Abstract:A new multifeature recognition method for optical fiber vibration signals is proposed to solve the difficulty with the present long-distance distributed optical fiber sensing systems based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR) in effectively distinguishing vibrational intrusions. Firstly, wide-band background noise is reduced by spectral subtraction to enhance time-frequency characteristics of vibration signals. Then, multifeature parameters including short-time energy ratio, short-time level crossing rate, vibration duration, and power-spectrum energy ratio are extracted from the vibration signals. Finally, by utilizing support vector machine classifiers to identify multifeature vectors of different types of vibration signals, patterns of vibration events are recognized accurately. Experiments show that after using this method to process 800 vibration signal samples generated by four different vibration events, namely, taping, striking, shaking, and crushing, the signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced by more than 10dB and the recognition rates of vibration events are over 90%. The experimental results prove that this method can improve the classification accuracy of vibration events detected by phi-OTDR distributed optical fiber sensing systems with a recognition time below 0.6s, especially for long distances.
Coherent OTDR Based Ultra-High Sensitive Acoustic Sensor Assisted with Distributed Microstructured Optical Fiber(DMOF) and Hollow Cylinder Transducer

Abstract:An ultra-high sensitive distributed microstructured optical fiber (DMOF) acoustic sensor based on coherent OTDR demodulation method and hollow cylinder transducer is presented. As a consecutive longitudinal microstructured optical fiber, the DMOF contains backscattering enhanced points which greatly improved the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the acoustic sensing signal. Based on coherent OTDR demodulation method, the amount of phase change caused by sound pressure can be directly obtained. In order to increase the phase sensitivity, sensing fiber between two backscattering enhanced points along the DMOF is wrapped on a hollow cylinder transducer as an acoustic sensing unit. Finally, experiments on detecting sound waves in air are carried out. The results demonstrate that our fiber acoustic sensor has a flat sensitivity frequency response from 500Hz to 5kHz with a phase sensitivity of around -112dB(re rad/μPa) and a peak sensitivity of -83.7dB at 80Hz. It is noteworthy that the sensing mechanism based on the DMOF can be further extended to distributed acoustic sensing.

Abstract:A distributed fiber optic vibration sensing system with high frequency response and multi-points accurate location is proposed and demonstrated by combining a feedback loop-based interferometer (FLI) and a phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (phi-OTDR). The FLI and the phi-OTDR are merged together based on a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) scheme. Assisted by the feedback loop, the interferometer structure can achieve a high frequency detection using a single fiber only. Meanwhile, the vibration position is obtained by the phi-OTDR, which shares the same fiber with the FLI. Experimental results demonstrate that the frequency response of the merged system reaches up to 300 kHz, and the spatial resolution is 15 m at the sensing length of 4 km. Compared with previous reported systems, the structure of our proposed system is simpler, only one fiber is used to detect the frequency and the position of the vibration. In addition, the single end sensing has also been achieved in the proposed system.

Abstract:A system based on phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry is proposed for simultaneously strain and vibration sensing. The strain of fiber is detected by comparing the patterns of signal for different laser frequencies, and the vibration of fiber is detected simultaneously from the signals for any certain laser frequency. During the measurement, frequencies of the probe optical pulses are modulated sequentially in ascending or descending order. Using the signals generated by optical pulses with the same frequency, the vibration of fiber is detected with fast response speed; using that with different frequencies, the strain of fiber is detected with high resolution. In our experiment, a sensing system with 2-m spatial resolution, up to 1-kHz frequency measurement range and 10-ne strain resolution is realized for a 9-km sensing fiber length.

Abstract:Distributed vibration sensing measurement with high frequency response is still a challenging task in distributed optical fiber vibration sensing systems. In this paper, a WDM based integrated scheme is proposed to directly demodulate the high frequency vibration signal with high spatial resolution by merging the phase sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry and the Sagnac interferometer. A maximum frequency response of ~2.5 MHz and a spatial resolution of 20 m have been achieved in a 4 km sensing fiber link. Comparison to conventional sensing structure, the proposed scheme shows great application potential in the field of distributed vibration sensing system.

Abstract:A distributed vibration-sensing system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and distributed feedback interferometer (DFI) with broadband frequency response and high spatial resolution has been proposed and demonstrated. A couple of narrow line-width lasers with different wavelengths were used to form the light source, which were consistent with two channels of dense wavelength division multiplexer. Both functions of Φ-OTDR and DFI could work synchronously without influence between each other. The characteristic of broadband frequency disturbance event could be fully captured and identified by the DFI, while the corresponding location could be determined by the Φ-OTDR scheme. Unlike ordinary interferometer, the proposed DFI scheme could make single-end monitoring without the installation of extra accessories. Furthermore, broadband frequency response range and precise locating of the disturbance event could be achieved at the same time. Experimental results have shown that spatial resolution of 10 m and frequency response up to 1 MHz have been obtained over 2.16-km-sensing fiber, which have proved the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid distributed fiber sensing system for multi-parameter detection. The integration of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry ({\Phi}-OTDR) and Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (B-OTDR) enables measurement of vibration, temperature and strain. Exploiting the fast changing property of vibration and the static property of temperature and strain, the laser pulse width and intensity are modulated and then injected into the single-mode sensing fiber proportionally, so that the three concerned parameters can be extracted simultaneously by only one photo-detector and data acquisition channel. Combining with advanced data processing methods, the modulation of laser pulse brings additional advantages because of trade and balance between the backscattering light power and nonlinear effect noise, which enhances the signal-to-noise ratio, and enables sub-meter level spatial resolution together with long sensing distance. The proposed method realizes up to 4.8 kHz vibration sensing with 3 m spatial resolution at 10 km standard single-mode fiber. And measurements of the distributed temperature and stress profile along the same fiber with 80 cm spatial resolution are also achieved concurrently.

