Abstract:Soil heavy metal contamination caused by mining is a significant issue in China. The site of this study is located in Ganzhou of Jiangxi province in China. 102 soil samples were collected along the Yangmeijiang River. ICP-MS was used to obtain heavy metal concentrations in the soils. Significant contamination was found in the agriculture soils adjacent to the river and near mining industries. The heavy metal concentrations were high at depths of 20 cm and 40 cm. According to geo-accumulation index Igeo, the soils were extremely polluted with Cd (Igeo = 4–7), heavily polluted with As (Igeo = 2–4), moderately to heavily polluted with Pb, Zn and Cu (Igeo = 0–4) and virtually unpolluted with Ni, Cr and Hg (Igeo = -3–1). These results may be a result of large amounts of As, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn being produced by nearby copper heap leach facilities. Based on USEPA method for health risk assessment, with ingestion being the major pathway for health risks, heavy metals pose a non-carcinogenic risk to adults (HQmax = 2.87, CRmax = 4.25 × 10-4), but pose both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk to children (HQmax = 20, CRmax = 1.15×10-3). Overall, As, Pb and Cr pose the primary health risks for the soils in the study area.

Abstract:In this study, based on the assessment of soil heavy metals (HMs) pollution using relevant indices, a comprehensive approach combined network environ analysis (NEA), human health risk assessment (HHRA) method and positive definite matrix factor (PMF) model to quantify the risks among ecological communities in a special environment around mining area in northwest Yunnan, calculated the risk to human health caused by HMs in soil, and analyzed the pollution sources of HMs. The integrated risks for soil microorganisms, vegetations, herbivores, and carnivores were 2.336, 0.876, 0.114, and 0.082, respectively, indicating that soil microorganisms were the largest risk receptors. The total hazard indexes (HI T ) for males, females, and children were 0.542, 0.591, and 1.970, respectively, revealing a relatively high and non-negligible non-carcinogenic risks (NCR) for children. The total cancer risks (TCR) for both females and children exceeded 1.00E-04, indicating that soil HMs posed carcinogenic risks (CR) to them. Comparatively, Pb was the high-risk metal, accounting for 53.76%, 57.90%, and 68.09% of HI T in males, females, and children, respectively. PMF analysis yielded five sources of pollution, F1 (industry), F2 (agriculture), F3 (domesticity), F4 (nature), and F5 (traffic).

Abstract:To investigate the contaminant characteristics of heavy metals in soils and vegetables surrounding a lead-zinc mine in Huize County, Yunnan Province, thirty surface soil samples and vegetable samples were collected to measure the contents of heavy metals, including lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and cadmium (Cd). The potential risk was evaluated by using the single factor pollution index, Nemerow comprehensive pollution index, and target hazard index. The results showed that the contents of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd in the soil were 954.1, 2236.5, 151.1, and 4.83 mg·kg−1, respectively. Compared with the soil background values in Yunnan Province, the soil surrounding the lead-zinc mine was polluted by Pb, Zn and Cd. The Nemerow comprehensive pollution index evaluation indicated that the soil was heavily polluted. The contents of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd in vegetables were 117.5–778.6, 430.3–2212.4, 16.8–89, and 1.28–34.3 mg·kg−1, respectively. Among them, the contents of Pb and Cd in vegetables exceeded the pollutant limit in food products of China's National Standard for Food Safety (GB 2762–2017). The contents of Pb, Zn and Cd in the soil were extremely significantly or significantly correlated with the contents of Pb, Zn and Cd in the edible parts of vegetables. The results indicated that there was serious heavy metal pollution and significant health risk for the soil and vegetables surrounding the lead-zinc mine. The research results not only reveal the contaminant characteristics of heavy metals in soils and vegetables surrounding a lead-zinc mine in Huize County, Yunnan Province, but also could provide a scientific evidence for reasonable utilization and ecological remediation.

