Abstract:Cotton fiber functionalized with tetraethylenepentamine and chitosan (CTPC) was prepared and used as absorbents for the removal of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions from aqueous solution. The functionalized materials (CTPC) were characterized by SEM/EDX, FTIR, BET and XRD to confirm the characterization and structural changes of fibers before and after the modifying process. The adsorption performance of CTPC was investigated with different pH, contact time and initial concentration of three kinds of metal ions. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was 81.97 mg g(-1) for Cu(II), 123.46 mg g(-1) for Pb(II) and 72.99 mg g(-1) for Cr (III) based on the Langmuir isotherm model at optimal pH (5.0). Adsorption kinetics of CTPC fibers for Cu(II), Pb (II), and Cr(III) ions followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption-desorption experiments demonstrated that CTPC showed better stability, and CTPC would be an effective and practical material for the treatment and recycling of heavy metal ions in the wastewater.

Abstract:Fluorinated compounds provide excellent oil and water repellency to cotton fabrics. But, they have various toxic effects on human health and the environment. To address this challenge, scientists are continuously struggling to develop the eco-friendly oil and water repellents. To support these efforts, this research focused on the synthesis of some bio-based and non-fluorinated oil and water repellent recipes for the cotton fabric through the polymerization of palmitic acid with an eco-friendly cross-linker "citric acid" considering the effects of catalyst, enhancer, time, temperature, and polymerization environment. After the numerous trials, an optimized water repellent finish has been developed. The performance of the cotton fabric treated with the newly developed water repellent was measured in terms of the oil and water repellency, crease recovery angle, contact angle, stain release, air permeability, shrinkage, washing durability, tensile strength, tear strength, and antimicrobial performance. Finally, the characterization of the optimized recipes and the treated fabric was performed through the various techniques such as H-NMR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results exhibited the successful synthesis and application of the newly developed recipes onto the cotton fabric.

Abstract:In the present work, diphenolic acid (DPA), a sustainable green platform chemical, was employed as a finishing reagent to impart antibacterial and antiviral functions to cotton fabric. After a simple pad-dry-cure process, DPA molecules were covalently linked onto cotton fiber surfaces via the esterification reaction between their carboxyl groups and the hydroxyl groups of cellulose on the fiber surfaces. The DPA phenolic groups induced onto the cotton fibers enable to destroy pathogens by protein affinity interaction. Experimental results show that the DPA modified fabrics realize not only high bacteriostatic reduction rates (BR) against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , but also show excellent antivirus effect that allow a rapid virus inactivation shorter than 20 min. It was also demonstrated that the modification process generated insignificant damage on the cotton fiber structure, and the resultant cotton fabrics are safe for human skin. Therefore, this work may open a new way to endow cotton textiles with antibacterial and antiviral functions.

Abstract:Water scarcity and pollution has become one of the most serious problems in the world. Generally, both oils and microorganisms exist in polluted water, hence multi-functional materials for the removal of diverse substances from water are desired. We reported a facile method for preparing cotton fabric possessing hybrid poly(sodium methacrylate) (pNaMAA)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for oil/water separation and water disinfection. A crosslinked pNaMAA layer was generated on the cotton surface by ultraviolet-initiated polymerization. By replacing Na+ in pNaMAA molecules, Ag+ was incorporated into the fabric and then was reduced to AgNPs in situ by photo-thermal reduction. Due to the high underwater oleophobicity and bactericidal effect of the pNaMAA/AgNP hybrid layer, the gravity-driven oil/water separation efficiency of the prepared fabric was higher than 99% and the bacteria killing ratio achieved nearly 100%. Furthermore, AgNPs exhibited relatively good fastness during application. Combining their excellent oil removal and water disinfection effectiveness, these textile-based materials provide a promising future in the field of point-of-use water purification.
Adsorption of Diclofenac Sodium and Tetracycline From Aqueous Solution Using PVA Films Prepared with Modal/Cotton Fiber Wastes

