Abstract:Soil heavy metal contamination caused by mining is a significant issue in China. The site of this study is located in Ganzhou of Jiangxi province in China. 102 soil samples were collected along the Yangmeijiang River. ICP-MS was used to obtain heavy metal concentrations in the soils. Significant contamination was found in the agriculture soils adjacent to the river and near mining industries. The heavy metal concentrations were high at depths of 20 cm and 40 cm. According to geo-accumulation index Igeo, the soils were extremely polluted with Cd (Igeo = 4–7), heavily polluted with As (Igeo = 2–4), moderately to heavily polluted with Pb, Zn and Cu (Igeo = 0–4) and virtually unpolluted with Ni, Cr and Hg (Igeo = -3–1). These results may be a result of large amounts of As, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn being produced by nearby copper heap leach facilities. Based on USEPA method for health risk assessment, with ingestion being the major pathway for health risks, heavy metals pose a non-carcinogenic risk to adults (HQmax = 2.87, CRmax = 4.25 × 10-4), but pose both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk to children (HQmax = 20, CRmax = 1.15×10-3). Overall, As, Pb and Cr pose the primary health risks for the soils in the study area.
Assessment of heavy metal(oid) pollution and related health risks in agricultural soils surrounding a coal gangue dump from an abandoned coal mine in Chongqing, Southwest China

Abstract:The coal gangue dump may introduce heavy metal(oid)s (HMs) into surrounding agricultural soils, posing potential health risks to nearby communities. This study evaluated heavy metal(oid) pollution in agricultural soils adjacent to a gangue dump at an abandoned coal mine in Chongqing, Southwest China. The concentrations of HMs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were quantified using ICP-MS, and the contamination status was assessed using the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Contamination Factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), and Potential Ecological Risk Index (RI). Heavy metal(oid) contamination was detected in soils across a depth of 0-30 cm, particularly pronounced in the topsoil layer (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm depths). Cu emerged as the predominant contaminant across all examined depths, with average Igeo values of 1.20, 1.21, and 1.16 for the 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-30 cm depths, respectively, indicating moderate contamination. The CF for Cu was 3.55, 3.55, and 3.50 for these respective depths, classifying it as considerable contamination. The PLI values ranged from 1.61 to 2.50, with a mean value of 2.12, indicating overall contamination. The ecological risk assessment indicated that the soil's ecological risk was low at all depths. Cd was the major contributor to the RI, accounting for 48%, 47%, and 42% at 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-30 cm depths, respectively. Health risk assessments revealed significant non-carcinogenic risks to children (mean HI = 1.30) and unacceptable carcinogenic risks to both adults and children (mean TCR = 3.26 × 10-4 and 1.53 × 10-3, respectively). This study underscores the critical need for comprehensive risk assessments using multiple indicators to prioritize remediation efforts for HMs, providing a scientific basis for effective environmental management and public health protection in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area.

Abstract:Mining activities typically discharge considerable amounts of heavy metals into the environment, raising concerns about soil metal pollution, environmental security, and human well-being. Therefore, a systematic regional-scale investigation of soil heavy metal pollution in mining areas is necessary for soil management. In this study, 5817 soil samples from the Huainan coal mining area collected for studies conducted from 2000 to 2021 were compiled to quantify the pollution level and spatiotemporal variation of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Hg, Ni, and Mn). The associated ecological health risk of heavy metals in soil was assessed using the Hakanson ecological hazard index, Monte Carlo simulation in conjunction with the total hazard quotient, and the hazard index. Cd was the top contaminant, followed by Hg. In terms of spatial distribution, heavy metal contamination was more severe in the eastern area of Fengtai and Datong districts, because these districts of Anhui Province are significant industrial regions. In addition, the results of the Monte Carlo evaluation of human health risks showed that the total noncarcinogenic risk of heavy metals in soil is below the acceptable level, while the carcinogenic risk was 5.97% for adults and 15.53% for children. As accounted for 57.4% of noncarcinogenic risk, Cr contributed 36.1% of carcinogenic risk. Compared with adults, children are more vulnerable to the carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks posed by heavy metals, with oral consumption being the primary exposure route. This research can provide useful details for protecting the environment and managing soil in a coal mining area.

