Abstract:Multifunctional hydrogel materials are being increasingly used in wearable sensing devices and biomedical applications, but the comprehensive performance of hydrogel materials must be further developed. To prepare hydrogels with better self-healing properties, biomacromolecules such as sodium alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan were used as raw materials by combining the dynamic imine bonding network formed by both materials with the coordination bonding network formed by acrylic acid and aluminum ions. The double network structure of the hydrogel provides the hydrogel with excellent self-healing properties (up to 127% recovery of toughness after self-healing) and good mechanical properties with a fracture strain of 3787%. Substances with antimicrobial properties in the hydrogel network inhibited the growth of E. coli and S. aureus . In addition, the hydrogel has good electrical conductivity with a conductivity of 1.41 S/m. This study examined multiple properties of the hydrogel and provides a reference for the application of this material in practical application scenarios.

Abstract:The self-healing hydrogel offering intrinsic antibacterial activity is often required for the treatment of wounds because it can provide effective wound protection and prevent wound infection. Herein, antibacterial hyaluronic acid hydrogels with enhanced self-healing performances are prepared by multiple dynamic-bond crosslinking between aldehyde hyaluronic acid, 3, 3′- dithiobis (propionyl hydrazide) and fungal-sourced quaternized chitosan. Due to the formation of these different types of reversible interactions e.g. hydrazone bonds, disulfide bonds, and electrostatic interactions, the hyaluronic acid hydrogels can gel rapidly and exhibit excellent self-healing ability, which can heal completely within 1 h. Furthermore, the hydrogels show good antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus with an inhibition ratio of ~100 % and above 75 %, respectively. Additionally, the hydrogels are cytocompatible, which makes them the potential for biomedical applications e.g. cell culture, tissue engineering, and wound dressing.

Abstract:ABSTRACTChitosan‐based single network hydrogels with imine bonds have excellent self‐healing capability, while poor mechanical properties limit their applications. Here, chitosan‐polyacrylamide‐based double network hydrogels were prepared via in situ free‐radical polymerization of acrylamide in the presence of N‐carboxyethyl chitosan (CEC) and dibenzaldehyde‐terminated telechelic poly(ethylene glycol), which had excellent mechanical properties, self‐healing, and dual‐responsive shape memory abilities. The maximum tensile strength and elongation at break could reach 460 kPa and 4600%, respectively. Meanwhile, owing to the reversibility of imine bonds, elongation and strength at break of hydrogels could heal by 84.2 and 93.2% under alkali stimulation at 35 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the hydrogels also had good shape memory abilities for pH‐stimuli responsiveness of the imine bonds and metal ions stimuli responsiveness of CEC. The prepared chitosan‐based functional hydrogels have great potential application prospects in tissue scaffolds, actuators, and wearable devices. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Abstract:Multifunctional hydrogels that integrate stretchability, adhesion, self-healing, and antibacterial properties may find use in a variety of fields including electronic skin, wound dressings, and wearable devices; however, traditional hydrogels often exhibit short-term adhesiveness, poor mechanical properties, and a lack of antibacterial activity. Herein, a plant-inspired polyacrylamide-soybean protein isolate-pyrogallol/borax (PAM-SPI-P/B) hydrogel has been developed using a facile green method based on dynamic coordination cross-linking between pyrogallol (PG) and borax. The PG-borax dynamic bonds adjusted the network structure of the hydrogels to provide greater structural integrity to the PAM-SPI double network. This hydrogel possessed a high mechanical strength (large elongation up to 760% and compressive strength up to 1.25 MPa at 80% strain), low swelling ratio, and self-healing properties. Inspired by natural polyphenols that contain adhesive molecules, the addition of pyrogallol provided the hydrogel excellent adhesion to various hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates. And with the inhibition of pyrogallol autoxidation due to the borax protection, the hydrogel showed repeatable and durable adhesion over 20 cycles. The obtained hydrogels also exhibited good antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus because they were based on pyrogallol and borax, which have antibacterial properties. Accordingly, we envision that the PAM-SPI-P/B hydrogels have great potential for use in biomimetic tissues and biosensors.

