utilization of SS also contributes to the sustainable development of the steel industry. It is beneficial to implement the development concepts of clean production and efficient utilization of industrial solid waste.
The Solidification of Lead-Zinc Smelting Slag through Bentonite Supported Alkali-Activated Slag Cementitious Material

Abstract:The proper disposal of Lead-Zinc Smelting Slag (LZSS) having toxic metals is a great challenge for a sustainable environment. In the present study, this challenge was overcome by its solidification/stabilization through alkali-activated cementitious material i.e., Blast Furnace Slag (BFS). The different parameters (water glass modulus, liquid-solid ratio and curing temperature) regarding strength development were optimized through single factor and orthogonal experiments. The LZSS was solidified in samples that had the highest compressive strength (after factor optimization) synthesized with (AASB) and without (AAS) bentonite as an adsorbent material. The results indicated that the highest compressive strength (AAS = 92.89MPa and AASB = 94.57MPa) was observed in samples which were prepared by using a water glass modulus of 1.4, liquid-solid ratio of 0.26 and a curing temperature of 25 °C. The leaching concentrations of Pb and Zn in both methods (sulfuric and nitric acid, and TCLP) had not exceeded the toxicity limits up to 70% addition of LZSS due to a higher compressive strength (>60 MPa) of AAS and AASB samples. While, leaching concentrations in AASB samples were lower than AAS. Conclusively, it was found that the solidification effect depends upon the composition of binder material, type of leaching extractant, nature and concentration of heavy metals in waste. The XRD, FTIR and SEM analyses confirmed that the solidification mechanism was carried out by both physical encapsulation and chemical fixation (dissolved into a crystal structure). Additionally, bentonite as an auxiliary additive significantly improved the solidification/stabilization of LZSS in AASB by enhancing the chemical adsorption capacity of heavy metals.

Abstract:Chemical stabilization is frequently used to stabilize lead (Pb) or arsenate (As), but faces challenges in Pb-As co-contaminated soils because of the antagonistic reactions between chemical stabilizers and contaminants. In this work, we innovated an effective and cost-efficient stepwise steam flash heating (SSFH) strategy to simultaneously immobilize Pb and As, and unraveled the underlying mechanisms. The combination of 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 and 2% Fe2(SO4)3 only decreased 1.99% Pb by toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP-Pb) but increased 17.8% of TCLP-As due to the antagonistic effects. SSFH with Ca(H2PO4)2 in the first step and Fe2(SO4)3 in the second step achieved the minimal TCLP-Pb and TCLP-As of 0.778 and 0.327 mg/L, respectively. It also reduced 69.8% of leachable As in 100-year acid rain simulation, indicating a favorable long-term stabilization performance. Additionally, SSFH approach reduced 43.2% stabilizer dosage and 14.9% cost. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) documented that the stepwise SFH promoted the transformation of Pb(NO3)2 and NaAsO2/NaAsO3/As2O3/As2O5 into stable Pb3(PO4)2 and FeAsO4, preventing the formation of AsO43- and FePO4. Our findings proved the state-of-the-art SSFH approach and unraveled its mechanisms to stabilize Pb and As co-contamination in soils, offering a green and sustainable remediation alternative for the management of heavy metal contaminated sites. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: A novel stepwise SFH approach can be applied to overcome the stabilizer antagonist effects by separately immobilizing Pb and As in two sequential steps. It also decreased 43.2% of stabilizer dosage and 14.9% of cost comparing to conventional chemical stabilization. This approach can be used for other metal co-contaminated soils facing similar antagonistic challenges, and our work raises a state-of-the-art solution for cost-effective, green and sustainable remediation practices.

Abstract:The improper disposal of large amounts of solid waste (SW) has led to serious ecological and environmental problems, especially heavy metal (HM) pollution. Converter steelmaking has the potential to co-process SW, but the distribution of heavy metals (HMs) during converter steelmaking is unclear. In this study, the effects of smelting temperature and slag alkalinity on the distribution of typical HMs in the SW of steel samples, steel slag, and the gas phase were investigated in a specially-made induction furnace. The results showed that upon increasing the smelting temperature, As (As2S3) was mainly distributed in the steel sample, and the HM-containing compounds Cr2O3, CrCl3, ZnCl2, ZnS, ZnO, PbCl2, PbS, and PbO were mainly distributed in the gas phase. Upon increasing the alkalinity within a certain range, the distribution of HMs in steel samples and steel slag increased gradually, while their distribution in the gas phase decreased. Thermodynamic calculations, Eh-pH diagrams, XRD patterns, and XPS spectra indicated that impurity elements in the hot metal and the CaO content affected the chemical reactions by which HM-containing compounds in the steel sample formed elemental HMs and those in steel slag existed as oxides; therefore, it is necessary to choose a suitable temperature and alkalinity for slag when disposing of different types of SW.
