Abstract:The porous spinel oxide nanoparticles, MnCo2O4, were synthesized by citrate gel combustion technique. Morphology, crystallinity and Co/Mn content of modified electrode was characterized and determined by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction pattern analysis (XRD), simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA). Nanoparticles were used for modification of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and new sensor was applied for simultaneous determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in water samples with the linear sweep anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV).The factors such as pH, deposition potential and deposition time are optimized. Under optimal conditions the wide linear concentration range from 0.05 to 40 μmol/dm3was obtained for Pb(II), with limit of detection (LOD) of 8.06 nmol/dm3 and two linear concentration ranges were obtained for Cd(II), from 0.05 to 1.6 μmol/dm3 and from 1.6 to 40 μmol/dm3, with calculated LOD of 7.02 nmol/dm3. The selectivity of the new sensor was investigated in the presence of interfering ions. The sensor is stable and it gave reproducible results. The new sensor was succesfully applied on determination of heavy metals in natural waters.
Bismuth-Coated Thick-Film Carbon Electrodes for the Detection of Lead and Cadmium by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry

Abstract:This paper reported the detection of trace heavy metal ions, lead and cadmium, with in-situ bismuth-coated thick-film carbon electrodes by anodic stripping voltammetry. The influence of carbon electrodes pretreatment, bismuth ion concentrations, preconcentration time upon the stripping responses were investigated. Experimental results indicate that anodic stripping voltametric measurements of lead and cadmium on bismuth-coated carbon electrodes yield well-defined peaks, whose peak potential and height are in a manner analogous to those of in-situ plated mercury-film electrodes. Using bismuth instead of mercury a-voids the pollution. Due to the low cost of thick-film process, the thick-film carbon electrode could be used as disposable device.
Lab-made screen-printed electrode with conductive ink based on carbon nanomaterials for simultaneous electrochemical analysis of bisphenol A, catechol, and 4-nitrophenol

Abstract:Disposable, flexible, and low-cost, lab-made screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) using conductive inks based on carbon nanomaterials were applied to determine environmental pollutants in water. Several compositions of carbon conductive inks were investigated, and the best one was composed of nanographite, graphene nanoplatelets, and alkyd resin (40:10:50%, w/w/w). Under optimized conditions using square wave voltammetry, calibration curves were constructed (individually and simultaneously) for detection of bisphenol A (BPA), catechol (CC), and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), presented linear responses in the 2.5 to 200 μmol L -1 range. From the individual curves, the LODs obtained for BPA, CC, and 4-NP were 1.7, 6.9, and 2.8 μmol L -1 , respectively. The proposed sensors were chemically and microscopically characterized and evaluated for their analytical performance, including stability (over 70 days, with RSD < 10%), reproducibility (RSD < 10% for 10 SPEs), possible interferences (relative error < 12%), and hazardous phenolic pollutants on-site analysis in water samples (RE < 10%).
Stripping voltammetric determination of cadmium and lead ions based on a bismuth oxide surface-decorated nanoporous bismuth electrode

Abstract:Ultrasensitive detection of heavy metal ions through electrochemical methods is a longstanding research topic. One of the most compelling subjects is preparation of modified electrodes with a high specific surface area as well as fast response characteristics. In this study, novel bismuth oxide surface-decorated nanoporous bismuth (Bi2O3@NPBi) was prepared through a typical dealloying method, where a bicontinuous ligament–channel structure greatly improved the electrically active surface area and electron conduction. The Bi2O3@NPBi-modified electrode was employed to detect heavy metal ions using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV), and the corresponding limits of detection (LOD) were 0.02 and 0.03 µg/L for simultaneous detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+. Due to the high cycling stability and capacity of bismuth oxides, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the response currents using Bi2O3@NPBi was less than 4.16%, which is very considerably lower than the RSD of NPBi. Furthermore, a Bi2O3@NPBi-modified electrode was used to determine the concentration of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in tap water samples, and excellent recovery figures were obtained as there is little interference from other co-existing ions. In conclusion, the Bi2O3@NPBi-modified electrode showed good reusability and feasibility for quality assurance in agricultural, food and environmental applications.

