Abstract:Three studies, involving a total of 145 observers examined quantitative theories of the overestimation of perceived optical slant. The first two studies investigated the depth/width anisotropies on positive and negative slant in both pitch and yaw at 2 and 8 m using calibrated immersive virtual environments. Observers made judgments of the relative lengths of extents that were frontal with those that were in depth. The physical aspect ratio that was perceived as 1:1 was determined for each slant. The observed anisotropies can be modeled by assuming overestimation in perceived slant. Three one-parameter slant perception models (angular expansion, affine depth compression caused by mis-scaling of binocular disparity, and intrinsic bias) were compared. The angular expansion and the affine depth compression models provided significantly better fits to the aspect ratio data than the intrinsic bias model did. The affine model required depth compression at the 2 m distance; however, that was much more than the depth compression measured directly in the third study using the same apparatus. The present results suggest that depth compression based on mis-scaling of binocular disparity may contribute to slant overestimation, especially as viewing distance increases, but also suggest that a functional rather than mechanistic account may be more appropriate for explaining biases in perceived slant in near space.
Can perceptual learning alleviate the global motion direction discrimination deficit in amblyopia

Abstract:Amblyopia causes a contrast sensitivity deficit in the amblyopic eye. However there is also evidence of additional deficits affecting functions further along the processing stream, e.g. an impairment in global motion processing that is not specific to the amblyopic eye. Perceptual learning studies on normal observers have demonstrated significant improvements in global motion tasks. On this basis, we have applied these methods in an attempt to: i) improve global motion processing in amblyopic observers, and ii) determine whether the learning effects are specific to the trained eye. We tested 5 normals and 6 amblyopes on a motion direction discrimination task. Our stimuli were a field of isotropic log-Gabors with peak spatial frequency of 3 c/deg (spatially band-pass "dots"). In each trial we first presented a stimulus with a fixed reference motion direction, and then a test stimulus with its motion direction defined as an offset from that reference. The observer responded whether the second interval's direction was clockwise or anti-clockwise relative to the first. The difficulty of the task was varied by modifying the offset angle. We measured monocular baseline thresholds for each eye (day 1), and then conducted 10 days of monocular training for 40 minutes/day (days 2-11). Half of the amblyopes trained with their amblyopic eye, half with their fellow eye. After training we then made two retest measurements for each eye (days 12 and 13). Surprisingly, we do not find the expected training effect in either our normal or our amblyopic observers. Thresholds were generally lower following training, however this difference is not statistically significant. It is possible that the critical difference between our study and those that have found large training effects is the spatially broadband nature of the stimuli used in previous studies. Why Do Things Seem Closer Than They Are?

Abstract:Systematic and stable biases in the visual appearance of locomotor space may reflect functional coding strategies for the sake of more precisely guiding motor actions. Perceptual matching tasks and verbal estimates suggest that there is a systematic underestimation of egocentric distance along the ground plane in extended environments. Whereas underestimation has previously been understood as a mere failure of proper verbal calibration, such an interpretation cannot account for perceptual matching results. Moreover, we have observed that the subjective geometry of distance perception on the ground plane is quantitatively consistent with the explicit overestimation of angular gaze declination which we have measured independently of perceived distance. We suggest that there is a locally-consistent expansion of specific angular variables in visual experience that is useful for action, and that this stable expansion may aid action by retaining more precise angular information, despite the information being mis-scaled approximately linearly. Actions are effective in this distorted perceived space by being calibrated to their perceived consequences (but notice that this means that measuring spatial action parameters, such as walked distance, are not directly informative about perceived distance). We distinguish our view from reports of small judgmental biases moderated by semantic, social and emotional factors on the one hand (which might or might not involve changes in visual appearance) and also from the prevailing implicit assumption that the perceptual variables guiding action must be accurate. The perceptual variables guiding action must be stable in order to support action calibration and precise to support precise action. We suggest that the systematic biases evident in the visual (and haptic) phenomenology of locomotor space may reflect a functional coding strategy that can render actions that are coded in the same perceived space more effective than if space were perceived veridically. Abstract:Two experiments are reported concerning the perception of ground extent to discover whether prior reports of anisotropy between frontal extents and extents in depth were consistent across different measures (visual matching and pantomime walking) and test environments (outdoor environments and virtual environments). In Experiment 1 it was found that depth extents of up to 7 m are indeed perceptually compressed relative to frontal extents in an outdoor environment, and that perceptual matching provided more precise estimates than did pantomime walking. In Experiment 2, similar anisotropies were found using similar tasks in a similar (but virtual) environment. In both experiments pantomime walking measures seemed to additionally compress the range of responses. Experiment 3 supported the hypothesis that range compression in walking measures of perceived distance might be due to proactive interference (memory contamination). It is concluded that walking measures are calibrated for perceived egocentric distance, but that pantomime walking measures may suffer range compression. Depth extents along the ground are perceptually compressed relative to frontal ground extents in a manner consistent with the angular scale expansion hypothesis.
Effects of Discrepant Optic Flow During Walking on the Perceived Visual and Proprioceptive Straight Ahead in Egocentric Space

