Abstract:Trimethylamine is a good target for the assay of meat freshness,and also of clinical interest.Therefore,detection of trimethylamine is very meaningful.For this reason,we prepared polypyrrole by emulsion polymerization method,and coated it onto a quartz crystal which was used as the sensing QCM.The change of frequency difference between sensing QCM and reference QCM was used to monitor the atmosphere.When the sensor was exposed to trimethylamine vapor at room temperature,it responded rapidly and obviously.The sensor was characterized in its sensitivity,repeatability,selectivity and long-term stability.The results showed that the performance of sensor was excellent,though the method to prepare it was simple.

Abstract:A rapid, sensitive, low-cost device to detect trimethylamine was presented in this paper. The preparation of water soluble polyaniline was firstly studied. Then the polyaniline was characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-visible spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the water soluble polyaniline film, a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor for trimethylamine detection was fabricated and its characteristics were examined. The sensor consisted of one quartz crystal oscillator coated with the polyaniline film for sensing and the other one for reference. Pretreated with trimethylamine, the QCM sensor had an excellent linear sensitivity to trimethylamine. Easily recovered by N2 purgation, the response of the sensor exhibited a good repeatability. Responses of the sensor to trimethylamine, ethanol and ethyl acetate were compared, and the results showed that the response was related to the polarity of the analyte vapor. Experimental result also showed that the sensitivity of the sensor was relatively stable within one month. The simple and feasible method to prepare and coat the polyaniline sensing film makes it promising for mass production.
Polyaniline–TiO2 Nano-Composite-based Trimethylamine QCM Sensor and Its Thermal Behavior Studies

Abstract:Inorganic/organic composites are very attractive due to synergetic behavior and a wide range of potential use. A polyaniline–TiO2 nano-composite, obtained by combination of chemical polymerization and a sol–gel method, was deposited on the electrode of quartz crystal to implement a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) chemical sensor. The morphology of the composite film was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. The coated quartz crystal and a non-coated quartz crystal were mounted in a sealed chamber, and their frequency difference was monitored. When analyte vapor was injected into the chamber, gas absorption decreased the frequency of the coated quartz crystal and thereby caused an increase of the frequency difference between the two crystals. The frequency difference change response towards trimethylamine was evident and could be recovered by N2 purgation easily. The calibration curve towards trimethylamine, its long-term stability and selectivity were investigated. The thermal behavior of the sensing characteristics was compared with that of a polyaniline QCM sensor. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of polyaniline and polyaniline–TiO2 nano-composite and QCM data under various conditions were used to study the effect of thermal treatment.

Abstract:Sensing technology is the key of intelligent packaging. A variety of different sensing systems for indicating freshness through intelligent packaging have been presented. Polyaniline (PANI) can change its color reversibly through the acid-base reaction with reactive compounds and has been widely used in different kinds of sensors. However, because PANI is insoluble in common organic solvents, this limits its practical usage in many applications. In this work, a highly stable polyaniline-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PANI:PSS) colloid has been developed as a facile colorimetric sensor of volatile amines. The results showed the PANI:PSS colloid is quite sensitive to changes in pH. When PANI:PSS colloids were homogenously deposited on filter paper, the paper are used as a sensor to detect triethylamine (TEA) vapor. The green color of the test paper changed to blue at a TEA concentration as low as 188 ppm.

Abstract:Triethylamine (TEA) significantly harms the human body, so it is important to develop a TEA gas sensor with excellent performance for TEA detection. In this work, a Pd/PdO-In2O3 TEA gas sensor is developed by a simple, low-cost method, which exhibits improved comprehensive performance to TEA, include high sensitivity, fast response/recovery time, good selectivity, long-term stability, and certain moisture resistance. The 0.8%Pd/PdO-In2O3 sensor exhibited a high response of 1380 and a fast res/rec time of 30 s/ 90 s for 10 ppm TEA, and with good selectivity and stability at an optimal operating temperature of 150°C, and a detection limit below 0.1 ppm. The PdO-In2O3 P-N heterojunction accelerates the electron transport speed and provides many electron transport channels, thus endowing the Pd/PdO-In2O3 with excellent TEA sensing performance. This work launches new insights into the development of new semiconductor heterojunctions for high-performance sensor devices.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) grafted with sodium polystyrenesulfonate (NaPSS) were deposited on an interdigitated gold electrode decorated with a layer of positively charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) by a self-assembly method. Then polyaniline (PANI) was in situ polymerized on the surface of the MWNTs to prepare a composite. The structure and morphology of the composite were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The electrical responses of the composite to triethylamine vapor of low concentrations were measured at room temperature. It was found that the composite exhibited a linear response to the vapor in the range of 0.5-8 ppm with the highest sensitivity of similar to 80%, which is much higher than that of MWNTs and PANI separately, and an obvious synergetic effect was observed. In addition, the detection limit was as low as the ppb level, and reversible and relatively fast responses (t(90%) similar to 200 s and similar to 10 min for sensing and recovery, respectively) were observed. The sensing characteristics are highly related to the gas responses of PANI, and a sensing mechanism considering the interaction of MWNTs and PANI was proposed.
Highly Selective Triethylamine Gas Sensor Based on ZnO/Ti3C2Tx MXene Self-Assembly Heterostructure

