Abstract:A facile and convenient method has been developed to prepare N-doped TiO2 visible light nanocatalysts, which is performed by a solid-state calcination of one-dimensional titanate nanotubes with an inorganic ammonium salt (NH4Cl). The ion-exchange reaction between layered nanotubes and NH4Cl contributes to the phase transition to crystalline TiO2 combined with N doping. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy are carried out to study the phase evolution, compositions, and morphologies of obtained samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the N dopant in TiO2 is assigned to the interstitial NHx species. Both the phase transition and N doping are further confirmed by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. All N-doped TiO2 materials exhibit significantly higher visible light activities than that of the parent nanotubes for degrading rhodamine B. In addition, the N-doped TiO2 nanocatalyst holds a strong stability and durability for the removal of organic pollutions.
Surface roughening and top opening of single crystalline TiO2 nanowires for enhanced photocatalytic activity

Abstract:One dimensional (1D) single crystalline nanostructures facilitate electron transport and reduce the charge recombination; whilst nanotubular structure and a roughened surface provide more active sites as well as more opportunities for target molecules to reach the photocatalyst. As a result, TiO2 thin films with such a structural design can be anticipated to possess excellent photocatalytic activity. In this study, top opened nanowires with nanoprotrusions on the surface, which are hierarchical yet single crystalline as a whole, were synthesized by a simple acid treatment at 80°C for 36h of hydrothermally synthesized titanate nanowires, followed by a final calcination at 450°C for 1h. The hierarchical TiO2 films exhibited significantly enhanced efficiency when utilized to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B and phenol in water under UV light illumination.
Facile Synthesis of Ni-doped TiO2ultrathin Nanobelt Arrays with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Because of the high specific surface area and enhanced charge migration, TiO2 with unique belt-like nanostructures finds promising applications in various fields such as photocatalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells, gas sensors, and Li-ion batteries. In the current study, a solution combustion procedure was firstly adopted to prepare a black water-proof precursor. The black precursor interacted with H2O2 at ambient temperature, achieving a precursor solution that is capable of fabricating hydrogen titanate (H2Ti2O5·H2O) nanobelt arrays on metallic Ti substrates at 60 °C. Subsequent calcination in air at 400 °C achieved arrays of ultrathin anatase TiO2 nanobelts of ca. 2–4 nm in thickness. The addition of nickel nitrate in the combustion solution achieved the Ni-doping into the resultant TiO2 nanobelts, which did not alter the nanobelt structure but significantly reduced the band gap from 3.2 eV to 2.9 eV. When compared with the commonly alkali-hydrothermal synthesized anatase TiO2 nanobelts, the present ultrathin nanobelts exhibited much improved photocatalytic activity when utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water. The ultrathin nanobelt structure is believed to contribute to the high specific surface area, the much reduced charge migration path, and the enhanced charge transport along the longitudinal direction. The appropriate Ni-doping further enhanced the photocatalytic performance, because of the increased light harvesting efficiency and reduced charge recombination.
Activation of Carbon Cloth and Concurrent Precipitation of Titania Nanowires for Enhanced Adsorption and Photocatalysis Performance

Abstract:Vertically aligned TiO2 nanowires exhibit excellent photoactivity because of the high specific surface area and increased charge separation; yet the limited adsorption capacity towards target pollutants hinders the photo catalytic degradation of pollutants in water. We report herein a mild solution approach to precipitate anatase TiO2 nanowire arrays, with a tunable thickness of 1.5-4.5 mu m, on carbon cloth to achieve simultaneously high adsorption capacity and excellent photoactivity. When compared with TiO2 nanowire arrays precipitated on metallic Ti substrates, which possess a negligible adsorption capacity, TiO2 nanowires loaded on the activated carbon cloth substrates exhibit a higher efficiency towards photocatalytic degradations of both rhodamine B dye molecules and colorless sulfosalicylic acid in water under UV light illumination. The increasing film thickness is more effective to increase the photoactivity of TiO2 nanowires loaded on the activated carbon cloth than those on metallic Ti foil. The current investigation establishes the feasibility to greatly improve the photoactivity of one-dimensional nanostructured TiO2 arrays by using a highly adsorptive substrate.
Photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 nanorods, nanowires and nanoflowers filled with TiO 2 nanoparticles