Abstract:10 % PVA film, prepared by adding waste modal/cotton (50 : 50) fibers, has enabled recycling and waste minimization in the textile industry. The adsorption of tetracycline (pH 9) is conducted according to the Freundlich isotherm model, while the adsorption of diclofenac sodium (pH 5) is carried out according to the Langmuir isotherm model. In this study, fiber‐polymer composite films were prepared by adding 0.5 g, 1.0 g, and 1.5 g of modal/cotton (50 : 50) waste to 10 % PVA film, and the properties of the films were revealed by SEM, FTIR analyzes and swelling percentage. It is observed that the strength of the bonds in the FTIR analysis decreases when modal/cotton fibers are added to the PVA film. While a 406 % swelling is achieved in the PVA film, the swelling percentages of the films decrease when modal/cotton fibers are added to the PVA film, and a greater swelling is observed at pH 9 compared to pH 5. The adsorption efficiency of tetracycline and diclofenac sodium on the films was researched at different pH levels and film doses. Tetracycline removal reached its highest value at pH 9, while diclofenac sodium removal reached its highest value at pH 5. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were determined for tetracycline and diclofenac sodium adsorption. Tetracycline removal is better described by the Freundlich isotherm model, whereas diclofenac sodium removal fits the Langmuir isotherm model better. As a result, films prepared with modal/cotton waste not only provide tetracycline and diclofenac sodium removal but also contribute to waste recycling by utilizing waste fiber materials.

Abstract:Water contamination by emerging organic pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), is becoming more and more serious. Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) are considered as promising adsorbents to remove the PPCPs. To overcome the limitation of PAFs in their powder forms for large-scale applications, herein, we proposed a strategy to covalently anchor PAFs onto electrospun polymer fiber membranes. Polyaniline (PANI) played the role of aromatic seed layer, which was coated on the electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber membrane first. Then, PAF-45 modification was in situ synthesized in the presence of the PANI-coated electrospun PAN fiber membrane. This study could make the PAF-based materials be handled more easily and improve the surface area of electrospun fiber membrane. The obtained composite adsorbent (PAF-45-PP FM) was applied for the adsorption of three PPCPs: ibuprofen (IBPF), chloroxylenol (CLXN), and N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), which exhibited high adsorption capacity and good recycling ability. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacities of PAF-45-PP FM toward IBPF, CLXN and DEET were 613.50, 429.18, and 384.61 mg/g, respectively. In addition, after ten adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption capacities toward the three PPCPs decreased slightly. Through an adsorption comparison test, the adsorption capacity of PAF-45-PP FM almost attributed to the loading PAF-45. The adsorption mechanism analysis illustrated that there were pore capture, hydrophobic interaction and π-π interaction between PPCPs and PAF-45-PP FM. Therefore, the PAF-45-PP FM can be potential adsorbents to purify water contaminated with PPCPs.

Abstract:Nowadays, the environmental problem caused by oily wastewater discharge and crude oil leakage has attracted worldwide attention. Recently developed technologies for oil/water separation have been based mainly on materials with special wettability. In this work, a self-cleaning system with smart-control and reusable functions for oil/water separation has been built on cotton fabric via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). The fabric showed high pH-and thermo-responsibility, which was strongly dependent on the pDMAEMA grafting ratio. And by modulating pH or temperature, the fabric switched from superhydrophilic (WCA similar to 0 degrees) to highly hydrophobic (WCA similar to 130 degrees), and therefore, were suitable both for the separation of water-rich or oil-rich oil/water mixtures as a type of adsorbent material. The fabric could adsorb oil over 4 times its own weight, and reversibly release it in acidic water, making the fabric easily recyclable.

Abstract:Cotton is often modified to minimize its disadvantages during textile processing. However, most finishing methods suffer from difficulties in finding finishing reagents and chemical aids. Here, we report a novel strategy based on a combination of the pad-dry-cure method and the construction of surface coating to expand the scope of the finishing reagent and simplify the finishing process. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) oligomer was first grafted onto cotton fiber surfaces via esterification between the carboxyl groups of PAA and the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose molecules on the cotton fiber surface. Hexadecanol was then reacted with the residual carboxyl groups of the PAA to build a lipid layer on the cotton fiber surfaces. The enhanced adsorption capability for hydrophobic molecules was verified via three reagents: stearyl trimethyl ammoium bromide (STAB), 9,10-dihydro-9-oxaco-10-phospho-10-oxide (DOPO), and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid hexadecyl ester (Cyasorb 2908), which they offered bacterial-, flame-, and UV-resistance to the cotton fabrics, respectively. This strategy can lead to finishing technologies suitable for scale-up in the textile industry.
The efficient removal of diclofenac and indomethacin with novel polyaniline-modified microcrystalline cellulose/covalent organic framework nanocomposites