Abstract:Previous research has shown that discrepant optic flow experienced during walking with prism glasses can shift both the visual and proprioceptive straight ahead (SA) in egocentric space. Here by having participants walk in an immersive virtual environment, we examined how adding optic flow information in the scene affected such shifts and whether such shifts increased with prolonged exposure to discrepant optic flow. Nineteen participants wore a head-mounted display (44°Hx34°V) and walked toward a red post target placed on a textured ground or a doorway on the back wall of a room. The target and the doorway were both at 8 m. The room display provided denser flow and motion parallax information than did the textured ground display. Participants' visual heading specified by optic flow was displaced by ±10° from their physical walking direction, causing discrepant optic flow. We measured participants' VSA and PSA before walking, after 10 trials, 20 trials, and 30 trials of walking, respectively. For VSA measurement, the experimenter moved a light spot on a wall and participants judged when it was at their SA. For the PSA measurement, participants were blindfolded and used a laser pointer to point at their SA. We found a significant shift in PSA for both the room and the textured ground displays. The shift in PSA was larger than that in VSA for both displays, and the shift in VSA was significant for the room (about 2°) but not the textured ground display. The shifts in both PSA and VSA increased with the number of trials tested for the room but not the textured ground display. We conclude that discrepant optic flow during walking recalibrates PSA in egocentric space more than VSA, and this recalibration increases with the exposure to discrepant optic flow when the display contains rich optic flow information. Continuous psychophysics shows millisecond-scale visual processing delays are faithfully preserved in movement dynamics

Abstract:Image differences between the eyes can cause interocular discrepancies in the speed of visual processing. Millisecond-scale differences in visual processing speed can cause dramatic misperceptions of the depth and 3D direction of moving objects. Here, we develop a monocular and binocular continuous target-tracking psychophysics paradigm that can quantify such tiny differences in visual processing speed. Human observers continuously tracked a target undergoing Brownian motion with a range of luminance levels in each eye. Suitable analyses recover the time-course of the visuomotor response in each condition, the dependence of visual processing speed on luminance level, and the temporal evolution of processing differences between the eyes. Importantly, using a direct within-observer comparison, we show that continuous target-tracking and traditional forced-choice psychophysical methods provide estimates of interocular delays that agree on average to within a fraction of a millisecond. Thus, visual processing delays are preserved in the movement dynamics of the hand. Finally, we show analytically, and partially confirm experimentally, that differences between the temporal impulse response functions in the two eyes predicts how lateral target motion causes misperceptions of motion-in-depth and associated tracking responses. Because continuous target-tracking can accurately recover millisecond-scale differences in visual processing speed and has multiple advantages over traditional psychophysics, it should facilitate the study of temporal processing in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Judging object speed during observer self-motion requires disambiguating retinal stimulation from two sources: self-motion and object motion. According to the Flow Parsing hypothesis, observers estimate their own motion, then subtract the retinal corresponding motion from the total retinal stimulation and interpret the remaining stimulation as pertaining to object motion. Subtracting noisier self-motion information from retinal input should lead to a decrease in precision. Furthermore, when self-motion is only simulated visually, self-motion is likely to be underestimated, yielding an overestimation of target speed when target and observer move in opposite directions and an underestimation when they move in the same direction. We tested this hypothesis with a two-alternative forced-choice task in which participants judged which of two motions, presented in an immersive 3D environment, was faster. One motion interval contained a ball cloud whose speed was selected dynamically according to a PEST staircase, while the other contained one big target travelling laterally at a fixed speed. While viewing the big target, participants were either static or experienced visually simulated lateral self-motion in the same or opposite direction of the target. Participants were not significantly biased in either motion profile, and precision was only significantly lower when participants moved visually in the direction opposite to the target. We conclude that, when immersed in an ecologically valid 3D environment with rich self-motion cues, participants perceive an object’s speed accurately at a small precision cost, even when self-motion is simulated only visually.

