Abstract:Exergoeconomic analysis plays an important role in finding ways to improve the performance of a complex thermal system. In this article, exergoeconomic analysis had been performed for a combined cycle system, which was proposed by authors, utilizing associated gases (blast-furnace gas, coke oven gas and sintering waste gas) from steel production process based on structural theory of thermoeconomics. Three exergoeconomic indexes (the cost difference, the relative cost difference and the exergoeconomic factor) were calculated to evaluate the thermoeconomic performance of each component. Moreover, the influences of the decision variables (the pressure ratios and the isentropic efficiencies of air compressor and blast-furnace-gas compressor, the temperature of combustion products entering gas turbine, and the isentropic efficiencies of gas turbine and steam turbine) and the capital costs (equipment purchase and fuel) on the unitary exergetic and monetary costs of production were also investigated. The analysis shows the deep relations of the unitary costs to the changes in these parameters and the superiorities of the proposed system emerging gradually through comparing with other systems (the combined cycle system with afterburning chamber in heat recovery steam generator, the combined cycle system without afterburning combustion, and the power generation system of steam turbine).

Abstract:Because of the fossil fuels crisis in recent years, efficient working of power producing cycles has gained considerable importance. This study presents a detailed exergoeconomic analysis of a proposed combination of a gas turbine (GT), a steam Rankine cycle (SRC), and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), which are coupled together to obtain the maximum heat recovery of the GT exhaust gas. The proposed cycle was analyzed from both thermodynamic and economic viewpoints. The exergy efficiency and product cost rate of the introduced cycle were optimized simultaneously using multiobjective optimization with seven decision variables, including steam turbine inlet pressure and temperature, ORC turbine inlet pressure, ORC and steam turbine back pressures, and pinch point of heat exchangers. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the steam turbine back pressure and inlet pressure had the highest impact on product cost rate and exergy efficiency, followed by ORC turbine inlet pressure and back pressure. Also, the exergoeconomic analysis showed that the combustion chamber had the highest sum of exergy destruction costs and investment costs; more attention should thus be paid to its design procedure. Under the design conditions, the exergy efficiency of 40.75% and product cost rate of 439 million $/year could be achieved. Thermoeconomic analysis is performed on a combined GT, ST, and ORC cycle. Performing sensitivity analysis using seven selected parameters. Optimization of the exergy efficiency and product cost rate by means of GA. Steam turbine back pressure has the highest effect on both objective functions.

Abstract:This study describes the theoretical and experimental analysis of an MW-level three-shaft gas turbine. A thermodynamic-cycle calculation method of a three-shaft gas turbine with a hybrid cooling model is developed. Certain test data from the real engine, such as power output, fuel flow rate, overall efficiency, power turbine inlet and outlet temperatures, rotational speeds of the gas generator high-pressure shaft and low-pressure shaft and air flow rate, are obtained via experimental research. The empirical parameters in the proposed calculation method and the cooling model are revised via comparison between the calculated results and the test data. The effectiveness of the thermodynamic cycle performance analysis method of the three-shaft gas turbine and the cooling model is also verified.Based on the calculation method, further investigation of the characteristics of the gas turbine is performed on a wide load range when the power turbine operates at a fixed physical speed. The results show that a variable-angle nozzle significantly affects the performance of the gas turbine. The surge margin of the low-pressure compressor is also shown to be particularly important when the gas turbine operates at a high gas temperature with a more open variable-angle nozzle; also, due to the limitations imposed by the temperature control line, the high-pressure compressor always have an adequate surge margin. Throughout the operation range, the low-pressure and high-pressure turbines have high isentropic efficiencies; however, opening or closing the nozzle would decrease the isentropic efficiency of the power turbine compared with the ideal design condition. When the power output is constant, closing the nozzle causes the turbine inlet temperature to increase, thus increasing the efficiency of the gas turbine. Therefore, the optimal operating line under a wide range of loads is obtained by combining the adjustment of the variable-angle nozzle and the gas temperature. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Gas turbines typically employ combined cycles owing to high exhaust temperature; however, the complex bottoming cycle often constrains system flexibility. In this study, we explored the different methods for utilizing exhaust heat in gas turbine cycles, and found that the residual heat absorption efficiency of the bottoming cycle and power consumption of the compression process were the main factors affecting heat recovery. The closer the approach to isothermal compression, the lower the power consumption of the compression process. Intercooling, a typical approach toward isothermal compression, was primarily constrained by declines in pressure. To address this constraint, we developed a new approach toward coupling the multistage compressed mass storage process, significantly reducing losses in pressure. The resultant decline in pressure during intercooling ranged from 0.01–0.1 MPa, while in this new approach, the decline during heat transfer was < 0.001 MPa. This is a theoretical breakthrough. Meanwhile, coupling the multistage compressed mass storage process increased the thermal efficiency of the cycle by 1.34–4.5 % compared to the one-stage intercooling cycle, and by 2.64–8 % compared to the two-stage intercooling cycle. This study thus provided a foundation for constructing gas turbine cycles using direct recuperation.