Abstract:MXenes, as new two-dimensional transition metal compounds, has become promising sensing materials due to the excellent metal conductivity, abundant adsorption sites and the terminal groups of -O, -OH and -F. In this study, we report the well-etched accordion-like Ti3C2Tx by removing Al layer in Ti3AlC2, where T-x represents a wealth of terminal functional groups (-OH, -F, -O, etc.). In addition, unique hierarchical self-assembly ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites are synthesized by hydrothermal method. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller Method investigation also shows that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites has a specific surface area of about 22.08 m(2)/g, and the pore size is mainly located at 11.1 nm. The innovative nanostructure is conducive to the adsorption and response of gas molecules. By investigating the gas sensitive properties of the sensors, it is found that the response of the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor to triethylamine (TEA) is improved by 66 times and 1.58 times over that of pure Ti3C2Tx and ZnO, and the optimal operating temperature is 60degree celsius lower than that of pure ZnO. In addition, the LOD (Low Of Detection) of about 32.7 ppb indicates that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor is suitable for the detection of low concentrations TEA. The sensing performances of the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx sensor at a high humidity of 75 % RH verifies the strong sensing performance in high humidity environment. Furthermore, the composite sensor stabilize in 6 repetitive tests and present slight decrease in response value over 30 days. The excellent TEA sensitive properties indicate that the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite sensor may have promising applications in the gas sensitive field.

Abstract:The excessive intake and inhalation of Triethylamine (TEA), which is an essential ingredient of pharmaceuticals, emulsifiers, dyestuff, soaps, rubber production etc., can cause health hazards such as blue haze, blurry vision, nausea, headache, and faintness; and to prevent the human beings from these hazards, it is crucial to detect TEA level. The present study explores the detection of TEA, using ZnO nanorods and porphyrin coated optical fiber probes. These probes have been synthesized and the topography, composition and morphology of different layers have been confirmed using FESEM, EDX and NMR characterizations. The sensitivity of this hybrid material-based probe has been estimated and was found to be 7-fold to the sensitivity of the metal oxide (ZnO nanorods) based fiber optic probe. The selectivity study has also been performed and it was observed that the analyte TEA has highest response (83.495 nm shift in peak wavelength) compared to other analytes such as the ethanol. This hybrid material-based fiber-optic probe offers the better selectivity and sensitivity for TEA and provides a very quick response time.

Abstract:Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have been extensively investigated for the detection of toxic organic amines. However, the high working temperature of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) remains a challenge that greatly limits their potential in sensor technology. Meanwhile, the sensing mechanism of triethylamine (TEA) has not been fully understood. In this work, the authors report the design of heterogeneous Co3O4/carbon nanofibers (Co3O4/CNFs) and their utilization toward TEA detection at low temperature. With an optimized loading density of Co3O4 nanocrystals, the sensor based on Co3O4/CNFs, which exhibits remarkable response to TEA even at room temperature, delivers the best response of Co3O4/CNFs at 150 °C. Notably, the response of Co3O4/CNFs is three times higher than that of pristine Co3O4. More importantly, they, for the first time, elucidate the TEA sensing mechanism via operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealing that the oxidation of TEA undergoes a two‐step process. This work not only paves the way to design high performance sensing materials, but also contributes to the fundamental understanding of a sensing mechanism.
Construction of Pt/Ce-In2O3 hierarchical microspheres for superior triethylamine detection at low temperature