Abstract:Self-healing, stretchable, and moldable hydrogels have a great potential application in tissue engineering and soft robotics. Despite great success in reported hydrogels, it is still a great challenge to construct the moldable hydrogels with an ultrafast self-healing performance. Herein, the composite hydrogels (PBLH) with ultrafast self-healing, stretchable, and moldable properties were successfully constructed by poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), borate (B), ε-poly-L-lysine (EPL), and hyaluronic acid (HA) based on an efficient one-pot method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and rheological measurements confirmed the formation of a dynamic network among PVA, B, EPL, and HA through the cross-linking of dynamic borate bonds, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding. Having fabricated the dynamic network structure, the damage gap of the composite hydrogels can heal within 1 min, presenting an excellent self-healing ability. Simultaneously, the composite hydrogels can be molded into various shapes, and the length of the composite hydrogels can be stretched to 15 times their original length. In addition, the composite hydrogels exhibited an excellent antibacterial property against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Our results illustrated that the composite hydrogels not only retain the advantages of traditional hydrogels but also possess ultrafast self-healing, outstanding stretchable and antibacterial properties, presenting a prospective candidate for constructing biomedical materials.

Abstract:Hydrogels with inherent antibacterial ability are a focus in soft tissue repair. Herein, a series of antibacterial hydrogels were fabricated by quaternized N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] methacrylamide (quaternized P(DMAPMA-DMA-DAA)) bearing copolymers with dithiodipropionic acid dihydrazide (DTDPH) as cross-linker. The hydrogels presented efficient self-healing capability as well as a pH and redox-triggered gel–sol–gel transition property that is based on the dynamic acylhydrazone bond and disulfide linkage. Furthermore, the hydrogels showed good antibacterial activity, biocompatibility, degradability, and sustained release ability. More importantly, the in vivo experiments demonstrated that the hydrogels loaded with mouse epidermal growth factor (mEGF) significantly accelerated wound closure by preventing bacterial infection and promoting cutaneous regeneration in the wound model. Abstract:Hydrogel materials are gradually increasing research in biological aspects due to their unique properties. In order to prepare hydrogels with the potential to be used in clinical wound therapy, the authors prepared a bifunctional hydrogel with antibacterial and self-healing properties. The hydrogel was composed of borax cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), which realizes self-healing between polymers through hydrogen bonds and borate ester bonds. The double cross-linking of hydrogen bonds and borate ester bonds also endows the hydrogel with better mechanical properties (toughness and tensile stress can reach 22.30 MJ/m3 and 70.35 KPa, respectively). On this basis, adding highly stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to the hydrogel can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus. This idea provides the possibility for the application of hydrogels in the process of biological wound healing.

Abstract:Multifunctional hydrogels are typically constructed from multifunctional polymers that are synthesized through tedious multistep processes. Here, a multifunctional poly(ethylene glycol) (MF-PEG) containing phenylboronic acid and phenolic groups at the poly(ethylene glycol) ends was prepared via the one step Ugi reaction, which greatly simplified the preparation of this multifunctional polymer. The resulting MF-PEG can cross-link poly(vinyl alcohol) via dynamic borate ester linkages to quickly generate a self-healing hydrogel under mild conditions (similar to 10 s, pH similar to 7.4, 25 degrees C). This self-healing hydrogel displayed antibacterial properties because of the presence of phenolic groups in the MF-PEG units. The antibacterial capability of this hydrogel was similar to 50 times the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a penicillin-streptomycin combination antibiotic to Escherichia coli and 10 times the MIC to Staphylococcus aureus. This research demonstrated an application of the multicomponent reactions in interdisciplinary fields. It might have important implications to the polymer chemistry and material science communities.