Abstract:This study establishes the feasibility to enhance the photocatalytic activity of nanostructured TiO2 thin films through embedding the free spaces with sol-gel TiO2 nanoparticles. With the various additives in the aqueous H2O2 solutions, thin films of TiO2 nanorods, nanowires, and nanoflowers were precipitated on metallic Ti substrates via the Ti-H2O2 interactions at 80 °C for 72 h. About 3–7% anatase TiO2 nanoparticles were then embedded successfully among the free spaces of the nanostructures by immersing them into a titania sol followed by lifting up with an appropriate withdrawing speed. When utilized to assist degradations of phenol in water under UV light illumination, the photocatalytic activity for thin films of nanorods and nanowires after filling with sol-gel TiO2 nanoparticles is 76% and 136% higher than that of the pristine films, respectively. The films also exhibited high stability upon cycling tests, which could thus find potential applications in wastewater treatments.

Abstract:Natural porous mineral supported (TiO2/diatomite) photocatalyst was prepared via a modified sol–gel method using titanium (IV) butoxide (TBOT) and diatomite. The effect of TBOT dosage on adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B (RhB) solution was investigated. The morphology and elemental distribution were determined by scanning electron microscopy with attached energy-dispersive X-ray detector. The porous and crystalline structures were characterized using nitrogen adsorption–desorption and X-ray diffraction techniques, respectively. The prepared TiO2/diatomite hybrid catalyst has shown relatively even porous structure and dispersion of TiO2 over the surface. This suggests that the diatomite matrix prevented the agglomeration of TiO2 particles. Initially, the surface area and pore volume of the hybrid catalyst were increased by adding TBOT then decreased for dosages higher than 1.0ml. The crystalline size of TiO2 immobilized on diatomite matrix by sol–gel method was around 20nm. When the experiments were carried out in the absence of diatomite, this value was increased to 33.73nm. The use of diatomite also promoted an increase of the transformation temperature of the crystalline phase anatase to rutile for the TiO2. The as-prepared TiO2/diatomite composite exhibited high photocatalytic activity (96.0% for 0.5h UV-light irradiation) for the degradation of RhB from wastewater as a result of its unique porous structure and optimum TiO2 loading. In addition, it can be easily separated from suspension and possess a good durability. This hybrid material holds great promise in the engineering field for the environmental remediation.

Abstract:An efficient photocatalytic reactor to remove pollutants from either water or air relies on highly active photocatalytic thin films on appropriate substrates, which contribute to both light harvesting and pollutant molecules transfer. In this investigation, few-layer titanate nanobelts were deposited on metallic Ti mesh using hydrogen peroxide solution, which were then subjected to a subsequent hot water treatment to achieve crystallized titania nanorod arrays. The three-dimensional arrays of nanorods formed on Ti mesh (three layers overlapped) exhibited an exceptional high efficiency when utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water under UV light illumination, which is 25 times that of P25 film, and even 1.3 times that of P25 nanoparticles in a slurry system. For photodegradation of phenol in water, the three-layer Ti mesh also exhibited a reaction rate constant 6.9 times that of P25 film. The reduced band gap, abundant surface hydroxyl groups, and mixed phase effects arising from the low temperature approach contribute to the high photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Photocatalytic anatase TiO2 nanowire thin films have been prepared by in situ oxidation of Ti plate in a mixture solution of concentrated H(2)O(2) and NaOH, followed by proton exchange and calcination. The morphologies and properties of the titanate and titania films have been investigated by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and Raman spectrometry. The mechanism of formation of the porous microstructure has been discussed; it is the result of the balance between dissolution and precipitation. And sodium ions in the solution are needed to combine with titanate species for the nanowire formation. The anatase TiO2 nanowire thin films exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity and stability in phenol degradation. The combination effects of the porous morphology and nanowire characteristics are favorable for improved photocatalytic performance. This novel nanowire film is promising for practical aqueous purification.

