Abstract:Profit was defined as a function of the genotype of animals and variables controlled by management. Alternative parameterizations of management variables were examined to compare the effect of controlling age at slaughter, weight at slaughter, or fat depth at slaughter. The various parameterizations are shown to result in equivalent economic weights for genetic variables, provided management variables are optimized for the current genotype. The implication is that economic weights and selection indexes can be conveniently calculated for age constant end points even though commercial production may involve weight or backfat depth constant slaughter points. An example of selection for profit in the feedlot phase of beef production is presented. Three genotype-management combinations were considered. Economic weights and subsequent selection index weights were shown to depend on both average genotypic means and management (feeding and marketing program) factors.
The AEB System with Active and Passive Safety Integration for Reducing Occupants' Injuries in High-Velocity Region

Abstract:AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) is a representative safety system that assists a driver to avoid forward collision or mitigate crash velocity resulting in reduction of occupant’s injury risk using Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor. This paper focuses on establishing appropriate Pre-Safety seatBelt (PSB) activation time in order to minimize occupant forward movement and head & neck injuries in the event of collision when it is unavoidable in the aspect of active and passive safety system integration. And also, it is the other goal that decreases the collision velocity by applying more efficient pre-braking profile. For this, AEB test is performed with H-3 5% & 50% human dummy seated in the passenger side. The test vehicle is equipped with Lidar and camera sensor fusion AEB system, PSB, and a premium electronic stability control (ESC) module. From this study, the last time to activate PSB considering occupant’s injury and the improved pre-brake profile beneficial to collision velocity reduction and occupant’s behavior were verified.

Effects of Automated Emergency Braking and Seatbelt Pre-Pretensioning on Occupant Injury Risks in High-Severity Frontal Crashes

Abstract:In high-severity crashes, occupant protection is challenging. Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) and seatbelt pre-pretensioning (PPT) are means to improve occupant protection; the purpose of this study was to quantify their effects on occupant injury risks in high-severity full-frontal crashes by Finite Element (FE) simulations. The SAFER Active average male Human Body Model was used as an occupant substitute. The crash pulses used were from separate full-frontal crash simulations using a Honda Accord FE model. The vehicle interior model comprised a seat, an instrument panel, a three-point pretensioned seatbelt system with a load-limiter of 3.1 kN force level, and a frontal passenger airbag. The effects of AEB and PPT were evaluated by simulating a 1 g pre-crash braking scenario for 0.5 s, with and without AEB, for three different PPT force levels: 0, 300, and 600 N. The impact speed of 80 km/h was reduced to 69 km/h by AEB. When neither system was activated, the predicted risk for an occupant to sustain two or more fractured ribs (NFR2+) was 100% for both 45- and 65-year-old male occupants. The risks were reduced when the AEB was activated, particularly for the 45-year-old occupant. When the AEB was activated, the risks of concussion and rib fractures were reduced; upper neck tension forces, pelvis Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (ASIS) forces, and lower extremity forces were also reduced. Increasing the PPT forces reduced the rib fracture risk further (to about 48% for a 45-year-old occupant with 600 N PPT force). The reduced speed due to AEB resulted in a lower concussion risk (from 71.3% to 31%). However, the concussion risk increased slightly with increased PPT forces.
Effects of an integrated safety system for swivel seat arrangements in frontal crash

Abstract:Objective: Autonomous vehicles (Avs) have paved the way for the arrangement of swivel seats in vehicles, which could pose a challenge to traditional safety systems. The integration of automated emergency braking (AEB) and pre-pretension (PPT) seatbelts improves protection for a vehicle's occupant. The objective of this study is to explore the control strategies of an integrated safety system for swiveled seating orientations. Methods: Occupant restraints were examined in various seating configurations using a single-seat model with a seat-mounted seatbelt. Seat orientation was set at different angles, from -45° to 45° with 15° increments. A pretension was used on the shoulder belt to represent an active belt force cooperating with AEB. A generic full frontal vehicle pulse of 20 mph was applied to the sled. The occupant's kinematics response under various integrated safety system control strategies was analyzed by extracting a head pre-crash kinematics envelope. The injury values were calculated for various seating directions with or without an integrated safety system at the collision speed of 20 mph. Results: In a lateral movement, the excursions of the dummy head were 100 mm and 70 mm in the global coordinate system for negative and positive seat orientations, respectively. In the axial movement, the head traveled 150 mm and 180 mm in the global coordinate system for positive and negative seating directions, respectively. The 3-point seatbelt did not restrain the occupant symmetrically. The occupant experienced greater y-axis excursion and smaller x-axis excursion in the negative seat position. Various integrated safety system control strategies led to significant differences in head movement in the y direction. The integrated safety system reduced the occupant's potential injury risks in different seating positions. When the AEB and PPT were activated, the absolute HIC15, brain injury criteria (BrIC), neck injury (Nij), and chest deflection were reduced in most seating directions. However, the pre-crash increased the injury risks at some seating positions. Conclusion: The pre-pretension seatbelt could reduce the occupant's forward movement in the rotating seat positions in a pre-crash period. The occupant's pre-crash motion envelope was generated, which could be beneficial to future restraint systems and vehicle interior design. The integrated safety system could reduce injuries in different seating orientations.