Abstract:The use of insoluble bismuth salts, typically BiPO4, is known to be a viable alternative to classical Bi3+ ion electrochemical reduction for the preparation of bismuth film electrodes (BiFE) on screen-printed electrodes. The freshly prepared electrodes are indefinitely stable, and the active bismuth film is simply formed by in situ reduction. Two aspects are still to be investigated, namely the bismuth distribution on the working electrode and the possible residual presence of the counteranion, namely phosphate. High-vacuum techniques such as electron microscopy or spectroscopy, which are commonly employed for this purpose, cannot be safely used: the bismuth surface is well-known to reconstruct and recrystallize under the electron beam in vacuum. Here, we demonstrate the suitability and the effectiveness of laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS, a technique that vaporizes and analyzes the surface material under flowing helium at atmospheric pressure) for the characterization of BiFE. Fast and stable measurements of bismuth and phosphorous distribution are achieved with the advantage of a minimum alteration of the sample surface, avoiding possible interferences. This investigation evidenced how, upon reductive activation, the bismuth film is distributed with a radial symmetry and the phosphate counteranion is completely absent on the working electrode surface.
Screen-Printed Sensors Modified with Nafion and Mesoporous Carbon for Electrochemical Detection of Lead in Blood

Abstract:Lead (Pb) has long been acknowledged as a systemic toxicant, with pronounced health impacts observed even at low exposure levels, particularly in children. Adverse effects include diminished cognitive function, altered behavior, and developmental delays. Consequently, it is imperative to conduct regular monitoring of Blood Lead Levels (BLLs). In this work, we report on an electrochemical sensor based on screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) coated with Nafion and mesoporous carbon (MC). The sensor system uses simple sample preparation (acidification and dilution of whole blood), minimal sample volume (a few blood drops, 200 μl), and swift time-to-results (1 h). A limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 0.3 μg dL −1 Pb was achieved in whole blood. To demonstrate the practical utility of our sensor system, we evaluated its performance in the analysis of blood samples collected from children (n = 25). Comparative analysis with the laboratory-based gold standard method of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) demonstrated approximately 77% accuracy and 94% precision. We anticipate that our approach will serve as a valuable tool for more frequent BLL monitoring, particularly in communities where access to laboratory testing is impractical or expensive.

Abstract:Screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) are reliable, portable, affordable, and versatile electrochemical platforms for the real-time analytical monitoring of emerging analytes in the environmental, clinical, and agricultural fields. The aim of this study was to evaluate the electrochemical behavior of gold screen-printed electrodes (SPGEs) modified with molecules containing amino (Tr-N) or α-aminophosphonate (Tr-P) groups for the selective and sensitive detection of the toxic metal ions Pb2+ and Hg2+ in aqueous samples. After optimizing the analytical parameters (conditioning potential and time, deposition potential and time, pH and concentration of the supporting electrolyte), anodic square wave stripping voltammetry (SWASV) was used to evaluate and compare the electrochemical performance of bare or modified electrodes for the detection of Hg2+ and Pb2+, either alone or in their mixtures in the concentration range between 1 nM and 10 nM. A significative improvement in the detection ability of Pb2+ ions was recorded for the amino-functionalized gold sensor SPGE-N, while the presence of a phosphonate moiety in SPGE-P led to greater sensitivity towards Hg2+ ions. The developed sensors allow the detection of Pb2+ and Hg2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.41 nM and 35 pM, respectively, below the legal limits for these heavy metal ions in drinking water or food, while the sensitivity was 5.84 µA nM-1cm-2 and 10 µA nM-1cm-2, respectively, for Pb2+ and Hg2+. The reported results are promising for the development of advanced devices for the in situ and cost-effective monitoring of heavy metals, even in trace amounts, in water resources.

Abstract:Lead poses severe effects on living organisms, and since Pb2+ ions tend to accumulate in different organs, it is crucial to monitor Pb2+ concentration in samples such as water and soil. One of the approaches is the utilization of biosensors combined with aptamer-based layers for the electrochemical detection of lead ions. Herein, we present the studies of applying miniaturized screen-printed transducers as solid surfaces to fabricate aptamer layers. As the research is the direct continuation of our previous studies regarding the use of gold disk electrodes, the working parameters of elaborated aptasensors were defined, including the range of linear response (10–100 nM), selectivity as well as stability, regeneration, and feasibility of application for the analysis of real samples. This was achieved using voltammetric techniques including cyclic and square-wave voltammetry in the presence of methylene blue redox indicator.

