Abstract:Superb strong and tough stretchable conductive organo‐hydrogels are prepared by a novel freeze‐casting assisted solution substitution strategy. This strategy endows the organo‐hydrogels with synergistic strengthening and toughening mechanisms across multiple length scales over their exquisite hierarchical structures. The organo‐hydrogels are demonstrated as promising materials for soft electronics with remarkable multi‐functionality, including strain sensitivity, thermo‐healability, freezing tolerance, and recoverability. High strength, toughness, and conductivity are among the most sought‐after properties of flexible electronics. However, existing engineering materials find it difficult to achieve both excellent mechanical properties and high conductivity. To address this challenge, this study proposes a facile yet versatile strategy for preparing super‐tough conductive organo‐hydrogels via freeze‐casting assisted solution substitution (FASS). This FASS strategy enables the formation of organo‐hydrogels in one step with exquisite hierarchical anisotropic structures coupled with synergistic strengthening and toughening effects across multiple length scales. As an exemplary material, the prepared polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) organo‐hydrogel with solvent content up to 87 wt% exhibits a combination of high strength (6.5 MPa), high stretchability (1710% in strain), ultra‐high toughness (58.9 MJ m−3), as well as high ionic conductivity up to 6.5 S m−1 with excellent strain sensitivity. The exceptional combination of mechanical properties and conductivity makes the PVA organo‐hydrogel a promising flexible electronics material. In addition, the FASS strategy can also endow hydrogels with multi‐functions, including thermo‐healability, freezing tolerance and shape recoverability, and can be applied to various hydrogel materials, such as carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginate, and chitosan. Hence, this work provides an all‐around solution for preparing advanced strong and tough conductive soft materials for a multitude of applications.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have a remarkable potential for applications in soft electronics and robotics, owing to their noteworthy attributes, including electrical conductivity, stretchability, biocompatibility, etc. However, the limited strength and toughness of these hydrogels have traditionally impeded their practical implementation. Inspired by the hierarchical architecture of high-performance biological composites found in nature, we successfully fabricate a robust and sensitive conductive nanocomposite hydrogel through self-assembly–induced bridge cross-linking of MgB 2 nanosheets and polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels. By combining the hierarchical lamellar microstructure with robust molecular B─O─C covalent bonds, the resulting conductive hydrogel exhibits an exceptional strength and toughness. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrates exceptional sensitivity (response/relaxation time, 20 milliseconds; detection lower limit, ~1 Pascal) under external deformation. Such characteristics enable the conductive hydrogel to exhibit superior performance in soft sensing applications. This study introduces a high-performance conductive hydrogel and opens up exciting possibilities for the development of soft electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have shown great prospects as wearable flexible sensors. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to construct hydrogel-based sensor with great mechanical strength and high strain sensitivity. Herein, an ion-conducting hydrogel was fabricated by introducing gelatin-dialdehyde β-cyclodextrin (Gel-DACD) into polyvinyl alcohol-borax (PVA-borax) hydrogel network. Natural Gel-DACD network acted as mechanical deformation force through non-covalent cross-linking to endow the polyvinyl alcohol-borax/gelatin-dialdehyde β-cyclodextrin hydrogel (PGBCDH) with excellent mechanical stress (1.35 MPa), stretchability (400%), toughness (1.84 MJ/m3) and great fatigue resistance (200% strain for 100 cycles). Surprisingly, PGBCDH displayed good conductivity of 0.31 S/m after adding DACD to hydrogel network. As sensor, it showed rapid response (168 ms), high strain sensitivity (gage factor (GF) = 8.57 in the strain range of 200%-250%) and reliable sensing stability (100% strain for 200 cycles). Importantly, PGBCDH-based sensor can accurately monitor complex body movements (knee, elbow, wrist and finger joints) and large-scale subtle movements (speech, swallow, breath and facial expressions). Thus, PGBCDH shows great potential for human monitoring with high precision.

