Abstract:A design of compact dual band 8-element MIMO antenna using folded monopole structures is proposed. The MIMO antenna consists of 8 folded monopole antenna elements, each two of them are symmetrically placed on the orthogonal frame corners of the substrate, and closely located to each other with no clearance on the ground. The folded monopole arms are used as radiation elements to resonate at two different bands of 3.4-3.6 GHz and 4.55-4.75 GHz. Each closely placed two antenna elements are connected by a 3 mm short neutral line which can be used to reduce the mutual coupling at both bands. By optimizing the antenna structure and neutral line, dual band decoupling can be achieved. The isolation and efficiency of the MIMO antenna is improved and the calculated ergodic channel capacities with a 20 dB SNR at both bands reach to 41.2 bps/Hz and 40.3 bps/Hz, respectively, very close to the ideal case of 8×8 MIMO system.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel design method for a tri‐band multiple in multiple out (MIMO) antenna. The antenna consists of four sets of identical antenna pairs arranged on the two side frames. Three resonant modes can be obtained using a microstrip coupling feed structure by employing different branches in antenna unit design. The working frequencies of the modes can be adjusted independently. Moreover, in each pair of antennas, two antenna units were closely arranged and a decoupling grounding branch was employed between the adjacent antennas to ensure good isolation. The tri‐band eight‐element MIMO antenna operates at 3.5, 4.9, and 5.6 GHz and the isolations were better than 14 dB. The proposed antenna had a low profile of 0.06λ 0 and good isolation so it has potential applications in 5G mobile terminals.

Abstract:In this letter, a multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with ultra-wideband performance for 5G smartphones is investigated. Firstly, a compact antenna-element with a size of 8×7mm2 is proposed. The antenna-element is designed as a shorted rectangular patch with a reclined-F slot etched on it. The antenna-element operates with a wide bandwidth of 88% which is contributed by the multiple-mode resonance and L-shaped coupling excitation. Then, eight identical antenna-elements are arranged on the bezels to constitute an 8×8 MIMO antenna. At last, to demonstrate our design mechanism, a prototype of the proposed MIMO antenna is fabricated and measured, achieving a good agreement between the measurement and simulation. The proposed MIMO antenna covers the entire 5G NR bands and part of the LTE bands with decent in-band isolations higher than 10 dB and total efficiencies varied from 40% to 75%.

Abstract:A wideband low-profile eight-element microstrip multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for fifth-generation (5G) mobile phones is proposed. The antenna is designed to be integrated on the back-cover of a mobile phone without occupying its inner space or ground clearance. The elements of the MIMO antenna can simultaneously excite the TM 01 , TM 10 , TM 02 , and TM 11 modes, and their broad operating bands come from combining the four modes together. The proposed MIMO antenna which is a simple single-layer plane structure with a thickness of only 0.787 mm is fabricated and tested. The experimental results show that the −6 dB impedance operating band of the MIMO antenna is 4.4–5.04 GHz which can cover the 5G N79 band of 4.4–5 GHz. It achieves a broad relative bandwidth of 13.6% with a low profile of $0.01~\lambda _{0}$ , where $\lambda _{0}$ is the free-space wavelength of the center frequency. It has an efficiency of higher than 42%, the mutual coupling of lower than −18 dB, the envelope correlation coefficients (ECCs) of lower than 0.24, and the ratios of mean effective gains (MEGs) of lower than 1.96 dB in the operating band.
Eight‐element self‐decoupled MIMO antenna design for 5G smartphones

Abstract:A self‐decoupled antenna element working at half‐ wavelength mode is proposed and implied into an eight‐element multiple‐input‐multiple‐output (MIMO) antenna array for the fifth‐generation (5G) smartphones applications. Particularly, self‐ decoupled is conveyed by the feature of balanced antenna, which is composed of an open slot (0.197 λ0 × 0.035 λ0 at 3.5 GHz) excited by a two‐arm feedline located on the horizontal ground board and a half‐wavelength dipole‐type mode is formed. A week ground current effect and high‐isolation level are achieved with no additional decoupling stub. Besides, the location of the element is thoroughly considered to achieve a desirable decoupling effect. In the desired 3.5 GHz band (3.4‐3.6 GHz), isolation of more than 18.5 dB and total efficiency of more than 65% are obtained. The proposed MIMO antenna was simulated and fabricated. The corresponding performances were claimed by simulated results and measured ones, a good uniformity between the two was obtained.