Abstract:A copper film-modified, carboxyl-functionalized, and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH)-modified screen-printed carbon electrode (CuF/MWCNTs/SPCE) was used for lead determination using anodic stripping voltammetry. The main parameters were investigated and optimized during the development of the research procedure. The most optimal electrolyte concentrations were determined to be 0.4 M HCl and 6.3 × 10−5 M Cu(II). The optimal parameters for voltammetric stripping measurements are as follows: an accumulation potential of −0.7 V; an accumulation time of 120 s; and a pulse amplitude and pulse time of 120 mV and 2 ms, respectively. The effect of surface active substances and humic substances as potential interferents present in aqueous environmental samples was investigated. The validation of the procedure was carried out using certified reference materials, like waste water SPS-WW1 and environmental matrix TM-25.5. In addition, the developed procedure was applied to investigate lead recovery from natural environmental water, such as rivers and lakes.

Abstract:Quantification of organolead compounds in environmental water is an essential task considering much higher toxicity and bioavailability of organolead species than inorganic plumbic ions. However, the speciation of ultra-trace organolead compounds at sub ng L-1 levels is challengeable for current instruments incorporating high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) and even offline enrichment that offer detection limits around several to tens of ng L-1. In this paper, an online solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled HPLC-ICP-MS method was developed for speciation analysis of trace lead in water. Graphene oxide bounded silica particles (GO@SiO2) was utilized as the SPE adsorbent because of its superior performance over graphene bounded silica particles and commercial C18 packing particles. High enrichment factors (1603 for TML and 1376 for TEL) were obtained when lead species in 10 mL sample was adsorbed by 1 mM sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) preconditioned GO@SiO2 at 10 mL min(-1) and then eluted by 5 mu L of 5 mM SDBS. Because of the highly efficient preconcentration, detection limits were downscaled to be 0.018 for TML and 0.023 ng L-1 for TEL with relative standard deviations below 5%. Additionally, the proposed method also yielded rapid separation of Pb(II), TML and TEL (8 min) by using green mobile phases (aqueous solutions of 5 mM sodium 1-pentanesulfonate at pH 2.5 with/without 4 mM tetrabutylammounium hydroxide). Upon successful application to fresh water, TML and TEL were only presented in the river water whereas Pb(II) was only existed in the tap water, along with accuracy validation by good spiked recoveries (93-106%). A novel nanoporous bismuth electrode sensor for in situ heavy metal detection

Abstract:A novel modified nanoporous bismuth electrode (modified-NPBiE) sensor was prepared by consecutive procedures which consist of bismuth (Bi) and tin (Sn) electroplating, thermal treatment for alloying Bi-Sn film, and selective chemical dealloying of Sn. The newly prepared modified-NPBiE sensor exhibited improved lifetime (2.7 times longer than a conventional nanoporous Bi-filmed electrode with over 40 repeated measurements) sensor with lower relative standard deviation (RSD), indicating enhanced stability and reproducibility for heavy metal detection. Using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV), two noticeable peaks were observed at −0.65 V and −0.45 V associated with stripping currents of Cd2+ and Pb2+ in 0.1 M acetate buffer solution at pH 4.6, respectively. The calibration curves showed strong correlations with respect to various concentrations of Cd2+ and Pb2+ with the limit of detection (LOD) of 1.3 ppb for Cd2+ and 1.5 ppb for Pb2+. The newly modified-NPBiE sensor was then successfully applied for detecting Cd2+ and Pb2+ in a tap water environment and exhibited an acceptable performance for measuring heavy metals with a good reliability.

Abstract:Developing a reliable, sensitive and portable electrochemical sensor for precise determination of trace heavy metal ions in water is an attractive challenge. In this work, an integrated three–electrode sensor based on screen–printed gold working electrode (SPAuE) ex–situ electroplated bismuth film was developed via a facile and simple process for the determination of trace Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The bismuth film was deposited on SPAuE at a potential of -0.08 V (Bi/SPAuE-0.08V). The results exhibited the sensor with a wide linear range (from 1 to 120 μg L-1) for the simultaneous detection of these three heavy metal ions. Besides, the detection limits of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) for the sensor were respectively found to be 0.04 μg L-1, 0.02 μg L-1, and 0.05 μg L-1 (S/N = 3). The proposed sensor revealed good anti–interference ability, satisfactory repeatability with RSDs of less than 2.5% (n = 12), excellent reproducibility with RSDs of less than 2.5% (n = 6), and considerable stability. The detection accuracy of the Bi/SPAuE-0.08V based sensor was further evaluated via atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Due to its simplicity in process, high detection performance and excellent reliability, such sensors are expected to find utility in portable heavy metal detection applications.

