Abstract:We describe quasi-phase-matched nonlinear interactions in materials that possess 4 symmetry, such as GaAs. 4 symmetry together with curved propagation geometries produce quasi phase matching (QPM) without need of external domain inversions. To improve efficiency of nonlinear optical mixing, 4 -QPM can be combined with resonant microcavities such as whispering-gallery-mode microdisks. All interacting waves must be resonant with the cavity, which leads to stringent tuning requirements. We show tuning behavior for second-harmonic generation in a GaAs microdisk cavity and estimate that, with milliwatt-level external pumping, approximately 0.1% power-conversion efficiency can be obtained with negligible higher-order nonlinear effects.

Abstract:We present the direct observation of four-wave mixing over a detuning range of more than 3 THz in an InGaAs/AlInAs strain-compensated quantum cascade laser (QCL) amplifier emitting at 4.3 μm by simultaneous injection of a single mode QCL and a broadly tunable source. From its intensity, we determine a χ(3) of 0.9 × 10−15 m2 V−2, in good agreement with transport model simulations based on the density matrix approach. This four-wave-mixing mechanism is an important driving factor in mode proliferation occurring in connection with the recent demonstration of comb generation in broadband QCLs.

Abstract:In recent years the physics of two-dimensional semiconductors was revived by the discovery of the class of transition metal dichalcogenides. In these systems excitons dominate the optical response in the visible range and open many perspectives for nonlinear spectroscopy. To describe the coherence and polarization dynamics of excitons after ultrafast excitation in these systems, we employ the Bloch equation model of a two-level system extended by a local field describing the exciton-exciton interaction. We calculate four-wave mixing signals and analyze the dependence of the temporal and spectral signals as a function of the delay between the exciting pulses. Exact analytical results obtained for the case of ultrafast ($\delta$-shaped) pulses are compared to numerical solutions obtained for finite pulse durations. If two pulses are used to generate the nonlinear signal, characteristic spectral line splittings are restricted to short delays. When considering a three-pulse excitation the line splittings, induced by the local field effect, persist for long delays. All of the found features are instructively explained within the Bloch vector picture and we show how the exciton occupation dynamics govern the different four-wave mixing signals.

Abstract:Theoretical and experimental studies of phase-modulation effects in degenerate four-wave mixing are presented in this paper. Our experiments and analysis show that phase-modulation effects change the phase-matching condition and lead to a decrease in signal output and a degradation in conjugation fidelity.

Abstract:Temporal coherence of individual signal or idler beam, determined by the spectral correlation property of photon pairs, is important for realizing quantum interference among independent sources. To understand the effect of chirp on the temporal coherence property, two series of experiments are investigated by introducing different amount of chirp into either the pulsed pump or individual signal (idler) beam. In the first one, based on spontaneous four wave mixing in a piece of optical fiber, the intensity correlation function of the filtered individual signal beam, which characterizes the degree of temporal coherence, is measured as a function of the chirp of pump. The results demonstrate that the chirp of pump pulses decreases the degree of temporal coherence. In the second one, a Hong-Ou-Mandel type two-photon interference experiment with the signal beams generated in two different fibers is carried out. The results illustrate that the chirp of individual beam does not change the temporal coherence degree, but affect the temporal mode matching. To achieve high visibility, apart from improving the coherence degree by minimizing the chirp of pump, mode matching should be optimized by managing the chirps of individual beams.

Abstract:The theory of four-wave mixing (FWM) in quantum dot (QD) semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) has been discussed by the combination of the QD rate equations system and the pulse propagation in QD SOAs. This study has covered two types of QD structures: the two-level QD structure, where the ground state (GS) and wetting layer have been considered; and the three-level QD structure, where the excited state (ES) has been taken into account. The relations for differential gain were also discussed. FWM efficiency and its components, comprising spectral hole burning, carrier heating and carrier density pulsation (CDP), are calculated.The results show that inclusion of ES is essential. At a high carrier density and for a long term frequency, the FWM was found to be detuning independently while it is symmetric for short pulses. Neglecting CH makes the FWM in QD SOAs symmetric and detuning independent, which are desired characteristics for optical communication applications. The results corroborate available experimental observations. The effective capture time of QD is the main parameter and can be ascribed to the differences between the two- and three-level models.

