Abstract:The analysis of the mechanical recycling market in North America indicates that flexible packaging is the most significant end-use application of PE (i.e., > 40%), with a domestic recycling rate lower than 10%. Several technical barriers currently hinder film and flexible plastics recycling, including feedstock contamination, lack of stability and coordination in the supply chain, inefficient sorting, poor processing capabilities, and lack of end markets. In this work, we use ultrahigh-speed extrusion to modify the molecular weight of film-grade LDPE to promote its recycling via injection molding. The extrusion process is analyzed considering the effect of screw speed and feed rate on the rheology of the modified materials. The modified LDPE was injection molded using a novel pressure-controlled injection molding strategy. The tensile testing of the parts manufactured using the modified material showed a slightly reduced elastic response and significantly lower elongation at break. The sustainability analysis for the proposed combination of ultrahigh-speed extrusion and injection molding showed that the embodied energy is substantially lower than that obtained from the injection molding of the virgin LDPE. The energy saving can be converted to CO2 emissions showing that the proposed process could save 6 kg of CO2 for each kg of LDPE converted into an injection molded product.

Material flow analysis and recycling performance of an improved mechanical recycling process for post-consumer flexible plastics

Abstract:Increasing the recycling rates for post-consumer flexible plastics (PCFP) waste is imperative as PCFP is considered a difficult-to-recycle waste with only 17 % of PCFP effectively recycled in Europe. To tackle this pressing issue, improved mechanical recycling processes are being explored to increase the recycling rates of PCFP. One interesting option is the so-called quality recycling process (QRP) proposed by CEFLEX, which supplements more conventional mechanical recycling of PCFP with additional sorting, hot washing, improved extrusion, and deodorization. Material flow analysis (MFA) model is applied to assess the performance of QRP. Four performance indicators related to quantity (process yield and net recovery) and quality (polymer grade and transparency grade) are applied to measure the performance of three PCFP mechanical recycling scenarios. The results are compared against the conventional recycling of PCFP, showing that QRP has a similar process yield (64 % – 66 %) as conventional recycling (66 %). The net recovery indicator shows that in QRP higher recovery rates are achieved for transparent-monolayer PCFP (>90 %) compared to colored-multilayer PCFP (51 % – 91 %). The quality indicators (polymer and transparency grades) demonstrate that the regranulates from QRP have better quality compared to the conventional recycling. To validate the modeling approach, the modeled compositional data is compared with experimental compositional analyses of flakes and regranulates produced by pilot recycling lines. Main conclusions are: (i) although yields do not increase significantly, extra sorting and recycling produces better regranulates’ quality (ii) performing a modular MFA gives insights into future recycling scenarios and helps in decision making.

Quality evaluation and economic assessment of an improved mechanical recycling process for post-consumer flexible plastics

Abstract:Packaging represents the largest fraction of plastic waste in Europe. Currently, mechanical recycling schemes are mainly focused on the recovery of rigid packaging (like bottles), while for flexible packaging, also called films, recycling rates remain very low. Existing mechanical recycling technologies for these films are quite basic, especially in the case of complicated post-consumer flexible plastics (PCFP) waste, leading to regranulate qualities that are often subpar for renewed use in demanding film applications. In this study, the technical and economic value of an improved mechanical recycling process (additional sorting, hot washing, and improved extrusion) of PCFPs is investigated. The quality of the four types of resulting regranulates is evaluated for film and injection molding applications. The obtained Polyethylene-rich regranulates in blown films offer more flexibility (45-60%), higher ductility (27-55%), and enhanced tensile strength (5-51%), compared to the conventional mechanical recycling process. Likewise, for injection molded samples, they exhibit more flexibility (19-49%), enhanced ductility (7 to 20 times), and higher impact strength (1.8 to 3.8 times). An economic assessment is made between the obtained increased market value and the capital investment required. It is shown that the economic value can be increased by 5-38% through this improved recycling process. Overall, the study shows that it is possible to increase the mechanical recycling quality of PCFP in an economically viable way, thus opening the way for new application routes and overall increased recycling rates.