Abstract:The automatic emergency braking (AEB) system is an effective intelligent vehicle active safety system for avoiding certain types of collisions. This study develops a national-level safety impact evaluation model for this intelligent vehicle function, including the potential maximum impact and realistic impact. The evaluation model was firstly applied in China to provide insights into Chinese policymaking. Road traffic fatality and severe injury trends, the proportion of different collision types, the effectiveness of collision avoidance, and the AEB market penetration rates are considered in the potential maximum impact scenario. Furthermore, the AEB activation rate and the technology's technical limitations, including its effectiveness in different weather, light, and speed conditions, are discussed in the realistic scenario. With a 100% market penetration rate, fatalities could be reduced by 13.2%, and injuries could be reduced by 9.1%. Based on China's policy, the market penetration rate of intelligent vehicles with AEB is predicted to be 34.0% in 2025 and 60.3% in 2030. With this large market penetration rate increase of AEB, the reductions in fatalities and severe injuries are 903-2309 and 2025-5055 in 2025; and 1483-3789 and 3895-7835 in 2030, respectively. Considering AEB's activation rate and its three main limitations, the adjusted realistic result is approximately 2/5 of the potential maximum result.
A Numerical Analysis of Pre-Deployment Effect of Side-Impact Airbags in Reducing Occupant Injuries

Abstract:Side impact collisions represent the second greatest cause of fatality in motor vehicle accidents. Side-impact airbags (SABs), though not mandated by NHTSA, have been installed in recent model year vehicle due to its effectiveness in reducing passengers’ injuries and fatality rates. However, the increase in number of frontal and side airbags installed in modern vehicles has concomitantly led to the rise of airbag related injuries. A typical side-impact mechanical or electronic sensor require much higher sensitivity due to the limited crush zones making SABs deployment more lethal to out-of-position passengers and children. Appropriate pre-crash sensing needs to be utilized in order to properly restraint passengers and reduce passengers’ injuries in a vehicle collision. A typical passenger vehicle utilizes sensors to activate airbag deployment when certain crush displacement, velocity and or acceleration threshold are met. In this study, it is assumed that an ideal pre-crash sensing system such as a combination of proximity and velocity and acceleration sensors is used to govern the SAB pre-deployment algorithm. The main focus of this paper is to provide a numerical analysis of the benefit of pre-deploying SAB in lateral crashes in reducing occupant injuries. The effectiveness of SABs at low and high speed side-impact collisions are examined using numerical Anthropomorphic Test Dummy (ATD) model. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is primarily used to evaluate this concept. Velocities ranging from 33.5mph to 50mph are used in the FEA simulations. The ATD used in this test is the ES-2re 50th percentile side-impact dummy (SID). Crucial injury criteria such as Head Injury Criteria (HIC), Thoracic Trauma Index (TTI), and thorax deflection are computed for the ATD and compared against those from a typical airbag system without pre-crash sensing. It is shown that the pre-deployment of SABs has the potential of reducing airbag parameters such as deployment velocity and rise rate that will directly contribute to reducing airbag related injuries.
Research on the Protection Strategy of Pretensioner Seat-belt with the Active Braking Technology

Abstract:Active safety and passive safety technology have been developed for many years in foreign countries. According to the studies by some foreign authorities, pre-crash seat-belt can protect the occupant in collision more effectively, and reduce the injury during the accident greatly. In this paper, sled tests and simulation were carried out to analyze the influence of pretensioner on the occupants. It analyzes the important parameters of motor driving belt. It carries out orthogonal experiment, and analysis of the results. From the influential factors, find the optimal combination of parameters. Compared with the simulation and pyrotechnical model, the WIC of optimized model reduces nearly 10%, which improving the safety performance of the seat-belt greatly. Compared with traditional pyrotechnical, the head injury index HIC36 reduces by 16.94%, HIC15 reduces by 20%. Compared with the sled test, the index of the optimal model decreases more than 25%. The effect of active preloaded on the head is more obvious.

