Abstract:This study investigates a novel methodology to intricately craft a HAMMC and thoroughly examine its multifaceted mechanical and tribological characteristics. By combining silicon carbide (SiC) and fly ash as reinforcements, a unique identity is bestowed upon this hybrid composite, enhancing its structural integrity and functional attributes. Stir casting is the chosen methodology for fabricating this composite, favored for its economic viability and suitability for large-scale manufacturing. In this research, the emphasis is on developing a cost-effective composite that not only meets stringent economic considerations but also exhibits improved material properties. Within the realm of hybrid metal matrix composites, the well-regarded Al6061 takes on the role of the matrix material, while the synergistic inclusion of fly ash and SiC serves as reinforcing constituents. Three specimens with compostion 90% Al6061 + 5% SiC +5% Fly ash, 90% Al6061 + 10% SiC +6% Fly ash and 90% Al6061 + 15% SiC +7% Fly ash were fabricated. To unravel the intricacies of the fabricated Al6061 metal matrix composite, comprehensive tests are employed. These tests, including the Pin-on Disc test, Scratch test, Rockwell Hardness test, and Charpy Impact test, collectively work to unveil the nuanced tribological and mechanical behaviors encapsulated within this innovative alloy. The results indicated significant improvement in wear resistance in specimen comprising 78% Al6061 + 15% SiC +7% Fly Ash and volumetric loss found to have 0.96 g. Superior hardness characteristics and enhanced abrasion resistance found in 78% Al6061 + 15% SiC +7% Fly Ash than other two specimens. The highest impact strength exhibited in 90% Al 6,061 + 5% SiC +5% Fly ash specimen.

Abstract:In the realm of advanced materials engineering, the development of hybrid nanocomposites has garnered significant attention due to their superior mechanical properties and potential applications. The primary aim of this research is to develop a surface hybrid nanocomposite using Al1050 aluminium alloy (5 mm thickness) as the base material through friction stir processing. B2O3 nano-powder, averaging 100 nm in size, and Cu micro-powder, averaging 5 μm in size, were incorporated into the aluminium surface in various volume ratios using the Friction Stir Processing (FSP). The processing parameters included a tool rotational speed of 1250 rpm, a feed rate of 50 mm/min, and a tilt angle of 3°. The number of passes was set at two levels: 1 and 3 passes. The influence of the volume ratio of constituents and the number of passes on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the resulting composite was thoroughly explored. The samples underwent tensile tests, microhardness tests, and metallographic examinations using both Optical Microscopy (OM) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM). The composite with 25%-B2O3-75%-Cu composition exhibited the highest stress and hardness values, measuring 141 MPa and 58.14 HV, respectively. The enhanced strength of this sample is attributed to the presence of additives and the resultant grain size.

Abstract:The present investigation focuses on the synthesis of mono (AA5052/SiC and AA5052/graphene) and hybrid (AA5052/SiC/graphene) surface composites using friction stir processing (FSP). This work examines the synergistic effect of SiC and graphene on the fabricated surface composites. Macro/microstructure, microhardness, and wear test analysis were done on these samples, and the results were compared with the base material AA5052-H32. The microstructure analysis showed that the distribution of reinforcement particles in the aluminum matrix is made more uniform by adding hard SiC with graphene nanoparticles, which can reduce the occurrence of particle clustering and agglomeration. As a result, the smallest grain size of 11.2 μm and the highest microhardness obtained was 84.1 HV obtained in hybrid surface composites. Consequently, the hybrid surface composites obtained more improved wear properties than mono surface composites. Thus, the hybrid surface composites achieved the lowest average friction coefficient of 0.304.

