Abstract:Direct electrochemical detection in real food samples remains challenging due to the fouling and interference by abundant interference components. Herein, we report an electrochemical sensing platform based on binary assembly of silica nanochannels and polydimethylsiloxane that is able to detect Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real food samples without complex pretreatments. Using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the electrochemical detection consists of electro-deposition of metal species and subsequent anodic stripping in the modified silica-nanochannels. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges were obtained from 4 to 1500 mu g L-1 for Pb2+ and 30 to 900 mu g L-1 for Cd2+. The relative standard deviations were 2.9% and 3.6% for Pb2+ and Cd2+ of 300 mu g L-1. Without tedious pretreatments, the quantitative detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real juice and beverage samples was successfully performed, revealing that the developed sensor possesses excellent anti-interference and practicability properties for unprocessed food.

Abstract:Quantification of ultra-trace inorganic and organic species of lead and mercury in unpolluted environmental water is crucial to estimate the mobility, toxicity and bioavailability and interactions. Simultaneous pre-concentration of Pb and Hg species in pg L-1 levels followed by multi-elemental speciation analysis makes great sense to a large set of unstable samples because of time advantages. Herein simultaneous enrichment and speciation analysis of ultra-trace lead and mercury in water was developed by online solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SPE-HPLC-ICP-MS) for this aim. Pb(II), trimethyl lead (TML), triethyl lead (TEL), Hg(II), methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) were baseline separated in 11 min under gradient elution using 5 mM L-cysteine (Cys) at pH 2.5 in the 0-1 and 4-15 min and 5 mM Cys + 0.5 mM tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide solution at pH 2.5 in the 1-4 min. Lead and mercury species in 10 mL intact water samples were adsorbed on a 1 cm C18 enrichment column preconditioned with 10 mL of 1 mM 2-mercaptoethanol at 10 mL min-1, and then directly desorbed by the mobile phases. High enrichment factors (459 for Pb(II), 1248 for TML, 1627 for TEL, 2485 for Hg(II), 1984 for MeHg and 1866 for EtHg) were obtained with good relative standard deviations (<5%), leading to low LODs (0.001-0.011 ng L-1) and LOQs (0.004-0.036 ng L-1). Good accuracy of this method was validated by two certified reference materials of total lead in water (GBW08601) and total mercury in water (GBW08603) along with spiked recoveries (89-93%). The method was applied to analyze trace lead and mercury species in river, lake, tap and rain water, and purified and mineral water. Inorganic lead of 13-68 ng L-1 and inorganic mercury of 21-49 ng L-1 were measured in the nine water samples whereas TML, TEL and MeHg were not detected with 2-5 ng L-1 EtHg presented only in one river water and tap water. Abstract:Quantification of organolead compounds in environmental water is an essential task considering much higher toxicity and bioavailability of organolead species than inorganic plumbic ions. However, the speciation of ultra-trace organolead compounds at sub ng L-1 levels is challengeable for current instruments incorporating high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) and even offline enrichment that offer detection limits around several to tens of ng L-1. In this paper, an online solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled HPLC-ICP-MS method was developed for speciation analysis of trace lead in water. Graphene oxide bounded silica particles (GO@SiO2) was utilized as the SPE adsorbent because of its superior performance over graphene bounded silica particles and commercial C18 packing particles. High enrichment factors (1603 for TML and 1376 for TEL) were obtained when lead species in 10 mL sample was adsorbed by 1 mM sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) preconditioned GO@SiO2 at 10 mL min(-1) and then eluted by 5 mu L of 5 mM SDBS. Because of the highly efficient preconcentration, detection limits were downscaled to be 0.018 for TML and 0.023 ng L-1 for TEL with relative standard deviations below 5%. Additionally, the proposed method also yielded rapid separation of Pb(II), TML and TEL (8 min) by using green mobile phases (aqueous solutions of 5 mM sodium 1-pentanesulfonate at pH 2.5 with/without 4 mM tetrabutylammounium hydroxide). Upon successful application to fresh water, TML and TEL were only presented in the river water whereas Pb(II) was only existed in the tap water, along with accuracy validation by good spiked recoveries (93-106%). Abstract:A new solid phase microextraction (SPME) method utilizing nanodiamonds@NiCoFe-LDH for the pretreatment and extraction of Pb(II) before sample determination through FAAS was developed. NiCoFe-LDH was synthesized by using a hydrothermal synthesis technique and then combined with functionalized nanodiamonds. For the characterization of nanodiamonds@NiCoFe-LDH composite, FT-IR, FE-SEM, and XRD were utilized. The analytical parameters (pH level, amount of sorbent, concentration of eluent, volumes of sample and eluent, desorption time), i.e., pH = 8.0, 5.0 mg, 0.5 mol/L, 50 mL, 1.5 mL, and 0.5 min, respectively, were studied to set the maximum efficiency of the developed method. Additionally, matrix effects were taken into consideration during the evaluation process using the standard addition method. The limit of detection (LOD) and the preconcentration factor (PF) were obtained as 0.62 ng mL -1 and 25, respectively. To confirm the accuracy of the newly developed method, certified reference materials (CRMs) (NIST SRM 1515 apple leaves and BCR-505 estuarine water) were employed. %RSD was calculated as 2.0–8.0. The optimized method was successfully implemented to quantify Pb(II) in commercially available fruit juices of various brands and flavors procured from local markets in Kayseri, Turkey. Compared to previously reported methods, the developed method demonstrated exceptional sensitivity, achieving a remarkably low LOD.