Abstract:Self-healing hydrogels have attracted much attention in the fields of biomedicine and wearable electronic devices. However, traditional hydrogels require external stimulation to induce the repair process. Moreover, the relatively weak mechanical properties and long repair time often limit the depth of the hydrogel application. Nevertheless, in this work, we report an ultrafast-self-healing high-strength hydrogel with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) as the structural support framework, borax/H3BO3 (BB) solution was used for crosslinking and PVA/glycerin as the dynamic covalent bond. The skeletal structure restricts free PVA segments, and small glycerin molecules form dynamic bonds in a limited area, and thus, a hydrogel with a locally ordered structure is formed. In particular, since numerous hydrogen bonds and dynamic covalent bonds are reversibly formed under the limitation of the skeleton, the hydrogel has a high degree of adaptability and can exhibit self-healing (<5 s, 0.74 MPa) under various conditions. Based on this skeletal structure, the positive feedback function can be realized, so that the hydrogel has ultrafast-self-healing ability, excellent mechanical, anti-freezing performances, and electrical conductivity. The physically connected hydrogel thus prepared can be used in various future application fields, including sensor technology, tissue engineering, and flexible electronics.

Abstract:<p>Self-healing hydrogel systems usually suffer from poor mechanical performance stemmed from weaker and reversible non-covalent interactions or dynamic chemical bonds, which hamper their practical applications. This issue is addressed by adopting a double-crosslinking design involving both dynamic Schiff base bonds and non-dynamic photo-induced crosslinking. This leads to the formation of a special topological structure which simultaneously provide good self-healing capability and enhanced mechanical performance (elastic recovery and tensile modulus of 157.4 kPa, close to modulus of native skin). The quaternary ammonium and protonated amino groups can provide superior antibacterial capability; and Schiff base formation between residual aldehyde groups and amino groups on tissue surface contribute to hydrogel's adhesion to tissues (5.9 kPa). Furthermore, the multifunctional hydrogels with desirable mechanical performance, self-healing capability, superior antibacterial capability and tissue adhesion can significantly promote healing of infectious cutaneous wound, tissue remodeling and regeneration.</p>

Abstract:The development of wound dressing materials with both self-healing and antibacterial properties for promoting wound closure is highly desirable in health care. Herein, a smart double-network hydrogel (GS/DPPDH) with promising traits was developed by combining a dynamic Schiff base reaction between dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose (DCMC) and poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) with free radical polymerization. Because of its abundant amino groups, the common antibacterial drug gentamycin sulfate (GS) can be loaded into hydrogels by the formation of Schiff base bonds with DCMC. The slightly acidic wound microenvironment caused hydrolysis of the Schiff base bonds, thus releasing the drug GS on-demand. The prepared hydrogel not only showed good self-healing and injectable properties but also displayed excellent blood compatibility and cytocompatibility. The in vitro antibacterial experimental data proved that the GS/DPPDH had high antibacterial ratios of nearly 90% against both gram-positive ( S. aureus ) and gram-negative ( E. coli ) bacteria. In addition, in vivo assessment in a mouse model of S. aureus -infected full-thickness skin wounds revealed a wound closure ratio of 83.22 ± 2.90% after 7 days of healing, which was significantly greater than that in the gauze (59.78 ± 2.60%) and DPPDH (66.08 ± 0.21%) groups. Taken together, the results showed that the prepared antibacterial double-network hydrogel with injectable, self-healing, and pH-responsive properties exhibits great potential as a dressing material for infected wound healing.

