Abstract:Abstract In this paper, microstructure evlution, hardness and tensile properties of Cu-15Ni-8Sn-(0.5Al) alloys during aging at 500°C were investigated in detail. The results showed that the grain was refined and the elongation of alloy at solid solution was improved with the additon.of Al. The DO22 ordered phase was suppressed during aging in the Cu-15Ni-8Sn-0.5Al alloy, while the L12 ordered phase stability was significantly improved. Therefore, the L12 ordered phase was not consumed by the discontinuous precipitation (DP) reaction during the prolonged aging process, which effectively suppressed the development of DP and improved the resistance to over-aging of the alloy. However, Al also leads to a serious decrease in the plasticity of Cu-15Ni-8Sn alloys, which has no yield point during tensile process after aging for 1h.
Solidification and microstructure characterizations of eutectic aluminum‐silicon casting alloy with the addition of tin

Abstract:The effects of tin (Sn) addition on aluminum-silicon and α-aluminum phase solidification parameters as well as eutectic aluminum-silicon casting alloy microstructure are systematically investigated. In this research, these characteristic parameters are examined by using computer-aided cooling curve thermal analyses. The results of microstructure analyses and cooling curves show that tin alters silicon structure. By increasing the amount of tin up to 1 wt.%, α-aluminum phase nucleation temperature, aluminum-silicon phase growth temperature, and last phase solidus temperature increase. The mean area of silicon particles decreases when 0.1 wt.% tin is added but by its further increasing up to 1 wt.%, silicon particle mean area increases. It means that increase of tin content does not lead to silicon structure modification in this type of aluminum-silicon alloy. Besides, by increasing the amount of tin, the reaction temperature of the last phase is increased by the formation of intermetallic compounds such as ternary compounds (Al−Si−Sn).

Abstract:This work investigated the effect of sintering temperatures (600–750°C) on mechanical and tribological behaviors of nickel-aluminium bronze (NAB) alloys developed by gas atomization and spark plasma sintering. Results indicated an increase of the volume fraction of B2-type NiAl precipitates with increasing sintering temperature, leading to an improvement of the yield strength and the wear resistance. Specifically, detailed microstructural analyses of sintered NAB alloys at 750°C showed the presence of ultrafine grains with an average size of 367nm, nanoscale twins with a volume fraction of 11.7% and dislocations with a density of 1.3 ± 0.1 × 1014m−2. A much higher yield strength of 620MPa was obtained in NAB, if compared to that of conventional cast counterparts (280–440MPa). Estimations of strengthening mechanisms suggested the predominant mechanism of grain boundary strengthening (335MPa) for NAB alloys with contributions from precipitate strengthening (54MPa), dislocation strengthening (75MPa), twin boundary strengthening (89MPa) and solid solution strengthening (50MPa). Moreover, dislocations was blocked at twin boundaries to form complex dislocation barriers and networks, further contributing to the high strength. The high wear resistance of NAB could be ascribed to the reduction of the local stress around crack tips due to the high elastic modulus mismatch (ENiAl/ECu), and to the crack extension toughening near the interface of the matrix and the precipitate caused by the high plastic mismatch (σNiAl/σCu).

Abstract:This study delves into the investigation of intermetallic compounds, specifically Al3Ni, Al3Sn, Al2Cu, Ni3Al, and their formation during the alloying additions and heat treatment procedures of Al-4%Cu alloy with the addition of Ni and Sn. After manufacturing, an extensive range of tests, encompassing hardness assessments, SEM and XRD analysis, and optical microscopy, were executed. The introduction of Nickel (Ni) and Tin (Sn) into the base alloy resulted in a gradual and significant enhancement in hardness, with Alloy 3 exhibiting the most remarkable improvement, showcasing a 214.18 % increase in hardness attributed to higher concentrations of Ni and Sn. Then, heat treatment was carried out that encompassed an initial homogenization phase at 400 °C for a duration of 8 h, followed by precise water quenching. Subsequently, controlled aging precipitation was conducted at 150 °C with distinct time intervals. Comparative analyses of the effect of heat treatment on the hardness values revealed substantial improvements whereas base alloy showed a 67.55 % improvement after the heat treatment. On the other hand, Alloy 1, Alloy 2, and Alloy 3 indicated a 73.26 %, 36.03 %, and 31.22 % enhancement of hardness values respectively. The heat treatment process aimed to meticulously explore the intricate influences of Ni and Sn on the age-hardening process, with specific consideration to identifying the optimal aging time. The incorporation of Ni and Sn into the alloys led to the formation of intermetallic compounds, effectively impeding dislocation movement. Remarkably, Alloy 1 with lower Ni and Sn contents exhibited the most favorable response to the heat treatment, demonstrating a substantial 73.26 % increase in hardness at the optimal aging time. SEM images unveiled the formation of finer precipitates resulting from the aging treatment. This study offers valuable insights into the impact of alloying additions and heat treatment on the microstructure and hardness properties of Al-4%Cu alloys, with potential implications in the fabrication of advanced materials.