Abstract:Background: Accelerated modern industrial processes, extensive use of pesticides and fertilizers and remaining issues of wastewater irrigation have led to an increasingly severe composite pollution of heavy metals in arable land. Soil contamination can cause significant damage to ecological environments and human health. Mineral resource mining can result in varying degrees of heavy metal pollution in surrounding water systems and soil. As a plateau lake, Hongfeng Lake has a fragile watershed ecosystem. Coupled with the rapid development of the current socio-economy and the ongoing activities of mining, urbanization and agricultural development, the water and soil environment of the lake and arable land are facing serious heavy metal pollution. Therefore, the situation warrants attention. Methods: This study focused on characterizing soil types and conducted sampling and laboratory testing on the farmland soil in Hongfeng Lake. The integrated Nemero comprehensive pollution assessment and potential ecological pollution assessment methods were used to evaluate the heavy metal pollution status. The APCS-MLR model was employed to explore the sources of heavy metal pollution. In addition, the human health risk model was used to analyze the association between heavy metal content in cultivated land and human health risks. Results: The single-factor pollution of each element was ranked in descending order: Hg > As > Pb > Cr > Cd, with Hg being the main pollutant factor. The entire area was subjected to mild pollution according to the pollution index. Pollution source analysis indicated two main pollution sources. Hg, As, Pb and Cr pollution mainly resulted from Source 1 (industrial and natural activities), accounting for 71.99%, 51.57%, 67.39% and 68.36%, respectively. Cd pollution was mainly attributed to Source 2 (agricultural pollution source), contributing 84.12%. The health risk assessment model shows that heavy metals posed acceptable carcinogenic risks to humans rather than non-carcinogenic risks. As was the main non-carcinogenic risk factor, while Cr was the main carcinogenic risk factor, with higher risks in children than adults. Conclusion: Our study identified the heavy metal pollution in farmland soil in Hongfeng Lake, evaluated and analyzed the pollution sources and identified the heavy metal elements in cultivated lands that have the greatest impact on human health risks. The aim of this study is to provide a scientific basis for soil heavy metal pollution control.

Abstract:Understanding the contamination and sources of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) at historical sites is vital for safeguarding human health and the ecological environment. This study focused on As, Hg, Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Cr concentrations in the residual soil, groundwater, and surface water around a mineral processing plant. The sources of these elements and the human health risks posed by them were evaluated using various indexes. Soil HM concentrations exceeded background values for Yunnan Province, ranked as As > Pb > Cd > Cu > Hg > Ni. The river water met China's Class II waterbody standard; however, Cd, Cu, Pb, and pH exceeded the maximum permissible sewage discharge concentrations in the accumulated water. The groundwater showed severe HM pollution, meeting China's Class III water quality standard. The average value of the Nemerow pollution index was consistent with that of the single-factor pollution index in the following order: As > Pb > Cd > Ni > Cu > Hg. Children face heightened risk through the oral ingestion of As, Cd, and Pb, particularly in high-value sampling points in the residue deposit area. The main sources of these pollutants are anthropogenic activities and the soil formation matrix.

Abstract:The environmental assessment and identification of sources of heavy metals in Zn-Pb ore deposits are important steps for the effective prevention of subsequent contamination and for the development of corrective measures. The concentrations of eight heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soils from 40 sampling points around the Jinding Zn-Pb mine in Yunnan, China, were analyzed. An environmental quality assessment of the obtained data was performed using five different contamination and pollution indexes. Statistical analyses were performed to identify the relations among the heavy metals and the pH in soils and possible sources of pollution. The concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn were extremely high, and 23, 95, 25, and 35% of the samples, respectively, exceeded the heavy metal limits set in the Chinese Environmental Quality Standard for Soils (GB15618-1995, grade III). According to the contamination and pollution indexes, environmental risks in the area are high or extremely high. The highest risk is represented by Cd contamination, the median concentration of which exceeds the GB15618-1995 limit. Based on the combination of statistical analyses and geostatistical mapping, we identified three groups of heavy metals that originate from different sources. The main sources of As, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu are mining activities, airborne particulates from smelters, and the weathering of tailings. The main sources of Hg are dust fallout and gaseous emissions from smelters and tailing dams. Cr and Ni originate from lithogenic sources.