Abstract:Improved operational flexibility of gas turbines can play a major role in stabilising the electric power grid, by backing up intermittent renewable power. Gas turbines offer on-demand power and fast dispatch of power that is vital when renewable power reduces. This has brought about increasing demand to improve the ramp-up rate of gas turbines. One approach is through the injection of compressed air from energy storage or an auxiliary compressor. This method is the focus of the present work, which shows for the first time, the implications and limits of compressor air injection in a high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics model (CFD). The 3D multi-stage model of the compressor was developed in ANSYS CFX v19.2, while the boundary conditions related to the injection cases have been obtained from a corresponding 0D engine model. The upper limits to air injection determine how much air can be injected into the engine, providing indicative values of power augmentation and ramp-up rate capabilities. These have been previously addressed by the authors using 0D models that do not consider the compressor aerodynamics in great detail. The CFD study has shown that for power augmentation, 16% of compressed air (based on compressor exit) is allowed based on the onset of stall. It also shows that increasing air injection amplifies losses, blockage factor and absolute velocity angle. Also, about 30% of the blade span from the hub is dominated by a rise in the total pressure loss coefficient, except the outlet guide vane for which separation occurs at the tip. For the ramp-up rate analysis, up to 10% air injection is shown to be sustainable. The work shows that the improvements in the 0D analytical engine model are plausible, in addition to demonstrating similar limits at different ambient temperatures.

Abstract:A small gas turbine performance modeling and testing project has been completed as part of a DSTO research program. The main objective of the program was to enhance capability in understanding and modeling the thermodynamic and performance characteristics of gas turbine engines. The secondary objective of the program was development of a simple, low-cost test apparatus for basic thrust augmentation technologies and infrared suppression studies.Engine performance modeling was conducted using commercial software (Gasturb) and an in-house developed code. Various techniques were used in predicting component performance which included scaling of published performance data, use of standard empirical performance models, mean-line and through flow codes and detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. A comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of each method was made and compared with engine test data.The AMT Olympus HP turbojet engine was used as the test engine. The engine was instrumented using a bell mouth to measure mass flow rate, load cell to measure thrust, tachometer to measure engine rotational speed, thermocouples to measure flow total temperature and pressure transducers to measure wall static pressure at various stations along the engine.A pair of Olympus engines were tested for comparison during baseline testing, with consistent results between the two. The first engine was fully instrumented and used in all of the tests. This engine was used to test the engine standard operating line tests to determine bulk performance and establish compressor operating line. Tests were repeated and error analysis conducted to ensure repeatability and validity of the data. The second engine was used as a control engine with only the OEM supplied instrumentation, thrust and bell mouth used for benchmarking purposes. The data from both engines have been compared with the engine performance model and OEM data.A number of other tests were completed to “stress” the engine and shift its operating line closer to the compressor stall line. This was accomplished through various types of exhaust blockage. Stall behaviour was clearly evident in the initial commissioning tests where a large nozzle blockage resulted in engine stall and incomplete start-up. Engine performance and compressor map results from the tests have been compared to the engine performance model with good agreement.Copyright © 2013 by Commonwealth of Australia

Abstract:Auxiliary systems, such as regeneration and intercooling, have been integrated with the primary gas generator to improve power production and fuel economy in modern gas turbine power plants. Implementing these techniques in turbine engines is challenging due to size, weight, and complex flow patterns. A solution is to use a turboprop engine with a smaller mass flow rate and simpler gas paths. The current study involves the numerical analysis of performance parameters namely, specific power (SP), thermal efficiency ( η ), and enthalpy based specific fuel consumption (EBSFC) of a turboprop engine using thermodynamic parameters namely, pressure ratio (PR), nozzle pressure ratio (NPR), turbine inlet temperature (TIT), regeneration efficiency (R), and intercooling efficiency (E). The results prove that the introduction of regeneration and intercooling showed significant improvement in the power developed, and reduced fuel consumption.

