Abstract:Background: The footwear manufacturing industry is one of the significant sectors of leather businesses in India. In the Indian footwear production industry, there is an enormous potential for employment, export, and development. Kolhapuri footwear is a popular handmade craft in India. It is a well-designed craft used by Indian people for many years. Artisans using traditional tools manufacture this footwear manually. Workers of this craft use traditional methods and work in cottage-based enterprises where organized laws and legislations are not applicable. Therefore, any occupational hazard-related documentation is not available. Due to the nature of the job, workers occupy various apparent non-optimal postures that may cause multiple work-related disorders such as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Objective: The main objective was to study and assess different footwear manufacturing workstations and working postures. The work further aimed to improve the design of current workstations and evaluate the proposed design using virtual ergonomic assessment techniques. Methods: An anthropometric database for the Kolhapuri footwear making population was developed. This work measured 35 different body dimensions of the footwear manufacturing artisans. Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) was used for postural analysis of the artisans. Results: It was observed that the entire footwear making activity was carried out in awkward postures. RULA scores suggested that 'a change in posture' to improve the efficiency of artisans was required for most of the workstations. This work proposed a novel workstation design to reduce the high risk of MSDs. The design was evaluated for thigh clearance, vision analysis and RULA analysis with the help of Digital Human Modelling (DHM). The virtual ergonomics assessment of this design revealed that the vision, thigh clearances, and RULA scores were satisfactory in the new design. Conclusion: The anthropometric database proposed in this study is likely to be useful in designing Kolhapuri footwear manufacturing tools. The proposed workstation and work layout are helpful to improve the accessibility of required tools and materials to footwear workers. It also helps to reduce occupational risks by easing uncomfortable work positions.
Postural analysis and ergonomic intervention of unorganized workers in indian construction sectors

Abstract:Background: In India's fast-growing economy, the construction sector offers significant developments with huge employment opportunities but poses risks due to poor working environments and uncomfortable postures. Traditional methods, such as manual material handling, can lead to health hazards and musculoskeletal disorders such as overexertion, low back pain, etc. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the working postures of unorganized employees engaged in residential buildings using Ergofellow software and to recommend changes in their unsafe working postures. Methods: Participants' working positions were video recorded and the postures were analyzed using Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Ovako Working Posture Analysis (OWAS). Paired sample t-tests were used to analyze significant differences between the RULA and REBA scores after the ergonomic interventions were implemented. Results: From the analysis of RULA, REBA and OWAS, the working postures showed a high risk of potential injury and required an immediate change in employees' working postures. The RULA and REBA scores were subsequently lower after the ergonomic interventions, which were based on ergonomic and safety principles. The paired sample t-tests with p-values of less than 0.05 demonstrated decreased risks after ergonomic interventions. Conclusion: Working postures of the construction workers exposed to musculoskeletal disorders were examined and the ergonomic interventions were implemented. According to the recommendations, working positions were changed, and employee well-being was enhanced by reduced operational risks.

Abstract:This study proposes an integrated ergonomic evaluation designed to identify unsafe postures, whereby postural risks during industrial work are assessed in the context of virtual reality-based smart manufacturing. Unsafe postures were recognised by identifying the displacements of the centre of mass (COM) of body keypoints using a computer vision-based deep learning (DL) convolutional neural network approach. The risk levels for the identified unsafe postures were calculated using ergonomic risk assessment tools rapid upper limb assessment and rapid whole-body assessment. An analysis of variance was conducted to determine significant differences between the vertical and horizontal directions of postural movements associated with the most unsafe postures. The findings assess the ergonomic risk levels and identify the most unsafe postures during industrial work in smart manufacturing using DL method. The identified postural risks can help industry managers and researchers acquire a better understanding of unsafe postures. This study aims to identify unsafe postures and calculate risk levels in a VR-based smart manufacturing context. Deep learning is applied to identify unsafe postures by detecting COM displacements and risk levels are calculated using ergonomic risk assessment tools. Results revealed the most unsafe body postures, crucial for workers' safety.