Abstract:Physical recycling provides a feasible application route for the recycling of waste polymer. With the booming of automobiles industry, the recycling of automobile shredder residue (ASR) with complicated constitutes gradually become an urgent issues owing to its difficulty for traditional recycling. Herein, solid‐state shear milling (S3M) technology which can control the domain size of the various polymers in blend was applied to overcome the mismatch of viscosity and poor compatibility of ASR and thus modify the processability to match practical manufacturing. Resultantly, the melt processing of ASR was achieved and a high‐density polyethylene (HDPE)/ASR composite was also prepared with more optimal mechanical properties (tensile strength: 53.2 MPa, impact strength: 36.9 kJ/m2), compared with commercially available recycled PE. This work not only provided a feasible application route for the recycling of ASR material, but also demonstrated the optional methodology for recycling polymer waste with complicated component via physical recycling way.

Abstract:In this study, material development, characterization, and sustainability assessment are performed on blends from recycled post-consumer commodity plastics for fused deposition modeling (FDM) filament extrusion. A recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) and high-density polyethylene (rHDPE) blend 80:20 ratio is modified using three different methods: compatibilization with Maleic Anhydride, surface functionalization of PET with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), and hybridization by combination of the two methods which is a novel approach. The selected blends were reinforced with chopped glass fibers and characterized. The printability of blends was assessed, and the dimensional accuracy of the prints was calculated. In addition, a cost estimation and comparison between the developed blends and the commercially available FDM filaments was carried out. Finally, life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted for each prepared blend to facilitate the decision of the optimum blend in relation to mechanical properties and environmental performance and hence correlate the material, economic, and sustainability advantages.

Abstract:The recycling of source separated polyolefins (POs) (e.g., light weight packaging waste) is already state of the art. Therefore, further plastic materials contained in mixed wastes have become more important due to increasing legal pressure. Mixed commercial and municipal solid wastes contain large quantities of POs. These mixed wastes would usually be treated in waste incinerators or processed to refuse-derived fuel for cement plants. Large-scale experiments were conducted to assess the potential of such POs from these waste streams for recycling processes. The potential and applicability of a dry-mechanical and subsequently wet-mechanical (Wet-mechanical) processing with the aim of generating a PO concentrate for chemical recycling purposes was assessed. These investigations' focus was put on the centrifugal force separator technology as the core element of Wet-mechanical processing. In addition to the input material, all output materials and process water streams were chemically and physically characterized to estimate potential treatment or recycling paths. Results demonstrate that a two-stage purification is necessary to produce POs with sufficient purity out of both wastes. Chlorine and heavy metal levels are simultaneously reduced. The increased quantity of impurities only slightly changes the density of the process waters. Process water analyses show that wastewater treatment is necessary before discharge into a receiving water or sewage treatment plant. The sediment does not fulfil any hazard-relevant properties, and different thermal treatment options are possible.

Abstract:Less than half of e-waste plastics are sorted worldwide, and this rate is likely to decline as major processing countries have banned importation of e-waste plastics. This forces the development of decentralized processing facilities, also known as microfactories. The present work investigates the recyclability of different grades of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer, polycarbonate, and polypropylene, which were found to be very abundant in a recycling site in the UK. The determination of the matrix relied on the resin identification codes imprinted in the e-waste plastics and subsequent Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Melt-blend extrusion technology enabled the valorization of the wasted thermoplastics as 3D filament without significant degradation of the polymers. The recycled materials maintained the tensile strength at around 2.5 MPa in agreement with the specifications offered by virgin polymers. Further characterization was done by means of laser microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray fluorescence to determine the commercial viability of the recycled filament. A modified solvent-based method was developed with acetone to remove the brominated flame retardants: 25 g/100 mL, 30 min of contact time, and 4 extraction steps. The FTIR results show that the degradation of the rubbery dispersed phase corresponding to the butadiene can be accumulated in the less soluble fraction of the extracted ABS.
Solid-State Shear Milling for Recycling Aluminum–Plastic Packaging Waste: A Sustainable Solution for Mixed Plastic Waste