Abstract:Superior flexibility and toughness can be achieved in bioactive hydrogels by the use of a double polymer network with complementary properties. Inspired by this design principle, we here combine polyacrylic acid (PAA) and sodium alginate (SA) to obtain a dual-reinforced double interpenetrating network (d-DIPN) hydrogel. The dual reinforcement involves ionic cross-linking and introduction of SiO2 nanoparticles, which leads to extraordinary improvements in strength and toughness. Compared with the standard PAA hydrogel that offers an elongation of 240% and a breakage stress of 0.03 MPa, the prepared SA(Ca2+)-PAA-SiO2 hydrogel shows an elongation above 1000% and a breakage stress of 1.62 MPa. Moreover, the combination of strong covalent cross-links and weak reversible interactions provides the d-DIPN hydrogel with swelling resistance and self-healing behavior, adhesive abilities, and shape memory performance. Furthermore, we show that the biocompatibility and bone cell proliferation ability of the hydrogels can be improved through a mineralization process despite an observed reduction in breakage strain and stress. Taken as a whole, our work paves the way for the design of strong and tough hydrogels, with potential applications within biomedicine and particularly tissue engineering.

Abstract:The growing list of potential applications of soft materials increases the demand for, among others, new multifunctional hydrogels. We propose a hybrid double-network hydrogel based on synthetic poly(acrylic acid) and alginate, a natural polymer. These polymer networks were double crosslinked: chemically and physically. The ferrous ion was used to catalyze the decomposition of the initiator and later, after its oxidation by the initiator to the ferric ion, was coordinated by the carboxylic groups of the polymer networks and acted as a physicochemical crosslinker. The composition of the hydrogel was optimized to get improved mechanical and electrical properties, and the self-healing ability. The introduction of the coordination bond between Fe3+ and the carboxylic groups of AA and alginate molecules created the ability of self-healing of the hydrogels; they could regenerate without any external stimulus and regain their electrical conductivity and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Self-healing materials are able to repair themselves automatically after external normal damages. This special property of self-healing materials could enhance the service life and ensure more safety while using such materials especially mechanically. Therefore, it has become a new emerging smart material which has the specialty to manage damages instead of traditional materials to avoid it. Self-healing hydrogels based on constitutional dynamic chemistry have received a lot of attentions recently with their intrinsic dynamic structures namely cross-linked polymer networks by dynamic bonds. Dynamic chemistry bonds contain both non-covalent bonds and reversible covalent bonds. Non-covalent bonds (weak effects) include hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces, coordinative bonds, hydrophobic effects, etc. Reversible covalent bonds usually include those chemistry bonds that could be reversible in mild conditions as imine bonds, disulfide bonds, acylhydrazone bonds and so on. Those hydrogels with dynamic cross-linked networks could not only manage external damages and repair themselves as self-healing materials but also gain multi-responsive properties to environmental stimuli. The latter specialty comes from the adptive property of dynamic bonds to react to changes of reaction environments like pH, temperature and chemical reactants, thus building the foundation to develop self-healing hydrogels further into a multi-functional self-adaptive smart soft matter, which is of great significance for research to enrich multi-functional materials. Besides, hydrogel as a soft matter have long been vastly used in biomedical applications due to their superior biocompatibility and resemblance to biological tissues as mainly components (usually more than 70%) of hydrogel are water. They are playing a more and more important role in biomedical applications such as drug delivery systems, cell culture, tissue engineering and manmade biomimetic materials. Developing multi-functional smart soft matter with self-healing property as self-healing hydrogels would be quite helpful to this emerging field with unexpected more biomedical materials. This paper reviews recent works about self-healing hydrogels based on dynamic chemistry and their future biomedical applications. Systems based on multiple-hydrogen bonds, coordination effects, hydrophobic effects, acylhydrazone bonds and imine bonds are specifically discussed.

Abstract:Endowing polymer hydrogels with good self-healing ability can autonomously repair damage with improved reliability. In this work, the benzaldehyde group was first grafted onto a biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) molecular chain by esterification to obtain aldehyde-functionalized PVA (APVA), and the reversible imine bonds were further formed by reacting with amine groups on a quaternized chitosan (HTCC) chain. And thus, the self-healing APVA/HTCC hydrogel was fabricated with such imine bonds as crosslinking points together with hydrogen bonds. Many more imine bonds of hydrogels formed with increasing aldehyde content, resulting in increasing crosslinking density, decreasing average pore diameter and formation of a compact dynamic network, imparting certain mechanical strength and toughness with hydrogels. Furthermore, the healing efficiency of the hydrogel reached as high as 91.7% by self-healing without any external stimulus and its microstructure could be reconstructed after damage, exhibiting rapid recovery and dynamic features. Biocompatible self-healing PVA-based hydrogels exhibited great potential application in biomedical fields, like smart infill biomaterials, tissue engineering scaffolds, etc.