Abstract:Background To address the problem of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) contamination, a novel polyaniline-modified microcrystalline cellulose/covalent organic framework nanocomposite (MCC/COF/PANI) was synthesized for the removal of indomethacin (IDM) and diclofenac (DCF). Methods MCC/COF/PANI was synthesized by solvothermal and in-situ polymerization methods. Significant findings The MCC/COF/PANI obtained fast and good adsorbing performance for pollutants within 60 min. The maximum adsorption capacities of MCC/COF/PANI on IDM and DCF were 149.1 and 112.5 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm of MCC/COF/PANI on IDM/DCF were fitted to the pseudo-second-order, Langmuir/Freundlich mode. Moreover, XPS, BET and FT-IR proved that the adsorption mechanism of MCC/COF/PANI on pollutants mainly involved in the pore filling, π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. In addition, the MCC/COF/PANI showed good stability and reusability with high removal rates of IDM (76.8%) and DCF (76.6%) even after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Generally, the prepared MCC/COF/PANI nanocomposites had application in the removal of PPCPs from the water environment.

Abstract:Proper treatment and disposal of industrial pollutants of all kinds are a global issue that presents significant techno-economical challenges. The presence of pollutants such as heavy metal ions (HMIs) and organic dyes (ODs) in wastewater is considered a significant problem owing to their carcinogenic and toxic nature. Additionally, industrial gaseous pollutants (GPs) are considered to be harmful to human health and may cause various environmental issues such as global warming, acid rain, smog and air pollution, etc. Conductive polymer-based nanomaterials have gained significant interest in recent years, compared with ceramics and metal-based nanomaterials. The objective of this review is to provide detailed insights into different conductive polymers (CPs) and their nanocomposites that are used as adsorbents for environmental remediation applications. The dominant types of CPs that are being used as adsorbent materials include polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (Ppy), and polythiophene (PTh). The various adsorption mechanisms proposed for the removal of ODs, HMIs, and other GPs by the different CPs are presented, together with their maximum adsorption capacities, experimental conditions, adsorption, and kinetic models reported.

Abstract:Cotton fiber is a low-cost material made from renewable and eco-friendly cellulose and can be used for various applications. However, raw cellulose has a low capacity for capturing pollutants. In this study, recycled cotton fiber was modified with polypyrrole through a chemical oxidative polymerization approach to enhance its implementation and suitability for removing reactive orange 5 (RO5) and reactive yellow 15 (RY15) from aqueous solutions. The cotton/polypyrrole (cotton/ppy) was characterized using SEM, EDS FTIR, and XRD techniques. These analyses indicated that polypyrrole was successfully coated on the cotton fiber. The optimal conditions for maximizing adsorption efficiency, including contact time, concentration of dye, adsorbent dosage, pH levels, and temperature, were determined. RO5 and RY15 eliminations are enhanced in the acidic environment (pH = 2, contact time (RO5: 120 min, RY15: 90 min, adsorbent dosage: 200 mg, dye concentration (RO5: 20 mg/L, RY15: 40 mg/L)). The best fit for the adsorption procedure of RO5 and RY15 is the Temkin isotherm model, which indicates a chemisorption process delivers viable mechanism for the adsorption of RO5 (R 2 =0.992) and RY15 (R 2 = 0.987). Moreover, pseudo-first-order is the leading kinetic model for both RO5 (R 2 = 0.992) and RY15 (R 2 = 0.987). Furthermore, the study of the fixed-bed column was carried out, showing that the service volume decreased as the flow rate increased. The removal efficiency for RO5 and RY15 exceeded 80% even after using cotton/ppy adsorbent eight times. Therefore, the sustainable polypyrrole-functionalized recycled cotton fiber adsorbent is an excellent choice to eliminate dye effluents.

Abstract:The presence of pharmaceuticals or their active metabolites in receiving waters is a sign of the inefficient removal of bioactive substrates from wastewater. Adsorption seems to be the most effective and inexpensive method of their removal. Waste management aimed at sorbents is a promising way to sustain several sustainable development goals. In the presented paper, the removal of the two most widely used drugs in the wastewater was examined. Diclofenac and carbamazepine were removed from water and wastewater using textile waste-derived sorbents. Their removal efficiency was verified by testing several process parameters such as the time of the sorption, the presence of interfering inorganic ions, the presence of dissolved organic matter, the initial pH and ionic strength of the solution, and various water matrices. The adsorption capacity was noted for diclofenac (57.1 mg/g) and carbamazepine (21.25 mg/g). The tested process parameters (pH, presence of inorganic ions, dissolved organic matter, ionic strength, water matrix) confirmed that the presented waste materials possessed a great potential for pharmaceutical removal from water matrices.