Abstract:Gas turbine power plants are popular for offshore power generation due to high power density and their reliability. However, growing usage of renewable energies put gas turbines in a load following backup operation. These power plants suffer part-load efficiency losses when operating at less than full capacity, resulting in higher carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission from natural gas combined cycles or higher consumption of carbon-free fuels in decarbonized gas turbines. In this article, a solution is proposed for enhancement of power plant part-load thermal efficiency based on exhaust gas recirculation in the gas turbine cycle. Recirculating exhaust gas into the gas turbine have been studied by several researchers and engineers due to its benefit for carbon-free combustion and carbon capture mechanisms. The proposed operation strategy is evaluated for single-spool and two-spool gas turbines operating jointly with a steam bottoming cycle harvesting the waste heat for further power production. In the suggested strategy, eliminating the necessity to cool down the recirculated gas resulted in less equipment footprint for the power plant which makes it more favorable for offshore applications. An in-house design and simulation tool is developed for evaluating gas turbines with modern gas recirculating systems and a flexibility in operation with carbon-free fuel mixtures. The enhancement in efficiency boost, emission reduction, and fuel consumption is quantified demonstrating the improvements with the proposed solution.

Abstract:Climate science shows that the limitation of global warming requires a rapid transition toward net-zero emissions of green house gases on a global scale. Expanding renewable power generation in a significant way is seen as an imperative measure within this transition. To compensate for the inherent volatility of wind- and solar-based power generation, flexible and dispatchable power generation technologies such as gas turbines are required. If operated with CO2-neutral fuels such as hydrogen or in combination with carbon capture plants, a green house gases-neutral gas turbine operation can be achieved. An effective leverage to enhance carbon capture efficiency and a possible measure to safely burn hydrogen in gas turbines is the partial external recirculation of exhaust gas. By means of a model-based analysis of a state-of-the-art industrial gas turbine, this study initially assesses the thermodynamic impact caused by a fuel switch from natural gas to hydrogen. Although positive trends such as increasing net electrical power output and thermal efficiency can be observed, the overall effect on the gas turbine process is only minor. In a following step, the partial external recirculation of exhaust gas is evaluated and compared both for the combustion of natural gas and hydrogen, regardless of potential combustor design challenges. The influence of altering working fluid properties throughout the whole gas turbine process is thermodynamically evaluated for ambient temperature recirculation and recirculation at an elevated temperature (303.15 K). A reduction in thermal efficiency as well as non-negligible changes in relevant process variables can be observed. These changes are more distinctive at a higher recirculation temperature.
Identification of Potential Efficiency Opportunities in Internal Combustion Engines Using a Detailed Thermodynamic Analysis of Engine Simulation Results

Abstract:Current political and environmental concerns are driving renewed efforts to develop techniques for improving the efficiency of internal combustion engines. A detailed thermodynamic analysis of an engine and its components from a 1st and 2nd Law perspective is necessary to characterize system losses and to identify efficiency opportunities. We have developed a method for performing this analysis using simulation results from commercially available engine-modeling software packages such as WAVE® from Ricardo, Inc., and GT-Power™ from Gamma Technologies, Inc. Results from the simulation are post-processed to compute thermodynamic properties such as internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, and availability (or exergy) which are required to perform energy and availability balances for the system. This analysis is performed for all major engine components (turbocharger, intercooler, EGR cooler, etc.) and for the engine as a whole as a function of crank angle over an entire engine cycle. With this information, we are able to identify potential efficiency opportunities as well as guide engine experiments for exploring new technologies for recovering system losses.

