Abstract:Abstract Novel advances in the field of brain imaging have enabled the unprecedented clinical application of various imaging modalities to facilitate disease diagnosis and treatment. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a functional imaging technique that measures the transfer impedances between electrodes on the body surface to estimate the spatial distribution of electrical properties of tissues. EIT offers many advantages over other neuroimaging technologies, which has led to its potential clinical use. This qualitative review provides an overview of the basic principles, algorithms, and system composition of EIT. Recent advances in the field of EIT are discussed in the context of epilepsy, stroke, brain injuries and edema, and other brain diseases. Further, we summarize factors limiting the development of brain EIT and highlight prospects for the field. In epilepsy imaging, there have been advances in EIT imaging depth, from cortical to subcortical regions. In stroke research, a bedside EIT stroke monitoring system has been developed for clinical practice, and data support the role of EIT in multi-modal imaging for diagnosing stroke. Additionally, EIT has been applied to monitor the changes in brain water content associated with cerebral edema, enabling the early identification of brain edema and the evaluation of mannitol dehydration. However, anatomically realistic geometry, inhomogeneity, cranium completeness, anisotropy and skull type, etc., must be considered to improve the accuracy of EIT modeling. Thus, the further establishment of EIT as a mature and routine diagnostic technique will necessitate the accumulation of more supporting evidence.

Abstract:Multi-frequency electrical impedance tomography (MFEIT) reconstructs the image of conductivity inside the human body based on the dependence of tissue conductivity on frequency. As there exist differences in the conductivity over frequency between blood, ischemic cortical tissue and normal cortical tissue, MFEIT has potential application in the detection of acute stroke. However, because the conductivity distribution of the human head is highly inhomogeneous and the conductivities of normal head tissue and stroke lesion tissue both change with frequency, the anomaly and normal head tissues are often mixed together in the reconstructed image, which makes it difficult to discern the anomaly. Here we present a spectral decomposition frequency-difference (SD-FD) imaging algorithm in an attempt to address this issue: firstly, we reconstruct so-called EIT spectral images according to the conductivity spectra of tissues; secondly, we obtain the EIT image of the anomaly from the spectral images by using independent component analysis. The results show that the proposed algorithm is capable of detecting the anomaly in a numerical head phantom, as well as in a realistic human head tank with frequency-dependent and heterogeneous conductivities distribution. The proposed SD-FD algorithm may support MFEIT use for human stroke imaging in the future.

Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive, radiation-free medical imaging technique invented more than 20 years ago. In 1984, the first EIT tomogram (a cross-sectional image of the human forearm) was generated [1]. Merely one year later, in 1985, the first EIT scan of the human chest, clearly showing both lungs, followed [2]. In the following two decades, there was immense development of this method. About twenty research groups, most of them located in Europe, significantly improved EIT hardware and software, identified the major fields of possible future application, and conducted multiple methodological validation studies, as well as experimental animal and clinical studies. Since the early days, the use of EIT in pulmonary applications has been defined as one of the most promising techniques although other applications (e.g., detection or monitoring of breast cancer, pharyngeal and gastric motility, cortical brain activity, pulmonary and peripheral blood perfusion, cardiac performance, urinary bladder emptying, uterus activity) have also been considered [2]–[4].

Abstract:Objective: The strengths of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) are its capability of imaging the internal body by using a noninvasive, radiation safe technique, and the absence of known hazards. In this paper we introduce a novel idea of using EIT in microelectrodes during Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery in order to obtain an image of the electrical conductivities of the brain tissues surrounding the microelectrodes. DBS is a surgical treatment involving the implantation of a medical probe inside the brain. For such application, the EIT reconstruction method has to offer both high quality and robustness against noise. Methods: A post-processing method for open-domain EIT is introduced in this paper, which combines linear and nonlinear methods in order to use the advantages of both with limited drawbacks. The reconstruction method is a two-steps method, the first solves the inverse problem with a linear algorithm and the second brings the nonlinear aspects back into the image. Results: The proposed method is tested on both simulation and phantom data, and compared to three widely used method for EIT imaging. Resulting images and errors gives a strong advantage to the proposed solution. Conclusion: High quality reconstruction from phantom data validates the efficiency of the novel reconstruction method. Significance: This feasibility study presents an efficient method for open domain EIT and opens the way to clinical trials.

Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is considered as a potential candidate for brain stroke imaging due to its compactness and potential use in bedside and emergency settings. The electrode-skin contact impedance and low conductivity of skull pose some practical challenges to the EIT head imaging. This paper studies the application of capacitively coupled electrical impedance tomography (CCEIT) in brain imaging for the first time. CCEIT is a new contactless EIT technique which uses voltage excitation without direct contact with the skin, as oppose to directly injecting the current to the skin in EIT. Because the safety issue of a new technique should be strictly treated, simulation work based on a simplified head model was carried out to investigate the safety aspects of CCEIT. By comparing with the standard EIT excited by a typical safe current level used in brain imaging, the safe excitation reference of CCEIT is obtained. This is done by comparing the maximum level of internal electrical field (internal current density) of EIT and that of CCEIT. Simulation results provide useful knowledge of excitation signal level of CCEIT and also show a critical comparison with traditional EIT. Practical experiments were carried out with a 12-electrode CCEIT phantom, saline, and carrot samples. Experimental results show the feasibility and potential of CCEIT for stroke imaging. In this paper, the anomaly diameter resolution is 10 mm (1/18 of the phantom diameter), which indicates that small-volume stroke could be detected. This is achieved by a low excitation voltage of 1 V, showing the possibility of even better performance when higher but yet safe level of excitation voltages is used.

Abstract:Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a tomographic imaging method which solves an ill posed inverse problem using the boundary voltage-current data collected from the surface of the object under test. Though the spatial resolution is comparatively low compared to conventional tomographic imaging modalities, due to several advantages EIT has been studied for a number of applications such as medical imaging, material engineering, civil engineering, biotechnology, chemical engineering, MEMS and other fields of engineering and applied sciences. In this paper, the applications of EIT have been reviewed and presented as a short summary. The working principal, instrumentation and advantages are briefly discussed followed by a detail discussion on the applications of EIT technology in different areas of engineering, technology and applied sciences.

Abstract:Lung perfusion monitoring can provide accurate information on changes in pulmonary blood flow in critically ill patients, and thus help guide clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, due to inconveniences such as patient transport, conventional imaging techniques are unable to meet the demand for real-time monitoring of lung perfusion, more convenient and reliable real-time functional imaging techniques should be developed to optimise cardiopulmonary management in critically ill patients. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive, radiation-free, bedside functional imaging technique that can be used to assess lung perfusion in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary embolisms and other conditions, thereby assisting with the diagnosis of disease, the adjustment of treatment protocols, and the assessment of treatment outcomes. In this review, we focused on advances in EIT for lung perfusion monitoring in critically ill patients.

Abstract:Abstract Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a low-cost noninvasive imaging method. The main purpose of this paper is to highlight the main aspects of the EIT method and to review the recent advances and developments. The advances in instrumentation and in the different image reconstruction methods and systems are demonstrated in this review. The main applications of the EIT are presented and a special attention made to the papers published during the last years (from 2015 until 2020). The advantages and limitations of EIT are also presented. In conclusion, EIT is a promising imaging approach with a strong potential that has a large margin of progression before reaching the maturity phase.

Abstract:Abstract Objective . Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an imaging technique that produces tomographic images of internal impedance changes within an object using surface electrodes. It can be used to image the slow increase in cerebral tissue impedance that occurs over seconds during epileptic seizures, which is attributed to cell swelling due to disturbances in ion homeostasis following hypersynchronous neuronal firing and its associated metabolic demands. In this study, we characterised and imaged this slow impedance response during neocortical and hippocampal epileptiform events in the rat brain and evaluated its relationship to the underlying neural activity. Approach. Neocortical or hippocampal seizures, comprising repeatable series of high-amplitude ictal spikes, were induced by electrically stimulating the sensorimotor cortex or perforant path of rats anaesthetised with fentanyl-isoflurane. Transfer impedances were measured during ≥30 consecutive seizures, by applying a sinusoidal current through independent electrode pairs on an epicortical array, and combined to generate an EIT image of slow activity. Main results. The slow impedance responses were consistently time-matched to the end of seizures and EIT images of this activity were reconstructed reproducibly in all animals ( p < 0.03125, N = 5). These displayed foci of activity that were spatially confined to the facial somatosensory cortex and dentate gyrus for neocortical and hippocampal seizures, respectively, and encompassed a larger volume as the seizure progressed. Centre-of-mass analysis of reconstructions revealed that this activity corresponded to the true location of the epileptogenic zone, as determined by EEG recordings and fast neural EIT measurements which were obtained simultaneously. Significance. These findings suggest that the slow impedance response presents a reliable marker of hypersynchronous neuronal activity during epileptic seizures and can thus be utilised for investigating the mechanisms of epileptogenesis in vivo and for aiding localisation of the epileptogenic zone during presurgical evaluation of patients with refractory epilepsies.