Abstract:A two-dimensional (2D) Sb-modified screen-printed carbon nanofibers electrode (2D Sbexf-SPCNFE) was developed to improve the stripping voltammetric determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II), taking advantage of the synergistic effect between the two nanomaterials. The surface morphology of the 2D Sbexf-SPCNFE was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The analytical performance of 2D Sbexf-SPCNFE was compared to those presented by screen-printed carbon electrodes modified with 2D Sbexf (2D Sbexf-SPCE) and the corresponding bare electrodes: screen-printed carbon nanofibers electrode (SPCNFEbare) and screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCEbare). After optimizing the experimental conditions, the 2D Sbexf-SPCNFE exhibited much better analytical parameters compared to the other assessed sensors. Analysis in 0.01 mol L−1 HCl (pH = 2) using 2D Sbexf-SPCNFE showed excellent linear behavior in the concentration range of 2.9 to 85.0 μg L−1 and 0.3 to 82.0 μg L−1 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The limits of detection after 240 s deposition time for Cd(II) and Pb(II) were 0.9 and 0.1 μg L−1, and sensitivities between 1.5 and 3 times higher than those displayed by SPCEbare, SPCNFEbare, and 2D Sbexf-SPCE were obtained. Finally, the 2D Sbexf-SPCNFE was successfully applied to the determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) traces in a certified estuarine water sample.

Abstract:This study presents a novel Aluminium foil-based electrode characterized by its affordability, flexibility, and ease of modification with carboxylic moiety-containing organic molecules. Upon foil modification with Aluminium nanoparticles and EDTA (AlNP-EDTA/AlE), the modified electrode exhibits remarkable activity in the oxidation of lead at potentials around −0.4 V. The lead signal is derived from the oxidation of lead deposited on the electrode surface using anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The addition of EDTA to AlNP/AlE increased the anodic peak current of lead by more than 500 %. The surface characterization of the electrode was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and infrared spectroscopy (IR), while its electroactive properties were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Optimal operating parameters include pH 2.1, square-wave voltammetry (SWV) with an accumulation time of 60 s and an accumulation potential of −0.8 V. A low detection limit of 0.20 μmol/L and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.0 % were achieved using five different electrodes. The effectiveness of AlNP-EDTA/AlE was further demonstrated with consistent results in biological samples spiked with Pb.

Abstract:A pencil-lead bismuth-film electrode is constructed by introducing a pencil-lead electrode and combing the bismuth with high resolution and good sensitivity .The Pb2+ is detected by using a pencil core bismuth electrode based on the anodic stripping voltammetry . The experimental conditions are optimized , and the stripping voltammogram with good peak shape stripping signal is obtained . The pencil-lead bismuth-film electrode shows a good linear relationship with the Pb2+ response ,the linear range is between 4—10 μg/L and 15—85 μg/L ,and the detection limit of Pb2+ reaches 0 .46 μg/L .The detection results meet the drinking water requirements of the European Union ,United States Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization .

Abstract:In this study, two novel bidentate Schiff base ligands, namely the (1 E,1'E,2E,2'E)-N,N'-(butane-1,4-diyl)bis(3-(2-methoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-imine) (L1) and the tetradentate Schiff base ligand namely N1,N2-bis(2-(((1E,2E)-3-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)allylidene)amino)ethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (L2), were successfully synthesized through a simple procedure. The synthesized Schiff base ligands were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. Moreover, the thermal behavior was studied through thermogravimetric (TG)/differential thermal gravimetric (DTG)/differential thermal analyses (DTA) analyses under nitrogen atmosphere. Subsequently, the synthesized ligands (L1, L2) features and performances as electrochemical sensors for the detection of heavy metal ions (HMIs) have been investigated. A different behavior was noticed using these two ligands, with L1 which demonstrated to be the best candidate for developing a modified screen-printed carbon electrode (L1/SPCE) electrochemical Pb2+ sensor. To improve further the performances, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were depositated by an electrochemical process on the L1/SPCE platform. The developed AuNPs-L1/SPCE sensor displayed enhanced lead ion sensing with a high sensitivity of 56.78 μA μM-1 cm-2 and a detection limit of 0.298 μM. This novel sensor demonstrated promising performances for the detection of Pb2+ ions in real seawater with no sample treatment.