Abstract:High specific strength and superior corrosion resistance are two key characteristics of the aerospace grade AA7075-T6 alloy. However, the surface behavior of AA7075-T6 is found to be deprived, because of its behavior of being prone to fretting fatigue and adhesive wear under dry sliding conditions. Thus, surface wear behavior improvement with the retention of the microhardness of the alloy is required for increasing its wider application. For this, surface isomorphous precipitates and the soft matrix need to be protected through dispersion of hard thermally stable ceramic SiC with solid-lubricant graphite particles. The dispersion through friction stir processing (FSP) avoids detrimental phase formations by processing the metal alloy below its melting point temperature. Thus, dispersion of SiC-Graphite inside the AA7075-T6 using FSP is the focal point of the study. The low and high wear rate samples have been analyzed using SEM imaging and elemental analysis through XRD and EDS mapping. In this study, reinforcing the SiC-Gr particles greatly improved the wear behavior of the AA7075 alloy. Wear resistance has been controlled by combining soft solid lubricant Gr particles with load-bearing hard SiC nanoparticles. In dry sliding action, the base alloy matrix was severely exposed to wear, but the hard SiC nanoparticles served as load-bearing asperities and improved the wear resistance. Simultaneously, the graphite layers generated the soft solid lubricating tribofilm further to reduce the wear and friction between mating surfaces. The wear mechanisms have changed prominently from adhesion to abrasion and delamination through reinforcing the SiC-Gr reinforcements. The graphite content in a hybrid ratio with SiC hard particles was found to have improved the wear resistance by 78%. The tendency of fatigue was more effectively improved in surface composites as compared to the base alloy.

Abstract:Abstract Friction stir processing (FSP) is used to produce surface composites with the retainment of bulk properties. In the present study, FSP was utilized to incorporate nano particles of Boron carbide (B4C) and Titanium carbide (TiC) into the matrix of Al5083 alloy individually and in combined form in order to produce mono and hybrid surface composite layer. The FSPed regions were analyzed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) and XRD studies. Mechanical properties of the FSPed surface composites were evaluated through micro hardness and tensile tests. Wear characteristics of the composites were evaluated through pin on disc dry sliding wear test at sliding speed of 1 m/s and under the normal load ranging from 20 to 100 N in steps of 20 N. The mechanical and wear resistance properties of the composite were higher than the base alloy. Among the processed composites, Al–B4C composites have exhibited the highest hardness and tensile strength. However the hybrid composites (Al–B4C–TiC) have exhibited significant increase in wear resistance. Worn out surfaces and wear debris were analyzed through SEM studies.

Abstract:In the present work, hybrid surface composites (HSCs) were fabricated using aluminium 5052 alloy as base matrix and silicon carbide (SiC) and cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) as reinforcement particles via friction stir processing (FSP) technique. Varying reinforcement ratios of SiC and CeO 2 nano-powders, viz 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100 was used. Multi-pass FSP was employed to obtain improved dispersion of reinforcement particles. Results revealed the collaborative impact of SiC and CeO 2 particles on the mechanical properties of the SCs, shedding light on the optimal ratios for achieving superior mechanical performance. The hybrid ratio of (SiC: CeO 2 ) 75:25 was predominant in tensile strength enhancements with an ultimate tensile strength of 283 MPa compared to 269 MPa of BM while the percentage elongation increased to 21.6 as compared to 18.8 in BM. The average microhardness also improved to 92 HV compared to 85 HV. These results emphasised on the importance of HSC fabricated using 75:25 ratio of SiC:CeO 2 reinforcing particles.

Abstract:Aluminium alloys, having high strength, ductility, and toughness, are useful structural materials. Composites of these with ceramic reinforcements improve the hardness and wear resistance, making them suitable for use in the aerospace and automobile industries. Since surface properties play a crucial role for most applications, the manufacturing of surface composites of aluminium alloys is recommended. For this purpose, Friction stir processing (FSP) is being utilized nowadays. It refines the microstructure with a homogeneous dispersion of reinforcements into the matrix and improves physical properties like surface hardness, wear resistance, strength, etc., while retaining the properties of remaining volume. The study aims to investigate and compare the temperature and vibration sensor data while manufacturing Al6061 alloy-based surface hybrid composites by using two different FSP tools. The FSP method is used for the fabrication of Al6061 alloy based composites with the copper and graphite powders mixture (1:1), reinforced into the matrix surface by using two H13 tools with two different pin profiles - threaded cylindrical and plain cylindrical. Holes of different diameters and depths are drilled on the Al6061 matrix for reinforcement addition. This FSP process is investigated using a thermal gun and a Cross-Domain Development kit for temperature and vibration measurement. It is verified that both the temperature and vibration values are lower in the composites fabricated by FSP tool with threaded pin profile than that by FSP tool with plain pin profile. The processed samples are later investigated for the microstructure by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy tests. The reinforcements are dispersed more uniformly by the FSP tool with threaded cylindrical profile. This research can be used to further monitor and control properties like temperature, vibration, force, current, etc., to obtain a uniform reinforcement dispersion with improved mechanical properties during the surface composite preparation by FSP.