Abstract:A dual-polarization microstrip multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for 5G mobile phone applications is proposed in this communication. Eight differentially fed microstrip antenna elements are arranged on the back cover of a mobile phone. Four shorted radiation patches constitute the radiator of an antenna pair, and four antenna pairs form an eight-element MIMO antenna. The antenna element can excite two modes by utilizing the interaction of the two elements of one antenna pair and has a wide operating band. A prototype of the MIMO antenna is fabricated, and eight power dividers are applied to provide the differential feeding. The measured −6 dB impedance operating band is 4.37–5.5 GHz and can cover the N79 band (4.4–5 GHz) for 5G. The measured efficiencies of the antenna elements with a low profile of 1.2 mm are 40%–50% in the N79 band though the substrate has a high loss tangent of 0.02. The measured results show that the MIMO antenna has low mutual couplings of lower than −22 dB, low envelope correlation coefficients (ECCs) of lower than 0.068, and the ratios of mean effective gains (MEGs) of lower than 2.28 dB. Some issues in practical applications are discussed. The proposed antenna provides a promising solution to design a compact and pony-size MIMO antenna without occupying the inner space or ground clearance of a mobile phone.

Abstract:In this article, a wideband and highly-integrated quad-element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is proposed for the first time, to adapt to the size-limited environment in fifth-generation (5G) smartphones. First, the wideband decoupling between two extremely closely-spaced open-slot antennas with face-to-face and back-to-back configurations are investigated. Then, based on the complementary antenna pairs, wideband integrated quad-element MIMO antennas are implemented by the ingenious combination of these antenna pairs. For validation, an 8 ×8 MIMO system, constituted by two sets of integrated quad-antenna configurations, is simulated, fabricated, and measured. Both the simulated and measured results show that the 8×8 MIMO system can provide isolation of better than 10 dB between any two ports and a total antenna efficiency of 52.8%-70.8%/40.5%-75.0% across 3.3-5.0 GHz. Compared with the existing integrated quad-antenna design schemes, the proposed solution can expand the bandwidth from less than 200 to 1700 MHz, covering the entire 5G N77, N78, and N79 bands. In addition to the integrated quad-antenna design, further extension to integrated multiantenna configurations is also discussed by the flexible combination of complementary antenna pairs, which paves the way for future higher-order MIMO system in smartphones.

Abstract:This communication proposes a wideband and low-profile microstrip antenna for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) applications. By loading two sets of shorting vias and cutting two symmetrical slots on a rectangular patch, triple modes, including the monopole mode, the TM10, and TM01 modes, are excited simultaneously to achieve the wideband radiation in a relatively low profile. Four elements of the proposed antenna are placed in a sequentially rotated configuration for mobile MIMO applications with a small volume of $59.2\times 59.2\times2.5$ mm3 ( $0.82\,\,\lambda _{0} \times 0.82\,\,\lambda _{0} \times 0.034\,\,\lambda _{0}$ , where $\lambda _{0}$ is the free-space wavelength at the center frequency). A cross-line fence is placed in the center to improve the isolation between adjacent elements. A prototype of the proposed MIMO antenna is fabricated and tested, with the measured −6-dB impedance bandwidth of 3.3–5.0 GHz, covering the N77/N78/N79 bands of fifth-generation (5G) requirements. The proposed four-elements MIMO antenna has the advantages of low profile, compact size, and wide bandwidth, providing a feasible solution of 5G mobile MIMO antennas on the back cover of the device.