Electrochemical Detection of Lead in Real Samples Using Carbon Nanostructure and Inactivated E. coli as Low-Cost Sensitive Biosensor with High Electrocatalytic Performance

Abstract:A new electrochemical sensor based on inactivated Escherichia coli (E. coli) was prepared for the determination of lead ions (Pb 2+ ) in real samples. The biorecognition element was obtained by inactivation of the E. coli bacteria. The biosensing platform was constructed by mixing bovine serum albumin (BSA) with inactivated Escherichia coli ( E. coli*) deposited on the surface of platinum (Pt) electrode modified with conductive poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)-gold nanoparticles MWCNTs-PVDF-AuNPs/ E. coli* -BSA. The impedance characterization of the nanocomposite reveals performance improvements in the charge transfer process (Ret = 20 Ω) compared to the use of Pt bare electrode (Ret = 115 Ω). Moreover, the bioelectrochemical reaction between the released-enzymes from inactivated E. coli* and the inhibitor (Pb 2+ ) was confirmed and successfully demonstrates the inhibition system. The electrochemical detection of Pb 2+ was performed by square wave voltammetry (SWV) with a detection limit of 0.13 μg/l and a quantification limit of 0.43 μg/l. The sensor was applied to detect lead ions in real samples like waste-water and lipstick with an excellent selectivity against copper ions. The biosensor is highly sensitive (30.1 μA/ppb.cm 2 ) with good stability and reliable reproducibility with a relative standard deviation (RSD = 0.23%) for monitoring lead ions and seems operational for monitoring other hazardous materials.

Abstract:Heavy metals constitute pollutants that are particularly common in air, water, and soil. They are present in both urban and rural environments, on land, and in marine ecosystems, where they cause serious environmental problems since they do not degrade easily, remain almost unchanged for long periods, and bioaccumulate. The detection and especially the quantification of metals require a systematic process. Regular monitoring is necessary because of seasonal variations in metal levels. Consequently, there is a significant need for rapid and low-cost metal determination methods. In this study, we compare and analytically validate absorption spectrometry with a sensitive voltammetric method, which uses a bismuth film-plated electrode surface and applies stripping voltammetry. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) represents a well-established analytical technique, while the applicability of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) in complicated sample matrices such as soil samples is currently unknown. This sample-handling challenge is investigated in the present study. The results show that the AAS and ASV methods were satisfactorily correlated and showed that the metal concentration in soils was lower than the limit values but with an increasing trend. Therefore, continuous monitoring of metal levels in the urban complex of a city is necessary and a matter of great importance. The limits of detection of cadmium (Cd) were lower when using the stripping voltammetry (SWASV) graphite furnace technique compared with those obtained with AAS when using the graphite furnace. However, when using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (flame-AAS), the measurements tended to overestimate the concentration of Cd compared with the values found using SWASV. This highlights the differences in sensitivity and accuracy between these analytical methods for detecting Cd. The SWASV method has the advantage of being cheaper and faster, enabling the simultaneous determination of heavy elements across the range of concentrations that these elements can occur in Mediterranean soils. Additionally, a dsDNA biosensor is suggested for the discrimination of Cu(I) along with Cu(II) based on the oxidation peak of guanine, and adenine residues can be applied in the redox speciation analysis of copper in soil, which represents an issue of great importance.

Abstract:A new solid-contact ion-selective electrode (ISE) sensitive to lead (II) ions, obtained by modifying a polymer membrane with a nanocomposite of carbon nanofibers and an ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, is presented. Electrodes with a different amount of nanocomposite in the membrane (0–9% w/w), in which a platinum wire or a glassy carbon electrode was used as an internal electrode, were tested. Potentiometric and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were carried out to determine the effect of the ion-sensitive membrane modification on the analytical and electrical parameters of the ion-selective electrode. It was found that the addition of the nanocomposite causes beneficial changes in the properties of the membrane, i.e., a decrease in resistance and an increase in capacitance and hydrophobicity. As a result, the electrodes with the modified membrane were characterized by a lower limit of detection, a wider measuring range and better selectivity compared to the unmodified electrode. Moreover, a significant improvement in the stability and reversibility of the electrode potential was observed, and additionally, they were resistant to changes in the redox potential of the sample. The best parameters were shown by the electrode obtained with the use of a platinum wire as the inner electrode with a membrane containing 6% of the nanocomposite. The electrode exhibited a Nernstian response to lead ions over a wide concentration range, 1.0 × 10−8–1.0 × 10−2 mol L−1, with a slope of 31.5 mV/decade and detection limit of 6.0 × 10−9 mol L−1. In addition, the proposed sensor showed very good long term stability and worked properly 4 months after its preparation without essential changes in the E0 or slope values. It was used to analyze a real sample and correct results of lead content determination were obtained.