Abstract:Recently, the image reconstruction study on EIT plays a vital role in the medical application field for validation and calibration purpose. This research article analyzes the different types of reconstruction algorithms of EIT in medical imaging applications. Besides, it reviews many methods involved in constructing the electrical impedance tomography. The spatial distribution and resolution with different sensitivity has been discussed here. The electrode arrangement of various methods involved in the EIT system is discussed here. This research article comprises of adjacent drive method, cross method, and alternative opposite current direction method based on the voltage driven pattern. The assessment process of biomedical EIT has been discussed and investigated through the impedance imaging of the existent substances. The locality of the electrodes can be calculated and fixed for appropriate methods. More specifically, this research article discusses about the EIT image reconstruction methods and the significance of the alternative opposite current direction approach in the biomedical system. The change in conductivity test is further investigated based on the injection of current flow in the system. It has been established by the use of Electrical Impedance Tomography and Diffuse Optical Tomography Reconstruction Software (EDITORS) software, which is open-source software.
Characterization of Electrical Impedance Tomography System

Abstract:Electrical Impedance Tomography can be cost-effective, portable, non-invasive imaging technique. It has preclinical and a few of them already proven industrial applications. This technique can only recover images of low spatial and contrast resolution, partially due to existing physical models. The capability of discriminating between Impedance profiles in recovery is around 73 percentage. However, similar to other modalities, EITs performance depends on the hardware and recovery algorithm design and operating parameters. This work presents an empirically obtained mutual relation between the hardware design related six independent variables, namely (a) molarity of the coupling media, (b) scanning duration, (c) Size of the object, and (d) parameters defining the size of the scanning assembly (No of electrodes, area of the vessel, and percentage periphery covered by the electrodes), affecting its performance. The expression predicts that the error can be kept under a 10 percentage value in a worst-case scenario if these six parameters are kept under a given range. The root mean square error between the experiment values and predicted values from the presented equation is 1.4053. It is shown that time significantly affects the recovery process compared to other optimizing parameters. It is also shown that the accepted molarity value for the presented system is 2M.

Abstract:Abstract Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an emerging non-invasive medical imaging modality. It is based on feeding electrical currents into the patient, measuring the resulting voltages at the skin, and recovering the internal conductivity distribution. The mathematical task of EIT image reconstruction is a nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem. Therefore any EIT image reconstruction method needs to be regularized, typically resulting in blurred images. One promising application is stroke-EIT, or classification of stroke into either ischemic or hemorrhagic. Ischemic stroke involves a blood clot, preventing blood flow to a part of the brain causing a low-conductivity region. Hemorrhagic stroke means bleeding in the brain causing a high-conductivity region. In both cases the symptoms are identical, so a cost-effective and portable classification device is needed. Typical EIT images are not optimal for stroke-EIT because of blurriness. This paper explores the possibilities of machine learning in improving the classification results. Two paradigms are compared: (a) learning from the EIT data, that is Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps and (b) extracting robust features from data and learning from them. The features of choice are virtual hybrid edge detection (VHED) functions (Greenleaf et al 2018 Anal. PDE 11 ) that have a geometric interpretation and whose computation from EIT data does not involve calculating a full image of the conductivity. We report the measures of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the networks trained with EIT data and VHED functions separately. Computational evidence based on simulated noisy EIT data suggests that the regularized grey-box paradigm (b) leads to significantly better classification results than the black-box paradigm (a).