Abstract:To analyze the health risk assessment and environmental benchmark of cadmium in farmland soils surrounding the gangue heap of a coal mine in Chongqing, Hakanson, the ecological risk index and health risk assessment were used. Meanwhile, the soil environmental reference value of the regional cultivated land was inverted based on the species sensitive distribution model (SSD). The results showed that the dryland soil was polluted by Cd, with an over-standard rate of 55.8%, and the paddy field soil was polluted by Cd, with an over-standard rate of 31.6%. The corn was polluted by Cd, with an over-standard rate of 4.4%, and the rice was not polluted by Cd. The Hakanson ecological risk index showed that Cd was mainly characterized in soils by high ecological risk and considerable ecological risk. The health risk assessment indicated that Cd presented low non-carcinogenic risk by corn and rice; however, it showed acceptable carcinogenic risk by corn and unacceptable carcinogenic risk by rice in this study. The sensitivity analysis of health risks showed that the content of Cd was the most sensitive. The SSD inversion showed that the reference values for Cd in dryland soil of pH ≤ 5.5, 5.5<pH ≤ 6.5, 6.5<pH ≤ 7.5, and pH>7.5 had HC5 values of 0.491, 0.382, 0.376, and 0.588 mg·kg-1, respectively, and that for Cd in paddy soil had an HC5 value of 0.807 mg·kg-1. The reverse analysis showed that the HC5 of Cd in dryland soil (pH ≤ 7.5) and paddy soil was relatively relaxed and was higher than the soil risk screening values, which showed that the current standard was relatively loose. However, the HC5 of Cd in dryland soil (pH>7.5) was lower than the soil risk screening values, which showed that the current standard was relatively strict. It is suggested that the current soil standard could be adjusted in this area.

Abstract:Mining and smelting have been releasing huge amount of toxic substances into the environment. In the present study, agricultural soil and different agricultural products (potato, Chinese cabbage, garlic bolt, corn) were analyzed to examine the source, spatial distribution, and risk of 12 elements (As, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn) in agricultural soil near mine fields, smelting fields, and mountain field around Hezhang County, west of Guizhou Province, China. Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that in mining area, As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, and Zn were generated from anthropogenic sources; in smelting area, As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn were derived from anthropogenic sources through zinc smelting ceased in 2004. The enrichment factors (EFs) and ecological risk index (RI) of soil in mining area are the most harmful, showing extremely high enrichment and very high ecological risk of As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, and Zn. Zinc is the most significant enriched in the smelting area; however, mountain area has a moderate enrichment and ecological risk and do not present any ecological risk. According to spatial distribution, the concentrations depend on the nearby mining and smelting activities. Transfer factors (TFs) in the smelting area and mountain are high, implying a threat for human consumption. Therefore, further studies should be carried out taking into account the harm of those heavy metals and potential negative health effects from the consumption of agricultural products in these circumstances.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the pollution characteristics, source apportionment, and health risks associated with trace metal(loid)s (TMs) in the major agricultural producing areas in Chongqing, China. We analyzed the source apportionment and assessed the health risk of TMs in agricultural soils by using positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and health risk assessment (HRA) model based on Monte Carlo simulation. Meanwhile, we combined PMF and HRA models to explore the health risks of TMs in agricultural soils by different pollution sources to determine the priority control factors. Results showed that the average contents of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in the soil were found to be 0.26, 5.93, 27.14, 61.32, 23.81, 32.45, and 78.65 mg/kg, respectively. Spatial analysis and source apportionment analysis revealed that urban and industrial sources, agricultural sources, and natural sources accounted for 33.0%, 27.7%, and 39.3% of TM accumulation in the soil, respectively. In the HRA model based on Monte Carlo simulation, non-carcinogenic risks were deemed negligible (hazard index <1), the carcinogenic risks were at acceptable level (10−6 <total carcinogenic risk ≤ 10−4), with higher risks observed for children compared to adults. The relationship between TMs, their sources, and health risks indicated that urban and industrial sources were primarily associated with As, contributing to 75.1% of carcinogenic risks and 55.7% of non-carcinogenic risks, making them the primary control factors. Meanwhile, agricultural sources were primarily linked to Cd and Pb, contributing to 13.1% of carcinogenic risks and 21.8% of non-carcinogenic risks, designating them as secondary control factors.