Abstract:A novel miniaturized wideband dual-polarized antenna, based on cross magnetic dipoles and a backed cavity, is proposed in this letter for multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) applications. The dipoles with exponential curvature edges deliver inherent wideband character to the radiator. Four parasitic resonators are introduced to miniaturize the top radiator's conducting area and lower the Q-factor of the whole structure, enhancing the antenna's impedance matching. Different from conventional direct-fed cross-dipole antennas, a wideband hybrid ring coupler is applied to excite the two dipoles simultaneously in-phase/out-of-phase to generate the ±45° polarization. The dimension of the proposed antenna is 42.5 mm × 42.5 mm × 18 mm, which is only 0.48λ L × 0.48λ L × 0.2λ L at the frequency of 3.4 GHz. The corresponding MIMO array is studied, showing a low mutual coupling and envelope correlation coefficient level across the band, and an outperforming front-back-ratio performance. The antenna is prototyped and measured. The measurement results agree with those of the simulations well .

Abstract:This paper presents the design and analysis of a compact eight-port multiband multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for 5G smartphones. The proposed antenna structure is designed using meandering elements, as radiator, on the FR4 substrate of 150 × 80 × 0.8 mm with loss tangent (tan δ) of 0.02 and relative permittivity (ε r ) of 4.4. The proposed antenna resonates at 2.4, 3.5, and 5.5 GHz, and it covers the bandwidth of 2%, 6.28%, and 2.53%, respectively. The measured results provide an omnidirectional radiation pattern with 58%–78% of efficiency in all operating bands. The eight-port multiband MIMO design provides a high isolation of 17.5 dB, envelope correlation coefficient < 0.04, diversity gain of 9.98 dB, total active reflection coefficient < −10 dB, and channel capacity loss of <0.25 bits/s/Hz. Also, the hand phantom is designed to analyze the reflection coefficients and efficiency of the proposed antenna.

Abstract:In this paper, an eight-element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with dual-band response is designed for fifth-generation (5G) mobile devices. The proposed MIMO systems’ radiators are placed in the inner side frame of the mobile phone board, which has a size of 150 × 7 mm 2 , each spanning an area of 21.5 × 5.5 mm 2 . All eight antenna elements are symmetrical to each other and are fed with a 50 Ω feeding line. The proposed MIMO antenna covers two distinct 5G frequency bands, i.e., 3.5 and 5.3 GHz, and offers −6 dB impedance bandwidth in a frequency range of 3.4–3.65 and 4.8–5.8 GHz. It is worth mentioning that an isolation of more than 18 dB is achieved over the bands of interest without the use of a decoupling network. Similarly, the proposed MIMO antenna achieved an efficiency of more than 60% across the bands, an envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) below 0.04, antenna gain better than 5 dBi, a mean effective gain (MEG) between any two radiating elements found to be better than 3 dB, and a channel capacity (CC) above 38.5 bps/Hz, which is three times better compared to a 2 × 2 MIMO antenna system. Upon fabrication and testing of the proposed antenna, it was noted that the measured results are in good agreement with the simulated data. Furthermore, the MIMO antenna response was simulated in the presence of a human user and shows how the user phantom affects the radiation characteristics of the MIMO antenna. These performance parameters showed promising results, making the proposed design a better option to be deployed in modern-day 5G communication application scenarios, specifically cell phones.

Abstract:A low-profile, single-layered, compact-size, highly-isolated four-port MIMO antenna integrated within a 5 G smartphone has been proposed for a futuristic mm-wave broadband communication system. The proposed MIMO antenna configuration has been derived from a conventional inset-fed rectangular microstrip patch by introducing two parallel I-shaped slots on the patch surface for operating over a wide bandwidth of 4.91 GHz, that is, from 26.78 to 31.69 GHz. The antenna geometry has an overall dimension of 20.9 mm x 20.9 mm x 0.787 mm. The proposed configuration attained a maximum gain of 8.11 dBi and radiation efficiency of 90% at 28 GHz resonating frequency. The integration of the square-shaped SRR structure among closely packed antenna elements has significantly enhanced the overall isolation by 13 dB without compromising the antenna's physical dimensions. The realisation of the S-parameters has also been carried out from the equivalent circuit model to agree with the results obtained from the electromagnetic simulation through CST software. The measured radiation patterns assured the minimal variation with simulated characteristics along the E and H planes. A comprehensive safety investigation of the proposed MIMO antenna has been carried out to assess power densities (<10 W/ m2 ) across different usage modes, including data, reading, and talking in a mobile application perspective. Several diversity parameters, including ECC ( 9.999 dB), CCL (<0.12 bits/sec/Hz), MEG, and TARC, have also been evaluated as performance metrics. Furthermore, the linear transmission property of the proposed MIMO antenna has been validated through the variation of group delay (<0.5 ns) over operating frequency bands in the far-field region.