Abstract:The application of paper–aluminum–plastic packaging has been widely adopted in various fields such as the food and medical industries, owing to its exceptional preservation and obstruction properties. Nonetheless, the recycling process for paper and aluminum from this packaging type typically involves water pulping and solvent separation. The resulting residual waste, commonly known as multi-plastic waste (PMW), poses significant challenges in terms of separation and recycling. In this research article, we propose a solution for the recycling of PMW using solid-state shear milling (S3M). This process utilizes powerful three-dimensional shear force to achieve pulverization and excellent dispersion of multicomponent polymers, all while maintaining ambient temperature conditions. The thermoplastic processability of milled PMW powder was improved. The results indicate that a significant reduction in the the average particle size of PMW from 700 μm to 226 μm after 10 milling cycles, as evidenced by both a particle size analyzer and SEM. Furthermore, S3M processing leads to a good dispersion of PMW domains, as confirmed by the reduction in domain size from 9.64 μm to 2.65 μm. DSC and DMA reveal excellent compatibility between the components of the composite, resulting in improved mechanical properties such as tensile stress (from 14.03 MPa to 22.02 MPa) and unnotched impact strength (from 3.26 KJ/m2 to 4.82 KJ/m2). The findings suggest that S3M technology could be an effective and sustainable method for recycling PMW without any separation process, with promising industrial application.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the development of a novel processing technology to tackle hard-to-recycle plastic packaging waste contaminated with food residues. The proof-of-concept (POC) technology can effectively separate food residual amounts from plastic waste materials to a level acceptable for further re-use or recycling of the plastic packaging. To assess this technology, we have conducted spectroscopic, thermal, and calorimetric characterizations of the obtained fractions, such as cleaned mixed plastics (CMP), food waste with mixed plastics (FWMP), and a mixture of microplastics (MP). The analyses were carried out with the aid of Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Microcone Combustion Calorimetry (MCC), and 'bomb' calorimetry. The highest ratio of CMP to FWMP and the lowest amount of MP were obtained utilizing 700 rpm blade rotational speed and 15 s residence time of contaminated plastics in a cutting mill chamber. The plastics were freed from food contamination by 93–97%, which highlights a strong potential of the POC as a solution for 'dry-cleaning' of similar wastes on a larger scale. The main components of the CMP fraction were low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which are recyclable plastics. The knowledge and understanding of thermal degradation behaviours and calorimetric attributes of separated fractions, determined in this study, are essential in informing the industrial players using pyrolysis as a technique for recycling plastics.

Abstract:Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most commonly used polyester plastics worldwide but is extremely difficult to be hydrolyzed in a natural environment. PET plastic is an inexpensive, lightweight, and durable material, which can readily be molded into an assortment of products that are used in a broad range of applications. Most PET is used for single-use packaging materials, such as disposable consumer items and packaging. Although PET plastics are a valuable resource in many aspects, the proliferation of plastic products in the last several decades have resulted in a negative environmental footprint. The long-term risk of released PET waste in the environment poses a serious threat to ecosystems, food safety, and even human health in modern society. Recycling is one of the most important actions currently available to reduce these impacts. Current clean-up strategies have attempted to alleviate the adverse impacts of PET pollution but are unable to compete with the increasing quantities of PET waste exposed to the environment. In this review paper, current PET recycling methods to improve life cycle and waste management are discussed, which can be further implemented to reduce plastics pollution and its impacts on health and environment. Compared with conventional mechanical and chemical recycling processes, the biotechnological recycling of PET involves enzymatic degradation of the waste PET and the followed bioconversion of degraded PET monomers into value-added chemicals. This approach creates a circular PET economy by recycling waste PET or upcycling it into more valuable products with minimal environmental footprint.
Recycling of post-consumer plastic packaging waste in the EU: Recovery rates, material flows, and barriers

Abstract:Increasing plastic waste recycling is a milestone of European environmental policy to reduce environmental impacts and dependency on foreign resources. This is particularly challenging for plastic packaging waste, consisting of very heterogeneous fractions and typically rather contaminated. In this study, we collected primary data from plants sorting and reprocessing plastic packaging waste to illustrate process efficiencies, material flows, and barriers. We observed that significant losses of target materials occurred both at sorting and reprocessing stages. These were higher for polymers such as films, polypropylene and polystyrene, and lower for polyethylene terephthalate and high-density polyethylene. Applying material flow analysis, we estimated an overall recycling rate for post-consumer plastic packaging waste in EU27 in 2017 of 14% (not considering waste exported as recycled; 25% otherwise). An improved scenario for 2030 showed that achieving a recycling rate of about 49% was possible when best available practices and technologies were implemented. To fulfil the ambitious recycling targets set at EU27 level (55% recycling rate), substantial improvements are necessary at the plants, product design, collection system, and market level. Our findings further indicate that films and other problematic contaminants in the input-waste considerably hamper the recovery rates, thus the improvement of the efficiency of the collection systems is imperative. In parallel, the development of markets for lower value fractions, e.g. polypropylene, could be a way forward to increase recycling, while improvements in the product design will considerably reduce the presence of impurities and contaminants in the input-waste.