Abstract:Water pollution caused by industrial organic dyes poses a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. Natural cellulose fibers functionalized with photocatalysts are regarded as promising materials for removing organic dyes. However, the immobilized photocatalysts usually exhibit a high recombination rate of photo-generated charge carriers, which seriously reduces the photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, a photocatalytic functional cotton fabric was prepared by a two-step process, including in-situ gas-phase polymerization of pyrrole and layer-by-layer self-assembly process of bismuth oxyiodide. The conjugated molecular structure of polypyrrole (PPy) conductive polymer could effectively facilitate the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs of bismuth oxyiodide photocatalyst on the fiber surface. The ability of composite fabrics to absorb visible light was greatly enhanced. The photocatalytic functional fabric exhibited a high photocatalytic degradation efficiency towards organic dye contaminants. On the other hand, the PPy nano-layers on cotton fibers induced bismuth oxyiodide nanosheets to self-assemble a more dense porous structure, which trapped a large amount of tiny air. The prepared fabric exhibited an obvious superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle above 150° and an excellent self-cleaning ability toward liquid/solid contaminants. This work provides a new insight into water treatment through the development of efficient photocatalytic textiles.

Abstract:Persistent water contaminants include a variety of substances that evade natural cleaning processes posing severe risks to ecosystems. Adsorptive elimination of these harsh contaminants is key approach for their safer attenuation. Herein we present the design and development of Prussian blue incorporated polypyrrole (PPY/PB) hybrid nanocomposite as a high-performance adsorbent for elimination of malachite green (M.G), isoniazid (INH) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) water contaminants. The structure-activity response of the nanocomposite's adsorption propensity for selected contaminants was recognized from its maximum adsorption capacities under environmentally viable conditions. The standard techniques of material characterization corroborated that strong dopant-polymer interactions enhanced the material desirabilities on composite formation. The studies also confirmed the enhancement of the electro-active surface area of PPY/PB nanocomposite compared to pristine PPY. In-depth analysis and optimization of adsorption influencing factors (pH, temperature, and adsorbent dose) were performed. The equilibrium studies, kinetic model fitting, aided with FTIR analysis, allowed determining the adsorption mechanism. A synergistic two step mechanism is proposed wherein adsorption besides concentrating activates persistent contaminants on adsorbent surface and catalyst mineralizes or transforms it to a harmless form. As a modular case of synergistic adsorptive and catalytic steps, 4-NP trapping by the PPY/PB nanocomposite was utilized in its catalytic reduction to aminophenol using NaBH4 as reducing agent under dark condition. In summary this work highlights the targeted design of adsorbent, its optimization for adsorptive avidity and the synergistic role of adsorption trapping in catalytic degradation of persistent contaminants.

Abstract:Cadmium ion Cd 2+ contamination is a major environmental issue caused by industry. Polyarylidene N-hexane pyrrole (PAP h ) and crosslinked polyarylidene N-phenyl pyrrole (PAP D ) were prepared from the previously synthesized polymer (polyarylidene ketone (PAK)) by using the advantage of repeating carbonyl groups at the 1,4 position and reacting it with hexylamine and P-phenylenediamine via the Paal–Knorr reaction. Various methods were used to characterize polymers, such as FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), UV–visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), zeta potential, and surface area measurements (BET), revealing successful fabrication, good thermostability, and well-defined microporous structures useful for Cd 2+ adsorption. Optimal adsorption capacities of 55.8 mg g −1 for PAP h and 86.95 mg g −1 for PAP D indicate a significant enhancement in Cd 2+ adsorption via their microporous structures, Cd 2+ adsorption was also investigated in terms of contact time, initial concentration, and pH. A total input concentration of 30 ppm Cd ions, may yield an 84.3% removal rate for PAP h and an 89.2% removal rate for PAP D . The experimental results were well-fit by many models, including pseudo-second-order kinetics (PSO), Freundlich isotherms, intraparticle diffusion, and Langmuir. The varying adsorption performances of the two polymers studied, (PAP h ) and (PAP D ), were found to be derived from their respective chemical structures, which include various functional groups, according to studies conducted on Cd 2+ in an aqueous solution. Cd 2+ adsorption on polymers was considered physisorption; π –cation interactions and surface complexation played significant roles in adsorption. The PAP polymers may be considered promising substitutes and innovative adsorbents to remove Cd 2+ ions from a water solution.