An Online Multi-Index Approach to Human Ergonomics Assessment in the Workplace

Abstract:Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) remain one of the major occupational safety and health problems in the European Union nowadays. Thus, continuous tracking of workers' exposure to the factors that may contribute to their development is paramount. This paper introduces an online approach to monitor kinematic and dynamic quantities on the workers, providing on the spot an estimate of the physical load required in their daily jobs. A set of ergonomic indexes is defined to account for multiple potential contributors to WMSDs, also giving importance to the subject-specific requirements of the workers. To evaluate the proposed framework, a thorough experimental analysis was conducted on twelve human subjects considering tasks that represent typical working activities in the manufacturing sector. For each task, the ergonomic indexes that better explain the underlying physical load were identified, following a statistical analysis, and supported by the outcome of a surface electromyography (sEMG) analysis. A comparison was also made with a well-recognised and standard tool to evaluate human ergonomics in the workplace, to highlight the benefits introduced by the proposed framework. Results demonstrate the high potential of the proposed framework in identifying the physical risk factors, and therefore to adopt preventive measures. Another equally important contribution of this study is the creation of a comprehensive database on human kinodynamic measurements, which hosts multiple sensory data of healthy subjects performing typical industrial tasks.

Abstract:Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are serious workplace injuries that put workers' safety at risk. However, traditional WMSD assessments are based on the human-evaluation strategy (HES), requiring human intervention. Proactive strategy (PAS)-oriented WMSDs assessments collect data using posture data tags and special semi-human–machine equipment to improve efficiency and reduce human efforts to capture specific postures in a real-world setting. Meanwhile, more research on applying artificial intelligence-based pose machines for musculoskeletal risk assessment in various workplaces is needed. Hence, this study proposed a holistic posture acquisition and ergonomic risk analysis model with the PAS-oriented philosophy for developing a smartphone-based and workplace-based risk assessment system for WMSDs. The Convolutional Pose Machines (CPM) method was combined with a rapid entire body assessment method for the system's design. Finally, the smart ergonomic explorer (SEE) system includes three subsystems: an automotive scene capturer, an ergonomic risk level calculator, and a risk assessment reporter. A musculoskeletal risk assessment experiment with 13 poses was also carried out to validate the SEE system and compare its accuracy with manual evaluation. The result shows good agreement with the REBA score, with an average proportion agreement index (P0) of 0.962 and kappa of 0.82. It indicates that the proposed system can not only accurately analyze the working posture, but also accurately evaluate the total REBA scores. This study is hoped to provide practical advice and implications for achieving a more effective empirical response for WMSD assessment.

Abstract:Hand-intensive manufacturing processes, such as composite layup and textile draping, require significant human dexterity to accommodate task complexity. These strenuous hand motions often lead to musculoskeletal disorders and rehabilitation surgeries. We develop a data-driven ergonomic risk assessment system with a special focus on hand and finger activity to better identify and address ergonomic issues related to hand-intensive manufacturing processes. The system comprises a multi-modal sensor testbed to collect and synchronize operator upper body pose, hand pose and applied forces; a Biometric Assessment of Complete Hand (BACH) formulation to measure high-fidelity hand and finger risks; and industry-standard risk scores associated with upper body posture, RULA, and hand activity, HAL. Our findings demonstrate that BACH captures injurious activity with a higher granularity in comparison to the existing metrics. Machine learning models are also used to automate RULA and HAL scoring, and generalize well to unseen participants. Our assessment system, therefore, provides ergonomic interpretability of the manufacturing processes studied, and could be used to mitigate risks through minor workplace optimization and posture corrections.

Abstract:In the small‐scale fabrication sector, employee health and safety are the most important aspects for improving productivity and quality. There is a lack of risk assessment and limited information on human handling and ergonomic approaches in the working environment of the small‐scale fabrication sector. This study aims to analyze the association of human handling risk factors with work‐related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSD) symptoms among assembly operators and to evaluate the proposed ergonomic intervention for a high‐risk work task using ergonomic risk assessment tools such as Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA). A questionnaire survey and observation were conducted across seven work categories. The analysis using RULA and REBA revealed that cleaning, fitting, and assembling have a high‐risk level that requires ergonomic intervention. The virtual design of the proposed ergonomic workstation for high‐risk work tasks was created using CATIA software and evaluated using RULA and REBA analyses. Job and organizational factors were found to be the main contributors to WMSD, while individual factors, awareness levels, and ergonomic risk assessment had insignificant effects on WMSD. Based on RULA and REBA scores, the proposed ergonomic intervention significantly reduces risk by 30%–47%, improving overall health and safety for operators in diverse work activities.