Abstract:We propose a fully distributed fusion system combining phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) and OTDR for synchronous vibration and loss measurement by setting an ingenious frequency sweep rate ( FSR ) of the optical source. The relationships between FSR , probe pulse width and repeat period are given to balance the amplitude fluctuation of OTDR traces, the dead zone probability and the measurable frequency range of vibration events. In the experiment, we achieve synchronous vibration and loss measurement with FSR of 40 MHz/s, the proble pulse width of 100 ns and repeat rate of 0.4 ms. The fluctuation of OTDR trace is less than 0.45 dB when the signal-to-noise ratio ( SNR ) is over 12 dB for a captured vibration event located at 9.1 km. The proposed method can be used for not only detection but also early warning of damage events in optical communication networks.

Abstract:A distributed vibration sensing technique using double-optical-pulse based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) and an ultraweak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array is proposed for the first time. The single-mode sensing fiber is integrated with the UWFBG array that has uniform spatial interval and ultraweak reflectivity. The relatively high reflectivity of the UWFBG, compared with the Rayleigh scattering, gains a high signal-to-noise ratio for the signal, which can make the system achieve the maximum detectable frequency limited by the round-trip time of the probe pulse in fiber. A corresponding experimental φ-OTDR system with a 4.5 km sensing fiber integrated with the UWFBG array was setup for the evaluation of the system performance. Distributed vibration sensing is successfully realized with spatial resolution of 50 m. The sensing range of the vibration frequency can cover from 3 Hz to 9 kHz.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber sensing system (DOFS) has great potential in areas of petroleum exploration and ocean defense. By algorithm optimization in different coding environment, the multi-point and real-time heterodyne demodulation of DOFS is achieved. In experiments, the length of the optical fiber is 500m, the spatial resolution is 5m and the system sampling rate is 200kHz, under which condition the data rate reaches up to 160MB/s and the system can stilled be demodulated timely. Based on this, by plotting the three-dimensional diagram (vibration intensity versus time and space), the whole DOFS can be detected continuously and accurately.

Abstract:We proposed a multichannel optic fiber sensing system based on hybrid Sagnac structure to convert phase changes of light transmitting in optic fiber caused by vibrations to be detected into intensity changes of interference signals. By using the differential demodulation method, the originally applied vibration signal can be retrieved for further signal analysis. The auxiliary modulation method was introduced into this system so that even tiny vibration signals less than one period can also be detected precisely since all the original signals would be carried by the high frequency and large modulation signals. In the signal retrieve algorithm, we also added a response smoothing transform algorithm to improve the smoothness of the system's frequency response. Besides, in association with wavelength division multiplexer, this sensing system can realize multipoints' vibration detection. By designing the spatial arrangement of sensing fiber array according to application scenarios, this system can realize monitoring and positioning vibration sources with appropriate algorithms.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) has been proposed for distributed vibration sensing purpose over recent years. Emerging applications, including seismic and hydroacoustic wave detection, demand accurate low-frequency vibration reconstruction capability. We propose to use the direct-detection Φ-OTDR configuration to achieve quantitative demodulation of external low-frequency vibrations by phase-shifted dual-pulse probes. Simultaneous pulsing and phase shifting modulation is realized with a single acousto-optic modulator to generate such probes, relaxing the need for an additional optical phase modulator. In the experiments, vibrations with frequency as low as 0.5 Hz are successfully reconstructed with 10 m spatial resolution and 35 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Excellent linearity and repeatability are demonstrated between the optical phase demodulation results and the applied vibration amplitudes. The proposed method is capable of quantitative demodulation of low-frequency vibrations with a cost-effective system configuration and high computation efficiency, showing potential for commercial applications of distributed seismic or hydroacoustic wave acquisition.

Abstract:A novel vibration signal demodulation scheme of fiber-optic interferometric sensor is proposed and demonstrated. A frequency-modulated (FM) single sideband (SSB) light-wave signal is generated by applying an FM microwave signal to a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) for the demodulation of fiber-optic vibration interferometric sensor. A method of 12-sample orthogonal demodulation algorithm (ODA) based on setting the system sampling rate to 12 times of the FM frequency is adopted for the generation of two orthogonal signals for arctangent transformation. The experimental results show that the harmonic distortion is well suppressed compared with the traditional phase generation carrier (PGC) arctangent (PGC-Arctan) algorithm, and a minimum detectable phase shift is achieved about 6.3 x 10(-5) rad/root Hz at 5 kHz.

