Abstract:An ultra-high sensitive distributed microstructured optical fiber (DMOF) acoustic sensor based on coherent OTDR demodulation method and hollow cylinder transducer is presented. As a consecutive longitudinal microstructured optical fiber, the DMOF contains backscattering enhanced points which greatly improved the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the acoustic sensing signal. Based on coherent OTDR demodulation method, the amount of phase change caused by sound pressure can be directly obtained. In order to increase the phase sensitivity, sensing fiber between two backscattering enhanced points along the DMOF is wrapped on a hollow cylinder transducer as an acoustic sensing unit. Finally, experiments on detecting sound waves in air are carried out. The results demonstrate that our fiber acoustic sensor has a flat sensitivity frequency response from 500Hz to 5kHz with a phase sensitivity of around -112dB(re rad/μPa) and a peak sensitivity of -83.7dB at 80Hz. It is noteworthy that the sensing mechanism based on the DMOF can be further extended to distributed acoustic sensing.

Abstract:A new multifeature recognition method for optical fiber vibration signals is proposed to solve the difficulty with the present long-distance distributed optical fiber sensing systems based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR) in effectively distinguishing vibrational intrusions. Firstly, wide-band background noise is reduced by spectral subtraction to enhance time-frequency characteristics of vibration signals. Then, multifeature parameters including short-time energy ratio, short-time level crossing rate, vibration duration, and power-spectrum energy ratio are extracted from the vibration signals. Finally, by utilizing support vector machine classifiers to identify multifeature vectors of different types of vibration signals, patterns of vibration events are recognized accurately. Experiments show that after using this method to process 800 vibration signal samples generated by four different vibration events, namely, taping, striking, shaking, and crushing, the signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced by more than 10dB and the recognition rates of vibration events are over 90%. The experimental results prove that this method can improve the classification accuracy of vibration events detected by phi-OTDR distributed optical fiber sensing systems with a recognition time below 0.6s, especially for long distances.

Abstract:To capture vibration waveforms whose frequencies exceed the limitation set by sensing fiber length in OTDR distributed vibration sensing (DVS), we propose a sampling rate enhancement technique based on frequency-division-multiplexing (FDM). Our proposal, unlike conventional FDM-based sampling rate enhancement methods, directly eliminates inherent distortion by using complementary frequency concept with new probe pulse sequence. The proposed method can suppress the distortion of arbitrary waveforms in regular fiber without prior knowledge of the vibration. The proposal can accurately measure vibration waveforms and fully characterize the vibration on a standard single-mode fiber; it determines not only the frequency but also the correct amplitude and the exact shape of the vibration. Furthermore, our distortion compensation scheme incorporates a state-of-the-art FDM-based fading suppression technique, yielding high sampling rates and high sensitivity simultaneously. We demonstrate the validity of the proposal by proof-of-concept experiments in which the number of multiplexed frequencies is set to three for both sampling rate enhancement and fading suppression. In creating the experimental setup, we take the great care with the optical pulse shape and the carrier frequencies to avoid crosstalk. We successfully measure vibration waveforms with frequencies ranging from 1 kHz to 9 kHz on a sensing fiber with length of about 12 km.

Abstract:The last years have witnessed the wide application of Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) systems in several fields, such as submarine cable monitoring, seismic wave detection, structural health monitoring, etc. Due to their distributed measurement ability and high sensitivity, DAS systems can be employed as a promising tool for the phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). However, it is also well-known that the traditional Φ-OTDR system suffers from Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) fading effects, which induce dead zones in the measurement results. Worse still, in practice it is difficult to achieve the optimum matching between spatial resolution (SR) and signal to noise ratio (SNR). Further, the overall frequency response range (FRR) of the traditional Φ-OTDR is commonly limited by the length of the fiber in order to prevent RBS signals from overlapping with each other. Additionally, it is usually difficult to reconstruct high frequency vibration signals accurately for long range monitoring. Aiming at solving these problems, we introduce frequency division multiplexing (FDM) that makes it easier to improve the system performance with less system structure changes. We propose several novel Φ-OTDR schemes based on Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) technology to solve the above problems. Experimental results showed that the distortion induced by fading effects could be suppressed to 1.26%; when the SR of Φ-OTDR is consistent with the length of the vibration region, the SNR of the sensing system is improved by 3 dB compared to the average SNR with different SRs; vibration frequencies up to 440 kHz have been detected along 330 m artificial microstructures. Thus, the proposed sensing system offers a promising solution for the performance enhancement of DAS systems that could achieve high SNR, broadband FRR and dead zone-free measurements at the same time.

