Abstract:Optical delay lines implemented in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are essential for creating robust and low-cost optical signal processors on miniaturized chips. In particular, tunable delay lines enable a key feature of programmability for the on-chip processing functions. However, the previously investigated tunable delay lines are plagued by a severe drawback of delay-dependent loss due to the propagation loss in the constituent waveguides. In principle, a serial-connected amplifier can be used to compensate such losses or perform additional amplitude manipulation. However, this solution is generally unpractical as it introduces additional burden on chip area and power consumption, particularly for large-scale integrated PICs. Here, we report an integrated tunable delay line that overcomes the delay-dependent loss, and simultaneously allows for independent manipulation of group delay and amplitude responses. It uses a ring resonator with a tunable coupler and a semiconductor optical amplifier in the feedback path. A proof-of-concept device with a free spectral range of 11.5 GHz and a delay bandwidth in the order of 200 MHz is discussed in the context of microwave photonics and is experimentally demonstrated to be able to provide a lossless delay up to 1.1 to a 5 ns Gaussian pulse. The proposed device can be designed for different frequency scales with potential for applications across many other areas such as telecommunications, LIDAR, and spectroscopy, serving as a novel building block for creating chip-scale programmable optical signal processors.

Abstract:Tunable delays in semiconductor optical amplifiers are achieved via four wave mixing between a strong pump beam and a modulated probe beam. The delay of the probe beam can be controlled both electrically, by changing the SOA bias, and optically, by varying the pump power or the pump-probe detuning. For sinusoidal modulated signal at 0.5 GHz, a tunable delay of 1.6 ns is achieved. This corresponds to a RF phase change of 1.6 pi. For 1.3 ns optical pulses propagating through the SOA a delay of 0.59 ns is achieved corresponding to a delay-bandwidth product exceeding 0.45. For both the cases, slow light and superluminal light are observed as the pump-probe detuning is varied. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A tunable time delay for a 100-ps pulse is achieved via a SOA cascaded band-pass filter, which can be tailored by tuning the filter or changing the SOA injection current. For a single pulse, when the pulse propagates through the cascaded system, a delay of 99.6 ps and an advance of 42.6 ps can be achieved by altering the SOA injection current at two different wavelengths located in the red band and blue band of the filter, respectively. The corresponding tunable delay range is 165 ps, and the maximum delay-bandwidth product (DBP) is 1.65. For an optical sequence, to our knowledge, it is the first time that the time delay is tailored over 145.6 ps corresponding to a DBP of 1.46 by tuning the wavelength from 1556.075 to 1556.955 nm, and 45.2 ps (95.6 ps) advance (delay) by tuning the injection current from 100 to 500 mA at 1556.155 nm (1556.955 nm). The dependence of the time delay on the injection current and filtering configuration has been discussed based on plenty of experiments data. Based on SOA's fast switching, this device can be used for signal synchronization and bit-by-bit signal processing in a communication system.

Abstract:A new tunable optical delay scheme based on real-time Fourier transformation and ramp-type phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating is adopted to implement the real-time Fourier transformation, and tunable delay is realized by changing the ramp-type modulating signal's period. Experimental results agree well with the theory. The signal distorts little after the delay, and a 18 ps delay is achieved for a 2-ps-wide optical pulse.

Abstract:Fast reconfiguration time of several nanoseconds is highly required for microwave photonic beamformers such as in 5/6G wireless communication systems. However, most previously reported integrated optical true-time delay lines (OTTDLs) have a response time of tens of microseconds. In this study, we propose and demonstrate silicon-integrated 8-channel 6-bit tunable OTTDLs with fast tuning speed for the first time. All the delay lines are identical with a delay step of 4.93 ps, and a maximum delay of 310.84 ps. With the overall optimized low-loss delay waveguides, 3-dB couplers, and electro-optic optical switches, we realize an OTTDL with an average fiber-to-fiber insertion loss of 11 (7) dB working in the electro-optic (thermo-optic) mode within a wavelength range of 1520-1580 nm. The electro-optic switching speed is 8 ns and 15 ns for the rising and falling time, respectively. By turning on PIN-diode-based variable optical attenuators (VOAs) to suppress leakages, the delay ripple can be suppressed to < 0.45 ps over a broad bandwidth of 20-43.5 GHz.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable fractional-order photonic differentiator (DIFF) that can process input pulses with a sub-gigahertz bandwidth. Our scheme utilizes the self-induced optical modulation effect observed in a silicon-on-insulator micro-ring resonator. Gaussian-like pulses with varying pulse widths between 7.5 and 20 ns are employed for differentiation, achieving an energy efficiency over 45%, to the best of our knowledge, which surpasses all previously reported schemes for input pulses with a sub-gigahertz bandwidth. We simulate the temporal dynamics of pulses to gain insight into the physical mechanisms underlying the differentiated outputs and provide a method for differentiation order adjustment, which is experimentally realized using an all-optical pump-probe technique.