Abstract:The present study conducted the concentration evaluation, pollution assessment, source analysis, and risk assessment of heavy metals in the soil of the CPUA, China, to contribute to the smooth construction of urban agglomeration. Elevated levels of mean concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) in the soils were shown compared to background values. Cu and zinc (Zn) and also lead (Pb) and Cd exhibited spatial similarity. Manganese (Mn) and Cr exhibited point source characteristics such as the concentrations at a point much higher than the surrounding area. The potential ecological risk in the northern region belonged to the moderate risk level category. Cd contributed over 90% to the potential ecological risk. The health risk among children was higher than that among adults. The major exposure pathways were different for adults and children. Exposure, as shown using Hazard Index (HI), to adults was mainly through the skin contact route, while to children was through both the skin contact and ingestion route. The primary CR (carcinogenic risk) to adults was through the inhalation route, while that to children was through the ingestion route. In both children and adults, Cr was the main contributor to HI and CR. According to the Monte Carlo simulation results, the cumulative probability of exceeding the critical value of HI for children was approximately 2.8–3.0 times that for adults. According to the sensitivity analysis results, non-carcinogenic risk prevention should begin mainly by reducing exposure duration and skin contact. The cancer risk may be reduced primarily by decreasing the exposure duration and controlling ingestion. The PMF (Positive Matrix Factorization) source analysis revealed that Pb mainly came from transportation sources. In addition, Cu, Pb, and Mn were derived mainly from agricultural sources. Cr was derived mostly from a natural source, and Cd originated mainly from an industrial source.

Abstract:In recent years, heavy metal pollution accidents have occurred in many regions of China, and the public has become increasingly concerned about its health. Based on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency model and using Monte Carlo simulation techniques, this article presents a procedure for health risk assessment of heavy metal pollution. A case study was conducted in the Qixia lead and zinc mining area. Based on the magnitude of heavy metal contamination in the mine factory, vicinal Qixia scenic site and village, the potential health risk calculated for a lifetime of exposure (through ingestion and dermal contact) was determined as the cumulative carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk for workers, tourists, and local residents (including children and adults), respectively. The risk assessment indicated that the carcinogenic risk is not significant. However, Pb poses a significant cumulative non-carcinogenic risk, which tends to be serious for workers. Additionally, local children are more vulnerable than adults to the risks associated with heavy metal contamination. Accordingly, risk alleviation and preventive measures should be taken, especially for children and workers.
Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils Based on Multi-Receptor Modeling Combined with Monte Carlo Simulation

Abstract:The spatial characteristics, pollution sources, and risks of soil heavy metals were analyzed on Hainan Island. The results showed that the heavily polluted points accounted for 0.56%, and the number of mildly and above polluted points accounted for 15.27%, respectively, which were mainly distributed in the northern part of the study area. The principal component analysis–absolute principal component score–multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) revealed four sources of heavy metals: agricultural pollution sources for cadmium, (Cd), industrial and mining pollution sources for arsenic, (As), transportation pollution sources for zinc and lead (Zn and Pb), and natural pollution sources for chromium, nickel, and copper (Cr, Ni, and Cu). The human health risk assessment indicated that the average non-carcinogenic risk (HI) for both adults and children was within the safe threshold (<1), whereas Cr and Ni posed a carcinogenic risk (CR) to human health. In addition, the total non-carcinogenic risk (THI) indicated that heavy metals posed a potential non-carcinogenic risk to children, while the total carcinogenic risk (TCR) remained relatively high, mainly in the northern part of the study area. The results of the Monte Carlo simulation showed that the non-carcinogenic risk (HI) for all heavy metals was 1, indicating a potential health risk above the safe threshold. Meanwhile, nearly 100% and 99.94% of the TCR values exceeded 1 × 10−4 for children and adults, indicating that Cr and Ni are priority heavy metals for control. The research results provide the necessary scientific basis for the prevention and control of heavy metals in agricultural soils.

