Abstract:In this paper, a three degrees of freedom (dof) model was established for a double-row self-aligning ball bearing (SABB) system, and was applied to study the dynamic behavior of the system during starting process and constant speed rotating process. A mathematical model was developed concerning stiffness and damping characteristics of the bearing, as well as three-dimensional applied load, rotor centrifugal force, etc. Balls and races were all considered as nonlinear springs, and the contact force between ball and race was calculated based on classic Hertzian elastic contact deformation theory and deformation compatibility theory. The changes of each ball׳s contact force and loaded angle of each row were taken into account. In order to solve the nonlinear dynamical equilibrium equations of the system, these equations were rewritten as differential equations and the fourth order Runge–Kutta method was used to solve the equations iteratively. In order to verify accuracy of the dynamical model and correctness of the numerical solution method, a kind of SABB-BRF30 was chosen for case studies. The effects of several important governing parameters, such as radial and axial applied loads, normal internal, inner and outer races waviness, and number of balls were investigated. These parametric studies led to a complete characterization of the shaft-bearing system vibration transmission. The research provided a theoretical reference for new type bearing design, shaft-bearing system kinetic analysis, optimal design, etc.
Numerical Study for Surface-breaking Crack Detection on A Cylinder Using Laser-generated Ultrasound

Abstract:Laser ultrasonic has been widely investigated for its high spatial resolution, non-contact generation and distant testing. In this study, the laser induced waves on a cylinder is simulated based on an explicit finite element model, and the location of the surface-breaking crack is determined using signal enhancement of surface waves on the cylinder. A feature is extracted based on wavelet packet transform and singularity value decomposition (WPT-SVD) to gauge the depth of surface-breaking crack. The simulation results show that the feature is sensitive to the surface-breaking crack, with an accurate location determined by an enhancement of surface waves when the crack is close to the laser source. This study provides a potential application for testing surface-breaking cracks on the rotating cylindrical component.

Abstract:The surface acoustic wave (SAW) technique is a precise and nondestructive method to detect the mechanical characteristics of the precision-machined surface. The paper is concerned with the effect of the roughness of the machined surface on the dispersion of surface acoustic waves propagating in the precision-machined surface which indicates mechanical characteristics of the machined surface. The finite element method (FEM) is employed by establishing a series of models with different roughness Ra value to analyze influences from different roughness Ra value on surface acoustic wave dispersion. The models are established by applying a combined method based on fractal theory and wavelet analysis. The simulation results showed that the roughness of machined surface will cause the dispersion of surface acoustic wave propagation, the effect varies with the different roughness Ra values. A critical Ra value influencing on the surface acoustic wave propagation exists. Accordingly, that the factor of roughness should be considered in advance or not, the situation can be determined through studying and determining the critical roughness Ra value above mentioned. Consequently, the study has the important meaning regarding the detection for mechanical characteristics of the machined surface.

Abstract:Bearings play a key role in rolling mills, and the uniformity of their lubricant film directly affects the degree of wear of bearings and the safety of equipment. Due to long-term stress, the lubricant film inside the bearing is not uniformly distributed, resulting in uneven wear between the journal and the shaft tile, which increases the potential safety hazards in production. Traditional disassembly inspection methods are complex and time-consuming. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing technology, which has the advantages of nondestructive and adaptable, has become an effective means of assessing the thickness of the oil film in bearings. In this study, an experimental platform for calibrating the lubricant film thickness in bearings was constructed for the first time, and the acoustic characteristics of different thicknesses of the oil film were measured using ultrasonic detection equipment to verify the accuracy of the simulation process. The experimental results show that after discrete Fourier transform processing, the main features of the frequency channels of the reflected acoustic signals of different thicknesses of the oil film are consistent with the finite element simulation results, and the errors of the oil film thicknesses calculated from the reflection coefficients are within 10% of the set thicknesses, and the measurement ranges cover from 5 μm to 250 μm. Therefore, the above method can realize the accurate measurement of the thicknesses of the oil film in bearings.