Abstract:Avoidance of frontal collisions by autonomous emergency braking (AEB) in sudden traffic jams has the potential to cause rear-end collisions by the following cars. In this study, finite element analyses using a human body model were performed to investigate how the muscle activations of drivers rear-ended by the following car could affect head-neck injury risks. Three muscle conditions of sleeping, relaxed, and braced drivers were assumed using a developed muscle controller. The simulation results suggest that vehicle systems that let drivers brace themselves at the onset of the AEB might be effective in reducing head-neck injury risks in this type of collisions.
Accell particle-mediated DNA immunization elicits humoral, cytotoxic, and protective immune responses.

Abstract:Accell particle-mediated gene delivery technology was employed for the intracellular delivery of antigen-encoding expression vectors in epidermal tissues in laboratory animals. Delivery of plasmid DNA-coated gold microparticles using the Accell gene delivery system resulted in de novo antigen expression in epidermal cells that stimulated the induction of antigen-specific humoral and cytotoxic cellular immune responses. Optimal DNA delivery conditions favoring maximal humoral responses required the delivery of 5 x 10(7) micron-sized gold particles containing 300 plasmid copies per particle (80 ng of vector total) into a 4-cm2 area of abdominal skin. Comparison of immune responses between animals that received intramuscular injections of relatively large quantities of vector DNA (100 micrograms) and those that received intracellular deliveries of submicrogram quantities of the same DNA to the epidermis demonstrated that the latter approach was considerably more effective at eliciting strong humoral responses. In addition, cytotoxic cellular immune responses were elicited to HIV-1 gp120 following epidermal delivery of HIV-1 gp160 or gp120 expression constructs. A qualitative shift from predominantly cytotoxic cellular to predominantly humoral immune responses with continued immunization indicated the potential for optimizing delivery conditions to favor specifically one type of response over the other.
AIS 3+ Thoracic Injuries Among Drivers in Real-World Motor Vehicle Frontal Crashes: The Effect of Impact Direction, Impact Location and Status of Seat Belt

Abstract:This paper, comparing seat belt usage, investigates the combined effects of specific impact directions and impact locations on the serious-to-maximum thoracic injuries of drivers in frontal impact based on the 1995-2010 data from the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Automotive Sampling System-Crashworthiness Data System (NASS-CDS). The selected sample is classified by three impact locations (distributed, offset and corner) and two impact directions (pure frontal and oblique), resulting in a total of six crash configurations. The risks of thoracic injury and its anatomic structure injury for drivers, considering using seat belt or not independently, in different frontal crash configurations are evaluated. The relative risks are computed also. Overall, results of the analyses reveal that the effectiveness of thorax protection by the seat belt is significant. But for thoracic organ injuries, in frontal corner impact, using seat belt may not decrease the risk of serious-to-maximum injuries significantly, as in frontal distributed impact for skeletal injuries.
Investigation on AEB Key Parameters for Improving Car to Two-Wheeler Collision Safety Using In-Depth Traffic Accident Data