Spatial distribution characteristics and risk assessment of soil heavy metal pollution around typical coal gangue hill located in Fengfeng Mining area

Abstract:The pollution of heavy metals in soil caused by exposed coal gangue and its prevention and control has become a hot issue restricting the green mining of coal in China. Nemerow integrated pollution index ( NIPI ), potential ecological risk index ( RI ) and human health risk assessment model were used to evaluate the pollution and risk of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, As, Pb) in the soil around the typical coal gangue hill in Fengfeng mining area of China. The results show that: firstly, the accumulation of coal gangue leads to the enrichment of four heavy metals in the surrounding shallow soil, and NIPI and RI were 1.0–4.4 and 21.63–91.28, respectively. The comprehensive pollution level of heavy metals in soil reached the warning line and above, and the potential ecological risk level reached slightly and above. When the horizontal distance exceeded 300 m, 300 m and 200 m, respectively, the influence of coal gangue hill on the heavy metal content in shallow soil, the comprehensive pollution level of heavy metals and the potential ecological risk level basically disappeared. In addition, based on the potential ecological risk assessment results and main risk factors, the ecological risk configuration of the study area was divided into five categories: "strong ecological risk + As," "intermediate ecological risk + As + Cu," "intermediate ecological risk + As + Cu or Pb," "minor ecological risk + As + Cu" and "minor ecological risk + As + Cu or Pb." The hazard index ( HI ) and total carcinogenic risk ( TCR ) of shallow soil polluted by heavy metals in the study area were 0.24–1.07 and 0.41 × 10 −4 –1.78 × 10 −4 , respectively, which posed non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to children, but the risks were controllable. This study will help to take strategic measures to accurately control and repair the heavy metal pollution in the soil around the coal gangue hill and provide a scientific basis for solving the safe use of agricultural land and realizing the construction of ecological civilization.

Abstract:Abstract. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the potential ecological risk and trend of soil heavy-metal pollution around a coal gangue dump in Jilin Province (Northeast China). The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr and Zn were monitored by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The potential ecological risk index method developed by Hakanson (1980) was employed to assess the potential risk of heavy-metal pollution. The potential ecological risk in the order of ER(Cd) > ER(Pb) > ER(Cu) > ER(Cr) > ER(Zn) have been obtained, which showed that Cd was the most important factor leading to risk. Based on the Cd pollution history, the cumulative acceleration and cumulative rate of Cd were estimated, then the fixed number of years exceeding the standard prediction model was established, which was used to predict the pollution trend of Cd under the accelerated accumulation mode and the uniform mode. Pearson correlation analysis and correspondence analysis are employed to identify the sources of heavy metals and the relationship between sampling points and variables. These findings provided some useful insights for making appropriate management strategies to prevent or decrease heavy-metal pollution around a coal gangue dump in the Yangcaogou coal mine and other similar areas elsewhere.