Abstract:Risk identification on workstations is a crucial step to prevent the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) in workers. The available methods and tools used by ergonomists to assess and estimate the risk related to manual handling of loads under repetitive work cycles are usually biased by the inter-evaluator error that can lead to a subjective determination of work-related risks due to the application of, mainly, observational methods. This paper shows the preliminary results of a platform to assess the risk of musculoskeletal disorders during manual load-handling tasks using an instrumented system and using the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) method. Eight healthy subjects were measured during lifting activities using an optical-based and inertial-based motion capture systems. The developed software implements a semi-automated instrumented version of the NIOSH method, helping the evaluator with automated calculations of body segment locations, displacements and joint angles making it possible to obtain a objective risk classification. Also, we achieved a reduction of 85% in the time for the estimation of the necessary factors for the digital evaluation methodology, making the proposed platform a promising and attractive alternative for its application in real environments for risk assessments.Occupational health relevance- This work proposes an assistance tool for the detection of musculoskeletal disorders in activities related to manual handling of loads, essential to initiate modification strategies in the workplace, reduce the occurrence of occupational diseases and reduce the time of risk classification.
Using Digital Human Modelling to Evaluate the Risk of Musculoskeletal Injury for Workers in the Healthcare Industry

Abstract:Background: Hospital nurses and caregivers are reported to have the highest number of workplace injuries every year, which directly leads to missed days of work, a large amount of compensation costs, and staff shortage issues in the healthcare industry. Hence, this research study provides a new technique to evaluate the risk of injuries for healthcare workers using a combination of unobtrusive wearable devices and digital human technology. The seamless integration of JACK Siemens software and the Xsens motion tracking system was used to determine awkward postures adopted for patient transfer tasks. This technique allows for continuous monitoring of the healthcare worker's movement which can be obtained in the field. Methods: Thirty-three participants underwent two common tasks: moving a patient manikin from a lying position to a sitting position in bed and transferring the manikin from a bed to a wheelchair. By identifying, in these daily repetitive patient-transfer tasks, potential inappropriate postures that can be conducive to excessive load on the lumbar spine, a real-time monitoring process can be devised to adjust them, accounting for the effect of fatigue. Experimental Result: From the results, we identified a significant difference in spinal forces exerted on the lower back between genders at different operational heights. Additionally, we revealed the main anthropometric variables (e.g., trunk and hip motions) that are having a large impact on potential lower back injury. Conclusions: These results will lead to implementation of training techniques and improvements in working environment design to effectively reduce the number of healthcare workers experiencing lower back pain, which can be conducive to fewer workers leaving the healthcare industry, better patient satisfaction and reduction of healthcare costs.

Abstract:Introduction: Manual lifting operations continue to play a key role in the industrial and service sectors, inflicting physical strain on the musculoskeletal system, despite advances in automation. As a result, an experiment is carried out to assess the impact of two lifting task parameters; weight and height, based on the estimation of subjective responses and biomechanical loading, while lifting the weight symmetrically in the sagittal plane. Also to recommend the safe limit for manual lifting tasks. Methods: Twelve volunteer male students in the age group of 21 to 26 years performed lifting tasks from floor to 5 different heights (below the knee to ear level), with 5 different weights (10 to 20 kg) using free-style lifting techniques. The load pan with no handle was used for lifting weight, which is typically adopted in the Indian building construction field. The subjective estimate was obtained using workload assessment by body discomfort chart. The biomechanical loading (loading rate) for each lifted weight and height was collected using a force platform. Results: The results showed that heavier weights produced higher stresses than lower weights. The loading rate was found to be almost similar at waist or knee level. The loading rate was observed to be linearly increasing after waist level. The overall workload rating seems to be a good correlate with the mean loading rate to some extent. Conclusion: It is proposed to keep the maximum acceptable lifting weight from floor to knee, up to the ear level is 15 kg, to prevent any musculoskeletal or chronic injury.