Abstract:The motive of this research is to fabricate AA7475/B 4 C/Al 2 O 3 hybrid surface composites (HSCs) using friction stir processing (FSP) for various applications in aerospace, marine, and automotive industries. The research systematically varied key processing variables, including rotational speed (900–1300 rpm), feed rate (30–60 mm/min), and reinforcement ratios (from 30% B 4 C and 70% Al 2 O 3 to 70% B 4 C and 30% Al 2 O 3 ), to optimize responses such as ultimate tensile strength (UTS), tensile elongation (TE), and microhardness (MH). A face-centered central composite design (FCCCD) of response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to develop mathematical models correlating the input parameters with the response variables. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to assess the effects and interactions of the processing parameters on the composite properties. A validation test confirmed the reliability of these optimal conditions. ANOVA results indicated that the tool rotational speeds had the most significant effect on the tensile, ductility, and hardness properties of the HSCs. However, changes in feed rate and reinforcement ratio had minimal impact on these properties. The study identified optimal conditions for different responses: UTS of 452.62 MPa, TE of 6.89%, and MH of 168.52 HV at a rotational speed of 1300 rpm, feed rate of 45 mm/min, and a 50:50% reinforcement ratio (50% B 4 C and 50% Al 2 O 3 ). The HSCs fabricated at 1300 rpm, 45 mm/min, and a 50:50% reinforcement ratio exhibited significant necking before failure, leading to a ductile failure mode.

Abstract:Aluminum-base surface hybrid composites have been fabricated by mixtures of SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 particles on an Al–Si cast aluminum alloy using friction stir processing with the aim of achieving higher wear properties in the Al piston alloy via surface hybrid composites fabrication. The distribution of particles in the stir zone was evaluated via scanning electron microscope. Microstructures of the composites revealed that the reinforcing particles were uniformly distributed in the stir zone. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of each composite were determined using hardness tests indicating that increase in the relative content of SiO 2 resulting in a decrease in the average hardness of the stir zone. Additionally, the wear resistance of the surface hybrid composites was investigated under normal load, sliding speed, and distances of 20 N, 1 m/s, and 4000 m, respectively. It was found that the wear mass loss of the 20% SiO 2 –80% Al 2 O 3 hybrid composites (which was about 4.2 mg) was improved when compared with that of the A356 base alloy (nearly 19 mg). Moreover, by increasing the relative content of SiO 2 particles from 0% to 100% in the hybrid composites, the friction coefficient of the composites rose from 0.55 to 0.73. It can be concluded by adding Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 particles in the Al matrix, wear mass loss can be decreased by about five times compared with that of the base metal, in which the Al 2 O 3 particle increases the hardness and SiO 2 particles acts as lubricating agent, and the combination of these leads to better wear properties. The best combination of the hybrid particles in order to achieve the best wear properties for the hybrid composites is 20% Al 2 O 3 and 80% SiO 2 .

Abstract:AbstractIn this work, the friction stir process (FSP) is used to develop the nano/sub-micron-sized reinforced hybrid aluminum matrix surface composites to enhance the mechanical property of the material. To develop the hybrid surface composites, AA5083 matrix was reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in nano and aluminosilicate (Al2SiO5) sub-microns size material. The FSP experimental trials were performed by varying the process parameters using full factorial design. A machine learning tool (MATLAB R2020a software) analyzes the obtained result and optimizes the process parameter. COMSOL — Multiphysics simulation software was used to simulate the processed model to understand the temperature distribution throughout the plate and surface morphological change mechanism during the FSP by changing the process parameter. This work shows that the tool rotation speed of 1050 rpm and transverse speed 42 (mm/min) with a constant shoulder diameter of 18 mm show the optimum microhardness value of the developed hybrid surface composite plate.