Abstract:Recently, based on voice cepstral analysis, Benba et al. (IEEE T. Neur. Sys. Reh., vol. 24, pp. 1100-1108, 2016) have reported discrimination between patients with Parkinson's disease and different neurological disorders with high classification accuracy up to 90%. Using the same approach, we were able to experimentally separate two groups of normal healthy speakers with 96% classification accuracy and showed that the method proposed by Benba et al. may not be appropriate for discrimination between different neurological diseases. In particular, voice cepstral analysis appears to be sensitive to specific speakers' characteristics such as gender or age. Our findings emphasize several assumptions that can be considered as basic necessary conditions for research reporting speech data in progressive neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract:Structural and microhardness changes in an A1-0-26 at.-% Sn alloy quenched from the melt and annealed are presented. The experiments show that solid solution of 0-26 at.-% tin in aluminium, as seen in an electron microscope, can be obtained by means of rapid quenching from the liquid state. The kinetics and morphology of structure transformations are discussed in terms of vacancy-solute interactions in which clusters are formed through coagulation of Sn-vacancy couples. Growth of precipitates is explained by the ‘vacancy pumping’ model. The result of the clustering process is a structure containing spheroidal precipitates of β-tin, accommodated without strain in the aluminium matrix with definite crystallographic orientation relationships. The observed high transformation rate is attributed to the influence of an extra concentration of quenched-in vacancies which are assumed to be retained in the alloy bound to tin atoms as a consequence of their known high mutual binding energy.

Abstract:The structural evolution, mechanical properties and the oxidation characteristics of Ti50Ni50−xAlx alloys were investigated. The influence of additive Nb on the microstructure, mechanical properties as well as the high temperature oxidation resistance was examined. It is found that the substitution of Al for Ni can remarkably reinforce the TiNi-based intermetallics by precipitation of (Ti,Al)2Ni phase and by solid-solution strengthening effects. It is also found that the addition of Nb has beneficial influence on the mechanical properties of TiNiAl intermetallics, and that the oxidation resistance of TiNiAl(Nb) alloys can be effectively improved by the Nb addition. The effect of Nb on the high temperature oxidation behavior of TiNiAl(Nb) alloys has been discussed.

Abstract:Tin-based Babbitt alloys are a widely used bearing bushing material which have good comprehensive properties. However, problems such as high-temperature softening and insufficient bearing capacity occur during their use, so the optimization of tin-based Babbitt alloys has become a research hotspot. In this paper, ZChSnSb11-6 alloy was mainly prepared by the gravity casting method, and different amounts of Zn were added to the alloy (the mass fraction values were 0 wt.%, 0.05 wt.%, 0.1 wt.%, 0.15 wt.%, and 0.2 wt.%, respectively). Through the hardness test, the tensile test, the friction and wear test, and the microstructure observation of the prepared alloy, the influence of Zn on the organization and properties of the ZChSnSb11-6 alloy was analyzed. The results show that the size of the SnSb hard phase changed with the increasing content of Zn. The size of the hard phase of the SnSb tended to increase first and then decrease, and the number of phase particles increased first and then decreased, resulting in changes in performance. Through comparison, it was learned that the addition of Zn can effectively improve the hardness, tensile strength, yield strength, and wear resistance of the alloy, but the elongation rate was reduced. When the Zn content was 0.1 wt.%, the hardness value of the alloy reached the maximum value, 25.82 HB, which increased by 7.3% when compared with the sample without Zn. The hardness of the Zn, 0.15 wt.%, is close to that of the Zn, 0.1 wt.%. Compared to the sample without Zn, the tensile strength and elongation of the alloy were maximized at a Zn content of 0.15 wt.%. Compared to the sample without the Zn, the tensile strength was increased by 21.29%, and the elongation rate was increased by 46%. An analysis showed that the alloy has good comprehensive mechanical properties when the Zn content is 0.15 wt.%.