Abstract:Triethylamine (TEA) is a typical pollution in chemical industry and Corrupt markers of aquatic products. TEA emissions have a serious impact on human health, industrial production and food safety. In this study, hierarchical flower-like Pt-loaded/Ce-doped In2O3 microspheres are synthesized via simple hydrothermal and in-situ reduction methods. The triethylamine (TEA) sensing measurements display the 0.5Pt-3CeIn gas sensor exhibits high sensitivity (Ra/Rg = 900–100 ppm triethylamine), ultra-low optimal working temperature (100 ℃), enhanced responding and recovering speed (158/45 s) and excellent selectivity towards different target gases (ethanol, acetone, xylene, methanol, nitrogen dioxide and methane) including amine (response towards 50 ppm NH3 is lower than 10). The TEA detection limit is as low as 5 ppb and the sensor exhibits a wide TEA detection range. The introduction of Pt and Ce components into In2O3 effectively reduces the operating temperature, promotes the chemisorbed oxygen content (18.14 %) and wildly decreases the band gap (2.97 eV). The gas sensing mechanism of Pt/Ce-In2O3, which is dominated by electronic and chemical sensitization of Pt, catalytic function of Ce dopants and the functional interface between Pt nanoparticles and Ce-doped In2O3 microspheres, is proposed. This work as well testifies the feasibility for multi-components cooperative optimization of MOS in gas sensing applications.

Abstract:Triethylamine is extremely harmful to human health, and chronic inhalation can lead to respiratory and hematological diseases and eye lesions. Hence, it is essential to develop a triethylamine gas-sensing technology with high response, selectivity, and stability for use in healthcare and environmental monitoring. In this work, a simple and low-cost sensor based on the Pt- and Ce-modified In2O3 hollow structure to selectively detect triethylamine is developed. The experimental results reveal that the sensor based on 1% Pt/Ce12In exhibits excellent triethylamine-sensing performance, including its insusceptibility to water, reduced operating temperature, enhanced response, and superior long-term stability. This work suggests that the enhancement of sensing performance toward triethylamine can be attributed to the high relative contents of OV and OC, large specific surface area, catalytic effect, the electronic sensitization of Pt, and the reversible redox cycle properties of Ce. Abstract:Triethylamine, a crucial industrial raw material, poses significant threats to both the ecosystem and human health. However, detecting lower concentrations of TEA remains an arduous task. In this study, we report the facile hydrothermal and ultrasonic treatment synthesis of 2D SnSe2 micro-flower modified with 0D In2O3 nanoparticles to form SnSe2/In2O3 heterojunctions for the first time. The SnSe2/In2O3 sensor has a response value of 4.86 for 10 ppm TEA gas at 120 °C, with response and recovery times of 18 s and 79 s respectively, and detection limits as low as 100 ppb. In addition, the SnSe2/In2O3 sensor is essentially unaffected by humidity in the 30% RH to 60% RH range, and the SnSe2/In2O3 sensor response value decreases slightly in the 70% RH to 97% RH range, demonstrating excellent humidity tolerance. More importantly, the sensor maintained excellent cyclic-stability performance during a four-month cyclic stability test. The improved gas-sensitive performance can be attributed to the large number of n-n heterojunctions in the SnSe2/In2O3 material, which enhances the interfacial charge transfer, as well as the active-sites on the material surface. This work serves as a valuable complement to the TEA gas sensor and holds significant potential for detecting low concentrations of TEA at low temperatures in environmental sensing applications.
0D/2D CdS/ZnO composite with n-n heterojunction for efficient detection of triethylamine

Abstract:It is imperative to seek for novel materials with pronounced gas sensing performance towards triethylamine for the sake of human health. Herein, we successfully fabricate an outstanding triethylamine sensor based on CdS/ZnO composite with 0D/2D structure, which are prepared by in-situ growth of CdS quantum dots on ultra-thin ZnO nanosheets. The ratios between the two ingredients are adjusted and their effect is evaluated. The optimal sample exhibits the lowest operating temperature of 200 °C, the highest response value of ~20 and the fastest response time of 2 s. Besides, it also has the virtues of durable stability, excellent selectivity and superior anti-interference ability. The mechanism behind the aforementioned intriguing performance is investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Kelvin probe and density function theory (DFT) simulation. All the results verify that the enhanced gas sensing properties are derived from splendid 0D/2D structure, n-n heterojunction and large specific surface area. Additionally, this study opens an avenue for designing sensors with 0D/2D structure.

Abstract:Triethylamine (TEA) is an organic compound that is commonly used in industries, but its volatile, inflammable, corrosive, and toxic nature leads to explosions and tissue damage. A sensitive, accurate, and in situ monitoring of TEA is of great significance to production safety and human health. Metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) are widely used as gas sensors for volatile organic compounds due to their high bandgap and unique microstructure. This review aims to provide insights into the further development of MOSs by generalizing existing MOSs for TEA detection and measures to improve their sensing performance. This review starts by proposing the basic gas-sensing characteristics of the sensor and two typical TEA sensing mechanisms. Then, recent developments to improve the sensing performance of TEA sensors are summarized from different aspects, such as the optimization of material morphology, the incorporation of other materials (metal elements, conducting polymers, etc.), the development of new materials (graphene, TMDs, etc.), the application of advanced fabrication devices, and the introduction of external stimulation. Finally, this review concludes with prospects for using the aforementioned methods in the fabrication of high-performance TEA gas sensors, as well as highlighting the significance and research challenges in this emerging field.

