Abstract:Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) have emerged as effective antibacterial agents with unique physiochemical properties. Here, we report antibacterial activity of MgONPs produced by using Acinetobacter johnsonii strain RTN1 against rice pathogen Acidovorax oryzae for the first time. The physico-chemical and optical properties of biogenic MgONPs were elucidated by using UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, EDS, SEM, and TEM. Biogenic MgONPs showed substantial antibacterial activity (35.2 +/- 0.61 mm zone of inhibition) against A. oryzae at 20 mg mL(-1) and significantly reduced cell density (80.83% MIC at OD600) of pathogen in broth culture. The ultrastructure studies revealed the morphological disruptions in MgONPs-treated A. oryzae cells as compared to control. Hence, the MgONPs could be used to formulate a potent nanopesticide for A. oryzae. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Green synthesis of Fe3O4@SiO2@Salg particles for organophosphorus pesticides removal: Mechanisms, biosafety, and application

Abstract:A biosafe magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Salg (GMS) was successfully developed via a simple and economic method. Fe3O4@SiO2 particles were selected as the magnetic core, and they directly interacted with sodium alginate, thus mitigating the use of cross-linking agents. The microstructure, properties, and formation mechanism of GMS were examined using FE-SEM, TEM, VSM, TGA, zeta potential, and FT-IR. The as-developed GMS was used as a desirable adsorbent to remove organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) from water bodies, and the influence of different factors on the removal efficiencies of OPPs was investigated. Optimal preparation conditions were determined, and the excellent removal efficiencies of the 18 OPPs were achieved in this study (80.5%-100% for tap, river, and seawater). After the GMS was recycled eight times, the removal efficiencies of 18 OPPs were maintained at >80%. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm models showed that the adsorption process was accurately fitted with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models. The values of ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were negative, indicating that the OPPs were adsorbed on the GMS spontaneously via an exothermal reaction, and chemisorption was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Overall, the as-developed GMS was biosafe as revealed by cytotoxicity experiments. GMS had good environmental security, stability, and reusability, and it exhibited excellent potential for removing OPPs from aqueous solutions without causing secondary pollution.

Abstract:Water pollution by synthetic dyes, particularly acid black 1, poses a significant environmental challenge. The present study has addressed this issue by synthesizing novel magnesium oxide (MgO) nanocomposites using extracts from Padina sanctae crucis (Psc) and Sargassum hystrix (Sh) algae via a sol-gel process. The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of these nanocomposites in removing acid black 1 dye from aqueous solutions. The synthesized materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results show the successful synthesis of MgONPs and MgO@Sh and MgO@Psc NPs with approximate sizes of 45.64–65.64, 52.14–59.09 and 39.19–58.30 nm. Batch mode experiments were conducted to assess the influence of contact time, pH, and adsorbent dosage on dye removal efficiency. The results demonstrated that at pH 6, increasing the adsorbent dosage from 0.5 to 2 g/L enhanced the dye removal efficiency from 41.6% to 59.1% for MgO@Psc and from 43.4% to 64.1% for MgO@Sh. The Sips isotherm model and intra-particle diffusion kinetic model provided the best fit to the experimental data. The negative values of ΔG° indicated, which the adsorption process is more spontaneous at higher temperatures. This study highlights the potential of MgO@Psc and MgO@Sh nanocomposites as effective adsorbents for acid black 1 removal, offering a promising solution for water purification.

The influence of haemodialysis on haemodynamic measurements using transpulmonary thermodilution in patients with septic shock: an observational study