Abstract:This study explores the influence of tin (Sn) content on the properties of Ti7CuXSn (X=2, 7, and 15 wt.%) alloys, in both as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The investigation reveals that an elevated Sn content within the Ti7Cu alloy results in the formation of finer grain structures. Rapid quenching processes lead to the development of an ultrafine martensitic structure and the formation of (Ti,Sn) 2 Cu intermetallic compounds within the Ti7CuXSn alloys. Subsequent heat treatment processes induce the transformation of the ultrafine martensitic structure into a coarser one, accompanied by an increase in the volume fraction of (Ti,Sn) 2 Cu. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis validates the presence of α/α'-Ti(Sn,Cu) phases and (Ti,Sn) 2 Cu intermetallics across all alloy compositions. The Ti7Cu15Sn alloy demonstrates higher microhardness, primarily attributed to its smaller grain size, reduced lamellar spacing, and increased volume fraction of (Ti,Sn) 2 Cu. Furthermore, all specimens exhibit heightened microhardness following heat treatment due to the martensitic structure with heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation of (Ti,Sn) 2 Cu intermediate growth. Electrochemical analysis reveals an enhanced corrosion resistance in the Ti7Cu15Sn alloy, attributed to its elevated Sn content. Nonetheless, the as-cast Ti7Cu15Sn alloy displays superior corrosion resistance, albeit with a marginal reduction in electrochemical performance following heat treatment. Surface characterization signifies the formation of a uniform oxide film, underscoring commendable corrosion resistance in both as-cast and heat-treated Ti7CuXSn alloys. Additionally, the study investigates the deposition of strontium (Sr)-doped ceramic coatings on as-cast Ti7Cu15Sn alloys. It is demonstrated that higher current density parameters yield denser and more crystalline Sr-HA coatings. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping confirms the successful incorporation of Sr into the coating, showcasing its potential for applications in the field of biomedicine. Thus, this investigation highlights the significant impact of Sn content on microstructural refinement, enhancements in mechanical properties, and improved electrochemical performance within Ti7CuXSn alloys. These findings offer valuable insights for the design and optimization of alloy performance in diverse applications.

Abstract:In present work, microstructure, martensitic transformation behavior and mechanical properties of (Ti50Ni40Cu10)(100-x)Nb-x(x = 0, 5, 10, 15 at.%) alloys were investigated as a function of Nb content. The addition of Nb to TiNiCu alloy leads to the presence of beta-Nb phase. During cooling and heating, the alloys show one-step B2 <-> B19 transformation. As the Nb content increases, the transformation temperatures almost linearly decrease and the transformation hysteresis monotonously increases due to the decrease of middle eigenvalue of the phase transformation matrix. The addition of Nb is effective in improving the elongation because of the introduction of beta-Nb phase. With the increase of Nb content, both the yield strength and the critical stress to induce martensitic transformation increase, resulting in the improved superelastic strain. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this study, three cycles of combined cold rolling and annealing (CRA) were applied to study the mechanical behavior of NiAl bronze (NAB) alloy. The underlying mechanisms for microstructure and mechanical properties were elucidated. Microstructure characterization and quantitative analysis demonstrated significant morphology changes by CRA. The results showed that large α-Cu phase is compressed, lamellar κ III phase is broken and sphericalized, and κ II phase accumulates and forms a hard phase band skeleton. Finally, the microstructure with spheroidized κ III phase embedded in the skeleton of the κ II phase is obtained. The optimal ultimate tensile strength of 903 MPa and yield strength of 596 MPa are obtained after one cycle of CRA, which exhibits an improvement of about 40 % and 130 % compared to the as-cast samples, respectively. The best ductility of 18.0 % is obtained after three cycles of CRA, with an improvement of about 75 % over the as-cast samples. The high strength is mainly attributed to the grain refinement and high density of dislocations. Additionally, the higher density of low-angle grain boundaries can promote the formation and growth of twins. The saturation fraction of twin boundaries in experimental alloys of about 66 % is achieved after two cycles of CRA.