Abstract:Automatic emergency braking (AEB) system play an essential role in avoiding traffic collisions and minimizing impact strengths, which contributes to improving road traffic safety. However, the present research of the AEB system is mainly concentrated on avoiding the car to car and car to pedestrian collisions. China has typical mixed traffic characteristics, especially the frequent car to two-wheeler collision accidents. Research on the AEB system to prevent car to two-wheeler collisions in complex multi-traffic scenarios is of great significance to further improve the comprehensive performance of the AEB system. In this article, based on the cases of the car to two-wheeler collisions from China In-Depth Accident Study (CIDAS) database, the effects of three key parameters of the AEB system, braking deceleration, braking advance time, and detection range, on the accident rate and severity are studied by accident reconstruction and virtual experiment. Results show that the theoretical optimal detection range of the AEB system is 180°–35 m for the car to two-wheeler collision prevention. Moreover, the current feasible optimal detection range is 120°–35 m due to the limitation of environmental awareness technology. When the braking advance time is 1 s, the detection angle is 120°, and the detection distance is 35 m, the installation of the AEB system can avoid 22.3% of the car to two-wheeler collision accidents. Meanwhile, in the inevitable accidents, the average collision speed of vehicles decreases from 33.93 to 21.34 km/h, which effectively reduces the collision strengths. Findings of this study could help car manufacturers and makers of AEB hardware select the appropriate detection radar. They can also provide ideas and data support for formulating relevant laws and regulations of the AEB system, future development of AEB system, or other driver assistance systems.
Safety Benefits of Belt Pretensioning in Conjunction with Precrash Braking in a Frontal Crash

Abstract:This paper estimates safety benefits of crash with precrash braking maneuvers under different pretensioning control factors. A sled test was conducted at 40 kmph with a lap-shoulder-belted Hybrid III 50 th percentile male dummy to simulate a frontal crash. A multi-body model of the sled test was developed based on the actual situation and verified by test data including the seat belt loads, head and chest injury responses of the test dummy and motion postures of the dummy. An impact pulse with a 0.2-second-long constant deceleration of 0.8 g ahead of crash was loaded on the verification model to simulate the real deceleration and the crash process with precrash braking maneuvers. The protection performance of a 3-point seat belt, a seat belt with pyrotechnic pretensioner and a motorized seat belt was compared, and the motorized seat belt had the best protection effect. Different pretensioning control factors, such as pretensioning time and pretensioning force, had remarkable effects on injury responses of the dummy. This method could also be used to develop advanced occupant restraint systems coupled with precrash systems to integrate vehicle active safety and passive safety.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to develop a method that uses a combination of field data analysis, naturalistic driving data analysis, and computational simulations to explore the potential injury reduction capabilities of integrating passive and active safety systems in frontal impact conditions. For the purposes of this study, the active safety system is actually a driver assist (DA) feature that has the potential to reduce delta-V prior to a crash, in frontal or other crash scenarios. A field data analysis was first conducted to estimate the delta-V distribution change based on an assumption of 20% crash avoidance resulting from a pre-crash braking DA feature. Analysis of changes in driver head location during 470 hard braking events in a naturalistic driving study found that drivers' head positions were mostly in the center position before the braking onset, while the percentage of time drivers leaning forward or backward increased significantly after the braking onset. Parametric studies with a total of 4800 MADYMO simulations showed that both delta-V and occupant pre-crash posture had pronounced effects on occupant injury risks and on the optimal restraint designs. By combining the results for the delta-V and head position distribution changes, a weighted average of injury risk reduction of 17% and 48% was predicted by the 50th percentile Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD) model and human body model, respectively, with the assumption that the restraint system can adapt to the specific delta-V and pre-crash posture. This study demonstrated the potential for further reducing occupant injury risk in frontal crashes by the integration of a passive safety system with a DA feature. Future analyses considering more vehicle models, various crash conditions, and variations of occupant characteristics, such as age, gender, weight, and height, are necessary to further investigate the potential capability of integrating passive and DA or active safety systems.

Safety benefits of motorized seat belt as a component in ADAS in front-end collisions

Abstract:This paper estimates the benefits of the motorized seat belt in ADAS in both safety and economic aspects. The motorized seat belt could reduce the forward displacement of occupants during brake, which could result in more severe injuries in frontal crashes. A MADYMO model is used to simulate the forward displacement of the driver during brake. Sled tests verify that drivers have higher injury risk in more forward displaced position. Statistics analysis is also conducted to have a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of the motorized seat belt. A nationally representative set of frontal collisions is studied as if the drivers having no avoidance maneuver are restrained in the nominal seating position. The results show that the injury number is reduced by 53,202 with the motorized seat belt. The method innovated in this paper can be employed to estimated benefits of other vehicle safety technologies.