Abstract:Acoustic Emission (AE) signal has been used pervasively in the extraction of fault feature and the location of damage. The precision of the extraction and location is determined by the propagation characteristics of AE signal in different structures. In this paper, the propagation characteristics of AE wave in the point contact sphere under continuous and transient AE signal is analyzed; a series of experiments under different condition are conducted; based on wave propagation theory, a simulation model is built using the software of ANSYS LS-DYNA. The results of experiments and simulation models reveal that the propagation characteristics-attenuation, frequency features-of AE signal can be manifested clearly in the experiments and are simulated correctly by the simulation model.

Abstract:Non-destructive testing using acoustic waves has emerged as a potential high-impact technology for improving the safety of elastic structures and reducing life-cycle costs. Although this technology has seen a number of signiﬁcant developments, normal operational conditions, such as applied stresses, may hamper its reliability in terms of defects detection. In this context, the nonlinear interactions between the mechanical stress in the materials and the acoustic waves have been studied over the years. The influence of applied stress on acoustic wave propagation is commonly termed acoustoelasticity. It is worth noting that the acoustoelastic effect property is deeply related to the acoustic modes propagation, direction of waves propagation and the material nonlinearity. Thus, understanding the acoustoelastic phenomena may be crucial to fully exploit the benefits of the non-destructive technology. For instance, since damage and applied stress cause changes on wave phase velocity, the damage-induced change should be distinguished from the stress-induced change. Meanwhile, well understanding stress-induced changes can yield the opportunities of stress measurement. To the best of the author's knowledge, there is no review on the subject of acoustoelastic effects. This paper reviews most of the corresponding studies published in recent years, with an emphasis on non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring applications. The main objective of this review paper is to collate the research performed in the area of acoustoelastic effects during the last 23 years, thereby giving a broad perspective on the state of the art in this research field. Moreover, some disputed and obscure understandings of the acoustoelastic effects are discussed, and the relationship between the initial stress and the material symmetry is examined.

Abstract:The aim of this experimental study is to develop an efficient rolling element bearing fault detection technique which could be effectively utilized for easy interpretation of bearing signal data. This paper deals with a new scheme for the diagnosis of localized defects in rolling element bearing based on Wavelet Transform. Vibration signal for healthy bearing, bearing with outer race fault, inner race fault and ball fault were acquired from a bearing test bench fabricated at Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology, Kochi. The vibration signal was acquired using an accelerometer, control card and Data acquisition card. The acquired signal was further processed using a time frequency analysis technique known as Wavelet Transform. The experiments were carried out using different mother wavelets. However, defect features were best obtained using Complex Gaussian Wavelet of order 8, thereby rendering easier interpretation of the analysed data.

Abstract:Within structural health monitoring, the capture and use of acoustic emission is a popular technique for the localisation of damage. In particular, approaches that view localisation as a problem of spatial mapping have performed well when applied to structures containing inhomogeneities such as complex geometrical features or the composition of multiple materials. The maps first require a series of artificial acoustic emission events to be generated across a test specimen, resulting in a mapping that represents difference-in-time-of arrival (dTOA) information. Despite their success, the application of dTOA maps has generally been restricted to applications that can be characterised by Euclidean distance measures. For spherical geometries such as a bearing raceway, this geometrical definition is not representative of the domain. This paper therefore proposes a novel extension to the spatial mapping approach for spherical domains, allowing acoustic emission localisation on a spherical roller bearing. The presented methodology firstly poses the generation of dTOA mappings as a problem of Gaussian process regression. Through a Bayesian framework, the source location likelihood of a real acoustic emission event is then assessed across the surface of the structure. Under the standard Gaussian process convention, the assumption is made that inputs to the kernel can be represented as a function of Euclidean distance. However, as bearings exist in a spherical space, the Euclidean distance will ignore the topological constraints of the bearing and is therefore not an appropriate measure. To bypass this issue, a reduced-rank approach is taken that expresses the covariance function as an approximate eigendecomposition. This approach allows the inputs to be projected onto an eigenbasis, satisfying both the conditions of a valid covariance function, as well as the topological constraints imposed by the geometry of the bearing. The proposed method is then applied to localise AE on a spherical roller bearing that is designed to replicate planetary support bearings that are found in wind turbine gearboxes.