Abstract:<p>We propose a multipath distributed acoustic sensing (MP-DAS) system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique. With FDM introduced to Φ-OTDR, simultaneously monitoring of multipath vibration is realized with flexible functionality. In the proposed MP-DAS system, the parameters of each path can be adjusted individually according to the path's specific monitoring requirement. A dual path Φ-OTDR system with 1 km and 22 km measurement distance is demonstrated in the experiment. Through heterodyne detection and FDM technique, both amplitude and phase information are obtained for event locating and vibration sensing in each of the two paths, with a spatial resolution of 5 m and 10 m respectively. With changing optical power and pulse width of one path, its influence on the other path is discussed and analyzed. This proposed MP-DSA system based on FDM technique provides an efficient and cost-effective way for upgrading a conventional single DAS into an integrated DAS network, which shows great potential in many applications such as modern city civil structure monitoring with different demands.</p>

Abstract:A distributed vibration-sensing system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and distributed feedback interferometer (DFI) with broadband frequency response and high spatial resolution has been proposed and demonstrated. A couple of narrow line-width lasers with different wavelengths were used to form the light source, which were consistent with two channels of dense wavelength division multiplexer. Both functions of Φ-OTDR and DFI could work synchronously without influence between each other. The characteristic of broadband frequency disturbance event could be fully captured and identified by the DFI, while the corresponding location could be determined by the Φ-OTDR scheme. Unlike ordinary interferometer, the proposed DFI scheme could make single-end monitoring without the installation of extra accessories. Furthermore, broadband frequency response range and precise locating of the disturbance event could be achieved at the same time. Experimental results have shown that spatial resolution of 10 m and frequency response up to 1 MHz have been obtained over 2.16-km-sensing fiber, which have proved the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:The frequency response of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ($\Phi $ -OTDR) is strictly limited by the repetition rate of the injected sampling pulses in conventional sensing scheme. To fully reconstruct an arbitrary vibration signal, the pulse repetition rate is required to be lower bounded by twice the maximum frequency of the vibration signal according to the Nyquist sampling theorem and at the same time upper bounded by the sensing fiber length to avoid generations of mixed Rayleigh backscattered signals from more than one optical pulse within the sensing fiber, making high-frequency vibration sensing over long distance impossible. In this work, we propose a novel method based on the serial multi-coset sampling (MCS) strategy which can recover sparse broadband vibration signals with sub-Nyquist sampling rates, which is thus able to break through the tradeoff between the measurable vibration frequency bandwidth and the sensing range. Pulses with non-uniform intervals are adopted to realize MCS for the Rayleigh backscattered lights along the entire sensing fiber rather than the traditional uniform pulse train. A continuous to finite (CTF) block is used to determine the active spectrum ranges of the sparse signal. By using a serial MCS sequence with an average sampling rate of 4.8 kHz, both a 4 kHz single-frequency sinusoidal signal and a 0.2 kHz bandwidth chirped signal with a center frequency of 4.6 kHz were sampled and recovered successfully in the simulation. In experiments, a single frequency vibration signal of 15 kHz and a chirped vibration signal with frequency ranging from 15 to 16 kHz were successfully identified and reconstructed over a sensing distance of 4 km using an average sampling rate of 21.6kHz, respectively, which however is not possible in conventional $\Phi $ -OTDR system. Furthermore, accurate identification of a broadband vibration signal with a maximum frequency of 6 kHz over a 10km-long sensing fiber shows that this method is also practically valid in long-distance sensing.

Abstract:The detected frequency response range of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry is limited by the sensing fiber length. In this paper, we demonstrate an amplitude modulated pulses based phase-sensitive OTDR to detect vibrations with high spatial resolution and wide frequency response range. The amplitude modulated pulses consisting of narrow pulses and background light are injected into the sensing fiber as probe light. The Rayleigh backscattering generated by the background light interferes at the detection end, presenting a phase sensitive response to external vibrations. The Rayleigh backscattering of narrow pulses are tracked to locate vibrations. The frequency information is obtained from the frequency domain analysis of the interference signal. The system can realize high frequency response with low repetition rate of probe pulses by one-end detection.