An Eco‐Friendly Approach for Determination of Lead in Biological Samples after Deep Eutectic Solvent Extraction

Abstract:A deep eutectic solvent composed of choline chloride and oxalic acid in a molar ratio of 1 : 1 was employed to extract lead from biological samples for further determination by GF AAS. The extraction and instrumental parameters were optimized, the figures of merit were determined, and the method's accuracy was established. Besides presenting good accuracy, the proposed method is a simple, efficient, and eco‐friendly approach for Pb determination in biological samples. The present research proposes investigating deep eutectic solvents for extracting Pb from biological samples for further determination by GF AAS. Among the synthesized solvents, the DES obtained from choline chloride and oxalic acid (ChCl : Ox) in a molar ratio 1 : 1 presented the best lead (Pb) extraction efficiency. Subsequently, it was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). For extraction, the optimized conditions were: 40 mg of sample, 400 μL of DES (ChCl : Ox) added, and 30 min at 95±5 °C. The supernatant was diluted, and the Pb was determined by GF AAS. The optimized instrumental conditions for Pb determination were 900 °C and 2100 °C, pyrolysis and atomization temperatures, respectively, using Pd as a chemical modifier. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.04 and 0.12 μg g−1, respectively. The method's accuracy was evaluated by analyzing the certificate reference materials, and good agreement was obtained between the determined and certificate values. The greenness of the proposed method was evaluated by green star and eco‐scale metrics. Thus, the proposed method proved simple, efficient, and eco‐friendly for determining Pb in biological samples.

Abstract:Bisphenols, and mostly bisphenol A (BPA), are widely used in many consumer products. Due to their toxicity, BPA presents a noteworthy risk to the environment and human health. Despite these concerns, monitoring BPA proves challenging, particularly in highly complex matrices such as blood, because extraction and clean-up require multiple steps, the use of volatile organic solvents, and high associated costs. To overcome these limitations, this work discloses a novel, one-step and sustainable pretreatment technique of blood samples using hydrophobic eutectic solvents (HES). Systems composed of different HES, including thymol:menthol, benzyl alcohol:cyclohexanol, and decanoic acid:trioctylphosphine oxide at various mole ratios, combined with potassium citrate buffer aqueous solutions at different volume ratios, were carefully evaluated as three-phase partitioning (TPP) systems. The high performance of the HES-based systems for the pretreatment of blood samples was confirmed with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis, with a BPA recovery of (98 ± 3) % in the HES-rich phase, and with the interfering biological material precipitating at the liquid-liquid interphase. The green nature of the developed method was assessed using the Analytical GREENess Metric (AGREE) and the AGREE metrics of environmental impact of sample preparation (AGREEprep), scoring 0.59 and 0.63, respectively. The high pretreatment performance of blood samples offered by HES-based TPP systems, combined with its greener credentials, paves the way for their application in a variety of biomonitoring studies.