Abstract:Bio-impedance-based imaging technique stands at the intersection of medical/industrial imaging techniques and is also known as electrical impedance tomography (EIT), imparting a non-invasive, value-powerful approach for imaging biological tissues and procedures. We begin by elucidating the essential standards underlying EIT, focusing on the size of impedance variations inside an object (plastic pipe) to reconstruct its inner conductivity distribution. Subsequently, we delve into the numerous programs of EIT across numerous fields and discuss recent experimental strategies and advancements aimed at mitigating these boundaries, such as novel electrode configurations, advanced reconstruction algorithms, and incorporation of complementary imaging modalities. Finally, we underscore the importance of experimental research in advancing the capabilities and packages of EIT as a valuable device in industrial monitoring, specifically in bedside tracking, process pipelines, tank monitoring and also used for other medical or industrial detection, even as additionally exploring its rising roles in commercial and environmental applications.

A Post-Processing Tool and Feasibility Study for Three-Dimensional Imaging with Electrical Impedance Tomography During Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery

Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a promising technique for biomedical imaging. The strength of EIT is its ability to reconstruct images of the body's internal structures through radiation-safe techniques. EIT is regarded as safe for patients' health, and it is currently being actively researched. This paper investigates the application of EIT during deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery as a means to identify targets during operations. DBS involves a surgical procedure in which a lead or electrode array is implanted in a specific target area in the brain. Electrical stimulations are then used to modulate neural circuits within the target area to reduce disabling neurological symptoms. The main difficulty in performing DBS surgery is to accurately position the lead in the target area before commencing the treatment. Brain tissue shifts during DBS surgery can be as large as the target size when compared with the pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) images. To address this problem, a solution based on open-domain EIT to reconstruct images surrounding the probe during DBS surgery is proposed. Data acquisition and image reconstruction were performed, and artificial intelligence was applied to enhance the resulting images. The results showed that the proposed method is rapid, produces valuable high-quality images, and constitutes a first step towards in-vivo study.

Abstract:Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been used by researchers across several areas because of its low-cost and no-radiation properties. Researchers use complex conductivity in bioimpedance experiments to evaluate changes in various indicators within the image target. The diverse volumes and edges of biological tissues and the large impedance range impose dedicated demands on hardware design. The EIT hardware with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), fast scanning and suitable for the impedance range of the image target is a fundamental foundation that EIT research needs to be equipped with. Understanding the characteristics of this technique and state-of-the-art design will accelerate the development of the robust system and provide a guidance for the superior performance of next-generation EIT. This review explores the hardware strategies for EIT proposed in the literature.
Electrical Impedance Tomography: A Fair Comparative Study on Deep Learning and Analytic-based Approaches

Abstract:Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a powerful imaging technique with diverse applications, e.g., medical diagnosis, industrial monitoring, and environmental studies. The EIT inverse problem is about inferring the internal conductivity distribution of an object from measurements taken on its boundary. It is severely ill-posed, necessitating advanced computational methods for accurate image reconstructions. Recent years have witnessed significant progress, driven by innovations in analytic-based approaches and deep learning. This review explores techniques for solving the EIT inverse problem, focusing on the interplay between contemporary deep learning-based strategies and classical analytic-based methods. Four state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms are rigorously examined, harnessing the representational capabilities of deep neural networks to reconstruct intricate conductivity distributions. In parallel, two analytic-based methods, rooted in mathematical formulations and regularisation techniques, are dissected for their strengths and limitations. These methodologies are evaluated through various numerical experiments, encompassing diverse scenarios that reflect real-world complexities. A suite of performance metrics is employed to assess the efficacy of these methods. These metrics collectively provide a nuanced understanding of the methods' ability to capture essential features and delineate complex conductivity patterns. One novel feature of the study is the incorporation of variable conductivity scenarios, introducing a level of heterogeneity that mimics textured inclusions. This departure from uniform conductivity assumptions mimics realistic scenarios where tissues or materials exhibit spatially varying electrical properties. Exploring how each method responds to such variable conductivity scenarios opens avenues for understanding their robustness and adaptability.