Abstract:The efficiency of photocatalysis largely hinges on the design of the photocatalysts, which can be optimized for effective light absorption, improved charge separation and transport, and faster surface reactions. In this research, we developed a yolk-shell nanostructured photocatalyst featuring one-dimensional TiO2 nanorods (NRs) cores encapsulated within a porous silica shell. After photodepositing Pt nanoparticles (NPs) onto the TiO2NRs, the photocatalyst exhibited excellent performance. Under simulated sunlight, Pt2-TiO2-NRs@SiO2 achieved a photocatalytic efficiency of 55.47 mmol g-1h- 1 using methanol as the sacrificial agent and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 7.93 % at 350 nm, surpassing most previously reported TiO2-based catalysts. This superior activity is attributed to 1D NRs, along with the hollow structure that enhances light utilization through multiple scattering. The stability and high catalytic performance of these yolk-shell structures highlight the effectiveness of our design strategy in fabricating novel, highly active, and stable catalysts.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide is one of the best semiconductor photocatalysts available for photocatalysis. In this paper, titanium dioxide nanofiber membranes are prepared by post-anneal-assisted electrospinning process. The obtained membrane is composed of anatase titanium dioxide continuous and porous nanofibers with diameters ranging from 65 to 115 run. An optimized annealing scheme is determined. Photocatalytic measurements show that the photocatalytic efficiency of the anatase TiO2 nanofiber membrane is 72%, which is highly superior to that of the anatase TiO2 thin film (44%). It is believed that the large specific surface area intensively enhances the photocatalytic reactions and the good shape retention might be favorable for recuperability and practicality. Low-Temperature Growth of a Nitrogen-Doped Titania Nanoflower Film and Its Ability to Assist Photodegradation of Rhodamine B in Water

Abstract:Successful application of titania photocatalysts for air and water remediation demands highly active titania thin films fabricated through a simple reaction that is easily scaled-up. In this study, titania thin films with a dual structure, that is, flower-like rutile aggregates sitting on top of an anatase layer, were fabricated simply by oxidizing metallic Ti plates with hydrogen peroxide solution containing trace amounts of hexamethylenetetramine and concentrated nitric acid at 353 K for 72 h. Low-temperature growth of the top flower-like rutile, with constructing blocks of tiny rutile nanorods, occurred only after 60 h of reaction when the solution contained almost no hydrogen peroxide or Ti(IV) ions. Tiny rutile nanorods were supposed to form through a dissolution precipitation mechanism and then orient and attach to form single-crystal nanorods with larger sizes, which self-organize to develop the flower-like rutile aggregates. After a subsequent thermal treatment to further improve the crystallinity, the titania film was utilized to assist photodegradation of Rhodamine B in water under ultraviolet light irradiation. Significant increased photocatalytic activity of the titania nanoflower film was achieved after natural aging of the titania thin film for certain durations. The present film possessed enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with the titania nanorod film we previously reported and the commercial Degussa P-25 titania coating as well.
Construction of Ni-doped Belt-on-belt TiO2 Thin Film to Assist Photodegradation of Rhodamine B in Water

Abstract:Three-dimensional hierarchical nanostructures with carefully designed constructing units are promising for photocatalysts because of their improved light harvesting capability, enlarged specific surface area, increased active sites, and more rapid charge migration. In this paper, nanostructured thin films of belt-on-belt hierarchical TiO2 were fabricated on metallic Ti substrates for photocatalytic applications. Arrays of anatase TiO2 nanobelts on Ti substrates were firstly achieved by an alkali-hydrothermal approach. A wet-chemistry route based on solution combustion synthesis was then adopted to cover the nanobelt trunk with branches of ultra-thin hydrogen titanate nanobelts, which decomposed to anatase TiO2 upon a subsequent air calcination. When utilized to assist photodegradations of rhodamine B in water under the illumination of a Xe lamp, the hierarchical TiO2 exhibited averagely a 13% increase in the efficiency when compared with the pristine TiO2 nanobelts. The Ni-doping in the branches further improved the photocatalytic activity, which is 1.5 times that of the pristine TiO2 nanobelts. The present belt-on-belt hierarchical TiO2 thin films with carefully controlled compositions and nanostructures are thus of potential interest in photocatalysis.
Single-crystalline Rutile TiO2 Nanorod Array on Flexible Ti Substrates for Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Phenol in Water