Abstract:Researchers especially beginning with (Rogers & Graham, 1982) have noticed important psychophysical and experimental similarities between the neurologically different motion parallax and stereopsis cues. Their quantitative analysis relied primarily on the "disparity equivalence" approximation. In this article we show that retinal motion from lateral translation satisfies a strong ("asymptotic") approximation to binocular disparity. This precise mathematical similarity is also practical in the sense that it applies at normal viewing distances. The approximation is an extension to peripheral vision of (Cormac & Fox's 1985) well-known non-trig central vision approximation for binocular disparity. We hope our simple algebraic formula will be useful in analyzing experiments outside central vision where less precise approximations have led to a number of quantitative errors in the vision literature.

Abstract:It is a well-established finding that more informative optic flow (e.g., faster, denser, or presented over a larger portion of the visual field) yields decreased variability in heading judgements. Current models of heading perception further predict faster processing under such circumstances, which has, however, not been supported empirically so far. In this study, we validate a novel continuous psychophysics paradigm by replicating the effect of the speed and density of optic flow on variability in performance, and we investigate how these manipulations affect the temporal dynamics. To this end, we tested 30 participants in a continuous psychophysics paradigm administered in Virtual Reality. We immersed them in a simple virtual environment where they experienced four 90-second blocks of optic flow where their linear heading direction (no simulated rotation) at any given moment was determined by a random walk. We asked them to continuously indicate with a joystick the direction in which they perceived themselves to be moving. In each of the four blocks they experienced a different combination of simulated self-motion speeds (SLOW and FAST) and density of optic flow (SPARSE and DENSE). Using a Cross-Correlogram Analysis, we determined that participants reacted faster and displayed lower variability in their performance in the FAST and DENSE conditions than in the SLOW and SPARSE conditions, respectively. Using a Kalman Filter-based analysis approach, we found a similar pattern, where the fitted perceptual noise parameters were higher for SLOW and SPARSE. While replicating previous results on variability, we show that more informative optic flow can speed up heading judgements, while at the same time validating a continuous psychophysics as an efficient method for studying heading perception.

Abstract:With a demand for an immersive experience in virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) displays, recent efforts have incorporated eye states, such as focus and fixation, into display graphics. Among these, ocular parallax, a small parallax generated by eye rotation, has received considerable attention for its impact on depth perception. However, the substantial latency of head-mounted displays (HMDs) has made it challenging to accurately assess its true effect during free eye movements. To address this issue, we propose a high-speed (360 Hz) and low-latency (4.8 ms) ocular parallax rendering system with a custom-built eye tracker. Using this proposed system, we conducted an investigation to determine the latency requirements necessary for achieving perceptually stable ocular parallax rendering. Our findings indicate that, in binocular viewing, ocular parallax rendering is perceived as significantly less stable than conventional rendering when the latency exceeds 43.72 ms at 1.3 D and 21.50 ms at 2.0 D. We also evaluated the effects of ocular parallax rendering on binocular fusion and monocular depth perception under free viewing conditions. The results demonstrated that ocular parallax rendering can enhance binocular fusion but has a limited impact on depth perception under monocular viewing conditions when latency is minimized.

