Abstract:The process of rapid urbanization has led to an increase in energy consumption and pollution emissions, posing a significant threat to the environment, as well as human life and health. This is particularly evident in resource-based cities and towns where factors of production rely heavily on unsustainable development patterns. It is imperative to establish an emergency response mechanism for high-priority risks. In this study, risk indices were used to analyze the characteristics of soil HM pollution. The Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) model and Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) model were used to assess the probabilistic health risks posed by HMs and were combined with the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model to identify the major sources contributing to these risks. The soil contamination and ecological risks were assessed to be at minimal levels, with Cd and Hg identified as the predominant contaminants. Probabilistic HHRA indicated that health risks were higher for children than for adults. Specifically, HMs present unacceptable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks with probabilities of 8.63% and 30.83% for children, respectively, while adults faced negligible non-carcinogenic risks and acceptable carcinogenic risks, both with a certainty of 100%. The PMF model identified five sources, including fuel combustion, agriculture, natural processes, transportation emissions, and processing and manufacturing. These sources were found to contribute insignificantly to non-carcinogenic risks for all populations but presented notable carcinogenic risks. Ni and Cr were identified as the leading elements contributing to health hazards, with transportation recognized as a priority anthropogenic source warranting regulatory attention. In this study, the assessment of pollution levels and health hazards mostly relied on HM concentrations, demonstrating a limited influence of toxicity. This research exemplifies the use of probabilistic risk assessment based on specific sources, which can offer new perspectives on the risk assessment of soil HMs in resource-dependent cities and towns as well as valuable insights into the development of risk prevention and control strategies.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution (HMP) from mining operations severely threatens soil ecosystems and human health. Identifying the sources of soil heavy metals (HMs) and assessing source-specific risks are critical for developing effective risk mitigation strategies. In this study, a combination of methodologies including PMF, Monte Carlo analysis, soil pollution risk index, and a human health risk assessment model were utilized to investigate soil HM risks in a typical ancient mining area in Daye City, China, considering both environmental pollution and human health impacts. Cu emerged as the most significant soil pollution risk, whereas As posing the highest health risk. About 48.44 % of the multi-element integrated soil pollution risk has escalated to the heavy level. Furthermore, around 22.42 % of the non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) and 9.53 % of the carcinogenic risk (CR) exceeded unacceptable thresholds (THI > 1 for NCR and TCR > 1E-4 for CR). The PMF model identified four distinct sources: the smelting industry, traffic emissions, a combination of agricultural and natural factors, and mining activities. The mixed agricultural and natural source significantly impacted health risks, contributing 42.17 % to NCR and 53.88 % to CR, followed by the mining source, contributing 31.67 % to NCR and 24.07 % to CR. Interestingly, the mining source contributed the highest soil pollution risk at 42.45 %, while the mixed agricultural and natural source exhibited the lowest at 16.33 %. Furthermore, the study explored source-specific risk components by evaluating the contributions of different sources to specific elements. The mining source was identified as the focus for soil HMP control, followed by the mixed agricultural and natural source. Overall, this study provided an in-depth analysis of soil heavy metal risks in mining areas from the source apportionment perspective, which broadened the research framework of soil heavy metal source analysis and risk assessment, potentially providing scientific guidance for managing regional soil HMP.