Abstract:The primary objective of this research work is to analyse the effect of double pass on grain refinement during friction stir processing (FSP). The impact of double pass was also assessed on the microstructure, micro-hardness, and tensile strength of the hybrid reinforced aluminum alloy. Field emission scanning microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopic analysis was used to analyze the grain size distribution as well as the percentage of elements present across the stir zone (SZ) and mode of fracture during the tensile testing. Results show a notable increase in mechanical properties and a huge reduction in grain size when compared to base material (BM). The grain size of SZ in single pass FSP (FSPed-SP) and double pass FSP (FSPed-DP) was reduced to 76.71% and 91.8% in comparison to the BM because repetitive stirring action causes huge dynamic recrystallization. However, peak micro-hardness in FSPed-DP and FSPed-SP was achieved as 30.58% and 22.79% of the BM due to the hall–petch effect. FSPed-DP demonstrated superior ultimate tensile strength and percentage of elongation in contrast to FSPed-SP, which exhibited values of 29.03% and 25% respectively. Graphical

Abstract:Friction Stir Processing (FSP), a solid-state processing technique employed to modify the microstructure, is based on the principles of friction stir welding. FSP is one of the most promising techniques for the production of surface composites. In this investigation, AZ31 magnesium alloy is reinforced with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) through a friction stir processing method. Before and after the fabrication of the surface composites the wear tests were conducted by varying the condition of sliding load (25 N & 35 N), sliding distance (1 km & 2 km), and sliding velocity (1 m/s & 2 m/s). Hardness values were measured by using the Brinell hardness tester. Both hardness and wear tests were conducted as per the ASTM standards. After reinforcement, composite material enhances hardness values. The wear rate also reduces as MoS2 acts as a solid lubricant material.

In the present work, egg shell and Tungsten disulphide particles are reinforced in AZ31B alloy using friction stir process. Initially, the ES and WS2 particles are mixed at different weight ratios (25/75, 50/50 and 75/25) then are reinforced in AZ31B plates using a taper threaded FSP tool at rotation speed of 1000 rpm, axial load of 6 kN and traverse speed of 10 mm/min in hole method. The post macroscopic analysis showed that defect free hybrid surface composite is obtained with 75wt %ES and 25wt % WS2 particles reinforced in AZ31B alloy. The grain size is reduced from 15 μm to 5 μm due to the addition of 75wt% ES and 25wt% WS2 particles through FSP. The mechanical, corrosion and tribological responses of AZ31B/75ES/25WS2 hybrid surface composite are observed and are compared with FSPed AZ31B alloy without reinforcements and AZ31B base alloy. The microhardness is improved by 66% and 83% in FSPed AZ31B alloy and AZ31B/75ES/25WS2 hybrid surface composite respectively compared to the AZ31B base alloy. Similarly, the ultimate tensile strength is improved by 16% and 31% in FSPed AZ31B alloy and AZ31B/75ES/25WS2 hybrid surface composite respectively compared to the AZ31B base alloy but the % of elongation is decreased by 70% and 78% in FSPed AZ31B alloy and AZ31B/75ES/25WS2 hybrid surface composite respectively compared to the AZ31B base alloy. The corrosion rates of FSPed AZ31B alloy and AZ31B/75ES/25WS2 hybrid surface composite are decreased by 22% and 48% respectively compared to AZ31B base alloy. The dry sliding friction and wear responses are observed for AZ31B base alloy and AZ31B/75ES/25WS2 hybrid surface composite by varying the applied load (10 N, 20 N and 30 N) and sliding velocity (1.5 m/s, 2.6 m/s and 3.6 m/s) with constant sliding distance of 2000 m. In AZ31B base alloy, the wear mechanism is initially dominated by delamination and ploughing phenomena but at high sliding condition, the delaminated and worn out debris based tribolayer reduced the wear rate. In AZ31B/75ES/25WS2 hybrid surface composite, the wear mechanism is dominated by adhesive and delamination phenomena and the formed tribolayer decreased the wear rate at high sliding condition.

Abstract:Current research work emphasizes on the development of particulate titanium aluminide (TiAl), an intermetallic class of material, through mechanical alloying (MA) from elemental powders and usage of same as reinforcement in AA6061 aluminum matrix to enhance its mechanical and tribological performance. TiAl, being a light weight, strong and abrasion-resistant material, is found to be a suitable candidate to replace dense ceramic-based reinforcements in aluminum composite. Friction stir processing (FSP), a well-established surface severe plastic deformation tool, is used to develop the composite in this study. Several strategies on improving the stirring action and particle distribution during FSP is employed and their scientific effect is studied in detail. Microstructural evolution was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis which revealed uniform particle distribution of reinforcement in the friction stir processed (FSPed) zone with 88.23 % reduction in grain size of composite as compared to base material. Hardness studied showed an increase in the hardness by 33 % for composite material as compared to un-reinforced FSPed material, showing the positive effect of reinforcement alone on the mechanical strength of the material. Tensile results showed an improvement in yield tensile strength from 156 MPa in base to 186.8 MPa in the composite material without significant compromise in the ductility 26.86 % for composite and 28.14 % for base. Mechanisms aiding uniform particle distribution, and the reasons for improvement in mechanical performance of the developed composite is discussed in detail with the help of microstructural studies and post-deformation fractograph.

