Abstract:A rapid and novel two-step dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction method was established for the separation and enrichment of trace cadmium, nickel, and copper in food and environmental water prior to determination by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the first microextraction step, carbon tetrachloride was employed to extract metal-diethyldithiocarbamate chelates from aqueous solution with ultrasound. In the following step, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were added and used to collect the analytes in the organic solvent. The sample pH, type and volume of extraction solvent, mass of magnetic nanoparticles, concentration of the chelating agent, concentration of sodium chloride, and sonication time were optimized. The linear dynamic range was from 0.01 to 20 micrograms per liter with correlation coefficients between 0.9990 and 0.9992. Enrichment factors were 78, 79, and 81 for cadmium, nickel, and copper, respectively. The limits of detection for cadmium, nickel, and copper were 0.007, 0.009, and 0.017 micrograms per liter, with relative standard deviations from 1.1 to 2.6 percent. The developed method was validated by the determination of cadmium, nickel, and copper in rice and mussel certified reference materials, food, and environmental water with satisfactory results.
Quantification of ultra-trace organolead species in environmental water by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with online solid-phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatographic separation

Abstract:Quantification of organolead compounds in environmental water is an essential task considering much higher toxicity and bioavailability of organolead species than inorganic plumbic ions. However, the speciation of ultra-trace organolead compounds at sub ng L-1 levels is challengeable for current instruments incorporating high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) and even offline enrichment that offer detection limits around several to tens of ng L-1. In this paper, an online solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled HPLC-ICP-MS method was developed for speciation analysis of trace lead in water. Graphene oxide bounded silica particles (GO@SiO2) was utilized as the SPE adsorbent because of its superior performance over graphene bounded silica particles and commercial C18 packing particles. High enrichment factors (1603 for TML and 1376 for TEL) were obtained when lead species in 10 mL sample was adsorbed by 1 mM sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) preconditioned GO@SiO2 at 10 mL min(-1) and then eluted by 5 mu L of 5 mM SDBS. Because of the highly efficient preconcentration, detection limits were downscaled to be 0.018 for TML and 0.023 ng L-1 for TEL with relative standard deviations below 5%. Additionally, the proposed method also yielded rapid separation of Pb(II), TML and TEL (8 min) by using green mobile phases (aqueous solutions of 5 mM sodium 1-pentanesulfonate at pH 2.5 with/without 4 mM tetrabutylammounium hydroxide). Upon successful application to fresh water, TML and TEL were only presented in the river water whereas Pb(II) was only existed in the tap water, along with accuracy validation by good spiked recoveries (93-106%). Abstract:Quantification of ultra-trace inorganic and organic species of lead and mercury in unpolluted environmental water is crucial to estimate the mobility, toxicity and bioavailability and interactions. Simultaneous pre-concentration of Pb and Hg species in pg L-1 levels followed by multi-elemental speciation analysis makes great sense to a large set of unstable samples because of time advantages. Herein simultaneous enrichment and speciation analysis of ultra-trace lead and mercury in water was developed by online solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SPE-HPLC-ICP-MS) for this aim. Pb(II), trimethyl lead (TML), triethyl lead (TEL), Hg(II), methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) were baseline separated in 11 min under gradient elution using 5 mM L-cysteine (Cys) at pH 2.5 in the 0-1 and 4-15 min and 5 mM Cys + 0.5 mM tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide solution at pH 2.5 in the 1-4 min. Lead and mercury species in 10 mL intact water samples were adsorbed on a 1 cm C18 enrichment column preconditioned with 10 mL of 1 mM 2-mercaptoethanol at 10 mL min-1, and then directly desorbed by the mobile phases. High enrichment factors (459 for Pb(II), 1248 for TML, 1627 for TEL, 2485 for Hg(II), 1984 for MeHg and 1866 for EtHg) were obtained with good relative standard deviations (<5%), leading to low LODs (0.001-0.011 ng L-1) and LOQs (0.004-0.036 ng L-1). Good accuracy of this method was validated by two certified reference materials of total lead in water (GBW08601) and total mercury in water (GBW08603) along with spiked recoveries (89-93%). The method was applied to analyze trace lead and mercury species in river, lake, tap and rain water, and purified and mineral water. Inorganic lead of 13-68 ng L-1 and inorganic mercury of 21-49 ng L-1 were measured in the nine water samples whereas TML, TEL and MeHg were not detected with 2-5 ng L-1 EtHg presented only in one river water and tap water. Abstract:A three-phase hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) was used to determine the trace amounts of Lead (II) in environmental water and tea drinks. In this approach, green solvent ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([HMIM]PF6) was used as membrane carrier that dissolved in hollow fiber pores. 1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) was placed in aqueous solution to form hydrophobic complex with Pb(II). Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used as stripping agent that it can form water-soluble complex with Pb(II). After extraction, the acceptor solution was directly injected into the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS) for analysis. Some important parameters that influence the extraction efficiency were investigated, such as PAN concentration, pH, EDTA concentration, stirring rate, extraction time, and interfering metal ions. Under the optimized conditions, an enrichment factor (EF) of 210 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.004 ng mL−1 were obtained. The calibration curve was linear in the range of 0.05–0.5 ng mL−1 (R = 0.999). The relative standard deviation (RSD) at the 0.12 ng mL−1 Pb(II) level is 4.5 % (n = 6). The proposed method was successfully applied to determination of Pb(II) in environmental water and tea drinks samples with satisfactory recoveries in the range of 94–105 %.