Abstract:Source-specific risk apportionment for soil heavy metals (HMs) is crucial for pollution mitigation and risk control in coal-mining areas. The ecological and human health risks resulting from different sources were evaluated through an integrated method that combines risk assessments with positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Thirty soil samples were collected from a typical coal-mining city in central China and analyzed for six HMs (Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, As, and Hg). The results indicate that surface soil in the study area suffered from moderate HMs pollution, especially pollution by Cd and Hg. Four potential sources of soil HMs were identified and quantified in the study area, including natural source (27.7%), traffic emissions (33.4%), agricultural practices (16.2%), and industrial activities (22.7%). The ecological risk of the study area was at moderate level, and the leading contributions in urban and suburban areas were from industrial activities and agricultural practices, respectively. The non-carcinogenic risks for adults and children were lower than the risk threshold, while the carcinogenic risks ranged between 1E−06 and 1E−04, suggesting that carcinogenic risks and hazards to human health should not be neglected. Traffic emissions and natural sources mainly contributed to the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, due to the strong non-carcinogenicity and carcinogenicity of As and Ni. These findings highlight the ecological and health risks linked to potential sources of soil HMs contamination and provide valuable information on the reduction of corresponding risks for local environmental managers.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the pollution characteristics, source apportionment, and health risks associated with trace metal(loid)s (TMs) in the major agricultural producing areas in Chongqing, China. We analyzed the source apportionment and assessed the health risk of TMs in agricultural soils by using positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and health risk assessment (HRA) model based on Monte Carlo simulation. Meanwhile, we combined PMF and HRA models to explore the health risks of TMs in agricultural soils by different pollution sources to determine the priority control factors. Results showed that the average contents of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in the soil were found to be 0.26, 5.93, 27.14, 61.32, 23.81, 32.45, and 78.65 mg/kg, respectively. Spatial analysis and source apportionment analysis revealed that urban and industrial sources, agricultural sources, and natural sources accounted for 33.0%, 27.7%, and 39.3% of TM accumulation in the soil, respectively. In the HRA model based on Monte Carlo simulation, non-carcinogenic risks were deemed negligible (hazard index <1), the carcinogenic risks were at acceptable level (10−6 <total carcinogenic risk ≤ 10−4), with higher risks observed for children compared to adults. The relationship between TMs, their sources, and health risks indicated that urban and industrial sources were primarily associated with As, contributing to 75.1% of carcinogenic risks and 55.7% of non-carcinogenic risks, making them the primary control factors. Meanwhile, agricultural sources were primarily linked to Cd and Pb, contributing to 13.1% of carcinogenic risks and 21.8% of non-carcinogenic risks, designating them as secondary control factors.

Abstract:Mining activities typically discharge considerable amounts of heavy metals into the environment, raising concerns about soil metal pollution, environmental security, and human well-being. Therefore, a systematic regional-scale investigation of soil heavy metal pollution in mining areas is necessary for soil management. In this study, 5817 soil samples from the Huainan coal mining area collected for studies conducted from 2000 to 2021 were compiled to quantify the pollution level and spatiotemporal variation of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Hg, Ni, and Mn). The associated ecological health risk of heavy metals in soil was assessed using the Hakanson ecological hazard index, Monte Carlo simulation in conjunction with the total hazard quotient, and the hazard index. Cd was the top contaminant, followed by Hg. In terms of spatial distribution, heavy metal contamination was more severe in the eastern area of Fengtai and Datong districts, because these districts of Anhui Province are significant industrial regions. In addition, the results of the Monte Carlo evaluation of human health risks showed that the total noncarcinogenic risk of heavy metals in soil is below the acceptable level, while the carcinogenic risk was 5.97% for adults and 15.53% for children. As accounted for 57.4% of noncarcinogenic risk, Cr contributed 36.1% of carcinogenic risk. Compared with adults, children are more vulnerable to the carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks posed by heavy metals, with oral consumption being the primary exposure route. This research can provide useful details for protecting the environment and managing soil in a coal mining area.