Abstract:Purpose The current study was to investigate whether myopia affected peripheral motion detection and whether the potential effect interacted with spatial frequency, motion speed, or eccentricity. Methods Seventeen young adults aged 22–26 years participated in the study. They were six low to medium myopes [spherical equivalent refractions −1.0 to −5.0 D (diopter)], five high myopes (<-5.5 D) and six emmetropes (+0.5 to −0.5 D). All myopes were corrected by self-prepared, habitual soft contact lenses. A four-alternative forced-choice task in which the subject was to determine the location of the phase-shifting Gabor from the four quadrants (superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal) of the visual field, was employed. The experiment was blocked by eccentricity (20° and 27°), spatial frequency (0.6, 1.2, 2.4, and 4.0 cycles per degree (c/d) for 20° eccentricity, and 0.6, 1.2, 2.0, and 3.2 c/d for 27° eccentricity), as well as the motion speed [2 and 6 degree per second (d/s)]. Results Mixed-model analysis of variances showed no significant difference in the thresholds of peripheral motion detection between three refractive groups at either 20° ( F [2,14] = 0.145, p = 0.866) or 27° ( F [2,14] = 0.475, p = 0.632). At 20°, lower motion detection thresholds were associated with higher myopia ( p < 0.05) mostly for low spatial frequency and high-speed targets in the nasal and superior quadrants, and for high spatial frequency and high-speed targets in the temporal quadrant in myopic viewers. Whereas at 27°, no significant correlation was found between the spherical equivalent and the peripheral motion detection threshold under all conditions (all p > 0.1). Spatial frequency, speed, and quadrant of the visual field all showed significant effect on the peripheral motion detection threshold. Conclusion There was no significant difference between the three refractive groups in peripheral motion detection. However, lower motion detection thresholds were associated with higher myopia, mostly for low spatial frequency targets, at 20° in myopic viewers.

Abstract:Leading causes of irreversible blindness such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma can, respectively, lead to central or peripheral vision loss. The ability of sufferers to process visual motion information can be impacted even during early stages of eye disease. We used head-mounted display virtual reality as a tool to better understand how vision changes caused by eye diseases directly affect the processing of visual information critical for self-motion perception.Participants with intermediate AMD or early manifest glaucoma with near-normal visual acuities and visual fields were recruited for this study. We examined their experiences of self-motion in depth (linear vection), spatial presence, and cybersickness when viewing radially expanding patterns of optic flow simulating different speeds of self-motion in depth. Viewing was performed with the head stationary (passive condition) or while making lateral-sway head movements (active conditions).Participants with AMD (i.e., central visual field loss) were found to have greater vection strength and spatial presence, compared to participants with normal visual fields. However, participants with glaucoma (i.e., peripheral visual field loss) were found to have lower vection strength and spatial presence, compared to participants with normal visual fields. Both AMD and glaucoma groups reported reduced severity in cybersickness compared to healthy normals.These findings strongly support the view that perceived self-motion is differentially influenced by peripheral versus central vision loss, and that patients with different visual field defects are oppositely biased when processing visual cues to self-motion perception.

Abstract:This research investigated how the similarity of the rendering parameters of background and foreground objects affected egocentric depth perception in indoor virtual and augmented environments. We refer to the similarity of the rendering parameters as visual 'congruence'. Study participants manipulated the depth of a sphere to match the depth of a designated target peg. In the first experiment, the sphere and peg were both virtual, while in the second experiment, the sphere is virtual and the peg is real. In both experiments, depth perception accuracy was found to depend on the levels of realism and congruence between the sphere, pegs, and background. In Experiment 1, realistic backgrounds lead to overestimation of depth, but resulted in underestimation when the background was virtual, and when depth cues were applied to the sphere and target peg. In Experiment 2, background and target pegs were real but matched with the virtual sphere; in comparison to Experiment 1, realistically rendered targets prompted an underestimation and more accuracy with the manipulated object. These findings suggest that congruence can affect distance estimation and the underestimation effect in the AR environment resulted from increased graphical fidelity of the foreground target and background.