Abstract:Introduction— Gas turbines play a key role in the power generation industry. The UPME (Unidad de Planeación Minero-Energética), in its monthly report of the generation variables and the Colombian electricity market, quoted data from December 2016, highlights that the net effective capacity in megawatts is 2,093 and represents about 12.61% of the total energy capacity through gas thermal plants. During hot seasons, the performance of the turbines is affected by the elevated air temperature flowing into the cycle, because the power output depends on the air mass flow through the compressor, the mass flow decreases as the temperature increases, resulting in a decline in efficiency and power generation. Objetivo— A gas turbine in open cycle was analyzed based on the first and second law of thermodynamics, irreversibilities were considered using exergy as the criterion to establish the overall performance of the system. Methodology— An alternative analysis was proposed modifying the ideal Brayton cycle, humidity of the air, the height above sea level, and the detailed molar composition by component were considered. Furthermore, the heat adding process was replaced by an adiabatic and isobaric combustion progression with a subsequent cooling by means of an adiabatic mixture of ideal gases with the compressor discharged air to condition the incoming flow mixture of gases to the turbine aimed to maintain the maximum allowed temperature controlled. Results— The simulation was developed in the software EES (Engineering Equation Solver) and the free software CEA (Chemical Equilibrium with Applications) from NASA was used to validate results for the combustion process, under the criterion of chemical equilibrium. Few investigations about inlet cooling methods for gas turbines have supported the implementation of such kind of technologies by means of exergy balance, which is the main goal of this research.
Conventional and Advanced Exergetic Analysis for the Combined Cycle of Power Plant With Gas Turbine of a Refinery

Abstract:Abstract This article shows the results of the performance study of a combined cycle plant made up of a Siemens STG-800 gas turbine and a MACCHI heat recovery boiler (HRSG) designed to produce 47.5 MW of electricity and 81908 kg / h of steam operating under ISO conditions (15 ° C and 60% relative humidity and 1 atm), the system is part of the steam and electric power generation section of a crude oil refinery in the city of Cartagena de Indias. The objective of this research is to quantify the real inefficiencies in each of the equipment applying conventional and advanced exergetic analysis, to achieve this the investigation has been ordered as follows: first, the basic thermodynamics at the equipment boundaries is defined, define performance parameters that compare the adjustment of the thermodynamic model with the values provided by the manufacturer, the rate of exergy destruction and exergy efficiency are obtained from conventional analysis, advanced exergetic analysis allows obtaining avoidable, unavoidable, endogenous, exogenous exergies and the combined, finally, the mexogenous exergetic analysis allows to know the amount of energy that is lost due to the interactions between the equipment. The thermodynamic model is adjusted with an average error of 2% using design KPIs such as net power, heat rate and thermal efficiency, it was obtained that the exergy destruction reaches 83.5MW, 15% is avoidable and the 8% is avoidable endogenous, the mexogenous analysis shows that inefficiencies in the compressor refer to all equipment, by focusing efforts on improving its conditions, up to 25% of the total exergy destruction can be recovered.

Abstract:Considering energy conversion efficiency, pollution emissions, and economic benefits, combining biomass with fossil fuels in power generation facilities is a viable approach to address prevailing energy deficits and environmental challenges. This research aimed to investigate the thermodynamic and exergoeconomic performance of a novel power and cooling cogeneration system based on a natural gas–biomass dual fuel gas turbine (DFGT). In this system, a steam Rankine cycle (SRC), a single-effect absorption chiller (SEAC), and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) are employed as bottoming cycles for the waste heat cascade utilization of the DFGT. The effects of main operating parameters on the performance criteria are examined, and multi-objective optimization is accomplished with a genetic algorithm using exergy efficiency and the sum unit cost of the product (SUCP) as the objective functions. The results demonstrate the higher energy utilization efficiency of the proposed system with the thermal and exergy efficiencies of 75.69% and 41.76%, respectively, while the SUCP is 13.37 $/GJ. The exergy analysis reveals that the combustion chamber takes the largest proportion of the exergy destruction rate. The parametric analysis shows that the thermal and exergy efficiencies, as well as the SUCP, rise with the increase in the gas turbine inlet temperature or with the decrease in the preheated air temperature. Higher exergy efficiency and lower SUCP could be obtained by increasing the SRC turbine inlet pressure or decreasing the SRC condensation temperature. Finally, optimization results indicate that the system with an optimum solution yields 0.3% higher exergy efficiency and 2.8% lower SUCP compared with the base case.