Abstract:Single-crystalline nanorods are intrinsic highways for charge transfer and hence ideal nanofeatures for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) degradations of pollutants in wastewater. Photocatalytic thin films on flexible substrates avoid the nuisance catalysts-recovering procedure and also allow for the flexible design in photo catalytic apparatus. We therefore directly deposited single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays on flexible and conductive Ti substrates through a hydrothermal technique and optimized the synthetic parameters to achieve an extremely high PEC activity towards phenol removal in water under UV light illumination. In the presence of tetrabutyltitanate (TBT) and HCl reactants under a hydrothermal environment, a balance in the erosion of the Ti substrate and the precipitation of TiO2 nanorods is found to be the key to tune the nanofeatures of the TiO2 thin films and in turn the PEC efficiency. The decreasing TBT concentration achieved a more sparsely distributed nanorod array, which significantly contributes to the PEC activity; yet too little TBT resulted in total dissolution of Ti plates. The PEC activity increased with increasing hydrothermal duration because of more loaded TiO2. The maximum reaction rate constant is 2.74 h(-1), which is 39 times that of a commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticulate film. The photocurrent stabilized at 0.9 mA/cm(2) under the illumination of AM1.5G simulated solar light, suggesting a high separation efficiency of photogenerated holes and electrons along the single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays.
A H2O2 Oxidation Approach to Ti3C2/TiO2 for Efficient Photocatalytic Removal of Distinct Organic Pollutants in Water.

Abstract:To develop versatile photocatalysts for efficient degradation of distinct organic pollutants in water is a continuous pursuit in environment remediation. Herein, we directly oxidize Ti3C2 MXene with hydrogen peroxide to produce C-doped anatase TiO2 nanowires with aggregates maintaining a layered architecture of the MXene. The Ti3C2 MXene provides a titanium source for TiO2, a carbon source for in situ C-doping, and templates for nanowire aggregates. Under UV light illumination, the optimized Ti3C2/TiO2 exhibits a reaction rate constant 1.5 times that of the benchmark P25 TiO2 nanoparticles, toward photocatalytic degradations of trace phenol in water. The mechanism study suggests that photogenerated holes play key roles on the phenol degradation, either directly oxidizing phenol molecules or in an indirect way through oxidizing first the surface hydroxyl groups. The unreacted Ti3C2 MXene, although with trace amounts, is supposed to facilitate electron transfer, which inhibits charge recombination. The unique nanostructure of layered aggregates of nanowires, abundant surface oxygen vacancies arising from the carbon doping, and probably the Ti3C2/TiO2 heterojunction guarantee the high photocatalytic efficiency toward removals of organic pollutants in water. The photocatalyst also exhibits an activity superior to, or at least comparable to, the benchmark P25 TiO2 toward photodegradations for typical persistent organic pollutants of phenol, dye molecule of rhodamine B, antibiotic of tetracycline, pharmaceutical wastewater of ofloxacin, and pesticide of N,N-dimethylformamide, when evaluated in total organic carbon removal.
Fabrication of ZSM-5 Zeolite Supported TiO2-NiO Heterojunction Photocatalyst and Research on Its Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Photocatalytic ability and adsorbability are both critical factors for photocatalysts, the two factors may influence photocatalytic performance in practical application. Herein, ZSM-5 zeolite was used as carrier to support TiO2-NiO (p-n) heterojunction to prepare the TiO2-NiO/ZSM-5 photocatalyst. In this compound, TiO2-NiO heterojunction with a special inner electric field can efficiently retard the recombination rate of electrons and holes, ZSM-5 zeolite with a large specific surface area can greatly improve adsorbability. The results indicated that TiO2-NiO/ZSM-5 indeed improved the photocatalytic performance and the degradation rate of Rhodamine B (Rh-B) can reach 94.5% under ultraviolet light after 90 min. After five cycles, the degradation rate of Rh-B still reaches 85%, indicating it has excellent stability. Furthermore, the trapping experiment and DMPO spin-trapping experiment revealed that center dot O-2(-) is the chief active substance in the degradation of Rh-B. Consequently, this study provides a novel approach to developing a potential photocatalyst to treat water pollution.