Abstract:In recent years, heavy metal contamination of soils has become a major concern in China due to the potential risks involved. To assess environmental pollution and human health risks in a typical heavy metal polluted site in Jiangxi Province, a thorough evaluation of the distribution, pollution levels, and sources of heavy metals in soils of the Yangmeijiang River watershed was conducted in this study. Positive matrix factorization and Monte Carlo simulation were used to evaluate the ecological and human health risks of heavy metals. The research findings indicate that heavy metal pollution was the most severe at the depth of 20–40 cm in soils, with local heavy metal pollution resulting from mining and sewage irrigation. The high-risk area accounted for 91.11% of the total area. However, the pollution level decreased with time due to sampling effects, rainfall, and control measures. Leaf-vegetables and rice were primarily polluted by Cd and Pb. The main four sources of heavy metals in soils were traffic emission, metal smelting, agricultural activities and natural sources, mining extraction, and electroplating industries. Heavy metals with the highest ecological risk and health risk are Cd and As, respectively. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of children were 7.0 and 1.7 times higher than those of adults, respectively. Therefore, children are more likely to be influenced by heavy metals compared to adults. The results obtained by the risk assessments may contribute to the identification of specific sources of heavy metals (e.g., traffic emissions, metal smelting, mining excavation, and electroplating industries). Additionally, the environmental impacts and biotoxicity associated with various heavy metals (e.g., Cd and As) can also be reflected. These outcomes may serve as a scientific basis for the pollution monitoring and remediation in the mining-affected areas.

Abstract:The present study conducted the concentration evaluation, pollution assessment, source analysis, and risk assessment of heavy metals in the soil of the CPUA, China, to contribute to the smooth construction of urban agglomeration. Elevated levels of mean concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) in the soils were shown compared to background values. Cu and zinc (Zn) and also lead (Pb) and Cd exhibited spatial similarity. Manganese (Mn) and Cr exhibited point source characteristics such as the concentrations at a point much higher than the surrounding area. The potential ecological risk in the northern region belonged to the moderate risk level category. Cd contributed over 90% to the potential ecological risk. The health risk among children was higher than that among adults. The major exposure pathways were different for adults and children. Exposure, as shown using Hazard Index (HI), to adults was mainly through the skin contact route, while to children was through both the skin contact and ingestion route. The primary CR (carcinogenic risk) to adults was through the inhalation route, while that to children was through the ingestion route. In both children and adults, Cr was the main contributor to HI and CR. According to the Monte Carlo simulation results, the cumulative probability of exceeding the critical value of HI for children was approximately 2.8–3.0 times that for adults. According to the sensitivity analysis results, non-carcinogenic risk prevention should begin mainly by reducing exposure duration and skin contact. The cancer risk may be reduced primarily by decreasing the exposure duration and controlling ingestion. The PMF (Positive Matrix Factorization) source analysis revealed that Pb mainly came from transportation sources. In addition, Cu, Pb, and Mn were derived mainly from agricultural sources. Cr was derived mostly from a natural source, and Cd originated mainly from an industrial source.

Abstract:Smelting activities are considered as the primary cause of heavy metal (HM) accumulation in soils, and the human health around the smelter has been a great concern worldwide. In this study, a total of 242 agricultural soil samples were collected around a large scale Pb/Zn smelter in China, and eight HMs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) were analyzed to assess HMs status, ecological -health risks, and identify source. Monte Carlo simulation was utilized to evaluate the probabilistic health risks, and positive matrix factorization (PMF) was employed to identify sources. The results revealed the average contents of five heavy metals (Cd 5.28 mg/kg, Pb 203.36 mg/kg, Hg 0.39 mg/kg, Zn 293.45 mg/kg, Cu 37.14 mg/kg) are higher than their background values in Hunan province. Cd had the highest mean pollution index (PI) of 41.8 and the greatest average ecological risk index (Er) of 1256.34, indicating that Cd was the primary enriched pollutant and had a higher ecological risk than other HMs. The mean hazard index (HI) through exposure to eight HMs was 2.95E-01 and 9.74E-01 for adults and children, respectively, with 35.94% of HI values for children exceeding the risk threshold of 1. Moreover, the mean total cancer risks (TCR) were 2.75E-05 and 2.37E-04 for adults and children, respectively, with 75.48% of TCR values for children exceeding the guideline value of 1E-04. In addition, the positive matrix factorization results showed smelting activities, natural sources, agricultural activities and atmospheric deposition were the three sources in soils, with the contribution rate of 48.62%, 22.35%, and 29.03%, respectively. The uncertainty analysis of the PMF indicated that the three-factor solution is reliable. This work will provide scientific reference for the comprehensive prevention of soil HM pollution adjacent to the large smelter.