Chemical Recycling of Mixed Plastics in Electronic Waste Using Solvent-Based Processing

Abstract:Currently, less than 20% of electronic waste (E-waste) produced in the U.S. is recycled. To improve the recycling rate of E-waste, the study aimed to: (1) identify the major plastics found within electronic shredder residue (ESR), (2) design solvents and processing conditions capable of separating out 90% of the plastic in ESR, and (3) estimate the energy efficiency of the solvent-based process developed. Preliminary screening showed 25 wt.% of the ESR was composed of plastics, with two polymers dominating the sorted plastic fraction—polystyrene (PS, 40 wt.%) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS, 25 wt.%). Subsequently, solvents and anti-solvents were screened using Hansen Solubility Parameter Theory for PS, ABS, and ESR dissolution. The pre-screening results showed dichloromethane (DCM) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the most effective solvents for PS and ABS, with methanol (MeOH) and ethylene glycol (EG) as the most effective anti-solvents. By optimizing the dissolution time and the solvents used, the highest polymer dissolution yield (99 wt.%) was achieved using DCM for 48 h. Both MeOH and EG precipitated 71 wt.% of the polymer fraction of ESR. EG removed more phosphorus containing flame retardants (94 wt.%) than MeOH (69 wt.%). Energy analysis indicated that the solvent-based processes could save 25–60% of the embodied energy for PS and ABS. Characterization showed that the solvent-based processing could preserve the high molecular weight fraction of the polymers while removing flame retardants at the same time. The results from this study prove the potential of solvent-based processing to produce secondary plastic materials from E-waste for cross-industry reuse.

Abstract:The mismanagement of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) resulted in numerous discarded plastics in the natural environment, and these waste plastics might experience aging, breaking, and migration, which becomes a crucial microplastic source. Sustainable management of WEEE plastics presents a considerable opportunity for resource recovery and microplastic pollution prevention. Flotation separation is a significant process of mechanical recycling, while most flotation methods can only deal with binary plastic mixtures. In this work, an advanced, stepwise, and sustainable flotation method was advocated to separate multi-plastics by polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) modification. The abundant hydrophilic groups and environmental friendliness of PAC prompted us to further investigate the wetting effect. PAC had varied hydrophilization effects on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polystyrene (PS) surfaces, but polyethylene terephthalate (PET) retained hydrophobicity. Treatment conditions, including PAC dosage, temperature, time, and pH were optimized. 100% of PET could be purified after primary separation, and the purities of ABS and PS could reach 100% and 97.4% after secondary separation, respectively. The strength of the interaction was determined by the different surface potentials and functional groups. In PAC solution, long-chain molecules or ions might interact with plastic surfaces electrostatically, and Al3+ could bridge long-chain molecules and plastic surfaces, thereby strengthening the polymer hydrophilicity. We further improved the PAC treatment process, and the reuse of PAC reduced modifier usage to 84.4 g/ton waste plastics, which was cost-effective in industrial applications. A preliminary evaluation of the energy consumption and environmental impact indicated that PAC treatment was superior to other modification methods. This work is an initial attempt at the stepwise separation of waste plastic and shows promising prospects for recycling plastic waste.