Abstract:We described the hyphenation of photo-induced chemical vapor generation with high performance liquid chromatography–atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC–AFS) for the quantification of inorganic mercury, methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg). In the developed procedure, formic acid in mobile phase was used for the photodecomposition of organomercury compounds and reduction of Hg2 + to mercury vapor under microwave/ultraviolet (MW/UV) irradiation. We optimized the proposed method studying the influence of several operating parameters, including the type of organic acid and its concentration, MW power, composition of HPLC mobile phase and catalytic action of TiO2 nanoparticles. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection were 0.15, 0.15 and 0.35 μg L− 1 for inorganic mercury, MeHg and EtHg, respectively. The developed method was validated by determination of the main analytical figures of merit and applied to the analysis of three certified reference materials. The online interfacing of liquid chromatography with photochemical-vapor generation–atomic fluorescence for mercury determination is simple, environmentally friendly, and represents an attractive alternative to the conventional tetrahydroborate (THB) system.

Abstract:Since lead is a highly toxic metal, it is necessary to detect its presence in different samples; unfortunately, analysis can be complicated if the samples contain concentrations below the detection limit of conventional analytical techniques. Solid phase extraction is a technique that allows the carrying out of a pre-concentration process and thus makes it easy to quantify analytes. This work studied the efficiency of sorption and preconcentration of lead utilizing polysulfone (PSf) fibers grafted with acrylic acid (AA). The best conditions for Pb(II) extraction were: pH 5, 0.1 mol L−1 of ionic strength, and 40 mg of sorbent (70% of removal). The sorbed Pb(II) was pre-concentrated by using an HNO3 solution and quantified using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The described procedure was used to obtain a correlation curve between initial concentrations and those obtained after the preconcentration process. This curve and the developed methodology were applied to the determination of Pb(II) concentration in a water sample contained in a handmade glazed clay vessel. With the implementation of the developed method, it was possible to pre-concentrate and determine a leached Pb(II) concentration of 258 μg L−1.

Abstract:A three-phase hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) was used to determine the trace amounts of Lead (II) in environmental water and tea drinks. In this approach, green solvent ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([HMIM]PF6) was used as membrane carrier that dissolved in hollow fiber pores. 1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) was placed in aqueous solution to form hydrophobic complex with Pb(II). Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used as stripping agent that it can form water-soluble complex with Pb(II). After extraction, the acceptor solution was directly injected into the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS) for analysis. Some important parameters that influence the extraction efficiency were investigated, such as PAN concentration, pH, EDTA concentration, stirring rate, extraction time, and interfering metal ions. Under the optimized conditions, an enrichment factor (EF) of 210 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.004 ng mL−1 were obtained. The calibration curve was linear in the range of 0.05–0.5 ng mL−1 (R = 0.999). The relative standard deviation (RSD) at the 0.12 ng mL−1 Pb(II) level is 4.5 % (n = 6). The proposed method was successfully applied to determination of Pb(II) in environmental water and tea drinks samples with satisfactory recoveries in the range of 94–105 %.

Abstract:HYPONATREMIA is a widely recognized complication of several central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Recent reports of hyponatremia in subarachnoid hemorrhage 1 and herpes simplex encephalitis 2 have added to a long list which includes meningitis, 3 head injuries, 4 brain tumors, 5 and a variety of other CNS illnesses. 6-8 The recognition of this complication is clinically important since hyponatremia per se may cause delirium, tremor, and convulsions, and thus create a problem in diagnosis or additionally insult an already damaged nervous system. It is less widely recognized that hyponatremia complicates "acute para-infectious" polyneuropathy, an illness usually considered to be restricted to the peripheral nervous system. 9 To our knowledge, only three such cases have been reported; 10-12 and in all, the lowered serum sodium produced no symptoms. Abstract:The optimum waveguide design for optical feedback reduction in a 10-Gb/s electroabsorption modulated laser has been discussed. A device with a 30-/spl mu/m-long window region exhibited as much as 10-15-dB reduction, which is verified by experimental results and the beam propagation calculation. Using a tilted waveguide with the window region, the feedback factor is reduced to as low as -40 dB. Besides low optical feedback, the tilted-and-straight modulator has a sufficient dc extinction ratio and a far-field profile allowing larger than 60% fiber-coupling efficiency.