Abstract:The concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in 78 urban soil samples from Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China were determined in the study. The mean values of the eight heavy metals were lower than the natural background reference values of soils from Henan Province, with the exception of Cd and Pb. However, the peak values for six species of the elements exceed the corresponding reference values, indicating enrichment of these metals in urban soils in Zhengzhou City, especially for Cd and Pb. The spatial distribution patterns showed that levels of As, Co, Mn and Ni decreased gently from northwest to southeast without hot-pot area, whereas Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were with significant spatial variability. PMF model coupled with Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to apportion and quantify possible sources of the eight elements. Four Factors (natural source, industrial production, agricultural activities and traffic discharges) were distinguished and their respective contribution rates were 18.73%, 33.22%, 23.91% and 24.14%, respectively. Results of uncertainty analysis confirmed that the all four source Factors based on the PMF model were reliable. Furthermore, the probability distribution of health risk assessed by means of Monte Carlo simulation revealed that non-carcinogenic risks associated with heavy metals were acceptable for both adults and children, while the total carcinogenic risk values remained relatively high. Additionally, the children were more susceptible to health risks in comparison to adults, and the ingestion way was considered to be the major exposure pathway. The results of source-oriented health risk demonstrated that the agricultural source was the major contributor to health risks, which was characterized by As, Ni and Co.

Abstract:Urban Parks are important places for residents to engage in outdoor activities, and whether heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in park soils are harmful to human health has aroused people's concern. A total of 204 topsoil samples containing nine HMs were collected from 78 urban parks of Shanghai in China, and used to assess the health risks caused by HMs in soils. The results revealed that the Hg, Cd and Pb were the main enriched pollutants and posed higher ecological risks than the other HMs. Four HM sources (including natural sources, agricultural activities, industrial production and traffic emissions) were identified by combining the Positive matrix factorization model and Correlation analysis, with the contribution rate of 48.24%, 7.03%, 13.04% and 31.69%, respectively. The assessment of Probabilistic health risks indicated that the Non-carcinogenic risks for all populations were negligible. However, the Total carcinogenic risk cannot be negligible and children were more susceptible than adults. The assessment results of source-oriented health risks showed that industrial production and traffic emissions were estimated to be the most important anthropogenic sources of health risks for all populations. Our results provide scientific support needed for the prevention and control of HM pollution in urban parks.
Research on health risk assessment of heavy metals in soil based on multi-factor source apportionment: A case study in Guangdong Province, China

Abstract:Environmental problems caused by heavy metal pollution in soil have attracted widespread attention worldwide. Identifying and quantifying the heavy metal pollution sources and risks is crucial for subsequent soil management. In this study, an integrated source-risk method for source apportionment and risk assessment based on the PMF model, the geodetector model and the health risk assessment model (HRA) was proposed and applied. Analysis of Hg, As, Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Zn in 208 topsoils showed that the average contents of eight heavy metals were 1.87–5.86 times greater than corresponding background values, among which Cd and As were relatively high, which were higher than the specified soil risk screening values, high-value areas of heavy metals are mainly concentrated in the central part of the study area. The source apportionment showed that the accumulation of heavy metals was affected by five sources: atmospheric deposition (16.3 %), natural sources (33.1 %), industrial activities dominated by metal mining (15.1 %), industrial activities dominated by metal smelting (12.6 %) and traffic sources (22.9 %). The results of the health risk assessment showed that the carcinogenic risks (adult: 4.74E-05, children: 7.41E-05) of heavy metals in soil to the study population were both acceptable, the non-carcinogenic risk of adult (THI = 0.277) was within the limit, while the non-carcinogenic risk of children (THI = 1.70) was higher than the limit value. Ingestion (89.5 %–95.9 %) contributed the greatest health risk among all exposure routes. Source 3 (arsenic-related industrial activities dominated by metal mining) contributed the most to the HI and CRI of adults and children (all above 50 %), therefore, in the formulation stage of soil management strategy in this area, priority should be given to the control and management of this pollution source. These results can provide more detailed support for environmental protection departments to propose targeted soil pollution control measures.