Abstract:Multi‐material recycling printability of PET‐HDPE. The high volume of plastic waste and the extremely low recycling rate have created a serious challenge worldwide. Local distributed recycling and additive manufacturing (DRAM) offers a solution by economically incentivizing local recycling. One DRAM technology capable of processing large quantities of plastic waste is fused granular fabrication, where solid shredded plastic waste can be reused directly as 3D printing feedstock. This study presents an experimental assessment of multi‐material recycling printability using two of the most common thermoplastics in the beverage industry, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high‐density polyethylene (HDPE), and the feasibility of mixing PET and HDPE to be used as a feedstock material for large‐scale 3‐D printing. After the material collection, shredding, and cleaning, the characterization and optimization of parameters for 3D printing were performed. Results showed the feasibility of printing a large object from rPET/rHDPE flakes, reducing production costs by up to 88%. Highlights Study: multi‐material recycling printability of PET‐HDPE. Large‐scale fused particle‐based 3‐D printing technically possible. Direct waste 3‐D printing rPET/rHDPE flakes, reducing production costs up to 88%.

Abstract:Globally, we produced 489 million tonnes of plastic in 2023 and we recycled only 8.17%. This study navigates the landscape of recycling practices, highlighting the imperative to reevaluate and upgrade industry-standard protocols. The central focus of this study is on integrating more robust traceability criteria and advanced quality testing methodologies to improve recycled plastics with intrinsic value, particularly in anticipation of future market applications. The investigation examines the prevailing industry standard traceability and quality framework. It then assesses the applicability of those standards using technical datasheets for recycled high-density polyethylene resin grades. This study proposes a paradigm shift toward a more sophisticated analytical approach. This comprehensive framework aims to transcend traditional quality and traceability evaluation. This paper employs a mixed methodological approach, including a thematic analysis of relevant industry standard regulations and an in-depth literature review, to address the need for an operational framework for recycling quality. This study highlights that recycling quality depends on technical attributes determining functionality and application suitability. While some properties are measured, the conventional framework does not address the degradation level of recycled plastic. This study concludes with broader considerations, emphasising the need for a traceability model to disclose material history and composition. This study advocates an industry-wide upgrade in recycling standards, prioritising traceability and quality testing. The proposed enhancements in testing grids and the improved understanding of recycling quality collectively contribute to a holistic framework, unlocking the intrinsic value of recycled plastics for future market applications.

Abstract:The low recycling rate of post-consumer plastic packaging waste (PPW), which is partly due to insufficient separate collection, heterogeneous composition and high levels of contamination, poses a challenge in Austria, where the recycling rate must double in order to meet the target of 55 %. This study analyzes key packaging characteristics of non-beverage plastic bottles influencing recyclability, using Vienna as a case study. Additionally, a net quantity indicator and separate collection rates were calculated. 738 bottles from mixed MSW and 1,159 bottles from separate PPW collection were analyzed. The main polymer's proportion described by the net quantity indicator was higher for bottles from separate collection (69-72 %) than from mixed MSW (58 %), showing that a large share of the foreign materials are residues and dirt, with significantly higher contents in mixed MSW (20 %) than in separate collection (11 %). With a separate collection rate of 19.2 %, the great potential for recycling currently lies in mixed MSW at 4,112 t/yr. Thereof, 46 % is uncolored, 54 % is colored/white and, in terms of material grade, 30 % is food grade. The most common filling volume for PET, PP and HDPE was 0.5 < x ≤ 1.5 L (23-59 %) and the most common decoration technology was label (60-85 %). PET and PP had the highest shares of food-grade bottles (37-46 %), while PP had the highest share of colored bottles (22-31 %). The mechanical recycling potential of bottles depends largely on packaging characteristics, influencing separate collection and also automatic sorting. Harmonized design specifications are therefore crucial for this heterogeneous PPW fraction.
Challenges to reducing post-consumer plastic rejects from the MSW selective collection at two MRFs in São Paulo city, Brazil

Abstract:The present study is concerned with an overview of the main aspects of the selective collection from the municipal solid waste in São Paulo City and the limitations of its two automated Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) to tackle the problem of reducing recyclable plastic waste sent to landfills as rejects. The research aimed to characterize the composition of screened mass flows of as-received mixes from the selective collection at the two MRFs through in situ random collection campaigns. The results of the gravimetric analysis have shown that both MRFs provided higher recovery yields (> 40%) for paper, cardboard, Tetrapack®, ferrous and non-ferrous metals (aluminium), akin to some post-consumer plastics (PET, HDPE/LDPE and PP) that ranged from 38% for PP up to 89% for HDPE, Losses in recovery yields of recyclable plastics after the screening process resulted from lack of clear resin label identification, inefficient materials sortation by households and poor recognition capabilities of the MRFs screening devices to target and segregate specific types of plastics such as PS and vinylic. Packaging design complexity, multi-layered material diversity, and food contaminated post-consumer packaging pose further challenges to improve the plastics recovery capabilities of the two MRFs.