Abstract:Tissue electroporation is a medical technique in which electrical pulses of microsecond to millisecond length are applied to a tissue in order to permeabilize the membrane of targeted cells, either temporarily or permanently, for the purpose of drug delivery and gene therapy or tissue ablation, respectively. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been suggested as an effective means of imaging the treated area and thereby providing control of electroporation. In this simulation based study we introduce methods for optimizing the use of EIT under the special conditions of electroporation. First, we address the issue of the rapid changes in tissue conductivity, during and after the application of pulses. We propose a solution through a method of simultaneously collecting data from all the electrodes, essentially capturing the state of the tissue at a single instant. This method, which employs several distinct frequencies, one for each electrode, allows a speedy and continuous collection of data, a vital part of real-time electroporation monitoring. The second issue is taking advantage of the presence of electroporation electrodes for the EIT process. We show how the electroporation electrodes that are normally found inside the tissue may help improve the reconstruction compared to data collected only from the body's boundary. This mathematical study employs recently collected in vivo data of rat liver electroporation to obtain a model which represents, as closely as possible, the reality of electroporation procedures.

Abstract:This study presents a computed tomography (CT) image-guided electrical impedance tomography (EIT) method for medical imaging. CT is a robust imaging modality for accurately reconstructing the density structure of the region being scanned. EIT can detect electrical impedance abnormalities to which CT scans may be insensitive, but the poor spatial resolution of EIT is a major concern for medical applications. A cross-gradient method has been introduced for oil and gas exploration to jointly invert multiple geophysical datasets associated with different medium properties in the same geological structure. In this study, we develop a CT image-guided EIT (CEIT) based on the cross-gradient method. We assume that both CT scanning and EIT imaging are conducted for the same medical target. A CT scan is first acquired to help solve the subsequent EIT imaging problem. During EIT imaging, we apply cross gradients between the CT image and the electrical conductivity distribution to iteratively constrain the conductivity inversion. The cross-gradient based method allows the mutual structures of different physical models to be referenced without directly affecting the polarity and amplitude of each model during the inversion. We apply the CEIT method to both numerical simulations and phantom experiments. The effectiveness of CEIT is demonstrated in comparison with conventional EIT. The comparison shows that the CEIT method can significantly improve the quality of conductivity images.
Modeling electrical impedance in brain tissue with diffusion tensor imaging for functional neurosurgery applications

Abstract:Objective. Decades ago, neurosurgeons used electrical impedance measurements in the brain for coarse intraoperative tissue differentiation. Over time, these techniques were largely replaced by more refined imaging and electrophysiological localization. Today, advanced methods of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and finite element method (FEM) modeling may permit non-invasive, high-resolution intracerebral impedance prediction. However, expectations for tissue-impedance relationships and experimentally verified parameters for impedance modeling in human brains are lacking. This study seeks to address this need. Approach. We used FEM to simulate high-resolution single- and dual-electrode impedance measurements along linear electrode trajectories through (1) canonical gray and white matter tissue models, and (2) selected anatomic structures within whole-brain patient DTI-based models. We then compared intraoperative impedance measurements taken at known locations along deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgical trajectories with model predictions to evaluate model accuracy and refine model parameters. Main results. In DTI-FEM models, single- and dual-electrode configurations performed similarly. While only dual-electrode configurations were sensitive to white matter fiber orientation, other influences on impedance, such as white matter density, enabled single-electrode impedance measurements to display significant spatial variation even within purely white matter structures. We compared 308 intraoperative single-electrode impedance measurements in five DBS patients to DTI-FEM predictions at one-to-one corresponding locations. After calibration of model coefficients to these data, predicted impedances reliably estimated intraoperative measurements in all patients (R=0.784±0.116, n=5). Through this study, we derived an updated value for the slope coefficient of the DTI conductance model published by Tuch et al., k=0.0649 S·s/mm 3 (original k=0.844), for use specifically in humans at physiological frequencies. Significance. This is the first study to compare impedance estimates from imaging-based models of human brain tissue to experimental measurements at the same locations in vivo. Accurate, non-invasive, imaging-based impedance prediction has numerous applications in functional neurosurgery, including tissue mapping, intraoperative electrode localization, and DBS.