Abstract:A simple and highly selective flow injection on-line pre-concentration and separation-flame atomic absorption spectrometric method was developed for routine analysis of trace amounts of lead in biological and environmental samples. The selective preconcentration of lead was achieved in a wide range of sample acidity (0.075 to > or = 3 mol L(-1)HNO3) on a microcolumn (145 microL) packed with a macrocycle immobilized on silica gel. The lead retained on the column was effectively eluted with an EDTA solution (0.03 mol L(-1), pH 10.5). Three kinds of potential interferences, i.e., preconcentration inferences from metal ions with an ionic radius similar to that of Pb(II) due to their competition for the cavity of the macrocyle, elution kinetic interferences from ions which form stable complexes with EDTA due to their competition for EDTA, and interferences in the atomizer from residual matrix, were evaluated and compared in view of the read-out mode of the analyte response (peak area vs peak height), column wash step (with vs without), column capacity (50 vs 145 microL), and column shape (conical vs cylindrical). The results showed that a combination of increase in column capacity, quantitation based on peak area, and use of dilute nitric acid for column wash before elution efficiently avoid the above-mentioned potential interferences. With the use of a 145 microL column the present system tolerated up to 0.1 g L(-1) Ba(II), 1 g L(-1) Sr(II), and at least 10 g L(-1) Fe(III), Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Al(III), K(I), Na(I), CaII), and Mg(II) in the sample digest. Further improvement of the interference tolerance can be achieved by increasing column capacity if more complicated samples need to be analyzed. At a sample loading rate of 3.9 mL min(-1) with 30-s preconcentration, an enrichment factor of 52, a detection limit (3s) of 5 micrograms L(-1) Pb in the digest and a sampling frequency of 63 h(-1) were obtained. The precision (RSD, n = 11) at the 200 micrograms L(-1) level was 1.9%. The enrichment factor and the detection limit can be further improved by increasing sample loading rate without degradation in the efficiency due to the favorable kinetics and low hydrodynamic impedance of the present system. The analytical results obtained by the proposed method for a number of biological and environmental standard reference materials were in good agreement with the certified and recommended values.

Abstract:A novel and effective adsorbent based on magnetic polymeric ionic liquid nanocomposite-coated hollow fiber membrane (MPILNC-HFM) was developed and applied for magnetic solid phase extraction of Pb (II) and Cu (II) from environmental water and fruit juice samples with microinjection sampling-flame atomic absorption spectrometry (MIS-FAAS). During extraction process, the adsorbent coated on the surface of the hollow fiber can be removed from the solution using tweezers without using a magnet. Additionally, the need to use a centrifuge during adsorption and desorption steps is also eliminated, thereby increasing the speed, simplicity, and efficiency of the extraction process. The nanocomposite characterized through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) analyses to ensure its applicability. The experimental parameters were optimized by applying one-variable-at the-time (OVAT) approach. Under optimal conditions, limits of detection were achieved 16.5 μg L −1 for Pb (II) and 20.4 μg L −1 for Cu (II), respectively, with relative standard deviations up to 7.9% and relative recoveries in the range of 91.8%–02.2%.

Abstract:The acid decomposition method was applied for the sample preparation of processed fruit juice. The decomposition of 15mL of juice sample using HNO3 and H2O2 was performed in a digester block with reflux system and heated at 200°C for 150min. The limits of detection were 0.03; 0.24; 0.8; 0.008; 0.026 and 0.056mgL-1 for Cr, Cu, K, Mg, Na and Zn, respectively and for Pb was 0.99μgL-1. The accuracy was evaluated by spiked experiments (80 to 119%). Four processed fruit juice samples commercialized in Brazil (strawberry, mango, peach, and orange) were analyzed and indicated the absence of Cr, Zn and Cu in the samples, except for Cu in strawberry juice. Pb was found in the mango juice sample (17.8±0.9μgL-1) and the concentration is below the maximum values recommended by Brazilian legislation for juices of citric fruits (0.3mgkg-1).

