Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have a remarkable potential for applications in soft electronics and robotics, owing to their noteworthy attributes, including electrical conductivity, stretchability, biocompatibility, etc. However, the limited strength and toughness of these hydrogels have traditionally impeded their practical implementation. Inspired by the hierarchical architecture of high-performance biological composites found in nature, we successfully fabricate a robust and sensitive conductive nanocomposite hydrogel through self-assembly–induced bridge cross-linking of MgB 2 nanosheets and polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels. By combining the hierarchical lamellar microstructure with robust molecular B─O─C covalent bonds, the resulting conductive hydrogel exhibits an exceptional strength and toughness. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrates exceptional sensitivity (response/relaxation time, 20 milliseconds; detection lower limit, ~1 Pascal) under external deformation. Such characteristics enable the conductive hydrogel to exhibit superior performance in soft sensing applications. This study introduces a high-performance conductive hydrogel and opens up exciting possibilities for the development of soft electronics.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on improving the mechanical strength and toughness of conductive hydrogels while maintaining their high sensitivity. Traditional conductive hydrogels are limited in practical applications due to their limited mechanical properties (for example, the strength is less than 1 MPa). To overcome this obstacle, inspired by the hierarchical structures of high - performance biocomposites in nature, the research team has successfully prepared a conductive nanocomposite hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties and high sensitivity through the self - assembly - induced bridging cross - linking method. Specifically, this research aims to: 1. **Improve the mechanical properties of conductive hydrogels**: By introducing the self - assembly of MgB₂ nanosheets and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels, a conductive nanocomposite hydrogel with a hierarchical microstructure is formed to enhance its mechanical strength and toughness. 2. **Maintain or improve the sensitivity of conductive hydrogels**: Ensure that the prepared hydrogel can still exhibit extremely high sensitivity (response/relaxation time of 20 milliseconds, and the detection limit is about 1 Pascal) under external deformation. 3. **Expand the application range of conductive hydrogels**: Through the above improvements, this conductive hydrogel shows more extensive application potential in fields such as soft electronics, sensing, and robotics. In conclusion, through innovative material design and preparation methods, this paper has solved the deficiencies of traditional conductive hydrogels in terms of mechanical properties and sensitivity, providing new ideas for the development of high - performance soft electronic materials.