Abstract:Soils in areas wherein agriculture and mining coexist are experiencing serious heavy metal contamination, posing a great threat to the ecological environment and human health. In this study, heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in agricultural soil samples from mining areas were analyzed to explore pollution status, bioavailability, potential sources, and ecological/health risks. Particularly, the coupling model of Monte Carlo simulation-triangular fuzzy number (MCS-TFN) was established to quantify ecological/health risks accurately. Results showed that Cd was heavily enriched in soil and had the highest bioavailability based on both geo-accumulation index ( I geo ) and chemical speciation analysis. Pollution sources apportioned with the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model demonstrated that heavy metals were mainly derived from agricultural activities, followed by mining activities and natural sources. The MCS-TFN ecological risk assessment classified Cd into the high-risk category with a probability of 40.96%, whereas other heavy metals were categorized as the low risk. Cd was regarded as the major pollutant for the ecosystem. Moreover, the MCS-TFN health risk assessment indicated that As showed high noncarcinogenic risk (0.07% probability) and moderate carcinogenic risk (1.87% probability), and Cd presented low carcinogenic risk (80.19% probability). As and Cd were identified as the main heavy metals that pose a threat to human health. The MCS-TFN risk assessment is superior to the traditional deterministic risk assessment since it can obtain the risk level and the corresponding probability, and significantly reduce the uncertainty in risk assessment.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil has negative impact on crop quality and eventually on human health. A total of 24 top soil samples were collected from paddy field near the Zhangji Coal Mine in Huainan City, Anhui Province. Seven heavy metals (Cu, Zn, As, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Ni) were selected to evaluate the pollution status through total content and chemical speciation, geo-accumulation index (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">I</em><sub>geo</sub>), and risk assessment code (RAC) and investigate leaching behavior of heavy metals under simulated rainfall. The results of present study indicated that mining activities were responsible for elevated Cu and Cd in surrounding paddy soil. Based on the results of chemical speciation, most heavy metals were associated with the residual fraction, and the environmental risk of heavy metals in soil was sequenced as Pb > Cd > Ni > As > Zn > Cu > Cr. It revealed that Pb in soil would pose a higher environmental risk due to its higher reducible fraction, then followed by Cd, Ni, As, and Zn, which would pose a medium risk. The result of simulated rainfall leaching analysis showed that heavy metals could be categorized into two groups: concentrations of Cu, Ni, Cd, Zn, and Cr in the leachates displayed a continuous decrease tendency with the increase in accumulative simulated rain volume; whereas leachable tendency of As and Pb was enhanced with increasing leaching time and rain volume. Generally, the leaching percentage of heavy metals followed the sequence of As > Zn > Ni > Cd > Cr > Cu > Pb. More attention should be paid to the higher environmental risk of Pb and higher leaching percentage of As with regard to ecosystem safety and human health.

Ecological Health Risk Assessment and Source Identification of Heavy Metals in Surface Soil Based on a High Geochemical Background: A Case Study in Southwest China

Abstract:A total of 28,095 surface soil samples were collected in areas with high natural background levels; the potential ecological risk is generally low, and the high-risk area is small and mainly affected by lead–zinc mines. The contribution to the potential ecological risk factor (RI) is as follows: Hg > Cd > As > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Zn, with noncarcinogenic chronic risks of Cr > As > Cd > Pb > Ni > Cu > Hg > Zn; furthermore, dermal contact is the main pathway of exposure causing health risks. The total carcinogenic risks caused by heavy metals were as follows: Cr > Cd > As > Pb; and the risks posed by Cr, Cd, and As were higher than the threshold value (1.0 × 10−4); people face a higher threat to heavy metals in soils in Zhenxiong, Ludian, Huize, Weixin, and Zhaoyang. The evaluation result of the EPA PMF model shows that the soil heavy metals are mainly composed of five sources, of which basalt, Permian, and Triassic carbonate rock parent material constitute the natural background source, while the mining activities of lead–zinc mines and the emissions of coal burning by residents constitute the anthropogenic source. The contribution was ranked in order of lead–zinc mining (26.7%) > Triassic carbonate (23.7%) > basalt (20.9%) > coal burning and automobile emissions (16.1%) > Permian carbonate (12.6%).