Abstract:A novel and rapid microextraction approach termed as ionic liquid-linked dual magnetic microextraction (IL-DMME), was developed for the atomic absorption spectrometric determination of lead. The developed method based on a combination of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (D-μ-SPE). In the first DLLME step, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [C4mim][PF6], was selected to extract the lead-pyrrolidine-dithiocarbamate (Pb-PDC) complex from sample solution by the assistance of vortex agitator. After the first step, fifty milligrams of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were added to extraction of the ionic liquid and Pb-PDC complex in aqueous solution. The effective factors in proposed IL-DMME procedure, including volume of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, amount of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles, vortex time, amount of ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate, sample volume and matrix effect were optimized in details. Under the optimal conditions, the method present has low detection limit (0.57 μg L(-1)), high preconcentration factor (160) and good repeatability (<7.5%, n=10). The accuracy of the developed method was evaluated by the analysis of the certified reference materials and addition-recovery tests. The method was successfully applied to the determination of lead in water, plant and hair samples.

Abstract:Sepabeads SP70 resin was impregnated with ionic liquid (BMIMPF6) was used for micro-solid phase extraction of lead(II) prior to its microsampling flame atomic absorption spectrometric determination. The optimum values of experimental parameters such as adsorbent amount, ligand amount, pH, eluent type and concentration, eluent volume, sample volume on recovery of lead were optimized as 5.0 mg, 0.15 mg, 7, HCl, 2 M, 0.4 mL, 50 mL, respectively. The analytical data of the method under optimal condition are as follows; limit of detection (LOD) (3 s/m, N: 10): 0.21 μg L−1, limit of quantification (LOQ) (10 s/m, N: 10): 0.69 μg L−1, preconcentration factor (PF): 125, and relative standard deviation (RSD%): 1.43%. The accuracy of the developed method was checked by addition-recovery tests to real samples and analysis of certified reference materials (Environment Canada TMDA-53.3 (fortified water) and 1570a trace elements in spinach leaves). The recovery values of these analyses are in the range of 90–98%. The method was successfully applied to determination of lead level of food and water samples.

Abstract:HYPONATREMIA is a widely recognized complication of several central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Recent reports of hyponatremia in subarachnoid hemorrhage 1 and herpes simplex encephalitis 2 have added to a long list which includes meningitis, 3 head injuries, 4 brain tumors, 5 and a variety of other CNS illnesses. 6-8 The recognition of this complication is clinically important since hyponatremia per se may cause delirium, tremor, and convulsions, and thus create a problem in diagnosis or additionally insult an already damaged nervous system. Abstract:The optimum waveguide design for optical feedback reduction in a 10-Gb/s electroabsorption modulated laser has been discussed. A device with a 30-/spl mu/m-long window region exhibited as much as 10-15-dB reduction, which is verified by experimental results and the beam propagation calculation. Using a tilted waveguide with the window region, the feedback factor is reduced to as low as -40 dB. Besides low optical feedback, the tilted-and-straight modulator has a sufficient dc extinction ratio and a far-field profile allowing larger than 60% fiber-coupling efficiency.