Abstract:Context Patients with sepsis frequently present with acute renal failure requiring intermittent renal replacement therapy and haemodynamic monitoring. To date, the effect of haemodialysis on PiCCO monitoring has not been determined. Objective To determine the effect of haemodialysis on the measurement of haemodynamic variables using transpulmonary thermodilution. Design Prospective observational study. Setting Medical ICU in a university hospital. Patients Thirty patients with sepsis and acute renal failure undergoing intermittent haemodialysis. Interventions None. Main outcome measures Cardiac index, global end-diastolic volume index and extravascular lung water index measured with or without haemodialysis. Results Significant correlations were found for all variables measured with and without haemodialysis (r = 0.55 to 0.91, P < 0.01). Measurements of cardiac index without and with haemodialysis were significantly different [4.71 vs. 4.18 l min−1 m−2, difference −0.54 (SD 0.70), 95% confidence interval (CI) −0.80 to −0.28; P < 0.01], as were values of global end-diastolic volume index without and with haemodialysis [864.8 vs. 775.3 ml m−2, difference −89.5 (SD 191.8), 95% CI −161.2 to −17.9; P = 0.02]. Measurements of extravascular lung water index without and with haemodialysis did not differ significantly [10.3 vs. 10.0 ml kg−1, difference −0.3 (SD 2.0), 95% CI −1.1 to 0.5; P = 0.42]. Conclusion Although significant correlations were found for cardiac index, global end-diastolic volume index and extravascular lung water index with and without haemodialysis, cardiac index and global end-diastolic volume index were significantly reduced during haemodialysis, but not extravascular lung water index, when measured by the PiCCO system in patients with septic shock. Although differences were small, the variability of within-patient differences may be clinically important and care should be taken in relying solely on such measurements.
Facile synthesis of MgO nanoparticles for effective degradation of organic dyes

Abstract:In the present study, we have synthesized magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles by a facile and cost-effective chemical co-precipitation method with annealing at three different temperatures (350°C, 450°C, and 550°C) for the removal of various organic dyes. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the prepared samples are having sizes below 20 nm and with pure phase. Phase transformation of hexagonal Mg(OH)2 nanoparticles to discretely cubical structured MgO nanoparticles has been observed with increasing the annealing temperatures which is also supported by the TGA/DSC analysis. Mg-O stretching vibration peaks in the range of 400-800 cm-1 obtained by FTIR spectroscopy support the formation of MgO nanoparticles. The observed Raman active bands for the annealed sample at 550°C confirm the formation of the nanocrystalline phase since these bands are typically absent in the bulk MgO as well as in Mg(OH)2. The surface morphology of the as-prepared Mg(OH)2 are aggregated nano-petals which changed into spherical shape for MgO annealed at 550°C as studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The specific surface area of MgO nanoparticles annealed at 550°C using BET isotherms is found to be 37.487 m2g-1. The optical bandgaps of the prepared samples are found to be in the range of 4.4 to 5.1 eV using the Tauc plot. Adsorption studies with a variation of initial brilliant green dye concentration and contact time are carried out along with the studies of adsorption kinetic and isotherm models. Langmuir isotherm model is the most suitable model on the basis of correlation constant with maximum BG dye adsorption capacity onto MgO@550°C which is found to be 63.9 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. Also prepared pristine MgO nanoparticles showed significant photocatalytic performance for the degradation of various dyes; brilliant green (BG: 88.91%), methylene blue (MB: 79.05%), crystal violet (CV: 76.49%), methyl orange (MO: 68.62%), and brilliant blue (BB: 40.44%) under visible irradiation. MgO nanoparticles could be a promising adsorbent and photocatalyst that may be employed in the treatment of effluents from industries.

Abstract:Green synthesis–based metal oxide nanoparticle fabrication is an intriguing topic. The synthesis of MgO nanoparticles (S1, S2, S3) was achieved using the extracts of Madhuca longifolia flowers. Subsequent research revealed that the physical morphology of the nanoparticles was improved as the concentration of the reducing agent (E1, E2, E3) increased. The nanoparticles were then employed for the removal of nigrosine dye (a common water contaminant) through adsorption and photocatalysis. The dye removal process was optimized using the TAGUCHI L25 array from MINITAB software. Among the morphologically improved samples, S3 exhibited the most notable performance in terms of % dye clearance, with a remarkable rate of 99%. S3 was then employed in the investigation of adsorption kinetics and isotherms. The obtained results indicate that the model exhibits a strong match to both the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, as evidenced by the high R 2 value of 0.99 in both cases. Consequently, the Langmuir model can be considered the most suitable choice. This study demonstrates that environmentally sustainable techniques have the capacity to modify the morphology of nanoparticles. Furthermore, the enhancements in morphology have demonstrated significant effectiveness in their intended application. The utilization of MgO nanoparticles in wastewater treatment is supported by their non-toxic nature, sustainable characteristics, and the implementation of straightforward, cost-effective, and efficient manufacturing techniques.