Abstract:We propose a fully distributed fusion system combining phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and OTDR for synchronous vibration and loss measurement by setting an ingenious frequency sweep rate ( FSR ) of the optical source. The relationships between FSR , probe pulse width and repeat period are given to balance the amplitude fluctuation of OTDR traces, the dead zone probability and the measurable frequency range of vibration events. In the experiment, we achieve synchronous vibration and loss measurement with FSR of 40 MHz/s, the proble pulse width of 100 ns and repeat rate of 0.4 ms. The fluctuation of OTDR trace is less than 0.45 dB when the signal-to-noise ratio ( SNR ) is over 12 dB for a captured vibration event located at 9.1 km. The proposed method can be used for not only detection but also early warning of damage events in optical communication networks.
Ultra-Low Frequency Vibration Sensing in Phase-sensitive OTDR using Multi-Scale VMD

Abstract:Laser frequency drift (LFD) restricts the low-frequency vibration sensing ability of phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer ( $\Phi $ -OTDR). In this study, we propose a self-diagnosis structure combining Mach–Zehnder interference and $\Phi $ -OTDR is first designed to realize LFD measurement and vibration sensing simultaneously. A multiscale variational mode decomposition (VMD) with the judgment at different amplitude scales, time scales, and modal scales is proposed to suppress the influence of LFD at low-frequency vibration demodulation. Experimental results show a long-time continuous LFD measurement and vibration sensing along the sensing fiber of 10040 m. After the parameter optimization of iteration and mode decomposition with multiscale VMD, infrasonic and sub-Hertz vibration signals can be detected with improved SNR. The ultralow-frequency vibration signal as low as 0.04 Hz is also demodulated under a long-time continuous detection of more than 40 min. The fitting coefficient between the recovered vibration frequency and the actual vibration frequency is 0.99966. This self-diagnostic structure, based on multiscale VMD, effectively suppresses the influence of LFD on $\Phi $ -OTDR and reliably recovers ultralow-frequency vibrations during long-term detection.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been proposed for distributed vibration sensing purpose over recent years. Emerging applications, including seismic and hydroacoustic wave detection, demand accurate low-frequency vibration reconstruction capability. We propose to use the direct-detection Φ-OTDR configuration to achieve quantitative demodulation of external low-frequency vibrations by phase-shifted dual-pulse probes. Simultaneous pulsing and phase shifting modulation is realized with a single acousto-optic modulator to generate such probes, relaxing the need for an additional optical phase modulator. In the experiments, vibrations with frequency as low as 0.5 Hz are successfully reconstructed with 10 m spatial resolution and 35 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Excellent linearity and repeatability are demonstrated between the optical phase demodulation results and the applied vibration amplitudes. The proposed method is capable of quantitative demodulation of low-frequency vibrations with a cost-effective system configuration and high computation efficiency, showing potential for commercial applications of distributed seismic or hydroacoustic wave acquisition.
Distributed fiber sparse-wideband vibration sensing by sub-Nyquist additive random sampling

Abstract:The round trip time of the light pulse limits the maximum detectable vibration frequency response range of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry ({\phi}-OTDR). Unlike the uniform laser pulse interval in conventional {\phi}-OTDR, we randomly modulate the pulse interval, so that an equivalent sub-Nyquist additive random sampling (sNARS) is realized for every sensing point of the long interrogation fiber. For an {\phi}-OTDR system with 10 km sensing length, the sNARS method is optimized by theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, and the experimental results verify that a wide-band spars signal can be identified and reconstructed. Such a method can broaden the vibration frequency response range of {\phi}-OTDR, which is of great significance in sparse-wideband-frequency vibration signal detection, such as rail track monitoring and metal defect detection.

Abstract:The multi-parameter sensing is in great demand for comprehensive recognition in various application scenarios. We demonstrate a distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) for simultaneous vibration and temperature/strain sensing based on the integration of Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). A double heterodyne detection configuration is set up to receive the Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering simultaneously, which can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reduce the polarization fading noise for the Brillouin signal at the same time. Most components in the setup are multiplexed for the Brillouin and Rayleigh signals. The overall cost is much lower than the summation of the BOTDR and the Φ-OTDR setup. In experiments, the setup is capable of measuring temperature change near the end of the 49.9 km long fiber with 0.381 MHz measurement uncertainty and restore different vibration patterns correctly by demodulating the phase variation of Rayleigh scattering signal, owning a 20 m spatial resolution. The sampling rate of the vibration measurement is 1.8 kHz, and the achieved dynamic strain resolution is 1.235 nɛ/√Hz with 100 Hz vibration.