Abstract:Soils in areas wherein agriculture and mining coexist are experiencing serious heavy metal contamination, posing a great threat to the ecological environment and human health. In this study, heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in agricultural soil samples from mining areas were analyzed to explore pollution status, bioavailability, potential sources, and ecological/health risks. Particularly, the coupling model of Monte Carlo simulation-triangular fuzzy number (MCS-TFN) was established to quantify ecological/health risks accurately. Results showed that Cd was heavily enriched in soil and had the highest bioavailability based on both geo-accumulation index ( I geo ) and chemical speciation analysis. Pollution sources apportioned with the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model demonstrated that heavy metals were mainly derived from agricultural activities, followed by mining activities and natural sources. The MCS-TFN ecological risk assessment classified Cd into the high-risk category with a probability of 40.96%, whereas other heavy metals were categorized as the low risk. Cd was regarded as the major pollutant for the ecosystem. Moreover, the MCS-TFN health risk assessment indicated that As showed high noncarcinogenic risk (0.07% probability) and moderate carcinogenic risk (1.87% probability), and Cd presented low carcinogenic risk (80.19% probability). As and Cd were identified as the main heavy metals that pose a threat to human health. The MCS-TFN risk assessment is superior to the traditional deterministic risk assessment since it can obtain the risk level and the corresponding probability, and significantly reduce the uncertainty in risk assessment.

Abstract:Asbestos is widely used in construction, manufacturing, and other common industrial fields. Human activities such as mining, processing, and transportation can release heavy metals from asbestos into the surrounding soil environment, posing a health hazard to the mining area's environment and its surrounding residents. The purpose of the present study was to determine the extent of ecological and human health damage caused by asbestos pollution, as well as the primary contributors to the contamination, by examining a large asbestos mine and the surrounding soil in China. The level of heavy metal pollution in soil and sources were analyzed using methods such as the geo-accumulation index (I geo ), potential ecological risk index (RI), and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. A Monte Carlo simulation-based health risk model was employed to assess the health risks of heavy metals in the study area's soil to human beings. The results showed that the concentrations of As, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Ni in the soil were 1.74, 0.13, 13.31, 0.33, and 33.37 times higher than the local soil background values, respectively. The I geo assessment indicated significant accumulation effects for Ni, Cr, and As. The RI evaluation revealed extremely high comprehensive ecological risks (RI ≥ 444) in the vicinity of the waste residue heap and beneficiation area, with Ni exhibiting strong individual potential ecological risk (Eir ≥ 320). The soil health risk assessment demonstrated that As and Cr posed carcinogenic risks to adults, with mean carcinogenic indices (CR) of 1.56E − 05 and 4.14E − 06, respectively. As, Cr, and Cd posed carcinogenic risks to children, with mean CRs of 1.08E − 04, 1.61E − 05, and 2.68E − 06, respectively. Cr also posed certain non-carcinogenic risks to both adults and children. The PMF model identified asbestos contamination as the primary source of heavy metals in the soil surrounding the asbestos mining area, contributing to 79.0%. According to this study, it is recommended that management exercise oversight and regulation over the concentrations of Ni, Cr, Cd, and As in the soil adjacent to asbestos mines, establish a designated control zone to restrict population activities, and locate residential zones at a safe distance from the asbestos mine production zone.