Abstract:Previous studies on the impact of the mining of metal-bearing minerals on surrounding soil mainly focused on single or a few areas. However, these studies' results cannot provide effective making-support for soil pollution control in large-scale areas, especially in cross-provincial scale. This study first collected 78 literature before 2020 on soil heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) affected by the mining of metal-bearing minerals in Southwest China. Then, the geo-accumulation index, ecological risk, and health risk were assessed based on the extracted heavy metal data. Results showed that As, Cd, Hg, and Pb should be selected as the preferentially controlled heavy metals; Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces should be selected as the preferentially concerned areas; children should be given priority attention. The results provided more effective decision support for reducing heavy metal pollution in the areas affected by the mining of metal-bearing minerals in Southwest China.

Abstract:Soil contamination by heavy metals (HMs) leads to significant decreases in soil ecosystem quality, seriously threatening human survival and development. Studies on soil HMs have focused on the sources, distributions, and influencing factors. However, soil HM migration and speciation, which indirectly affect HM distributions and their ecological risks, have often been overlooked. In this study, we investigated the links between the sources, distributions, and influencing factors of soil HMs, as well as their ecological risks at several levels, by analyzing soil samples collected from a Pb-Zn mining area. Soil column experiments were also performed to assess Pb leaching in the soil. The results indicate that soil HMs accumulated in front of the mountain river outlets, at the entrance of the underground river, and at soil depths of 0–40 cm. Cd and Pb were the main contributors to the high ecological risk in the soil, and As and Cr were the main contributors to cancer risk. The source analysis indicates that mining and smelting activities were the main sources of total soil HMs (32.55%), as well as the main sources of Sb (83.43%), Pb (68.65%), and Cu (45.37%). Mining activity and continuous riverine transport were the main sources of Cd (69.93%) and Zn (52.38%). These anthropogenic sources have major impacts on the ecological environment in the study area. Factors such as pH, clay and silt contents, soil organic matter content, and cation exchange capacity influenced the distributions and total amounts of Cu, Mn, Zn, and Pb species.

Abstract:A total of 28,095 surface soil samples were collected in areas with high natural background levels; the potential ecological risk is generally low, and the high-risk area is small and mainly affected by lead–zinc mines. The contribution to the potential ecological risk factor (RI) is as follows: Hg > Cd > As > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Zn, with noncarcinogenic chronic risks of Cr > As > Cd > Pb > Ni > Cu > Hg > Zn; furthermore, dermal contact is the main pathway of exposure causing health risks. The total carcinogenic risks caused by heavy metals were as follows: Cr > Cd > As > Pb; and the risks posed by Cr, Cd, and As were higher than the threshold value (1.0 × 10−4); people face a higher threat to heavy metals in soils in Zhenxiong, Ludian, Huize, Weixin, and Zhaoyang. The evaluation result of the EPA PMF model shows that the soil heavy metals are mainly composed of five sources, of which basalt, Permian, and Triassic carbonate rock parent material constitute the natural background source, while the mining activities of lead–zinc mines and the emissions of coal burning by residents constitute the anthropogenic source. The contribution was ranked in order of lead–zinc mining (26.7%) > Triassic carbonate (23.7%) > basalt (20.9%) > coal burning and automobile emissions (16.1%) > Permian carbonate (12.6%).