Abstract:Highly efficient and reusable adsorbents for pesticide removal from wastewater have received increasing attention. In this study, Fe3O4 was synthesized using the solvothermal method. Fe3O4/xSiO2 and Fe3O4/xSiO2/ySiO2 were obtained through layer-by-layer silica (SiO2) coating on the surface of Fe3O4. SiO2 coating improved the dispersibility of the adsorbent, which can be separated from water rapidly under the action of the external magnetic field. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was investigated through removing pyraclostrobin from synthetic wastewater. The adsorbent showed the highest adsorption effect at the adsorbent concentration of 1 mg mL-1, at a pH of 7, and the adsorbent time of 110 min. The fitting model of the adsorption process conformed to the second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Fe3O4/xSiO2/ySiO2 nanoparticles was 94.89 mg g-1, and the removal efficiency was about 96% at adsorption equilibrium. Acetone as the eluent can effectively desorb the adsorbent, and the desorbed adsorbent had high reusability. Particularly, the removal efficiency was still greater than 86% after 9 times of reuse. These results provide a reference for designing reusable nanoparticles to effectively absorb pesticides in wastewater.

Abstract:The novel synthesis of MgO from Laurus nobilis L. leaves was prepared using the green synthesis method. It is using direct blending process to decorate MgO/PEG nanocomposite to enhance the photodegradation properties and examine its physical properties using diverse characterization techniques, including XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX, and UV-Vis. X-ray diffraction reveals a cubic phase of MgO with a 37-nm grain size. SEM images confirm spherical nanoparticles with a diameter size of 22.9 nm. The optical energy gap of MgO NPs was 4.4 eV, and the MgO/PEG nanocomposite was 4.1 eV, which made it an efficient catalyst under sunlight. The photocatalytic activity of Rose Bengal (RB) and Toluidine Blue (TB) dyes at 5 × 10-5 mol/l dye concentration indicates excellent degradation efficiencies of 98% and 95% in 120 min, respectively, under sunlight irradiation. MgO/PEG is an excellent candidate nanocomposite for applications of photodegradation and could be used for its potential capability to develop conventionally used techniques.
Facile synthesis of Ag NPs@MgO nanosheets for quantitative SERS-based detection and removal of hazardous organic pollutants

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly precise and non-invasive analytical method known for its ability to detect vibrational signatures of minute analytes with exceptional sensitivity. However, the efficacy of SERS is subject to substrate properties, and current methodologies face challenges in attaining consistent, replicable, and stable substrates to regulate plasma hot spots across a wide spectral range. This study introduces a straightforward and economical approach that incorporates monodispersed silver nanoparticles onto 2-D porous magnesium oxide nanosheets (Ag@MgO-NSs) through an in-situ process. The resulting nanocomposite, Ag@MgO-NSs, demonstrates substantial SERS enhancement owing to its distinctive plasmonic resonance. The effectiveness of this nanocomposite is exemplified by depositing diverse environmental pollutants as analytes, such as antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP), organic dyes like rhodamine 6G (R6G) and methylene blue (MB), and nitrogen-rich pollutant like melamine (MLN), onto the proposed substrate. The proposed nanocomposite features a 2-D porous structure, resulting in a larger surface area and consequently providing numerous adsorption sites for analytes. Moreover, engineering the active sites of the nanocomposite results in a higher number of hotspots, leading to an enhanced performance. The nanocomposite outperforms, exhibiting superior detection capabilities for R6G, MB, and MLN at concentrations of 10-6 M and CIP at concentration of 10-5 M, with impressive uniformity, reproducibility, stability, and analytical enhancement factors (EF) of 6.3 x 104, 2 x 104, 2.73 x 104 and 1.8 x 104 respectively. This approach provides a direct and cost-effective method for the detection of a broad spectrum of environmental pollutants and food additives, presenting potential applications across diverse domains. The detected environmental pollutants and food additives are removed through both catalytic degradation (R6G and MB) and adsorption (CIP and MLN).