Abstract:The freshness of seafood can be judged by detecting the concentration of triethylamine (TEA). In this work, 2D CuO porous nanosheets (CuO PNs) were prepared by a graphene oxide template method and their particle sizes were regulated by changing the calcination temperature. Their structure, morphology and gas sensing performances were investigated by various characterization methods. The response (Rg/Ra) of the gas sensor based on CuO PNs calcined at 700 oC was as high as 440 toward 100 ppm TEA at the operating temperature of 40 °C. The detection limit was as low as 0.25 ppm. In addition, the gas sensor has good selectivity and stability. The excellent TEA sensitivity is mainly resulted from the appropriate particle size and loose porous framework. This work not only paves the way to explore the novel low temperature TEA gas sensors, but also provides deep insight on improving the structure and properties of gas sensitive materials by controlling the calcination temperature.

Abstract:Monitoring of explosive and toxic triethylamine (TEA) is essential for environmental safety and human health. However, high sensitivity detection of TEA remains a huge challenge at low temperature or even room temperature. Here, we developed a CuO porous foam-based gas sensor for TEA detection at room temperature by defect engineering of oxygen vacancies. The CuO porous foam with rich surface oxygen vacancies have been synthesized through a sol-gel autocombustion method, and the formation mechanism of porous foam structure and rich oxygen vacancies of CuO have been investigated by various characterization methods. Moreover, the fabricated CuO foam gas sensor reveals the high response of 140.0 for 50 ppm TEA, a low detection limit of 0.5 ppm, excellent selectivity, good stability and repeatability at room temperature, which are ascribed to porous structure and rich surface oxygen vacancies of CuO foam. Importantly, the surface redox reaction model and density function theoretical calculation have been applied to deeply explore the sensing mechanism. This work can not only realize the ultra-sensitive sensing of TEA at room temperature, but also provide a novel strategy for the design of other ideal performance sensors at low operating temperatures.

Abstract:The detection of triethyl amine is necessary for environmental and human health concerns. However, sensitivity and selectivity are still challenges for real-time applications. Herein, ultrasensitive ZIF-8-derived Ag-sensitized ZnWO 4 /ZnO branched heterostructures were synthesized via a solvothermal-calcination process. The surface morphological investigation confirmed that ZnWO 4 nanorods randomly grown on 3D whiskers of ZnO and Ag nanoparticles are decorated, which enhanced the sensing performance by synergistic effect. The Ag@ZnWO 4 /ZnO sensor exhibited 56.15 sensor response towards 5 ppm of TEA at 80 °C, which is 3.86, 3.14, and 1.83 times over from ZIF-8, ZnO, and ZnWO 4 sensors respectively. Additionally, the sensitivity of Ag@ZnWO 4 /ZnO sensors for 1–5 ppm and 5–35 ppm range were found to be 11.96 and 13.78 response/ppm, respectively also, calculated limit of detection is 43 ppb earned. Furthermore, the fabricated sensor showed reliable consistency, outstanding repeatability, and stability. The surface area of branched heterostructure is high (83.39 g/cm 2 ) which enhances the interaction between TEA molecules to the sensing surface. Furthermore, the decoration of Ag nanoparticles is sensitized to a sensor and enhances the sensing performance.

Abstract:Triethylamine (TEA), as a common and widely used industrial raw material, is extremely hazardous to the environment and human health. Therefore, the development of a portable gas-sensing technology for high-efficiency detection of TEA is of great worth for human health and environmental monitoring. In this work, a mixed potential type TEA sensor was initially developed based on pyrochlore Gd2Zr2O7 solid state electrolyte and BiVO4 sensing electrode. The sensor generates high response values of − 62.2 mV and − 134.4 mV to 5 ppm and 100 ppm TEA at 500 °C, respectively. The response value of the sensor displays a logarithmic linear relationship with the concentration of TEA in the range of 1–100 ppm with the sensitivity of − 50.8 mV/decade. Besides, the sensor shows good response and recovery characteristics, and the response and recovery time to 10 ppm TEA is 10 s and 89 s, respectively. Moreover, the sensor possesses good humidity resistance, reproducibility and stability. The sensing behavior of the sensor is explained by the mixed potential sensing mechanism, which is confirmed by the measurement of the polarization curves. This work provides a good supplement for TEA gas sensor, which holds important application value for the sensitive detection of TEA in the environment.