Abstract:A facile yet simple method to fabricate strong polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based hydrogels with supramolecular polymer networks (SPNs) is developed and used as sensitive sensors in a variety of moderate and extreme environments. The hydrogels reach ultimate stresses of 9.64 ± 0.5 MPa and also have great freeze and heat resistance properties, chemical stability, and reprocessability. Supramolecular polymer hydrogels, exhibiting wide applications in flexible sensing, wearable electronics, artificial skin, etc., often require complex molecule and component design to adapt extreme environments. Most supramolecular polymer hydrogels currently, however, are unable to satisfy the harsh demands ascribed to their poor mechanical properties and chemical stability. Herein, this study demonstrates a novel strategy to fabricate superstrong polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels with densely supramolecular polymer networks (SPNs) and complexation, induced by simple deprotonation and reconfiguration of ion clusters (ICs). Such strategy enables the PVA hydrogels with high strength (9.64 ± 0.5 MPa), compressibility, and recoverability (load objects over ≈10000 times more than its weight), resistance to various solvents, freezing tolerance (keep flexible and conductive even at −50 °C) and many other performances. Notably, the properties of resultant hydrogels surpass majority reported, tackling a long‐standing dilemma both mechanical properties and stability for PVA hydrogels. A proof‐of‐concept spider robot is assembled by 3D printed model, which achieves successfully signal acquisition in different extreme conditions. In this study the multifunctional PVA hydrogels are envisioned as a simple and universal strategy for sensors in various conditions, which is significant for the exploration in extreme environments that are not easily accessible to humans, such as the North and South Poles and solvent leakage area.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors based on double network conductive hydrogels have attracted much attention due to their great potential for human motion health and smart detection. However, the development of conductive hydrogels with high sensitivity and anti-freezing properties for a wide range of use environments is still a challenge. Herein, a novel organohydrogel-based PVA-P-TA-MWCNTs (PPTME) double network capable of pressure and strain sensing was reported with high ambient stability, excellent anti-freezing capability, smart reparability and superior sensitivity. The multiple interactions within the PPTME organohydrogel have been substantiated through Density Functional Theory (DFT) analysis. The organohydrogel utilizing strong hydrogel bonds, crystalline microphases, and chain entanglement of PTA/PVA exhibited good mechanical properties (374%) and excellent cycling performance. Meanwhile, owing to the addition of H2O/EG (ethylene glycol) binary solvent, this organohydrogel exhibited long-term water retention (15 days), anti-freezing properties (−61.9 °C), greatly improving the applications at low temperatures. Furthermore, the assembled pressure sensors showed ultrahigh sensitivity (1.88 kPa−1) in wide detection range (0–266.2 kPa). Based on these excellent properties, a flexible organohydrogel sensor was prepared, demonstrating its enormous potential in the field of human motor behavior detection and wearable.

Abstract:As a three-dimensional cross-linked network polymer with electrical conductivity, the ionic conductive hydrogel has enormous application potential in electronic devices, bionic skin, sensors, and other regions. However, due to the limitations of poor mechanical properties and single functionality, conductive hydrogels are difficult to fully meet the application requirements. In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tannic acid (TA) were used as raw materials, DMSO/H2O binary solvent system was selected, and NaCl was introduced to construct an ionic organohydrogel with high strength, high toughness, stretchability, frost resistance and ionic conductivity. To demonstrate the application, PVA-TA organohydrogel was used as a wire to light up the LED in circuit and can be used as a touch screen pen for electronic screen painting. Besides, PVA-TA organohydrogel had high sensitivity to both tensile deformation and compression deformation. So it can monitor the movement of the hand and provide a path for flexible mechanical sensors. This new organohydrogel has considerable application prospects in the fields of antifreeze materials and multifunctional sensors.