Abstract:In this study, based on the assessment of soil heavy metals (HMs) pollution using relevant indices, a comprehensive approach combined network environ analysis (NEA), human health risk assessment (HHRA) method and positive definite matrix factor (PMF) model to quantify the risks among ecological communities in a special environment around mining area in northwest Yunnan, calculated the risk to human health caused by HMs in soil, and analyzed the pollution sources of HMs. The integrated risks for soil microorganisms, vegetations, herbivores, and carnivores were 2.336, 0.876, 0.114, and 0.082, respectively, indicating that soil microorganisms were the largest risk receptors. The total hazard indexes (HI T ) for males, females, and children were 0.542, 0.591, and 1.970, respectively, revealing a relatively high and non-negligible non-carcinogenic risks (NCR) for children. The total cancer risks (TCR) for both females and children exceeded 1.00E-04, indicating that soil HMs posed carcinogenic risks (CR) to them. Comparatively, Pb was the high-risk metal, accounting for 53.76%, 57.90%, and 68.09% of HI T in males, females, and children, respectively. PMF analysis yielded five sources of pollution, F1 (industry), F2 (agriculture), F3 (domesticity), F4 (nature), and F5 (traffic).

Abstract:A total of 28,095 surface soil samples were collected in areas with high natural background levels; the potential ecological risk is generally low, and the high-risk area is small and mainly affected by lead–zinc mines. The contribution to the potential ecological risk factor (RI) is as follows: Hg > Cd > As > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Zn, with noncarcinogenic chronic risks of Cr > As > Cd > Pb > Ni > Cu > Hg > Zn; furthermore, dermal contact is the main pathway of exposure causing health risks. The total carcinogenic risks caused by heavy metals were as follows: Cr > Cd > As > Pb; and the risks posed by Cr, Cd, and As were higher than the threshold value (1.0 × 10−4); people face a higher threat to heavy metals in soils in Zhenxiong, Ludian, Huize, Weixin, and Zhaoyang. The evaluation result of the EPA PMF model shows that the soil heavy metals are mainly composed of five sources, of which basalt, Permian, and Triassic carbonate rock parent material constitute the natural background source, while the mining activities of lead–zinc mines and the emissions of coal burning by residents constitute the anthropogenic source. The contribution was ranked in order of lead–zinc mining (26.7%) > Triassic carbonate (23.7%) > basalt (20.9%) > coal burning and automobile emissions (16.1%) > Permian carbonate (12.6%).

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) in soil near metal smelting areas have attracted great interest due to their crucial threat to agricultural product safety and human health. We investigated HMs in agricultural soils and crops (wheat and maize) in a Pb/Zn smelting city, central China; analysed the exposure risk of HMs through multiple pathways in a soil-crop system through Monte Carlo simulations; and identified the key driving factors using random forest (RF) model. The results showed that most soil HMs exceeded their background level. Cd had the highest exceeding rate compared with the screening values and the highest exceeding rate (40%, in wheat) compared with the food safety limit. Additionally, Cd had the highest bioaccumulation capacity in both maize and wheat. In identifying the key driving factors of soil HMs, RF had a satisfactory prediction performance for As, Cd, and Pb, with corresponding R 2 values of 0.47, 0.51, and 0.60, respectively, with the dominant factors being distance to the Pb/Zn smelter, coal washery, and road area, respectively. However, Cr and Hg exhibited lower R 2 values which may be due to their limited influence from the selected anthropogenic, traffic, and industrial variables. Probabilistic health risk assessments through Monte Carlo simulations revealed that the non-carcinogenic risk was around the risk limit (HI=1), while the carcinogenic risk for both children and adults exceeded the risk limit (TCR=1E-04), and adults had higher carcinogenic risk than children, which was due to a longer duration of exposure and higher ingestion rate of crop grains in adults. Cd had the highest carcinogenic risk and the highest probability of exceeding the limiting risk. Briefly, levels of Cd in both soil and crops should be controlled, especially for the source of smelting emissions. The results of this study could be treated as valuable references for policymakers to formulate control strategies for soil HM pollution in agricultural areas near Pb/Zn smelting activities.