Abstract:The localization of outer raceway defect plays a significant role in malfunction elimination, failure cause analysis as well as the residual life prediction of ball bearings. Based on the nonlinear dynamic model for a ball bearing and the outer raceway defect model considering the ball finite size, this article employs the detailed mathematical derivation and theoretical analysis of the load distribution for the bearing system with an outer raceway defect located at the different angular positions. Therefore, the essential mechanism of the approximate linear relationship between the proposed indices, namely horizontal-vertical synchronized Peak (HVSPeak) and horizontal-vertical synchronized RMS (HVSRMS), and the defect angular position is explained. More importantly, it is theoretically demonstrated that HVSRMS is approximately a cotangent function with the defect angular position as the only variable, which indicates that the index has excellent anti-interference and practicability. In addition, the superiority and necessity of the HVSRMS index can be seen when compared to HVSPeak, RMS, SampEn and Lemple-Ziv. It is validated through simulation and experiment results that HVSRMS index can efficiently diagnose the angular position of outer raceway defect. Finally, the signal denoising methods for HVSRMS are compared and studied, which indicates the direction for subsequent research.

Abstract:Dynamic behavior of rolling elements determines the performance including the extent of skidding and wear in ball bearings, which are influenced by many factors. A comprehensive investigation of dynamic behaviors of high speed ball bearings has been conducted both numerically and experimentally. The dynamic model of high speed ball bearings applicable to a wide range of shaft speeds has been developed, taking into account rheological behavior of lubricating oil, curvature effect, collision between balls and cage and thermal effect. Analyses of ball speeds and interaction forces, as well as sliding speed within ball-raceway contact ellipse have been carried out. The ball-to-race ratio (BRR) of speed has been studied specifically under various operating conditions to reflect the cage speed with high precision. A set of experiments have accordingly been performed on a test rig where optic fiber transducer was employed to obtain the orbital speed of ball. The increase of orbital speed of ball with shaft speed was observed in experiments under different axial load. Numerical results from dynamic simulations also agree with the experimental results based on the investigated ball bearing. The present model is versatile over a wide range of operating conditions.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the effects of waviness on vibration of ball bearings. An experimental analysis method is developed by adopting signal coherence theory of multiple-inputs/single-output (MISO) system. The inputs are waviness excitations of the inner and outer races, and the output is vibration response of the outer ring. Waviness excitation signals are first derived from the manufacturing deviations, and found to be strongly coherent in low frequency range. Virtual input signals are then introduced by the method of orthogonalization. In both cases of vibration acceleration and speed responses, the cumulated virtual input–output coherence function verifies that the first peak region of vibration spectrum is mainly induced by the waviness excitations. In order to distinguish the contributions of the inner and outer races, coherence functions of the virtual inputs with real inputs are calculated, and the results indicate that the outer race waviness contributes more to vibration than the inner race waviness does in the example. Further, a multi-body dynamic model is constructed and employed to frequency response analyses. It is discovered that the waviness induced spectral peak frequency is close to the natural frequency of bearing.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. This article presents an approach to identify naturally developed damage in low-speed bearings using waveform-similarity-based clustering of acoustic emissions (AEs) under fatigue loading. The approach is motivated by the notation that each recorded AE signal from a particular damage is defined by the convolution of the source signal, transfer function of the propagation path and transfer function of the utilised sensor, and may thusly be used to identify consistent AE sources, for example due to crack growth. A sequential clustering procedure is proposed, that is based on waveform cross-correlation. The supporting theoretical background of waveform similarity, rooted in an analytical formulation of waveform propagation and transmission in complex structures, is discussed. The presented methodology is evaluated through application to AE data obtained in a low-speed run-to-failure experiment utilising a densely instrumented purpose-built linear bearing segment. The implemented sensor system comprises arrays of three types of AE transducers, that is relatively low - (40–100 kHz), mid - (95–180 kHz) and high-frequency (180–580 kHz), that are situated on both the raceways and supporting substructures of either side of the bearing. Over the course of 225,000 cycles of extension and retraction, wear has been developed. A total of about ∼2,300,000 AE signals have been recorded. Analysis of the recorded data suggests the rate of degradation increases from around 70,000 cycles onwards. Highly consistent structures of clusters indicative of a localised defect in the raceway have been identified from around 170,000 cycles onwards. These clusters are characterised by hit-rates in the range of 1–2 hits per cycle and an average similarity of 93%, they comprise about half the AE activity for the periods they have been identified for. These results highlight that the proposed cross-correlation-based clustering of AE waveforms and identification of multi-channel formations in said clusters compose a suitable methodology for assessment of damage in low-speed roller bearings.