Abstract:The study quantifies the kinematics of children in booster child restraint systems (CRSs) in various naturalistic seating postures exposed to frontal impacts in a full-vehicle environment, with and without the application of pre-crash automatic emergency braking. The PIPER 6YO and 10YO pediatric human body models were positioned in CRSs. The 6YO was restrained on a lowback (LBB) and highback (HBB) booster, while the 10YO was positioned on an LBB and in a NoCRS condition. All simulations used the 3-point seatbelt. The child models were pre-positioned (gravity settled, seatbelt tensioned) in four naturalistic seating postures: leaning-forward, leaning-forward-inward, leaning-forward-outward, and a pre-submarining position, along with a baseline reference seating position. A 2012 Toyota Camry finite element (FE) model was used as the vehicle environment. A standard 3-point lap-shoulder belt system was modeled to restrain the child and CRS in the left-rear vehicle seat. Two vehicle impact cases were considered: with and without a pre-crash AEB. For with-AEB cases, a pre-crash phase was run to incorporate postural changes due to the application of AEB. All seating positions were ultimately subjected to a full-frontal rigid-barrier impact at 35 MPH. A total of 40 conditions were simulated in LS-DYNA. Injury metrics varied widely for both occupants. Shoulder belt slippage was observed for the 6YO leaning-forward-inward on HBB. No head contact was observed for any simulated cases. Forward-leaning and forward-inward-leaning postures generally had greater head excursion across all seating postures. The lap belt rode over the pelvis for pre-submarining postures. Injury metrics for cases with pre-crash AEB were lower compared to their corresponding without-AEB cases. HIC15, head acceleration, upper neck tension force, and upper neck flexion moment were similar or lower for with-AEB scenarios. Pre-crash AEB reduces the effect of the impact despite the same collision speed as cases without-AEB. This is primarily due to the limited travel distance of the occupant, thus, starting an earlier ride-down during the crash. Moreover, different initial seating postures lead to a wide range of injury exposures. Vehicle and child restraint design should incorporate these seating postures to ensure robust protection of the occupant in a crash.

In autonomous vehicle, since that occupants no long need to operate the vehicle, they will have time to relax and entertain or communicate with other people. In order to improve the collision safety of the occupants who move freely and have different seat orientation angles in autonomous vehicle, a protection strategy based on the cooperative control of the rotating seat and belt airbag to avoid occupant injuries is proposed: in the pre-crash phase, the occupant on a rotated seat is repositioned into a close-to-standard frontal facing position, while the belt airbag deploys; in the crash phase, the fully deployed belt airbag cushions and absorbs occupant impact with the support of the occupant's legs to reduce injury. Firstly, the current prediction time for unavoidable collisions in self-driving cars is about 350 ms, therefore, the airbag can be inflated by enlarging the inflation duration to reduce its impact during deployment. Due to the fixed installation position of the dashboard airbag, which cannot accompany the deficiency of seat movement, a new type of belt airbag is designed; Then, the simulation models of ±45° and ±90° seat orientation were established to study the injury mechanism and kinematic response of occupants with different seat orientations in frontal crashes; Finally, the simulation models of active rotating seat with belt airbag were established to study the kinematic response and injury risk of occupants with rotating seat and belt airbag protection strategy. The belt airbag with a capacity of 65 L developed in this paper could effectively protect occupants in a frontal collision at an inflation time of 200 ms and a total inflation mass of 31.4 g; The occupant safety strategy based on rotating seat and belt airbag can effectively reduce the risk of collision injury of occupants with different seat orientations in autonomous vehicle.