Abstract:Worldwide, there is growing concern over the toxicity of arsenic in drinking water. The US Environmental Protection Agency and Central Pollution Control Board (India) have set a safe limit of 50 parts per billion for arsenic in drinking water. Millions of people are at immediate risk due to high concentrations of arsenic in drinking water, particularly in developing nations where arsenic poisoning symptoms have been observed. One of the essential techniques described in this article is the absorption of arsenic from contaminated water by sustainable cellulosic materials like jute and wood sawdust after suitable modification. Jute and sawdust are cheap and abundantly available in South Asia. They are functionalized with polypyrrole coating by in situ chemical polymerization of pyrrole in aqueous medium in the presence of ferric chloride. Polypyrrole-coated jute fabric (with 11.28% polypyrrole add-on) and polypyrrole-coated sawdust (with 5.28% polypyrrole add-on) are found to be excellent adsorbers of arsenic ion (As 3+ ) from water. The effect of dosage of polypyrrole-coated adsorbents, treatment time and pyrrole concentration on the As removal efficiency have been investigated in this work. The arsenic concentration in water is determined using a microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometer with the highest level of accuracy. Maximum As removal efficiency by the polypyrrole-coated sawdust and polypyrrole-coated jute fabric is found to be 80.90% and 97.3%, respectively, from a 50 mL, 7.5 parts per million As solution with a dosage of 1 g at neutral pH. The polypyrrole-coated jute and sawdust are characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to understand the chemical interaction between cellulose and polypyrrole molecules. The scanning electron microscope studies reveal a uniform coating of polypyrrole around the surface of jute fibre and sawdust particles. Thermo-gravimetric analysis shows good thermal stability of jute and sawdust after polypyrrole coating.

Abstract:Textile wastewater laden with dyes has emerged as a source of water pollution. This possesses a challenge in its effective treatment using a single functional material. In respond to this technological constraint, this work presents multifunctional cotton fabrics (CFs) within a single, streamlined preparation process. This approach utilizes the adherence of Ag NPs (nanoparticles) using Si binder on the surface of CFs, resulting in Ag-coated CFs through a pad dry method. The prepared samples were characterized using scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray electroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transformation infrared (FT-IR). It was found that the FT-IR spectra of Ag NPs-coated CFs had peaks appear at 3400, 2900, and 1200 cm<sup>-1</sup>, implying the stretching vibrations of O-H, C-H, and C-O, respectively. Based on the EDX analysis, the presence of C, O, and Ag related to the coated CFs were detected. After coating the CFs with varying concentrations of Ag NPs (1%, 2% and 3% (w/w)), they were used to remove dyes. Under the same concentration of 10 mg/L and optimized pH 7.5 and 2 h of reaction time, 3% (w/w) Ag-coated CFs exhibited a substantial MB degradation of 98 %, while removing 95% of methyl orange, 85% of rhodamine B, and 96% of Congo red, respectively, following 2 h of Vis exposure. Ag NPs had a strong absorption at 420 nm with 2.51 eV of energy band gap. Under UV irradiation, electrons excited and produced free radicals that promoted dyes photodegradation. The oxidation by-products included p-dihydroxybenzene and succinic acid. Spent Ag-coated CFs attained 98% of regeneration efficiency. The utilization of Ag-coated CFs as a photocatalyst facilitated treated effluents to meet the required discharge standard of lower than 1 mg/L mandated by national legislation. The integration of multifunctional CFs in the treatment system presents a new option for tackling water pollution due to dyes.