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution of soil in agricultural areas is the most prominent environmental pollution problem in China, seriously affecting human health and food security. It has become one of the environmental problems to which all sectors of society attach great importance. Soil heavy metals in the weathering area of hazardous geological bodies in southwest China have naturally high background attributes. Therefore, ecological risk assessment and analysis of potential sources of soil heavy metals in southwest China is of great significance for soil health management, soil heavy metal pollution control and territorial spatial planning. In this study, we collected 787 soil samples (0–20 cm) in Xuanwei County in China and analyzed the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in soils. Igeo, RI, HI and CR were used to calculate the pollution levels, ecological risks and human health risks. Additionally, the PMF model and one-way ANOVA were used to identify the potential sources and discuss the factors affecting the enrichment of heavy metals. The results showed that the mean contents of the surface soils were 1.190 (Cd), 139.4 (Cr), 96.74 (Cu), 0.081 (Hg), 56.97 (Ni), 46.66 (Pb) and 130.1 (Zn) mg/kg. All heavy metals exceeded the background values of the A layer soil in Yunnan Province. The Igeo showed that Cd was the most hazardous element in the study area, followed by Cu, Cr, As, Ni and Pb. The RI showed that low ecological risks, moderate ecological risks, considerable ecological risks and strong ecological risks accounted for 3.81%, 55.27%, 37.74% and 3.18%, respectively, of the total samples, and Cd was the main dominant element. The HI values of the As element in children were greater than 1, indicating a non-carcinogenic risk, and other elements' risks were acceptable. The CR values of Cr and Ni were higher than their limits (1 × 10−4), and both had carcinogenic risks in children and adults, as did As in children. According to the PMF model, four heavy metals sources were identified: geological sources (32%), sources from mining activities (19.38%), atmospheric deposition sources (17.57%) and agricultural sources (31.05%). Thereinto, As and Pb were mainly derived from agricultural sources, Cd and Cr were mainly associated with geological sources, Cu was largely from mining activity sources, Hg was mainly from atmospheric deposition sources and Ni and Zn were mainly from geological sources, mining activities and agricultural activities. The parent material has a significant influence on the enrichment of heavy metals in the soil, and the heavy metals are significantly enriched in the carbonate parent material and quaternary parent material. Topography also plays a role in heavy metal accumulation; Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn gradually decreased with the increase in altitude, and As and Pb increased with the increase in altitude. Mn-oxide played a crucial part in the enrichment of Cu and Zn, while SOC, K2O and pH had little influence on the accumulation of heavy metals.

Abstract:Yunnan Province is rich in mineral resources. Early mining, processing, metallurgy, and other mining activities produce three industrial wastes (waste water, waste gas, and waste residue) causing environmental pollution. Considering the legacy site of a mineral processing plant in Yunnan as the research object, 21 sampling points in the study area and 12 control sampling points in the periphery were set up to determine the contents of the heavy metal(loid)s As, Hg, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Cr in the soil. The spatial distribution of heavy metal(loid)s was interpolated and analyzed using Arcmap10.8, and combined with the single-factor index, Nemero Comprehensive Pollution Index, and the health risk assessment method for the heavy metal(loid) pollution status and health risk of the soil were evaluated. The soil in the study area was acidic, with the largest average value of elemental As and the largest percentages of control and screening values. The results of the single-factor and Nemero composite pollution index showed the following trend: As > Pb > Cd > Cu > Ni > Hg. Cd, Cu, and Pb mainly originate from mining and metallurgy and Hg from the combustion of fossil fuels, while soil-forming substrates are the main sources of Ni. Pollution by As was the most prominent element, whereas pollution by Cd, Cu, and Pb in some areas also cannot be ignored to prevent negative impacts on residents. It is recommended to remediate and treat the soil on site for public events; therefore, this study fills the gap in studying potential ecological risks, human health risk assessments, and sources of exposure (oral ingestion, respiratory ingestion, dermal contact).

Abstract:Soil-heavy metal pollution in mining areas is one of the problems in the comprehensive treatment of soil environmental pollution. To explore the degree of soil-heavy metal pollution and the human health risk in mining areas, the contents of soil As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Cr(VI) in an abandoned gold mining area were determined. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo), single-factor pollution index (SPI), Nemerow comprehensive pollution index (NCPI), potential ecological risk index (PERI), and the human health risk assessment model were used to assess the pollution degree and the risk of soil-heavy metal pollution. Finally, the assessment results were used to provide remediation guidance. The results showed that (1) the average contents of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni in the mining area exceeded the background values of the soil elements. (2) The mining area was polluted by heavy metals to different degrees and had strong potential ecological hazards. (3) The total carcinogenic risk of heavy metals exceeded the health risk standard. The main components of pollution in the mining area were As, Cd, Cr, and Hg. Results from this study are expected to play a positive role in pollution treatment and the balance between humans and ecology.