Abstract:In the current study, a ligand-less dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction technique assisted ultrasound and vortex equipment (DLLME-A-US-V) procedure was used for the simultaneous preconcentration and extraction of heavy metal ions. The proposed method was done by a natural hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent for the extraction of arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury ions without a complexing agent. The natural deep eutectic solvent was prepared from l -menthol (M) and salicylic acid (SA). The precursor of deep eutectic solvents strongly affects the extraction of metal ions. Among the studied solvents, hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents showed the highest extraction recovery. Under optimal experimental conditions, the method linearity, limits of detection (LOD), limits of quantification (LOQ), relative standard deviations (RSD %), enrichment factors (EF), and extraction recovery (% ER) were equal to 0.005–14 μg/L, 0.0043–0.0088 μg/L, 0.0143–0.0294 μg/L, 1.66–2.83 %, 112–120, and 90–96 %, respectively. The obtained coefficients of determination (r 2 ) were also higher than 0.991. This method was successfully applied to determine some heavy metals in food samples in the ultra-trace range with the recovery values of real samples being 93–108 %.

Abstract:A green, simple, rapid, and efficient ligandless air-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction procedure based on solidification of a ternary deep eutectic solvent was developed for the extraction of trace amounts of cadmium(II) and zinc(II) ions in aqueous samples prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. For this purpose, the deep eutectic solvent is formed by mixing sorbitol, menthol, and mandelic acid at a suitable mole ratio and after heating for a short time, a deep eutectic solvent with low density compared to water is synthesised. The synthesised solvent is used as a chelating agent and also as an extraction solvent. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the linear ranges were obtained in the ranges of 0.5–12.5 and 0.5–10.0 µg L−1 for Zn(II) and Cd(II), respectively. The relative standard deviations (n = 6, C = 2.5 µg L−1 of each cation) were 4.2% and 3.4%, for Cd(II) and Zn(II), respectively. Moreover, the obtained detection limits were 0.15 and 0.12 µg L−1 for Cd(II) and Zn(II), respectively. The accuracy of the developed method was studied by analysing SPS-WW2 Batch 108 water as a certified reference material. Abstract:We described the hyphenation of photo-induced chemical vapor generation with high performance liquid chromatography–atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC–AFS) for the quantification of inorganic mercury, methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg). In the developed procedure, formic acid in mobile phase was used for the photodecomposition of organomercury compounds and reduction of Hg2 + to mercury vapor under microwave/ultraviolet (MW/UV) irradiation. We optimized the proposed method studying the influence of several operating parameters, including the type of organic acid and its concentration, MW power, composition of HPLC mobile phase and catalytic action of TiO2 nanoparticles. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection were 0.15, 0.15 and 0.35 μg L− 1 for inorganic mercury, MeHg and EtHg, respectively. The developed method was validated by determination of the main analytical figures of merit and applied to the analysis of three certified reference materials. The online interfacing of liquid chromatography with photochemical-vapor generation–atomic fluorescence for mercury determination is simple, environmentally friendly, and represents an attractive alternative to the conventional tetrahydroborate (THB) system.

Abstract:Background:: Cadmium (Cd2+) is considered to be one of the most important hazardous heavy metals due to its toxicity for living organisms at low concentration levels. Therefore, the estimation of trace Cd2+ in different types of various samples is a very important objective for chemists using effective methods. In the present work, a novel, green, easy and fast ultrasoundassisted ionic liquid-dispersive liquid phase microextraction technique (UA-IL-DLPME) was developed to preconcentrate and determine trace quantities of cadmium (Cd2+) ions from real samples, prior to detection by FAAS. Methods: The proposed technique is based on utilization of ionic liquid (IL) (1-hexyl-3- methylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate [HMIM][FAP]) as an extraction solvent for Cd2+ ions after complexation with 2-(6-methylbenzothiazolylazo)-6-nitrophenol (MBTANP) at pH 7.0. The impact of different analytical parameters on the microextraction efficiency was investigated. The validation of the proposed procedure was verified by the test of two certified reference materials (TMDA-51.3 fortified water, SRM spinach leaves 1570A) applying the standard addition method. Results: In the range of 2.0-200 μg L−1, the calibration graph was linear. Limit of detection, preconcentration factor and the relative standard deviation (RSD %, 100 μg L-1, n=5) as precision was 0.1 μg L-1, 100 and 3.1%, respectively. Conclusion: Green UA-IL-DLPME method was developed and applied to preconcentrate and determine trace quantities of Cd2+ in real water, vegetables and hair samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:A hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent-based liquid-phase microextraction approach for the determination of ultra-trace arsenic (total) in foods by an electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometry was developed. Various deep eutectic solvents based on tetraoctylammonium bromide and fatty acids (heptanoic, octanoic, nonanoic, decanoic acids) were studied as extraction solvents for preconcentration of arsenic (V) from mineralizates obtained after a microwave digestion of food samples. Phenomenon of ion-pairs formation between dihydroarsenate and precursor of deep eutectic solvent (tetraoctylammonium) and mass-transfer of the ion-pairs into deep eutectic solvent phase was presented for the first time. The proposed approach allowed to preconcentrate analyte into the deep eutectic solvent phase without the use of additional organic solvents (emulsifier agents or dispersive solvent), chelating and reducing agents. It was found, that the deep eutectic solvent based on tetraoctylammonium bromide and heptanoic acid provided more effective preconcentration of analyte from mineralizates (95% extraction recovery, 57-fold enrichment factor). The obtained limit of detection, calculated as a triple signal-to-noise ratio, was 10 ng L-1. The microextraction procedure was applied for the determination of trace arsenic in rice and wheat grains samples.