Abstract:Although conductive and elastic materials are increasingly required for strain or stress sensing application in wearable electronic devices, it remains a great challenge to achieve outstanding and balanced mechanical performance while retaining high conductivity. Herein, the development of an ionic/electronic conductive hydrogel with mechanically robustness for strain sensors is reported. A covalently cross-linked polymer network is highly enhanced by a synergy of nano-enhancement (cellulose nanofibrils) and dynamic interactions containing hydrogen bonding and ionic coordination, which is used to support the mechanical structure of the hydrogel. By decorating with polypyrrole molecules via Fe 3+ induced in-situ polymerization, the integrity of network structure is further improved by constructing physical interactions and chain entanglement. Therefore, compared to virgin poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogel, the obtained hydrogel exhibits prominent mechanical performance containing high tensile strength (2.54 MPa) and ultra-high toughness (17.71 MJ m −3 ) along with remarkable stretchability (925%). Apart from Establishing a fair balance among mechanical parameters, a hybrid conductive path composed of ionic and electronic mechanism is also constructed simultaneously that results in an improved conductivity (995 mS m −1 ), wide working range (≈873%) and high sensitivity (maximum gauge factor: 25.6). Thus, the combination of outstanding mechanical performance and sensitive strain response makes the conductive hydrogel prepared herein apply for mechanically reliable and flexible strain sensor that can monitor diverse mechanical deformation (e.g., human joint movement) reflected by real-time resistance variation. Clearly, this work provides a new perspective for the design and fabrication of advanced gel-based materials aiming at high performance in human motion detection.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have received great attention owing to their promising applications in electrodes, supercapacitors, actuators, fuel cells, biosensors and biomedical devices and so on. However, it is still a challenge to achieve conductive hydrogels with integrated high performances, including high strength, large stretchability, high toughness, rapid self-recovery and good self-healing. In the present work, multiple physically cross-linked conductive hydrogels with integrated high performances were fabricated by in situ doping conductive PEDOT:PSS during the formation of dual physically cross-linked poly(N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide)/Laponite hydrogels. At the optimal condition, the conductive gels exhibit high tensile strength, high extensibility, high tearing energy, rapid self-recovery property without any external stimuli, high conductivity, good self-healing property, as well as sensitive strain sensing for monitoring human activities (e.g. the movements of the finger and wrist, and tiny breathing movements). Considering easy preparation and integrated high performances, our conductive gels have potential applications in wearable electronic sensors and bioelectronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels that are highly elastic, fatigue resistant and environmentally adaptive are promising materials in the fields of wearable electronics, bioelectronics and soft robotics. However, these materials are challenging to develop, especially for use in harsh environments including organic solvents and extreme temperatures. Here we report a simple method for the fabrication of highly compressible and fatigue-resistant conductive hydrogels with reinforced-concrete-type constituents and high-tortuosity interconnected cellular architecture through a self-assembly and two-stage in situ polymerization process. The obtained composites exhibit excellent mechanical compressibility with negligible residual strain at 50% strain for >10(4) cyclic loadings both in air and water. Due to the structure-favoured anisotropic response to tensile deformations coupled with elastic recovery, the hydrogel is endowed with sensing dimensions which allow the direction and velocity of movement on the sensor surface to be distinguished. In addition, by interpenetrating with an oleophilic polymer network, highly elastic and adaptive organohydrogels are developed with outstanding sensing performance in a wide variety of organic solvents and cryogenic temperatures. These materials may therefore be suitable for use in flexible and wearable devices in harsh environments.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogel flexible sensors have attracted widespread attention in the field of wearable electronic devices, which typically possess the properties of stretch resistance, moisture retention, antifreeze, adhesion, and self-healing. Herein, a silk nanofiber–tannic acid (SNF@TA) is successfully introduced into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel to prepare a rigid and adhesive PVA–SNF@TA organohydrogel, exhibiting good mechanical strength (up to 365 kPa) and excellent self-healing properties. Due to the presence of conductive ions and ethylene glycol, the PVA–SNF@TA organohydrogel presents high sensitivity and cold resistance (− 18 °C). Moreover, the PVA–SNF@TA organohydrogel maintains a good transparency of 91% and ultraviolet filtration capacity. A strain sensor made of PVA–SNF@TA organohydrogel has good adhesion and accurate sensing signals. Generally, the designed sensor can significantly monitor small deformations, such as frowning, blinking, smiling, and swallowing motions, showing an impressive sensitivity (gauge factor 1.094) and stable (1000 stretching cycles) variable sensing characteristics. More specifically, a pressure sensor consisted of a PVA–SNF@TA organohydrogel cylinder keeps good sensing stability, thereby desirably detecting different large movements of the human body (finger pressing, walking and running). Our work can offer a broad avenue for the advanced architecture of functional hydrogel materials, which has great potential in the field of human exercise and health monitoring.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels as promising material candidates for soft electronics have been rapidly developed in recent years. However, the low ionic conductivity, limited mechanical properties, and insufficient freeze-resistance greatly limit their applications for flexible and wearable electronics. Herein, aramid nanofiber (ANF)-reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) organohydrogels containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/H2 O mixed solvents with outstanding freeze-resistance are fabricated through solution casting and 3D printing methods. The organohydrogels show both high tensile strength and toughness due to the synergistic effect of ANFs and DMSO in the system, which promotes PVA crystallization and intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between PVA molecules as well as ANFs and PVA, confirmed by a suite of characterization and molecular dynamics simulations. The organohydrogels also exhibit ultrahigh ionic conductivity, ranging from 1.1 to 34.3 S m-1 at -50 to 60 °C. Building on these excellent material properties, the organohydrogel-based strain sensors and solid-state zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are fabricated, which have a broad working temperature range. Particularly, the ZABs not only exhibit high specific capacity (262 mAh g-1 ) with ultra-long cycling life (355 cycles, 118 h) even at -30 °C, but also can work properly under various deformation states, manifesting their great potential applications in soft robotics and wearable electronics.