Abstract:The effect of hot extrusion on microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, corrosion, and erosion-corrosion behaviors of a nickel-aluminium bronze (NAB) alloy (Cu-9Al-4.5Ni-4Fe-1Mn, wt.%) was investigated. After hot extrusion, the microstructure was refined and become more homogeneous. In addition, the layered structures were broken and sepheroidized. These microstructural changes lead to improved mechanical behavior (hardness, strength, and elongation) and higher resistance to corrosion/erosion-corrosion. The reduced potential between phases in hot-extruded NAB alloy, the denser and more uniform corrosion layer, and its strong bonding to the substrate, all lead to improved corrosion resistance, especially in flow conditions.

Influence of Ultrafine Additives of Intermetallides on the Structure, Mechanical, and Tribotechnical Properties of Sintered Tin Bronze

Abstract:The results of a study of the influence of the introduction of powders of intermetallic compounds of various compositions obtained by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) with preliminary mechanical activation on the structure, mechanical, and tribological properties of sintered bronze are presented. It was found that the introduction of 0.2–0.5 wt % of nickel and titanium aluminides, both single-phase and two-phase, leads to an increase in the density and strength of sintered bronze; maximum strength is achieved with the introduction of 0.2 wt % aluminides. The dependence of the hardness of powder bronze on the amount and composition of the intermetallic compound differs from the dependence of strength; with the introduction of single-phase intermetallic compounds, the hardness increases with increasing additive content, and with two-phase intermetallic compounds it decreases. It has been shown that the introduction of aluminides ensures a refinement of the structure of the bronze during sintering, and at an additive content of 1 wt %, an increase in the amount of eutectoid (α + δ). The introduction of aluminides also has a positive effect on the tribological properties of sintered bronze. With the introduction of 0.5 wt % two-phase nickel aluminide and 0.2 wt % single-phase titanium aluminide, the seizure pressure and wear resistance increase by 2.8 times and 3.5 times, respectively. Adding 0.5 wt % of single-phase nickel, titanium, and iron aluminides allows reducing the friction coefficient to 0.009–0.011, and two-phase iron aluminide to 0.005. The introduction of iron aluminides most effectively increases the tribological properties of sintered bronze, so the seizure pressure increases to 10 MPa and wear resistance by almost 10 times. Aluminides help reduce the relief of the friction surface during adhesive wear of sintered bronze and the formation of microlacunae, which are additional reservoirs for lubrication. The smoothest friction surface and a higher content of microlacunae are observed in samples made of powder bronze with the addition of single-phase iron aluminide.

Abstract:In pursuit of enhanced microstructural and mechanical properties, follow-weld forced cooling wire arc additive manufacturing (CWAAM) was employed for the fabrication of nickel aluminium bronze (NAB) components. The application of compressed gas metal arc welding (GMAW) system was implemented to mitigate the interference of cooling gas with the arc. A comprehensive examination of the microstructural and mechanical was conducted with and without the cooling source. Compared to WAAM sample, the grains size in CWAAM decreased by more than two times, attributed to higher melt pool subcooling. The 〈100〉 texture in CWAAM specimens showed a decrease due to the emergence of equiaxed grains and grain refinement, reducing the anisotropy of materials. Moreover, the dislocation density in CWAAM samples increased by 62.7%, owing to forced cooling that generated additional dislocations and suppressed recrystallization. Consequently, the average 0.2% yield strength (338.7 MPa) and ultimate tensile strength (687.3 MPa) of CWAAM specimens exhibited an approximate increase of 20% and 8.6%, respectively, in comparison to WAAM samples. This enhancement in yield strength is primarily ascribed to grain boundary strengthening and dislocation strengthening, instead of solid solution strengthening or precipitation strengthening.