Abstract:Toxicity, mobility, bioavailability and biofunctions of chromium, cadmium, mercury and lead are heavily dependent upon their specific chemical forms, leading to a high demand to metal speciation analysis rather than total quantification. Simultaneous speciation analysis of multiple metal(loid)s is attractive to a large sample capacity containing unstable analytes due to its economic and environmental advantages over the conventional single elemental strategies. In this work, an analytical method integrating online solid phase extraction into high performance liquid chromatography interfaced with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to simultaneously preconcentrate and quantify Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb forms in pg L-1 levels in water was developed. Cr (III + VI), Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II), methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg), and trimethyl (TML) and triethyl lead (TEL) were captured by the C18 adsorbent (equilibrated with 10 mL of 1.0 mM 2-hydroxyethanethiol at 10 mL min-1) and eluted by mobile phase (5.0 mM Cys at pH 2.0), then completely separated on the C18 column within 8.0 min and eventually determined by ICP-MS. Low limits of detection (0.001-0.007 ng L-1) and quantification (0.003-0.023 ng L-1), good relative standard deviations (<4%) and high enrichment factors (827-2656 folds) were obtained with good linearities. Three reference materials of total cadmium (GBW08602), total mercury (GBW08603) and total lead (GBW08601) in water were analyzed by the developed method to validate the accuracy with good agreement with certified values and satisfactory recoveries (92-100%). This method was proved feasible by the determination of Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb compounds in drinking water, river water, pond water and tap water.

Abstract:Hydrophilic deep eutectic solvents based on choline chloride, carboxylic acids, and water are studied as "green" extractants for the liquid–liquid microextraction of lead from vegetable oils. An automated method is proposed for the microextraction of lead from vegetable oils into a ternary deep eutectic solvent based on choline chloride, lactic acid, and water. The carboxylic acid in the extractant ensured the effective mass transfer of lead due to complexation. Water in the extractant made it possible to reduce its viscosity to automate liquid–liquid microextraction. The analytical capabilities of the developed method are demonstrated on an example of determining lead in vegetable oils by atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization. The limit of detection (3σ) for lead is 0.3 μg/kg. The developed method does not require sample mineralization.

Abstract:This work investigates the potential of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as an adsorbent for separation and preconcentration of trace amounts of lead from water samples prior to electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) determination. No chemical modifier is required in graphite furnace. Pb(II) ion was adsorbed on magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles in the pH range of 5.5–6.5, and then magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were easily separated from the aqueous solution by applying an external magnetic field; so, no filtration or centrifugation was necessary. After extraction and collection of MNPs, the analyte ions were eluted using HNO 3 1.0 mol L −1 . Several factors that may affect the preconcentration and extraction process, such as pH, type, and volume of eluent, amount of MNPs, sample volume, salting out effect, and interference ions were studied and optimized. Under the best experimental conditions, linearity was maintained between 0.005–0.5 ng mL −1 . Detection limits for lead were 0.8 ng L −1 based on . The relative standard deviation of seven replicate measurements of 0.05 ng mL −1 of Pb(II) ions was 3.8%. Finally, the method was successfully applied to extraction and determination of lead ions in the water and standard samples.