Abstract:This work investigates the feasibility of producing low melt flow rate recycled polypropylene (PP). For this purpose, recyclates are produced from extrusion blow molded PP packaging waste and compared with a PP recyclate from conventional sorting. In addition, different washing and production processes of the extrusion blow molding recyclates are investigated. The recyclates are compared using rheological, mechanical, thermal, and spectroscopic methods. Polypropylene (PP) recyclates face limitations in their use due to lower qualities compared with virgin PP, resulting from contaminations and the mixing of different PP grades. In particular, their high melt flow rate (MFR) hinders their suitability for applications requiring low MFR, such as pipes. This study investigates the feasibility of producing low MFR PP recyclates from packaging waste. For this purpose, recyclates were produced exclusively from manually sorted extrusion blow molding grades and compared with a recyclate derived from a conventional PP waste stream. Different washing temperatures and recyclate production processes were used to study their effects on the properties of the recyclates. The main objective was to determine the lowest achievable MFR and the rheological, mechanical, and thermal properties of the recyclates from improved sorting. The results are intended to serve as reference points for the evaluation of future automatic sorting trials. The enhanced sorting resulted in an 80% reduction in the MFR and improved ductility, thereby extending the potential applications of the recyclate. The different washing and production processes did not have a significant effect on the investigated properties, except for a slight decrease in the MFR with hot washing and the omission of the pelletizing step.

Abstract:The environmental stress caused by climate change has provided an impetus to the search for greener solutions. A striking example of this is plastic pollution. One of the main difficulties in finding alternatives is maintaining an ecological balance along with economic viability. Other than reducing the consumption of plastics, recycling is one useful approach. In this context, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is in the spotlight. This saturated polyester with unique properties is one of the most used plastics, and its use is increasing year by year. Plus, it is the most recycled polymer in the world. Among different recycling methods used today, the well-established equipment for mechanical recycling is the most efficient process and has a lower carbon footprint. However, despite the effort spent on recycling PET and the extensive number of published papers on this matter, many challenges still restrain its industrial development. One of the reasons for this is a lack of understanding of the structural modifications caused by processing and the effect on the properties of the final product. This Review presents an overview of PET’s intrinsic properties, before and after mechanical recycling. By focusing on the mechanical process, the different degradation mechanisms and their effects are described. Widely used reinforcement techniques are explained along with their possible drawbacks. A better view of what is yet to be understood might guide new solutions for PET’s processing and reuse.

Abstract:The decentralized production associated with material extrusion additive manufacture (MEX) has been proposed as an ideal path to increase the circularity of plastics through direct recycling. Although multiple studies have reported on the 3D printing of various recycled plastics, variability in recycled materials, in particular post-consumer waste, challenges the direct extension of these results into production through MEX. Here, we demonstrate filament fabrication and printing of post-consumer polypropylene (PP), where the PP is sourced from clear, cold drink cups from three large international food service and beverage retail chains to provide well defined plastic waste that is perfectly sorted for recycling. These sources for the recycled PP were selected due to their ready availability to enable the results to be directly applied for hobbyist printing, blow molded products to provide good mechanical performance, and the clarity of the PP which suggests formulation design to minimize the PP crystal size. Despite the similarities in the end use product and their physical appearance, the source for the PP impacted the mechanical properties and the visual appearance of the printed objects. These differences can be directly traced to the rheological properties and oxidative stability of the PP at conditions relevant with the print process. These results clearly illustrate differences in initial formulation design and branding details, even when the product is for the same application, impacts the performance of recycled plastics in AM. The high viscosity associated with the PP from blow molding leads to requirements for higher extrusion temperatures for printing. The combination of high temperature and shear during extrusion process of 3D printing degrades the recycled PP. For circularity with MEX with recycled PP, one needs to consider the evolution in the properties of the polymer. Rheological details of recycled plastics are critical to selection of processing conditions and performance of MEX parts. Reporting of rheological data of recycled plastics and after printing is critical to enable translation towards circular 3D printing of recycled plastics.