Abstract:Social monogamy has traditionally been suggested to be maintained because of weak sexual selection on male partner acquisition. However, the ubiquitous incidence of extra‐pair paternity suggests that sexual selection can be strong in monogamous systems, although studies partitioning variance in male reproductive success have come to mixed conclusions. Here, we use detailed field data to examine variance in male reproductive success and its implications for the maintenance of sociality in a population of the socially monogamous lizard Egernia whitii. We show that both within‐pair and, to a lesser extent, extra‐pair partner acquisition contribute to the variance in male reproductive success, resulting in considerable opportunity for sexual selection. Despite this, levels of multiple mating are lower in Egernia compared to other reptiles, suggesting that male partner acquisition is constrained. We suggest that this constraint may be a result of strong territoriality combined with sexual conflict over multiple mating generated by costs of extra‐pair paternity to females as a result of facultative male care. This has the potential to limit sexual selection by reducing variance in male reproductive success and therefore contribute to the maintenance of complex social organization.

Abstract:Recently, conductive hydrogels have gained great attention in intelligent wearable devices, but the simultaneous realization of stretchability, transparency, anti-freezing, self-healing, and adhesion properties by an easy method are still a big challenge. Herein, a novel multifunctional organohydrogel based on noncovalent intermolecular interactions was developed by simply polymerization hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA) in LiCl cryoprotectant/water (Cryo/water) solution via one-pot photo-polymerization method. Hydrogen bonding interactions of PHEAA-PHEAA and PHEAA-Cryo were the main driving force for gel formation. The LiCl and cryoprotectant gave PHEAA-Cryo-LiCl organohydrogel good conductivity and anti-freezing properties, respectively. The effects of the gel composition on the mechanical, transparency, anti-freezing, and conductivity properties of PHEAA-Cryo-LiCl organohydrogels were researched in detail. Moreover, poly(hydroxyethyl acrylamide)-glycerin-lithium chloride (PHEAA-Gl-LiCl) organohydrogel displayed good self-healing and adhesion properties owing to the reversible hydrogen bonding. Based on PHEAA-Gl-LiCl organohydrogel, a strain sensor was prepared for detecting human movements within a wide temperature range (−40 °C–25 °C), and the result showed various human motions could be detected stably, including joint movement, making a fist, swallowing or pronouncing, suggesting the potential applications for the next generation of intelligent wearable sensors.

Abstract:It is particularly challenging to prepare hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties that are comparable to those of strong biological tissues such as ligaments and tendons. Here, we present a facile method to fabricate tough and multifunctional hydrogels by freeze-thawing the self-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite prepared from acetal hydrolysis of commercial polyvinyl formal (PVFM) fabric. The resultant hydrogels exhibit simultaneously high tensile strength (18.5 MPa), toughness (14.7 ± 2.9 MJ/m 3 ), tearing resistance (35 N/mm), flexibility and excellent environment adaptability without compromising transparency. In addition, this hydrogel has good ionic conductivity, which can be applied to strain sensors and touch screens, and with proper design, it is successfully applied in flexible actuators. These results indicate this hydrogel has great potential for applications in different fields such as smart wearable devices and bionic actuators. The preparation method proposed in this paper is simple and controllable, and the material properties can be customized to meet specific needs, opening up possibilities for large-scale production of hydogels.