Abstract:<span>Copper (II) and lead (II) ions are complexed with 1-nitroso-2-naphthol and preconcentrated on the magnetic activated carbon cloth prior to its flame atomic absorption spectrometric detection. Analytical parameters such as model solution pH, adsorbent amount, eluent type and volume, ligand amount, sample volume and matrix effect were determined. As a result of these studies, quantitative recovery of analyte ions was obtained at pH 4.0. Quantitative recovery was observed with 2 mL 3 M HNO<sub>3</sub> solution as eluent. The developed method has been applied to various water and food samples and the accuracy of the developed method has been confirmed by certified reference material analysis and addition recovery studies. The method has been applied to the separation and preconcentration of copper (II) and lead (II) ions in water and food samples.</span>

An Eco‐Friendly Approach for Determination of Lead in Biological Samples after Deep Eutectic Solvent Extraction

Abstract:A deep eutectic solvent composed of choline chloride and oxalic acid in a molar ratio of 1 : 1 was employed to extract lead from biological samples for further determination by GF AAS. The extraction and instrumental parameters were optimized, the figures of merit were determined, and the method's accuracy was established. Besides presenting good accuracy, the proposed method is a simple, efficient, and eco‐friendly approach for Pb determination in biological samples. The present research proposes investigating deep eutectic solvents for extracting Pb from biological samples for further determination by GF AAS. Among the synthesized solvents, the DES obtained from choline chloride and oxalic acid (ChCl : Ox) in a molar ratio 1 : 1 presented the best lead (Pb) extraction efficiency. Subsequently, it was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). For extraction, the optimized conditions were: 40 mg of sample, 400 μL of DES (ChCl : Ox) added, and 30 min at 95±5 °C. The supernatant was diluted, and the Pb was determined by GF AAS. The optimized instrumental conditions for Pb determination were 900 °C and 2100 °C, pyrolysis and atomization temperatures, respectively, using Pd as a chemical modifier. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.04 and 0.12 μg g−1, respectively. The method's accuracy was evaluated by analyzing the certificate reference materials, and good agreement was obtained between the determined and certificate values. The greenness of the proposed method was evaluated by green star and eco‐scale metrics. Thus, the proposed method proved simple, efficient, and eco‐friendly for determining Pb in biological samples.

Abstract:A novel and effective adsorbent based on magnetic polymeric ionic liquid nanocomposite-coated hollow fiber membrane (MPILNC-HFM) was developed and applied for magnetic solid phase extraction of Pb (II) and Cu (II) from environmental water and fruit juice samples with microinjection sampling-flame atomic absorption spectrometry (MIS-FAAS). During extraction process, the adsorbent coated on the surface of the hollow fiber can be removed from the solution using tweezers without using a magnet. Additionally, the need to use a centrifuge during adsorption and desorption steps is also eliminated, thereby increasing the speed, simplicity, and efficiency of the extraction process. The nanocomposite characterized through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) analyses to ensure its applicability. The experimental parameters were optimized by applying one-variable-at the-time (OVAT) approach. Under optimal conditions, limits of detection were achieved 16.5 μg L −1 for Pb (II) and 20.4 μg L −1 for Cu (II), respectively, with relative standard deviations up to 7.9% and relative recoveries in the range of 91.8%–02.2%.

Abstract:Determination of trace lead from environmental samples was carried out by solidified floating organic drop microextraction for preconcentration before analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The determination of lead from environmental samples, even at trace levels, was possible with an ordinary flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS). The lead formed a hydrophobic complex with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), and this hydrophobic complex was extracted into the 1-dodecanol drop. Parameters affecting analytical performance have been studied. The optimum pH value was 3.5. The optimum sample volume, SDBS concentration, and extraction solvent volume were 75 mL, 50 mM in dodecanol, and 75 μL, respectively. The optimum extraction time was determined as 30 min, the optimum extraction temperature was 45 °C, the optimum mixing speed was 650 rpm and the ideal extraction phase volume was 0.50 mL. Methanol has been shown to be effective when used as a diluent. Using the optimum conditions, the enhancement factor was 106, and the limit of detection (3s) and precision were 3.3 ng/mL and 2.3% ( n = 9,15 ng/mL), respectively. The limit of quantification (LOQ) (10s) was 10 ng/mL and the linear working range was 15-100 ng/mL. The accuracy was evaluated by certified reference material analysis. The optimized method was applied to the determination of Pb(II) from environmental water samples. This method follows the principles of green analytical chemistry.