Abstract:Water pollution by potentially toxic elements such as cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) is a persistent problem in many parts of the world. It continues to have profound implications for drinking water supplies, wastewater discharge and environmental quality of rivers and lakes. Treatment is routinely needed but is not always accessible or practical for a given location or situation, hence new treatment options are the focus of much research. Nanotechnology has great potential to enhance water purification and decontamination efficiency. Nanomaterials have been shown to efficiently remove organic and inorganic pollutants, including metals, from contaminated waters but they can have a tendency to flocculate and thereby lose removal efficiency. Research aimed at stabilising nanoparticles into matrices such as silica offers a way forward. In this study, mesoporous silica (mSiO2, also referred to as MCM-41) was prepared and loaded with magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NP) to form a MgO-silica composite (MgO-mSiO2) and characterised using UV–Vis, FTIR, XRD, BET, and SEM techniques. The MgO-NP, mSiO2 and MgO-mSiO2 were then evaluated for their Cd and Pb removal capacity across varying conditions of pH, metal concentration, adsorbent: solution volume ratio and contact time. Sorption data were evaluated using the Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin isotherm models. The MgO-mSiO2 was found to have a very high sorption capacity across the conditions tested, with >99% Cd removal across pH range 3–9 and >99% Pb removal across pH range 5–9. When tested at pH 6–7, the MgO-mSiO2 achieved nearly 100% adsorption efficiencies across the contact times tested (15–180 min).
A sustainable approach for the removal of chlorpyrifos pesticide from aqueous phase using novel nano magnetized biochar

Abstract:In last two decades, organophosphate pesticides have become a prominent class of toxic water pollutants. Besides, these are not only poisonous for living beings, but their decomposition is also a time-taking process. For the first time, our study reports the application of nano-magnetized and carbonaceous adsorbents, obtained from orange peels (bio-waste), for the removal of chlorpyrifos from water resources. The -nano magnetized orange peels (NMOPs) were synthesized by the co-precipitation method with the use of iron salts. The competency of orange peels for chlorpyrifos adsorption was further enhanced by converting untreated orange peels (UOPs) into carbonaceous orange peels (COPs). The adsorbents were analyzed with FT-IR, SEM, EDX, XRD and VSM. The peak at 540 cm −1 in FTIR spectra corresponded to the Fe-O bond and confirmed the successful doping of iron salts on orange peels. Biosorption studies carried out by varying different parameters showed that these adsorbents are efficient for the uptake of chlorpyrifos. The effects of adsorbent dose, contact time, chlorpyrifos initial concentration, and pH were investigated to assess the adsorbents' efficiency via biosorption studies. It was noted that the adsorbents showed maximum adsorption with adsorbent dose = 0.4 g, contact time = 50 mins, chlorpyrifos concentration = 150 ppm, pH = 4 and temperature = 30 °C. The adsorption maximum values (q max ) were found to be 68, 108 & 100 mg g −1 for the UOPs, COPs and NMOPs, respectively. Kinetic studies indicate that the removal of chlorpyrifos followed the pseudo-second-order model of adsorption. The adsorption results were effectively described by the Langmuir isotherm and Freundlich isotherm models.

The article delves into the morphology and crystallographic arrangement of MgO nanoparticles, offering insights into their structural attributes. Given the complexity of adsorption processes, the review identifies and analyzes parameters influencing the adsorption efficiency of MgO nanoparticles, such as temperature, pH, contact time, initial concentration, and co-existing ions. The interplay between these parameters and the adsorption capability of MgO nanoparticles emphasizes the importance of optimizing operational conditions. Sugeno fuzzy inference system modeling and DFT calculations for the treatment of pesticide-laden water by newly developed arginine functionalized magnetic Mn-based metal organic framework