The quaternary ammonium and protonated amino groups can provide superior antibacterial capability, while Schiff base formation between residual aldehyde groups and amino groups on tissue surface contribute to hydrogel’s good adhesion to tissues (5.9 kPa). Furthermore, the multifunctional hydrogel with desirable mechanical performance, self-healing capability, superior antibacterial capability and good tissue adhesion can significantly promote healing of infectious cutaneous wound, tissue remodeling and regeneration.
Antibacterial conductive self-healing hydrogel wound dressing with dual dynamic bonds promotes infected wound healing

Abstract:Highlights • Hydrogels based on double dynamic bonds doped with conductive polymers was synthesized. • These hydrogels exhibit good electrical conductivity and self-healing properties. • These hydrogels exhibit good photothermal antibacterial properties. • These hydrogels significantly promoted the healing of infected skin wounds. In clinical applications, there is a lack of wound dressings that combine efficient resistance to drug-resistant bacteria with good self-healing properties. In this study, a series of adhesive self-healing conductive antibacterial hydrogel dressings based on oxidized sodium alginate-grafted dopamine/carboxymethyl chitosan/Fe 3+ (OSD/CMC/Fe hydrogel)/polydopamine-encapsulated poly(thiophene-3-acetic acid) (OSD/CMC/Fe/PA hydrogel) were prepared for the repair of infected wound. The Schiff base and Fe 3+ coordination bonds of the hydrogel structure are dynamic bonds that can be repaired automatically after the hydrogel network is disrupted. Macroscopically, the hydrogel exhibits self-healing properties, allowing the hydrogel dressing to adapt to complex wound surfaces. The OSD/CMC/Fe/PA hydrogel showed good conductivity and photothermal antibacterial properties under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. In addition, the hydrogels exhibit tunable rheological properties, suitable mechanical properties, antioxidant properties, tissue adhesion properties and hemostatic properties. Furthermore, all hydrogel dressings improved wound healing in the infected full-thickness defect skin wound repair test in mice. The wound size repaired by OSD/CMC/Fe/PA3 hydrogel + NIR was much smaller (12%) than the control group treated with TegadermTM film after 14 days. In conclusion, the hydrogels have high antibacterial efficiency, suitable conductivity, great self-healing properties, good biocompatibility, hemostasis and antioxidant properties, making them promising candidates for wound healing dressings for the treatment of infected skin wounds. Abstract:The wide development of hydrogels had been used in many filed due to the high water-containing and tough three-dimensional structure, however, the poor mechanical and multi-functional properties of hydrogel can be limited in its applications deeply. Herein, the dual responsive self-healing hydrogels with tough mechanical properties were manufactured by dual-physical cross-linking based on biodegradable aliphatic polycarbonate. Choosing the soft and hard segments to design the polymeric hydrogel not only can facilitate the dual-dynamic bonding interactions but also the resilient hydrogels possess robust and controllable mechanical strength (6.51 MPa). Furthermore, the results of swelling and stability tests of the materials indicated that the swelling ability of the biodegradable hydrogels can be regulated by the hydrophilic group, and the maximal swelling ratio in water and the equilibrium water content is 66% and 40%, respectively. It is worth mentioning that the tough hydrogels embrace dual-responsive high efficiency of self-healing ability, and the self-healing time is 2 h at 50 °C or 10 h under pH = 5, suggesting that the obtained hydrogels can respond to temperature and pH value to drive the fracture interface for fast self-healing, which will offer new opportunities for stimuli-responsive materials and wound healing.