Driver warning can reduce intersection accidents by up to 50 percent; adding Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) delivers a reduction of up to 70 percent. However, these findings are based on an assumed 100 percent equipment rate, which may take decades to achieve. Our study investigates the relationship between intersection AEB market penetration rates and avoidance of accidents and injuries in order to guide implementation strategies. Additionally, residual accident characteristics (impact configurations and severity) are analyzed to provide a basis for future in-crash protection requirements. We determined which accidents would have been avoided through the use of an Intersection AEB system with different sensor field-of-views (180° and 120°) by means of re-simulating the pre-crash phase of 792 straight crossing path (SCP) car-to-car accidents recorded in the German In-Depth Accident Study (GIDAS) and the associated Pre-Crash Matrix (PCM). Intersection AEB was activated when neither of the conflict opponents could avoid the crash through reasonable braking or steering reactions. For not-avoided accidents, we used the Kudlich-Slibar rigid body impulse model to calculate the change of velocity during the impact as a measure of impact severity and the principal direction of force. Accident avoidance over market penetration is not linear but exponential, with higher gains at low penetration rates and lower gains at higher rates. A wide field-of-view sensor (180°) substantially increased accident avoidance and injury mitigation rates compared to a 120° field-of-view sensor. For a 180° field-of-view sensor at 100 percent market penetration, about 80 percent of the accidents and 90 percent of the MAIS2 + F injuries could be avoided. For the remaining accidents, AEB intervention rarely affected side of impact. The median change of velocity (delta-V) of the remaining crashes reduces only marginally at low penetration rates but this reduction increases with higher penetration rates. With 100 percent market penetration, one quarter of the vehicles still involved in straight crossing path accidents will sustain a delta-V higher than 17 km/h. Intersection AEB is very effective. Enabling a fast initial implementation of systems with wide field-of-view sensor(s) and ensuring a high market penetration over the longer term is essential to achieve high crash avoidance and injury mitigation rates over time. The standards for in-crash protection must be high to mitigate injury in the unavoidable, residual accidents.
Improving protection system for wheelchair-seated occupants in vehicle side impacts

Abstract:Objective: Previous research on occupant protection systems for wheelchair-seated occupants focused on frontal impacts, while similar studies on side impacts are very limited. The objective of this study was to identify the major injury concerns for wheelchair-seated occupants in side impacts and develop restraint systems to mitigate such injury concerns.Methods: Seven sled tests in side impact conditions were first conducted at 30 km/h with a 24 g peak deceleration. An ES2-RE ATD and surrogate wheelchair base (SWCB) were used in all tests, which varied armrest design, width of the SWCB, and wheelchair tiedown conditions. These sled tests set up the baseline performance and provided validation data for computational models. A set of validated MADYMO models were then used to investigate the safety concerns and potential restraint solutions for wheelchair-seated occupants in side impacts. Simulations covered nearside and farside impacts, inboard or outboard D-ring locations, varied wheelchair locations relative to the side door, varied seatbelt anchorage locations, and a few Center Airbag To Contain Humans (CATCH) designs. Finally, another set of sled tests were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of varied CATCH designs for protecting wheelchair-seated occupants in farside impacts.Results: Simulations suggested that wheelchair-seated occupants might fall from the wheelchair in farside impacts, while in nearside impacts the seatbelt and curtain airbag can provide reasonable protection to occupants using wheelchairs. The CATCH design, a curtain airbag mounted to the roof centerline with tethers attached outboard of the wheelchair station, was effective at preventing the ATD from falling off the wheelchair. Results from sled tests to iterate CATCH parameters confirmed that the concept was effective at retaining occupants seated in wheelchairs under farside impact loading.Conclusions: This study is the first to investigate wheelchair-seated occupant protection in both nearside and farside impacts. The injury concerns identified in farside impacts and the CATCH design can potentially help improve the protection of wheelchair-seated occupants in side impacts in the future. The CATCH design has potential to improve farside protection for occupants in traditional seating.
Research on Vehicle AEB Control Strategy Based on Safety Time–Safety Distance Fusion Algorithm

Abstract:With the increasing consumer focus on automotive safety, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems, recognized as effective active safety technologies for collision avoidance and the mitigation of collision-related injuries, are gaining wider application in the automotive industry. To address the issues of the insufficient working reliability of AEB systems and their unsatisfactory level of accordance with the psychological expectations of drivers, this study proposes an optimized second-order Time to Collision (TTC) safety time algorithm based on the motion state of the preceding vehicle. Additionally, the study introduces a safety distance algorithm derived from an analysis of the braking process of the main vehicle. The safety time algorithm focusing on comfort and the safety distance algorithm focusing on safety are effectively integrated in the time domain and the space domain to obtain the safety time–safety distance fusion algorithm. A MATLAB/Simulink–Carsim joint simulation platform has been established to validate the AEB control strategy in terms of safety, comfort, and system responsiveness. The simulation results show that the proposed safety time–safety distance fusion algorithm consistently achieves complete collision avoidance, indicating a higher safety level for the AEB system. Furthermore, the application of active hierarchical braking minimizes the distance error, at under 0.37 m, which meets psychological expectations of drivers and improves the comfort of the AEB system.