Abstract:The uncontrolled utilization of pesticides poses a significant risk to the environment and human health, making its management essential. In this regard, a new arginine functionalized magnetic Mn-based metal-organic framework (Arg@m-Mn-MOF) was fabricated and assessed for the removal of cypermethrin (CYP) and chlorpyrifos (CHL) from aqueous system. The Arg@m-Mn-MOF was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. Various parameters were optimized in a series of batch experiments and the following conditions were found optimal: pH: 4 and 5, contact time: 20 min, adsorbent dosage: 0.6 and 0.8 g L-1 with initial concentration: 10 mg L-1 and temperature: 298 K for CYP and CHL, respectively. The composite attained a maximum removal capacity of 44.84 and 71.42 mg g-1 for CYP and CHL, respectively. The elucidated data was strongly fitted to the pseudo-second-order model of kinetics (R2 > 0.98) and Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.98). Based upon 350 experimental datasets obtained from batch studies and interpolated data, the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was elucidated with R2 > 0.97 (CHL) and > 0.91 (CYP). The adsorption energy (- 11.67 kcal mol-1) calculated by Gaussian software suggests a good interaction between arginine and CHL through H-bonding. The present study's findings suggested the prepared Arg@m-Mn-MOF as a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of pesticides from agriculture runoff.

Abstract:Abstract ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized and applied for the removal of different environmental pollutants in the present study. Combustion method is used for the preparation of ZnO NPs. X-Ray diffraction pattern reveals the crystallinity of the nanoparticles, where SEM and TEM images displayed that ZnO NPs were of size less than 100 nm and nearly spherical in shape. UV–Vis and IR spectra revealed the formation of ZnO NPs. Adsorption and advanced oxidation processes were employed for the removal/degradation of trace elements/pesticide. UV reactor containing 1 UV rod of 11 W (Philips) was used for the photocatalytic degradation of pesticide. ICP–OES and GC–MS techniques were used for the further quantitative analysis of trace elements and OP pesticide—monocrotophos, respectively. The analysis shows the 88% degradation of monocrotophos when subjected to UV light in the reaction chamber for 120 min at a pH 4 when 2 g of nanocatalyst is applied. However, the removal of trace element Arsenic shows linear adsorption as compared to Cd and Se. The removal efficiency of ZnO nanoparticles for Cd and Se was 36% and 64%, respectively, after 120 min. The synthesized nanoparticles are more effective than the commercially available ones.