Abstract:This paper presents a dual-band antenna array with high gain and miniaturized structure which can be applicated to 5G communication systems. The antenna array is composed of two monopole elements. By protruding the ground branches in the metal plane of the antenna array, the isolation between these two elements has been improved greatly and the size has been reduced. The fabricated sample is measured and the results are in perfect accordance with simulation. These results show the designed antenna array with dual operating frequency band from 3.23 GHz to 4.16 GHz and from 4.6 GHz to 5.54 GHz. Its isolation is lower than -15 dB which covers the middle-frequency band of commercial 5G system. Especially, the size of proposed antenna array is 42×34×1.6 mm 3 only. It can be used in handheld wireless devices in the 5G application.

Abstract:In this letter, a compact high-isolated multiple-inputmultiple-output (MIMO) antenna module based on a chip capacitive decoupler is proposed for the fifth-generation (5G) smartphones. The antenna module consists of two feeding ports, radiating metal strips, and a chip capacitive decoupler within a compact size of 16 6 mm2. In this design, two L-shaped metal strips are used as distributed capacitors to compress the size of the module. Meanwhile, a chip capacitive decoupler is added to improve isolation between the two feeding ports, which is realized with an analysis of common and differential modes. In addition, spiral slots are used to adjust the isolation between the modules. A prototype MIMO antenna with four such dual-port antenna modules was tested in the 3.5 GHz band. The measured 6 dB bandwidths of the two ports are 310 MHz (3.423.73 GHz) and 360 MHz (3.333.69 GHz), respectively, and the isolation is 24 dB at 3.5 GHz. The measured efficiencies are 60.5 and 52.7 at 3.5 GHz. The compact MIMO antenna module with high-isolation property provides a hopeful solution for the 5G mobile terminals.

Abstract:Massive multiple input–multiple output (MIMO) antenna is required to meet the high data transmission rate in the current 5G and future 6G mobile communication. This paper presents a novel eight-port dual-band MIMO antenna operated within the 5G new radios N77 and N79 band. The designed MIMO incorporates a self-decoupling method to obtain high isolation of 22.96 and 25 dB at the two resonances 3.48 and 4.92 GHz, respectively. The basic antenna element consists of coupling between a staircase slot and a half-wavelength size loop branch. Additionally, an inverted U-shaped microstrip section is integrated with the radiating unit to serve the purpose of self-decoupling operation. The eight antennas are symmetrically located on the two narrow substrates (of size 5.8 × 150 mm 2 ) as a pair of four arrays. The narrow substrates make the metal rim of the 5.5′′ display mobile smartphone. The designed MIMO is practically realized and experimentally tested to validate the working mechanism. The envelope correlation coefficient and peak channel capacity are obtained as 0.174 and 35.5 bps/Hz in the lower frequency and 0.069 and 39.1 bps/Hz in the higher frequency.

Abstract:In this letter, a multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with wideband performance for 5G smartphones is presented. First, a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) with an inverted-T-shaped open-slot is introduced. The proposed PIFA operates with a wide bandwidth of 78% due to the multimode technology. Then, two such PIFAs are attempted to be merged as a PIFA-pair, constituting a 2 × 2 sub-MIMO antenna with a similar bandwidth as the PIFA-element. Additionally, the isolation between two PIFA-elements in a PIFA-pair is higher than 10 dB across the broadband. Finally, a 4 × 4 MIMO antenna, which is composed of two PIFA-pairs, is demonstrated to cover the 5G NR frequency bands: n77/n78/n79 and LTE band 46. The simulated and measured results are included for illustrating the performance of the proposed MIMO antenna.