Abstract:Chip-based cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) devices consisting of a self-assembled InAs quantum dot (QD) coupled to a high quality factor GaAs microdisk cavity are coherently probed through their optical channel using a fiber taper waveguide. We highlight one particularly important aspect of this all-fiber measurement setup, which is the accuracy to which the optical coupling level and optical losses are known relative to typical free-space excitation techniques. This allows for precise knowledge of the intracavity photon number and measurement of absolute transmitted and reflected signals. Resonant optical spectroscopy of the system under both weak and strong driving conditions are presented, which when compared with a quantum master equation model of the system allows for determination of the coherent coupling rate between QD exciton and optical cavity mode, the different levels of elastic and inelastic dephasing of the exciton state, and the position and orientation of the QD within the cavity. Pump-probe measurements are also performed in which a far off-resonant red-detuned control laser beam is introduced into the cavity. Rather than producing a measurable ac-Stark shift in the exciton line of the QD, we find that this control beam induces a saturation of the resonant system response. The broad photoluminescence spectrum resulting from the presence of the control beam in the cavity points to sub-bandgap absorption in the semiconductor, and the resulting free-carrier generation, as the likely source of system saturation.

Abstract:We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the four-wave mixing (FWM) process between a coherent signal light and an incoherent pump light in a highly nonlinear fiber. In the experiment, two main phenomena are observed: 1) the peak power of the spectrum of the coherent signal light decreases along the fiber rather than be amplified; 2) the spectrum of the coherent signal is broadened. A theory of the FWM process between incoherent pump and coherent signal is proposed by considering the incoherence of the pump which has amplitude and phase fluctuations. The theoretical results agree with the experimental results.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing process with a large group index difference of the signal and idler pulses in a nonlinear optical fiber is theoretically investigated when the pump is continuous light. We prove that in the four-wave mixing process, the signal and idler waves would finally propagate in a common group velocity in spite of their different group indices. When the effective phase mismatch in four-wave mixing is not zero, their carrier frequencies shift in different directions. The asymptotic result of the signal and idler shape and carrier frequency shift are obtained. The theoretical prediction is validated by the numerical simulation.

Abstract:Observing nonlinear optical quantum effects or implementing quantum information protocols using nonlinear optics requires moving to ever-smaller input light intensities. However, low light intensities generally mean weak optical nonlinearities, inadequate for many applications. Here we calculate the performance of four-wave mixing in various optical fibers for the case where one of the input beams is a single photon. We show that in tapered chalcogenide glass fibers (microwires) a single photon plus strong pump beam can produce a pair of photons with probability 0.1%, much higher than in previous work on bulk and waveguided crystal sources. Such a photon converter could be useful for creating large entangled photon states, for performing a loophole-free test of Bell's inequalities, and for quantum communication.

Abstract:Properties of four-wave mixing (FWM) in the semiconductor laser amplifier are studied experimentally in this paper. The optical phase conjugation of the mixing wave is applied to compensate the chromatic dispersion of transmission fiber. It is presented experimental results of the transmission of short optical pulses with 12-ps width over 204 km standard single mode fiber. The results confirm that mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) employing FWM in a semiconductor laser amplifier is one of potential dispersion compensation techniques for optical transmission over standard single mode fiber with bit rate beyond 40Gb/s.