Abstract:Novel carbon doped TiO2 nanotubes, nanowires and nanorods were fabricated by utilizing the nanoconfinement of hollow titanate nanotubes (TNTs). The fabrication process included adsorption of ethanol molecules in the inner space of TNTs and thermal treatment of the complex in inert N-2 atmosphere. The structural morphology of carbon doped TiO2 nanostructures can be tuned using the calcination temperature. X-ray diffraction, Raman and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller studies proved that the doped carbon promoted the crystallization and phase transition by acting as nucleation seeds. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that O-Ti-C and Ti-O-C bonds were formed in the nanostructures. Additional electronic states from the XPS valence band due to carbon doping were observed. This evidence indicated the electronic origin of the band gap narrowing and visible light absorption. The differences in chemical and electronic states between the surface and bulk of as-prepared samples confirmed that carbon was doped into the lattice of TiO2 nanostructure through an inner doping process. The as-prepared catalysts exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of toluene in gas phase under both visible and simulated solar light irradiation compared with that of commercial Degussa P25. This novel fabrication approach can valuably contribute to designing nanostructured photocatalytic materials and modifying various nanotube materials.
Fabrication and Photocatalysis of TiO2 Flower-like Nanostructures

Abstract:TiO2 nanostructures were fabricated by a reaction of Ti foils in H2O2 solution at mild temperature. Porous TiO2 nanostructures, well-adhered to Ti foil surfaces, were formed at 80C in 10 min, and then flower- like and rod nanostructures formed in succession after a longer reaction time. Samples prepared at 80C for 4 h are amorphous, and anatase-dominated crystal phase emerged in the sample prepared for as long as 10 h. Almost pure anatase phase were obtained in TiO2 nanostructures by annealing the samples at a temperature of 300C. Photocatalysis of the TiO2 nanostructures was characterized by the degradation of RhB dye molecules in an aqueous solution exposed to ultraviolet light. Results show a 7 cm2 annealed TiO2 flower-like nanostructure having the degradation rate of RhB as fast as 29.8 times that of the dye solution exposed to ultraviolet light alone.
Fabrication of TiO2/Fe2O3/g-C3N4 ternary photocatalyst via a low-temperature calcination and solvothermal route and its visible light assisted photocatalytic properties

The subsequent Fe2O3/g-C3N4 and TiO2/Fe2O3/g-C3N4 were investigated in terms of structure, morphology, optical properties, and surface chemical composition analysis via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV–visible spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The crystalline nature of the samples was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and HRTEM. Under visible light, the photocatalytic capabilities of as-fabricated TiO2/Fe2O3/g-C3N4 were examined by degrading Rhodamine B (RhB), and an enhancement in photocatalytic efficacy was found. TiO2 works as a primary photosensitizer, providing extra photoinduced electrons, while Fe2O3 acts as a “bridge” for electron transport from the TiO2 moiety to the g-C3N4 thereby establishing an indirect charge transport pathway based on the Z-scheme. Radical scavenging tests were conducted to further explore the cause of increased activity and degradation mechanisms. The proposed technique might be a viable option for the removal of rhodamine b compounds and remedying freshwater reservoirs.

Abstract:CuO-loaded TiO2 nanomaterials have applications in pollutant degradation via photocatalysis. However, the existing methods of fabricating these nanomaterials involve liquid-phase processes, which require several steps and typically generate liquid waste. In this study, TiO2 and TiO2–CuO nanoparticulate thin films were successfully fabricated through a one-step gas-phase approach involving a combination of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition. The resulting films consisted of small, spherical TiO2 nanoparticles with observable CuO on the TiO2 surface. Upon annealing in air, the TiO2 nanoparticles were crystallized, and CuO was completely oxidized. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2–CuO/H2O2, when introduced into the rhodamine 6G degradation system, was substantially enhanced under both ultraviolet and visible light irradiation. Moreover, this study highlights the influence of pH on the photocatalytic activity; TiO2–CuO/H2O2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity at pH 13, with a reaction rate constant of 0.99 h−1 cm−2 after 180 min of visible light irradiation. These findings could facilitate the development of nanoparticulate thin films for enhanced pollutant degradation in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this work, TiO 2 nanoparticles with MWCNT composite have been prepared via an in-situ method. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV-DRS, SEM, and mapping analysis. The optimized TiO 2 -MWCNT composite shows better photocatalytic rhodamine B dye degradation under UV–Visible Light. This higher photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 -MWCNT composite is due to reduce the band gap and also MWCNT acts as an electron relay system to enhance the charge separation and reduce the recombination of electron and hole pairs. This result was further confirmed through photocurrent and impedance spectroscopy . In addition, the effect of some common inorganic anions was investigated and discussed. The degradation mechanism was investigated via radical scavengers' test and discussed. We Hope, this work can provide new ideas for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and beyond.