Abstract:Improvement of mechanical and tribological behaviors of zinc-based die cast alloy is necessary for bearing applications, and chemical modification is found to be a good choice. Chemical modification of Zn-27wt.% Al alloy was carried out with 1%, 2% and 3% nickel through casting route, and its effect on microstructure, hardness, and dry sliding wear behavior was investigated. Significant refinement of dendritic microstructure is observed along with a transformation from rosette to near rounded morphology with the increase in nickel content of base alloy. With 1% nickel modification, an aluminum-rich Al 3 Ni intermetallic compound of string type forms in inter dendritic region, while with 2% and 3% nickel modifications, a nickel-rich AlNi 3 intermetallic compound of lath/plate type is formed within the intra dendritic region. Hardness of the base alloy is improved through grain boundary strengthening at a lower concentration of nickel, and particulate strengthening and spinodal decomposition are the reason for increase in hardness of the alloy with a higher content of nickel. Coefficient of friction and wear rate of base alloy is decreased with increasing nickel amount. Worn surface is characterized by delamination, smearing and grooving. The wear mechanism is transferred from adhesion to abrasive via oxide film formation with an increase in amount of nickel.

Abstract:The composition and pouring temperature are important parameters in metal casting. Many cast product failures are caused by ignorance of the influence of both. This research aims to determine the effect of adding tin composition and pouring temperature on fluidity, microstructure and mechanical properties including tensile strength and hardness of tin bronze (Cu-Sn). The Cu-Sn is widely used as employed in the research is Cu (20, 22 and 24) wt.%Sn alloy using the investment casting method. Variations in pouring temperature treatment TS1 = 1000°C and TS2 = 1100°C. The mold for the fluidity test is made with a wax pattern then coated in clay. The mold dimensions are 400 mm long with mold cavity variations of 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5 mm. Several parameters: increasing the pouring temperature, adding tin composition, decreasing the temperature gradient between the molten metal and the mold walls result in a decrease in the solidification rate which can increase fluidity. The α + δ phase transition to β and γ intermetallic phases decreases fluidity at >22wt.%Sn. The columnar dendrite microstructure increases with the addition of tin composition and pouring temperature. The mechanical properties of tensile strength decrease, hardness increases and the alloy becomes more brittle with increasing tin composition.

Abstract:Ni micro-alloying effects on the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Sc-Zr alloy have been thoroughly investigated, by the combined use of electron/atom microscopic characterization and first-principles calculations. A trace addition of 0.2 wt% Ni can induce a new primary phase of Al 3 (Ni, Cu) and further refine the grain size to 23 μm. A higher dislocation density with more sub-grains can be retained after hot extrusion and the subsequent solid-solution treatment. Ni could also promote the precipitation of η phase and improve its thermal stability, and in the meantime, Ni can segregate to Al GBs and directly enhance the GB binding. Eventually, even with a very low Cu/Mg atomic ratio (∼0.22), Ni micro-alloyed Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Sc-Zr alloys can achieve remarkably high strength and thermal stability with an acceptable level of plasticity, as compared to most 7055 Al alloys.