Comparative analysis of turboshaft engines thermodynamic cycles calculation

Abstract:A brief overview of domestic and foreign programs for calculating the thermodynamic cycle of the gas turbine engine operation is provided. The focus is on comparing GasTurb and Tyumen Motor Builders methods. Configuration files are provided for NASA Chemical Equilibrium with Applications program to calculate the thermodynamic properties of methane, air, and combustion products. The main provisions of the procedure for calculating thermal schemes of turboshaft engines are presented. Using the example of a three-shaft ship-type gas turbine engine UGT 15000, the potentials for increasing efficiency by 4-7% (abs.) and reducing CO2 emissions by 20% are shown due to the installation of an intercooler during compression of the working fluid. According to the results of comparison of GasTurb and Tyumen Motor Builders programs, the correspondence of the main parameters within the permissible measurement error is established. Based on published data on UGT 15000 (DG90), the parameters of the thermodynamic cycle were identified, including the polytropical efficiency of each node and cooling rates (ISO 2314). It has been shown that due to the isotermo-adiabatic cycle of V. V. Uvarov, already in the first approximation, without extreme parameters of the thermodynamic cycle, the characteristics of the V generation of the gas turbine engine can be implemented based on affordable and economical technologies of the II-IV generation (using equiaxed nickel superalloys, cyclone or convective-film cooling of high-pressure turbine vanes and blades). The Tyumen Motor Builders methodology program is open-source and has proven itself positively in the service-pack development for engines DG90/DN80/DU80 (III-IV generation) and the new ТМ16М2 engine construction.

Abstract:With the aim to recover the exhaust heat of internal combustion engine efficiently, a novel supercritical CO2 (S–CO2) power cycle is proposed on the basis of recompression cycle configuration. The corresponding thermodynamic models are established to analyze the energetic and exergetic performances of the system. The effects of turbine inlet temperatures and system pressures are investigated. Thereafter, in order to output the maximum net work, genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to optimize these key parameters. Under design conditions, the calculated results indicate that the thermal efficiency and the exergy efficiency of the system can reach up to 35.86% and 67.90% respectively. Furthermore, as the inlet temperature of high pressure turbine increases, cycle efficiency increases while output work decreases. However, for the effect of inlet temperature of low pressure turbine, cycle efficiency and output work increase with the increase of temperature. As for the intermediate pressure of this system, there exist pressures to get the maximum net work and cycle efficiency. Based on GA optimization, an optimal combination of system parameters is obtained. The corresponding maximum cycle power is 39.49 kW, and the recovery efficiency of waste heat can reach up to 74.83%.

Abstract:Worldwide, the growing demand for energy has been largely met through power cycles utilizing fossil fuels. Combined cycles, which integrate a gas turbine with a steam cycle, prove to be the best alternative due to their power generation capacity and high efficiencies. This efficiency is primarily attributed to the ability to harness exhaust gases to generate steam in the heat recovery boiler, allowing additional power generation through the steam turbine. Currently, there is a quest for the integration of low-temperature power cycles to maximize the utilization of residual thermal energy flows for power generation. Therefore, this work conducts an exergetic optimization of a power trigeneration system aimed at maximizing exergetic efficiency. This system includes a gas turbine and a steam cycle coupled with three different configurations of the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC): a simple ORC, a supercritical ORC, and an ultracritical ORC. The ORC configurations are analyzed using eight organic working fluids, namely R1234yf, R290, R134a, R1234ze, R152a, R600a, R245fa, and R123. The results show that the maximum exergetic efficiency is achieved by using R152a in the ultracritical ORC configuration coupled with the combined cycle, achieving an exergetic efficiency of 55.79%. Furthermore, the maximum power generated is attained by the steam cycle with 85,600.63 kW and 3101.21 kW for the ultracritical ORC.