Abstract:Abstract We theoretically study the four-wave mixing (FWM) response in a quantum dot-cavity coupling system, where a two-level quantum dot (QD) is placed in an optical cavity while the cavity mode is coupled to the nanomechanical resonator via radiation pressure. The influences of the QD-cavity coupling strength, the Rabi coupling strength of the QD, and the power of the pump light on the FWM intensity are mainly considered. The numerical results show that the FWM intensity in this hybrid system can be significantly enhanced by increasing the QD-cavity coupling strength. In addition, the FWM intensity can be effectively modulated by the Rabi coupling strength and the pump power. Furthermore, the effects of the cavity decay rate and the cavity-pump detuning on the FWM signal are also explored. The obtained results may have potential applications in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information science.

Optimizing Spectral Phase Transfer in Four-Wave Mixing with Gas-filled Capillaries: A Trade-off Study

Abstract:Four-wave mixing (FWM) in gas-filled hollow-core capillaries, a nonlinear optical process that mixes signal and pump photon frequencies to generate idler frequency photons, offers a method for precise spectral phase transfer from signal to idler at ultrashort timescales and extreme powers. However, this regime is challenged by competing linear and nonlinear dynamics, leading to significant trade-offs between spectral phase transfer and conversion efficiency. Our computational investigation focuses on upconversion of femtosecond pulses from the infrared (IR) to the ultraviolet (UV), a range notoriously difficult to manipulate. We explore an intermediate energy regime that strikes an optimal balance between FWM-mediated phase-transfer fidelity and nonlinear conversion efficiency. By adjusting the energy ratios and spectral phase profiles of the input signal, we achieve conversion efficiencies of approximately 5%-15% while maintaining an effectively quasi-linear spectral phase transfer. These findings contribute to establishing first-principles and scaling laws essential for applications such as high-precision imaging, spectroscopy, quantum transduction, and distributed entangled interconnects, facilitating advanced control of ultrafast photonic and electronic wavepackets in quantum materials with unprecedented spatial and temporal precision.

Abstract:Single-photon-level quantum frequency conversion has recently been demonstrated using silicon nitride microring resonators. The resonance enhancement offered by such systems enables high-efficiency translation of quantum states of light across wide frequency ranges at subwatt pump powers. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of the conversion dynamics in these systems and show that they are capable of converting single- and multiphoton quantum states. Analytic formulas for the conversion efficiency, spectral conversion probability density, and pump-power requirements are derived which are in good agreement with previous theoretical and experimental results. We show that with only modest improvement to the state of the art, efficiencies exceeding 95% are achievable using less than 100 mW of pump power. At the critical driving strength that yields maximum conversion efficiency, the spectral conversion probability density is shown to exhibit a flat-topped peak, indicating a range of insensitivity to the spectrum of a single-photon input. Two alternate theoretical approaches are presented to study the conversion dynamics: a dressed-mode approach that yields a better intuitive picture of the conversion process, and a study of the temporal dynamics of the participating modes in the resonator, which uncovers a regime of Rabi-like coherent oscillations of single photons between two different frequency modes. This oscillatory regime arises from the strong coupling of distinct frequency modes mediated by coherent pumps.

Abstract:We studied the semiconductor response with respect to high intensity resonant excitation on short time scale when the contribution of the Fermi statistics of the electrons and holes prevails. We studied both the single and double pulse excitations. For the latter case we considered the time evolution of the multi-wave mixing exciton polarization. The main difference between the excitation by a single pulse or by two non-collinear pulses is that the Rabi oscillations of the multi-wave mixing response are characterized by two harmonics. Analyzing the operator dynamics governed by the external excitation we found that there are three invariant spin classes, which do not mix with the evolution of the system. Two classes correspond to the bright exciton states and one contains all dark states. We found that the dynamics of the classes is described by six frequencies and the Rabi frequencies are only two of them (one for each bright class). We discuss the effect of the dispersion of the electrons and holes and the Coulomb interaction describing the semiconductor by the semiconductor Bloch equation (SBE). We show that if initially the system is in the ground state then the SBE preserves the invariant spin classes thus proving absence of the dark excitons in the framework of this description. We found that due to the mass difference between holes of different kind additional Rabi frequencies, two of those present in the operator dynamics, should appear in the evolution of the exciton polarization.