Abstract:The diminutive additions of nickel (Ni) element have been fused to Sn-1.5Ag-0.5 mass% Cu (SAC155) lead-free solder alloy. The study was examined experimentally and computationally (using JMatPro software program) the microstructural features, thermal behavior, density, thermal diffusivity, and conductivity as well as tensile stress strain of the Sn-1.5Ag-0.5Cu-x mass %Ni (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, and 0.50) solder alloys (SAC155-xNi). The fusing additions of Ni have a little impact on the melting point of SAC155 alloy which increasing from 502 to . The microstructure of SAC155 solder alloy included coarse grains of β-Sn besides, large eutectic regions, and embedded IMCs of Ag 3 Sn and Cu 6 Sn 5 . The computed values of Gibbs free energy (G) during solidification of the β-Sn phase, Ag 3 Sn, and Sn 3 Sn 4 IMCs show the stability at , , and , respectively. The SAC155-xNi alloys involved finer β-Sn grains, large fibrous eutectic regions, (Cu,Ni) 6 Sn 5 and (Cu,Ni) 3 Sn 4 IMCs. The G of Cu 6 Sn 5 decreased from to when Ni content increased up to 0.25 mass %, then stable and steady at with more addition of Ni element. The formation of the (Cu, Ni) 6 Sn 5 and (Ni, Cu) 3 Sn 4 IMCs is motivated by the lowest Gibbs free energy, especially when Ni mass% is added to a sufficient level. The measured and computed values of specific heat at constant pressure ( C p ) of SAC155-xNi alloys show a good matching especially at lower temperatures and a little mismatch at high temperatures which decreases with increasing Ni content. The activation energy of atomic arrangement (Q) increased from 11.36 to with increasing Ni content in SAC155-xNi alloys. Thermal diffusivity (α) and conductivity (κ) of SAC155-xNi gradually decreased with increasing temperature in the range from 303 to 423 K and/or Ni content in alloys. The measured values of (κ) are slightly lower than the computed value at similar temperatures of the SAC155-xNi alloys. The decrease in (κ) may be assigned to scattering the electrons or reducing the phonon contributions due to the presence of various solute atoms and different IMCs. The results of stress-strain graphs reveal the enhancement of YS and UTS for all Ni-containing alloys. The improvement of the yield stress (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of Ni-containing alloys is attributed to the uniform distribution of the IMCs, the reduction of β-Sn grain size, and the smoothed enlargement of the eutectic region.

Abstract:A comparative study on the variation in microstructure and wear behavior of tin bronze substrate surface alloyed with varying nickel content was carried out in this research. Cu–10Sn–XNi surface composite was developed using gas tungsten arc (GTA) heat source and friction stir processing (FSP) techniques. A stark comparison of the surface properties obtained by the two modification processes and the effect of Ni content were studied. The surface modification resulted in a reduction in the size of the grains, while the average grain size was comparatively lesser in GTA modified samples. Ni was found to be present in the alloyed zone as solid solution and also in the form of fine precipitates. A 30% increase in hardness was observed for both GTA and FSPed samples of which GTA exhibited superior increment. Same trend was also witnessed in the case of wear rate. The variation in hardness obtained at different levels of Ni concentration reiterated the formation of a functionally graded tin bronze alloyed with Nickel.

Abstract:Powder metallurgy is an effective method to produce Cu-Al-based alloys for automotive and aerospace engineering components. The finer grain size, low cost, and low-temperature synthesis make this process more suitable than the other conventional production method such as melting and casting. The addition of Ni (austenite stabilizer) into the Cu increases the stability of Cu and refines the grain size. Again, the addition of Ni into the Cu-Al alloy increases the strength and hardness. In the present work, Cu-12Al alloys are developed by varying the wt.% of Ni content from 0 to 8 using powder metallurgy process through mechanical alloying method. Mechanical alloyed powder mixture is compacted by applying a load of 5 tons and sintered at 850 °C for 1 h under nitrogen atmosphere. It is found that α-Cu, γ2-Cu9Al4, and NiAl phases are presented in the Cu-12Al-Ni alloy which influences the properties of the alloy. The theoretical, sintered, and relative density values are decreased with increasing the wt.% of Ni content. However, the Vickers hardness of the alloy is improved by increasing the wt.% of Ni content up to 4 wt.% and then reduced for 8 wt.% of Ni content due to the coarsening and network-type structure of the NiAl phase. A higher amount of wear loss or wear rate is observed for the Cu-12Al and Cu-12Al-2Ni alloy than the Cu-12Al-4Ni and Cu-12Al-8Ni alloy. The presence of oxygen peaks in the EDS analysis revealed that an oxidative type of wear is occurred for the Cu-12Al alloy samples with varying the wt.% of Ni content. The electrochemical corrosion analysis revealed that the rate of corrosion is higher for Cu-12Al alloy without Ni. However, the rate of corrosion is reduced by increasing the wt.% of Ni content from 2 to 8.