Abstract:Based on the finite series method, the Gaussian standing or quasi-standing beam is expressed in terms of spherical wave functions and a weighting parameter, which describe the beam shape and location relative to the particle. An expression is derived for the radiation force on a sphere centered on the axis of a Gaussian standing or quasi-standing wave propagating in an ideal fluid. Rigid, fluid, elastic, and viscoelastic spheres immersed in water are treated as examples. In addition, a method is proposed to compute the axial acoustic radiation force when the sphere is translated axially. Results indicate the capability of the proposed method to manipulate and separate spheres based on their mechanical and acoustical properties. The interaction of a Gaussian quasi-standing beam with a sphere can result in periodic axial force under specific operating conditions. The results presented here may provide a theoretical basis for the development of acoustical tweezers in a Gaussian standing beam, which would be useful in micro-fluidic lab-on-chip applications.

Abstract:The dynamic characteristics of thin-walled four-point contact ball bearing with crown-type cage are important to the dynamic performance and motion accuracy of an industrial robot. Considering multi-clearances, dynamic contact and impact relationships of the ball, ring raceway and crown-type cage, a general methodology for dynamic simulation analysis of the bearing is investigated in the proposed work. In accordance with the geometry of torus, the geometric equation of accurate ring raceway is derived and integrated into the three-dimensional ring raceway using user's subroutines. The parameterized and assembled three-dimensional model of the bearing is established using ADAMS's macro-programs. Applying a penalty formulation and a unilateral nonlinear spring–damper model to the bearing, the internal contact interaction is represented as the compliant contact force model using IMPACT function. The multibody contact dynamic models of the bearing are solved by HHT algorithm with ADAMS/Solver. The dynamic results of the contact force, impact force and motion stability of the bearing are discussed under the condition of different loads. The static load distribution and cage's angular velocity of simulation model are verified by the theoretical values. The motion trajectory of outer ring's center is circular with a whirling motion. The sphere-to-partial torus surface contacts (ball–racetrack contact) are always four contact points in the load zone of the bearing. Applying pure radial load or rotating radial load, the impact force of ball-to-cage small pocket contact is much larger than that of radial and axial load combination in the non-load zone of the bearing. As a result of the large impact force of ball-to-cage small pocket contact, the angular velocities of the ball and cage are varying greatly in the non-load zone. The impact force of ball-to-cage big pocket contact is very small. The angular velocity of the ball is always that of pure rolling in the load zone and varying slightly in the non-load zone. The new method can be applied to investigate dynamic analysis and design of high-precision industrial robots with multi-clearances, multi-ball bearings under complex, time-varying working conditions.

Abstract:Wave propagation and vibration state in the sports balls have important effects on the stability in movement and accuracy of hits. In some sports, similar to football and volleyball, the balls are subjected to continuous strong hits from players. In the current study, the wave propagation in a beach volleyball ball under the effect of temperature change, different material characteristics, different thicknesses, and the total mass is investigated. In this regard, the ball is modeled using a spherical shell structure and a higher-order displacement field is considered. The classical theory of elasticity is employed along with Hamilton's principle for the spherical shell. The outcome equations with different boundary conditions are solved by engaging the discrete singular convolution method (DSCM). In addition, the finite element method is used to obtain the modal shape and natural frequency. The formulations and solution method are utilized in different steps of convergence examination, validation, and parametric study to acquire a comprehensive insight into the behavior of beach volleyball balls under the effect of the dynamic loading conditions. In specific, we are more interested in the phase velocity of the ball. The results are presented for different temperature changes and geometrical and material properties.