Abstract:In this article, a novel self-decoupled multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna pair with a shared radiator is proposed for fifth-generation (5G) smartphones. In our approach, a radiator is directly excited by two feeding ports, and interestingly, the two ports are naturally isolated across a wide bandwidth without using any extra decoupling structures. To offer a deep physical insight of the self-decoupling mechanism, a mode-cancellation method based on the synthesis of common and differential modes is developed for the first time. The proposed self-decoupled antenna pair shows a good isolation of better than 11.5 dB across the 5G N77 band (3.3-4.2 GHz) with a radiation pattern diversity property. Based on the self-decoupled antenna pair, an 8 x 8 MIMO antenna system, constituted by four sets of antenna pairs, is simulated, fabricated, and measured to validate the concept. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed 8 x 8 MIMO system can offer an isolation of better than 10.5 dB between all ports and a high total efficiency of 63.1%-85.1% across 3.3-4.2 GHz. With the advantages of self-decoupling, shared radiator, simple structure, wide bandwidth, and high efficiency, the proposed design scheme exhibits promising potential for the future highly integrated MIMO antennas for 5G smartphones.

Abstract:This manuscript presents high performance dual polarized eight-element multiple input multiple output (MIMO) fifth generation (5G) smartphone antenna. The design consists of four dual-polarized microstrip diamond-ring slot antennas, positioned at corners of printed circuit board (PCB). Cheap Fr-4 dielectric with permittivity 4.3 and thickness of 1.6mm is used as substrate with overall dimension of 150 × 75 × 1.6 mm 3 . In mobile system due to limited space mutual coupling between nearby antenna elements is an issue that distort MIMO antenna performance. Defected ground structure is used to control coupling. The defected ground structure has advantages like ease of fabrication, compact size and high efficiency as compare to other techniques. Less than 30dB coupling is achieved for adjacent elements. The -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 700 MHz is achieved for all radiating elements ranging from 3.3 GHz to 4.1 GHz. The value is about 900MHz for -6dB. The proposed antenna offers good results in terms of fundamental antenna parameters like reflection coefficient, transmission coefficient, maximum gain, total efficiency. The antenna achieved average gain more than 3.8dBi and average radiation efficiency more than 80% for single dual polarized element. The antenna provides sufficient radiation coverage in all sides. The MIMO antenna characteristics like diversity gain (DG), envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), total active reflection coefficient (TARC) and channel capacity are calculated and found according to standards. Furthermore, effect of user on antenna performance in data-mode and talk-mode are studied. Proposed design is fabricated and tested in real time. The measured results shows that proposed design can be used in future smartphones applications. The design is compared with some of the existing work and found to be the best one in many parameters and can be used for commercial use.

Abstract:The design of low-profile Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas for various 5G applications is a topic of huge interest in academia, research, and telecommunication sector. In this aspect, a compact and low-profile 5G MIMO antenna has been designed and analyzed for various 5G applications, specifically for the 24 GHz bands (24.25–24.45 GHz and 25.05–25.25 GHz) and local multipoint distribution system band (27.5–28.35 GHz) of the 5G spectrum. The proposed antenna structure is 20 × 20 × 1 mm 3 in dimension. Two spade-shaped radiators composed of Copper (annealed) material are placed orthogonally to improve isolation and maintain signal diversity. Rogers RT 5880 is used as the material for substrate. The antenna exhibits a wide bandwidth of 21.5–28.5 GHz. The mutual isolation |S 21 | has been maintained ≤29 dB due to the insertion of a T-shaped parasitic strip in between the radiating elements. Novelty in design and superiority in performance has been observed when compared with related antenna categories.

Abstract:A tri-port MIMO antenna designed for Micro/Pico-Cell application is proposed. It is based on printed elements with X-shaped arms, which are oriented to 0°, 120° and 240° in the azimuth plane. The arms of these elements are connected, with which a self-decoupled structure is formed. The mutual coupling between adjacent elements is below -15dB. Meanwhile, it size is compact and bidirectional radiation patterns with around 4dBi Gain and 92° 3dB beam width is achieved, which can provide good pattern diversity and full azimuth coverage in real applications.