Abstract:The adsorption of organophosphorus pesticides in aqueous solution was studied in this paper, including acephate, folimat, phoxim, chlorpyrifos, dipterex, and two other pesticides carbendazim and imidacloprid. Sixteen sorbents were used in the experiments, involving zeolites, mesoporous silica and activated carbon, in order to explore how the pore structure, morphology and surface composition of the sorbent affected the liquid adsorption. Among them, MCM-22 zeolite and modified SBA-15 exhibited a high capacity of capturing carbendazim and dipterex in the solution. In order to prepare a new adsorbent with low cost and high efficiency, silica gel was coated with MgO followed by alkali corrosion, in accordance with the principle of printed circuits, to form the micro-porous sorbent with the tailored pore size and surface composition. This modified silica efficiently adsorbed the folimat and rogor in solution as expected, giving a clue for the development of specific sorbent to protect environment.
Magnesium oxide nanoparticles alleviate arsenic toxicity, reduce oxidative stress and arsenic accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract:Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) have been attracted by the scientific community for their combating action against heavy metal stress in plants. However, their role towards the mitigation of arsenic (As) induced toxicity is still obscure. In the present study, MgO NPs were synthesized through the green route and assessed their efficacy towards the reduction of As accumulation and phytotoxicity in As-stressed rice cultivar MTU-1010 under laboratory conditions. Initially, rice seedlings were grown under separate and combined applications of As (10 mg/L) and MgO NPs (0, 10, 50, and 100 mg/L) and further analyzed plant growth attributes and As accumulation in rice seedlings. Characterization of biosynthesized MgO NPs by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed the cubic in shape, and crystalline nature (73.10%) with average size ranges from 17-23 nm. The growth experiment showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in seed germination, seedling growth, photosynthetic and other pigments content, and biomass accumulation in rice seedlings under the combined application of As (10 mg/L) and MgO NPs (50 mg/L) as compared to only As (10 mg/L) treatment. Additionally, As exposure resulted in declined primary metabolites such as soluble sugars and protein. However, the application of MgO NPs exhibited the alleviation of As toxicity through significant (p < 0.05) reduction of As accumulation by 34 and 53% in roots and 44 and 62% in shoots of rice seedlings under 50 and 100 mg/L MgO NPs supplementations, respectively and restored the accumulation of the primary metabolites. Furthermore, MgO NPs demonstrated the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) like hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion (O2•-), through significant (p < 0.05) promotion of non-enzymatic (carotenoid, anthocyanin, flavonoid, and proline) and enzymatic (CAT, POD, and SOD) antioxidant defence under As stress. These findings highlighted the potential of green synthesized MgO NPs towards the mitigation of As contamination in rice plants. However, future study is necessary to unfold the actual mechanisms responsible for the protective effects of MgO NPs and to screen out the optimal dose to be used to formulate a potent nanofertilizer for sustainable rice production in metal-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Industrial usage of various dyes seriously depends on the efficient treatment of industrial effluents. Efficient retention of waste matter using a variety of adsorbent materials has as a result turned into dangerous. In this research article, graphene oxide (GO) cum magnesium oxide (MgO) impregnated kaolin (KA) based chitosan (CS) and pectin (Pect) composite namely GO/MgO/KA/CS-Pect as an adsorbent material for effective methyl orange (MO) and malachite green (MG) removal in aquatic system. The physico-chemical properties like bonding, structural morphology and elemental composition of GO/MgO/KA/CS-Pect were explored with numerous sophisticated instrumental techniques viz., FTIR, SEM, XRD, EDAX and elemental mapping analysis. The influencing parameters of adsorption method, with effect of reaction time, solution pH, dosage, pH zpc , initial MO/MG concentration and temperature were investigated for MO and MG removal under batch scale. The removal of MO and MG rate of the GO/MgO/KA/CS-Pect was incredibly fast and the adsorption kinetic method was driven with intraparticle diffusion (IPD) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic models. The adsorption isotherm strongly well-adapted with Langmuir isotherm and the maximum removal efficiency of GO/MgO/KA/CS-Pect was found to be 45.50 and 42.00 mg/g for MO and MG respectively within 40 min. The MO and MG uptake by GO/MgO/KA/CS-Pect was majorly owing to chemical adsorption namely electrostatic adsorption, hydrogen bonding and π-π interaction mechanism. The prepared GO/MgO/KA/CS-Pect was productively regenerated with absolute ethanol and could be repetitively reused. This exploration reveals the feasibility and selectivity of the GO/MgO/KA/CS-Pect as genuine adsorbent material for removal of MO and MG from the aquatic system.

Abstract:People are vulnerable to mosquito-borne infections in tropical and subtropical climate countries. Due to resistive issues, vector control is an immediate concern in today's environment. The current study describes the synthesis of magnesium oxide by four different approaches including green, microwave, sol-gel, and hydrothermal methods. The synthesized magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) techniques. The FT-IR studies reveal the presence of functional groups in the synthesized nanoparticles. The structural and morphological studies were investigated using XRD and HRSEM. EDAX reveals the presence of Mg and O in the prepared samples. The synthesized MgO NPs were screened for antibacterial studies against Gram-positive strains, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus, two Gram-negative cultures, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, using different concentrations. The results indicated excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria at 50 mg/mL hydrothermally produced MgO nanoparticles, with a maximal zone of inhibition (ZOI) of 5 mm for S. aureus, 7 mm for E. faecalis, and 6 mm for K. pneumoniae. The ZOI of E. coli was found to be the greatest at 9 mm when 50 mg/mL sol-gel-produced MgO nanoparticles were used. The synthesized MgO nanostructures were tested against fourth-instar larvae of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, and the hydrothermally synthesized MgO nanostructures exhibited better results when compared with other methods of synthesis. The reports show that A. aegypti and A. albopictus mortality rates were reported to be the lowest with green-manufactured MgO nanoparticles (7.5 g mL-1) and the highest with hydrothermally synthesized MgO nanoparticles (120 g mL-1). The research indicates that MgO nanostructures are promising drugs for antibacterial and mosquitocidal larvae control properties.