Abstract:In recent years, the massive use of pharmaceuticals has led to the detection of a large number of relevant residues in water. As emerging contaminants, pharmaceuticals residues in the environment pose a major threat to human health and ecosystems. Covalent organic polymers (COPs) possess high stability, uniform pore size, and easy functionalization, which have attracted great attention in water treatment. In this study, a novel covalent organic polymer was successfully studied by a simple synthesis method, combining p-phenylenediamine (Pd) and isophthalaldehyde (Is) via a Schiff-base (referred to PdIs-COP), which was used as an absorbent for the removal of indomethacin from aqueous solutions. The composite was characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area and thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis. The effect of changes in the pH values and the adsorption time on the adsorption capacity was also investigated. The results of this study indicated that the absorbent had a high adsorption capacity for indomethacin. The adsorption capacity of PdIs-COP for indomethacin is 92.86 mg g −1 at pH of five and a contact time of 2 min. This shows that PdIs-COP is a novel material with good affinity for pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:Water scarcity and contamination have emerged as critical global challenges, requiring the development of effective and sustainable solutions for the treatment of contaminated water. Recently, functionalized polymer biomaterials have garnered significant interest because of their potential for a wide range of water treatment applications. Accordingly, this paper highlights the design of a new adsorbent material based on a cellulosic nonwoven textile grafted with two extracted biopolymers. The layer-by-layer grafting technique was used for the polyelectrolyte multi-layer (PEM) biosorbent production. Firstly, we extracted a Suaeda fruticosa polysaccharide (SFP) and confirmed its pectin-like polysaccharide structure via SEC, NMR spectroscopy, and chemical composition analyses. Afterward, the grafting was designed via an alternating multi-deposition of layers of SFP polymer and carrageenan crosslinked with 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). FT-IR and SEM were used to characterize the chemical and morphological characteristics of the designed material. Chemical grafting via polyesterification reactions of the PEM biosorbent was confirmed through FT-IR analysis. SEM revealed the total filling of material microspaces with layers of grafted biopolymers and a rougher surface morphology. The assessment of the swelling behavior revealed a significant increase in the hydrophilicity of the produced adsorbent system, a required property for efficient sorption potential. The evaluation of the adsorption capabilities using the methylene blue (MB) as cationic dye was conducted in various experimental settings, changing factors such as the pH, time, temperature, and initial concentration of dye. For the untreated and grafted materials, the greatest adsorbed amounts of MB were 130.6 mg/g and 802.6 mg/g, respectively (pH = 4, T = 22 C, duration = 120 min, and dye concentration = 600 mg/L). The high adsorption performance, compared to other reported materials, was due to the presence of a large number of hydroxyl, sulfonate, and carboxylic functional groups in the biosorbent polymeric system. The adsorption process fitted well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir/Temkin adsorption isotherms. This newly developed multi-layered biosorbent shows promise as an excellent adsorption resultant and cheap-cost/easy preparation alternative for treating industrial wastewater.

Abstract:A simple technique was developed for the modification of cotton materials that is inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and very effective. Waste Cotton fabrics (WCFs) are loaded with propolis extract (PE) for Cu2+ removal. Then, Cu2+ underwent a pyrolysis process with modified cuttlebone (CB) at 900 °C for 5 h. The surface of the prepared materials was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET, particle sizes, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and zeta potential analysis. The Cu2+ metal ions from an aqueous solution were removed using WCFs/PE, and DLM was subsequently removed using pyro WCFs/PE/Cu/CB. The as-prepared NPs exhibited the face-centered cubic structure of WCFs/PE/Cu/CB with crystallite sizes ranging from 386.70 to 653.10 nm. FTIR spectra revealed that CB was present on the surface of the resulting WCFs/PE/Cu. SEM revealed the dispersion of a uniformly flower-like morphology over a large area. Sorption studies were performed based on parameters that included pH, dose, contact time, and initial concentration. The adsorption isotherm and the kinetic studies of the DLM adsorption process were applied at a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 25 °C using several isotherms and kinetic models. The results revealed qmax (20.51 mg/g) with R2 = 0.97, the Langmuir isotherm that best matches the experimental data. Hence, the Langmuir isotherm suggests that it is the model that best describes sorption on homogenous surfaces or surface-supporting sites with various affinities. The correlation coefficient R2, χ2, adjusted correlation coefficient, and error functions like root mean square (RMSE), normalized root mean square error (NRMES), and mean absolute error (MAE) were used to evaluate the best-fit models to the experimental adsorption data. Moreover, cost estimation for the prepared adsorbent WCFs/PE/Cu showed that it costs approximately 3 USD/g, which is a cheap adsorbent compared to other similar adsorbents reported in the literature. The examined WCFs/PE have significant applicability potential for Cu2+-laden wastewater treatment due to their superior Cu2+ metal ions adsorption capability and reusability. The cytotoxicity and safety study showed that at higher concentrations, it resulted in much less cell viability. Additionally, the removal efficiency of Cu2+ metal ions from synthetic, realistic industrial wastewater using WCFs/PE reached up to 96.29 %, demonstrating good adsorption capability. Thus, there is a huge possibility of accomplishing this and performing well. This study paves the way for the reuse and valorization of selected adsorbents following circular economy principles. Two green metrics were applied, the Analytical Eco-scale and the Analytical GREEnness Calculator (AGREE).