Abstract:The impacts of heavy metal pollution in arable soil on agricultural production, environmental health, and the wellbeing of urban and rural residents cannot be overlooked. It has become a significant bottleneck in achieving comprehensive rural revitalization. To accurately grasp the characteristics of heavy metal pollution in suburban cultivated soil, Tangwang Village (a suburb of Huainan City) was subjected to scrutiny. The contents of heavy metals (Hg, Cu, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cd, and Zn) in the topsoil of cultivated land in this area were detected, and their spatial distribution characteristics were analyzed using inverse distance spatial interpolation. (1) After conducting a comprehensive analysis and thorough examination of the PMF model sources, it was determined that Cu, Cd, and Zn exhibit a direct correlation with agricultural practices, collectively contributing to a cumulative percentage of 21.10%. Meanwhile, Cr is derived from a combination of sources, including both natural parent materials and human activities, accounting for a total proportion of 24.45%. Notably, lead emissions from automobile exhausts constitute a significant source, while arsenic is primarily associated with dispersed factories and their respective operations, contributing to respective proportions of 36.38% and 18.07%. It is evident that agricultural practices, transportation, and industrial activities are the main reasons for heavy metal pollution in arable soil. (2) The evaluation of geological accumulation indicators reveals that the level of soil arsenic accumulation pollution is mild to moderate (1.199). On the other hand, the cumulative pollution level of Cd, Hg, Cr, and Cu was relatively low (0.462→0.186), whereas the levels of Pb and Zn were below the threshold. (3) The assessment of the ecological risk index revealed that the predominant elements posing potential ecological risks in the investigated region were Hg, As, and Cd, with average Ei values of E(Hg) = 86.81, E(As) = 80.67, and E(Cd) = 67.83, respectively. (4) The human health risk assessment revealed significant differences in the single non-carcinogenic risk values of heavy metals generated by different exposure pathways, with oral ingestion > dermal contact > oral nasal inhalation. Children were more susceptible to the toxic effects of heavy metals compared to adults. Both As and Cr caused an increased risk of cancer in both children and adults, which is a matter of great concern. The results of this study contribute to a more accurate description of the sources of heavy metals in farmland soil. This study indicates that the application of PMF for soil source analysis yields clear results that can be further applied. This research also has potential policy significance as it can help to improve the sustainability of ecosystems by coordinating both environmental and human activities.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in groundwater is one of the most severe environmental issues in the area undergoing mining activities, but the underlying sources of heavy metals and the resulting health risk are not fully understood. In this study, 100 shallow groundwater samples and six mining wastewater samples were collected in a multi-mineral resource, North China. The results showed that the distribution of mine ore resources and hydrogeochemical processes were related to the enrichment of Cd, As, Cu, and Ni in groundwater in the piedmont sloping plain, the southwest of the study area, and enrichment of Pb, Zn, and Hg in eastern mountainous and river valley. Water–rock interaction was the primary underlying source of As, Pb, Ni, and Cr(VI) with the non-negligible influence of mining activities, while Cd, Zn, and Hg were potentially originated from the anthropogenic activities (mining or agriculture). A combination of self-organizing map (SOM) and health risk assessment demonstrated the carcinogenic risks of Cd, As, and Cr(VI) to children and adults (exceeding the unacceptable risk level, 1 × 10–6 < CRtotal < 1 × 10–4), particularly in the piedmont sloping plain and mountain valleys. The total carcinogenic risks for children were much higher than adults, which followed the orders as Cr(VI) > As > Cd, whereas the total non-carcinogenic hazard index of Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Hg to children and adults was negligible. Therefore, there was a concern for carcinogenic risk that must be addressed in the multi-mineral resource area, with a particular focus on the Cr(VI) and As as the primary health risk management and control indexes in groundwater.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution (HMP) from mining operations severely threatens soil ecosystems and human health. Identifying the sources of soil heavy metals (HMs) and assessing source-specific risks are critical for developing effective risk mitigation strategies. In this study, a combination of methodologies including PMF, Monte Carlo analysis, soil pollution risk index, and a human health risk assessment model were utilized to investigate soil HM risks in a typical ancient mining area in Daye City, China, considering both environmental pollution and human health impacts. Cu emerged as the most significant soil pollution risk, whereas As posing the highest health risk. About 48.44 % of the multi-element integrated soil pollution risk has escalated to the heavy level. Furthermore, around 22.42 % of the non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) and 9.53 % of the carcinogenic risk (CR) exceeded unacceptable thresholds (THI > 1 for NCR and TCR > 1E-4 for CR). The PMF model identified four distinct sources: the smelting industry, traffic emissions, a combination of agricultural and natural factors, and mining activities. The mixed agricultural and natural source significantly impacted health risks, contributing 42.17 % to NCR and 53.88 % to CR, followed by the mining source, contributing 31.67 % to NCR and 24.07 % to CR. Interestingly, the mining source contributed the highest soil pollution risk at 42.45 %, while the mixed agricultural and natural source exhibited the lowest at 16.33 %. Furthermore, the study explored source-specific risk components by evaluating the contributions of different sources to specific elements. The mining source was identified as the focus for soil HMP control, followed by the mixed agricultural and natural source. Overall, this study provided an in-depth analysis of soil heavy metal risks in mining areas from the source apportionment perspective, which broadened the research framework of soil heavy metal source analysis and risk assessment, potentially providing scientific guidance for managing regional soil HMP.