Abstract:Aluminium 6061 has a widespread applications in the automotive and aerospace sectors. However, because of its poor tribological properties, its life is limited. In this investigation, a surface composite of Ti 3 AlC 2 and Al 6061 alloy was prepared using friction stir processing and its effects have been studied. The examination of microstructure of the fabricated samples were studied using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The microstructural analysis revealed reduction in grain size within both the base metal FSPed and aluminium- Ti 3 AlC 2 composites. The area mapping showed uniform dispersion of Ti 3 AlC 2 particles within the friction stir processed zone. The microstructure refinement lead to increase in the microhardness. The average microhardness of the base metal was 65 HV 0.2 and that of base metal FSPed and Al- Ti 3 AlC 2 were 85 HV 0.2 and 135 HV 0.2 . The grain refinement and uniform distribution of particles were found responsible for the improvement in wear properties. It was observed that the wear resistance improvement of more than 100% in comparison to the parent metal. Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is a surface modification approach by which the surface characteristics of materials can be improved. The materials that are subjected to the FSP can significantly alter the tribological well as the mechanical and metallurgical features by transforming a heterogenous microstructure to a more homogeneous and refined microstructure. In the present work, Zirconia (ZrO2) and Boron Carbide (B4C) nanoparticles along with Graphene Nano platelets (GNP) were reinforced into the surface of the Aluminum AA6061-T6 alloy by FSP. Studies on the effects of the reinforcement on the mechanical and microstructural changes were carried out. As a result of the FSP, the reinforcement particles are uniformly dispersed on the substrate material's surface. The zirconia/graphene reinforced aluminum composite (Al-ZrO2-GNP) has a significant improvement in hardness about 130% when compared to the as-received AA6061 alloy whereas the hardness of B4C/graphene reinforced composite has shown an increase of 87% when compared with the base metal. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope, and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope images reveal the presence of the reinforcement particles and microstructural changes in the friction stir processed aluminum alloys. The Tensile properties of the developed composites have also increased reasonably when compared to the base metal. Wear analysis was carried out and it was found that the B4C/graphene reinforced surface composite has higher wear resistance (40% increase) when compared to the ZrO2/graphene reinforced surface composite (22%increase).

Abstract:The Alumimum alloy AA7050-T7451 is largely used in high strength aircraft applications, Usually in T-7451 temper conditions it possesses optimized strength. Any enhancement in the strength beyond optimized value can achieve great weight saving and energy efficient. Often, relative motion in mutual contact also causes friction and wear. Thus, wear characteristics of such materials is also very important. In the present work the wear characteristic of surface composites made from AA7050-T7451 has been investigated. The wear test were performed on surface composites with best and lowest strength, coefficient of friction and wear surface morphology was analyzed and is discussed in light of microstructural and microhardness profiles. The wear performance, microstructural features and strengthening related and mutually discussed. The overall finding of this work may be of great use to professionals and researchers as the strength, microstructure and wear are all discussed in the single text. The results indicate that poor bonding between the reinforcement-matrix significantly reduces strength and wear behaviors. The effective dispersion of reinforcement results in net enhancement in strength and wear performance both when the processing done within a specific range of processing time-temperature.