Abstract:Soft polymer gels encounter difficulties in meeting the demanding requirements of real-life applications due to the long-standing challenge to reproduce the excellent mechanical properties and multifunctionalities observed in natural soft tissues. Here, a skin-like hierarchically structured organo-hydrogel with an all-around performance that matches and outperforms mammalian skin is reported, including high stretchability of 2227% strain, remarkable strength of 20.78 MPa, record-breaking fracture toughness up to 260 MJ/m 3 , together with excellent resistance to fracture and fatigue (fatigue threshold over 30.4 kJ/m 2 ), superior long-term stability and tolerance to freezing and elevated temperatures. It also shows high conductivity and excellent electrical sensing capability. The underlying synergistic multi-scale reinforcement mechanisms of the organo-hydrogel are also validated via molecular dynamics simulations and experimental results. Hence, this work formulates a model design applicable to various polymer gels to expand their potential in applications including flexible electronics, multi-functional bionic sensors, energy storage devices and soft robotics.

Abstract:The conductive hydrogels always suffered from high internal friction, large hysteresis, and low capability of accurately predicting physical deformation, which seriously restricted their application in smart wearable devices. To address these problems, solvent molecules are directionally inserted into the polymer molecule chains via bridge effect to effectively reduce the molecular internal friction. Moreover, swelling is also combined to eliminate the temporary entanglements in the hydrogel system. The cooperation between the bridge and swollen effect endows the prepared polyacrylamide (PAM)/laponite/H3BO3/ethylene glycol (Eg) organohydrogel (PLBOH) ultralow hysteresis (1.38%, ε = 100%), ultrafast response (≈10 ms), and high linearity in the whole‐strain‐range (R2 = 0.996) with a great sensitivity (GF = 2.68 at the strain range of 0–750%). Meanwhile, the prepared PL10B30OH exhibits long‐term stability, excellent stretchability, and low dissipated energy. Furthermore, the assembled triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) displays an outstanding energy harvesting performance with an output voltage of 200 V with the size of 20 mm × 20 mm. The assembled strain sensors can monitor the small strain of facial expressions and large strain of human movements, indicating the tremendous applications in self‐powered intelligent and flexible wearable electronics under harsh environmental conditions. An innovative method is developed to prepare the hydrogel via bridge effect to directionally insert solvent molecules into the hydrogel, which effectively acts as lubricate to reduce the molecular internal friction. The developed hydrogel exhibits ultralow‐hysteresis, ultrafast‐response, and whole‐strain‐range linearity contributed by the special molecular structure, which also holds great potential in flexible wearable devices.

Abstract:Abstract High conductivity, large mechanical strength, and elongation are important parameters for soft electronic applications. However, it is difficult to find a material with balanced electronic and mechanical performance. Here, a simple method is developed to introduce ion‐rich pores into strong hydrogel matrix and fabricate a novel ionic conductive hydrogel with a high level of electronic and mechanical properties. The proposed ionic conductive hydrogel is achieved by physically cross‐linking the tough biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel as the matrix and embedding hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) biopolymer fibers inside matrix followed by salt solution soaking. The wrinkle and dense structure induced by salting in PVA matrix provides large stress (1.3 MPa) and strain (975%). The well‐distributed porous structure as well as ion migration–facilitated ion‐rich environment generated by embedded HPC fibers dramatically enhances ionic conductivity (up to 3.4 S m −1 , at f = 1 MHz). The conductive hybrid hydrogel can work as an artificial nerve in a 3D printed robotic hand, allowing passing of stable and tunable electrical signals and full recovery under robotic hand finger movements. This natural rubber‐like ionic conductive hydrogel has a promising application in artificial flexible electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels feature the flexibility of soft materials plus conductive properties providing functionality for effectively sticking to the epidermis and detecting human activity signals. Their stable electrical conductivity also effectively avoids the problem of uneven distribution of solid conductive fillers inside traditional conductive hydrogels. However, the simultaneous integration of high mechanical strength, stretchability, and transparency through a simple and green fabrication method remains a great challenge. Herein, a polymerizable deep eutectic solvent (PDES) composed of choline chloride and acrylic acid was added to a biocompatible PVA matrix. The double-network hydrogels were then simply prepared by thermal polymerization and one freeze-thaw method. The introduction of the PDES significantly improved the tensile properties (1.1 MPa), ionic conductivity (2.1 S/m), and optical transparency (90%) of the PVA hydrogels. When the gel sensor was fixed to human skin, real-time monitoring of a variety of human activities could be implemented with accuracy and durability. Such a simple preparation method performed by combining a deep eutectic solvent with traditional hydrogels offers a new avenue to construct multifunctional conductive hydrogel sensors with excellent performance.