Abstract:The apple processing industry generates large quantities of organic waste, presenting a major source of organic contamination. Consequently, finding an effective solution for valorizing this waste has become a pressing issue. This study aims to address two key concerns: (i) solving an agricultural problem by efficiently using agri-food residue, and (ii) removing lead, an extremely toxic element, from contaminated waters to mitigate environmental pollution. Two biosorbents were tested: raw apple waste (RA), obtained from a mixture of apple varieties, and the same material after extracting valuable bioactive and reusable components, extracted apple (EA). The study evaluated the influence of pH, initial biosorbent mass, adsorption kinetics, and equilibrium isotherms. The results are very promising, showing a lead removal efficiency of 82 % for RA and 100 % for EA at a low initial concentration of the solution of 20 mg Pb2⁺/L and an optimal pH of 5 ± 0.5. The Langmuir model predicted a maximum adsorption capacity of 44.6 mg/g for RA and 48.6 mg/g for EA. These findings demonstrate that apple waste, even after selective extraction of valuable bioactive components, can be effectively used for environmental remediation on a practical scale.
Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Coupled to Miniaturized Microplasma Optical Emission Spectrometry for Detection of Mercury and Lead.

Abstract:Despite increased interest in microplasma atomic spectrometry over the past several years, its applications to field analysis of real samples still remain limited due to its low sensitivity. In this work, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) using PDMS/DVB fiber was used as a sample introduction method to improve the sensitivity of a miniature (6.0 cm length × 5.0 cm width × 2.8 cm height) low power (<10 W) microplasma point discharge optical emission spectrometer (PD-OES) for the determination of Hg and Pb after their derivatization with sodium tetraethylborate (NaBEt4). Owing to its advantages of combining sampling, separation, and preconcentration of analytes from sample matrices into a single step, HS-SPME not only simplifies sample pretreatment and the experimental setup but also eliminates interferences from matrices and water vapor while significantly improving analytical performance. In comparison to photochemical vapor generation PD-OES, limits of detection for Hg and Pb were enhanced by at least 100-fold, providing great potential for field analysis of these and other trace elements in real samples. Under optimal conditions, the limits of detection for Hg and Pb were 0.001 and 0.003 μg L-1, respectively, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) better than 2.1% and 4.5% at a concentration of 1 μg L-1. The accuracy of the HS-SPME-PD-OES system was validated by analysis of three Certified Reference Materials, including DORM-4 (Hg, 412 ± 36 μg kg-1; Pb, 404 ± 62 μg kg-1), TORT-3 (Hg, 292 ± 22 μg kg-1; Pb, 225 ± 18 μg kg-1) and SRM1568b (Hg, 5.53 ± 0.58 μg kg-1), providing analytical results in excellent agreement with certified values at the 95% confidence level. This method was also successfully used for the analysis of several real rice and water samples with satisfactory results (90-130% recoveries of added spikes).

Abstract:Lead hydride or plumbane (PbH4) generation was optimised by exploiting a simple flow-injection method coupled to atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS), and allowing ultra-trace lead determination. Plumbane was generated through two methods: (1) 5% (v/v) H2O2 was employed as oxidant with 1.5% (m/v) KBH4 as a reducing agent and 1.5% (v/v) HCl solution; (2) with 1.5% (m/v) K3[Fe(CN)6] as an oxidant/sensitiser, 1% (m/v) KBH4 as a reducing agent and 1.5% (v/v) HCl. Variables such as reagent concentrations, flow rates and sample and reagent volumes were tested and critically compared. The best results were obtained with potassium ferricyanide K3[Fe(CN)6], achieving a detection limit of 0.03 μg Pb L−1 and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.1%. The selected method was validated by analysis of certified reference materials such as SRM-2976 (mussel tissue) and BCR-610 (groundwater), with good agreement with the certified values. The developed methodology was successfully applied to different environmental sample matrices, such as rain water, tap water, ground water, spring water and drinking water, and biological samples, i.e., human blood, plasma and serum.

Abstract:Traces of heavy metals found in water resources, due to mining activities and e-waste discharge, pose a global threat. Conventional treatment processes fail to remove toxic heavy metals, such as lead, from drinking water in a resource-efficient manner when their initial concentrations are low. Here, we show that by using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae we can effectively remove trace lead from water via a rapid mass transfer process, called biosorption, achieving an uptake of up to 12 mg lead per gram of biomass in solutions with initial lead concentrations below 1 part per million. Through spectroscopic analyses, we found that the yeast cell wall plays a crucial role in this process, with its mannoproteins and β-glucans being the key potential lead adsorbents. Furthermore, by employing nanomechanical characterization in the yeast biomass, we discovered that biosorption is linked to an increase in cell wall stiffness. These findings open new opportunities for using environmentally friendly and abundant biomaterials for advanced water treatment targeting emerging contaminants.