Abstract:The development of friction stir welding (FSW) created the basic foundation for friction stir processing (FSP). This process entails refining the local microstructure and achieving the localised plastic deformation due to the stirring effect of the tool, which may involve adding additional filler material as required. The rotating tool involved in the process has a shoulder and pin responsible for heat generation for plastic deformation and localised mixing. The rotating tool is inserted and traversed on the desired surface, tailoring the material properties. The tool's exposure to the surface causes localised plastic deformation and thermal gradient, and microstructural changes occur locally. The present investigation uses Friction Stir Processing (FSP) to fabricate an aluminium metal matrix composite. Recently, the use of aluminium alloy has been replaced by composites because of their increased mechanical and physical properties (specific properties). The experiment leads to manufacturing an aluminium metal matrix composite using aluminium oxide, boron carbide and commercially pure copper dust. Later, the effect of heat treatment on the respective metal matrix composite is studied. A comparative study among three different types of FSP techniques viz. FSP, Reinforced FSP, and Heat-treated Reinforced FSP have been performed. The tool revolution speed (RPM) and tool traverse speed of 400 RPM and 10 mm/min had been implemented, respectively. The T4 Heat-Treatment cycle was used during the current investigation. This investigative study was performed to analyse the changes in grain sizes and hardness values at the stir zone (SZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), heat affected zone (HAZ) and on the base materials (BM) of the samples. The reinforced FSP metal matrix composite (MMC) showed an 81.26% increase in the micro-hardness value (HV) compared to the base metal. Further on analysing the microstructures, the reinforced FSP composite showed a 65.20% reduction in grain size. Moreover, the Heat-Treated sample showed an increase in the micro-hardness value by 99.8%.

Abstract:Surface metal matrix composites offer an excellent solution for applications where surface properties play a crucial role in components' performance and durability, such as greater corrosion resistance, better wear resistance, and high formability. Solid-state processing techniques, such as friction surfacing and friction stir welding/processing, offer several advantages over conventional liquid-phase processing methods. This research investigated the feasibility of producing surface composites of aluminium-based dissimilar alloys reinforced with functional microparticles through experimental validation, determined the process parameters that resulted in a more homogeneous distribution of the particles in the surface composites, and enhanced the understanding of Upward Friction Stir Processing (UFSP) technology. The production of aluminium-based dissimilar alloys (AA 7075-T651 and AA 6082-T651) surface composites reinforced with SiC particles was studied, and it was concluded that the macrography and micrography analyses, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, microhardness measurements, and eddy currents technique reveal an extensive and homogeneous incorporation of SiC particles. In the stirred zone, a decrease of approximately 20 HV 0.5 in hardness was observed compared to the base material. This reduction is attributed to the weakening effect caused by low-temperature annealing during UFSP, which reduces the strengthening effect of the T651 heat treatment. Additionally, the presence of particles did not affect the surface composite hardness in the stirred zone. Furthermore, despite the presence of significant internal defects, SEM analyses revealed evidence of the lower alloy merging with the upper zone, indicating that the lower plate had a role beyond being merely sacrificial. Therefore, the production of bimetallic composites through UFSP may offer advantages over composites produced from a monometallic matrix. The results of the eddy currents testing and microhardness measurements support this finding and are consistent with the SEM/EDS analyses.

Abstract:This study focuses on the effects of a hybrid reinforcement consisting of nanosized particles of Palm Sprout Shell Ash (PSSA) and silicon carbide (SiC) on the mechanical and tribological properties of the Al-Cu-Mg alloy. Hybrid reinforced composites with different weight percentages of SiC and PSSA (0:0, 0:4, 1:3, 2:2, and 4:0 wt.%) were prepared using the ultrasonic-assisted bottom-poured stir casting technique. SEM and EDS were used to characterize the hybrid composite made of Al-Cu-Mg alloy. Optical and SEM microstructural analyses demonstrated an even distribution of SiC and PSSA nano-reinforcements within the matrix. EDS analysis revealed SiC and PSSA reinforcement in the matrix. The mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, and impact strength) and wear properties of the composites and alloy were evaluated according to the ASTM standards. The hybrid reinforced composites displayed remarkable results compared with the base alloy. Among all composites, the 2:2 wt.% SIC and PSSA hybrid reinforced composite exhibited a significant enhancement in both tensile strength and flexural strength, with a 29.15% increase in tensile strength and a 27.64% increase in flexural strength. However, the inclusion of these reinforcements led to a declined in ductility and impact strength of the Al-Cu-Mg alloy composite. Maximum reductions in ductility and impact strength were observed in the 0:4 wt.% SiC and PSSA-reinforced composites, with decreases of 47.67% and 3.56%, respectively. For the 2:2 wt.% SiC and PSSA composites, these reductions were 23.64% and 3.16%, respectively. The SEM analysis of the fractured surfaces of the composites tested for the mechanical properties revealed evidence of both ductile and brittle fracture mechanisms in the tensile, flexural, and impact tests. The wear behaviour of the prepared samples was evaluated, and all composites exhibited superior performance compared with the base alloy, demonstrating adhesive and abrasive wear mechanisms and varying coefficients of friction.