Abstract:The ergonomic assessment of adopted working postures is essential for avoiding musculoskeletal risk factors in manufacturing contexts. Several observational methods based on external analyst observations are available; however, they are relatively subjective and suffer low repeatability. Over the past decade, the digitalization of this assessment has received high research interest. Robotic applications have the potential to lighten workers’ workload and improve working conditions. Therefore, this work presents a musculoskeletal risk assessment before and after robotic implementation in an assembly workstation. We also emphasize the importance of using novel and non-intrusive technologies for musculoskeletal risk assessment. A kinematic study was conducted using inertial motion units (IMU) in a convenience sample of two workers during their normal performance of assembly work cycles. The musculoskeletal risk was estimated according to a semi-automated solution, called the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) report. Based on previous musculoskeletal problems reported by the company, the assessment centered on the kinematic analysis of functional wrist movements (flexion/extension, ulnar/radial deviation, and pronation/supination). The results of the RULA report showed a reduction in musculoskeletal risk using robotic-assisted assembly. Regarding the kinematic analysis of the wrist during robotic-assisted tasks, a significant posture improvement of 20–45% was registered (considering the angular deviations relative to the neutral wrist position). The results obtained by direct measurements simultaneously reflect the workload and individual characteristics. The current study highlights the importance of an in-field instrumented assessment of musculoskeletal risk and the limitations of the system applied (e.g., unsuitable for tracking the motion of small joints, such as the fingers).

Abstract:Handcrafted footwear is a vital segment of leather industries worldwide. Among all handcrafted footwear, Kolhapuri handcrafted footwear is notable for its craft and design in India. This article presents design intervention in hand-sewn footwear of Kolhapur, India, to improve the well-being (in terms of better posture, and force exertion) of artisans and productivity (in terms of reduced time of task/work). Observations on field indicate that the sole (base and heel) cutting operation requires considerable manual effort and time. This motivated this study on the need for a design intervention to reduce/eliminate manual effort required in Kolhapuri footwear manufacturing without affecting craftsmanship. Evaluation of manual sole-cutting activity was performed using production and ergonomics techniques (i.e. task-time, two-handed process chart, posture and force exertion). Based on this identification of most felt needs, a novel design for Sole-cutting machine is conceptualized, developed and evaluated using production and ergonomics techniques. The evaluation of design intervention indicated its effectiveness in sole-cutting operations. This novel footwear Sole-cutting machine mounted as a workstations satisfy the ergonomics characteristics and end-user requirements of artisans, thereby improving their well-being.

Abstract:An end-to-end hardware-software pipeline is introduced to automatize ergonomics assessment in industrial workplaces. The proposed modular solution can interoperate with commercial systems throughout the ergonomics assessment phases involved in the process. The pipeline includes custom-designed Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors, two real-time worker movement acquisition tools, inverse kinematics processing and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) report generation. It is based on free tools such as Unity3D and OpenSim to avoid the problems derived from using proprietary technologies, such as security decisions being made under "black box" conditions. Experiments were conducted in an automotive factory in a workplace with WMSDs risk among workers. The proposed solution obtained comparable results to a gold standard solution, reaching measured joint angles a 0.95 cross-correlation and a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) lower than 10 for elbows and 12 for shoulders between both systems. In addition, the global RULA score difference is lower than 5 % between both systems. This work provides a low-cost solution for WMSDs risk assessment in the workplace to reduce musculoskeletal disorders and associated sick leave in industry, impacting the health of workers in the long term. Our study can ease further research and popularize the use of wearable systems for ergonomics analysis allowing these workplace prevention systems to reach different industrial environments.

Abstract:Multiple ergonomic risk assessment methods of unique structure are currently being used to direct industrial prevention initiatives focused on musculoskeletal injuries. In this study, the physical exposures required to perform an at-risk sawmill occupation were collected from 29 subjects via quantified means (surface electromyography and electrogoniometery) and used to calculate several ergonomic risk assessment methods. The aims of this study are to: 1) compare the output of the RULA, REBA, ACGIH TLV, Strain Index and OCRA ergonomic risk assessment methods, 2) examine the assessments' ability to differentiate between facilities reporting meaningfully different incidence rates, and 3) examine the effect of varying the definition of end range posture and exertion required on risk assessment scores. Risk level output assigned by all methods were not sensitive to inter facility differences in risk of injury, suggesting interpretation of risk index and component scores are needed to direct intervention. Components of all methodologies were sensitive to worker technique and facility assessed. Varying variable definition resulted in significantly different component, combined component and/or risk output scores in all methods assessed. The significant effect of posture and exertion variable definition suggests definitions taken to be interchangeable by work site evaluators are not equivalent.