Abstract:A new method to achieve wideband continuously tunable delays in an all-fiber system is proposed, which uses dispersion in the optical fiber and spectrum filtering of supercontinuum generation of the ultra-short signal pulse in highly nonlinear fiber. A delay of 3.175 ns is experimentally demonstrated, and the potential delay up to 800 ns can be achieved using large dispersion fiber and wideband supercontinuum (SC) generation up to several hundreds of nanometers. Abstract:All optical wavelength conversion between picosecond pulses based on four-wave mixing (FWM) is experimentally demoonstrated in 80-m dispersion-flatted high nonlinear microstructure, fibers (MF). The pulsed signal with 10-GHz rcpetition rate and 1.6-ps pulse width is used as pump wave. In the experiments, both down-and up- conversion are obtained in this type of wavelength converter. Moreover, tunable single-to-dual channel wavelength conversion is experimentally observed. Abstract:Slow light based on four-wave mixing (FWM) wavelength conversion and dispersion is experimentally studied. The FWM bandwidth of the highly nonlinear fiber is measured to be 40 nm, which is also the slow light tunable bandwidth. A 34 ns delay of 500 MHz sine signal is achieved in standard single mode fiber, and 198 ns delay of short pulses with 100 ps width is achieved in dispersion compensation fiber (DCF). An advancement of 209 ns for the 100 ps short pulses is also achieved in the DCF. The method to increase the slow light delay is discussed, and large delay up to microseconds is expected when wideband FWM wavelength conversion and large dispersion fibers are used. The expected large delay will help us realize high efficiency fiber delay lines and all-fiber buffers.

Abstract:This investigation experimentally demonstrates the feasibility of the electrically and continuously tunable optical delay line using a semiconductor laser. The time delays for a 10 Gbps data signal are electrically delayed by adjusting the bias current of laser, and the maximum delay is approximately 41 ps. We also measure the bit error rate against the receiver power by various bias currents and wavelength detuning (Δλ). Measurements are made to verify the feasibility to use in optical communication systems.
High-fidelity, broadband stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-based slow light using fast noise modulation

Abstract:We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, while maintaining the delay performance. A fractional delay of 0.81 with a SNR of 5.2 is achieved at the pump power of 350 mW using a 2-km-long highly nonlinear fiber with the fast noise-modulation method, demonstrating a 50% increase in eye-opening and a 36% increase in SNR compared to a previous slow-modulation method.

Abstract:We present an analysis and demonstration of the doubling of the chirp rate and total chirp bandwidth of a frequency chirped optical signal by the process of four-wave mixing in a non-linear optical medium. The effects of chromatic dispersion and input power on the maximum achievable output bandwidth are analyzed, and a dispersion compensation technique for phase matching is described. The doubling of an input linear frequency sweep of 100 GHz/1 ms in a highly nonlinear optical fiber is experimentally demonstrated. Further, it is proposed that a cascaded implementation of the four-wave mixing process leads to a geometric increase in the bandwidth of the frequency chirp. With an electronically tuned chirped laser at the input stage, this process can be used to generate extremely wideband swept frequency sources with no moving parts, for applications in high-speed and high-resolution optical imaging and spectroscopy.

Abstract:In this work, we report on an off-resonant four-wave mixing experiment via a ladder-type configuration in a hot rubidium atomic vapour. We find for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, that the generated light is delayed compared with the reference. At the same time, the seeded signal beam is also delayed, though the delay time is not as so large as the one that the generated light has. Both delayed times can be adjusted experimentally by controlling the two-photon detuning. The experimental results are in good agreement with our theoretical predictions. Our results may be important for storing telecom-band photons.

Abstract:A high performance tunable semiconductor fiber ring laser (SFRL) is designed. Tunable range is 40nm. Mixing the output of SFRL with SDH optical signal in SOA, Highly nondegenerate FWM is demonstrated. Results for - 19.49nm, down-and 7.04nm up-wavelength conversion with input signal at 2.5Gb/s have been obtained. In this experiment both pump and converted wavelengths can be continuously tuned with no external pump light source.