Abstract:The presence of pictorial depth cues in virtual environments is important for minimising distortions driven by unnatural viewing conditions (e.g., vergence-accommodation conflict). Our aim was to determine how different pictorial depth cues affect size constancy in virtual environments under binocular and monocular viewing conditions. We systematically removed linear perspective cues and textures of a hallway in a virtual environment. The experiment was performed using the method of constant stimuli. The task required participants to compare the size of 'far' (10 m) and 'near' (5 m) circles displayed inside a virtual environment with one or both or none of the pictorial depth cues. Participants performed the experiment under binocular and monocular viewing conditions while wearing a virtual reality headset. ANOVA revealed that size constancy was greater for both the far and the near circles in the virtual environment with pictorial depth cues compared to the one without cues. However, the effect of linear perspective cues was stronger than textures, especially for the far circle. We found no difference between the binocular and monocular viewing conditions across the different virtual environments. We conclude that linear perspective cues exert a stronger effect than textures on the perceptual rescaling of far stimuli placed in the virtual environment, and that this effect does not vary between binocular and monocular viewing conditions.

Would Gaze-Contingent Rendering Improve Depth Perception in Virtual and Augmented Reality?

Abstract:Near distances are overestimated in virtual reality, and far distances are underestimated, but an explanation for these distortions remains elusive. One potential concern is that whilst the eye rotates to look at the virtual scene, the virtual cameras remain static. Could using eye-tracking to change the perspective of the virtual cameras as the eye rotates improve depth perception in virtual reality? This paper identifies 14 distinct perspective distortions that could in theory occur from keeping the virtual cameras fixed whilst the eye rotates in the context of near-eye displays. However, the impact of eye movements on the displayed image depends on the optical, rather than physical, distance of the display. Since the optical distance of most head-mounted displays is over 1m, most of these distortions will have only a negligible effect. The exception are 'gaze-contingent disparities', which will leave near virtual objects looking displaced from physical objects that are meant to be at the same distance in augmented reality.

Abstract:The Sunday Telegraph (31 July 1988) featured an article about a surgical team at a London teaching hospital. The article bore the characteristics of what is known as the ‘human interest angle’ and focused on, for example, the surgeon’s penchant for fast cars and jewellery rather than anything of more medical relevance. This would not, I suspect, encourage the reader to develop great confidence in his or her medical attendants. Certainly the piece did not call to mind the phrase ‘centre of excellence’ to describe the featured hospital. My main concern, however, was the portrayed attitude and behaviour of the (named) consultant anaesthetist, who was quoted repeating the old cliche about anaesthesia being 90% boredom and 10% panic, together with the equally banal comparison between anaesthesia and the flying of an aeroplane. It is the accompanying large colour photograph of him engrossed in his newspaper during an operation which can hardly improve public perception of our specialty and its professionalism. This, I suggest, brings the profession in general and anaesthesia in particular into disrepute, which is something we hardly need in the current climate of escalating malpractice claims and increasing public scrutiny of consultant’s professional behaviour. To quote Professor Rosen, President of the Association, as published in Anaesthesia (1988; 43: 721) ‘. . . Reading or listening to tapes during the conduct of anaesthesia distracts the anaesthetist’s attention . . . If an anaesthetist’s regular attitude to work is that it is boring, then counselling is indicated.’
Space perception of strabismic observers in the real world environment