Abstract:The quality and safety of agricultural soil are the foundation of crop production, and the traceability of heavy metals (HMs) is a prerequisite for effective contamination control. In order to identify the risks and contaminationc sources of HMs in agricultural soils, a combination of multivariate statistics, geographic information system (GIS), and positive matrix factorization model (PMF) was used to identify sources of contamination in agricultural soils of Tongren City; besides, potential ecological and health risks specific to the contaminant sources were calculated on the basis of contribution from variables. The results indicated that the mean values of Cd (0.34 ± 0.17 mg/kg), Cu (30.76 ± 10.94 mg/kg), Hg (2.51 ± 4.71 mg/kg), Pb (36.06 ± 35.95 mg/kg), and Zn (112.10 ± 62.29 mg/kg) in agricultural soil were significantly greater than the local background values. The HMs content of agricultural soil performed a clustering trend in space, showing a positive correlation. High values of soil Hg content were concentrated in the eastern areas of the Tongren City, where mining activities were intensive, and high values of soil Cd content were mainly found in the central areas. The HMs in the agricultural soil were generally at moderately contaminated levels. Sources of pollution for HMs were identified as smelting source (39.7%), natural source (33.2%), agricultural source (15.8%), and mining source (11.3%). Agricultural soils in the study area were generally at a high potential ecological risk level. The health risks for children were high level and required attention. The mining and smelting source were the main risk sources of the study area. In this study, a comprehensive methodology for risk assessment based on pollution sources was proposed to provide a valuable reference for risk prevention and control of HMs in agricultural soils.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the mining industry, the pollution of heavy metal(loid)s in soils near copper (Cu) mining sites is a significant concern worldwide. However, the pollution status and probabilistic health risks of heavy metal(loid)s of soils associated with Cu mines, have rarely been studied on a global scale. In this study, eight heavy metal(loid) concentrations in soil samples taken near 102 Cu mining sites worldwide were obtained through a literature review. Based on this database, the heavy metal(loid) pollution and ecological risk in soils near Cu mines were evaluated. Most of the study sites exceeded the moderately to heavily polluted levels of Cu and Cd; compared to other regions, higher pollution levels were observed at sites in Oman, China, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Soil pollution by Cd, Pb, and Zn at agricultural sites was higher than that in non-agricultural sites. In addition, these heavy metal(loid)s produced a high ecological risk to soils around Cu mining sites in which the contribution of Cd, Cu, and As reached up to 46.5%, 21.7%, and 18.4%, respectively. The mean hazard indices of the eight heavy metal(loid)s were 0.209 and 0.979 for adults and children, respectively. The Monte Carlo simulation further predicted that 1.40% and 29.9% of non-carcinogenic risk values for adults and children, respectively, exceeded the safe level of 1.0. Moreover, 84.5% and 91.0% of the total cancer risk values for adults and children, respectively, exceeded the threshold of 1E-04. Arsenic was the main contributor to non-carcinogenic risk, while Cu had the highest exceedance of carcinogenic risk. Our findings indicate that the control of Cu, Cd, and As should be prioritized because of their high incidence and significant risks in soils near Cu mines. These results provide valuable inputs for policymakers in designing effective strategies for reducing the exposure of heavy metal(loid)s in this area worldwide.