Abstract:The performance and design criteria of air powered multistage turbines are studied thermodynamically in this paper. In-house code is developed in the C++ environment and the characteristics of four-stage turbines with inter-heating are analyzed in terms of maximum thermal efficiency, maximum exergy efficiency and maximum work output over the inlet temperature range of 293 K–793 K with inlet pressure of 70 bar. It is found that the maximum thermal efficiency, maximum exergy efficiency and maximum work output are 62.6%, 91.9%, 763.2 kJ/s, respectively. However, the thermal efficiency, exergy efficiency and work output are not equivalent for the four-stage radial turbine. It is suggested that at low working temperatures both maximum exergy efficiency and maximum work output can be used as the design objective, however, only maximum work output can be used as the design objective for the four-stage radial turbine over the working temperature range in this work.

Abstract:This study investigates the possibility of achieving 65 % efficiency in a gas turbine combined cycle. Several options to realize it were compared. A sensitivity analysis was performed for the latest H-class gas turbine in a simple cycle to quickly and easily predict the performance variation due to changes in each design parameter. When each design parameter was improved by the same percentage, the combined cycle efficiency was maximized by the improvement in turbine efficiency. The degree of increase in the combined cycle power was the largest when improving the turbine inlet temperature (TIT). To realize the turbine industry’s goal of 65 % efficiency in the combined cycle, the efficiency of the compressor and the turbine should be improved by 2 %, the TIT should be increased by 100 °C, and the pressure ratio should be increased from 23 to 32 in comparison to current H-class gas turbines. The possibility of improving the cycle performance was also investigated through modifications of the gas turbine cycle, such as reheating, inter-cooling, and recuperation. When reheating and recuperation were adopted simultaneously, a cycle efficiency of 65 % was possible with an increase of 1 % in both the compressor and turbine efficiencies, which is a moderate and practical improvement.

Abstract:This paper investigates a “basic” Chemically Recuperated Gas Turbine (a “basic” CRGT is defined here to be one without intercooling or reheat). The CRGT is of interest due to its potential for ultralow NOx emissions. A computer code has been developed to evaluate the performance characteristics (thermal efficiency and specific work) of the Basic CRGT, and to compare it to the steam-injected gas turbine (STIG), the combined cycle (CC) and the simple cycle gas turbine (SC) using consistent assumptions. The CRGT model includes a methane-steam reformer (MSR), which converts a methane-steam mixture into a hydrogen-rich fuel using the “waste” heat in the turbine exhaust. Models for the effects of turbine cooling air, variable specific heats, and the real gas effects of steam are included. The calculated results show that the Basic CRGT has a thermal efficiency higher than the STIG and simple cycles but not quite as high as the combined cycle.

Abstract:This study focused on exergo–conomic and parametric analysis for Taji station in Baghdad. This station was chosen to reduce the emission of waste gases that pollute the environment, as it is located in a residential area, and to increase the production of electric power, since for a long time, Iraq has been a country that has suffered from a shortage of electricity. The main objective of this work is to integrate the Taji gas turbine's power plant, which is in Baghdad, with the Rankine cycle and organic Rankine cycle to verify waste heat recovery to produce extra electricity and reduce emissions into the environment. Thermodynamic and exergoeconomic assessment of the combined Brayton cycle–Rankine cycle/Organic Rankin cycle (GSO CC) system, considering the three objective functions of the First- and Second-Law efficiencies and the total cost rates of the system, were applied. According to the findings, 258.2 MW of power is produced from the GSO CC system, whereas 167.3 MW of power is created for the Brayton cycle (BC) under the optimum operating conditions. It was demonstrated that the overall energy and exergy efficiencies, respectively, are 44.37% and 42.84% for the GSO CC system, while they are 28.74% and 27.75%, respectively, for the Brayton cycle. The findings indicate that the combustion chamber has the highest exergy degradation rate. The exergo–economic factor for the entire cycle is 37%, demonstrating that the cost of exergy destruction exceeds the cost of capital investment. Moreover, the cost of the energy produced by the GSO CC system is USD 9.03/MWh, whereas it is USD 8.24/MWh for BC. The results also indicate that the network of the GSO CC system decreases as the pressure ratio increases. Nonetheless, the GSO CC system's efficiencies and costs increase with a rise in the pressure ratio until they reach a maximum and then decrease with further pressure ratio increases. The increase in the gas turbine inlet temperature and isentropic efficiency of the air compressor and gas turbine enhances the thermodynamic performance of the system; however, a further increase in these parameters increases the overall cost rates.