Abstract:This study aims to analyze the pollution characteristics and sources of heavy metal elements for the first time in the Zhundong mining area in Xinjiang using the linear regression model. Additionaly, the health risks with their probability and infleuencing factors on different groups of people's were also evaluated using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation approach. The results shows that 89.28% of Hg was from coal combustion, 40.28% of Pb was from transportation, and 19.54% of As was from atmospheric dust. The main source of Cu and Cr was coal dust, Hg has the greatest impact on potential ecological risks. which accounted for 60.2% and 81.46% of the Cu and Cr content in soil, respectively. The all samples taken from Pb have been Extremely polluted (100%). 93.3% samples taken from As have been Extremely polluted. The overall potential ecological risk was moderate. Adults experienced higher non-carcinogenic risks of heavy metals from their diets than children. Interestingly, body weight was the main factor affecting the adult's health risks. This research provides more comprehensive information for better soil management, soil remediation, and soil pollution control in the Xinjiang mining areas.

Abstract:Asbestos is widely used in construction, manufacturing, and other common industrial fields. Human activities such as mining, processing, and transportation can release heavy metals from asbestos into the surrounding soil environment, posing a health hazard to the mining area's environment and its surrounding residents. The purpose of the present study was to determine the extent of ecological and human health damage caused by asbestos pollution, as well as the primary contributors to the contamination, by examining a large asbestos mine and the surrounding soil in China. The level of heavy metal pollution in soil and sources were analyzed using methods such as the geo-accumulation index (I geo ), potential ecological risk index (RI), and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. A Monte Carlo simulation-based health risk model was employed to assess the health risks of heavy metals in the study area's soil to human beings. The results showed that the concentrations of As, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Ni in the soil were 1.74, 0.13, 13.31, 0.33, and 33.37 times higher than the local soil background values, respectively. The I geo assessment indicated significant accumulation effects for Ni, Cr, and As. The RI evaluation revealed extremely high comprehensive ecological risks (RI ≥ 444) in the vicinity of the waste residue heap and beneficiation area, with Ni exhibiting strong individual potential ecological risk (Eir ≥ 320). The soil health risk assessment demonstrated that As and Cr posed carcinogenic risks to adults, with mean carcinogenic indices (CR) of 1.56E − 05 and 4.14E − 06, respectively. As, Cr, and Cd posed carcinogenic risks to children, with mean CRs of 1.08E − 04, 1.61E − 05, and 2.68E − 06, respectively. Cr also posed certain non-carcinogenic risks to both adults and children. The PMF model identified asbestos contamination as the primary source of heavy metals in the soil surrounding the asbestos mining area, contributing to 79.0%. According to this study, it is recommended that management exercise oversight and regulation over the concentrations of Ni, Cr, Cd, and As in the soil adjacent to asbestos mines, establish a designated control zone to restrict population activities, and locate residential zones at a safe distance from the asbestos mine production zone.

Abstract:The concentrations of the heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, As, Cu and Zn in soil and locally produced grain (rice) were determined in paddy soil and rice around an abandoned high-arsenic coal mine area of Xingren county, southwest China. The health risk assessment was used to assess the multimedia and multipathway health risks of HM exposure in the study area. The results showed that the concentrations of As, Pb and Cd in soil were all higher than the corresponding limits for HMs in China. In terms of the accumulation and transfer capacity, Cd was more likely to transfer from the roots to rice, and its strong mobility may pose potential risks to local residents. The non-carcinogenic risks and carcinogenic risks of HM exposure in different media and exposure pathways were higher in children than adults. The total non-carcinogenic risks and carcinogenic risks in adults and children were higher than the standard limit values because of the HM exposure through ingesting rice husk. Among the exposure pathways evaluated, the contribution of diet was the largest, and As was the most important heavy metal in terms of the non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk factors. The total non-carcinogenic risks and carcinogenic risks caused by As in dietary crop (rice) accounted for 52% of the total in both adults and children. In order to maintain the health of residents in the study area, it is necessary to strictly strengthen the monitoring of heavy metal pollution in the study area and find effective soil improvement methods to reduce the health risks caused by heavy metal exposure.