Abstract:Purpose: Space perception beyond the near distance range (>2 m) is important for target localization, and for directing and guiding a variety of daily activities, including driving and walking. However, it is unclear whether the absolute (egocentric) localization of a single target in the intermediate distance range requires binocular vision, and if so, whether having subnormal stereopsis in strabismus impairs one's ability to localize the target. Methods: We investigated this by measuring the perceived absolute location of a target by observers with normal binocular vision (n = 8; mean age, 24.5 years) and observers with strabismus (n = 8; mean age, 24.9 years) under monocular and binocular conditions. The observers used the blind walking-gesturing task to indicate the judged location of a target located at various viewing distances (2.73-6.93 m) and heights (0, 30, and 90 cm) above the floor. Near stereopsis was assessed with the Randot Stereotest. Results: Both groups of observers accurately judged the absolute distance of the target on the ground (height = 0 cm) either with monocular or binocular viewing. However, when the target was suspended in midair, the normal observers accurately judged target location with binocular viewing, but not with monocular viewing (mean slant angle, 0.8° ± 0.5° vs. 7.4° ± 1.4°; P < 0.001, with a slant angle of 0° representing accurate localization). In contrast, the strabismic observers with poorer stereo acuity made larger errors in target localization in both viewing conditions, though with fewer errors during binocular viewing (mean slant angle, 2.7° ± 0.4° vs. 9.2° ± 1.3°; P < 0.0025). Further analysis reveals the localization error, that is, slant angle, correlates positively with stereo threshold during binocular viewing (r(2) = 0.479, P < 0.005), but not during monocular viewing (r(2) = 0.0002, P = 0.963). Conclusions: Locating a single target on the ground is sufficient with monocular depth information, but binocular depth information is required when the target is suspended in midair. Since the absolute binocular disparity information of the single target is weak beyond 2 m, we suggest the visual system localizes the single target using the relative binocular disparity information between the midair target and the visible ground surface. Consequently, strabismic observers with residual stereopsis localize a target more accurately than their counterparts without stereo ability.

Abstract:Stereopsis plays an important role in depth perception; if so, disparity-defined depth should not vary with distance. However, studies of stereoscopic depth constancy often report systematic distortions in depth judgments over distance, particularly for virtual stimuli. Our aim was to understand how depth estimation is impacted by viewing distance and display-based cue conflicts by replicating physical objects in virtual counterparts. To this end, we measured perceived depth using virtual textured half-cylinders and identical three-dimensional (3D) printed versions at two viewing distances under monocular and binocular conditions. Virtual stimuli were viewed using a mirror stereoscope and an Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), while physical stimuli were viewed in a controlled test environment. Depth judgments were similar in both virtual apparatuses, which suggests that variations in the viewing geometry and optics of the HMD have little impact on perceived depth. When viewing physical stimuli binocularly, judgments were accurate and exhibited stereoscopic depth constancy. However, in all cases, depth was underestimated for virtual stimuli and failed to achieve depth constancy. It is clear that depth constancy is only complete for cue-rich physical stimuli and that the failure of constancy in virtual stimuli is due to the presence of the vergence-accommodation conflict. Further, our post hoc analysis revealed that prior experience with virtual and physical environments had a strong effect on depth judgments. That is, performance in virtual environments was enhanced by limited exposure to a related task using physical objects.

Abstract:Recognition acuity-the minimum size of a high-contrast object that allows us to recognize it-is limited by optical and neural elements of the eye and by processing within the visual cortex. The perceived size of objects can be changed by motion-adaptation. Viewing receding or looming motion makes subsequently viewed stimuli appear to grow or shrink, respectively. It has been reported that resulting changes in perceived size impact recognition acuity. We set out to determine if such acuity changes are reliable and what drives this phenomenon. We measured the effect of adaptation to receding and looming motion on acuity for crowded tumbling-T stimuli (). We quantified the role of crowding, individuals' susceptibility to motion-adaptation, and potentially confounding effects of pupil size and eye movements. Adaptation to receding motion made targets appear larger and improved acuity (-0.037 logMAR). Although adaptation to looming motion made targets appear smaller, it induced not the expected decrease in acuity but a modest acuity improvement (-0.018 logMAR). Further, each observer's magnitude of acuity change was not correlated with their individual perceived-size change following adaptation. Finally, we found no evidence that adaptation-induced acuity gains were related to crowding, fixation stability, or pupil size. Adaptation to motion modestly enhances visual acuity, but unintuitively, this is dissociated from perceived size. Ruling out fixation and pupillary behavior, we suggest that motion adaptation may improve acuity via incidental effects on sensitivity-akin to those arising from blur adaptation-which shift sensitivity to higher spatial frequency-tuned channels.