Abstract:An in-depth understanding of the ecological and health risks posed by heavy metals originating from various pollution sources is critical for foresighted soil-quality management. Based on 220 grid samples (2 × 2 km) analyzed for eight heavy metals (Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn) in the Chenshui (CS) watershed of Hunan Province, China, we applied an integrated approach for identifying and apportioning pollution sources of soil heavy metals and exploring their source-specific pollution risks. This approach consists of three sequential steps: (1) source identification by combining the positive matrix factorization model with geostatistical analysis; (2) quantification of ecological, carcinogenic, and non-carcinogenic risks in a source-specific manner; (3) prioritization of sources in a holistic manner, considering both ecological risks and human health risks. Cd (68.0%) and Hg (13.3%) dominated the ecological risk in terms of ecological risk index; As dominated the non-carcinogenic health risk in terms of total hazard index (THI; adults: 84.8%, children: 84.7%) and the carcinogenic health risk in terms of total carcinogenic risk index (TCRI; adults: 69.0%, children: 68.8%). Among three exposure routes, oral ingestion (89.4–95.2%) was the predominant route for both adults and children. Compared with adults (THI = 0.41, TCRI = 7.01E-05), children (THI = 2.81, TCRI = 1.22E-04) had greater non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Four sources (F1–4) were identified for the CS watershed: atmospheric deposition related to coal-burning and traffic emissions (F1, 18.0%), natural sources from parent materials (F2, 34.3%), non-ferrous mining and smelting industry (F3, 37.9%), and historical arsenic-related activity (F4, 9.8%). The F3 source contributed the largest (45.2%) to the ecological risks, and the F4 source was the predominant contributor to non-carcinogenic (52.4%) and carcinogenic (64.6%) risks. The results highlight the importance of considering legacy As pollution from abandoned industries when developing risk reduction strategies in this region. The proposed methodology for source and risk identification and apportionment formulates the multidimensional concerns of pollution and the various associated risks into a tangible decision-making process to support soil pollution control.

Abstract:The level of concentration of heavy metal in soil is detrimental to soil quality. The Heigangkou-Liuyuankou irrigation area in the lower-reach of Yellow River irrigation, as home to a large population and a major site to agricultural production, is vulnerable to heavy metal pollution. This study examined soil quality in Heigangkou-Liuyuankou irrigation areas of Kaifeng, China. Pollution in soil and potential risks introduced by heavy metal accumulation were assessed using Nemerow, Geoaccumulation, and Hakanson's ecological risk indices. Statistics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to model and present the spatiotemporal changes of the pollution sources and factors affecting the levels of pollution. The heavy metals found in the sampled soil are Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg. Among them, Cd is more concentrated than the others. The southwestern region of the studied area confronts the most serious heavy metal pollution. There exist spatial disparities of low concentrations of different heavy metals in the study area. Hg and Cd are found to pose the highest potential ecological risks. However, their risk levels are not the same across the study area. Levels concentration of Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, and Hg in soil are highly correlated. In combination, they post an additional threat to the ecological environment. Transportation, rural settlements, and water bodies are found to be the major sources of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg pollution in the soil; among the major sources, transportation is the most significant factor.

Abstract:Mining activities typically discharge considerable amounts of heavy metals into the environment, raising concerns about soil metal pollution, environmental security, and human well-being. Therefore, a systematic regional-scale investigation of soil heavy metal pollution in mining areas is necessary for soil management. In this study, 5817 soil samples from the Huainan coal mining area collected for studies conducted from 2000 to 2021 were compiled to quantify the pollution level and spatiotemporal variation of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Hg, Ni, and Mn). The associated ecological health risk of heavy metals in soil was assessed using the Hakanson ecological hazard index, Monte Carlo simulation in conjunction with the total hazard quotient, and the hazard index. Cd was the top contaminant, followed by Hg. In terms of spatial distribution, heavy metal contamination was more severe in the eastern area of Fengtai and Datong districts, because these districts of Anhui Province are significant industrial regions. In addition, the results of the Monte Carlo evaluation of human health risks showed that the total noncarcinogenic risk of heavy metals in soil is below the acceptable level, while the carcinogenic risk was 5.97% for adults and 15.53% for children. As accounted for 57.4% of noncarcinogenic risk, Cr contributed 36.1% of carcinogenic risk. Compared with adults, children are more vulnerable to the carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks posed by heavy metals, with oral consumption being the primary exposure route. This research can provide useful details for protecting the environment and managing soil in a coal mining area.