Abstract:Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are a highly prevalent work-related health problem. Biomechanical exposure to hazardous postures during work is a risk factor for the development of MSD. This study focused on developing an inertial sensor-based approach to evaluate posture in industrial contexts, particularly in automotive assembly lines. The analysis was divided into two stages: 1) a comparative study of joint angles calculated during movements of the upper body segments using the proposed motion tracking framework and the ones provided by a state-of-the-art inertial motion capture system and 2) a work-related posture risk evaluation of operators working in an automative assembly line. For the comparative study, we selected data collected in laboratory (N = 8 participants) and assembly line settings (N = 9 participants), while for the work-related posture risk evaluation, we only considered data acquired within the automotive assembly line. The results revealed that the proposed framework could be applied to track industrial tasks movements performed on the sagittal plane, and the posture evaluation uncovered posture risk differences among different operators that are not considered in traditional posture risk assessment instruments.

Ergonomic Evaluation and Work Table Design for Wood Furniture Manufacturing Industry

Abstract:Indian wooden furnitures are generally manufactured in small-scale workshops, where most exercises are performed manually. This examination was led among the laborers of furnishing wooden workshops to check pervasiveness of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The objective of this study was to understand the MSDs and postures involved among the workers during furniture manufacturing. Survey questionnaire and indices were statistically analyzed to investigate further problems in the workers. In this study, 103 male workers working in workshops located in Jodhpur district were randomly selected for participation in the study. The Modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and checkpoints consisting of 11 body regions were used as information assortment tools. A VAS score was calculated for each section of the listing. Ergonomic evaluation of postures from 150 still photographs from 30 workers was done using ImageJ freeware and awkward posture of workers identified to improve the posture. Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) technique was used for the postural assessment. Work table modeling in Autodesk Inventor with adjustable height was done, and the postures were reanalyzed. The highest prevalence of symptoms was reported within the lower back (71.5%), upper back (52.17%). Lower back was among the highest priority as it has the highest VAS score following the upper back and knee. It was found that the RULA score for modified work table indicated reduction by around 87% when compared to the conventional postures. After modification of table, the worker’s priority scores (mean 3.1; SD 0.58) were curtailed to an extent.

Abstract:Ergonomics plays an important role to improve health, safety and productivity at workplaces. Faced with the increasing incidence of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSD), the manufacturing industries had taken multiple initiatives to redesign their workplaces based on ergonomic criteria. In this context, the current study has been carried out in a frame assembly workstation of a large Portuguese site of furniture manufacturing where most of workers were continuously exposed to WMSD risk factors (e.g. repetitive manual tasks and awkward postures) and suffering from some kind of musculoskeletal complaints. The main objective of the current study was to improve the ergonomic conditions of the referred assembly workstation. Based on anthropometric data of Portuguese adult population, an ergonomic assessment of a workstation redesign was developed. To verify the suitability of the redesign, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) for both workstations, existing and modified, was applied. The results showed that the ergonomic interventions are essential to reduce the mismatch between workers and workstations physical conditions, contributing to the postural correction and, consequently, to the WMSD prevention.
A Data Analytic End-to-end Framework for the Automated Quantification of Ergonomic Risk Factors Across Multiple Tasks Using a Single Wearable Sensor

Abstract:Existing ergonomic risk assessment tools require monitoring of multiple risk factors. To eliminate the direct observation, we investigated the effectiveness of an end-to-end framework that works with the data from a single wearable sensor. The framework is used to identify the performed task as the major contextual risk factor, and then estimate the task duration and number of repetitions as two main indicators of task intensity. For evaluation of the framework, we recruited 37 participants to complete 10 simulated work tasks in a laboratory setting. In testing, we achieved an average accuracy of 92% for task identification, 7.3% error in estimation of task duration, and 7.1% error for counting the number of task repetitions. Moreover, we showed the utility of the framework outputs in two ergonomic tools to estimate the risk of injury. Overall, we indicated the feasibility of using data from wearable sensors to automate the ergonomic risk assessment in workplaces.