Monitoring of Lubricant Film Failure in a Ball Bearing Using Ultrasound

Abstract:A lubricant-film monitoring system for a conventional deep groove ball bearing (type 6016, shaft diameter 80 mm, ball diameter 12.7 mm) is described. A high-frequency (50 MHz) ultrasonic transducer is mounted on the static outer raceway of the bearing. The transducer is focused on the ball-raceway interface and used to measure the reflection coefficient of the lubricant in the “contact” ellipse between bearing components. The reflection coefficient characterizes the lubricant film and can be used to calculate its thickness. An accurate triggering system enables multiple reflection measurements to be made as each lubricated contact moves past the measurement location. Experiments are described in which bearings were deliberately caused to fail by the addition of acetone, water, and sand to the lubricant. The ultrasonic reflection coefficient was monitored as a function of time as the failure occurred. Also monitored were the more standard parameters, temperature and vibration. The results indicate that the ultrasonic measurements are able to detect the failures before seizure. It is also observed that, when used in parallel, these monitoring techniques offer the potential to diagnose the failure mechanism and hence improve predictions of remaining life.

Abstract:The increased use of roller bearings in recent years has made it vital to develop techniques for Condition Monitoring (CM) of these valuable assets. Toroidal Roller Bearings (TRB) are one of the recent inventions that has revolutionised some industries because of its unique design. In this study, newly produced TRBs were tested using Acoustic Emission (AE), vibration and temperature, on a specially designed test rig. The AE signal was recorded, processed, and analysed using FFT-based methods to transform from the time domain to the frequency domain, and to specify the Dominant Frequency (DF) of each hit in the signal. The result of the analysis was a layout on the time domain of the DFs of all AE hits along with RMS AE and other parameters, this layout was called DF map. The test was divided into three phases, and the DF bands were divided horizontally into three band groups. The aim is to establish a correlation between the phases and DF bands. Knowing the type of defects that are typical for each phase in the test provided insights to what are the DFs of that type. Promising results can be achieved using this measuring method on other types of bearings.

Abstract:An approach for dynamic modeling of a deep-groove ball bearing with waviness defects in planar multibody system is presented. The deep-groove ball bearing is modeled by introducing a nonlinear force system that takes into account the contact elastic deformations between the ball elements and raceways. Hertzian contact theory is applied to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force. The waviness defect on the bearing’s inner and outer raceways is modeled using a sinusoidal function. A planar slider–crank mechanism containing a deep-groove ball bearing with waviness defects on the raceways is chosen as an example to demonstrate application of the methodologies. Variation of the slider acceleration, crank moment, and bearing equivalent reaction force is used to illustrate the dynamic performance of the mechanism when the effect of the bearing waviness defect is considered. The results indicate that the waviness defect can stimulate vibration of the slider–crank mechanism in its kinematic processes. Such vibrations can lead to noise and affect the stability of the mechanical system motion. For a constant waviness, bearings with different numbers of rolling balls have different amplitudes of vibration of the slider–crank mechanism. Furthermore, the effect of varying the rolling ball number and waviness on the dynamic performance of the slider–crank mechanism is different for bearings in different positions.

Abstract:Under low speeds and heavy loads, water lubricated bearings tend to cause friction-vibration noise, which affects the comfort and acoustic stealth performance of ships. A double-liner bearing structure is designed, which can achieve a breakthrough in the performance of load increase, drag reduction, vibration decrease and noise containment. For the sandwich liner bearings under typical working conditions, the two-way fluid-structure-acoustic interaction hydrodynamic model is constructed. The lubrication performances considering cavitation effects and sound radiation are analyzed. The fluid-structure-acoustic characteristics and sound radiation laws with different material combinations are investigated. Effects of operating conditions on deformation and stress are investigated. The critical rotating speeds when the cavitation effects initially occur are extracted. The results show that the acoustic performances are closely related to the material combinations. The research provides theoretical basis for the design, development and localization for the novel bearings.