Abstract:Heavy metals (HMs) in soils pose significant risks on ecosystem and human health. To design targeted regulatory measures for mitigating and controlling the risk, it is necessary to accurately identify the pollution sources and environmental risks of soil HMs, as well as to reveal the linkages between them. To date, yet systematic investigation aimed at deciphering the links between source apportionment of soil HMs and their associated environmental risks is still lacking. To fill the gap, an integrated framework has been developed in this study and applied for dissecting the source-sink relationship and source-oriented ecological and health risks of soil HMs in Shanxi, a province with rich coal resource, in which long-term coal mining activities in history has resulted in soil HMs pollution and unavoidably posed environmental risks. Two advanced receptor models, multivariate curve resolution alternating least squares based on maximum likelihood principal component analysis (MCR-ALS/MLPCA) and multilinear engine 2 (ME2), have been employed for apportioning the potential sources, and their apportionment results are jointly incorporated into a modified ecological risk index and a probabilistic health risk assessment model for identifying the source-oriented ecological and health risks posed by soil metals. The results show that the soils in study area have been polluted by HMs (i.e., Cd, Cr, Hg and As) to varying degrees. Industrial activities (35%-35.8%), agricultural activities (11.1%-20.5%), atmospheric deposition (10.5%-13%) and mix source (31.5%-42.6%) are apportioned as the main contributors of soil HMs in the area. The source-oriented ecological risk assessment suggests Hg has presented significant ecological risk and largely contributed by the sources from atmospheric deposition and industrial activities. The source-oriented health risk assessment shows the non-carcinogenic hazard level and carcinogenic risk posed by soil HMs in the study area are acceptable. Relatively, industrial activities and mix source have contributed more on the health risks.

Abstract:Investigating heavy metal(oid)s (HMs) in urban soils is vital to safeguarding human life and health. This study investigated HMs in soils in urban areas of Beijing, assessed their ecological and health risks, and combined principal component analysis, geostatistical analysis, and positive definite matrix factor decomposition models to analyze them retrospectively. Although the Cu, Zn, and Pb in the soils of the study area were all below national quality standards, the average levels were 1.55, 1.17, and 1.21 times higher than the background values for HMs in Beijing soils, respectively, indicating the presence of HMs enrichment in the surface soils. Neither of the nine HMs in this study caused ecological risk. The health risk assessment results show that the nine HMs in this study do not yet pose a non-carcinogenic risk. Ni and Cu have significant carcinogenic effects on humans, and children are more susceptible to carcinogenic risks, with direct ingestion being the main route of HMs exposure. The main sources of HMs pollution in soils are industrial activities, soil-forming matrices and historical sites, which account for 32.89%, 44.16%, and 22.95% of total HMs accumulation respectively. We have found that V, Mn, Co, As, Ni, and Cr are mainly from parent material, Zn and Pb are mainly from industrial emissions, and Cu is from historical remains.

Abstract:To improve the ecological environment quality of industrial cities and protect the health of residents, we determined the priority control factors of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) pollution and risk in the resuspended street dust (RSD) of Shijiazhuang, an emblematic heavy-industrial city in North China, according to the probabilistic risk assessment method. The results showed that the HMs studied in Shijiazhuang RSD exhibited different pollution levels, that is, Hg showed moderate-to-severe pollution and above; Zn showed moderate-and-above pollution; Co, Cu and Pb showed non-pollution to moderate pollution; while As, Cr, Mn and Ni showed no pollution. The overall contamination of HMs in the RSD presented moderate-to-above contamination levels in >94% of samples. Mercury exhibited considerable-to-very-high ecological risk. The synthetic ecological risks of the HMs were considerable-to-above. The comprehensive pollution and synthetic ecological risk of HMs in Shijiazhuang RSD were mainly caused by Hg. The carcinogenic risk of HMs in RSD to local inhabitants and their non-carcinogenic risk to children should not be ignored. Coal-related industrial sources are a priority source to control. Hg and As are priority HMs to control. We suggest that local governments should strengthen the management of coal-related industrial sources and As and Hg emissions.