Abstract:The detected frequency response range of phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry is limited by the sensing fiber length. In this paper, we demonstrate an amplitude modulated pulses based phase-sensitive OTDR to detect vibrations with high spatial resolution and wide frequency response range. The amplitude modulated pulses consisting of narrow pulses and background light are injected into the sensing fiber as probe light. The Rayleigh backscattering generated by the background light interferes at the detection end, presenting a phase sensitive response to external vibrations. The Rayleigh backscattering of narrow pulses are tracked to locate vibrations. The frequency information is obtained from the frequency domain analysis of the interference signal. The system can realize high frequency response with low repetition rate of probe pulses by one-end detection.

Abstract:A novel ultra-long distributed vibration sensing (DVS) system using forward transmission and coherent detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed scheme, a pair of multi-span optical fibers are deployed for sensing, and a loop-back configuration is used by connecting the two fibers at the far end. The homodyne coherent detection is used to retrieve the phase and state-of-polarization (SOP) fluctuations caused by a vibration while the localization of the vibration is realized by tracking the phase changes along the two fibers. The proposed scheme has the advantage of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and ultra-long sensing range due to the nature of forward transmission and coherent detection. In addition, using forward rather than backward scattering allows detection of high frequency vibration signal over a long sensing range. More than 50dB sensing SNR can be obtained after long-haul transmission. Meanwhile, localization of 400 Hz, 1 kHz and 10 kHz vibrations has been experimentally demonstrated with a spatial resolution of less than 50 m over a total of 1008 km sensing fiber. The sensing length can be further extended to even trans-oceanic distances using more fiber spans and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), making it a promising candidate for proactive fault detection and localization in long-haul and ultra-long-haul fiber links.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel integrated vibration sensing system based on phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (phase-OTDR) and one-way ring Sagnac interferometer (RSI) is proposed and demonstrated. Based on the relationship between the reflectometer and interferometer phase signal spectra, a cross-correlation algorithm is introduced for under-sampling judgment. By mapping the under-sampled frequency to the real frequency, the vibration signal is correctly recovered to improve the system frequency response range. The proposed signal recovery algorithm can accurately reconstruct individual signals when multiple vibration spectra do not overlap. In addition, the demodulation result of the interferometer is used as the output signal when the vibration signal amplitude exceeds the detection range of the reflectometer to improve the dynamic range of the system. Experimental results show that the system achieves correct demodulation of low-frequency, high-frequency, wide-frequency, and multi-point vibration. Thus, the proposed system is crucial for advancing distributed fiber optic sensing applications.

Abstract:The deep integration of communication and sensing technology in fiber-optic systems has been highly sought after in recent years, with the aim of rapid and cost-effective large-scale upgrading of existing communication cables in order to monitor ocean activities. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a high-degree of compatibility was shown between forward-transmission distributed fiber-optic vibration sensing and an on–off keying (OOK)-based communication system. This type of deep integration allows distributed sensing to utilize the optical fiber communication cable, wavelength channel, optical signal and demodulation receiver. The addition of distributed sensing functionality does not have an impact on the communication performance, as sensing involves no hardware changes and does not occupy any bandwidth; instead, it non-intrusively analyzes inherent vibration-induced noise in the data transmitted. Likewise, the transmission of communication data does not affect the sensing performance. For data transmission, 150 Mb/s was demonstrated with a BER of 2.8 × 10−7 and a QdB of 14.1. For vibration sensing, the forward-transmission method offers distance, time, frequency, intensity and phase-resolved monitoring. The limit of detection (LoD) is 8.3 pε/Hz1/2 at 1 kHz. The single-span sensing distance is 101.3 km (no optical amplification), with a spatial resolution of 0.08 m, and positioning accuracy can be as low as 10.1 m. No data averaging was performed during signal processing. The vibration frequency range tested is 10–1000 Hz.

Abstract:We demonstrate a distributed fiber optics disturbance sensing system based on a dual-Sagnac interferometer that uses one broadband light source and works at the same wavelength. This proposed sensing system is able to reduce the coherent noise and avoid the influence of polarization crosstalk effectively. Experimental results show that, for the presented prototype system with the fiber loop of 1.3 Km, when the sampling rate is set as 32.8 kHz, the maximum detectable frequency reaches the system theoretical limit of 8.18 kHz, and the spatial resolution is less than 15 m with a frequency range of 50-4000 Hz. The system software can get the real-time data stream to detect the disturbance and self-control the Mach-Zehnder electro-optical modulator (MZEOM). Abstract:We demonstrate a novel type of distributed optical fiber acoustic sensor, with the ability to detect and retrieve actual temporal waveforms of multiple vibration events that occur simultaneously at different positions along the fiber. The system is realized via a dual-pulse phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry, and the actual waveform is retrieved by heterodyne phase demodulation. Experimental results show that the system has a background noise level as low as 8.91×10-4 rad/√Hz with a demodulation signal-to-noise ratio of 49.17 dB at 1 kHz, and can achieve a dynamic range of ∼60 dB at 1 kHz (0.1 to 104 rad) for phase demodulation, as well as a detection frequency range from 20 Hz to 25 kHz.