Abstract:A distributed fiber optic vibration sensing system with high frequency response and multi-points accurate location is proposed and demonstrated by combining a feedback loop-based interferometer (FLI) and a phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR). The FLI and the phi-OTDR are merged together based on a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) scheme. Assisted by the feedback loop, the interferometer structure can achieve a high frequency detection using a single fiber only. Meanwhile, the vibration position is obtained by the phi-OTDR, which shares the same fiber with the FLI. Experimental results demonstrate that the frequency response of the merged system reaches up to 300 kHz, and the spatial resolution is 15 m at the sensing length of 4 km. Compared with previous reported systems, the structure of our proposed system is simpler, only one fiber is used to detect the frequency and the position of the vibration. In addition, the single end sensing has also been achieved in the proposed system.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a distributed optical fibre sensor (DOFS) based on the hybrid of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and Raman optical time domain reflectometry (ROTDR), which could reconstruct the acoustic and temperature fields all along the sensing fibre at the same time. The Rayleigh back scattering (RBS), Raman Stokes (RS) and Raman anti-Stokes (RAS) generated by the probe pulse were separated by a WDM filter. Then the RBS was received by a heterodyne balanced photo detector (BPD) for quantitative vibration measurement and the dynamic acoustic field reconstruction, while the RS and RAS components were received directly by avalanche photodiodes (APDs) for temperature demodulation. The experimental results have shown that the proposed hybrid system could measure the temperature profile along a 12km long standard single-mode fibre with a maximal temperature uncertainty of 0.95°C; and a linearity response of R2=0.9986, along with a periodical knocking event detected simultaneously. Meanwhile, a 100 Hz sinusoidal vibration at 12 km distance along the same fibre could be clearly identified. Distributed knocking vibration and temperature was achieved at the same time with high accuracy.

Abstract:A high-performance distributed optical fiber sensor based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) for dynamic strain measurement has been proposed. In this newly designed system, ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (UWFBGs) are sparsely embedded in the sensing fiber. Through an unbalanced 3 × 3 coupler structure, the reflected lights from two adjacent UWFBGs would be mixed with each other and then split into three parts for phase demodulation. Then, a novelty table-look-up scheme is introduced to precisely demodulate the frequency, amplitude, and phase of dynamic strain. Rayleigh back-scattering light is utilized to identify and locate the accurate position of vibration event between two adjacent UWFBGs. The experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of reconstructing the vibration with a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9986 and a fiber length variation sensitivity of 117 pm/(Hz)1/2. Meanwhile, a wide frequency response band from 50 to 2075 Hz is achieved with high signal-to-noise ratio above 56 dB.

Abstract:Abstract Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Ф-OTDR) is an effective way to detect vibrations and acoustic waves with high sensitivity, by interrogating coherent Rayleigh backscattering light in sensing fiber. In particular, fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) based on the Ф-OTDR with phase demodulation has been extensively studied and widely used in intrusion detection, borehole seismic acquisition, structure health monitoring, etc., in recent years, with superior advantages such as long sensing range, fast response speed, wide sensing bandwidth, low operation cost and long service lifetime. Significant advances in research and development (R&D) of Ф-OTDR have been made since 2014. In this review, we present a historical review of Ф-OTDR and then summarize the recent progress of Ф-OTDR in the Fiber Optics Research Center (FORC) at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), which is the first group to carry out R&D of Ф-OTDR and invent ultra-sensitive DAS (uDAS) seismometer in China which is elected as one of the ten most significant technology advances of PetroChina in 2019. It can be seen that the Ф-OTDR/DAS technology is currently under its rapid development stage and would reach its climax in the next 5 years.

High spatial-resolved φ-OTDR system based on differential pulse width sequence technique

Abstract:The spatial-resolved capacity of a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry ( $\varphi $ -OTDR) is limited by the optical pulse width, which increases the localization errors when measuring vibrations with range shorter than that determined by the pulse width. To overcome this problem, a high spatial-resolved $\varphi $ -OTDR with a differential pulse width sequence is proposed. The centimeter spatial resolution sensing can be realized by using meter equivalent pulses. This scheme utilizes the time-domain waveform subtraction obtained from the same pulse repetition rate and different pulse widths to form the differential vibration information at each fiber location. First, we provide a comprehensive treatment to prove that the proposed scheme can improve the spatial-resolved capacity of the $\varphi $ -OTDR system. The spatial resolution of 1.08m for 60/50ns pulse sequence is realized with a 30cm vibration source. Second, in a further proof-of-concept experiment, the spatial resolution is achieved up to 0.55m with a 55/50ns pulse sequence. It is demonstrated that the ability of spatial-resolved is enhanced greatly without any hardware modifications, compared to that required in the conventional method. This method holds great significance in accurately locating vibration signals within the narrow range of the distributed vibration sensor.
